The weight never ever bothers me. I use my 5D and 5D ii almost daily. I take one wherever I go. I recently purchased a 1DX ii to replace my 1D ii, and I couldn't be happier with any of these cameras. All used of course.

I've only recently realized that the early Canon DSLRs are now perceived as vintage, simplistic slow-you-down gear. Because, when I purchased my first DSLR it was a brand new 20D and I wasn't able to afford the 5D with all its whistles and blows.
Yes, nowadays you say, that you can't see anything on the back screen of a 5D, but back when I started shooting digital on the 20D I created a habit of constantly checking the preview of the picture I just shot. Of course, it wasn't as good as the final result - I mean back then I was working on a Mac and a CRT 21-inch screen that was a solid glass block and weighted a ton to get a feeling of how colors would look when the stuff got printed because LCDs were screens you use on a digital watch in monochrome only 2 years before.
And it was such a relief as opposed to shooting film which took hours or even days until you saw your results.
So, it is funny and refreshing, that DSLRs are now taking the same route Film Kameras did when I was young. And it will not take too long, before mirrorless cameras will get replaced by a new technology that will very suddenly appear and everybody will become nostalgic about the good old days when you were shooting through digital viewfinders 🙃
About your technical issues: parts like complete shutter assemblies and back screens are very cheap to obtain and there are a lot of tutorials of how to fix this camera available.
Regarding CF-Card readers, you don't necessarily need a reader. Just connect the camera through a USB cable. If you are using a Mac, open Image Capture and directly download from the camera. Did this with macos Sequoia and my 5D mkII and 20D yesterday.

''And it will not take too long, before mirrorless cameras will get replaced by a new technology'' that one i think couldnt be further from truth. you have to understand how technological advancement works and how the world around a certain niche works. in fact... photography as a whole is incredibly stagnant for years already. a camera is not a glorified tech demo. its about the final result and creating awesome photos. and matter of fact is: even if you print big, they are almost identical compared to lets say something like a D850 or even older cheaper stuff. its mostly QoL changes really, as most of the features are not needed to take a great photo to begin with.
and here it gets interesting and mobile phones are a great example for this too as its in a similar spot. technological advancement or progression in general is 1. NOT endless and 2. NOT linear. you hit diminishing returns at some point. and we are at that point for a while. take this example: you are... a diver. and you practice every day to increase the time you can hold your breath... you know... if you would do that long enough and get better and better and better and better it would mean at some point you can hold your breath for 16 hours right?
this is not how the world works. you can not improve ENDLESSLY. you will hit a wall at some point where its pretty much impossible to improve more or the curve of progression will be so steep that it will take an insane amount of effort to only get a tiny amount better at something.
its the same with phones. phones are already way too good for everything people do with them. they dont NEED more. and you cant do much more either because you will hit physical limitations. you can not go faster and faster and faster and faster because the reality is: faster and faster means more and more heat that needs to go somewhere and more and more energy drain you need to provide with. in a compact form factor of a mobile phone however there is only so much space to work with to do that. its the same reason desktop PC will allways have more power than laptops have for example because it is physically impossible to do otherwise.
what about TVs? can you hear the new 1024K screen in 20 years? you ll hit limitations of a human eye not even able to see that anymore or how do you expect a 1024K TV screen to make sense if you dont have a screen thats like 50meter wide in scale?
it is the same with cameras too... you can only improve so much. at some point you ll hit lenses and iso performance thats basically night vision so it can see in the dark and it has 8000MP of resolution so that you need an entire nas server to store a single raw file and... you do realize we live in a world where 99% of the people only watch photos on their phones where instagram has a barely 1MP resolution right? improving further would literally MAKE NO SENSE. and improve what exactly? having some harry potter like photos where the people in the photos can walk around? magic? AI taking photos on their own so i dont even need a camera anymore to begin with?
there is almost no improvement left. especially since human beings who will use a camera will hit their limits at some point. when a camera is so much better than everything a human brain can even process or handle... what exactly do you want to improve on that?
and with all of that improvement... how comes... 98% of the people owning a camera like this still take completely sht photos because they lack any sort of creative mindset, eye or vision whatsoever?

I bought a 5d back in the day for the princely sum of £1350 (and that was on a very sweet deal). Was then too shy to use it much, as I was afraid to damage it. Recently rediscovered it, so now it's out of stasis I've got a mint 5d for free (I didn't pay for it, old me did!). It's a big, clunky, chunky beast, but give it enough light (it can be a bit of a shocker in low light situations) and that gorgeous, filmy quality makes it always, always worth it. Also, total banger of a tune at the start! Nice vid chief

I had to shoot a wedding not too long after I migrated from Canon DSLR to a Fuji system, and wasn’t feeling confident enough with the new kit to stake a big gig on it. Rented a 5D IV and a few L primes for the weekend and almost reversed my entire decision - all because it was just so pleasurable to hold and use. It felt like a REAL camera.
No regrets about the Fuji after a few years but it took that amount of time.

    • @Mikri90
      @Mikri90 4 дня назад

Well, the Fujis are wonderful cameras but their ergonomics aren't that conducive to whole day shooting of such events. The reason why Canon stayed at the top of the wedding game so long (and still somewhat does) is because their cameras are, for the most part, convenient workhorse cameras that make such jobs easier. They aren't necessarily better than anything on the market, but they are well-rounded as a whole package. I see a lot of wedding shooters still mainlining DSLRs.

I often find myself going through old photographs and thinking, “Wow, I used to be such a better photographer!” And it’s always, always the photos taken during the time I had the 5D. When I think about it more, I can confidently say that this camera taught many of us what photography truly is. It taught us patience, how to read light, how to chase good light-which, in the end, is the essence of photography. It taught us dedication, and it taught us how to handle failure and not to give up easily! Simply put, because of all its limitations, this camera made you become a good photographer, and in return, it delivered unreal results. Most of us have now moved on to modern toys which, let’s be honest, can do it all. But here we are, spending our time watching videos about the Canon 5D, feeling nostalgic, while our fancy toys collect dust. That says everything there is to say about the 5D...

This camera is what made me my first 5 digits in 2005 money so it will always have a place in my heart. Nothing but fond memories of it, but things have changed so much it's one of those cameras I have on the shelf for sentimental value but refuse to turn on not because of the image quality (which is still good, I still look at photos from it 20 years later) but because the interface was so archaic. It doesn't make the 5d unusable (hell I'm using a film Elan7 that doesn't even have an interface :)), but it just makes it clunky.

It's absolutely mental to be talking about the Canon 5D as "prehistoric". You may not have been around 20 years ago but in the grand scheme of things it's still a relatively modern camera. 20 years ago I was going around with a 3.3 MP Nikon 990 and everyone thought the photos that came out of it were amazing. Then I got a D200 (a contemporary of the 5D) and the photos were night and day better. But the thing is that quality imaging isn't necessarily about image quality, and the 5D surpasses most amateur's needs and could easily still be used professionally today. It was a stunning camera then and it still is now. Just because sensors have more pixels and autofocus has more points today doesn't make the photos that come out of the cameras any better. Someone who knows what they're doing with a 5D could still outshoot someone will all the gear and no idea to this day.

Mine fell off 3 times. The first time I brought it in for repair. It was supposedly "reinforced" but about a year later it fell off. Maybe predictably so because the glue Canon was using was reported to be very sensitive to humidity, and I was down in a sort of a gorge by a river in high humidity. Since the only service repair shop in the country capable of handling that was in a different city to my own, and it happened late in the evening (luckily I just shot a few test shots in my room so it fell off while at home), and I needed it on the next day, I went to a 24/7 store and bought a tube of super-glue and just glued it. It held on for a while, then fell off again, but this time I had time to find a more suitable type of glue, because as some people have suggested to me, if you get a glue that turns stiff when dried, it doesn't absorb the mirror shock well. But if you get one that stays sort of "rubbery" when it dries it will act as a shock-absorber. Worked well enough and didn't fall off again.

The mirror fix is super simple, just four tiny drops of superglue and press on it for 30 seconds allow to dry 24 hours and all done. I fixed mine several years ago, when after 13? years it fell off. I had no problem with focus afterwards, in fact, the viewfinder looked shaper. You don't drench the glue all over in some thick globs, just a tiny drop in each corner. As for the sensor, it is first generation and does catch dust but can be easily cleaned, you need a sensor cleaning kit for that a good light and magnification, I've done that too, with good results. As for your rear screen malfunction, that is down to your particular unit. Probably someone dropped it and something is a bit lose, may be cheaper to buy a replacement camera, or send it off.
The back screen is fairly useless due to low resolution, but good to check the framing and histogram, poor for judging focus. Use only the center focusing point, focus and recompose as needed, which was a normal and common technique for every camera for years.
You can buy brand new CF cards if you are worried about it; also, larger CF cards require a firmware update to I think, the second, or last version. I think there was only one firmware update. If you don't have that update, then you may have issues with more modern, recent card sizes. I was able to hunt down a copy of the last firmware on the internet and it installed fine and I have had no problems with larger cards.
I have found my 5D, which I bought new, completely reliable, excepting for the mirror which fell off after some many years, maybe 12 or 13 years. The fix was not hard, and, as I said, no focusing or viewfinder issues at all, maybe even an improvement.
So, were I you, I would look for a working copy and take it from there.
The images are unique as is the experience, worth any hassle because you can't get anything quite like the look of those images, and it is a fun thing. Lots of EF glass out there and other 5D models as well.

Similarly, my favorite synthesizer of all time, the Ensoniq TS-12 (made in Malvern, Pennsylvania, of all places) lasted me from the early '90s all the way up to the summer of 2020. When it finally gave up the digital ghost, it was like losing a member of the family. 😢

It's absolutely hilarious that I use THE EXACT SAME SET UP, 5D classic and a 90's 35mm f2.0.
Yet the photos I take look absolutely and completely different to anything you showed.
    Some stuff I can say:
The highest ISO is 3200. It's the H, it's a FULL STOPE extra of grain (but it's literally usable, I've used the 5D for night/social club photography and it's absolutely usable)
My viewfinder also looks out of focus when stuff is actually in focus, but I think it might have to do with the dioptrics that I never knew how to like... Set up.
Talking about how filmic the camera is... I don't have a PC, do I do all my postprocessing on my phone, for which I rely heavily on using the micro SD card slot. So... To keep my workflow, and because CF cards are expensive AF, I bought a CF to SD adapter which I use with a SD to micro SD adapter (it never fails making people cringe. Ik, I'm literally Frankenstein and her monster). When I tried the set up I found that the camera won't read SD cards higher than 1GB. 1GB is about two rolls of film.
When I'm shooting I treat my SD cards as rolls of films. I also kinda carry anywhere between 2 to 13 SD cards on me (finding so many SD cards was a challenge).
I recommend this camera SO much!

Struggled to like the images of digital cameras after years with film, and wasted a fortune flitting from Sony (A6000, A7R2, A7R3), Fuji (XE2 & 3, XT2, XHi, XCF and XT5 - sent back as the viewfinder gave me epilepsy!), Nikon (D200, D90), Leica (M8, TL2, CE) and Canon (5DSr, 6D, 5Dii and now 5D).
By FAR the best colour palette (reducing so much messing with hue per channel etc. in PP) are the 5Di and ii and 6D).

Sorry to hear that about your 5D. You probably purchased a well used model, or one that was sitting on the shelf too long. Yes, some cameras deteriorate when sitting too long. I paid $2200 band-new for mine back in 2006 which to me was a lot of money for a camera, it still is BTW !! At the time I was using my trusty 30D which I had purchased a few years earlier and had become accustomed to it. As far as my experience with the 5D, it was not overwhelming. First of all, I was a little resentful that after paying all that money, the camera was practically feature-less. It reminded me of an old Kodak Brownie which was just a box with a lens in the front.
Unlike the clakity-clack shutter sound of my 30D, the 5D made a deep clunk sound. it's as if the camera was struggling to move the mirror up and down. The shutter was not as responsive as the Nikon D200 which was also out around that time. Picture wise I did make some great pictures with this camera, but often what I saw on the back LCD did not match with what I saw in reality. Thank goodness things straightened out when I downloaded to my computer, or made a print.
I remember that I was a little hesitant taking this camera out because of the cost, so in most situations I felt more comfortable carrying my 30D. i did buy some lenses for it. Such as the Holy Trinity 16-35mm f2.8 vs1, 24-70mm f2.8 and the 70-200mm f2.8. Unfortunately, times got hard and I had to sell both the 5D and my 70-200 f2.8. A few years later I recovered and purchased the 70-200mm f4 which is much smaller less intrusive and CHEAPER and the Canon 6D. To tell you the truth I miss my 70-200mm f2.8 sometimes, but I really don't miss the 5D. The 6D takes better picture has more features and the shutter sounds way better in my humble opinion(IMHO). Would I get another 5D ? NOPE !! The newer, more modern DSLR's are so much better. Although I did take some fabulous photos with my 5D, I also took a lot of bloopers that were no better than the images from my 30D. Thinking back, a lot had to do with which lens I was using and other factors. The camera performed great with the 'L' series lenses, but not so great with non-L regular Canon lenses if I remember correctly ?

A hack for the back screen, which somehow most people never realized (I had to show it to a few owners), is to inscrease the sharpness under the Picture Style settings to the max.
It's a shitty screen either way, but for some reason the camera defaults to the lowest value, which means you're looking at a blurry mess. Even that shitty screen can be alright for evaluating sharpness when you have that turned all the way up. There are also no negative side-effects since this won't affect RAW files.

@ oh yeah, one last thing - the screen colors were mismatched between different units. I had them viewed side by side with other units that my friends owned and some were cooler, some warmer, some had a magenta cast, some had a green cast. Nothing you can do about that, the screen was just terribly calibrated out of the box.

  • @dangilmore9724
    @dangilmore9724 Месяц назад

The color tint on the bach display being off is usually because of the picture style setting in the camera. The preview image is a jpeg rendering of the raw file with the picture style applied in camera. Set the style to Standard and set color temperature to auto. The occasional posterized color on the back display is generally a corroded electrical connection.
I've run a couple 5D classics into the ground in excess of one million shutter cycles.
The 5D still is a viable camera today, even at 12.5mp. Remember, pros were shooting outstanding photos 29 years ago and 12.5 is perfectly sufficient for current editorial shots and prints.
