Apart from all the spiel from his summation he doesn’t mention the disparity between the build quality of this icon and the terrible plastic designs that Canon employs even in their mid range designs.
Interesting commentary. My new camera is now 18 years old! 😮 When I bought my 5D in ‘06, it was a quantum leap forward for me. Only issue I ever had was the mirror falling off (sound familiar?). Didn’t much like that but the factory fixed it and it’s been fine ever since. Now long retired, I don’t use it a lot (that iPhone is just so handy) but lately have been shooting it in monochrome mode. It renders black and white tones beautifully. At 85, I’ll not likely replace it, though the newer gear is very tempting. And yes, that Nifty Fifty is a great lens on this camera 😁
I bought a 5D Classic about 3 years ago as my first full frame camera, didn't use it much and bought the R6 shortly after. This is the best video that I've watched on that camera. Makes me want to go out and start shooting with it again. And I agree.. .the shutter click, when you snap a photo, sounds awesome. Great video!
Aside from the fact that I've got a soft spot for the 5D Classic, I really liked this video. I like you're down to earth persona. You seem very genuine. Definitely digging the vibe.
We had the 5Dii, then got the 5Diii when it was released, and never upgraded again on DSLRs…absolute workhorse for video and stills. Robust and quick. We moved to other video cinema cams, but still make many stills with it. A good used one now is a very smart buy.
I had the 20D, and after the 20D died, went for mirrorless. Mirrorless is amazing, but it lacks in one area: output is not natural. So, went back to the full frame 20D (which is the 5D classic), I absolutely love it. The only areas I felt I want a little more was low light, the ability to micro adjust the lens to focus accurately, and sensor dust cleaning which the 5Di does not have, and I suffer a lot from dust on sensor, so absolutely no lens changes in the field. (Here, Hawaii is EXTREMELY dusty....) While the 5Di has absolutely amazing output, I was extremely frustrated that the focus is just a touch soft on every shot because the focal plane is just a teensy bit off.... Recently got the 5D iii with the battery grip, which gives everything that I missed - the extra low light range I was looking for, and the ability to micro adjust the focus of the lenses. The mark iii is absolutely amazing, what a workhorse! I am keeping both 5Di and 5Diii as main cameras, planning to bring both to photo shoots. One with a 85mm and the other with 35mm. Very different rendering from the two cameras, and as they say, diversity brings joy and beauty.
They are very similar to the Portra film especially the Portra 400. I still shoot both film and digital. Yes they are different but very close. My 5D was purchased brand new and I was hooked on Canon before that purchase. I started with a Pentax ME Super as my first SLR back in the 70’s. I own Sony, Fujifilm, mirrorless, Rollieflex cameras , Canon film , Nikon film and Five Polaroids there is nothing that compares to my color science out of the Canon 5D. Thanks for your great review.
Canon 5D Classic was the most talked about camera in 2023. Logically so. Take a direct out of the camera jpeg image and place it against an R5, Z9 or A1 image. Common viewers are likely to rate the Classic image above all.
@@ScottAlanPhotography7I bought a 5D MKII last year specifically for the images it creates. Simply amazing color science. I'm going to watch your video!
You must be joking. Maybe the so called common viewers have an eye impairment. The A1 and/or the Z9 will annihilate the obsolete 5D, and they should because they are vastly superior. Hype the canon 5D all you want, it`s just an old camera, nothing special anymore.
@brugj03 I don't think anyone is trying to have a competition here. But that being said, there's someone out there making better images with an older camera.
Loved the video, thank you. The 5D classic, I acquired in 2023 also, was the third in the 5D series for me following on from the 5D II and 5D III. Absolutely love it and love what it represents as the formal beginning to the Canon digital full frame camera aimed at the hobbyist and professionals at the same time. I am glad it doesn't have the video function and fits better as a direct transition from analogue to digital. Can't believe the release will be 20 years old next year. As a side note, I also re-acquired the Canon 350D (same release year) for the collection and represents the first ever digital camera I owned.
I didn't find the 50mm stm all that fascinating and doesn't do the 5d justice. Even the 40mm 2.8 is better.. I found the Sigma 50mm 1.4, does help the 5Dc shine.
Great Video thanks for sharing. I am going full circle. Started out with a 6D and then moved to all Fuji Gear and now I think I'm going to try out the 5D classic.
I was looking for a cheap Canon 5D Classic because it's always been my dream camera since I bought my brand-new 20D. I ended up buying the 5D II as I found one even cheaper than all 5D Classics on offer.
Just mentioned in another video how much I loved my 5D... then after my mirror dropped out mid-wedding, I never fully trusted it again. However, its truly a great feeling working with this camera Its a bit like back in the analogue days, to get results we must read the light carefully + waiting for all to fall into place, and this is NOT a bad thing. We become "better" photographers, since we must think before shooting. Today we have 20 frames a second + dynamic range from black night to the Sahara sun ... and a resolution to astronomical proportions... so less thinking is needed before we act, and we become lazy.
Awesome! It just goes to show that there's no such thing as an obsolete camera if it does what you need it to do. I've moved to mirrorless, selling my 1DX Mk III, 7D Mk II, and 20D and EF/EF-S lenses, but I held on to my very first digital, the 300D I bought back in 2003 with the 18-55 kit lens. It's just too much of an old friend to get rid of (that and the fact that I might get $5 for it in a trade-in 🙄). When I go out to do bird/nature/wildlife/landscape shooting, I'll use my R5, R5 Mk II and R6 Mk II, but for random walkaround shooting, I actually prefer the 300D. It's a nice compact size, and even 21 years on, it's a versatile shooter that provides good results.

I just got 1 too, as an amateur, this camera is limited to its iso, but completely adequate for most of time. Indoor shooting will be limited if you plan to use slow lenses with F4 and above. He is right 50mm nifty fifty would be great for this camera or get any zoom lenses with F2.8, it wont be cheap because this camera only take EF lenses. I end up getting Tamron 28-75 f2.8 the cheapest zoom lenses I can find that has f2.8 and not as bulky. I’m happy with these setup, great for family, travel, street photography, but don’t expect pro level result.
Got 2 pcs. Despite it's CMOS the picture is very pleasing, not sterile. the on-off switch is prone to be turned on /off accidentally while wearing, as well as the dial if it's not locked and has a function assigned; mk3 has it in more secure place.
I purchased the 5D classic back in 2005 for about $1900. I eagerly waited, even lost sleep while my 5D was in the mail. When It finally arrived, I was not really impressed. Actually I was a litle dissapointed. The camera was feature-less. Just a box with a Full Frame sensor in it. It took great pictures at times and also allowed me to crop my pictures much tighter in PP. At other times the pictures were not any better than on my cropped sensor camera the Canon 30D. Actually, I prefered taking my 30D out, not only because it was faster, smaller and quieter, but because it was CHEAPER. I just didn't feel comfortable taking a $1900 camera out all the time, especially in the rain. The 5D made a funny "clunky" sound when you pressed the shutter and was really slow at only 3.3 frames per second. Meanwhile my 30D shot a 6 frames per second. I sold my 5D due to hard times and it wouldn't be until the 6D came out that I would shoot with a Full Frame camera again. Do i have any regrets ? NOPE . My 6D is a much smaller camera and takes the same great FF pictures, if not better, plus it's a lot quieter. This is not surprising since the 6D has 20 Mega pixels instead of 13 of the 5D. I do miss that 'eery' sort of film like look I use to get with the 5D sometimes, but I found that I can emulate that look with my 50D cropped camera .
One thing I have to disagree with you on is: “your best camera is the one on you.” For me, the best camera is the camera that I enjoy shooting with. Canon 5D is definitely that camera. 😄
I got a 5D, pretty newish, also got a 24- 105 L , Color is just so good. I'm a throwback, I shot with G1 with Film. This camera is big but takes fine pics for an amateur:)
The best photos come from your mind and your imagination. Basic cameras have always worked for me because they are just a box with a metered hole. Do love the canon colors 😉
I'm really tempted to use my 5D classic for upcoming weddings. I would like to take photos with a different style than I would have when shooting with my A7iii, not paying attention to the technology, the burst of shots, the super precise autofocus and other things. Yes, it might be crazy to shoot with the 5D instead of the A7iii, but the feeling I have shooting with the Classic is beyond. Even the look is really different in the photos. Knowing that to shoot weddings with the Classic I would have to get another one as a backup, in your opinion is it recommended to shoot with the 5Dc nowadays for weddings?
I thought JPEGs were not meant to ever be edited. But don't worry, I also used to shoot JPEGs on my 20D back in 2006 and edit them gently, but quickly turned to RAW, not because of the lack of tonal resolution an 8 bit JPEG offers, but because of DETAIL. Those old DIGIC processors just were not as powerful to extract quality fine details for JPEG shooting.
Great video Mark, I enjoyed it and agree with most that you say . . . . . . shutter loud but if you like it you will love the EOS 3, that bad boy comes with ear plugs . . . . 😄
I have two Canon 5D cameras that I love. I also have a Canon 1DS Mark II which has much more megapixels than the 5D. That being said, I much prefer the 5D classic. I have two Canon 5D Mark 2s which I also love to use, I am very happy with the 12 megapixels, event though the 5D Mark 2 has over 20 megapixels.
The AF is actually phenomenal. It's just 9 focus points. When you keep that in mind it's awesome and not CCD. 1D classic is the only canon ccd. And it seems to be a unicorn.
The 5D was a great camera. Many of the greatest digital images in history were taken on a 5D. Great cameras don't stop being great cameras. That's all I wanted to say.
Good video. I've got 12 years with mine (I now own three). In order to spice things up some, I recently added a Sigma Art 50mm f1.4 DG to my Canon 5D arsenal. Good and sharp--better than the nifty 50 from Canon, though I love that lens too. Next I have a Canon 40mm f2.8 pancake on order. It is white and should add a unique contrast to the front of the 5D Classic.
They’re not easy to find. Is a mk3 as good as the mk1 or is it too modern? I want to learn from scratch and I want that dreamy color profile the mk1 has…
If you want to slow down even more in photography, shoot with film 🎞️ like the good old days. Speed isn't necessarily good. You can't rush it to paint a piece of artwork or compose a piece of music (classical). It has never been and will never be. 🥂🍾

To be honest ..... I still use the 5 d for my shots ...... I like the old stuff .... And guess why ..... It needs skill . Like the skills that old photographers had .... By the way, I just went back to shooting films and quit shooting digitally. There’s something about it that film cameras can give, but digital cameras can’t.

It is the trend of our time to leave the requirements for the implementation of quality to technology. For this reason, the state of modern digital photography results in technically flawless but meaningless photographs from artificial intelligence.

You spent all this time researching, setting up the shot, editing, scripting, etc. But yet you hold the mic as if you didn't have enough time to boom or clip the mic. Would have taken 2 min. I don't understand this YT trend... Great shots. Good video. Just kills me to see this mic in hand thing... let Danny Gervitz have his mic in hand moment.
It’s no surprise that new gear freaks are always samba-dancing with their equipment albeit, without proper idea whether they need it! Only photographers know what they are doing and thus, they are never bothered by the noisy promotions - they have no time to as they are busy creating images with whatever they possess. Few gear freaks are also devoid of the knowledge that, common image viewers are concerned about the images only no matter what equipment was used. They never ask this stupid question. It’s all that counts to real photographers.
I am pretty sure that most Canon shooters agree with me that each new generation of 5D was a great improvement. Idiotic to go back in time chasing ghosts when you can spoil your shots in P+P as you like.
EVF, electronic viewfinder cheats and should be banned like what Leica did in their digital cameras. To fully understand "expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights", one should go shoot film, then process it and print photographs in the darkroom. It takes years of practice with a grand piano 🎹 to become a world-class concert pianist; it takes minutes to learn to play electronic keyboard with one finger or two on RUclips for family fun. ❤

Enjoyed that Mark, thanks for sharing!
is that a real polaroid land camera in the background? looks like the cameral my dad owned in the late '50's
It was the grandfather of all EOS SLR and DSLR cameras body style design. 🎉
If you like the 5D classic, you might also like the Leica M9.
I just made a video on it too. Pretty crazy what you can buy for chips!
buying soon love for film look photos plus edit combine with a canon color science ugh.. looks like fuji film..😄 excited to test.. . i have a RP but i want to some different camera nostalgia feels. .. i think old camera canon with 50mm 1.4 usm it will be fun and memorable .
To be honest ..... I still use the 5 d for my shots ...... I like the old stuff .... And guess why ..... It needs skill . Like the skills that old photographers had .... With the newer generation of cameras and all this hype .....newer photographers seem "lazy" to me ..... I do also own 5d markiv 6d markii r5 and all the stuff . But that mirror and the sound when it slaps whenever you press the button it's just so satisfying.
What about the mirror falling off
For exposure, rely on histogram. Always.
Dude that camera has a CMOS sensor. If it had a CCD sensor, I would have purchased 1 years ago. I purchased a mint EOS 1D classic for the CCD sensor
By the way, I just went back to shooting films and quit shooting digitally. There’s something about it that film cameras can give, but digital cameras can’t.
The Nikon Z8 is the best ever I think. I've never touched one but the youtubers say I need one or else I suck.
You want this camera to look like film . Shoot at 1/60sec . Aperture 2.8 . At iso800 + . The light will need to be low / think magic hours . But results are Special
hey! just found your channel through your video January Film Stocks: Kodak Gold, Phoenix 200 and More. why did you turn off the comments? I wanted to leave some nice encouraging words for you.
Shoot! Again? I have no idea why it did that. One sec!
Just fixed it!
It's not a CCD sensor. The 5D has a CMOS sensor
Its CMOS not CCD, maan!
I’ve a Canon T90. meow 🤭
👍🏼
Stop complain about 5D classic regarding No video. Its a pure Photography camera. If you really want video get 5Dmk2 which has same Sensor and autofocus system but higher megapixel. 5DMK2 WAS the LAST AFTER that 5dmk3 and mk4 have different sensor. If you hack it you can get 4k record footage. Btw all four 5D cameras they has Excellent Quality Build Magnesium Alloy Better than these Shitties Cheapo mirrorless R6 and R5 Polycarbone plastic nowadays which suck...
punt.
Gear collectors follow the endless process of collecting gears while, photographers go on creating images. Doing both is physically impossible.
It is the trend of our time to leave the requirements for the implementation of quality to technology.
For this reason, the state of modern digital photography results in technically flawless but meaningless photographs from artificial intelligence.
💯
legend goes he's still holding the mic... Joking. Kind of. Why not just clip the mic? You spent all this time researching, setting up the shot, editing, scripting, etc. But yet you hold the mic as if you didn't have enough time to boom or clip the mic. Would have taken 2 min. I don't understand this YT trend... Great shots. Good video. Just kills me to see this mic in hand thing... let Danny Gervitz have his mic in hand moment.
How many times do you have to tell us your totally mirrorless now ...Yeah we get it mate ...
I think this is still an awesome camera, so much I also did a review just a bit later then you :-) ruclips.net/video/67CS3cUXQiE/видео.html
blah blah
what a useless comment
@@NGameReviews Hes obviously a Nikon fanboy 😃
@@michaelbell75 hey that's not fair to us Nikon shooters! We prefer to actually take photos instead of talking crap on the internet 😂
