    I didn't really like the EOS R when I first started using it. But I tried it out again recently and absolutely over the moon about it.
    Great video!

      Thanks! I love your channel, and have really been enjoying the XA50 comparison videos.
      We use several for live streaming at work, and I do wonder why they aren’t more popular in the RUclips world.

      I hate those who use cuts like that. Not professional at all. That means you're not putting in the working to do so.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 года назад

      It’s tricky, and sometimes people can definitely go overboard with it. It took me a long time to be comfortable with a few cuts here and there on RUclips, but jump cuts are such a norm for the platform that I don’t mind them (within reason).

    You're, right! People did give a bad review on this camera, but, I looked at the specs and made my own decision to buy it, anyway. I didn't care that it didn't have 4k and a head phone jack for audio. It works, well, for me:)

    Great overview. I think your opening comment of "there isn't such a thing as a bad camera these days" is bang on. I've been thinking of buying this cam for a while now and have watched heaps of reviews with a lot of the reviewers bitching about 4K crop, nano differences in bitrate etc etc. In my opinion it's all hot air. A lot of the results of what you get out of a camera is down to the person behind it not what it does or doesn't have. A new camera on the market is "the best thing since sliced bread" to a lot of reviewers... until the next best thing comes along, ad infinitum. Thanks for this review and not dwelling on the nano negatives on this particular model. I may just make the purchase now.

    New subscriber, EOS R owner, replaced my 5D mk2. Really enjoyed your review, especially after watching way too many others over time. Bought mine when it came out. Touch bar: right touch - histogram, left touch - level, the swipe: after too many unwanted changes I shut it off recently, will replace it in time w/ something, but I enjoy the touch bar availability. I do love this camera. I did get the kit 24-105, and I really highly recommend it, the RF lenses are stunning, and the 24-105, for me, is my always on lens, and it's just beautiful. O, I'm a photographer, never so far a videographer though I can't think of a simpler set up - the 5D seemed more complicated, might just turn that corner some day soon.

    I love the flip screen on my 6Dmii. I’m 6’ tall and when the need of a group picture, I just flip the screen, hold the camera high in the air as far and high posible while looking at the screen in live view, take click the shutter and Voila, the magic comes when I see the group picture images taken at 45degrees angle.
    The quality and the camera handle, along with the flip screen is a game changer.

    One thing that I love about my EOS R that some hate is using the touch screen to change focus points. For me it's more tactile than a joystick would be. I switched from an entry level DLSR (D3300) so it's a huge change either way, but that option is my favorite.

    I just got it as my b cam to my R6 and I absolutely love it. Such a great and fun camera to use. The video specs might be rather unimpressive, but the pictures are super detailed and the camera is so, so easy to use. This is something where Canon excells!

    • @tombuck

    One way to "get around" the 4K crop would be to use EF-S lens since they are made for APS-C sensors.

    • @ReformationsGlassArt
      @ReformationsGlassArt 4 года назад

      what are the good and bad points of doing it this way ?

    • @anthony2507
      @anthony2507 4 года назад +1

      @@ReformationsGlassArt No real negatives. Because the 4K crops 1.6, if you use an EF-S lens it "gets rid of the crop" a normal EF would have. Because APS-C sensors have a 1.6 crop compared to full frame.
      For example if you used the EF 50mm using 4K it would be similar to using a 70mm~, if you used an EF-S 50mm it would remain 50mm using the 4K on the EOS R.
      This only applies to 4K, you would have major vinette using a EF-S outside 4K function.

      '"This only applies to 4K, you would have major vinette using a EF-S outside 4K function" is it possible to use 35mm crop setting in the camera for other settings using APS-C lenses? If so there would be no vignette.

    Hi Tom, I’m back again 🤣
    The EOS R is in a weird market situation here in my region. The Canon official have been doing nothing, but offload its own shopping links from its platform, and the dealers who have the goods increased the selling price, even no gaps between EOS R6...
    What could I do? Buy R6 instead of R?
    Afraid of overheating issues on R6

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад

      If prices are the same, I think the R6 might be the way to go. You'll have the same great 1080 recording that never overheats, and from what I understand, the regular 4K on the R6 doesn't have issues. It also seems as though the new cameras have gotten better with firmware updates, and there are supposed to be some pretty big updates coming in early 2021.

      The firmware is a wishful thinking, not the reality. And there’re some reviews on R6, mentioned the image sharpness is not the same as R when filming, even in regular 4K. Makes me wondering perhaps it’s caused by the lower resolution?
      Hard to imagine R6 is a model for R’s upgrade, as the M1 MacBook Pro situation, only two ports but called itself Pro🤣🤣

    I like the touch bar too. I also have mine set to iso - it's amazing! Especially using the adapters. The left touch set to auto iso doesn't always want to work for me though. But the right iso 100 does, so I'm okay. I think I'm using it wrong. I've had lots of Canon cameras and still do have them. But this is my favorite camera by far. I'm torn between the two. On eBay, used 6D II's are going for $1,200 while the EOS R is going for $1,800. Do you think the EOS R is worth the extra $600 for making RUclips videos? My concern with the 6D II is that all of the 1080p sample footage I've seen looks unacceptably soft for a camera of that price.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  5 лет назад +1

      For me personally, the R is worth the extra price. BUT, the 6D really is incredible. Pretty much all of my videos from the end of 2017 through the past month have been filmed with it, so you can judge the image quality for yourself and see if it suits your needs.
      I would recommend checking out Canon Price Watch for deals. They change all the time, but you can often find brand new versions of each camera for those prices from legitimate stores.

    Hi, I have a theory about the EOS R and why Canon seemed to miss the mark slightly with it - [cropped 4k, single SD card slot, only 30 & 60 fps in 4k & 1080p, M-fn bar... etc]. I believe the EOS R, was built as a test bed for Canon's RF lenses, to ensure they worked and produced the quality of image they wanted; which the reviews of the RF lenses support.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 года назад

      That could be the case. Canon is clearly going all in on RF lenses now, so the experiment must have paid off!

    • @Demeetrius

      I'll have to disagree. I think Canon could have put amazing specs in the Eos R but decided to limit them like they have done with almost every camera in order to protect the higher cost they'll put on the next camera. Canon has the technology to put 99 percent of all their amazing features in a single camera but refuses to do so because they're more concerned with 💸

    I've been considering getting a Sony A7R IV, but I've always used Canon and something is drawing me to the EOS R. It has its flaws, but they really don't seem significant to me. I'm currently still using my 10 year old Canon 7D and am still perfectly happy with it, but really any modern full frame camera is going to be a MONSTER step up. My 7D still gets amazing results and I will always keep it and always use it, but just need to get a more modern full-time camera. Yeh... I think I'll probably end up with the EOS R and spend the extra money on a 16-35 or a 70-200 on top of it. Not buying until mid next year so we'll see what comes out or is announced then, but definitely leaning EOS R now.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 года назад +1

      The thing that’s toughest to convey with the R is how enjoyable it is to use. It’s definitely not a perfect camera by any means, but now that I’ve had mine for a good 5 or 6 months I still get genuine joy every time I pick it up to use it.
      And the more I use it, the more I’m impressed with the results I get. There can be such a difference between tech specs on paper and real world experience.

      @@tombuck Having a camera that is enjoyable to use is easily more important to me than its raw specs. It is true that there are no bad cameras these days, there are those with decent spec and those that should have decent spec. Unfortunately canon is the later !
    Comparing the 6Dii to eos R is little bias as the eos RP is the mirrorless version of 6Dii and eos R is really a hybrid 5Div.
    I agree having the same batteries throughout the range is a big bonus.
    Being a canon DSLR eos 7Dii owner who upgraded from 7D. I invested in large number of decent compact flash cards. The uDii can use both CF and SD I have good choice of cards. If I purchased eos R or RP they are only SD which makes my collection of CF cards redundant.

I’m more inclined for the 6D MkII because of everything you mention, and the only reason I see of purchasing the R is for its AF capabilities (taking into account the fact that I won’t be using it for video). But seeing that there is a $500 difference in price between the two, I might just stick with the 6D II, as I have plenty of existing glass and wouldnt plan on buying RF lenses any time soon.
