When I used Sony for a whole year, I never felt at home with the system and it had a few too many quirks that cost me a few gigs. Sold off all my Sony gear, bought an EOS R and have zero regrets. Absolutely love the image, the autofocus and the lenses

I've had the EOS R since May, 2019, and I love it! I bought the 28-70mm f2 RF lens today and it's such a good setup. The RF lenses are simply, amazing!

He's been through this a long time ago haha. TLDR: Canon > Sony because it makes him feel better. And I'm no Sony fanboy. I agree, the EOS R is just fine and if Matti thinks he makes better videos with it, then who am I to disagree.
I did the same switch, only I don’t shoot video. Even for stills I MUCH prefer the R over the 1dx2. The AF is so precise and the spread of points, the number of points, the eye//face tracking etc. Just works.

We use the tools we need. My fav camera of 2019 has been the Sony a7riv. I'm a straight photographer so the insane big images have been fantastic to work with.

@@biankadanielle Oh my goodness it is amazing. I have done several portrait sessions since I got it and it is the first time that all images came out sharp. Not one blurry image. The focus is so fast and the eye tracking is spot on. I did some head shots last week for a company and once uploaded I zoomed in on the eyes 400% and it was so so sharp.
WOWwwwwww. Have a Canon 6D Mark ii with a prime 24mm 1.4 mark ii and have always just shot in manual. When I wanted to shoot in 60fps for slow motion I went through the task of changing everything. I can not believe I never set up my C1 and C2 settings on my camera. DOiiiiiii! Thank you Matti for the help on this one, you da man. Im all set up now for 24 and 60fps settings.
When I moved into my van, I had to get rid of a lot of stuff. The more I got rid of, the more joy I had in my life. If you didn't use something in a year, it's time to get rid of it. You'll never regret it. You have enough cameras. If you haven't used something in the last 6 months, it might be a good idea to get rid of that too. 🙂🙂🙂
Changing my A7iii to EOSR was the best decision I could make for my media production work last year. The High bit codec Canon provides is phenomenal compared to other mirrorless DSLRs out there.
When I compare footage of EOS R and A7III I think the A7III looks much cleaner. A7III comes up on top if you actually spend some time to configure the system. It takes a bit of effort but really worth it as you only have to configure it once, then it is very easy to use. - The Sony Autofocus is faster and more accurate than EOS R (If you set it correctly: example: Face priority in AF, register face, AF Drive speed normal, AF track sens, Focus area Wide for blogging) - There is a setting in the Sony menu to disable heat warning: Auto Power OFF Temp. Try also changing the monitor brightness if the camera overheats - Switch picture profile to PP10 (HLG). Change sharpness to -7. Expose zebras for 95%. The image quality, colour science and dynamic range rivals that of Slog2 and is much easier to grade and looks good out of camera (Make sure that your editor supports and adjusts for the HLG gamma and colour space). It is superior to the cine profiles. HLG1 is for low light, HLG3 for high dynamic range and HLG2 is something in between. - The 6K oversampling is not only a stat, it really makes the image a lot sharper and cleaner (because of more information and the artefacts are scaled down) - Touch lock focus - Great IBIS - There was an upgrade to the A7III which further improved the camera, such as Eye Autofocus, Time-lapse etc. Many portrait photographers says they can’t live without the Sony eye AF. - You can set different profiles on Sony too - You can program all the buttons to whatever you need - You can punch into Super 35 mode for added versatility without losing much quality (There is still a 4K image, only less oversampling) - Set up the My Menu so that you can easily access key features. - The S&Q mode is an easy way to make quick 1080p video tImelapses and hyper lapses with support up to 1fps exposures. You’re welcome.
Jimmy Leonardsson i agree 100% I have the a7iii and a few lenses, and I couldn’t be happier? I know matti has it, or has had it and made a video back in the day about the autofocus being all messed up, the issue is that he was using canon lenses, the autofocus is insane and I rely on it all the time! You can see some concert photos on my website www.gunnarbjarki.com the autofocus was spot on everytime even in low light!. I really have 0 issues with this camera so when people get the eos R over it I get s bit confused and start thinking that maybe it’s a low key canon ad
JesseDriftwood I recently got the EOS R through a big winter sale and been loving it with my 35mm 1.8. Fully blame you guys. Ps. I actually don't always shoot the All I codec. But maybe at least I use nd filters so I'm not doing half bad.
Love this post Matti! I have been shooting with the EOS R since it first came out. I was the first person to get it from my dealer in Vancouver (I was REALLY eager to get it). I am still in love with it! I’ve shot Ads with it, and tons and tons of photos on pro gigs. It is my daily ‘driver’. I do use my 5D ii as a second camera with my 70-200 2.8 IS ii, and mostly use my m50 for clogging (easier on my old shoulders, lol), but I can’t say enough about this amazing camera. I may grab the Mark ii when it comes out, but my current focus is getting the 15-35 for street and video work (I also shoot and x100f for street sometimes). Keep up the awesome vlog... you’re my RUclips guru!
Your comment on the custom shooting modes is golden, I shoot sports and often use a 7d 2 or 80d and set one shooting mode to sports photo settings and one too video and it makes it sooooooo easy
I got one myself and I couldn’t be more happy, I did a lot research before but my first professional camera and it’s awesome, specially coming from a crop sensor camera
Tried it, loved it. Still prefer using the Sony a7III though, it's grown on me! I think for doing what we're doing, these cameras are fantastic, especially the R with the flip out screen 🔥
My favorite camera is the Canon EOS RP, because I was finally able to purchase a full-frame camera and the eye autofocus is the greatest camera innovation in the past 5 years.

I don't really use mine for video, but I shoot concerts and club events with it regularly for work. I've never once had a problem and never looked back. It's so much better in dark room scenarios than any of their DSLR's. Honestly, it's the best camera for me… until the R5 comes out - eve that is really just for the FPS it can shoot.
77dris oh yeah? Show me the proof please because your comment is absolute bollocks! This was a feature specifically highlighted to us at the press launches for the A7III, A6500 and others. The first one to do this was the A6500 and I asked the engineers “does it harm the camera” I was told absolutely not, it might make your camera warm that’s all. So I look forward to your evidence here but if you don’t have any then PLEASE don’t talk like you know what you are taking about so you can justify your camera purchase because it’s just embarrassing! 🙂 Even the little RX100 VII which used to overheat within minutes no longer does it with this option enabled. At the launch in Dublin I asked again if there was a downside to this? Again I was told no, it will just make the camera warm. Oh I also own the EOS-R and Fuji cameras and many more. I have no affiliation. I just use the right tool for the job. I also believe in facts. Too much BS written and spoken as facts these days.
Love my R. Far and away the best all around camera I've ever used. Also, the viewfinder is really sharp, something that was missing from previous mirrorless cameras.
Drágan Depends entirely on your budget. I got an R last month and couldn't be happier for now. If I start doing more on-location pro jobs, 2 card slots may end up a dealbreaker. But the R was only $2,400 WITH the 24-105, adapter, and a memory card. Can't beat it for the price and will even make for a great B roll camera months down the line if stated scenario happens. You will definitely pay for the changes made in the II out of your bank account.
I currently have the Panasonic G7, it’s a solid camera and I love it! But it’s a micro4/3 and I would love to have more mega pixels, and more Lense selection. I want to get into street photography, but continue to shoot video. So... I may sell it save as save up a bit.
Matti, I'm concerned with your A7iii experience. I just streamed a twelve hour live concert on two constantly running and had absolutely no issues in a warm room filled with people and musicians. You may have a bum camera! I'm not saying this out of defense just saying it because I have pushed mine much more than streaming on twitch without an issue.
I was thinking the same thing. I’ve never had this issue nor did I change my temp warning settings at all. I just set it and forget it until I’m down with my several-hours long stream. The one thing I don’t do is record on camera at the same time. I just record through the clean hdmi feed on my computer software.
Sorry to see her go. I really think the Canon 1DX Mark II was the camera that put both you and Peter on the map. Such great B-Roll with that camera....she'll be missed. You should sign the box so the next owner knows this was 'The Original Matti Haapoja' camera that shot all that juicy B-Roll with Peter back in the day.....just a suggestion!
@@joshgarver1197 I listened, and I've heard this function belongs to the range of things that make this camera better... when most modern ones have it too. So why is it quoted ? As these kinds of videos are meant to separate cameras, based on their respective pros and cons. Each camera has a shutter release, strap eyelets, battery door (etc.), so it's not worth mentioning them. Only if some specific ones really stand apart and bring real bonuses. Same for profile/custom settings if all cameras have it. What does the EOS R has, and no other camera does, that makes it standing apart from the bunch and more attractive to us and him ? And a keeper. That's what, truly, is interesting.

I started shooting with Sigma in 1999... most colleagues would laugh. They stopped after a few months. And now ? Well... nobody's now making fun of Sigma, and its users (Canon engineers included). For their prices, Canon R lenses should perform twice as well... to the very least !

The way you feel about the R is how I feel about the RP, for my needs it’s the perfect camera and even shoots in 24p now. And you can add a log profile with the Technicolor's CineStyle Profile or just shoot in a custom profile where you drop the contrast and saturation.
Amazing how you can find something bad (sometimes its just silly) to say about any other brand but not a single thing about canon. Hmmm. And all the truly bad things like missing IBIS you just quickly glance over as if its no big issue. Call me a sceptic.
Oh wait what are the choices for the eos r mount with ois yeah. And yeah lol again. Only canon fanatics and sellouts say that and why? Cause canon doesn’t have it. If the next get comes with ibis this feature will be a game changer and so on and on and on. I completely agree. I love Matti but this feels like a biased video. The Sony literally is better than this camera in almost every way. (Almost). I’d get this camera if I was invested in Canon lenses but I wouldn’t change from Sony to go to this camera. Especially with Canon’s bad track record of crippling their cameras
Look funny thing is I am pretty sure that Full frame 4k in high fps will be a big deal in a few weeks on this channel, why?!?!? 1dxiii is about to come out and as with any other canon gear this channel and other sellouts will hype it up. So it's funny how the timing and this whole idea of specs don't matter until they do as it will when 1dxiii comes out. And yes there is equivalent channels for sony, fuji etc. Easiest way to spot em is extreme bias towards a product line and glancing over glaring issues as if they are nothing to worry about. This dude got talent but is selling it out to a corporation.
Two reasons I think many are getting the EOS R, they already have canon lenses and an adapter makes its easy to use those lenses and the menu is Canon so picking it up and using is usally done in a few minutes. I rented one a few weeks ago, it was very easy to pick up and start taking pictures. I wanted to try that new RF 70-200 lens but they were all out, I hear its pretty good lens. My Favorite Camera, when its for personal use, I like my ol' 7Dmkii and believe it not I like my little 200D its small fun walk around camera.
The beauty of mirrorless is that you have so many options with the adapter. The RF lenses are expensive for a reason. Canon didn't skimp out on image quality and the glass is part of the reason why I think I can leave my slow, but beautiful GFX system.
For the Sony overheating... that doesn’t seem right. Tons use the a7 and a6400 for live streaming for endless streams and they have no issues. I believe there’s a Sony menu option that lets you set whether the heat warning comes on a medium or high temps. Since it will be on a tripod you should set this to high and it shouldn’t overheat anymore... will just be hot to the touch.
I spent years ignoring Canon due to some low specs. I am trying the EOS R for the last 2 months and I am loving it. Now I understand Canon. They don’t make false promises and the thing they do, the do it well like the 1080p you mentioned.

@Nicklas Yes, I just watched him as a guest on David Oastler's channel. A guy called The Everything Man. By the way, that just means he talks about everything. One thing he touched on was how much more colour gradable the EOS R is compared to an A7iii. Try some colour grading and watch your skies start to fall apart. The much higher bit rate together with C-Log makes the EOS R considerably better and easier for colour grading. He also loves the flip-out screen for vlogging and the overall look of the image. The still images look better on the EOS R in every side-by-side comparison I've watched and that's tons of them. The RF glass is generally sharper too. For all the boasting about Sony's eye AF, every comparison I watch - the EOS R generally has a better hit rate of "eyes" (not eyelashes) being in focus.
the latest sony cameras are so much better in my opinion, the eos r only has better screen and lenses, there is a reason why sony has dethroned nikon and canon in terms of sells ;)

I make a lot of videos in really hot and humid greenhouses and the EOS R has never let me down. It is a great camera for RUclips!

Agreed! I've used the EOS-R professionally since the day it came out. I used the t2i professionally 10yrs ago so its definetly user.

Changing my A7iii to EOSR was the best decision I could make for my media production work last year. The High bit codec Canon provides is phenomenal compared to other mirrorless DSLRs out there.
When I compare footage of EOS R and A7III I think the A7III looks much cleaner. A7III comes up on top if you actually spend some time to configure the system. It takes a bit of effort but really worth it as you only have to configure it once, then it is very easy to use.
- The Sony Autofocus is faster and more accurate than EOS R (If you set it correctly: example: Face priority in AF, register face, AF Drive speed normal, AF track sens, Focus area Wide for blogging)
- There is a setting in the Sony menu to disable heat warning: Auto Power OFF Temp. Try also changing the monitor brightness if the camera overheats
- Switch picture profile to PP10 (HLG). Change sharpness to -7. Expose zebras for 95%. The image quality, colour science and dynamic range rivals that of Slog2 and is much easier to grade and looks good out of camera (Make sure that your editor supports and adjusts for the HLG gamma and colour space). It is superior to the cine profiles. HLG1 is for low light, HLG3 for high dynamic range and HLG2 is something in between.
- The 6K oversampling is not only a stat, it really makes the image a lot sharper and cleaner (because of more information and the artefacts are scaled down)
- Touch lock focus
- Great IBIS
- There was an upgrade to the A7III which further improved the camera, such as Eye Autofocus, Time-lapse etc. Many portrait photographers says they can’t live without the Sony eye AF.
- You can set different profiles on Sony too
- You can program all the buttons to whatever you need
- You can punch into Super 35 mode for added versatility without losing much quality (There is still a 4K image, only less oversampling)
- Set up the My Menu so that you can easily access key features.
- The S&Q mode is an easy way to make quick 1080p video tImelapses and hyper lapses with support up to 1fps exposures.

Jimmy Leonardsson i agree 100% I have the a7iii and a few lenses, and I couldn’t be happier? I know matti has it, or has had it and made a video back in the day about the autofocus being all messed up, the issue is that he was using canon lenses, the autofocus is insane and I rely on it all the time! You can see some concert photos on my website www.gunnarbjarki.com the autofocus was spot on everytime even in low light!. I really have 0 issues with this camera so when people get the eos R over it I get s bit confused and start thinking that maybe it’s a low key canon ad

Love this post Matti! I have been shooting with the EOS R since it first came out. I was the first person to get it from my dealer in Vancouver (I was REALLY eager to get it). I am still in love with it! I’ve shot Ads with it, and tons and tons of photos on pro gigs. It is my daily ‘driver’. I do use my 5D ii as a second camera with my 70-200 2.8 IS ii, and mostly use my m50 for clogging (easier on my old shoulders, lol), but I can’t say enough about this amazing camera.
I may grab the Mark ii when it comes out, but my current focus is getting the 15-35 for street and video work (I also shoot and x100f for street sometimes).

Your comment on the custom shooting modes is golden, I shoot sports and often use a 7d 2 or 80d and set one shooting mode to sports photo settings and one too video and it makes it sooooooo easy

I just recently bought the EOS R and for me its doing a great job... glad I made the purchase..
I got one myself and I couldn’t be more happy, I did a lot research before but my first professional camera and it’s awesome, specially coming from a crop sensor camera
Tried it, loved it. Still prefer using the Sony a7III though, it's grown on me! I think for doing what we're doing, these cameras are fantastic, especially the R with the flip out screen 🔥
My favorite camera is the Canon EOS RP, because I was finally able to purchase a full-frame camera and the eye autofocus is the greatest camera innovation in the past 5 years.

I don't really use mine for video, but I shoot concerts and club events with it regularly for work. I've never once had a problem and never looked back. It's so much better in dark room scenarios than any of their DSLR's. Honestly, it's the best camera for me… until the R5 comes out - eve that is really just for the FPS it can shoot.

This was a feature specifically highlighted to us at the press launches for the A7III, A6500 and others. The first one to do this was the A6500 and I asked the engineers “does it harm the camera” I was told absolutely not, it might make your camera warm that’s all. So I look forward to your evidence here but if you don’t have any then PLEASE don’t talk like you know what you are taking about so you can justify your camera purchase because it’s just embarrassing! 🙂
Even the little RX100 VII which used to overheat within minutes no longer does it with this option enabled. At the launch in Dublin I asked again if there was a downside to this? Again I was told no, it will just make the camera warm.
Oh I also own the EOS-R and Fuji cameras and many more. I have no affiliation. I just use the right tool for the job. I also believe in facts. Too much BS written and spoken as facts these days.

Love my R. Far and away the best all around camera I've ever used. Also, the viewfinder is really sharp, something that was missing from previous mirrorless cameras.

Drágan Depends entirely on your budget. I got an R last month and couldn't be happier for now. If I start doing more on-location pro jobs, 2 card slots may end up a dealbreaker. But the R was only $2,400 WITH the 24-105, adapter, and a memory card. Can't beat it for the price and will even make for a great B roll camera months down the line if stated scenario happens. You will definitely pay for the changes made in the II out of your bank account.

I have had my EOSR six months a go and I have taken it to Sri Lanka to vlog with. And the lens I bought was EF 17-40 brilliant camera 👍🏼

I currently have the Panasonic G7, it’s a solid camera and I love it! But it’s a micro4/3 and I would love to have more mega pixels, and more Lense selection. I want to get into street photography, but continue to shoot video. So... I may sell it save as save up a bit.

Matti, I'm concerned with your A7iii experience. I just streamed a twelve hour live concert on two constantly running and had absolutely no issues in a warm room filled with people and musicians. You may have a bum camera! I'm not saying this out of defense just saying it because I have pushed mine much more than streaming on twitch without an issue.
Most youtubers are lazy and don't put the fair time in to cameras they aren't familiar with.....at least when it comes to sony cameras.
Did you set your temp warning to “high”? I’m thinking Matti doesn’t know about this setting. Necessary for streaming for most.

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve never had this issue nor did I change my temp warning settings at all. I just set it and forget it until I’m down with my several-hours long stream. The one thing I don’t do is record on camera at the same time. I just record through the clean hdmi feed on my computer software.

Sorry to see her go. I really think the Canon 1DX Mark II was the camera that put both you and Peter on the map. Such great B-Roll with that camera....she'll be missed. You should sign the box so the next owner knows this was 'The Original Matti Haapoja' camera that shot all that juicy B-Roll with Peter back in the day.....just a suggestion!

So why is it quoted ? As these kinds of videos are meant to separate cameras, based on their respective pros and cons.
Each camera has a shutter release, strap eyelets, battery door (etc.), so it's not worth mentioning them. Only if some specific ones really stand apart and bring real bonuses.
Same for profile/custom settings if all cameras have it.
What does the EOS R has, and no other camera does, that makes it standing apart from the bunch and more attractive to us and him ? And a keeper.

I started shooting with Sigma in 1999... most colleagues would laugh. They stopped after a few months.
And now ? Well... nobody's now making fun of Sigma, and its users (Canon engineers included).
For their prices, Canon R lenses should perform twice as well... to the very least !

The way you feel about the R is how I feel about the RP, for my needs it’s the perfect camera and even shoots in 24p now.
And you can add a log profile with the Technicolor's CineStyle Profile or just shoot in a custom profile where you drop the contrast and saturation.

Amazing how you can find something bad (sometimes its just silly) to say about any other brand but not a single thing about canon. Hmmm. And all the truly bad things like missing IBIS you just quickly glance over as if its no big issue. Call me a sceptic.

I completely agree. I love Matti but this feels like a biased video. The Sony literally is better than this camera in almost every way. (Almost). I’d get this camera if I was invested in Canon lenses but I wouldn’t change from Sony to go to this camera. Especially with Canon’s bad track record of crippling their cameras
Look funny thing is I am pretty sure that Full frame 4k in high fps will be a big deal in a few weeks on this channel, why?!?!? 1dxiii is about to come out and as with any other canon gear this channel and other sellouts will hype it up. So it's funny how the timing and this whole idea of specs don't matter until they do as it will when 1dxiii comes out. And yes there is equivalent channels for sony, fuji etc. Easiest way to spot em is extreme bias towards a product line and glancing over glaring issues as if they are nothing to worry about. exactly...it's just plain and simly wrong, and IMHO just perceived and thought that way because of the catchy name...*dual pixel autofocus*....
Two reasons I think many are getting the EOS R, they already have canon lenses and an adapter makes its easy to use those lenses and the menu is Canon so picking it up and using is usally done in a few minutes. I rented one a few weeks ago, it was very easy to pick up and start taking pictures. I wanted to try that new RF 70-200 lens but they were all out, I hear its pretty good lens.
My Favorite Camera, when its for personal use, I like my ol' 7Dmkii and believe it not I like my little 200D its small fun walk around camera.

The beauty of mirrorless is that you have so many options with the adapter. The RF lenses are expensive for a reason. Canon didn't skimp out on image quality and the glass is part of the reason why I think I can leave my slow, but beautiful GFX system.
For the Sony overheating... that doesn’t seem right. Tons use the a7 and a6400 for live streaming for endless streams and they have no issues. I believe there’s a Sony menu option that lets you set whether the heat warning comes on a medium or high temps. Since it will be on a tripod you should set this to high and it shouldn’t overheat anymore... will just be hot to the touch.

I've bid a few pro projects where EOS R was required.
I spent years ignoring Canon due to some low specs. I am trying the EOS R for the last 2 months and I am loving it. Now I understand Canon. They don’t make false promises and the thing they do, the do it well like the 1080p you mentioned.

@Nicklas Yes, I just watched him as a guest on David Oastler's channel. A guy called The Everything Man. By the way, that just means he talks about everything.
One thing he touched on was how much more colour gradable the EOS R is compared to an A7iii. Try some colour grading and watch your skies start to fall apart. The much higher bit rate together with C-Log makes the EOS R considerably better and easier for colour grading. He also loves the flip-out screen for vlogging and the overall look of the image.
The still images look better on the EOS R in every side-by-side comparison I've watched and that's tons of them. The RF glass is generally sharper too. For all the boasting about Sony's eye AF, every comparison I watch - the EOS R generally has a better hit rate of "eyes" (not eyelashes) being in focus.
The EOS R is a beast! It’s tough to put into words why it’s so great, but like you said, once someone gets their hands on it, it makes sense.
the latest sony cameras are so much better in my opinion, the eos r only has better screen and lenses, there is a reason why sony has dethroned nikon and canon in terms of sells ;)
