Peter McKinnon hey peter not sure you’ll ever read this but I’m newer to photography and recently had my whole kit stolen.... I was wondering if maybe had any used gear ? Or knew of anyone with any ? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Keep up the amazing work !
I’m a filmmaking student without a camera, I’m desperate Peter 😂 Honestly even if I don’t win thanks for the awesome content, always enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work 👍
Edited: Just got the R and the way you can shoot photos and then quickly record is setup your video settings in C3 mode, then go to photo mode. Then while you are in photo mode you hit the record button on top and you are recording video with the C3 settings video settings! Mind blown, this is a game changer! Hope that helps Pete!
It sounded like you were trying to sell the camera, especially when you were making the cons of camera sound like pros. “The lack of 120p is good because it will challenge me.” Cmon...
Yea I was wondering that too...A lack of 120fps is a good thing huh?? So buy a new camera that has 60fps instead of just slowing down to 60fps if you want smh. Was very disappointed in this Peter keep it real.
Half Truths: Canon intentionally limits you in ways that are inexcusable IMHO. - Selling you a full frame camera and then NOT allowing full frame 4k - not going 1080 120FPS - not stabilizing the sensor Sony & Panasonic both offer these basics. what they lack is the Canon color and the Dual Pixel AF. Sony has upgraded their focus systems though - getting close. Panasonic has upgraded their color in the GH5 which looks really nice - almost too clean though.
I dont think its an excuse. You want the best for your money, then why are these companies trying to limit their stuff? Sony and Panasonic offer more, why cant Canon/Nikon do it? At this point they are just another "Apple"-like company.
Canon can't offer these options because their sensor technology sucks and is behind by many years. Maybe next years model won't have a recycled sensor from 3 years ago with technology from 5 years ago.
They've been doing this since at least the 300D / first gen Digital Rebel (the all-silver 6mp one). It had the innards of the 20D, yet plenty of features (bracketing comes to mind) were deliberately disabled in firmware and required 3rd party hacks to be unlocked. That was the camera that forever destroyed Canon's credibility in my eyes. The only Canon products I've touched since were their printers, about which I've got no complaints.
for your resons is why I decided to go with son. I am waiting for the Sony 7s iii to come out before buying a camera. this will be my first camera ever.. besides a smart phone. I just hope the 7s iii has a forward facing screen.
I love it when reviewers of this camera mention the 1.7 crop factor in 4k ' well just get another lens' ! Yeah sure as I have lots of money to spend and instead of carrying around a smaller form factor camera as this is benefit of mirrorless. I can carry more lenses instead !
This is well said. It is a glaring fault of the camera. If people want a crop sensor camera then they'd buy one with appropriate lenses on the market to fit that crop (ie. the GH5).
@@alexworks9659 true but nobody is expecting an arri or red to be full frame and there are more than enough lenses available to fit said crop. Hence why if arri comes out with a new camera, users don't have to worry about focal length changing. Like I said. If people want a crop camera there are more than enough options. The issue with the Canon is its a stop gap until they get the tech to do 4k full frame with no issues. Which at that point will making lenses purchased to fit a 1.7x crop useless. In short the people who have an issue with the crop simply aren't looking for a cropped sensor on a full frame body. It might not matter to you and that's cool but it does matter to other people. Everyone is entitled to their preference and thankfully we are about to enter a time where there more choices camera-wise then ever before for hybrid shooters.
Yes, and put on a ef-s lens and speaking of getting better Quality with log in the same sentence is a little awkward... poor lens but good settings only to compeed the “holding-back“-politics of canon? How stupid is that? Use crop if you want, but dont make it look like something good, it isnt. Period. And there are other issues and you know it Peter. You wanted a ff mirrorless, now you like crop in video? Not logical.
no more 120p b roll. hes switching to a camera that cant. well, for now, in 2 months he is switching back and has a new video, why he switched back. like his buddy with his amazing A7-3 that replaced his canon, well for a little while. sony sponsor video.
I tried switching to the R after shooting a 5D3 for years... size, touchscreen, and swivel screen are very cool, but I agree that it does feel a little slower. Still has that beautiful Canon look though!
What I like about your video is the fact you are always enthusiastic about your topics. Others discuss the camera with specs and what they don’t like. You discuss what you do like about the camera and what it can do for you and not making it sound like a review or critique. You discuss the lenses and the built in ND filter on the adapter. Anyone watching your channel knows how useful you find ND filters. For those who say.. the tech is 3 years old etc. It doesn’t matter what equipment you have. It is the person behind the camera Great video as always
While I absolutely would never switch from the 1dxii to the EOS R, Peter could film a great project with a ham sandwich. And that’s what the EOS R is, a ham sandwich.
SwitchRich and when you bite into it, the small piece of center ham is not tender enough to separate so it pulls all of the ham into that one bite. Leaving you with only dry bread and a smatter of mayonnaise.
The record button on top will always start rolling a video using whatever your C3 video mode is set to. So you can have that set to auto exposure (if you just want to make sure you get the shot no matter your settings) or you could have it set to your 120fps (if you are a weirdo like me and will still use the mode even in 720p) or you can set it to full manual in 60fps so that it keeps the same settings your photos were just in (this is almost certainly how I will use it).
Duh. He got paid to promote a new piece of gear, and decided it was no better, probably worse, than what he was shooting with. Im a Canon user for 10 years due to various reasons (I like it, changing brands isnt cost effective, Im not rich... you name it.). But if someone like him still sticks to a single brand while other brands have been killing it, especially with video. There is only one logical conclusion: Hes paid handsomely to do exactly that.
I picked this camera up and love it. My own perspective is all about personal skills and the functionality needed to learn and get better in this hobby (it's a hobby for me). In my case, this camera has everything I need at the moment and is working very well in the "field" - although, I recognize that spec to spec comparisons would make it seem weaker in relation to a couple other cameras. In my actual use of it - it is really, really good.
It's a nice camera, I just can't justify the purchase knowing that Sony blows this out of the water at a similar/lower price point. I'm a Canon shooter too lol.
Sony was just got out of the hospital for being crippled with the lenses for so long. Still can't compete with Canon's legion of lenses. For the price, the new EOS R has some features many cameras don't have between the body, lens adapters and new control rings. Even the ergonomics rules, enabling all fingers to fit. But to know that the EOS R and following models will take every EF, EF-S and RF lens is amazing. The EOS R won't have some features, but it has more than enough that even other manufacturers will have to make changes to adapt to some of it.
Hell, other than the ff vs aps-c bit, the Fuji X-T3 destroys this camera. 10 bit internal. Great f log. 400 mb/s capture. 120fps in 1080. 60fps in 4k...that's 10 bit, internal, 400mb/s 4k.
Hi Peter. I hope my views are not taken in a wrong way. We all know your love for canon. But don't you think of all the mirrorless cameras launched recently, Fuji XT-3 took the cherry? I mean for the price point and the features (4k, 60fps, 4.2.0, 4.2.2 to list a few), its overtaken both Nikon and canon by big margin. Again this is not criticism but just an observation. Peace :)
It doesn't take the cherry, because it's not FF. Everything else looks amazing (though I haven't tried it), but it can't go 1on1 with the others due to its smaller sensor. That said, I'd probably get a xt3 over the eos r.
Agreed it’s a smaller sensor but then again not every needs a FF. crop sensor is for masses. Even in that fielding crop sensor mirrorless I don’t see Nikon or canon anywhere near it. I used FF for ten years before switching back to crop sensor with XT-3 release. So far verrrrey happy
Kunal Tewari - I use Canon and Fuji, I don’t see how the X-T3 is a better choice for him as a vlogger and photographer other than it having some better video features but without the dual-pixel autofocus and it being smaller, when he is used to the Canon way and has an existing selection of great FF Canon lenses. I use Fuji when speed is not imperative, when it is just for myself and I want a lighter setup, but if I want reliability, great battery, ergonomics, fast focusing, and quick and easy adjustments of settings on the fly without moving my eye from the viewfinder, my Canon is a far better choice, plus I have some better big fast lenses for it, which due to the small grip on the Fuji is less ideal for larger lenses.
Martin Andersen dear Martin. I guess you completely missed the point/context of my message above here. In post earlier I never recommended for him to use Fuji over canon for vlogging. Well in that case canon EOS R misses that mark by leaps and bounds (huge 4K crop, unless you use heavy wide angle lens). My message here was when it comes to mirrorless cameras (FF or crop sensor), Fuji has gone way ahead of canon. So just be coz he is a canon user or probably paid by them, you cannot promote a shitty camera when it’s vlogging capabilities are hugely limiting. I am a huge fan of Peter McKinnon but that doesn’t mean I have to blindly accept everything he suggests.
I think I understood about 10% of what he said, but he says it with so much enthusiasm that it’s still compelling. I stumbled across this channel recently. I’ve always been interested in possibly getting involved in photography, but haven’t done so. That’s probably part of the reason why my comprehension level on this topic is currently low, but it’s still interesting.
Watching this a noticed that because you are way invested into Canon system you missed all these benefits of mirrorless for at least five years! Sonys and Fujis and others are way ahead.
Melker Larsson I didn’t have the t2. But by all accounts, features-wise, it’s wayyy better. But if you have a t2 already, maybe not worth an upgrade. I absolutely loveee my t3 already though. Steep learning curve, but it feels amazing. My dream camera
older fuji cameras simply doesn't even compete in the video department. The X-T1 a few generations back for example has horrid false color and moire, The sony A7 from around the same time smokes it out of the water, at least as far as video is concerned. Though the last and this generation improves things immensely, they still haven't shake the "don't take a video on a fuji" image yet.
I'm sorry but it does seem a bit like you are making excuses for yourself to make up for the cameras clear faults. I've been there man. "This camera doesn't have 120fps so it's challenging me" is such a nice optimistic way of looking at trying to use a camera that failed to meet yours and everyone else's expectations and standards
teknokracy no shit right? It’s main purpose is for taking pictures. If you want recording go buy a 5000 dollar cam recorder. It’s a great camera. Keep in mind 10 years from now dslr cameras will be absolute. The smart phones are getting more and more advanced
I am a Canon user for over two decades now (I switched from film to digital in 1997 with the Canon PowerShot 600). My FF continues to be an aging 5dMk2 and I am doing some video with my SL2. I have been waiting for Canon to catch up with Sony on the mirrorless/4k platform ... and, sadly, ... I am still waiting. You convey enthusiasm for the R - this may be, in part, owing to having sold a part of your soul to Canon (I am not accusatory, I get it that you run a business and all - but, you did magic ... which is theater ... so the enthusiasm may just be theater - just saying). My reaction to the R system is ... meh. I did a hiking tour in Portugal earlier this year. Both guides were photographers and both were using Sony. I was captivated with the build quality, performance and images they were garnering. If not for the huge expense and time/energy to learn new menus, etc., I'd be temped switch. Meanwhile ... I will hold onto my aging 5dMk2 and SL2 and likely pour my resources into a DJI Mavic2 Pro once they get the firmware tricked out. Canon needs to up its game on the mirrorless platform ... and soon.
Just upgraded to the mk4 from mk2, had that one since release day of mk2. Very happy with the mk4. From what i understand with sony is poor batterylife digital view finder is a negative and the IS is very sensitive to impact
i totally agree, Canon and Nikon mirrorless are 3 years behind sony technology and Olympus which has impressive results on a micro 4/3 sensor. With 2.5 Millions subscribers, Peter is one of the main engine of Canon propaganda in the North America and he is going to not be fair for the sake of publicity. I love Peter's work and he was the trigger for me to start invest more time in educating me in photography and last year he was a guru for me, but to be honest to switch from DSLR to Canon R is the worst idea you can have right now. Nikon embarrassed itself with the launch of their mirrorless system and i expected Canon to be more spectacular, but they are both behind the mirrorless technology. So stick to your current gear and if you want to buy a mirrorless wait for the releases which are about to come from Fuji, Panasonic and Olympus which i think will be the leader of the game. P.S. I own a Nikon d5100 from 2011 and I can't afford a new camera, but when I'll make the upgrade it will probably be a Canon DLSR
all i can say to this is A7iii. Not everyone has lens already to compensate for that crop and all that tech that the EOS R has, Sony has already done. I just bought the A7iii and its arriving and from all the reseach ive done it looks like im in good hands.
Using this camera for the 1st time right now and I LOVE IT. I've used Reds, Canons + Sonys Cinema Cams/DSLRs etc and this cam doesn't feel disappointing at all. The HD is great, and once you get used to the menu it's a breeze. The specs make it sound underwhelming but trust me this camera is fassst. Also i tested autofocus with lights off and got 10 out of 10 photos in focus so yes I am a happy camper.
2 years later and I just bought this. I’m no pro which is why I didn’t go with the newest and greatest on the market. That being said, I love this camera so much that I can’t even describe it in a simple RUclips comment lol
@@feydanmedia I’m using it primarily for video. I also got a Rode microphone attachment and it’s just an awesome camera. I’m still just learning about all the things it can do. I’d give it 10/10 though 👍
@@portraitblake what you think? Played with it yet? We just got the Rode VideoMic for it as well. Loving the camera but definitely needed a nice Mic for videos
Stefan Thyron, Casey N. doesn’t use 120fps and he’s got over 10 million subs. Can you link us to your work or maybe some other RUclipsr that has done better than Casey N who also uses Canon.
David Ramos , Casey is a story telling genius with an amazing personality. He's filmed a lot of his vlogs with his phone camera. At the end of the day gear isn't the most important thing for success on RUclips. However, if someone is going to spend over $2000 on a camera, 120fps is really nice to have.
3rd time watching this Peter. I wish there was a way for me to explain to you how helpful you’ve been. I hope you are doing well and can’t wait to see your video tomorrow. I made a big step and got an EOS R myself!
Peter you should definitely talk about the Canon EOS RP, every RUclipsr has been ripping it apart for video but what do you think of it as a stills camera
Not once since I started watching your videos years ago have I disliked a video. Until today. The whole video I thought “wow, seems like he’s sacrificing a lot of what he uses in his camera” and then I realized it’s in association with Canon... and that you were selling out. How about the 1 card slot Peter? Or lack of 120fps? And the crop at 4K? These are all things you’re sacrificing for some brand deal. I’m guessing you’ll wait a few weeks, maybe months, and go back to using your 1DX MK2.
Robinson Media sell out? Come on, the guy has given you so much free content over the last two years. You know he’s a canon users. He also pointed out what he didn’t like. Who cares that he’s associated with canon. Good for him. Go create something as good and then see what happens when people comment on your videos.
No 120fps is a real shame. Can't think as to why they wouldn't include it here.. they must know it is a major selling point for Sony's mirrorless range. In face, it is what has been tempting me to switch to Sony for a while. When this was revealed I was over the moon to think finally Canon were releasing a mirrorless camera that could shoot at 120fps and I could not even think about going to Sony - I was shocked at finding out it isn't there. Maybe in 3 more years...
No IBIS, no dual card slots, cropped 4K, no 120fps in 1080p, no eye af... yeah great camera to have in 2018. THE one thing it does have though is the flippy screen. You gotta give em that.
No limitation for upcoming Mirrorless from Canon? 🤔 They will listen (we hoping to) our opinion about this camera and make another one with yours features request! But hey, We got 8bit Log video file format in smaller body, dont we agree?
it's amazing. the T3i has a flip screen but Sony hasn't done it yet haha (except the a6400) but still, it needs to make it's way up to their full frame line up next
@@_chrisvision really you used a C200 or 300 or better? Oh you tried to use a photo camera (SLR) to do what is a secondary function that it was designed for. That alone shows that you are a noob amatuer and don't have a fukn clue about what you speak.
Everyone's really focused on the switch from the 1DX Mark II to this, but I'd be REALLY curious to know more about how it compares to the 5D Mark IV since they're a little closer to the same price range.
I believe the record button automatically allows you to record when in photo mode and your settings in C3 are the settings for that hybrid video mode that allows you to switch quickly without changing modes that you explained in the video
2.5M subs then to close to 6M subs now is amazing and well deserved! Your knowledge, talent and energy are welcomed always. Thank you! Btw, I'm very anxious to see what camera tech will be like when you get to 10M subs. Until then, PEACE!!
Come on, even APS-C camera such as A6300 which is few years old now does 10 bit with recorded or 8 bit in camera S-log 2 and S-log 3 and you can even achieve 12 stops of dynamic range for well under USD 1,000 and no cropped 4K. Take A6500 and you also get IBIS. This canon R is overpriced and already too old given the specs...
Wild Geese Vlog but you get what you paid for, just go to any Sony forum and read the issues with many of their cameras. Sony made the A7R3 in China to cut cost. It sure doesn’t sound like they rather have it being reliable.
@@Davitor1 if I ever trusted everything that is in forums I would believe Earth is flat. I trust my personal experience and experience of other reliable sources and not forums...
Wild Geese Vlog are you aware of what’s happening with cameras with IBIS after 5 years? now imagine 10 years. As the laws of physics are non-optional the more moving parts any camera has the more it’s subject to failure in longevity.
I have Sony A7 but still, I don't think Canon EOS R is a bad choice if you have the money and if you have already used Canon and has a good collection of lenses, just because the integration with existing Canon lenses and EOS R is much more smooth than another brand. This make sense if you want to go mirrorless which is suitable for specific photographers only (I have talked with some wedding for example and they think it would be better for them for example)
I got a chance to play with the EOS R at a local camera store recently and I was super impressed with it. In my opinion the best thing was the viewfinder. It felt so quick and responsive compared to some EVF’s and it was SO sharp! Everything else felt very responsive about the camera as well and the menus were really good as always. I’m just bummed about the crop in 4K but beyond that it was pretty sweet.
I just got the EOS R, it is great. I shoot product and life style. The easiest way to change to video, is to click on the red Botton on the top. That's it. To get started press Mode -Info make your selection. Then you can shoot some video. Then Click the mode - info again and go back to photo. It remembers what ever setting. Now you can shoot photos. Press the top red button again and you are recording in video. Don't have to press Mode - Info anymore. Unless you want to change a setting on the video mode. Like AV or TV etc. Hope that answers that question you had about taking too long change between video and still. Keep up the good work. Loved your movie about the bucket shot. Amazing shot.
I just can't get excited about this camera. I do love my Sony A7 III but I do like to still get excited for other gear. Why does Canon refuse to let their full-frame cameras shoot full 4K without cropping? Also, one SD card slot? Also, 720p for 120fps!?
I went from the 80D to the A7SII and there are pros and cons to both. Miss the swivel touch screen display (nothing a wide angle lens can fix) and huge battery but I love the compactness and 4K with S-Log and full frame sensor on the Sony.
I've been watching this comments section since the first time. The fact that you deleted some of the comments that gives you critiques (even the one who said it with respect), really disapointing..I thought you're better than this man. And of course if we see 120p in your future videos..then we know what it means
He didn't delete my comment. I felt bad and deleted it myself. I was just upset that an influential rockstar would have have content like this. People listen and don't know better. I would have much rather DMed him but no one reads that. I was not hoping to have such an impacting comment. In fact I was ok with it getting lost in the wind and not gaining traction. He's a good dude.
This reply is like a video being about apple jacks and you reply about fruit loops. Pretty much all pro grade brands are reliable. Fuji, Nikon, Canon etc. Additionally, this camera in question is TOO NEW to be proven reliable. Lastly, this video is not about reliability.
Mauricio Fernandez Canon Camera’s are built like tanks and I personally picked up a EOS-r and felt how durable and heavy it was despite it being smaller.
Zak Viemon just discovered? He’s been at one of their headquarters in a video a month or more ago. He’s definitely being paid, but people are blind sheep 🐑 that believe anything these guys say.
Christopher Menz it really depends on what your definition of getting paid is. Genuinly no hate to the guy, I don't blame himm, I'm sure we'd all do the same. He'll deffo be getting all of his gear for zilch and so much more. He never even whispers about another brand. Hate to break it to you but this is nothing but a commercial. It's actually worse than a commercial because it's pretending not to be. Have a good day!
Sad to see Peter moving on, 1dx mk2 and Peter Mckinnon, THANK YOU for all the amazing content you guys made for us ! Now Peter + Canon EOS R .... LET's GO ! :D I just got the Panasonic G9 which is just amazing ! :D (well yeah, this Canon EOS R can full frame )
Nope. Gh5 + all Leica "Panasonic" Lenses are still my absolute favorite in terms of capabilites. Sensor size is not the most important thing 😊 Gh5 already had Vlog 10 bit 4:2:2 All Intra one year ago. That people even talk about the EOS R is crazy 😂
Two things: m43 and lousy continuous autofocus. Besides, you like what you like. He is used to full-frame Canon and has all the gear for it, including great expensive FF lenses. Why begrudge him being excited about a new toy? Those new Canon lenses are droolworthy to be sure, even if some of them are large.
@@msandersen you are right we shouldn't begrudge each other and personally I guess it is good that there is a large variety of cameras 😊 just wanted to recommend my favorite for others 😊
If you only look at price, dont look at the panasonic ff mirrorless camera, that body the s1 is rumored to be in the price range of 3k. the lenses price make sony and canon(talking about sony and canon top end) look super affordable. If those are the prices I cant afford that system. Just wait man, when the a7siii comes out we will see the a7iii be cheaper on the used market.
Man Awesome timing. About 7 Years ago, I stopped shooting photography because of other commitments in like. Now, that I am able to get back into photograpy again I have to start doing research on what is out there for me to tap into. I do miss my 5D MKIII. However, I feel like there are some many platforms out there that can help me get back into photography again. Now Canon decides to release such a great camera and new platform, I am in need of this set-up. Thanks Peter I appreciated it so much for the information and reviews.
2018 was the year the LUMIX G9 came out. MOST people ignored it. Today, it's still my go-to camera. In fact, I'm buying another body today. It shoots 4K/60p. It shoots HLG. It shoots 10bit 4:2:2 internal. It shoots HEVC. It can adapt pretty much any lens (to MFT). But somehow, it got ignored. I don't want a camera that is going to bounce around my crop factor when I change video resolution. I still have a bunch of EF-L glass that I refuse to sell, and so I was tempted to buy a EOS-R because it;s cheaper now, but nah. It's so lame in it;s feature set. It's fun to tout it;s limitations as a way to improve your artistry, but that's just making excuses for a lame product. I think Cripple Canon must have done a lot of sweet deals with all the top influencers. Still not buying it...
I know.. lot of features.. but look at the sensor performance difference only.. that's the main difference which can obscure most video pros of the G9 expecially on low light. Eos R is very video limited where the G9 is autofocus (CDAF) and sensor performance limited in comparison (expecially after last Eos R firmwares). I love the G9 and to me it's the best all around m43 camera ever at a fair price, but the sensor has it limits sadly, speaking expecially on stills.. can't shoot every time seconds of exposure handheld because of ibis support on the G9, sometimes you need fast shutter speed, you raise the iso and here's come the huge difference in noise and DR.
So that means 8 bit 420 100mbps is 2014 then cause that is shitty quality for a real professional work , even the Panasonic has 480mbps. For video why get the a7 when Panasonic beats it
As Always Interesting content. I want to confirm If You can Reply At 5:08 in this video You said that you can combat that by putting EFS Lens. Meaning here that if EFS lens put on crop sensor then-No crop factor. Means If We put on EFS 18 - 135mm on Canon 80D(crop sensor) then There will be no cropping. Efs 18mm on crop body will give exactly the same view as a Ef lens on full-frame sensor body.
Peter, I don't know whether to curse you or bless you. I just upgraded from the Canon 20D to the Canon EOS R. I realize the more experience photographers my not like the R but I LOVE it!! Its interface is intuitive, the versatility is light years beyond what I had (I know, duh), the weight makes it easier for me to take it with me anywhere. Not to mention the ability to program the multifunction buttons so it feels like I have a camera made just for me. Thank you for this review. It helped me make the jump.
Custom function ring on the lens? Some years ago, Samsung NX line. Which reminds me NX1 with 120fps 1080p and 6,5K full sensor readout down-sampled to 4K. A 4 years old camera from a retired company... Vari-ND adapter? Some years ago, many OEM brands for many mounts. Nothing new here then. No revolution. I'm not a Sony user, but they did the "revolution"...a few years ago.
Much love but come on man. Clearly your relationship with Canon muddies the waters here. “With the battery grip, the EosR is nearly the same size as the 1dx” Moments later: “This camera has really helped me minimize my setup.” Kinda of a contradiction. How can you turn NOT having 120fps into a selling point because it challenges you!?? The crop factor isn’t an issue to you at all tho. Much love man, hope to see a better FFML from Canon in the future.
KurtBob so true on the 120fs selling point. That’s when I got insulted. Complete insult to our intelligence. Makes feel like he thinks now, “sure, I can sell that to them, they’ll believe me” And I liked him, BUT the more his follows grew, so did my disappointment
KurtBob Are you serious? It's nowhere near the size of the 1DXii even with the battery grip. We haven't all got 11yr old girl's hands and some of us prefer a proper adult-sized grip.
Rita D I didn't get the impression he was selling anyone anything. He didn't 'recommend' the camera, he said he might try it as a challenge to push he skills further. These cameras which do everything for you not only take away some of the skill, but also the satisfaction of achievement out of photography.
Great video as always Peter. I am overall excited for the new EOS R. The main issue I have with it is the crop on the 4k and the lack of 120fps. Thanks for the giveaway!
@@사라-t9g it's so much better than canon. The only thing I miss about canon is the quick controls, it's gonna take a while to get used to how to adjust the settings.
You could set up the Video C3 Settings, which u can use in Photo Mode for Video taking. No need to switch to Video Mode. Just press the Red Record button, than instant Video Recording. If u press the Mode button, on the bottom there is this info line where it is stated. So no delay in taking a Video while Shooting Pics ;)
In 2015 a camera came out that gave you 120 at 1080p with sound. 4K DC at 24p + UHD at well over an hour of continuous filming, 6K down-sampled to 4K, H.265, 15.2 frames/second, video details to die for, hybrid contrast/phase-detect, one of the best in colour science, ergonomically perfect, full and gorgeous touch screen, etc etc etc. Am I glad I still rejoice in it? Sure thing. It took that long for the rest to catch up. Guess...
Seriously Peter ? you love 120fps but you like the slower frame rate of the EOS R lol what happened to you man ? this camera is 5 years behind the competition, and you are praising it like it is the first mirrorless camera in the world. It doesn't do almost anything as good as everyone else!
Exactly, such a lazy attempt by canon to release a sub par product in the mirror less world. He’s making excuses and sounds so fake about them, definitely no one should trust this video.
The problem is they get the cameras for free and before anyone else. That by itself creates a bias. The nice reviews encourages the camera manufactures to keep doing that for free marketing and in return they get views. Feature set is ok.... not worth the money. And the smarter consumer will watch this, and look at what else is out there and still but what will work for them. More so..the S1 and SR1, Sony a7III
Excellent, I'm as hyped as you are about the new EOS R, and you have one and I don't (yet) because it doesn't hit the streets until next week... Until then, we can read the manual (available online) and watch all the many videos on this great new turn of events in the photo world. Thanks for the input.
@@leecason9468 Too bulky of a setup, and noone wants to bother with adapters and the possible tiny AF hiccups those can bring. Besides, he has an alright relationship going with Canon
Why sony fanboys feel like the a7 iii or a7riii is the most perfect and flawless camera out there when its not , btw there is no perfect camera out there bro.
funny to see that every vlogger is hugely impressed with each new camera canon or sony brings out. at the same time, the time of release, telling the same keypoints and story. makes you wonder how much money they earn. let me say this, canon eas R doesnt have IBIS, all its competitors do have this.the nikon Z6 is much more of a camera than the EOS R.
THANKS YOU FOR 2.5 MILLION SUBS!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!!! Be sure to check out that give-away! YA MIGHT JUST WIN IT!
I need that
Your awesome peter just keep it up people Will like it!
Keep up the good work 👍
I'm gonna try it on Photokina on thursday! Congrats btw dude! :)
Pure BS. We all know the video was bought and paid for by Canon
"ive decided to stay with my 1dxm2" (after canon makes a few hundred thousand thanks to this video)...and...he didnt bring up lack of 4k 60p
Yea I was wondering that too...A lack of 120fps is a good thing huh?? So buy a new camera that has 60fps instead of just slowing down to 60fps if you want smh. Was very disappointed in this Peter keep it real.
For real lol
lol yeah the 1dx has 4K 60p so like wtf
Half Truths: Canon intentionally limits you in ways that are inexcusable IMHO.
- Selling you a full frame camera and then NOT allowing full frame 4k
- not going 1080 120FPS
- not stabilizing the sensor
Sony & Panasonic both offer these basics.
what they lack is the Canon color and the Dual Pixel AF.
Yeah.. you are right... or Nikon also offers amazing posibilities

If people want a crop sensor camera then they'd buy one with appropriate lenses on the market to fit that crop (ie. the GH5).
Red and Arri are “cropped” comparatively, super 35. That’s not a big deal as people seem to make it out to be.
I'm sure that's Canon's line he's toeing.
But I come HERE FOR the 120p B-roll.
Omar Gonzalez Photography he will continue don’t worry he just do the promotion of that camera for Canon 😉
Omar .... I watch your channel for your fun style of presentation ... Great work.

I tried switching to the R after shooting a 5D3 for years... size, touchscreen, and swivel screen are very cool, but I agree that it does feel a little slower. Still has that beautiful Canon look though!
Canon look of the photos or the camera body?
@@__Mr.White__maybe both😂
What I like about your video is the fact you are always enthusiastic about your topics.
It is the person behind the camera
Great video as always
While I absolutely would never switch from the 1dxii to the EOS R, Peter could film a great project with a ham sandwich. And that’s what the EOS R is, a ham sandwich.
That’s the most reasonable comment I’ve read today.
SwitchRich and when you bite into it, the small piece of center ham is not tender enough to separate so it pulls all of the ham into that one bite. Leaving you with only dry bread and a smatter of mayonnaise.
Ramon Solorio or you go for the stuff made in China that falls apart on one drop.
David Ramos, you keep trolling every comment that is against Canon R with this BS argument even though almost nobody talks about Sony here...
Notice i did not mention Sony, you did.
you KNOW I've been waiting for this. ok brb watching now.
Aaaand how do you switch modes so fast?? 🤔

MariNate What? Since when did the M50 have a 30.3MP FF sensor?

Im a Canon user for 10 years due to various reasons (I like it, changing brands isnt cost effective, Im not rich... you name it.). But if someone like him still sticks to a single brand while other brands have been killing it, especially with video. There is only one logical conclusion: Hes paid handsomely to do exactly that.
LOL looks like the same Canon commercial I just saw from Devin Graham on the EOS R....

I love your admission that moving to a system that instills a few limitations has the potential to improve who you are as an artist.

No more phat silky smooth buttery sweet delicious drizzled 120p?
Cheers on the storytelling aspect, looking forward to the new b-roll segments 👌🏻
Lol. This man could sell ice to an Eskimo.
Can't be mad at you. You have to maintain your business relationships.
MadBad Voodoo and how does the A9 compare on price? Not really the same target market segment, one feels.
Lincoln Riddle and the m50 is way cheaper and does the same with a smaller sensor.
Lincoln Riddle I feel the exact same way 🤦🏻♂️😂
Hell, other than the ff vs aps-c bit, the Fuji X-T3 destroys this camera.
Peace :)
Kunal Tewari or the m50
1DX II is out since May 16 so its a big lie, that he has 5 years user experience on it

Melker Larsson I didn’t have the t2. But by all accounts, features-wise, it’s wayyy better. But if you have a t2 already, maybe not worth an upgrade. I absolutely loveee my t3 already though. Steep learning curve, but it feels amazing. My dream camera
Chanunnaki Ok thanks! Do you use it most for photography or filmmaking?
Get the Fujifilm X-T3. Be aware though, Fuji will not pay you as much as Canon does.
4K 60FPS, 1080p 120FPS, F-LOG yeaaa
I just heard most people hate fuji when it comes to video. Not sure why.
older fuji cameras simply doesn't even compete in the video department. The X-T1 a few generations back for example has horrid false color and moire, The sony A7 from around the same time smokes it out of the water, at least as far as video is concerned. Though the last and this generation improves things immensely, they still haven't shake the "don't take a video on a fuji" image yet.
will his EF L lenses work on the Fuji? No.
@@acalthu Yes, actually, with an adaptor. Just like you need an adaptor for EF lenses with the EOS R
I'm sorry but it does seem a bit like you are making excuses for yourself to make up for the cameras clear faults. I've been there man.
P.S. I own a Nikon d5100 from 2011 and I can't afford a new camera, but when I'll make the upgrade it will probably be a Canon DLSR
the m50 does the same shit for only 700

No 120fps is a real shame. Can't think as to why they wouldn't include it here.. they must know it is a major selling point for Sony's mirrorless range. In face, it is what has been tempting me to switch to Sony for a while. When this was revealed I was over the moon to think finally Canon were releasing a mirrorless camera that could shoot at 120fps and I could not even think about going to Sony - I was shocked at finding out it isn't there.

I just can't get excited about this camera. I do love my Sony A7 III but I do like to still get excited for other gear. Why does Canon refuse to let their full-frame cameras shoot full 4K without cropping? Also, one SD card slot? Also, 720p for 120fps!?
Yeah, my iPhone6 shoots 720p at 240fps lol!
Who says the commenters didn’t delete the comments themselves? The same way you edited your original comment. Just saying.
Mauricio Fernandez yes and he knows that the Canon camera is reliable. Unfortunately many of the other brands are not.
YT is weird - this was highlighted for me today, and it's from September 2018. Your videos are always fun to watch.
It seems that a lot of people just discovered that Peter was getting Canon paid. Got to love humanity
Zak Viemon just discovered? He’s been at one of their headquarters in a video a month or more ago. He’s definitely being paid, but people are blind sheep 🐑 that believe anything these guys say.
He's not being paid, he's just a fanboy. I mean look at how he talks about the 1.4/24mm
@@ChrisThe1 I fear he is the much worse. A paid fanboy. This new hubrid of vlogographers that guides people to buy shit
@Zak Viemon it's kind of sad what youtube has become nowadays. Nothing genuine
LET's GO ! :D
I just got the Panasonic G9 which is just amazing ! :D
(well yeah, this Canon EOS R can full frame )
Do you sell Canon cameras? because that's how you sell Canon cameras!
Robin Wiman If anyone praises canon than he's a seller. But praising Sony is always natural and acceptable.
My son recommended this camera. Looking for reviews. You showed things no one else has. Love your energy.
Oh s*** thatt camera shrink was fantastic!! 😂😂
How
Nope. Gh5 + all Leica "Panasonic" Lenses are still my absolute favorite in terms of capabilites. Sensor size is not the most important thing 😊 Gh5 already had Vlog 10 bit 4:2:2 All Intra one year ago. That people even talk about the EOS R is crazy 😂
florianreichelt and don’t forget the m50.
@@msandersen you are right we shouldn't begrudge each other and personally I guess it is good that there is a large variety of cameras 😊 just wanted to recommend my favorite for others 😊
to each and each, but my GH5 is my favorite as well!
Good luck winning that camera, everyone!
Wholesome comment
Awesome video!! You have basically made my decision for me, just purchased the EOS R and am extremely excited to get it.
Yea.. 120fps in at least 1080p is what I am missing, that it only has 720p and with no autofocus is really sad.
The price though.. (i 3 i) it's even more than a Sony A7iii with IBIS. Not that I can afford either anyway.
PETER THAT MINI 1DX II WAS SO COOL!!!! WHERE'D YOU GET IT?
Best mirror camera from 2016... In 2018... And a crop of 1,8 in 4k... One SD socket... I thought in change but I don't like the specs by the price
Arnau Rectoret over priced oudated crap. A7iii for $300 less.
Did you see the prices of the lenses or the EOS R? Ultra crazy. Hasselblad price lvl
So that means 8 bit 420 100mbps is 2014 then cause that is shitty quality for a real professional work , even the Panasonic has 480mbps. For video why get the a7 when Panasonic beats it
@@ArnauRectoret Hasselblad level price? ROTFLMFAO you are a moron
Peter, do a follow up video.
I've been happy with the move to the EOS R too!
Maybe now people will stop calling high frame rates “cinematic”. It isn’t.
24fps >>>
Custom function ring on the lens? Some years ago, Samsung NX line. Which reminds me NX1 with 120fps 1080p and 6,5K full sensor readout down-sampled to 4K. A 4 years old camera from a retired company...
Vari-ND adapter? Some years ago, many OEM brands for many mounts.
Nothing new here then. No revolution. I'm not a Sony user, but they did the "revolution"...a few years ago.
@Saleucami They don't make cameras anymore. NX system is discontinued from 2015.
Its still my A Camera despite using Red and C200
karacop78 Boohoo, Peter complimented Canon. Get over it.
Everytime i watch your videos i get so motivated to go out and take some photos! You always know how to get people pumped! Love your videos
What camera and lens were used to film this video? Really high quality.
Much love but come on man. Clearly your relationship with Canon muddies the waters here.
“With the battery grip, the EosR is nearly the same size as the 1dx”
Moments later:
“This camera has really helped me minimize my setup.”
Kinda of a contradiction.
Makes feel like he thinks now, “sure, I can sell that to them, they’ll believe me”
And I liked him, BUT the more his follows grew, so did my disappointment
THank you for putting in the time to teach us and take us on your journey.
"It's good because it's challenging me" 😂
You should then just use an old camcorder from your dad.
Ps. It looks Retro without grading or editing!
A Peter McKinnon review is not just a normal review. PM-EFFEKT 🔥 always love watching stuff i can't afford 😂
Switched to Sony a few months back and I haven't regretted it since :)
This makes me feel good cause I’m purchasing an a7iii
@@사라-t9g it's so much better than canon. The only thing I miss about canon is the quick controls, it's gonna take a while to get used to how to adjust the settings.
You could set up the Video C3 Settings, which u can use in Photo Mode for Video taking. No need to switch to Video Mode. Just press the Red Record button, than instant Video Recording. If u press the Mode button, on the bottom there is this info line where it is stated. So no delay in taking a Video while Shooting Pics ;)
canon should make the adapter with the variable ND filter in it for their regular EF cameras
So many new cameras to choose from! Oh the wife is going to kill me...😜
On Ouchs so many great camera except this one, overpriced outdated tech eos r
Yup, Canons DPAF is best in the business, and coupled with the flipout screen, makes this the EOSR the best vblogging camera on the market atm.
Yeah have fun with that 1.8x crop in video mode. You’ll never have shallow depth of field again lol.
It doesn't do almost anything as good as everyone else!
supernova1976 Canon. Other competition? No one cares about the others. Who gives a shit. Canon !!!!! Loyalty
Exactly, such a lazy attempt by canon to release a sub par product in the mirror less world. He’s making excuses and sounds so fake about them, definitely no one should trust this video.
right even my g85 is as good and its 2 years old and under a 1k
The problem is they get the cameras for free and before anyone else. That by itself creates a bias. The nice reviews encourages the camera manufactures to keep doing that for free marketing and in return they get views. Feature set is ok.... not worth the money. And the smarter consumer will watch this, and look at what else is out there and still but what will work for them. More so..the S1 and SR1, Sony a7III
No other mirrorless has a 36mm sensor, nor 30mp quality at this price point.
Peter...the rolling shutter.... you didnt see it? Really? Come on bro....
Wow, that's a huge deal
He’s not paid to see it.
how do I avoid the rolling shutter?
Wouldn't mind seeing you try a sony camera.
I tried a sony once it had a small disc in it to record to . . . that was enough for me
@@casamayer I know which one your talking about and yeah their much better now.
pete's video never bores me...he's just awesome and i like the way he beatbox...he's such an entertaining guy...love you Pete..
I dont know why but i really want that minature 1dx mk2 just to joke that i have an 8000$ camera
8 months of vacation late to watch this video =[
now 3.6m subs thats awesome!
Ahh I wish I could. I'm still using G7X mark ii haha
Same man. Same....
I hate the microphone on it. So many issues. But great Vlogging camera
no you don't. Peter is talking shit, the EOS R is literally the same of the M50.
MariNate Not hardly. The sensor is far better
Excellent, I'm as hyped as you are about the new EOS R, and you have one and I don't (yet) because it doesn't hit the streets until next week... Until then, we can read the manual (available online) and watch all the many videos on this great new turn of events in the photo world. Thanks for the input.
4k crop and low battery life 🤦♂️
1.5x crop on a a7r3 in high quality, non scaling mode, so, yawn, nothing to see here.
no one uses full frame 4K with Sony.
Sony, fuji fan boy?
no there is no crop on the a7r3 in 25fps 100mb high quality mode.
This Is Sony a7iii or a9 have no crop in 4k full frame. And are great fottage (downsample from 6k acquisition).
Have you tried the Sony A7iii
no flippyscreen, and he prefers canon and EF lenses
@@timothylevi small he monitor on the A7iii is still lighter than a one dx and ef lenses can go on Sony and work well with adaptors.
@@leecason9468 Too bulky of a setup, and noone wants to bother with adapters and the possible tiny AF hiccups those can bring. Besides, he has an alright relationship going with Canon
And not to mention the 2 sd slots on the Sony vs the canons 1 and the Sony has the 4K non crop , and 120p at 1080p
Congrats Sir and keep crushing the shots!
