For a long time i used to think that you are a canon hater but today you proved how journalism should be done and how a product should be reviewed, you were not shy in admitting the good things about the camera and were very vocal about the things that canon did wrong in this camera . Nowadays every other reviewer seems so ungrateful and unexcited about new things any company releases as if it is no big deal and some on the other hand stick to a brand and just keep on justifying and defending whatever the company does. Thank you so much jared you did an amazing job.
Funny thing is, if you watch their other videos, they often talk about using a pretty wide variety of camera brands on set. Some Canons for video, Sony stuff, Nikon stuff.
Kandush Actually, another type of person sticks to a brand which has never let them down over decades of shooting, feels great in the hand and offers all that person needs. We do actually want some skill to come into the equation. If cameras end up getting every single shot perfectly exposed with little effort from the photographer, every single shot perfectly focused with little effort from the photographer and captures 120fps, so timing no longer matters, etc. then who would ever hire a professional photographer? It would mark the end of a profession other than in some highly specialised areas. I love the challenge of getting a perfect exposure in tricky lighting with no preview of the image before capturing it. Same with focus, especially of moving subjects. Aren't these the things which make photography fun and a challenge? We're heading towards a world of boring photography where skills hardly matter.
cooloox - As much as I want to refute what you are saying I really can't, at least not how cameras are making it almost too easy. I think cost is still a pretty big barrier, you aren't going to see people dropping 5-7K on a body and a few lenses jsut to avoid hiring a pro to take their photos. I also think that the actual knowledge of what makes a photo great eclipses the bells and whistles that make it easier to get that shot. But, the easier that is, the higher the bar becomes to make a great photo. If anything, it might make it more competitive, but in a tedious way. A way that isn't fun. It's like HDR, once that got easier to do everyone did it. Now, there are tons of garbage HDR shooters out there and almost every camera has it built in, even cell phones. But there are still some really good shots too, ones that couldn't be done without it, and it was more the knowledge of composition that made the shots I like what they are rather than the HDR mode.
+cooloox Ditto! The exact same thing I was thinking while looking through a camera’s myriad of var. functions, adjustments, improvements, compensations and other life-simplifying "thingies", aka "features". Indeed, with these mirrorless "robots", the art of capturing beautiful imagery has turned into a flawless, sterile and impersonal "documenting" of the world around us. I often see photos by other photographers where everything is in perfect flawless sharpness, with even exposures and standard processing, looking like 10 million other cliche postcard-like banal "creations", that leave me bored and missing good ol’ times…. During those moments I miss the grittiness and nostalgic raw look of B&W shots of yesteryear, that inspire and propel me to process my photos accordingly.... Just like some article of clothing on an almost nude model, something needs to be left to the imagination, and, similarly, the exaggerated & processed artificial sterility often isn't what moves one's soul. Not every MWC (a man with a camera) IS a photographer. With the endless proliferation of more complex and feature-rich cameras, the photo world is over-saturated with all sorts of unthinkable subjects that camera swinging individuals rush to capture. Sadly, not all of them are true artists and masters of their craft and often rely on the latest gizmo in place of a real talent. Their results could be observed in millions on sites like Flickr, where they pour their "perfectly steril" shots in hopes someone acknowledges their "creative efforts". Similar to algorithms/presets-equipped robots, capable of composing only robotic-sounding music, or an auto-tune employed to correct /compensate for human shortcomings - they all make their “final creations” sounding dull, empty, void of life, generic and without a soul, that would otherwise touch the listener. …Correcting preemptively photographer’s lack of skills has the exact same results: photos that don’t move you and leave you indifferent…….
Jared, been watching you forever. I really loved your review, better than a lot out there. I felt your were 100% honest, no bias, and just hit the points dead on, and accurate too. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that this isn't the camera for me, but the 2nd version of this camera you can be sure is going to be so much better, and Canon is watching and listening to all the comments in video reviews to make things better. Awesome review Jared ! Thanks ! I watched it all from the beginning to end. Mark over at the recipe channel. Chag Sameach !
I really love your real world reviews. So many people butch about this camera(or any camera) without even getting their hands on the camera at all, just by looking at he specs sheet. Keep up the great work and thanks for the awesome job!
Jared, thank you very much for this excellent review. I appreciate that you looked at the EOS R as objectively as possible. Your preview-review has caused me to seriously consider this camera as I am pitting it against the Sony A7III. Its feasibility would greatly increase if the firmware update allows Eye-AF continuous as well as Silent continuous shooting. Hopefully they also either include exposure Zebras or fix the disappearing Histogram when shooting video. BTW, I am more disappointed that Canon excluded IBIS and full-HD 120fps than the one card slot. I would really like to know the following: 1. Its performance in low-light indoor shooting. I saw the few shots you did, but the noise appeared a little higher than I would like, especially when compared to the A7III. 2. The highest usable ISO 3. Success of Smart Phone connection for GPS tagging 4. How does focus-by-wire actually perform/feel for both photo and video. 5. Performance of EF-S gold band lenses like the 17-55 f/2.8, 10-22, 70-300. 6. What is the Megapixel value when shooting with EF-S lenses? 7. How does the Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art EF mount (or other popular Sigma lenses) perform? 8. Are CircPol & ND filter lens adapters weather sealed? Thanks in advance.
Anthony Hall I'm not sure if you're right regarding high ISO noise compared to the A73. High ISO can only truly be compared with the cameras side-by-side capturing the same subject in the same light. Otherwise, comparisons are meaningless. Why do I say this? Because I have shot images with a lowly aps-c sensored Canon 80D at ISO 16000 which were so clean I was amazed. I have an 8" x 12" print from a hand-held shot of a small child standing in the aisle of a cathedral with no visible noise unless you hold the print 4" from your nose. It looks like an ISO 800 print. But! I can also show you images shot at ISO 6400, so grainy that they're only fit for the trash can. ISO is extremely inconsistent in quality on all cameras when you start varying the ambient conditions. Ambient lighting conditions hugely affect ISO performance. There was a video preview of the A73 launch event where I kept wowing over the cleanliness of the high ISO shots being taken in low light UNTIL the reviewer showed one of the shots at ISO 6400 at 100%. It was an unusable mess and surprisingly noisy for a FF camera. I've seen some beautiful clean images at the same ISO from the same model of camera too. If you have access to an A73 then replicate one of Jared's shots: a person in a dark room, only lit by the screen of a laptop. Oh, and remember to shoot at ISO 10000. It would be interesting to compare. Also keep in mind you can downscale the 30MP image to 24MP and you'll instantly reduce the grain size (noise) by 20%.
@cooloox thank you very much for the thorough response. I appreciate your your experience and am glad you shared it with us. A lot of the photos I take are indoor events and the low light performance is important. I understand from the reviews that the EOS R focuses well in low light, but I just wanted clarification of its final image especially compared to the A7III because I am going to buy one of the two. I would prefer the the Canon because I'm already invested in Canon gear, but I'm not adverse to jumping ship if need be. Thanks again.
All cameras now adays are good what people need to focus on is what's good for you whether that's ergonomics, specs, familiarity etc. Do what's right for you and your photography!
No that kind of mentality will stifle progress, it is good but if you allow yourself to give every camera the benefit of the doubt then the camera companies will take advantage, it's sad but true
I was just saying we shouldn't be bringing cameras down and saying they are all out bad cameras... I shot nikon and switched to sony (80%) so I can do more video work. But that doesn't mean nikon cameras are bad just means there are differences and to see nikon had made improvements with video makes me want to switch back to nikon for the ergonomics that my sony doesn't have.
Wow... a real hands on with real objectivity and no pandering to any faction... Kudos Jared! Yours are the best hands on and real world review I can find! Cheers
The shutter covering the sensor is an interesting [and welcomed] improvement for mirrorless. I hope the other companies adapt this. I pick up dirt every lens change.
No sure what I believe but the sony view is that the sensor is covered by strong glass, whereas the shutter is quite delicate. Yes it means that need to clean the sensor occasionally but that's pretty easy and much safer than having an exposed shutter. An automatic cover could be the ideal answer.
A+ hands down best review of this camera posted! Holy cow did you ever check all the boxes on the important points. I dig that filter set up. And I had no trouble taking that model on the beach myself! Great job! Loved the menu views!
well I thought 22 min of video for a review was way too long but it's simply perfect!! good pace and it felt like you did not leave anything out! thanks for the review!
The shutter covering the sensor when switching lenses is a GREAT feature, and one I want to see all the camera companies doing for mirrorless cameras in the future. Those shots of the model running on the beach looked really good too.
@@mneedes2 mmmmmmmhm, I'm not sure why everyone is so intent on being "pro", it's the same way I feel when I hear " military grade" as if that's something to brag about. The crap they give you in the military has been rode hard and put up wet
Not true. I ask my friends to take pics of me with my iPhone 7 and I look ugly af then I give them my 35mm film camera and I look like a fucken model bro so camera matters tired of all this bullshit lies. If cameras didn’t matter why tf they so expensive? explain that BITCH
@@suavecito6114 Here's a good explanation: Your friend and YOU haven't learned what makes a good photograph. It's not just a good camera or sharp lens that makes a good photograph. Cue, watch any episode of pro photographer, bad camera from the old digitalrev tv channel. You're probably just stuck in that pro cameras can make a good bokeh photo. But guess what? All that hides is what a good composition can be done and incorporating a background to it. A good camera can hide that you can't properly expose your shots because of its good ISO performance. Guess what? A very good lit subject and overall photo trumps any good camera even if you have an old crop sensor camera. Those flashes, reflectors, beauty dishes etc. are being used by pros for a reason. A pro camera can give an outstanding color depth. But did you know someone who edits their photos and can properly adjust HSL alongside giving the photo good temperature, tint, grading or even split toning. I've seen people with old canon crop cameras like t3i do better than me at edits not only from good coloring but also outstanding posing of the model. And oh you probably didn't even know about posing either. Let alone have your own style aside from letting the camera do it for you.
As a long time mirrorless shooter, the closed shutter feature when changing lenses is GREAT. I wish this feature came out earlier because it is a major problem when swapping lenses in field.
Hi Jared. A very helpful review. I have viewed a few of your reviews and they have been helpful. I love that you fly through the info and make it effective to listen and watch.
Aside from that color shift that Stephen faced in super impressed! (Then again I'm someone who never gets out of AWB) Thanks a million for this video guys! M so happy!!
I own 5D4, i found the traditional way of using the Dials to position the AF point much faster than the joy stick. You will need practice of cause. The reason is, joy stick move one stop on every click. Fine when using old camera with few AF point to select from. When you have thousands of AF point, it is slow. In contrary, the dials allow you to scroll through the points at much faster speed. I have not tried EOS-R, but with 5D4, you can do that.
Hey Jared, thank you very much for the very balance first overview and use of the Canon R and Lenses. Truly appreciate your unbias and very balance reviews, that what we as customers are looking for, as Sgt. Friday in Dragnet use to say "Just the facts Ma'am, just the facts". Will be looking forward to your future full review of the Canon R, Thank You!
the quickest and simplest way to move focusing points in the frame are with COMMAND DIALS. Main dial moves the focusing point/s left & right; secondary dial moves them up and down. the effect is the same as if you were using a joystick.
This is the first of your videos I've watched. I then checked a couple of others. I like the style and you seem to be pretty straight up. No forced narrative.
I think this just moved to the top of my list, as a possible upgrade. I would wait 6 months or so to make sure there are no late showing problems. Great review! :)
By the way, when the winds blow on the beach, salt spray is also in the air. That turns close-tolerance-machinery into a rusted, locked up state over (a very short) time. Most local photographers either get a longer range zoom lens or multiple camera bodies to side step this salty problem. If that option is available, it's "sneaker/feet zoom time," whereby one moves hither or yon as required. Otherwise, it's nice to know about the shortcomings of The Next Big Thing as I trundle along with "trailing edge technology" that I can afford. Also, I'm a STILL photographer who appreciates Image Stabilization, when available.
You did a much better job in selling me this camera than Canon did. As a Canon shooter I was wondering why I should be excited about this system but you made some great comparisons with the slrs.
I've seen a lot of your videos, but this one was really, really good. Very in-depth and the cutaways to the camera to show the layout of the camera were top notch. Excellent!
This video looks so crispy love the color grading and everything about the quality, camera seems like it's built like a tank, camera looks professional not cheap, menu seems to be easy to navigate, Canon seems to have don't a great job for their first full frame, there seems to be a lot of help innovation in this line up to come. Love that Canon log wishes it wasn't such a small crop but adapting S line lenses should work fine I'm hoping, but I don't shoot much video anyway mostly stills. As a stills photographer I can't wait to test this camera out especially the auto focus
Thank you for an honest review of the pros and cons of this camera. I'm so fed up of seeing people that have clearly switched from Nikon/Canon to Sony, just going on every video for the Nikon Z and Canon R and just desperately searching for any reason to bash these cameras and justify their decision. Is the Sony AIII better at the moment? Yes. Are the Canon and Nikon FF mirrorless cameras bad? Absolutely not! And it took Sony some years and many generations to get it right. In a few generations down the line, I'm sure the Nikon and Canon FF mirrorless cameras will be something pretty special.
Mirrorless lenses prices will finally drop. As a Sony shooter, I think Canon really made a really good camera. Thanks Jared, your video is good as always. Cheers from Mexico.
Gonna be honest, I'm pretty excited about this camera. Have wanted to upgrade from my 6D for a while. The AF performance looks great, and I'm particularly excited about that filter EF lens adapter. Early results look promising, I think Canon will have a winner on their hands.
I appreciate the video. I love the effort because I don't have the ability to go do this review. One statement that I think was a bit misleading was, "if you can't get shot in one shot, then you prob. shouldn't be shooting at all. " I think he was trying to say, "If you can't get the shot without relying on 'spray and pray' then you need to work on timing and frame accuracy". Cameras with high fps in stills are usually never maxed out in one moment by a pro. It is the small delay between frames actuating that is the benefit. I usually only need 2-3 frames for most moments shooting at a rate of 7-8fps. I'm sure Jared doesn't need many frames to master the moment either, he just explained it weird here. Also beginners may get discouraged too.. Any way thumbs up. Keep up the good work Fro.
The quality and production value of this video is amazing. I wish you could track the people who gave this a thumbs down so I could see what kind of free videos they are offering. Great job Fro Crew (even Todd :)
Your great real world first look completely confirm my thoughts when it was announced, and what my experiences in real life are with my 6DM2. Not so great on paper - but excellent in real-life. I’m seriously considering trading up to this! Thanks!
Also note that the touch bar, by nature of having no moving parts, does not make noise when you use it. So anyone shooting video with an on-camera mic will want to use the touch bar exclusively while shooting. Ironically Canon already had this type of function on their rear control wheel on high end SLR's, so this isn't really a "new" feature for shooting Video on Canon, but it's good that they have it even without the classic wagon wheel control dial. (I kind of wish the EOS R still had the big old control dial instead of a Dpad).
You really cram a LOT of info into these reviews - great job. Canon did very well for the first model, but the second generation should be killer. BTW, all mirrorless camera/lens systems should feature stepless apertures, IMO.
Not really, as someone who has a 6dii, I definitely won't get this camera. It's almost double the price of the 6dii, no ibis, lenses are crazy expensive and to actually use any of the new functions like drop in filters or adapt ef lenses, I still have to dish out yet another $1-400. No thnx I'll keep my 6dii.
As a 6d owner, I see this as a great upgrade. It's what the 6dii should have been. I want a better sensor, more FPS, tilty flippy screen and better auto focus. The R checks all those boxes. It's closer to the 5dIV for a grand less.
This is why I've been waiting it out and not switching to Sony. I have a ton invested in Canon glass and Love my Lenses. Canon Glass is one of the reasons I started shooting with canon, to begin with. I'm really happy to see that Canon brought out the EF adapters at the launch of the camera, knowing that most of us will be adapting our current lenses. The few shortcomings of this camera aka the eye AF, the Cropped 4K and the single shot Silent shutter, don't really affect me that much. The good news is I suspect most of those issues can be fixed with a firmware update. I'm pleasantly surprised and am eager to see the next level 5D version of their Mirrorless cameras. hopefully if has a higher FPS.
To be honest I was very disappointed with the base specs like everyone else. I thought this camera wouldn't go anywhere and Canon had dropped the ball. However, after your overview I have some hope. Maybe we don't look at this camera as the Sony competitor but as Canons first steps into intermediate/professional mirror-less cameras. Fingers crossed in a couple years they get caught up and we have more choices for great, new, high-tech cameras on equal playing fields.
A thing many forget is that Canon launched a mount first, not a camera. The fact that it started something new, with good lenses at launch and the ability to mount any EF or EF-S lens is what this is all about, as in not much time we'll have a higher end body, and not long after that a successor to this one, and so on. Mount, lenses, ecosystem is what it's all about, not that this camera isn't beating the A7 line-up.
Hi Jared, for the no black-out part - Canon basically freeze the image you just took in your EVF, it's not the "no black out" on a9, a9 keeps refreshing and tracking the subject while you are shooting, which requires a much higher sensor readout speed and processing power. Canon really play a smart move here, when other mirrorless maker add black images in between the shots to indicate you are not seeing the things in real time, Canon just cheated and freeze and pretend it's "no black out".
I'm really conflicted between the Canon EOS R and Sony A7 III now since both will fulfil my needs but the Canon is more likely to work better with my lenses since it's a native adaptor and I'm used to Canon but the Sony is just so much better in several areas and is overall amazing. I'm mainly just a photo shooter so I'm not sure. Being conflicted is hard.
Canon has the advantage of having a much wider mount than sony. so you'll be able to get lenses like the 28-70 and f1.2 and faster primes. Plus there are way more lenses for canon that you can rent and use to expand your creativity like tilt shift's, macro tilt shifts ( yes canon make these amazing things), fisheye zoom, microscope lenses (Mp-e 65) all these lenses are the reason i got Canon to begin with. It's more about the lenses than the camera. but even more than that, it's the photographer, so the more types of lenses the more creative possibilities.
Go sony, they are already ahead and will stay in front for the next 5 to 10 years minimum while canon fanboy will find any excuse to justify canon bad spec like its their first mirrorless ... I mean canon is in the photo buisness since a pretty long time ... no IBIS ... its a joke. On my end im selling my canon DSLR FF stuff and will go APSC Fuji, I had hope for that canon mirrorless but now its all gone.
was in the same boat. goin from a 6d with a good amount of L glass. I saw the R rumors 2 days ahead of announcement, and on a whim bought an A7 III and Sigma adapter (local place was out of metabones). devoted 24 hours to setup, learn, and test. I'm 99% Satisfied... EVF could be better, besides that, I'm happy with my purchase. who knows if I'll stick with Sony long term, (5-10 years). but for the next 2-4, I'd make the same A7iii switch.
This camera has a lot of good features. The adapter choices look outstanding! The flip screen is also great not only for vlogging, but for shooting very low-angle macros or landscapes, or holding overhead in a crowd. But with the crippled CF mode (no high-speed CF, no silent shooting in CF), it's no good for nature photos. Tony C echoes the single card slot as a deal-breaker for him as a working pro. If I didn't already have a 5DM4 and 7DM2, I'd still seriously consider it. I hope the next iteration addresses the issues (and adds IBIS). Then, I'll likely sell the 7DM2 and upgrade to the R2, or whatever they call it, as an add-on to the 5DM4.
wow the best preview to date man. Miles better then the others. It even made front page on canon rumors. I am glad you added the clip of the eos r taking video while walking, and then show the clip with the sony IBIS system for a good reference for the video shooters(Its a great example of how that tech works). I would love to get this camera (I have some ef glass), but I do need the fps for indoor sports photography (my circa 2009 7d is not cutting it, especially in the noise department with 2.8 glass). Will wait for the other eos r cameras to come out. Or get the EOS R now and make it work, I was doing it with a 350d when i first started, I am sure I can get this to work.
I don't think DSLR's will be dead in 3 years. The mirrorless cameras from Nikon and Canon are just too expensive at this point to replace DSLR's (which you can pick up for around $500 new on sale during holidays). For pros, the mirrorless will have all the brand new R&D, and I'm happy to pick up an EOS R as a B-Roll camera to the C200B. The biggest two complaints are crop 4K and single card slot, but they don't bother me as I'm used to Super35mm and even the C200B has one CFast2.0 slot. By the way, I also have a pair of A7III's for low light video or Run 'n Gun filmmaking, and I'm happy to include the new Canon EOS R in the kit. Was thinking about the 5DIV, but the IV is $1000 more when you include cLOG.
A firmware update which adds eye AF and silent shooting in continuous mode, as well as additional touch bar functions and some bug fixes, is announced on Canon Rumors.
Thanks Jared for the preview of EOS R. A very good preview and I really appreciate your effort. I think you covered almost all the things I wanted to know about this camera. Good job!
I love that you give honest reviews without sucking the manufacturer’s you know what. They let you borrow a camera and you shitted on it where it needed to be shitted on and praised it where it needed to be praised that means that you have integrity and they didn’t buy your soul! Keep it up!
I thought that the EOS R, at its price and lenses, should be counted as a pro camera, and also be judged like one. Saying that it is not intended for pros is BS.
What do you consider a pro camera? The lenses are of pro quality but the price of this camera is not pro level. It's not even at 5D level of spec, and the 5D retails for USD $3500, whereas the EOS R will retail for $2300. The L lenses are intended for pro use, but they are obviously made to be matched with future pro bodies. The EOS R isn't one of them, though.
The Sony a7R III is a pro camera by any metric possible, and is $1999... $300 less than this "enthusiast" model from Canon that doesn't even have IBIS or dual card slots...
Jack Smith - A7RIII is not 2000. That is the A7III, which is also not considered a pro camera, though it has some impressive specs and lots of pros have one. Those same pros have other models too though, since they know they can't really do anything rugged with the A7III, or really any Sony. They have a ways to go to get the build quality up to the level of the current market. Maybe they will, I don't know their plan.
Sorry, exactly I meant the A7 III. It has dual card slots and IBIS and as you admit, loads and loads of professionals use it. The only thing "un-pro" about is worse weathersealing than its competitors, but the same is true of the A7R III and the A9. Everything else about it exceeds the 5D IV, which was once considered "pro" but is now left wanting and in desperate need of an upgrade.
Hey Jared, gotta say loving the hair, I got to try this camera in London and managed the pair it to my camera connect app what I noticed is that you can set the camera to download the image to your mobile device as you shoot, individuals can weigh up weather this is a suitable for their needs for me I had raw on the card and JPEG’s on my phone. Doing events this can help for me to get images straight up on social media. Great analysis I was impressed with the performance of the ef 50 & ef 85 f1.2. And low light focusing.
The EOS R does not make any claims to be a replacement for the 5DMkIV. I don't think it's perfect at all, in that, I was switching from a Canon 7D and I love the dial and the toggle on the back for all sorts of reasons. Shooting sports the only issue is the lag when you put the camera up to your eye as it switches from live view to EVF mode. I would like the option of having the EVF going continually, so when I move the camera to my eye the image is already there. That is the only issue and it certainly isn't a deal breaker. That being said, if I was a professional sports photographer, I probably wouldn't use it for that purpose, I would use a 1DX - higher FPS and mostly sports shooters are producing for either newsprint or online, and not prints. I find that 30Mp is way big enough, particularly in RAW - in fact some of the images are much bigger than 30Mb, due to the dual pixel setup in the sensor I assume. The detail is incredible and if the Sony A74 is better, fabulous, go Sony. I personally don't need a better image than I get with the Canon EOS R. The video quality is awesome, btw, and I could give a rats about the crop factor. I've been shooting with a 7D for the better part of 8 years, and so the jump in quality is astounding. The quality is broadcast quality, and the EOS R has IBIS for video. You're right to bring up these items in your preview, but in the real world, Canon does what they always do: they produce a camera for a certain segment of their user community and this camera suits me down to the ground. Lighter, works with my L series lenses with the adapter, amazing image quality - the eye autofocus works fine, and I can now shoot at 8fps with tracking on. What is not to like?
you can program a custom function to a button to switch manually between the display and EVF. if the display is closed, only EVF will work, which might be handy in some situations.
Wow, good video Jared. Usually I don’t really enjoy watching your videos, because you seem to be negative just for the sake of being negative, but this actually was pleasant to watch and informative ;)
AWESOME REVIEW - Great job Jared. However you (or I should say Canon) lost me at 8:18.... "ONCE YOU HIT RECORD, THE HISTOGRAM GOES AWAY". This is one of the features that was my deciding factor for purchasing this camera. I use a variable ND on my Panasonic G85 and the histogram is present while recording and changes colour (WHITE = "PROPER" Exposure or YELLOW = Under/Over Exposure). I can see the histogram change "live" as I adjust my variable ND to let me know where it should be set for the scene - VERY useful when vlogging. The fact that Canon omitted this is a real shame!
Fabulous job of covering the important stuff, especially the handling and feel. I love the way Canon DSLRs work with Canon flashes in the automatic ratio fill flash mode and I hope that this camera continues the tradition.
Hey Jared ! Thanks a lot for that video. Looks like the camera is doing good. I will be looking to rent it for a week-end when it's available to see how it works on my hand too. Very appreciated Jared, keep the good work ! ;)
Great hands-on preview, no surprises there, look forward to the full-on real-world version! I guess the adaptability of EF lenses is going to b a big deal, so it's good to see that seems very useable.
Christopher Martin I won’t call him lucky, the dude has created an awesome channel and is reaping the rewards. But at the moment, his situation is enviable 😂
He's certainly luckier than me. Worked hard at some places only to see them go down the pan due to poor management. Unfortunately life isn't fair and there's not much we can do about it
sensor cover when the lens is out if a feature that has been on the LEICA cameras, The display info changing orientation has been on the Fuji cameras for a while.
No IBIS? Only a single card slot? No AF in high speed video (only 720p, at that)? No zebras? Single shot silent shutter? Only 5fps for continuous shooting? The EPIC 4K crop? Single shot "pseudo eye AF"? This thing is so half baked. Nikon's seem better. Sony is still king.
The camera has not shipped yet this is a pre production model. I am pretty sure they will ship it out with the firmware update in the camera. Stephen obviously does not understand how to use digital IS that is Built-in in conjunction with IS and the lens. I tried it and ran with it and it was hard to believe how good it was just as good as my Sony camcorder. Thanks for the review
Your Sony camcorder doesn't compare with IBIS from the best in the market (Panasonic) unless your's specifically has the full floating lens (and sensor) stabilization, but if that was the case, no digital IS or lens IS could compare at all. Digital IS can be half decent when pared with lens IS, but nothing digital can compare to true IBIS, especially when you take into account the reduced lens complexity and stabilization of non-stabilized primes.
@@camerasutra247 I mentioned Balanced Optical Steadyshot (floating lens and sensor), which is IBIS, but also suspending the lenses with the small sensor as well. No Digital IS cannot come close or beat it without super heavy cropping and even then, dealing with rolling-shutter warp is not easy and will be noticable where IBIS can avoid it all together. Also don't forget to take into account that heavier weight of the system will always dampen motion better then a lighter setup, so a mirrorless or DSLR with a big lens will always have an advantage, especially if you use additional points of contact.
TheTechnoPilot You do understand that IBIS will crop your image, right? And that being said.. I’ve worked with shots from actually pro steady cams and we STILL have to digitally stabilize the shots in post. Yes. In this case Digital will always be better than mechanical. Every single time. Also, using these systems you will always get crop. So.. both systems have flaws. Not denying that having IBIS would be a good thing on this camera. For when your lens don’t have IS. On the other mixing IBIS and lens IS is not always the best solution since you might not end up with the stops you need. Many times is better to turn on of the systems off and not combine. The manufacturer should have a chart for this as well.
No. This is officially a production camera according to Canon, they even handed out sheets of paper stating what were full production models and what was still pre production. They also said the firmware will arrive after the initial shipments. Digital IS is NOT the same and doesn’t come close to optical IBIS. I’m well aware how to turn on digital IS in the camera, but chose not to due to the ADDITIONAL crop it slaps on the already 1.7x crop and the terrible wonky warping that canon’s digital IS offers. Any real filmmaker using this camera would never turn digital IS on...
I’m not ready to go mirrorless, yet. However, if I have to build a system starting today to then move forward with into mirrorless, Canon really has my attention.
Time to join the light side of the force. I have decided to shift to all Sony three years ago and I am happy with the decision. Sold out all previous gear and currently have only Sony cameras and G Master lenses. I admit that 2018 is the first year that I can rely 100% on most Sony camera models. In 2017 we could mostly rely on a9.
Nikon and Canon are off their rockers trying to sell a camera that shoots 5.5 fps, one card slot no silent shooting, blah, blah, blah, against the existing DSLR's that offer way more for their price, all these reviewers can try and talk these duds up or down but they are duds! Wont be wasting any money on a "mirrorless" nikon or canon anytime soon......
Nikon can do 9fps on z7 and 12fps on z6 with autofocus and locked exposure. If you shoot in manual mode then exposure is already locked up and that allows to utilise full speed of the camera. With full autofocus and auto exposure Nikon z7 can shoot 5.5fps and z6 can shoot 9fps.
Locked exposure is NO good for wildlife /bird photography...….animals/birds don't just move in "fixed Light"...….why would anyone currently using a D850 or a D500 want to buy one of these new Nikons? WHY?
Man! Jared do you write out your comments ahead of time? Amazing stuff, entertaining, informative and you just have a great flow! Great preview! Tho I don't really like the camera.
Why are Vloggers concerned with the 4K crop??? Why would a vlogger shoot a 'talking head' in 4K quality? What percentage of viewers currently really view RUclips in anything higher than 720p really? Also....what percentage of people viewing RUclips have displays or TV's that can view 4K? Also, Canon's EF-S 10-18 is really sharp and inexpensive....should be fine for any Vlogger in a confined space...if they really want to film in 4K.
Literally every smartphone has at least a 1080p hd display. It is not about the 4K video on RUclips, but the cropping/post production to 1080p after the video is done.
Don't most people have a 1920x1080 resolution screen nowadays? Wouldn't they all watch RUclips fullscreen? ( I know I do) (I don't understand the hype about 4K though)
You shoot in 4K so that you can pan and zoom your 1080p final within the extra pixel space. Seen the movie "Upgrade" yet? A lot of the fancy-looking camera work is just them editing down an 8K original to a 4K final with a lot of panning and zooming within that frame.
Great review Jared. I actually don’t think Canon is anywhere near being able to offer a 1DXII class mirrorless, they just do not have the sensor tech yet. Readout speed is paramount and they are way behind at the moment. That needs to change even for a 5D4 class camera that will probably have to go up against an A7R4 in 12 months or so. Also another thing the camera can only shoot 3pfs in AF-C if you actually want tracking, again a consequence of the poor sensor readout speed. 5fps is only for shooting priority which means no guarantee shots will be focused. Nive first effort and promising, but with crippled video, slow shooting speed,, single card, I’ll wait for the next camera. At the moment I’d get the Z6, but that’s not on my radar either.
I stand to be corrected (because I cant remember) but was Jared one of those people dissing the older Sony's because you'd hit the buffer 'too quickly' in burst mode? if so thats a bit hypocritical to be now all cool with having to get it in one shot
But there are still some really good shots too, ones that couldn't be done without it, and it was more the knowledge of composition that made the shots I like what they are rather than the HDR mode.
cooloox Do you want challenges? Just shot film. ;P
(Funny how from now to shoot with DSLR is a challenge.....)
+cooloox
Ditto!
Now you need to get a T-shirt saying "I shoot RAW + JPEG" 😂
Would buy one.
I really love your real world reviews. So many people butch about this camera(or any camera) without even getting their hands on the camera at all, just by looking at he specs sheet.
Keep up the great work and thanks for the awesome job!
"Gotta have the model run to test the autofocus...". SUUUUUUURE....good one Jared 😏
Marco Rosales BEEEEWWWWWBSSS
Jared, thank you very much for this excellent review. I appreciate that you looked at the EOS R as objectively as possible. Your preview-review has caused me to seriously consider this camera as I am pitting it against the Sony A7III. Its feasibility would greatly increase if the firmware update allows Eye-AF continuous as well as Silent continuous shooting. Hopefully they also either include exposure Zebras or fix the disappearing Histogram when shooting video. BTW, I am more disappointed that Canon excluded IBIS and full-HD 120fps than the one card slot.
I would really like to know the following:
1. Its performance in low-light indoor shooting. I saw the few shots you did, but the noise appeared a little higher than I would like, especially when compared to the A7III.
2. The highest usable ISO
3. Success of Smart Phone connection for GPS tagging

This was a really really great unbiased unemotional video. If you have a ton on Canon glass this camera is a no brainier.
“Any camera, in the right person’s hands, can be a pro camera” no truer words have been spoken.
All cameras now adays are good what people need to focus on is what's good for you whether that's ergonomics, specs, familiarity etc. Do what's right for you and your photography!
Personally I need 1080P@120FPS .. so this camera is not good *enough* for me.
Also lack of IBIS really doesnt help.
Exactly!
Exactly!
Wow... a real hands on with real objectivity and no pandering to any faction... Kudos Jared! Yours are the best hands on and real world review I can find!
Cheers
The shutter covering the sensor is an interesting [and welcomed] improvement for mirrorless. I hope the other companies adapt this. I pick up dirt every lens change.
You should try a olympus one day. I can leave it wide open and no dirt.
Dylan Baraldi I have only realized it was 22 minutes after reading your comment :) it is great video
*preview
The shutter covering the sensor when switching lenses is a GREAT feature, and one I want to see all the camera companies doing for mirrorless cameras in the future. Those shots of the model running on the beach looked really good too.
To me the adapter with the integrated ND filter is probably the most innovative thing from this Camera... really a brilliant idea imho.
Dude I have watched DAYS of videos on the R, and yours was THE MOST streamlined, honest and concise I have seen yet. Thanks so much!
11:00 ".....any camera in the right person's hand can be a PRO camera." - @Jared Polin
Very well said. Nice! :)
All this Pro crap, who cares. pro just means you are getting paid. Street Walker is a pro.
*drops mic*
As a long time mirrorless shooter, the closed shutter feature when changing lenses is GREAT. I wish this feature came out earlier because it is a major problem when swapping lenses in field.
Great first hand review Jared. I can’t wait to see what you think after the firmware update and you really put it through the pace.
Hi Jared. A very helpful review. I have viewed a few of your reviews and they have been helpful. I love that you fly through the info and make it effective to listen and watch.
Aside from that color shift that Stephen faced in super impressed! (Then again I'm someone who never gets out of AWB)
Thanks a million for this video guys! M so happy!!
I can’t believe this was 22 minutes long. I was engaged the whole time, bravo sir!
best preview/review so far on this camera

Except the A7Rii was superior to the 5d IV already and no AA
shaolin95 we get it people love Sony but Canon owners who don't want to switch systems don't care.
Hay jared thanks for your time 😍💞
the quickest and simplest way to move focusing points in the frame are with COMMAND DIALS. Main dial moves the focusing point/s left & right; secondary dial moves them up and down. the effect is the same as if you were using a joystick.
Good review and good pacing. I'm time-poor atm so appreciated you pushing it along.
Stephen is the GOAT.
Forgot to take footage of the model jumping up and down......ah hem.....for scientific purposes.
It was Stephen and I on this trip. Stephen did the edit partially while in Hawaii and partially on Sunday when he got home.
I think the people who thumbed down are Nikon and Sony users.
track sony fanboys
Canon, Nikon, etc. should hire people like you, before launching a new camera so they won’t do it wrong !! Keep the good work my friend !!
You called it. The R3 is insane
Dang Jared you flipped that camera like a robot @ 2:10 😂! So precise!
oh yea!!!
Judging by the features and price point, this seems like a solid replacement for the 6d mark ii.
Canon really play a smart move here, when other mirrorless maker add black images in between the shots to indicate you are not seeing the things in real time, Canon just cheated and freeze and pretend it's "no black out".
right, but you don't notice it at all.
It's more about the lenses than the camera. but even more than that, it's the photographer, so the more types of lenses the more creative possibilities.
might want to get the eos R, or wait for another Eos R camera.
Definitely Canon!
Great review. Very thorough.
wow the best preview to date man.
What's the name of the model? For research purposes of course.

Jesus, that set Lindsay Adler created looks amazing.
Those are very big and important steps. Will be interesting.
Thanks Jared for the preview of EOS R. A very good preview and I really appreciate your effort. I think you covered almost all the things I wanted to know about this camera. Good job!
Dude you look SO MUCH BETTER with your hair like that! I’m a hairstylist that’s my professional opinion you’re welcome!
I love that you give honest reviews without sucking the manufacturer’s you know what. They let you borrow a camera and you shitted on it where it needed to be shitted on and praised it where it needed to be praised that means that you have integrity and they didn’t buy your soul! Keep it up!
Beast of a review - very well covered and informative
Good review, not put off by the lack of features on launch a single bit. Solid AF and no more lens microadjustments is a dream come true
@@benlunsford4103 Where are you seeing the A7R III for $2000? It originally retailed for $3200.
So is Canon going all in on this system? Because i'm not sure if I should sell my EF lenses for the (sort of) equivalent RF lenses :\
this is the future , but you shouldn't change right now
Get the RF to EF adapters from Canon
Yes, the RF 50mm f1.2 & RF 28-70mm f2 are super lens
Did you look at the pricetag of these RF lens ...
Super expensiv lenses...
Money money 💰
Just dont unterstand why canon abandoned the intervelometer and timelapse movie mode.....
lol, did they?
well, sony doe snot offer such functions in their top layer cameras
but you can get around it with a cheap remote or use the s&q mode
I am sure that will be in either the next camera or firmware update.
This camera has timelapse movie mode (4k), we just didn’t discuss it since it’s not necessarily a new feature.
Toby from photorectv pointed out in his last video that there is no intervelometer built in but there is an external remote for an intervelometer.
Just wait for the firmware hacks :)
Thank you sir. I'm in no hurry for another camera but now I don't have to worry about my rather large collection of Canon glass. Thanks again.
3:37 and i thought that the sun was bright!!
Very appreciated Jared, keep the good work ! ;)
Best, most comprehensive preview I've seen yet. I'll definitely be checking out the sample images. Thanks!
There's a reason they call it a JOYstick
I love your reviews, and this is such a nice "pre" review as it gives us all the info we want to know. Keep it up man love your work
Tremendous video. Well done Jared & Stephen.
Great hands-on preview, no surprises there, look forward to the full-on real-world version! I guess the adaptability of EF lenses is going to b a big deal, so it's good to see that seems very useable.
Thank you for the great review!
Best EOS R Review Yet! No mimimi just beeing realistic and neutral!
Jared chasing a model down the beach in Hawaii and I’m looking at flood conditions in Baltimore. Where did I go wrong?
Yeah, what a gig.
It's called "Life". Some get lucky, like Jared, and some of us get thrown continual crap, like you and me
Christopher Martin I won’t call him lucky, the dude has created an awesome channel and is reaping the rewards. But at the moment, his situation is enviable 😂
He's certainly luckier than me. Worked hard at some places only to see them go down the pan due to poor management. Unfortunately life isn't fair and there's not much we can do about it
Well done Jared - top review with fact and no bias. Refreshing and real - this is a pro review. Can’t wait for your update
Switch to Sony is in the title. Did I miss that part in the video?
You say, after watching the video...
Should you?
Switch to click-bait?
It did seem like click bait
Probably did that to try and bait people in...seems like there’s a lot who would be baited by that 😂
Yup, like me!
sensor cover when the lens is out if a feature that has been on the LEICA cameras, The display info changing orientation has been on the Fuji cameras for a while.
King of the drag queens
Wut?
It all depends what kind of glass you have. The bodies are the least expense of anything.
@@bobhanuman65 As I said before, all Canon had to do was make an A7III that mounted EF lenses. They failed.
STOP-MAKING-THINGS-UP-FOR-NIKON-USER-!
Thank you Jared and Stephen! Great work as always.
@@TheTechnoPilot lol you are delusional the ax53 has far better stabilizers than any freakin ibis camera. Go check it out.
Excellent, unbiased, objective review - a rarity on RUclips! Thanks so much!
You da-man!!! Thanks you filled a big void!
I’m not ready to go mirrorless, yet. However, if I have to build a system starting today to then move forward with into mirrorless, Canon really has my attention.
I shoot raw!
Imagine jared being bald or having straight hair
with no beard..
Best Review of the EOS-R yet... Thanks Jared!
( I know I do)
(I don't understand the hype about 4K though)
You shoot in 4K so that you can pan and zoom your 1080p final within the extra pixel space. Seen the movie "Upgrade" yet? A lot of the fancy-looking camera work is just them editing down an 8K original to a 4K final with a lot of panning and zooming within that frame.
you sound like the perfect target customer for Canon. Outdated and ill-informed 😂😂😂
And you sound like a troll, so why should I give a damn?
"If you cant get the shot in one shot you shouldn't be shooting at all" -- Fro Guy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Then You shouldn't be shooting at all
Then complains about one-shot silent shooting ... which is right?
I stand to be corrected (because I cant remember) but was Jared one of those people dissing the older Sony's because you'd hit the buffer 'too quickly' in burst mode? if so thats a bit hypocritical to be now all cool with having to get it in one shot
Scared Jared.. no showing love to this comment ;) #hypocrite
Maybe your best video. Worth the wait as always.
Thanks !! ;-))
