Not quite sure why but the Sony image doesn't look as nice as the Canon? It's like, the Canon background seems like darker and the image goes from focus to out of focus gradually, but the Sony just look like, in focus and then straight out of focus.
The box doesn’t 100% correlate to where the camera is actually focusing, If the sony on the images acquired the same amount of images as the Canon it doesn’t really matter if it’s slightly off as that is just software, Nikon also acquired more images then what you would think out from the box, so I really think we should be careful with over estimate the box and it’s meaning, obviously we prefer to be as precise as possible to where the camera is actually focusing but being slightly off isn’t a huge deal breaker. Also in my experience these brands tend to do better at different sports, so while one might slightly edge one in one, the other might do it in another. It’s simply has to do with how long, how much and how many different subjects it has been trained at. Canon is well know for their abilities with sports with helmets. Sony generally doesn’t seem to have much of a foothold in American market compared to in Europe and in Europe helmets aren’t something you see much in major sports. Also I would kinda expect a lower resolution to potential be faster at focusing with the same technology, when Sony release the A9iii I would expect it to actually outperform the A1 in AF-C
Good compare and shows how close they are, i think what we are seeing is that the canon has about a year more of training (no pun intended) we know they for example trained the detection for helmets while the sony A1 was not (yet?). Both the canon R3 and nikon Z9 are trained on more subjects and use-cases as the sony. As a sony A1 user think sony got a little slow in updating their eye-af and tracking since the other 2 where well basicly 2+ years ago. We notice that in the quick adding of bird detect mode on the sony that seems a little rushed. Now the good news is that this is all software base and after about a year we can expect sony to react with a software update to also add some of these more wide detection modes (like helmets) and maybe even a 'unified' focus system like the nikon has. One thing that will for sure help the A1 vs R3 (not Z9) is using the 'crop' dial on that lens where it jumps right into crop mode the reason is that the tracking system works on the image it gets and eyes/birds are detected much faster (and stay) when they are bigger in the image. Hope next test we see a compare of what you guys call soccer since i think they will match up better. But again as a sony A1 owner i fully see and feel both the R3 and Z9 are better trained for subject detection then the A1 at this point... Your move sony in the area of machine learning and showing what the new cpu's inside still have left and what the software developers have been able to optimize over the last year to give more of the cpu cycles back to that part of the camera. Lastly i noticed the A1 seems to remember the last subject somehow between bursts so say you zoom in on a bird and it gets the eye and you move away from it stop shooting and go back to it it finds the eye quicker not tested this fully but this might be helpful at times not 100% sure how it works yet but clearly it seems to remember 1 or 2 subjets back. Now lets see once the R3 and Z9 are fully shipping if sony announced the A1's first software update and if the area of subject detection gets tuned.
You can move focus point faster in the A1 by turning on the half screen touchpad that turns the back of the screen into a cursor that controls the focus square. Settings > Setup > Touch Operation > Touchpad Settings
Yes, the Canon was more sticky. The A1 was sometimes focusing on the shoulders or the backs of the players. I can’t imagine what these manufacturers will achieve 10 years from today.
@@lovesushma48 It was not trained for helmets like the R3 and Z9 for now.. thats probably the biggest reason the 2 lines at the side of the focus box show it tracking 'a object, probably a round thing we call a head' but it has not detected a head because it was not trained for helmets (yet?). Check the first part where there are people without helmets see how the boxes look different and also (depends on a preset) you see multiple dark grey boxes of other heads it finds.
@@lovesushma48 ugh, yep. I notice this all the time with my Sonys, they just sometimes pick the wrong area despite a face clearly visible. If I wasn't so invested with Sony, I'd order a pair of Z9s and use them until I die.
Hey Jared, I watched your video comparison of Sony and Canon R3. I'm a canon shooter currently buying the R5. My best friend/photography partner shoots Sony, used to be a canon shooter. He is all in for Sony, I sent him your above video to show him an honest opinion that Canon has caught up to Sony in the AF field. As a true all in Sony user he started to attack the reviewer, you as if you did not know how to use the Sony menus to setup the automatic focus while shooting the football game and that is the reason you felt canon autofocus was better in this review. I told him Jared shoots photography with Sony and video with Canon so I think he is qualified to know how to setup any Sony Camera. That feel on deaf ears as he is all in with sony and no other camera can compete with sony,. I have great respect for your videos as they have been very helpful to me....
Thanks. I am curious to see which direction Sony will take with the A9III after the release of the A1 (Top of the line). I think Sony will probably never go to a full body like the R3, but keep the 24MP, but a new sensor for speed,... Do you think the R3 is in the same category as the A9 series? A comparison like this, probably better? R3 - A9II (A9III later) Z9 - A1
@@chanjeff4406 You are probably right. Unless they want to make it cheaper and keep it 24MP. But as you said, what's the point? A1, even with its big MP count is great, the Z9 as well (as per the reviews to date). Probably Canon was kind of forced to mention the R3 not a flagship after the release of the A1, and now Z9. Great products for professionals who really need and want them, and can afford those for their job(ROI, they are not for everyone). Let's wait and see... thanks.
I shoot Canon DSLRs so I was hoping for good news from the R3. However, my personal preference aside, I enjoy the competition among the big 3 (Canon, Nikon, & Sony). I, too, thought the Canon was better with autofocus performance, but I was concerned that my personal bias was clouding my thoughts. It was nice to see that Jared's words matched my thoughts about autofocus performance. I understand why the A1 is such a difficult camera to "dethrone". It's wonderful. So is the R3. Very good video, very helpful comparison even for a hobbyist such as myself.
I just saw another comparison by a white couple using heavy prime lenses for quick action focus test with the R3 with the 50mm 1.2 and A1 with the 47mm primes..... they concluded A1 was better.
I personally like the Canon having the shutter indicator flicker-thingy (you know what I mean, the frame that lets you know you're taking photos) on the edge of the viewfinder and not disturbing my view. I agree that it'd be kinda cool to have a buffer-bar like the sony or something similar tho. I think if I could choose, I'd want a little colored dot in a corner blinking when I take photos. Little to no distraction, yet very eye-catching and clear.
Which sports photography camera would you recommend? r3, r5, r6, 1DXii, z9, a1 I'm with a Canon camera, so it's also important that the camera works well with an adapter for EF lenses
I fully agree with you. Although I did not use the Sony A1 and Canon R3. However, I have experience on the Canon R5, Canon R7 and Sony A7rV. It seems as if Canon likes to recognize objects - the eyes of people, animals. How he would enjoy it. ;-) It may be funny, but I recognize even edible elements. He sticks to birds flying far away, looks for them among the reeds as if to say I've got you, point for me. ;-) At Sony, there is a lot of talk about AI, the approach of engineers, new revolutionary solutions, but in normal use it looks a bit different. I've been changing the viscosity and AF sensitivity settings for another month. When I hear about the "learning curve" I laugh. Sony AF and recognition work well, but it's as if it was telling you, okay, I'll do it again, but maybe differently.... For sure: I didn't succeed in Sony: so that the AF doesn't make mistakes when the bird is in the water, between branches to hold AF. It's probably a bit similar in the latest Nikon 4.10 firmware for Nikon Z9. You run the Canon R7 straight from the box and it recognizes a bird with a long neck, e.g. a heron. There must be a big discussion at Nikon about what to use and how to set it for a bird with a short and long neck. (10/2023)
Former canon Sony shooter for past year… my take away was how clean the canon evf is, not it’s resolution but the lack of that black bar at the bottom, looks huge and easier to track with far less distractions and agree the r3 looks stickier than the A1, canon colours are so nice. Never been overly impressed with my a9ll and my A7r4 is very very hit and miss….but for now will stick to Sony but not sure for how long
I don't shoot much sports these days, I've previously shot MotoGP, World Superbikes, British Touring Cars and rugby and would have loved either of these cameras. I occasionaly photograph cycling and again would love either of these for that. In my day job I shoot corporate stuff but I also shoot concerts. I've only used the EOS R so far and found the face tracking to be unreliable in the low light environment of concerts and I turn it off.
I think the Canon was better considering it was shooting at 30fps and the Sony was only at 20fps. The Canon viewfinder seemed clearer and brighter as well.
Yep, and also the R5 (a third tier camera) was shooting 45mp at 20fps uncompressed raw since 2020 before the A1 came out. The A1 (a flagship camera) can't shoot 30fps in uncompressed raw, only 20fps. The R3 is not a flagship camera, so it holds up very well when compared to flagship cameras.
@@jaegerschtulmann haha fanboys you've got to love them 😻 light the blue touch paper and watch them go off !🎇🎆 🤣 seriously though the R3 isn't even the Canon flagship body ! Wait till better bodies come out from Canon and Nikon. The colour cast and the muggy files out of the A1 looked awful compared to the R3, not good for professional sport shooters who send shots straight to agencies, hopefully the JPEGs from both cameras don't need too much work on them ?
@@shang-hsienyang1284 thanks for telling me that about the TV and the output !! Who'd of thought it ??? 😜🙄 I've only been shooting sports photography for 40 + years and realise that the files from the Sony looked drab compared to the Canons. I don't need a TV or 4K to see that.
Give more credit to A1 since higher MP but auto focus works almost the same as R3, Canon seems to have better auto focus and cleaner in the video. I would prefer Canon R3
The resolution difference between the a1 and the R3 exist because it is the back screen that is recorded not the evf ;) and it is easy to spot, evfs are 4/3 aspect ratio, on the a1 the screen too but the R3 recording definitively has a 3/2 aspect ratio capture so that is the back screen and the canon has the best resolution on it
Hi Jared, I noticed that your shutter speed was at 1/1600 while your ISO was 500 (3:08) where you hoping to get a very still image? And if yes, why would you suggest doing this besides a lower shutter speed in a situation like this?
He’s trying to shoot as wide open as he can to test the focus, so he needs a high shutter and iso. Plus he mentioned the weather was variable which is why he probably wasn’t at a lower iso
From what's been said from several sources, Canon will be tweaking the Eye Control during a good few f/w updates! I suspect many will try it initially then not use it - it's not the headline feature of the R3 - it's AF selection sounds good without it. The AF tracking on the R3, A1 & Z9 are all pretty damn good. How each handle bird's eye reflections on water will be interesting but the difference in distance therefore focus will probably be insignificant anyway.
Would you give a little background on why you are not using Eye AF on the R3? I thought that it was maybe because of the helmets, but I noticed that you didn't use Eye AF with the soccer players either in the video where you provided the RAWs. Thanks.
The Canon was the winner from what I saw. Not to say the Sony is bad. Both are amazing. But I like the canon more for a few reasons: • Image quality… The colors from the Canon looked more pleasing imo. • Battery life. • Handling… I prefer this format for serious shooting. • Ability to dial in AF settings. • Lots of options for selecting direct focus points.
I like the almost subdued Jared in this video (it’s all relative) and it does really help with the credibility of the content (which I find consistently excellent).
Great video Jared. One thing that confuses me relates to the no black out EVF experience - I noticed some jerkiness and skipping on both Canon and Sony when you were taking shots. Can you comment on the no-black-out experience on both cameras. Any comparison to Nikon Z9 hands on?
Another great video. Good real life comparison. People are going stick with what they have. Not many who spent 6k on a body are going to say the other brand is better. They are going to ride the horse they are on.
i was regretting buying the R3, and WISHED I got the A1, for a silky hig rez look, but after watching lots of videos on the A1 and R3 I think I am just fine with my R3 and Im sticking to it because the differences are not that vast...but I do think the highter megapixels on the A1 have a slight edge over the R3, but again, it's not all about pixels... The ergonomics, features, bells, and whistles are important but at the end of the day, the client does not care about our comfort or how many buttons our cameras have, they only see the end result, and I wanted the best. To sell off my new R3 and accessories to get the A1 would be a huge financial loss and set back...Im sticking with the R3, I know it is fully capable of getting superior images I just need to use very fast, high-quality glass for my lenses.
It seems to me A1 is little better. Canon's autofocus can't continuously track the player he wanted. Sometimes tracking goes to other player. A1 is more consistent in this regard.
Great tests many thanks. What was your feeling about both cameras in terms of dynamic range on the RAW files? Did one seem any better than the other? Are they both at the top of the camera world or do you feel they are somehow lacking in dynamic range. Thanks!
Well 1/1000 shooter speed would have been enough for these pictures to freeze the motion. I know this cameras handle ISO well but if you heavy crop then noise might pop up. Also canon images are cleaner at the same ISO comparing your pictures because sony uses 50mp sensor for sports which is unnecessary
Still shooting a 1Dx and see how far the AF has come, while it seems just yesterday the 1Dx AF was king and warranted $6500. I'd imagine the R6/5/3 will have a ten year shelf life easily compared to say how short the 5D/2/3/4 lifespans were. The short time I owned a 7D MK II showed me the future with on sensor dual pixel AF - if only that had translated into FF DSLR bodies for a reasonable price as the 5D4 is still overpriced when the R6 is so near in cost.

Yes sony seems like focusing on chest/ chin
I recently got into photographing basketball games and I love using Skittles on on my images. Thank you so much Jared!
Great review Jared. I trust you and Zamani for honest reviews of gear and sports shooting
Canon R5C is better than R3 ;
Tony gave more marks to A1
But I trust Jared more
He is a sony user... dont care tony and chelsea opinion haha
because the update for the R5 im goin to purchase one
You can remap the button config on your camera to make the sony and canon the same!
R3 - A9II (A9III later)
Z9 - A1
A9 is still a thousand usd cheaper
I think A1 has already replaced the a9 series and probably a9iii is not happening
You’re taking camera reviews to a new level - answering our questions before we come up with them.
I got real excited to see you were at the University of Houston, shooting and now watching the the video of that day. Go Coogs... Great job!!!
Casually testing out $40k in a few pieces of gear...
I understand that Canon has superior Autofocus compared to others. BUT does it maintain its superiority once we use EF lenses + Mount??
It’s really solid adapted with Ef.
Jared, I got your presets and I am loving them! So much fun! I'm using them with my new Sony a6600, shooting raw.
I just saw another comparison by a white couple using heavy prime lenses for quick action focus test with the R3 with the 50mm 1.2 and A1 with the 47mm primes..... they concluded A1 was better.
I would never trust the Northrup. They are so fishy
Fantastic results from both.
Question: On the a1 were you using Tracking: Wide focus area mode the most?
Wow was waiting for this one! Thanks Jared.
Interesting! I couldn't tell the difference between stickiness or face acquisition from the footage, but good to know both are fantastic.
I own an original A9 and its cool to see other camera brands out AF-ing the Sonys finally. Congrats.
Thank you Jared another fine video... would love to see a video of the R3 on wildlife especially birds inflight... regards Martin
Since Canon says the 1Dxiii is their flagship you should include it in the A1 vs Z9 vs R3 review
But that is a dslr... do sony has dslr? Oh never mind they dont have hahaha
Which sports photography camera would you recommend?
r3, r5, r6, 1DXii, z9, a1
I'm with a Canon camera, so it's also important that the camera works well with an adapter for EF lenses
Jared, subjects moving fast towards you, Sony has this amazing 4D technology added to the AF system. Can the R3 keep up?
Great video! I look forward with your experience with the z6 and z7 new firmware updates
Excellent review Jared, you’re at your best with these! Now if my Z9 would turn up, I’d be even happier!!
Former canon Sony shooter for past year… my take away was how clean the canon evf is, not it’s resolution but the lack of that black bar at the bottom, looks huge and easier to track with far less distractions and agree the r3 looks stickier than the A1, canon colours are so nice. Never been overly impressed with my a9ll and my A7r4 is very very hit and miss….but for now will stick to Sony but not sure for how long
You’ll hate the r3
@@Yupthereitism Why? not going to get one anytime soon but wondered why?
Great job Jared! Hope that Canon will put 20-30 megapixels more in his R1 and it would be perfect.
This may sound like a dumb question, but is the auto focus something Sony can improve through a firmware update?
Not a stupid question. But only Sony really knows the answer. Whether this af algorithm is hardware or software limited.
Wrong! Sony deserves the win as it’s basically shooting pics twice the resolution. Bend the knee to King Sony 👑
That is the HDMI out of the EVF, not the EVF. You do not shoot sport by putting a 4K TV on the sidelines and looking at it instead of the EVF..
I find it funny that RUclips played a Nikon Z7 II ad right before this video, almost like making sure we all remember that Nikon still exists....
I like that I can look through my images on A1 and it shows where the focus point hit, I wish this would carry to Lightroom
Jared, come out with the Z9 comparison already, waiting on your opinion before I buy, seriously!
Seems the problem is mostly the box display for the Sony while it still actually keep on capturing the subject
Give more credit to A1 since higher MP but auto focus works almost the same as R3, Canon seems to have better auto focus and cleaner in the video. I would prefer Canon R3
Completely agree! Love the 50mp on sony tho
Jared, I keep seeing the NFC icon pop up on the Sony, any idea what's up with that?
can‘t wait for the update in December 2
I didn't notice any difference in the viewfinder "smoothieness" until you mentioned it! Damn it Polin!! Why do you always do this to me?!!!
@@NickzAndMikz that makes total sense, thank you!
@@ManyWaysFilms 15:20
@@jimmyqballs why do u say u have to be careful with the A1? I use an a7riv and find it have to shoot faster than I did on the a7iii.
I shoot basketball game last night with my m6ii with 1/1000s iso 3200 and aperture 1.8
How would the R5 compare to those two? Just being curious…
Hi Jared, may I ask the reason why you didn't take into consideration of the Eye Control AF System?
On all the R series cameras you can customize which dial changes ISO. Great video btw, I appreciate how much effort you put into these videos..
R3 is way better aquiring focus when changing subject.
Hi Jared, did you use the eye-Tracking? Can you recommend it? Greetinds from Austria, Peter
Imagine if Canon brings out the QuadPixel AF in the R1 next year!
The verdict: you can't afford them... and even if you could, they'll never be in stock!
But I like the canon more for a few reasons:
• Image quality… The colors from the Canon looked more pleasing imo.
• Battery life.
• Handling… I prefer this format for serious shooting.
• Ability to dial in AF settings.
• Lots of options for selecting direct focus points.
I like the almost subdued Jared in this video (it’s all relative) and it does really help with the credibility of the content (which I find consistently excellent).
is there any option to produce Sigma lens for Canon RF ...???
Fuck sakes Jared, what took you so long, I was starving for your content.
Thank you. Another great video.
Was the AF sensitivity set on Sony A1 to 5 or 1?
Great video Jared. One thing that confuses me relates to the no black out EVF experience - I noticed some jerkiness and skipping on both Canon and Sony when you were taking shots. Can you comment on the no-black-out experience on both cameras. Any comparison to Nikon Z9 hands on?
it would be interesting to see side by side comparison of the Z9 and R3
Can't wait till the fanboys(girls, enbies) tear each other apart in the comments section. Let me get my popcorn. 🤣
I'm sure the conclusion was that exactly the opposite is true.
That’s what I saw as well. JP doesn’t think so
Canon paid him. He is showing different thing and saying the otherways as if we are blind. 😂😂 And sony has 50 mp sensor.
Great tests many thanks. What was your feeling about both cameras in terms of dynamic range on the RAW files? Did one seem any better than the other? Are they both at the top of the camera world or do you feel they are somehow lacking in dynamic range. Thanks!
what setting show me how much I'm zoomed in on in the EVF? I'd love to know that.
when will you make a dedicated video to canon's new eye control autofocus?
I won’t. We can’t show it to you because the eye needs to be in the viewfinder. But I haven’t used it yet in all my shoots.
@@froknowsphoto well hopefully you might someday. We would like know your opinion about its usability and reliability in the long run.
I can’t wait for the Sony a7rs1 to drop.
Shoot one camera early on in the day, more light, then a different camera later in the day, less light. Makes sense. /s
