    I have been invested in Nikon since 2016 with 5 bodies ( Z9, D850, D500, D800, D7200) and a lot of glass including the trinity, a 600mm f/4, some other telephotos and a bunch of fast primes. I pre-ordered the Z9 on the day of announcement and it came a couple of weeks ago. The Z9 is an amazing camera with the most important features to me being the AF system, ibis, and ability to use my AF-S f-mount glass. It is the right decision for me.

      After taking a glance at your youtube channel, I must confess that I am not worthy! The D850 belongs to people like you who can better appreciate it.
      Off-topic, I must ask you, as an astrophotography enthusiast... Do you think that a D810A variant of the D810 would be appropriate for 3D model creation with Photogrammetry software?
      My instincts tell me that the additional light spectrum available on the D810A would give my software more matching pixel pairs between a given pair of images.
      I'd love to try it out, but it would be an expensive experiment to try on just a hunch.

    Don't own a Z9 or any mirrorless, but I work with photographers who use all 3 of the cameras you compared. What I hear consistently is that the Z9 is the only one that works as well with native and non-native lens. I know a Z9 user who owns both the native 70-200 and the 5-year-old Tamron 70-200 G2 and he can't tell the difference. The A1 and the R3 users have had inconsistent results with non-native lenes. That's a really big deal for those of us who have invested a lot in their lens collection. I am an 850 user; I don't think either of these cameras produce better image quality than my 850; however, their autofocus capability is almost unreal. With the Z9 you are getting the best of the 850 and the D5.

    I actually went with the alpha 1 for a multitude of reasons but to keep it simple, I'm already on the Sony platform and have a decent handful of lenses. I will say if I were starting based off of one of these three though that I would still choose the alpha 1 over the R3 for the higher resolution. It helps to have the larger image size when I need to do a crop in on live action and wildlife shots. However, they are all outstanding performers and the real differences are so minute that I don't think anyone would go wrong with any of these systems!

    Given that Nikon now has the ability to AUTO focus MANUAL lenses with the Techart adapter is pretty insane for those of us with a lot of old Nikon manual lenses or really any manual lens from Leica or Canon. To me, the sensor distance for Nikon letting you adapt any lens greatly expands why it's a great system.

    I started with Canon platform 25 yrs ago then got into Nikon platform when Nikon D3 was released. Sold all Canon 1D series and all in with Nikon. Then got a D4 then noticed fir the last 8 yrs Nikon system was behind abs worried they might not lasted as a company.
    Last year i was ready for a new camera and wanted a good hybrid system for still and video. Nikon didn’t have anything comparable to Canon and Sony. Purchased Canon R3 last November and while i liked it the 24 megapixel was too low for cropping on some usage. What i liked was that the body was really light for the form factor and eye auto focus but i had a few issue calibrating with my eye. But when Z9 was announced and it fits my needs. So I sold the R3, RF 24/200/2.8 and 70/200/2.8 IS. My only complaint with Z9 was that it is heavy. Just a little lighter than my old D4 but not by much. Wished it would be a lot lighter especially when you pair it with pro lenses like 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 S lenses. Any way, I’m happy with my decision since i already have a few Nikon lenses but now I’m slowly replacing F mount lenses with S mount. It’s sure is a very expensive hobby for sure. Yes it’s probably more than my needs but life is too short so why not.

      I have watched different RUclipsrs and testers get different results as far as autofocus goes when testing these cameras. Some say the Z9 is the best and some say the R3 is the best. I think it comes down to the way you set it up. Mark Smith and Jared Polin are the only ones that I have seen that rank the Z9 as the worst of the 3. I love my Sony A1 with the 35-150. I also have the 150-600 and a couple others.
    Sony a1 i think will be the top camera for a while still. I think it is so advanced that there's no need to upgrade. If your pictures are not turning out with either camera it's the photographers error. I think the Sony is a little power house and if you need that extra grip you can put it on. You don't have to carry that extra weight especially when your hiking taking pics of wildlife and you have one of those huge lenses to capture your subjects. And don't forget Sony makes sensors for most of these cameras. As for working in the dark. It's called muscle memory. It's not hard to memorize the buttons. Plus all the third-party lenses. I just think people like to jump on the next new not necessarily the best thing.

    I think it is worth mentioning that the A1 mshutter can sync up to 1/400 in FF and 1/500 in crop mode. That is likely the most advanced mech shutter ever built a very valuable feature and probably a good chunk of the added cost of the A1. I often use non HSS strobes and it can be very useful to sync faster for more control over ambient light or freezing action in hybrid lighting conditions.

      Jared has never seemed to understand the word "lossless".

    • @tubularificationed
      @tubularificationed 2 года назад +4

      @Jared, "lossless" just uses the fact that two neighboring pixels are usually so similar, that it saves space to express their difference as a small delta, rather than full e.g. 14 bit values. If 3 bits are enough to express the delta, then only 3 bits will be used.
      Also with regards to "lossy" RAW compression, there are differences.
      Nikon e.g. just reduces the bit depth of pixel values where the excess bits would drown in noise anyway. So this is artifact free.
      Sony is "lossy" more aggressively, they reduce bit depth across contrast edges, where Sony assumes that the eye is distracted by the contrast so much, that it doesn't sense bit depth nuances. Unfortunately, if the contrast gets really big (e.g. stars in night sky, or night city scenes), then artifacts do occur across contrast edges.

    I bought my first Nikon in 1979, an FE, and it still works, although I don't shoot film anymore since the late nineties. I've never had a reliability issue with any of the 10 or more Nikon cameras (and the many Nikkor lenses) I have owned. Not once. So, even if the Z9 is not what I really need, I definitely would opt for the Z system the day I go mirrorless. But as the 'old'
    cameras don't break down, that won't be any day soon...

    I'm reposting my comment here that I made on a similar and very recent review because my husband and I have been using Nikon, Canon, and Sony bodies extensively.
    My husband and I both shoot Weddings together- I went from Canons into Sony ,and now a mix of both brands for me with the Canon R5.
    My husband has been a die hard Nikon loyalist who for years shot by the "F8 and be there " motto- when he might want a shallow DOF with lots of bokeh, he would by necessity have me do those shots because his bodies would never give us enough material to sort through with the eyes in critical focus, while my Sonys and the R5 would do it with ease- our biggest problem with the Sony bodies and the R5 was sorting thru thousands of shots in perfect focus with perhaps 1 or 2 % soft while we would sort thru hundreds of Nikon shots with approx a 10-15% AF soft or out of focus rate.
    The work flow difference was dramatic.Now that he's got the Z9 ,we see a dramatic increase in AF keepers and numbers of total shots,yet we both agree that the Z9 is still a bit behind the Sony A,9 ii ,( we don't have a A1 yet) and Canon R5 ( and the R5 is about 1800 dollar's less while using a sensor that isn't BSI)
    It's clearly Nikons best AF body, but now we're also experiencing the same HSS problems that we've been reading about on one forum by multiple users and we're hoping for a fix or we'll be forced to sell it.
    All in all,even he admits that stubborn brand loyalty may have really hurt us and he missed out on several years of the other brands advantages

    Just my 2 cents on adapted lenses with the z9:
    Z9 with my 500mm PF works like a charm, although its adapted.
    the other Z cameras struggled to drive the autofocus fast enough, but that is not the case with the Z9.
    I havent really tried a lot of other/older nikon glass though, maybe older lenses are still slower when adapted.
    On the other hand, at least here in Germany you will have a hard time to try to buy either the z9 or the R3 right now. Basically neither of them is available in stores.
    The A1 is at least "purchaseable" aka in stock.

    Switched to Sony a few years ago with the great A7iii migration a lot of users did. I have almost moved to the R5 a couple of times, the A1 is just a bit too expensive for me to justify however the reason I stood and stick don’t, Is that E mount and the incredible lens selection. Glass is so vital, so I stick with the system that offers me the most. Canon, open up that RF mount, do the right thing. You’re losing customers that might but 3rd party today, but go L mount in the future. I’ve started with samyangs and Tamron, upgraded most to Sigma Art and soon, fingers crossed if business goes well there will be my first GM in the line up this year.

I tend to think about Nikon, then Canon and then Sony. For me Nikon since years ago have the upper hand in image quality, near perfect in dynamic range, definition, colors, contrast, etc, Canon have its colors and a punchy less digital quality, and Sony is ok, but need more post processing work to get an appealing image

    • @BobN54
      @BobN54 2 года назад

      The difference is that you get 2/3 stop more exposure with 64 ISO. ISO itself has little effect on noise. What has the effect is that the ISO setting determines which exposure you meter thinks is 'correct', so you get more exposure if you use a lower ISO. By and large ISO isn't 'subjective', most camera manufacturers follow the ISO standards closely, it's just that many people are misinformed about what ISO actually is.
