      I am a hobbyist that mostly shoots on hikes, I have had the R5 since release and have nothing but good things to say about it. Jared is absolutely correct that landscapes are beautiful on this camera and I have had a few printed on acrylic and metal large format pictures, they are stunning and it does not disappoint the pixel peepers. The video is borderline unusable because of the rolling shutter unless you basically have no movement. I don't really record on it so its not a issue for me.

      I have the Z8 but have been using the z6ii for a year. I love the z6ii. I do not love the z8 yet. The AF is great but it makes composition easier rather than improving my keeper rate when it comes to static subjects (wildlife). Far better for birds in flight though...... Interesting comparison. In summary all very capable and a great choice. If you have any material investment in any one ecosystem then that's probably the best choice for you. All brands will likely continue to improve as they fight to outdo each other. If one or more brands died, then rapid (expensive) R&D would slow down or potentially even cease. As end users we all benefit from competition.
    I used to be a Nikon user (28 yrs) but sold 6 bodies and 15+ lenses at time of lackluster Z6 launch and invested heavily in Sony system. No regrets.
    I once had a low grade Canon too, pocket size (ish) Power zoom Z10 (or something like that - maybe got name wrong). But it wasn't much good so sold and moved on. Only bought as N were 'dragging their feet' on development and didn't listen well to consumers. I also feel Canon don't want to over deliver in their attempts to segment the market. Whilst Sony were all about listening, playing 'catch up' then innovating and ultimately redefining the 'serious' photography market over past decade ever since launch of a7.
    On glass all are good, but for native mirrorless then Sony has no equal. Sure all have one or two outstanding optics and most of each range is arguably good enough in real world use. But N is still playing catch up. C dropped the ball excluding third party options. S meanwhile has easily the best choice (eg more wide options than all others combined). Also in mkii GM glass, their 'trinity' zoom set is arguably the smallest, sharpest, lightest and best in class. It sure (easily) beats my old F Nikkors (pretty good in their day).
    Doubtless 'fan boys' (and maybe girls) will disagree. Ultimately it doesn't matter as all the cameras and available glass are more than good enough. The limiting factor is the nut about 6 inches behind the lens!

    Missed a very notable spec when talking about viewfinders/LCDs. The Z8 has blackout-free (pause-free) shooting. No blackouts and no slideshows when shooting in burst modes. IMO this was huge for me when I first saw it on the Z9 and I'm happy to see it on the Z8 as well. It's a completely new and kind of surreal experience when shooting stills.

    • @randyredding3629
      @randyredding3629 Год назад +14

      I’m with you Joe. A really big feature of Nikon Z8/Z9. Absolutely no blackout that I didn’t even notice shooting my D850. Results, in real time bird inflight view, which is a game changer in getting the shot. No more having the bird flying out of my shot because of the lag (unless I’m not fast enough). Also, the no lag start up that Jerod mention. I’ve gotten so many key moment shots because of this.

    • @brandonklemets2958
      @brandonklemets2958 Год назад +4

      There is a single fast frame of blackout when shooting with automatic flicker detection. The camera will take the smallest pause to sync with the flicker rate and then continue the blackout free shooting. Its negligible but confused me as to why my Z8 was doing a single black frame every burst and I had to dig through menus till it stopped.

      So true. Switching to the Z9 from the D5/D6 was so much easier given the "near optical" quality of the EVF. So much is made of its lower resolution as compared to the R3 and the A1 (and others) but to me it looks very similar to an OVF.

    I know you have a bug up your heiny about Nikon. That said I've owned the R5 and A7RV in the last year. All I can say is the Z9 I'm currently working with is legions beyond those other 2. Not only does it beat their pants off in regards to properly set up focus methods (which so many seem to miss losing out on the ultimate performance of the Z8-Z9) but the overall image quality regarding artifact free detail and especially color! (and you KNOW this Fro from having used Nikon's before) rules. The EVF was perhaps the most surprising element I ran across. I was under the mistaken impression my former A7RV's EVF was the finest......not even close to the results off an Z8/Z9. The Sony has grain and moire which is annoying as heck let alone drops resolution on shooting. The dynamic range, ability to cope with very bright scenes on the Z9 is other worldly by comparing to those others. Build quality is also on another plane. So I'll leave it at that. And oh yeah, I'm a professional whose shot weddings, portraits, events and real estate over the last 25 years. So I"m no amateur hack saying all of this.

    Since the Z8 is pretty much identical cu Z9 in terms of auto-focus, to have it against the R5 and A7R5 and to say that the R5 and A7R5 and both tied but BETTER than the Z8 on the AF department... is freaking hilarious!
    I know Fro has a vendetta for Nikon but come on... this is getting disgusting.
    On the video front - hey the Z8 absolutely BLOWS the other 2 cameras in terms of specs, but ... wait, let's see now, come on - find something - Ohhhhh it doesn't have a digital hot-shoe, that's very unfortunate 🤣🤣

    i have a z8 and one thing that i don't like is the lack of shutter. there's something about taking a hand held shot at say 1/2 sec with a mechanical shutter of say a z6/7 that you can feel when the shot its done. on the z8 it just makes a noise from the speaker, so its a bit hard to shoot with instinct. Might be something that doesn't make sense unless you experience it.
    other than that the z8 beats the others hands down. i found it interesting some of the winning points were overlooked in this review

    You're right about the Z8 files vs R5. Not sure if Canon actually applies a small amount of sharpening but the Z8 files CAN be as clean as the Canon's. It takes 1 minute in Resolve to do so, but it doesnt change the fact that right out of camera the Canon's are a tad better.

I migrated from canon to sony because I felt like the A7RIII was the best bang for my buck and no other camera in that price range offered the porformance or all of the features I was looking for at the time of purchase. I have no regrets making the switch but Nikon is really closing the gap and catching up to sony and canon. I think the Z8 wins this comparison for now but sony has been kind of revolutionary in terms of tech and features and I can't wait to see what they bring to the table in the future. The Nikon Z mount allows you to use Sony E mount lenses with a Megadap ETZ21 PRO adapter that adds only about 1/16 inch to the length of mounted lenses and allows the lenses to work perfectly with no real degradation in features or performance. I use the Sony 70-200 2.8 GMII, 24-105 4.0 G, and 12-24 4.0 G lenses on my Z9, as well as a Zeiss Batis 135 2.8 (Emount) and they work perfectly - at least as well as on my Sony a7Riii. In some respects this video is a bit academic. These are all advanced cameras for serious enthusiasts or professional users, who in 95+% of cases will have prior brand experience and one or more lenses. As such they are already committed to one ecosystem..... be it C, N or S. So effectively their choice is made (unless contemplating serious loss on moving to a diff brand/ecosystem).
    Also fan boys can/will debate the respective merits, whilst real photographers just get out and shoot. Good pics can be made with any of these cameras..... and most of their lesser siblings.
    It's analgous to debating whether a Porche, Ferrari or Lamborghini is best for the 'grocery run'. If you are a new 'learner' then arguably none is best. Whilst better, more affordable, options, or used, will be a much better fit for your needs.

    As one who shoots a fair amount in very dark light, including stars at night, Sony has a feature the others do not, called “Bright Display.” It accumulates light from the sensor to “see in the dark” and allows framing night scenes like the Milky Way and Manually focusing on stars in pitch darkness. That, and gorgeous 60 megapixel landscapes are the main reason I went with the Sony A7RV. That said, I’ve been shooting Sony for 15 years so the real choice for me was the A7RV or the A1.

    I bought a R5 when they first came out and have enjoyed it since. Glass was harder to come by at that point but through the years I have amassed a decent amount of RF lenses and some adapted EF glass that just look amazing. Now vested in a lens mount my choice is simple and in fact I double down with an R7 that my 100-500 lives on making one very nice wildlife lens without the softening of teleconverters. I guess it comes down to glass as camera bodies come and go, glass tends to stay in your kit. I do remember a time when the Fro was very much a Sony fan boy and has moved over time towards Canon with time and long ago he was all Nikon. If I had to start over I am not sure what I would go for, all three make some very nice systems and can produce beautiful images. Something to consider is the health of the company. For Sony the camera division is a very small element and almost a curiosity and it could be dropped with very little thought form Sony. Nikon is late to some of the major technological shifts in industry putting them very much behind. Canon is an imaging company and as such is all in. I think I made the right decision and very much enjoy the experience that the R5 gives.

Surely I think the R6 mk ii could beat out the z9/Z8 due to dual pixel AF technology and AI focus, but nikon lately has produced stunning lenses for z mount and Z8 is a very ergonomic body with a stacked sensor which is very important for sports photography. Comparing telephoto lenses, Nikon's latest 180-600mm f5.6-6.3 is a far superior affordable super telephoto than RF 100-500 or even the Sony 200-600 both in terms of aperture and range. This has to be winning for Nikon

    Checkmark to Z mount. Shortest flange, biggest opening, actually existing adapters from Sony-E to Nikon-Z, theoretically everything can be adapted on Nikon Z, wont work other way around. There might be RF to E and RF to Z, but Z cant be adapted to other and E cant be adapted to RF. (also mentioning that you can adapt EF mount to RF and F-mount to Z without also mentioning adapting Sony-A to Sony-E isnt really fair, makes it look as if Sony is missing out something. They are not).

    I still stuck with Sony System is because of lens choices. Yes people might argue that with such a body like A7RV, GM is the way to go as other brands with their first party lenses.
    The thing is Sony embrace adapted lenses for MF lenses. Canon/Nikon too with Sigma MC-11. Not perfect but it does work, kinda.
    Voitlanger, Zeiss, Viltrox, Samyang, Sigma, Tamron, TTArtisan and the list goes on.
    Just with so much more choices imo and availability of those glass in my region made me stay on. Recently snagged up a set of new Loxia at such a bargain too. Such lenses are not currently avaliable with full support like metering, etc. Magnified Zoom, etc. Sony makes MF fun imo.
    Though I don't really like Sony colour tbh, lots of post work is needed but the recent A7RV renders the colours beautifully imo. Still prefer Lumix though hahaha.

    For me the case is clear: Nikon Z8
    Back when i bought my current camera, i took the Z7 in my hands and then the D850. The D850 just fits the hands really good, which i feel is a big plus for long days out shooting wildlife.
    So just because of size that is a plus point for the Z8 in my book.
    Then the flicker free viewfinder and no mechanical shutter. If you can read out the sensors that fast, why should i carry a mechanical shutter? Then i prefer to have better ergonomics.
    The D850 is also basically instantly ready to take pictures. And i had it happen multiple times that i thought i'm gonna walk here or there early in the morning and left the camera shut off to save battery but then see e.g. a roe deer or a fox somewhere i didn't expect it. So I only got the shot because the camera was ready instantly.
