Act 2 of the musical is sometimes criticized for going too rapidly and being essentially a retelling of The Wizard of Oz from multiple perspectives. If they can expand on that scene, it may be enough to justify breaking the film in two.

@fday1964 Ooooor... They could have waited to start advertising, and release the 2 movies a month apart from each other so that way you wouldn't need to buy 2 movie tickets in the same month or sit through a 6 hour movie. That would also allow part 1 to be fresher in people's heads. Casual movie goers will forget about this movie and may not even go to see the second one if they don't remember the first. Idk I'm not a marketing or business expert, but I feel like it would give people something to look forward to in the short term and make more money by retaining audience attention.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Totally valid to not like they split into part 1 and part 2 but I think once they were committed to keeping every song, it was truly the only way. 1:1 putting a musical into a movie just can’t work. You need more establishing shots, musical book scenes are always so short and need to be buffed out in a movie to not feel rushed. Especially since criticism of the wicked stage show is that the book scenes are already rushed as it is in Act 2.

This was a movie that catered itself to being two parts tbh. The first and second acts of the broadway show are very distinct with major time jumps, separating them out makes more sense in giving the plot and characters more depth while letting the notoriously fast paced 2nd act slow down a bit, not feeling a need to rush over all the plot points in The Wizard of Oz, when the 2nd act primarily takes place

Agreed with everything here except the part one/part two breakup. Being an adaptation from Broadway, Broadway plays always have an intermission halfway through. Without expecting that, I can understand why this would be foreign and potentially disappointing. After the broadway intermission, that takes usually 15 minutes or so, you can continue the story and finish it by the end of the night. We can’t do that here until the second portion is released.
Go see it, as a Broadway fan, I really appreciated this film.

So hopefully, the same magic it had in the stage for 20 years would rub off in the movie.

This movie is really the act one of the play bit by bit but the songs are more well realized and dynamic. The only real padding or expansion per say it's Elphaba's childhood which are very short scenes, the Madam Morrible's spell lessons which are also very short and the subplot of the animals is expanded upon and given much needed time on top of new scenes entirely. I think the animals subplot will take center stage in the second movie because the play somewhat overlook it in act II but it's a big part of the book and I think they'll bring proper closure in movie part II. But that's pretty much it.

    The amount of people commenting..
"I know nothing about the book or the musical and I haven't seen the movie yet.. but ,It doesn't need to be 2 parts"... is crazy to me. The concept that a person can know nothing at all about a topic but still feel they can have , and post an opinion on what the topic should or shouldn't be... is.. astounding to me.
That's like me saying.. "I've never seen a basketball game and know nothing about the sport... but I heard they have some net just hanging in the air. They shouldn't need a net".
Having an opinion on something you know nothing about... is... astonishing. And yet... so many people seem to do just that. Why not save your opinion and comment for once you've seen the movie... or musical.. or read the book? Then you'll have some substantial knowledge to give merit to your thoughts... but I guess these are the same people saying "I didn't know it was 2 parts" even though they made a huge announcement about it over a year ago...I guess the saying is true.. most people don't think.. they just talk. Or in this case.. post/ comment. 🤔🤦🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️😂😅😅

They're not like oh there's this thing called the internet, let me look this upcoming movie up, because I feel like you had to read about wicked for less than 5 minutes to figure out it was two movies. For me like I love wicked, I saw it in 2003, and most of the memorable stuff musically is in Act 1, which tells you that Act 2 needs more love than to just be crammed into a film with act 1

Musicals are one of my fav genres in film so I watch A LOT of old musicals since they make less & less of them with each passing decade since the 1970's. Then after seeing La La Land in 2016 I said I would never again trust Hollywood to make a real musical since they did such a great job at advertising the most unmusical musical I've ever seen as a big romantic musical. Then a year later comes The Greatest Showman which IMO is one of the GREATEST musicals of all time! Right up there with The Sound of Music & Singing in the Rain. I didn't have high hopes for Wicked especially with who they chose as the 2 main stars which IMO are nowhere near as talented as Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, but after this review I will give it a try. Thanks Jeremy! :)

As a big fan of the musical having seen it on Broadway people should know that just like when you go to live theatre you should respect the medium. If you want to sing along come back when they do that, wait until it's at home, or listen to the soundtrack.

It's not as bad as most. It's closer to Empire Strikes Back than Deathly Hallows pt 1. I think I liked the pacing better than Dune 1 though that could just be because I didn't know the story by heart. It never drags, and I thought it felt shorter than it was. Still, it's harming the storytelling imo, because the high concept stuff that made me as a general media nerd really take notice is at the end of the play. Then again, one could say the same for Empire and Jedi. The main thing the split means is that they can avoid cutting anything while letting scenes breathe, and without leaning on some of the storytelling conventions used to abbreviate scenes for pacing in stage plays. And they inserted an extra fan service scene with the actors who first played the two witches, but that 5 minutes and supplies some backstory and worldbuilding.

I do love the Wizard Of Oz movie 1939. But my all time favorite musical movie is the 1965 classic The Sound Of Music. One of the best musicals ever in movie history. My parents and I have no interest in watching anything coming from Hollywood anymore. Right now the real and actual entertainment and fun is movies made by Japan, South Korea, Angel Studios, other Indie movie companies, or we will just be picking and choosing on which movies that we will be watching.

First off, this sponsorship sounds really cool! Can’t wait to check it out. And second, thank you for giving Jonathan Bailey love!

He’s been sponsored by Displate before and we got one because of it. It’s so worth it. I love posters but protecting the flimsy paper or having to pay to get them framed is so annoying.

For me anymore. Even when Part 1 is good. I have to wait until Part 2 to judge it entirely.
Because we all know how The Last Jedi fucked that all up.

As a dude who has a mixed relationship with musicals and knew NOTHING about this, I saw this last night and shockingly loved it

You knew nothing about this? You never saw any of the slew of advertisements they made?

@LuznoLindo Well, yeah, of course but I had no idea it was based on an original musical. I just thought it was another one of the many half-assed spin-offs Hollywood has attempted to profit off of.

Return to Oz is💯 my favorite Oz movie. It combines two of my favorite Oz books into a single creepy movie without needing to be a musical. And the amazing Fairuza Balk as Dorothy was perfection,

Director Jon M. Chu is no stranger to musicals. With each film installment, he is honing his music and movie-making craft. From Justin Bieber: Never Say Never to Crazy Rich Asians, he may become a new legend as a musical director.

Crazy Rich Asians isn't a musical and Bieber? Really? Cho is useless.

@williammccormick984 Chu has made more films than those two. Most of his works explore music and dance, from the TV series Legions of Extraordinary Dancers (LXD) to the Step Up film series. Before Wicked, he also worked on another stage adaptation, In The Heights. His works have garnered significant acclaim, reviews, and even box office which is all that truly matters.
