- I guess I went with the roman numerals in the title. BUT, Ridley Scott brings us a sequel to the classic revenge epic GLADIATOR! Does the sequel live up, justify its existence, or at the very least leave the audience feeling entertained? Here's my review for GLADIATOR 2!

The best thing about Gladiator II is that my local theater showed one screening of Gladiator last month. It was my first time seeing it in theater again since 2000. It was fantastic.
Was hoping mine would do that, too. Was the only reason I was kinda hyped for this movie. Sadly they didn't and I sure as heck won't watch this abomination in the theater.

I did a double feature with my girlfriend and maybe watching wicked first affected my impression but it was quite good but Ridley has done a masterpiece every decade but gladiator 2 is not his 2020s masterpiece...

To be honest, there was absolutely no need for a sequel. It began and ended flawlessly. It was a masterpiece.

When Maximus came back from the dead and yelled "The real friends are the gladiators we witnessed along the way", I was truly moved. 10/10 movie
it was weird when Commodus was resurrected and yelled "I AM THE ROMANS", though.

yes because russell was the only maximus, lucius was not the right lucius, he did not know the master of silence, like russell did.... they chose the wrong characters to play the roles..... denzel did great but his image did not fit roman empire, image of lucius did not even look anything like maximus' child as it should have been, his hairline is too back and he could not master the power of silence like russell did.. also doesn't that mean that the second one basically means maximus was unfaithful to his wife, the wife he loved more than anything , the one he kept fantasizing of meeting in heaven with... the whole gladiator was based around his love for his wife.. which means in second he was unfaithful and had cheated on her by having lucius, so lucius was conceived by two unfaithful parents out of wedlock.. anyways I just seen second one and posted my instant reaction to the movie on my channel, would love to hear your thoughts, review and feedback

Classicist here: Regarding the Colosseum naval battle thing, just for anyone who’s interested as lots of people seem to be talking about it online. Yes they did really flood the arena for naval battle re-enactments…but only for the first ten or so years of it being opened (c. 80CE). When they then dug out the underneath of it to hold gladiators, animals etc they obviously stopped doing naval battles as they couldn’t flood it anymore as the underneath was hollow and being used. You can still see today, and go down into, these underground chambers. We see the underneath of the Colosseum in the first movie, and see animals being released to the upper floor from there, which is set in 180CE. So with this sequel being set around 200CE, and after having seen on screen the underneath of the Colosseum in the first one, we can confidently say they wouldn’t have had naval battles at that time, and it contradicts what we see in the first movie.
Does this ultimately matter? Nah. Can it still be a good movie? Of course. The first one got things “wrong” and changed things and it was a masterpiece.
Just thought I’d chime in for anyone who likes little bits of trivia like that. 😊

The first film had one of the best movie heroes in Maximus and one of the best villains in Commodus, who was the perfect foil to the macho figure of Russell Crowe.
Yeah, even the extended Gladiator film made him look more unhinged as if he was Arthur Fleck in ancient Rome.

Even for unnecessary sequels, always judge every movie by its own merits. It did not disgrace the first movie in any way and was pretty entertaining with a solid story and characters, there’s no reason to hate on the movie unless you’re addicted to rage.

I actually had a very good time with Gladiator 2! It may not have had the emotional impact of the original, but there was no shortage of interesting characters and entertainment value. While the story did at times did show some similarity to the first film in terms of structure and beats, it wasn't any less gripping. Ending was kinda rushed and I wouldn't have minded expanding the length of the film by about 10 to 15 minutes to flesh out a few more characters because the movie did a great job at keeping me engaged. Production design was spectacular, action was shot well, great performances across the board. A solid effort from Ridley Scott. I'd go for 7.5 to 8 out of 10.
thank you. I do not understand the hate. for 2024 standards it was better than I had expected and it did not tarnish the legacy of Gladiator. People are treating this as if it were Joker 2.

I feel like some of the trashing of this film is coming off as pretentious, almost as if those doing it want to make a show of how great their taste in movies is by going all like "look at me! Look how sophisticated I am for loving the sacred original Gladiator and shitting on the sequel that I don't think should've been made! Please give me likes!" Joker 2 was genuinely not good and both critics and audiences agree, but there is plenty to like about Gladiator 2. I went in expecting something average but came out pleasantly surprised. Some people are just so jaded.

Someone did a video essay pointing out that was purposeful because Gladiator had just re-elevated sword and sandal epics for its time, so to resurrect the pirate genre, PotC tried to make their period piece more epic feeling by imitating Gladiator's soundtrack. They even tried to get Hanz Zimmer, but he was committed to The Last Samurai, so he gave them several of his composer apprentices.
There’s a wild 🤫 history behind how they got the score for _Pirates of the Carribbean_ … essentially it is Hans Zimmer’s, but he had to rubber stamp it as someone else’s

Hearing “Big shoes to fill” that many times had me flash back to the first time Sideshow Bob framed Krusty.
Listened to no reviews or any commentary building up to this one to not give me a bias beforehand, and this clearly seems to be an unpopular opinion, don’t care what anyone says, I enjoyed nearly as much as the original.
The politics and manipulation and different angles was a dynamic I appreciated a lot in this one, while the first one was the perfect revenge story, it was very linear. I thought the twists in this one were fun and I wasn’t sure where it was going next. No it wasn’t realistic at every point, but I don’t judge a movie on its realism, I judge it if I am in the words of Maximus, entertained. And I was entertained
I also didn't watch any reviews beforehand, and I fully agree! Kind of surprised to see not more people found it entertaining. Was it as great as the first movie? Not at all. But it was entertaining and exciting. I think people are way too harsh on this.

Finally a normal person lol everyone is hating just for the sake of hating. If anything people should at least acknowledge how well shot it was, sound design was perfect too. Also fight choreography was some of the best in recent memory
I liked it too. **SPOILER** the stand-off between Acacius and Lucius was a brilliant twist. I thought Pedro Pascal did a superb job.

Ridley fkd up quite a few things in his later years. If he doesn't drop the ball he misses the point completely. Prometheus should off been EPIC. And it is, if you DO... NOT... THINK about it, cause then it all falls down.

I often thought that the biggest mistake Ridley Scott did with the first Gladiator movie was when he wasn't a producer of the first movie so when Gladiator won Best Picture, he didn't accept the trophy for himself because he wasn't the producer. I think about this a lot as it was his close chance to get an Oscar trophy if he was the producer like he is with his recent movies. After Gladiator came out, he became a producer in just about every movie he made 😅

@@BadGamerPlays I think it was because a) he was American and b) he had two pictures nominated for Best Picture in the same year. The biggest shock to me was Zimmer not getting the Oscar for the score.
Russel Crowe contributed to shaping the story of the original film and its arguable whether even with him in it the original would have become such an enduring classic if he hadn't.

You summed up my feelings about the movie very well, living in the first’s shadow and so many references, as if anyone who would watch this would not know the first one. Then the sharks were too over the top. Sharks don’t eat people.

I mean, Hans Zimmer really did write the same theme for two different movies in a span of 3 years, and thought we wouldn't notice
It sounds much more epic and fits much more in Pirates though
What happened behind the scenes is that Hans Zimmer was called in to help Klaus Badelt out with the score for Pirates. He wrote the whole score in one single day, and asked for Badelt to get full credit for the score. So it's no wonder Hans reused some cues.

You will not see the big shoes on tv, must be IMAX. OKAY?
That's what I'm recommending to my friends. I just left the cinema and everything in the film felt pointless. like it happens because it happens. Not even because it needs to for the plot. it just feels like my dreams where there's a series of events vaguely linked to eachother. No real emotion behind any actions. The only believable performance in the whole film was from the twins, and they were surrounded by such dead expressions from the rest of the cast that it just feels out of place.
Motivations within the film are also superfluous and changed from scene to scene, characters just accept random events at face value, basically shrug and go "Oh, that happened? Ok."
In the 1st film the Maximus' son was literally CRUCIFIED. In the sequel someone just kinda dies in a situation where it was literally the expected outcome, he freaks out for a second, then he goes "Huh, guess I need to get revenge."
@@Aubreysangel666not all sequels are bad. Top Gun Sequel almost 30 years later was great. Gladiator 2 was solid and even Furiosa was well-received even it if didn’t perform well
So cool that they made this movie. Now I cant wait for some other legendary remakes, mostly "Donnie Brasco 2: Forget about it!" and "Apocalypse today: Smell of uranium in the morning."

4:36 I recently heard my brother watching something, I swear I heard the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, but was surprised to see he was watching Gladiator. The music is almost 1:1
Kind of like iron man and pacific rim.
You'll hear the same theme in Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. It's kind of a "prototype" version but it's there. Dude loved that theme for a few years.

I saw a preview with rap music and I completely checked out
Yeah, the response was so bad to that one that they shortly thereafter cut a new trailer with more classic Gladiator themed music to give it the 'historical epic' vibe back.
I was at a Minnesota Vikings season opener at the old metro-dome when before the kickoff they played an awful clip of rap music to get the fans fired up. When the clip ended it was complete silence, everyone looked around like “ what did we just hear?” That was the first and only time I herd that out of place noise.

One of the trailers from the first Gladiator had kid rock music. I remember seeing it on TV way back in the day.
Few months ago I was watching a virtual tour of the Coliseum and they showed the underground canals that were used to flood the floor. I had no clue they actually had water in there too. The Coliseum must have been WILD to see back in those times.

as far as I know it was very expensive and didnt last long. When they added some underground quarters and lifts it wasn't possible any longer.
But I'm reciting from memory (on my daily routine of thinking about the roman empire, of course).
My favorite part was when Maximus returned and said, "What we do in Vegas, stays in Vegas."

Gladiator is one of the greatest films ever made. It was a fools errand to try and make a sequel unless you're bringing a top tear script and execution. I suspect that the second movie will be okay but not nearly as good as the first & the main justification for its existence will be the money not the artistic value.
The theatrical version on Gladiator (1) is much, much better than the extended version, which makes me mildly disappointed that most younger people only see the extended version, where Commodus is so over the top that he is too exaggerated and stupid to be human...

Yo, absolutely agree. I was thinking the same after watching a few reactors watch the first one.
For example, he goes home, but has to train others in his town to fight when Rome comes a-knocking. Or anyone else. My history is a bit fuzzy on Roman times (more an ancient Greece era guy), so perhaps its just raiders or mercs. In any case, he takes what Max taught them to teach his own people: how to fight like legionaires! Perhaps even combine it with their own fighting style.
You have a poc in a lead role, maybe a south asian or turk as a bbeg (thinking most likely antag groups). Djmon's character isn't a gary stu, and in many ways a true inheritor of max who was a farmer himself, pressed into service.
It checks hollyweird's boxes while also, at least in capable hands, carrying on the spirit of the first without *being* a rehash of the first one.
Unfortunately, it looks like they made the same film with a bigger CG budget. So typical hollywood sequel nonsense. Hell, could have had Denzel in it too!

That would've been much better. Still unnecessary (because Gladiator never warranted a sequel), but better than "Hey, let's retcon the first movie by making Lucius Maximus' son & retell the exact same story only worse."
He was going to be in the film but had to drop out due to scheduling issues.
@@DFRetha I re-watched the first film a few days ago and while it's not said out loud, it is strongly implied that Lucius is Maximus's son as Maximus was 'close to his mother years ago' which gives her motivation to try and help him out.
@@jamesatkinsonja I feel the opposite, I've seen the first movie numerous times along the years and I never felt they implied Lucius to be his son, just that Lucilla and Maximus had an affair when they were young and that she still had strong feelings for him, but they both had found new families.
I just did a tour of the coliseum and the tour guide told us there is no evidence the arena was ever filled with water for sea battle scenes. It was not waterproof.

Theoretically, if the Coliseum did have naumachiae, they would have been held in its early years before Domitian - long before Caracalla & Geta. Then again, its Hollywood, so creative liberties are the expectation.

I gave this a 6/10. It wasn't bad but I wasn't amazed. It was entertaining for a moment but felt the story was lacking. Action wasn't bad. Acting was alright. Denzel was probably the best actor there.
Just give us a trilogy:
2nd Punic Wars... do you need much more spectacle?
- 1 - Hannible rises: youth, raising his army, over the Alps, attacking Italy
- 2 - Rome responds: mustering, Fabian tactics, character introductions, Scipio's departure to Spain, Italy being crushed at Cannae
- 3 - End of the Punic Wars: Victory in Spain, Hannibal's conquest of Italy, Scipio's victories, finale in Africa

he is a good director, but he could never tell a good script from a bad one. he got lucky with alien, blade runner and gladiator, but then you see the alien prequels and napoleon and... yeah
Ridley Scott is a legend and still got it. But not every movie is a box office hit. He's directed some true masterpiece that's still good even today.

We rarely get Top Gun Maverick which tops the previous movie but it doesn't always have to be. All I wanted from Gladiator 2 is a good movie and it seems we got just that which I'm fine with and I can't wait to watch it.
That has Tom Cruise and he really is obsessed with perfection. Ridley Scott not so much. He is much more about how many movies I can make in such a small amount of time? Also I love Paul Mescal but he is no Russell Crowe. He doesn’t have the gravitas.

Pretty hyped for this film. And honestly mounted rhinos and sharks in the Colosseum > historical accuracy
My wife and i adored this movie. We didn't compare it to the original. We received it as another chapter to the story. Very sentimental, and we really enjoyed it. Especially when the original score appeared, "Now we are free." That was awesome. I'm happy that it touched on the first movie, i thought it was really clever.
Did Gladiator NEED a sequel? No. Did we enjoy this new chapter of the story? References and all? Absolutely. 100% going to see it again before it's out of theaters.
I think people’s peeves with this is, it’s a great standalone movie and it should’ve been that. No need to throw the title gladiator in there and no need for it to continue, when it was only going to be compared to the first. Had they selected a different title, then that would’ve been different.
If it really was a continuation and extension of the first, then they dropped the ball with NOT brining the original child that came out in the first in this one. for the sake of continuity and continuing the story in a different way.
