    I photographed Men's LAX and a Philadelphia Union Soccer game after filming this video....and I'm even more sold on it's AF capabilities. This $1,500 R8 has superior AF capabilities than the Nikon Z9. It just works, without a fight. No, Nikon shooters wont like these facts. They will tell me I don't know how to set the Z9 up, and that it's human error, it's not. I know what I'm doing, and so do the Pro Z9 shooters I speak with at events. Right out of the box, it just works.

      Hey Jared! I own a Z9 and I'll be truly honest! you are right, Now, I don't have hands on the R8 just yet but from only the "Tracking Standpoint" what I saw in this video is mindblowing! Nikon Z9 is nowhere close to it.. Let me be clear with it... This is only regarding the subject detection and tracking capabilities. Hopefully Nikon fixes it. The af is good, but I often need to switch to dynamic on it and go "Dslr Style" quiet often

    I’m a hobbyist photographer who travels often enough. I sold my Nikon gear 5 years ago and want to get back into it. I’ve been researching on whether to go Canon or Sony. I’m leaning to Canon because I like the ergonomics and ease of use. I don’t plan to go professional and I don’t have a strong negative opinion on the RF-EF adapters.
    Body budget is around $1300 so that puts me around the R8 or A7III. There’s a lot of Canon/Sony switchers on RUclips but it feels like an iPhone vs Android for me.
    I’m looking to only get 4 lenses on either system:
    50mm
    85mm
    70-200mm
    24-70mm
    Optional 18-35mm.
    This video just tipped me over to Canon

    FYI on lax sticks. That's the shutter. Lax sticks don't ever flex like that on a shot. I still use mechanical shutter on my R6 when shooting lax for that reason. The biggest challenge I've had with the eye AF autofocus has been it's ability to discern which player I want when taking high traffic shots. I've stayed using the traditional spot focus so I can be specific in telling the camera which person to start with. I look forward to trying the improved capabilities this spring season

    • @davidmpoliveira1
      @davidmpoliveira1 Год назад +1

      I have my R6 set-up to start eye AF at the location the spot/central point AF is set to, and I have a 2nd back focus button for eye AF with servo AF, so then I just point my camera to the person I want to focus on, and start continuous eye AF. It's mostly focus and recomposing, I'm using the central AF point to tell the camera who I want to focus on. Jared did that on this video as well.
      While this is not perfect, it does help, most of the time, when there are multiple subjects in the frame.

    It is truely amazing that the only that you appear to focus on is autofocus, that's it. Every camera..... "How sticky is the autofocus?"........ "How quickly does the AF acquire?" you seem to avoid the very obvious questions: How eye-bleedingly expensive is RF glass? I mean why would you use an adapted lens for the lacrosse? Why not use the $13000 RF version? Yep $13k! And to be honest, you could put the EF 600 in front of a box brownie and you'd get great shots. You used possibly one of the best telephotos in the world, not the usual lenses that most of us have.
    How about talking about the very few lenses that are available on the RF mount? How there is not competition on the RF mount, so Canon will keep rinsing it's customers.
    We could talk about the tiny buffer that the R8 has (much like the R7), your experience of it does match others. So when you are shoot continuous RAW, how quickly does that fill? How long does it take to clear? So many unanswered questions......................................................Why would anyone buy a camera and allow the manufacturer to decide what glass you can use? It's a licence to rinse.
    At the end of the day the R8 is the poor man's R6 Mk2. Poor weather sealing and average build quality. Slower reading sensor, so expect plenty of rolling shutter (might not see much in basketball but baseball?), one card slot and no IBIS (great if you are a pro but for the average photographer....). It's got it's place but you still need RF glass. If you are happy with Canon dictating what you do, that's fine, after all, you are only a paying customer.

But the all around capability of this camera, whether it be landscapes, portraits, air shows, sports, astrophotography... I think this body will be able to handle them all. I'm truly excited. Jared, you were shooting at 1/2500sec on some shots. Why wouldn't a mechanical shutter give you a "rolling shutter" effect?
    Remember that at high speeds you are shooting through a moving slit. Logically the moving subject is in a different place as that slit moves across the sensor.
    Somebody explain to me why a mechanical shutter doesn't give rolling shutter effect, on moving subjects, at high shutter speeds.

  • @mcmillanvideos
    @mcmillanvideos Год назад

    I compared the R6 (not II) to the R8 I own in the store and the R6 just focuses faster, and more definitively. There is no guessing in the R6. I've played around with all sorts of settings and cannot get it to match. Also, there are more useful controls in the R6 menu than the R8. And the viewfinder is better. The R6 is a nice step up from the R8... I read a lot of your reviews (and others) and it makes it seem like the R8 is just as good as higher end models when you compare them. In the real world, using the latest copies on the market, there is a noticeable difference to me. I just got an RF100 2.8L and it's ok, but it misses focus a lot. I'll keep messing with settings (I've watched yours and others' videos on all the settings.)

    ill say this again . Nikon should not compete for af speed at this time. I think Nikon has to concentrate on Af Precision and accuracy. The Z9 is a fast camera, no doubt but not at the expense of af accuracy. When the Z8 comes out let it be able to nail images in focus and sharp. Let it be the camera that will shoot portraits and models and nail the af of the eye and not the lashes. Let the z8 speak for itself. The Z9 firmware can continuously be tweaked to keep up with the jonses. After the Z8 this is Where Nikon has to separate itself from EVERYONE by releasing the Z90/ Z900 APSc camera with Superior Af that will exceed what the Z9 offers currently. It has to kill all the noise for wildlife tracking and fast action. The noise output has to be superior with a nothing less than 28mp sensor. I truly believe its the APSc line from Nikon can set the af speed pace while the full frame bodies nail precision and accuracy. After that NIKON drops the ZX (Roman numeral 10) or ZΔ (Delta Greek for 10) or any other symbol for 10. Maybe a Japanese symbol like Z十 meaning Ten.

      Since Nikon seems to become left behind more and more, they are going to develop towards becoming the new PENTAX of this mirrorless decade. Losing market share already. Ending up retreating to serve hobbyists, and to stuff which mostly hobbyists like. Just like Pentax in the DSLR era.
      P.S. I just see a comment by Nikon Z user @airjaff: "Nikon has embarrassingly bad af. They should be ashamed of themselves. I wish I never bought a z7ii".
