IBIS really seems to be about taking photos hand held with non-stabilised lenses. We really need an option to turn it off for video. Not having IBIS is definitely an unintended benefit for the R8 (too bad the battery is a deal breaker). Lens stab really is amazing. The DJI RS3 Mini gimbal is very affordable, I highly recommend it as an image stabiliser for video including vlogs. IBIS effectively shifts the lens center - and the lens correction then seems to be applied incorrectly leading to strange corner warping effects.
As I stated in the video, I won't be able to test every possible situation. Testing both of these cameras at 15mm was a good wide angle test. I hope you got a good sense of the stabilization system in the R8 and how it compares with the R6II. Also, I only have so many lenses to test. Thanks for watching!

I have noticed some issues related to IBIS as well, mostly when shooting with the mechanical shutter. Granted, the mechanical shutter is supposed to cause more shake. However, what happens is that when using it with certain lenses with shutter speeds of 1/200 and less, I get consistently some microshake. The image will look fine as a whole, but zooming in reveals a slightly fuzzy image. Even if I try really hard to eliminate the shake, the image will still be fuzzy. The problem is solved when I raise the shutter speed to 1/250 or switch to the electronic shutter. In the end, I end up disabling completely the stabilisation as I prefer to use the mechanical shutter to better utilise the sensor's dynamic range and color depth. I only enable it at times when shooting in low light after switching to the electronic shutter, or when I am shooting video. Just know before you get disappointed that IBIS is better on paper than it is in real life for stills.
IMO, Canon’s IBIS is a fail. Yes it improves steadiness for lenses without stabilization, but most people who have a camera at an R6M2 and above price point will likely already have lenses that can steady most shots. The growing market demand for ibis was to steady a lot of vlogging woes of shaky footage. And the fact that the wobbles have not been resolved on wide angle lens (which vloggers and videographers want) makes ibis less compelling of a feature. We don’t want to “crop in” our images to get rid of the wobbles. How can cellphone cameras get this right and major cameras can’t?
Yeah, the IBIS for video is garbage compared to the IBIS on the old GH5 or Olympus cameras. I guess it's just something to do with physical dimensions due to the size of a full frame sensor inside a small body.

Thank you Josh for the detailed comparison! Very helpful! Would like to ask for a compact combo of R8 + 16mm F2.8 Assume we have the crop factor of: Digital IS x1.1 Digital IS Enhanced x1.3 APSC crop x1.6 Is it realistic to assume that we can achieve 16mm x1.1 = 17.6mm 16mm x1.3 x1.6 = 33.3mm Which is close to a 16-35 F2.8! Stabilized! Is it practical or there is a catch, like bad IQ at 33.3mm scenario or limitation at certain record setting? Thank you!
I would love a video trying the Panasonic S5IIX stabilization. Some people claim that it can replace a gimbal except for the widest shots. It seems that the latest update eliminates the corners wobble if you uses EIS + IBIS
This was my one worry about getting the R8 and I feel ok with it now because I plan to get lenses with IS, and that really was where the big difference lies. Though I would've liked to see low light testing
Great video, thanks for sharing! Have canon fixed those wobbly corners with a firmware update yet on the r6mkii or is it still like that? Looks like garbage compared to the sony ibis 😬I've been thinking about upgrading from a7sii to the r6mkii but that's a bit of a deal breaker by the looks of it.
IBIS for video blows anyway - those shakes are annoying and when panning it’s not ideal either. Lens stabilisation for lifestyle shots and vlogs is absolutely fine, anything else, like you’ve said - you need a gimbal. Good stuff the R8 is so light for that very reason :) So - don’t sweat the lack of IBIS.
I haven't noticed that but I don't use digital IS very often. I could see how that could happen in APS-C mode where it must be using less than 4K resolution.
Coming back to photography after about ten years away, I last shot a 7D. Everyone’s talking about IBIS. I’m thinking that I managed without it for all the time before, do I need to spend an extra grand for it now? Doubtful. In lens IS just seems great as it is.
it looks like digital stab in R8 does not working at all if lens have IS, but it's turned off. Instead R5C or C70, where digital IS works pretty well. Digital IS in R8 works with non IS lens only, if want JUST digital IS
I don’t think that is true from my testing. You can see how the digital IS performs with the lens stab turned off on the R8. I think the digital stabilization is pretty limited in the R8. The overall stabilization really benefits from having lens stab. The digital stab could also work differently in the R5C and C70 since they use the cinema operating system. Things are often different between the mirrorless video and cinema operating system, like autofocus for example.
@@Josh_Sattin for canon, you can't use digital is only by an is lens as I rememberd, it's true the camera still crops in, but the digital is doesn't work , I tried with my R5C and it's obviously the stablization is not working in your video.
Canon won't let you use only digital stabilization with a stabilized lens, so the shots with no lens IS and digital on the camera still keep everything off and just crop in. Lame that they do that, but that's canon for you lol. Thats why the digital works so much better with lens IS enabled, yet it also works well if you're shooting with an unstabilized lens.
The wobbles are so bad they make me feel sick. Very glad I saw this, gonna pass on the r6 Mark II and go for either the Fuji x-s20 with some nice glass or a Sony a7r5 with a kit lens. Now the r8 does look nice but I feel like If I got the fuji or the Sony I wouldn't feel the need to pick up the r8, like ever. I also wanted to say, I realized near the end that all of these examples with the r8 where with the premium set of lens's for the RF line up, and I have nothing but EF lens's with there version of IS in it, so the more you think about the r8, its nice, its body is priced very well, but the glass is just outrageous, why waste that money. I could literally pick up a x-s20 with premium sets of glass at the same cost of the r8 with just one of those RF len's with IS in it
Thank, you, for the comparaison. Are you sure that you are shooting at 50mm at 6mn30? Because the angle of view looks like more 70mm, or are you in apsc mod? Because In my side with the 50mm f1.8 on my r8, I have less micro jitters than your test with the digital IS and zero micro jitters with digital enhanced…
I appreciated your effort, sir. This helps a lot since I only need a Canon for photography (trip) and video sometimes. I think the R8 is enough. Does anyone have other ideas between these two?
Thanks for this review. This is actually exactly what I was looking for. I’m actually wondering, how is the digital IS in the R8 vs the old RP. Is there any evidence that it’s actually improved?
Thanks Josh, this video was very helpful. Is it possible to test the IBIS on the R6MK2 using EF glass?, im planning to upgrade from my 5d mk3 to RF mount and have a bunch of EF lenses (28,35,50,85,100, etc) but non of those have IS.
So my friend is Peter Gregg and he has the Panasonic S5II using the Sigma EF to L Adapter and his 85mm f/1.2 is out of the world on that camera. Old lenses aren't bad they have character. Cheers!
Does the cropping in enhanced stabilisation effect the image quality? I mean say for example what if I move forward and match the frame with digital IS off then will there be any difference in details between IS on and IS off? Does it actually crop from the footage or just decreases the angle of view?
are there people buying an expensive camera like the R6II to "vlog" ... that is to talk to the camera while walking? I would use a phone or a small camera, as also, what is the point of going through all the complexities of getting a "professional" quality image for a vlog? I would like a camera for gimbal use to shoot moving subjects, and the R8 seems perfect as it is small and light, has a wonderful AF, good image quality .... the problem that you point out is overheating which makes it unreliable and small batteries. I would never shoot with digital stabilisation, and in particular I find horrible the artefacts of the enhanced mode. The R6 ibis is catastrophic in my opinion, and I would never shoot something with an artistic or good quality goal with this IBIS ... if I want something handheld, I would flee from the wobble, and if I want something smooth, I would use the gimbal. So I wonder if I should go with the Sony FX3 even if I dislike the "video" over sharpened look of the image, and much prefer the Canon.
If you’ve tried the iPhone 14 pro and tried to do a selfie video (vlog) you’d realize that it is… very much not ideal. The baked in sharpening/saturation etc that it does makes my face look uhhh unrealistic and brings out features I struggle to find even when using a high magnification mirror. In other words it creates something of a monstrous and fake overly detailed visage. This can be curtailed by holding the camera waaaay far away but then it’s quite unwieldy and defeats the point
I think you need to look at the content being produced by younger people all over RUclips, and the cameras geared toward them (Sony ZV-E1 or Canon powershot V10 for example)
Great video. Does it mean that R6 / R6 MKII - IBIS wont work with the lens with out stabilization like RF 50mm f1.8? I'm having trouble deciding between R8 and R6 MKii. I'm not an expert in anything. I'm now taking vacation photos of my family and kids with a Canon M50. wishe to stepup. unsure about the model I should purchase. I don't use a camera to record videos. Could you please let me know if the R8 with the stabilised lens is sufficient or if I should spend more and acquire the R6 Mkii?
The IBIS will work with any lens (if the lens has stab or not). It will work better if the lens has stab too though. Here is a video that outlines R8 vs R6II: ruclips.net/video/UL8TzLal5t4/видео.html
How does lens lens stabilization compare to IBIS when looking at full body movement for shooting video, besides walking? Is lens stabilization good enough to achieve steady footage when the entire body is moving, like underwater during a dive? I'm really interested in using the R8 as my next underwater camera (coming from a gopro). Is lens stabilization good enough when trying to stay as still as possible underwater, while being moved by the current?
@@Josh_Sattin I wouldn't recommend going underwater without the Protective gear to safeguard the camera. My biggest worry would be ALLIGATORS & SNAKES! Cheers!
Hey Josh, as someone who already owns a gimbal (RSC2), would that eliminate the need to upgrade to R6 territory? I'm debating either getting R8, as my first full frame, or waiting to get something like the R6ii. Anything would be an upgrade since I currently use a 250D.
@@Josh_Sattin Dummy Battery to the rescue and adding a DC Decoupler with an external 100Watt PD Power Bank I have no issues taking pics outside. Yes the 4k video does cause overheating but I can switch it to HD. Love Your Videos! Cheers!
Hey Josh, so to get rid of the wobble issue, do people just buy a Canon IS lens and use it with the IBIS turned off? seems like IBIS is causing this issue
If you have a lens with IS and you turn the lens IS on it turns the IBIS on. If you turn the lens IS off it turns the IBIS off. You can't have one on and one off.
Josh, does enhanced digital stab cost you resolution, or do the clips with enhanced have the same resolution as those without stab? Is it a useful tool to punch in more for telephoto video?
This is a great question and I haven't seen any documentation on this. That is why I mentioned this during the APS-C segment in this video. The file that you get from the camera is still 4K, but how it handles the resolution while cropping in is a question mark. These cameras have a 6K sensor so cropping in while in full frame mode shouldn't be a problem. When I tested the raw on the R6II, the crop mode is only 3.7K. Even if it was 4K in APS-C mode, once you crop in then you are getting less than 4K resolution. So I am not sure what is going on in terms of upscaling or whatever but you don't get anything for free.
@@Josh_Sattin I crop now and then to avoid like my car engine hood and windshield wipers depending on the lens I use. So instead of seeing Matchbox Vehicles that look tiny and far away I get a much closer view . Now on Sony when using Extra Image Zoom you do have poorer focus. Also a good point when cropping. In my opinion the Resolution becomes HD instead of 4k. Cheers!
@@Josh_Sattin i would like to ask you one thing , is cinematography possible with ef lenses on canon mirrorless camera with gimbal ?? A doubt comes in my mind that ef lenses will create pressure on adaptor(especially heavy lenses like 35mm 1.4) , and may be that will not suits gimbal
Unless there is a locking mechanism for IBIS, the non-IBIS cameras like R8 (and R5C etc.) will actually have better video if they use the electronic and lens stabe. This is counterintuitive, but the IBIS creates wonky, screen-corner artifacts which looks plain bad. I hope Canon creates some sort of mechanism in their future cameras otherwise more than half of their cameras are taken off the list for videographers
I do not know the actual number. I haven't tried to figure that out and I'm not sure if Canon has provided it either. It's pretty easy to check. Record some video on a tripod. Then record a clip with digital stab on. Zoom in on the first shot to match the digital stab clip and that is the crop factor.
Hey, I have a problem with my Canon R6mk2. Briefly in advance: This is not a companion effect, as I have tested no problem with several R6mk2 cameras. Whenever I install the camera on my Gibmal and deactivate the stabilization on both the lens and the camera OR when I activate it, my video recordings shake on a horizontal level. In fact, the activated or deactivated image stabilizer in the camera shakes as soon as I walk, run or jump. You not only see it in the video recording, you also hear it clicking. Do you perhaps have a solution?
Q: Does video lose quality when digital stablize on? and if i use crop mode 1,6 and turn digital stablize on, does video lose quality more?? Thank you !
Wow I had so many people telling me don’t get R8 cause no IBIS will ruin video, yet the comparison between R8 and R6ii immediately sold me on the R8. The wobbles were so blatant in the video, tragic you can’t have lens stabilisation without IBIS on that camera.
I was always told from Wedding Professionals with higher shutter speeds you do not have to depend on an IBIS. Cheers! Testing the R8 now. Liking it a lot.
I don't want to do much video. I do want to shoot in very low light. I've gotten to and age where I am ready to retire m Canon 80ds to studio and teaching and need lightweight mirror less
You are good at this, but the R8 is a waste of money (Sorry) Without IBIS on Canon you might as well by my grandad's 8mm film Camera from 1959. As soon as Canon gets out of one mud hole they dig themselves another muddy hole. Also, Their Pro level C cameras are all out of date.. Some 5 years behind modern technology. They are all due for complete updates, Even Panasonic GH6, and S5ii x has better codecs, + Much better colour and exposure latitude, Less Noise + a ton of useful Cinematography functions exclusive to Lumix ... (e.g Waveform). So how come Panasonic can sell better Cameras for less? Sony also has better Auto focus. Weird comment. I had a 5D Mark III for the last decade. Did just fine. Just picked up a R8 for travel and it's light-years better than my 5D Mark III is. Do you really need in camera stabilization? You can do it in post incredibly easily.
@@AllenGingrichcome on. Any non ibis stabilization crops the image and increases the focal lenght, which messes up everything about the lens you have bought. Not to mention that you can’t use the widest setting of the lens. The ‘one job’ of ibis is to add stabilization without crop. The only other option is gimbal, which is superior to any ibis. And ig you pay for ibis and it can’t do its job and that you can’t turn it off, makes no sense. The only thing I can think off is that canon doesn’t want people to use ibis with wide lenses, or doesn’t want to admit that canon bis is inferior.

Would like to ask for a compact combo of R8 + 16mm F2.8
Assume we have the crop factor of:
Digital IS x1.1
Digital IS Enhanced x1.3
APSC crop x1.6
Is it realistic to assume that we can achieve
16mm x1.1 = 17.6mm
16mm x1.3 x1.6 = 33.3mm
Which is close to a 16-35 F2.8! Stabilized!
Is it practical or there is a catch, like bad IQ at 33.3mm scenario or limitation at certain record setting? Thank you!
do you lose any video quality with the IS cropping?
OMG,how could you make a video such amazing?! I absolutely love your comparison! Excellent work!!!!!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
@@Josh_Sattin Thank YOU for your hard work!
IBIS for video blows anyway - those shakes are annoying and when panning it’s not ideal either. Lens stabilisation for lifestyle shots and vlogs is absolutely fine, anything else, like you’ve said - you need a gimbal. Good stuff the R8 is so light for that very reason :)
So - don’t sweat the lack of IBIS.
Hello Josh, which objective you recommend for videos for yt indoor with nice bokeh?
It depends on the size of your room and the size sensor you have, but the longer the focal length and the lower the aperture for more bokeh.
This helped me a lot. I will buy a R8 and lenses with stabilization.
Glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
anotha one! (inside baseball)
I read somewhere that the digital IS made the CLog3 noise worst… have you noticed that?
I haven't noticed that but I don't use digital IS very often. I could see how that could happen in APS-C mode where it must be using less than 4K resolution.
Coming back to photography after about ten years away, I last shot a 7D. Everyone’s talking about IBIS. I’m thinking that I managed without it for all the time before, do I need to spend an extra grand for it now? Doubtful. In lens IS just seems great as it is.
I agree with you fully
it looks like digital stab in R8 does not working at all if lens have IS, but it's turned off.
@@doghot5374 I am confused by your comment. Can you please clarify?
@@Josh_Sattin you turn off IS on the lens, then digital IS will not work, it seem to crop in the image but it won't stablize.
Yeah, it's just so weird you can't uncouple the lens stab and IBIS in these cameras.
I could literally pick up a x-s20 with premium sets of glass at the same cost of the r8 with just one of those RF len's with IS in it
Great tests, man! Thanks a lot!
Brilliant test! Thanks:)
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
All tests are accurately labeled. I mentioned the methods in which I shot these tests and that I do not have very steady hands.
For IBIS fans...the best IBIS is being offered by Lumix S5 mk2.
Pentax and OM1 Systems will disagree with you on that perspective. Cheers!
I appreciated your effort, sir. This helps a lot since I only need a Canon for photography (trip) and video sometimes. I think the R8 is enough. Does anyone have other ideas between these two?
Thanks for the tests!

@@Josh_Sattin If r8 had an IBIS - it would be a perfect budget/travel full-frame camera. But I guess IBIS would eat that short battery life even more.
Does cropping in enhanced mode makes worse video quality?

Thanks for this review. This is actually exactly what I was looking for. I’m actually wondering, how is the digital IS in the R8 vs the old RP. Is there any evidence that it’s actually improved?
You're welcome. Unfortunately I haven't used the RP before.
Which camera i buy for photo and video canon r8 or sony a7m3 plz ans😮
Thanks Josh, this video was very helpful. Is it possible to test the IBIS on the R6MK2 using EF glass?, im planning to upgrade from my 5d mk3 to RF mount and have a bunch of EF lenses
(28,35,50,85,100, etc) but non of those have IS.
You're welcome. Unfortunately I won't be testing that.
@@NecroMoz Lara Farms uses her iPhone and the video looks sharp. Cheers!
Unfortunately I do not have any experience shooting underwater.
The R6II is a much more reliable video camera than the R8 because of the overheating and smaller battery in the R8.
@@Josh_Sattin Dummy Battery to the rescue and adding a DC Decoupler with an external 100Watt PD Power Bank I have no issues taking pics outside. Yes the 4k video does cause overheating but I can switch it to HD. Love Your Videos! Cheers!
Hey Josh,
so to get rid of the wobble issue,
do people just buy a Canon IS lens and use it with the IBIS turned off?
seems like IBIS is causing this issue
If you have a lens with IS and you turn the lens IS on it turns the IBIS on. If you turn the lens IS off it turns the IBIS off. You can't have one on and one off.

Very nice 👍 A test with a >85 mm lens without lens stabilisation would be interesting.

As long as you have a good adapter, have a solid gimbal and balance it properly it should be fine.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you for your reply , appreciated
Unless there is a locking mechanism for IBIS, the non-IBIS cameras like R8 (and R5C etc.) will actually have better video if they use the electronic and lens stabe. This is counterintuitive, but the IBIS creates wonky, screen-corner artifacts which looks plain bad. I hope Canon creates some sort of mechanism in their future cameras otherwise more than half of their cameras are taken off the list for videographers
Do you happen to know the crop factor for the R8 with digital stabilization?
I do not know the actual number. I haven't tried to figure that out and I'm not sure if Canon has provided it either. It's pretty easy to check. Record some video on a tripod. Then record a clip with digital stab on. Zoom in on the first shot to match the digital stab clip and that is the crop factor.
The r8 is way better then both r6 and R62 on keeping it smooth for hand held.
that shot at 13:00 is beautiful

Hey, I have a problem with my Canon R6mk2. Briefly in advance: This is not a companion effect, as I have tested no problem with several R6mk2 cameras. Whenever I install the camera on my Gibmal and deactivate the stabilization on both the lens and the camera OR when I activate it, my video recordings shake on a horizontal level. In fact, the activated or deactivated image stabilizer in the camera shakes as soon as I walk, run or jump. You not only see it in the video recording, you also hear it clicking. Do you perhaps have a solution?

You are good at this, but the R8 is a waste of money (Sorry)
Without IBIS on Canon you might as well by my grandad's 8mm film Camera from 1959. As soon as Canon gets out of one mud hole they dig themselves another muddy hole.
Also, Their Pro level C cameras are all out of date.. Some 5 years behind modern technology.
They are all due for complete updates,
Even Panasonic GH6, and S5ii x has better codecs, + Much better colour and exposure latitude, Less Noise +
a ton of useful Cinematography functions exclusive to Lumix ... (e.g Waveform).
So how come Panasonic can sell better Cameras for less?
Sony also has better Auto focus.
Canon can make the R8 less sophisticated, but without IBIS it is UNSUSABLE, Someone has to say it
Did you even watch the video?
@@hanworld6565 Yes, The AF is good, but the cheap battery is rubbish. Buying a whole gimbal to use camera for photo and Video is a expenssive, impractical, and backward. When Sony and Fuji have done it years ago, and Panasonic being the best IBIS and selling it cheap. Nothing personal, But Canon should stop making an infinate number of Models just to create more junk. They should put all of the important features in all cameras abd produce lesser number of models which only confuses the Vcameras sales guys.
