I liked the addition of a guest speaker on this camera. It was nice to see that he showed a cut to a second camera and actually looked at that camera while talking! Wow! Great presentation.
Bro, the R8 is perfect for vlogging because it has no ibis. There’s no ibis wobbles. Digital IS is fine, it’s what Sony uses and what I’m used to already. I bought it specifically for the no ibis, but the light weight is just a huge bonus, it’s super easy to hold with one hand and a little Manfrotto Pixie. My A7iv and 14mm GM were my last wet up, and it was too heavy for the pixie. This new setup is about the weight of the Sony A7iv by itself.
Hii...What do u think about a7cii over canon R8.. I am struck between the two. Does the absence of a mechanical shutter really matter ? I am currently using R7 and planning to shift to fullframe due to few lens selection in apsc. Pls guide ❤❤..
I know IBIS and dual card slots (battery etc.) can be a big deal, but I just can’t get past having an additional $1k to put into glass. That will take you from f4 to f2.8 in an L zoom lens. That’s a huge deal.
I bought the R8 and the stabilization is good. I got a dummy battery with a USB C connected to my external 100 watt Power Delivery power bank. Z9 does 2 hours and 5 minutes. I do 4k 30 in vehicles and 4k 24 when walking. Overheating is overrated. In my sling bag i carry the 28mm pancake, 50mm (nifty fifty) and the 16mm lenses. I have seen no content about in camera mode about the 2x and 4x zoom. It's fantastic for the closeup shot and with the 50mm = 100 and 200 who would need a teleconverter. When putting on the a telezoom like my 100-400mm the pics are fantastic plus the video is excellent. I use full IPB and the picture quality is excellent. Cheers!
Sounds like a great C & D camera for R5 or R6 for wedding work. Never leaves a tripod. If I were shooting canon I’d buy two, but since I’m Sony it’s two FX30’s for me.
R6II owner, love the camera. I think the R8 camera will be a great b-cam. No IBIS is not a huge deal breaker. It wasn’t that long ago that we were all using dslrs with no ibis on gimbals. The R8 on the DJI RS 3 Mini with the RF or EF 24mm 2.8 would be a great set up. The IS on those lenses on a gimbal would be more than enough for smooth shots.
Walking I do not vlog because I keep holding the camera too low. So I just set it down and then step back. When walking and recording the camera is pointed away from me to show what I am viewing. Besides it is light and very portable. Cheers!
They should of kept the dual memory slots since I would of loved to start getting paid gigs with the R8 (also it has no IBS) I would of went with the R7 but the autofocus is a bit behind the r8 in some areas now im not sure what to go with. What are your thoughts?
I love the fact the R8 uses the LP-E17 batteries. I think for me personally, coming from a Rebel T7i it makes sense. The things I am loosing is battery life and dual card slots compared with the R6 mk II (and of course the built in stabilization, but since I shoot off tripods that doesn't concern me)
I was thinking that. People complain about wobbling on wide angle lenses and if you’re using stabilized wide lenses like the RF 24mm f/1.8 or RF 15-35mm, I’ve heard plenty of RUclipsrs say these shots looked better on R than R5/6.
With everyone talking about the battery life, you can get a third party battery grip designed for the canon RP thus doubling the battery life while getting a better grip and vertical shutter. Not sure why they don’t just make one specifically for the r8 but the rp one works great as the two cameras are basically the same body size.
10-bit? CanonLog3? Saw in one video that there isn't a cover over the sensor - that gives me anxiety. 😬Loved seeing Patrick in this video! I still think the R6 MkII is the best option for me to replace my EOS R, especially since I do a lot of photography. If I was only vlogging and creating content outside of the studio, I'd still go for the R7 over the R8. Anyway, still going to sit on the EOS R even with this announcement, but definitely hoping to add a new Canon camera to my lineup eventually... Thanks for the breakdown, Josh!
You're welcome Matthew! Yeah same video as the R6 II... 10 bit 422 Clog 3. There is no mechanical shutter so it can't cover the sensor when powered off.
I was hesitant between the R8 and the similarly priced R7. I chose the R7 finally because of the bigger battery, IBIS, dual card slots and overall construction. I have no regret. I do not intend to buy any RF-S lenses so if I ever upgrade to a full frame Canon, I will be able to reuse all my lenses.
IBIS for me is not a big deal why because there's a lot of lenses that have stabilization built-in. Most photographer/videographer survived without IBIS on DSLR cameras. I have 3 lenses, Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 G2, Tamron 35mm f1.4 and Tamron SP 15-30mm f2.8 G2; only one don't have stabilization. There are also issues using IBIS based on what I've watched. No mechanical shutter maybe I myself have a Tamron 35mm f1.4 lens that may have issue with bokeh using Electronic First Curtain Shutter, I will just use the electronic shutter. SD Card, I will just use a reliable brand with high capacity. Battery, for me this is the biggest issue but maybe a 3rd party battery grip that can hold 2 batteries at a same time will be available in the future.
Hi bro! very nice work. I do really enjoy you stuff. Succes!! I see on internet, youtube exacly, that the Canon R8 is overheating very fast, less than 20 minuts in 4k 24p. So, did you had some experience with overheating? how much time the Canon R8 can record in 24p 4k in summer in real world without overheats? Thanks a lot for the help!
I moved from a Canon 5d mki to the Fujifilm xt200. Yeah i know quite a big difference between these 2 cameras. I want to return to canon and since I can't afford the r6 mkii, i think the r8 will be an amazing deal for someone like me. The plan is to get the r8 , invest on lenses (finally) and after the r8 serves me no more, upgrade to a better canon.
Thanks dude, really gave me a breakdown for what I’m looking for. I need two canons so I’ll prob go with r8 to save money. I got a quality gimbal with a nice handle so if shaking is an issue for videos I can always refer to it. You made it pretty clear r6 mii kills it, but r8 is great if you can work around the negatives
Thanks John! A good no nonsense, succinct review. For someone like me with EF lenses who hasn’t bought into RF yet, the LUMIX S5II is looking very tempting for only $500 more than the R8, given the ability to use Sigma’s MC21 to adapt EF lenses. Other than the full frame 4K/60fps and the lightweight form of the R8, the S5II is superior in so many important areas that it is a better and longer term investment.
@@helmutleitner5784 You are correct. That is absolutely another option. Had the R8 been released a couple of years back I probably would have bought it then. In the interim however I bought a LUMIX G9. I have a 5d iii and that meets my needs in terms of stills. The next purchase will be video focused. I’m on the fence as to which direction I head: RF, RF-S, L mount or MFT (once PDAF is rolled out to the G and GH lines of LUMIX). I feel the tech is reaching a point of maturity (eg video record times limits have been removed or lifted significantly, 10bit 4K, great AF, etc). So we are offered excellent options regardless of brand. LUMIX has powerful video features which I think would be worth the step up (vs the R8). I also like that the LUMIX f1.8 lenses are not as expensive as canon L series, but offer weather sealing, minimal focus breathing etc.
I’ve recently bought an R8. Small batteries are annoying but not a deal breaker, I would prefer 2 card slots but plenty of canon dslr’s only had one and I rarely heard complaints and I’ve only had one fail. I think it’s only a matter of time before all cameras have electronic shutter and as for ibis, I’ve managed without it for 50 years. The body seemed small after my 5D4 but I’m getting used to it. I may get an RP grip to solve size/battery issue in one go.
I am a bit puzzled as to why the R8 is presented as a vlogging camera because it is "cheap". For me it seems like a good camera for gimbal work creating beautiful images, as it has the same sensor as the R6II, light weight (good), good AF (good), no IBIS (good for gimbal, better than having an IBIS you cannot control). I never vlog, so my opinion is irrelevant, but I would not choose this kind of camera for walking around handheld pointing the camera at me. I am also puzzled by Canon's strategy of marketing the R8 .... hardly any buzz and promotion, as if they were ashamed of it.
For wide content, I’d rather not have canon’s 1st gen ibis. I’d love to see you use that 15-30 lens with the R8. That’s the perfect combo for content creators
Thanks for your thoughts Josh. The battery life and better grip issues may be solved easily with a very inexpensive third party battery grip - when I had the RP, this did the trick and gave me better battery life than LP-E6N and a very comfortable hold on the body.
I'm really starting to regret wanting to upgrade from my 90D for 4k video..... lol I've gone from considering the Sony a7siii to the zv-e1 to the a7iv to the canon r6 mii to now apparently the r8 😵💫
I'm still pretty set on the R6 Mark II. I shoot professionally, so I need the dual card slots. It's super annoying that they put an arbitrary recording limit on the R8. I thought we were done with that. Smh.
Would you pair the R8 and R7 for a studio/run and gun video/photo combo? One ibis and one non ibis might be nice, plus full frame depth with the apsc reach, sharing lenses across RF...
That could be a cool combo. The only issue is if you are leaning on the IBIS of the R7, you might want some wide lenses and there aren't many options for APSC.
I had the R50 and loved the camera but traded it in with the R6 for the R6 II. R7 was great but do not do wildlife except my dog and cat and local deer. The R50 is tiny not like a point and shoot but I kept pressing the wrong buttons and when vlogging you can press the back. Unfortunately I was new to Canon at the time and didn't know about the lock feature. They probably have a book for the R50 for Dummies. Cheers!
I am no pro in photography, just for shooting portraits when family is gathered or walking in the wild. I do not use camera for video that much (if not at all), which camera would be the best fit for me? I was debating between the R8, R7 (maybe R6, price is away from my budget). Trying to switch from a canon 800D (T7i) Any advice, thanks in advance!
Help me decide. I have a 7dm1 and a 5dm4 and a whole bunch of EF, L lenses. I don't want to completely go mirrorless cause i love the 5D. I want a second body to replace the 7D. I'm a semi pro shooter and plan on doing 1080@60fps video. Should i go for the R8 or R6m2? I plan on getting a EF adapter for the R.
I'm using R5. I wanted to get a backup camera but smaller and cheaper than my R5. I was hoping the R8 but the battery is the issue for. It's not compatible with my R5. Still like the specs and price though.
I think the R8 is prefect for it. Ofcourse i respect Josh's view on the matter, but if you want good quality images in a compact body, the R8 is perfect. IBIS gives ugly wobbles on the side of the video and if you have lensen with IS, IBIS barely adds anything. For travel i would recommend it. Btw, the R8 and the 35mm 1.8 IS will be a great combo!
Your friend identified a narrow but legitimate use case: fixed camera with USB power. In that case I don't think it has any disadvantages to the R6II. But I was really hoping for a "full frame R7" as the R replacement. I think the R7 is really something great and I'm glad to own it. But when I shoot music I wish I could do 24 and 35mm 1.8 full frame instead of 24mm 1.8 APSC. Maybe they can do a better 16mm prime (or 20mm?) and I just stay APSC.
Yeah, that limited use case of a studio with mains power is very specific but will work well. The R6II is sort of a full frame version of the R7 in a lot of ways. Canon definitely needs some decent wide lenses for full frame and APSC.
"Fixed camera with USB power" is exactly why I'm so excited for this camera. That's one of my most common use cases, and IBIS and battery size simply don't matter. I even have a Canon dummy battery if I have mains power. The built-in streaming is amazing, too. As for APS-C lenses, honestly, all they need to do is give Sigma the green light. Their 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm f/1.4 would instantly make RF-S perfectly usable.
@@Josh_Sattin Unfortunately the R6II is 65% more expensive than the R7. I wish the R8 was the R9 and we were still waiting for an R replacement while this would be the RP replacement. R6II is probably the "right" camera for me and the content I make but it's a real dilemma between R6II vs. R7 vs. R7 AND R6II.
I wouldn't stress so much about the right body. I would focus on investing in lenses as much as you can. Bodies change pretty often. All of these cameras produce great image quality.
@@Josh_Sattin I've got the 24, 35, and 50 1.8s as well as the 100-400 with the R7 and I love and use them all. Solid foundation that should be future-proof. Before that I had the RP and 35 and 50 (plus the 24-105 I never used) and got some great results with that. I think embracing prime lenses was my best move so far.
Hi Josh, what do you think about using an EFM-adapter to the R8 combining the R8 with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4? Will that work well or is it just a bad idea?
That won't work for several reasons. The adapter converts an EF lens to an EF-M mount camera. The lens is an EF-M mount and the R8 has a RF mount. Also the Sigma 16mm is an APSC lens and the R8 is full frame.
@@MeAndMyOpinions_OverYoursliterally. When I had my Sony mark 2 I rarely used the dual slots. Unless you took an extreme amount of shots for weddings but I use 128gb
I really don't do much photography but from what I understand, not having a full mechanical shutter will result in slower readout speeds leading to warping, banding and can also cause some weird looking bokeh when the lens is at a wide aperture.
If I recall correctly, some jurisdiction consider any camera that can record more then two hours of continuous video to be a video camera (camcorder) rather than a still photography camera. For them there is a distinction, as to why, I do not remember.
R8 is for any entry to mid level content creator. I think if you're making a full time living with your camera then R6II and above makes sense, as least in terms of investment.
there is a mechanical shutter, just that the first first curtain is held open electronically. Obviously to save money and not having to install a more robust 2-part mechanical shutter. This “feature” will probably affect people who use flash the most. Also, it changes the bokeh a bit which some portrait people may not like.
A mechanical shutter is not listed on the B&H Photo product page where as it is on all of the other Canon mirrorless cameras (R3, R5, R6, R6II, R7, etc.). Also, the sensor is not covered when the camera is turned off, like the other cameras which do have a mechanical shutter.
@@Josh_Sattin covering is probably an option that has to be turned on. Most sonys don’t even have that option, and they all have “fully “ mechanical shutters.
Sony hasn't updated the firmware in some of their cameras even though they have mechanical shutters. The FX3 for example. But that is a whole different issue. The newest Sony releases all have the ability to cover the sensor except the FX30 because it doesn't have a mechanical shutter. The R8 does not have a mechanical shutter and I saw a few videos of people complaining about it not covering the sensor when the other canon mirrorless cameras do (that have a mechanical shutter). Go look at product page yourself: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1748813-REG/canon_eos_r8_mirrorless_camera.html/specs
Would you choose an R8 or R as a FF companion camera to an R7 or scrap it all for an R6mkII. I want to consider the R8, but its smaller RP like formfactor, means it doesn't use the same batteries for easier logistics like the R. But I do prefer the performance and updated tech of the R8.
@Josh Sattin Well, as is the lenses I use most are APS-C; Sigma 17-50 f2.8, Sigma 18-300 f3.5-6.3 while I also have the Canon 50 f1.8 and Sigma 150-600 contemporary. I would need to replace my 18-300 at least if I jump just to full frame, which is why I was thinking of running 2 to cover everything I would and could do.
I’m stuck between getting a used R5 but I also like the idea of getting a new camera and I’m stuck between getting the R6 Mk1 and R8. I’m an amateur filmmaker and I want to upgrade from my R50 just so I can get the full frame experience but it’s hard to watch these camera videos because no one really talks about these cameras from a film makers perspective.
I've tried all the cameras you mentioned about buying and here is my opinion... Since your an amateur film maker & want a newer camera then the R6 mk2 is the way to go. Not only does it have a better autofocus system but it has 4 more megapixels than the R6 mk1 AND you get to shoot at 40FPS in electronic shutter. The R5 on the other hand is a good camera but ask your self this... Do you really need the extra megapixels? if you don't do any major cropping or work jobs that require a 45 megapixel photo then spending that extra cash is unnecessary. Just use that money to buy a lens. I can only recommend the R6 mk1 if you want to save more money. You can't go wrong with either camera at the end of the day.
what about the R6 vs R8?? here in japan you can get a used R6 for $1500 so the same price as the R8. Help me out with choosing! I think IBIS is the deal breaker for me since I do automotive/track photography often and do low shutter with long lenses with that.
@@torgnyhansson7409 i think im gonna go for the R6 personally. I want the bigger body as ill have some big lenses on occasionally and want the better balance, and IBIS is the biggest deal breaker for me. Same price so going with the body with IBIS makes more sense to me.
@@torgnyhansson7409 Ibis wobble is caused by the sensor moving around inside the camera since the RP and now the R8 and R5C have a fixed sensor they don't wobble with wide angle lenses like the R5R6's
2:48 - you didn't mention here that there is in fact Digital IS for video which actually has improved greatly since its early years plus it'll give the Dynamic IS feature with lenses with IS.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks Josh, I'm commenting as I watch. In regards to your summary at 10:25, Digital IS btw would work fine for vlogging with the 15-30mm IS non-L, it's not heavy at all. I'd say the real point you have in your video is no full-size HDMI, now that's a drawback for sure. Then again it's a budget camera isn't it.
@@Josh_Sattin You have some points for sure, but ya also gotta remember Josh not everyone's hands are the same as yours. I know coz i actually use it that way - handhold vlogging with that kinda light weight, paired with the IS. But whatever, hope u get to use and test the R8 for real. Dan Watson had actually tested it and in the short time he had with it he said it's good, for its price
I’m excited about the price, but I have an R now. And the battery being the same as the M50 is silly. So I think my next camera has to be a major upgrade.
Sony knows that full frame is kind of magic for many people. And aps c is called a crop sensor, but that is compared to a lens for a full frame camera. If companies would kind of build in metabones like adapations in a lens. You could have aps c lenses on a aps c camera that would produce the same well not the same, even better. Then full frame camera's. You can wonder why they don't. It is all legacy. I hope one day there will be a company that can build a new system that doesn't bother itself with this legacy and just build a camera that can do it all that is available for all. The technology is there.
No ibis is actually a selling point for me... i hate the wobbling image of the canon ibis so much, like y'all don't noticed it or choose to ignore it? My eos R look a lot better stabilisation wise only with lens IS and i can add didgital IS sometimes when i feel it needs it... So the R8 sounds a LOT more interesting to me than if it had ibis in it. The battery however... 😬
Thanks for sharing your opinions! Canon more or less made an entry-level video camera. Pretty good to have the same image quality and as an R6 for 1k less. I have a lot of anxiety doing client work but only having one SD card slot though. I def agree with you there!
@@Josh_Sattin right though. Having as an additional cam like your friend Patrick said is a great case. Also excellent podcast! It’ll be fun to hear more about the stuff next video too!
the loud shutter will be great for pissing people off during wedding speeches. And I love canon giving 2 fingers to their customers and saying, no, swallow the LPE17 and choke on it. R8 is a missed opportunity
I have done extensive testing on my channel and I do the extreme of placing the camera on my cars dashboard and start recording different modes. The windshield acts like a magnifying glass so it will heat faster. I would recommend the Rode Lavalier or an external microphone to remove the wind noise. It does have the updated shoe connector for that so you can use the newer shotgun mics for this purpose or whatever device that Canon makes for this. I am going to shoot the Alamo today and try out this camera. I have had this camera for a week and falling in love with it. BTW I do own the R6 II and the R10. Also have Nikon and Sony cameras. Give me a few more years and I will have a museum. Cheers!
IMHO the battery life and potential lens heavy setup will be the downsides on the R8. That being said, I think this is a more proper 'entry-level hybrid full-frame' R camera compared to RP. I would pick the STM prime lenses for video and even the 24-105 STM for stills for an all-rounder travel cam. In the world of great affordable gimbals, IBIS is becoming less and less relevant for video. I really hope Canon is done with filling up their R system lineup, so hopefully they can release mid-tier lenses 😂
I think if Canon gave me an R8 in an R7 body with an extra dial, IBIS, bigger battery, one card slot, bigger buffer, variable programmable frame rates like the R3 up to 40 fps and say called it an R9 for $1900 or so I’d by it in a heartbeat! 💓 😀
it does overheat! and pretty badly from what I’ve seen. DAVISION tested it. The review is jn german though since some german reviewers were already able to test it at home.
I think that would be a great move. Even though Canon does not agree, I view the R8 as an RP replacement, same body, but the internals have been swapped out. I may recommend my daughter do the same as you, she has the RP and is using it for video. Since she has a gimble she doesn't need IBIS.
Great review Josh. Interesting camera that I don't think anyone asked for! But where are my lenses Canon! Where are they?! 😂Where is the 10-20 f2.8 IS that EVERYBODY wants for APSC content creation! I would take an R7 over the R8 any day of the week though. Those tiny batteries cripple this camera. You literally need like 15 of them for a full day shooting on the M50 and that's without 4k 60
All the negative you feel toward this camera is due to the fact that you are not putting yourself into the mind and position of an amateur photographer who this camera is geared for this is for someone who is new to photography and wants a good quality full frame camera you don’t need ibis for video anyone worth two cents in video is using a gimbal so Ibis is really best suited for still photography or if you’re going to stand still without moving and shoot some video and the fact that you can not turn off the ibis on some of cannons cameras are really a hindrance you’re getting the same auto focus you’re getting the same image quality you’re getting 4K 60 at full sensor read out. For a content creator or someone new to photography not a professional I repeat not a professional who needs two card slots !! And a larger battery.
Thank you for the comment. This video is titled and is mainly about how the R8 differs from the R6 II. I stated that the R8 is a fantastic photography camera and will deliver excellent image quality for the price. Most beginner content creators will not have a gimbal. They will pick up this camera and start vlogging with it and will not be happy with the shaky image. I agreed this camera is geared more towards beginners but a lot of my audience are already content creators or videographers. This could easily be a B or C cam for those people. I am doing my best to state facts here to help people make decisions about which gear to buy. Thanks for checking out the video.
Why do youtubers only talk about cameras How best are they? Why do they forget that canon lenses are too costly n bulky, also they do not have any party option . Once you buy into the camera system the lens is the most important thing that if sony makes 2k camera but they have cheaper lens line-up
I can't speak for other RUclipsrs, but I am constantly talking about how we want Canon to make more lenses for all of these new bodies. And of course, allow third party manufacturers to make lenses for the RF mount.
It seems Canon has bothered to work out Sony's camera product segmentation and positioned their new cameras to beat Sony at every price point by just enough to make it count!
I got the R6 ii. I feel they have to add features such as more codecs and bit rate options. My expectations from R6 ii is more now. Canon has to deliver.
@@Josh_Sattin So finally it’s clear that R8 and R50 have no mechanical shutters Can you please tell me which one is more reliable for wildlife photography.? I know you don’t focus on photography TIA Josh
Same here, except rather than ordering an R7, i got a great deal on eBay for a mint RP. The R6ii is what I wanted all along and it still is. Def sending the RP back and getting at least the R8, if I don't splurge on the R6ii.
Sony is really dropping the ball for the “enthusiast” market. Canon is filling every single possible slot that any enthusiast would want at good price ranges. The only thing Sony has is the third party lens support
I have an aps-c camera and I want an upgrade. R8 looks great for me. 4k60 no crop and I can’t care less for the lack of IBIS or 6k to external recorder.
I think you missed the target audience. They don't have clients nor do they shoot a thousand images per day. They won't be using a joystick, don't care about a two hour video limit, and aren't going to be using heavy "L" lenses.
thanks you !! i order my R6mk2 to go whit my R7 .... i always want a full frame ... im lucky i works for canon ... i had a very good price so i jumps on it ... for lanscape et low light inside
The aforementioned shortcomings are a major deal breaker, not to mention it has some hidden costs like exclusive pricey RF lenses or inability to use 3rd party batteries (Canon might block it) hence, you need to fork a couple of hundred extra for OEM batteries. I don't think any Pros would even touch this camera as their primary body for paid gigs, could've added a secondary microSD slot instead dince they are fast enough these days.
That IBIS wobbling of R6II looks so amateurish, even smartphones does it better
On R8 no ibis, no problem)
Yea that wobbling is annoying. I thought wobbling only appears on a digital stabilize.
Thanks, Josh! The R8 sounds like an amazing lower cost alternative for plug-in-power studio work where ibis/battery wouldn't affect your workflow.
You're welcome. Agreed, that is a great use case for the R8.
the R8 is much more than 90% of people needs in term of video and photos

Thanks for the video. What are you filming this video with?
You're welcome. FX3/A74
Wow, the canon cripple hammer in full effect!
Helpful. Thanks. Moving from R7 to R6Mk2. I just like having a vertical grip and full frame. I like it on wider shots.
They should of kept the dual memory slots since I would of loved to start getting paid gigs with the R8 (also it has no IBS)
I would of went with the R7 but the autofocus is a bit behind the r8 in some areas
now im not sure what to go with.
What are your thoughts?
I love the fact the R8 uses the LP-E17 batteries. I think for me personally, coming from a Rebel T7i it makes sense. The things I am loosing is battery life and dual card slots compared with the R6 mk II (and of course the built in stabilization, but since I shoot off tripods that doesn't concern me)
Not sure whcih one to choose Do a lot of indoor video and some outdoor landscape b roll The ibis on R6 ii comes in handy outdoors on trails etc
Losing the ibis might be a plus for some.
For sure. I think for the target market though, they would benefit with having IBIS.
@@Josh_Sattin agreed
I agree
I was thinking that. People complain about wobbling on wide angle lenses and if you’re using stabilized wide lenses like the RF 24mm f/1.8 or RF 15-35mm, I’ve heard plenty of RUclipsrs say these shots looked better on R than R5/6.
I wish we had the ability to turn IBIS off in the camera while still using lens stab. That would give us options in certain situations.
@@Josh_Sattin Ah, copy that. Yeah, I love knowing my sensor's covered when I swap lenses on the EOS R.
Me too man. I wish every camera did that.
If money isn’t a particular issue, is the R6 mkii the option to go for better than the R8?
Thank you!
Yes, I would personally choose the R6II over the R8.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
It lost me at no IBIS. As I get older, that's becoming more and more useful when shooting slower shutter speeds.
You should look at lok & kai r8 review video. There's some overheat testing done by lok
When you say that, why not consider to adapt your EF glass to the R8 using one of the 3 availabler Canon RF-EF Adapter options?
So the R8 has vertical video, does the R6mk2?
Thanks for your thoughts Josh. The battery life and better grip issues may be solved easily with a very inexpensive third party battery grip - when I had the RP, this did the trick and gave me better battery life than LP-E6N and a very comfortable hold on the body.
You're welcome! That's definitely a good option for a workaround.
Vello makes a great one for the RP. I wonder if RP accessories will work seamlessly with R8 bodies. 🤔
@@Linteria yes, I was wondering that too... Looks very similar in body shape to RP, so I would say yes. Neewer version worked great too.
I'm really starting to regret wanting to upgrade from my 90D for 4k video..... lol
I've gone from considering the Sony a7siii to the zv-e1 to the a7iv to the canon r6 mii to now apparently the r8 😵💫
i’m in the same spot atm. did you end up choosing one?
I'm still pretty set on the R6 Mark II. I shoot professionally, so I need the dual card slots. It's super annoying that they put an arbitrary recording limit on the R8. I thought we were done with that. Smh.
Yeah, that record limit is nonsense.
Sounds like the R8 is entry level so you’re not the target demographic anyways
Would you pair the R8 and R7 for a studio/run and gun video/photo combo? One ibis and one non ibis might be nice, plus full frame depth with the apsc reach, sharing lenses across RF...
That could be a cool combo. The only issue is if you are leaning on the IBIS of the R7, you might want some wide lenses and there aren't many options for APSC.
@@Josh_Sattin I've got the efs 10-18 for R7, and the rf 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8s! Comng from 90D and 77D, so I have batteries for both already too.
Trying to switch from a canon 800D (T7i)
Any advice, thanks in advance!
For your use case, I would recommend the R8 since it's full frame and will give you the same image as the R6II.
I outlined all of the differences between the R6 II and R8 in this video. You need to figure out which ones are important to you.
How can you make a comparsion without having the actual camera tested?.....
seems great for tripod b-cam 2nd angle for corporate/testimonials
I'm using R5. I wanted to get a backup camera but smaller and cheaper than my R5. I was hoping the R8 but the battery is the issue for. It's not compatible with my R5. Still like the specs and price though.
Sir,
I want to buy a mirrorless
Still confused between R8 and R6 Mark ii.
Which should I buy
Very helpful! I'm looking for a small mirrorless camera for travel but I don't think the R8 is the one. My main camera is a 5DMkiv and that's heavy!
Great review!
Canon R6 MII or Sony A7M4? Help me decide
ruclips.net/video/0OfUBOtj_NM/видео.html
Hey Josh, are you still using the R5C as your a cam? What’s the b cam? R7?
I am constantly rotating my cameras. This video was shot with the FX3/A74.
When using large/heavy lenses, attach the EG-E1, it vastly improves the ergonomics.
Great video. I have a choice between the r6 mk1 or the r8 for my budget. Which is the better choice?
Thanks! It depends on what you are using the camera for.
Are R8 rolling shutter same as R6II?
Yes, the yshould be the same but I haven't tested them against each other.
I can live with no IBIS but no full mechanical shutter and single cards is a big no no. I would had pay more for dual cards and mechanical shutter
Do you really need dual card slot?
Most people that have them don't fully utilize them
@@MeAndMyOpinions_OverYoursliterally. When I had my Sony mark 2 I rarely used the dual slots. Unless you took an extreme amount of shots for weddings but I use 128gb
@@preciouso609 my thoughts is grab $$$ media storage and replace them before they wear out.
Hi Josh, What exactly is the limit of the Electronic shutter in photography?
I really don't do much photography but from what I understand, not having a full mechanical shutter will result in slower readout speeds leading to warping, banding and can also cause some weird looking bokeh when the lens is at a wide aperture.
If I recall correctly, some jurisdiction consider any camera that can record more then two hours of continuous video to be a video camera (camcorder) rather than a still photography camera. For them there is a distinction, as to why, I do not remember.
That used to be 30 minutes, but that tax law has been removed.
R8 is for any entry to mid level content creator. I think if you're making a full time living with your camera then R6II and above makes sense, as least in terms of investment.
They said the same about the Canon R. Has made me plenty money after 5 years .
Do people really need dual cards and ibis?
there is a mechanical shutter, just that the first first curtain is held open electronically.
I would definitely take a R8 over the R. If you have the money, the R6II is better than the R8, but it depends on your needs.
@Josh Sattin
Well, as is the lenses I use most are APS-C; Sigma 17-50 f2.8, Sigma 18-300 f3.5-6.3 while I also have the Canon 50 f1.8 and Sigma 150-600 contemporary. I would need to replace my 18-300 at least if I jump just to full frame, which is why I was thinking of running 2 to cover everything I would and could do.
Thank you!!
Gimble and RP battery grip. I'll see myself out.
It will depend on whether or not the R8 overheats since the R6 does overheat pretty easily.
@@torgnyhansson7409 i think im gonna go for the R6 personally. I want the bigger body as ill have some big lenses on occasionally and want the better balance, and IBIS is the biggest deal breaker for me. Same price so going with the body with IBIS makes more sense to me.

2:48 - you didn't mention here that there is in fact Digital IS for video which actually has improved greatly since its early years plus it'll give the Dynamic IS feature with lenses with IS.
I did mention that. Please watch the full video.
Heavy gear makes a more stable image. I think you missed my point.
Can you do the r8 vs r7
I’m hesitant on R8 when shooting with flash.
I’m excited about the price, but I have an R now. And the battery being the same as the M50 is silly. So I think my next camera has to be a major upgrade.
Yeah there are definitely sacrifices with that price.
Hey, glad we have choices, right?
Although, with the tests I've seen of the R8, you still get about an hour of continuous video recording (4K, 24fps).
@@torgnyhansson7409 you can disable it but unfortunately it disable the lens IS altogether… so you end up with digital IS only.

I have the rp and r7. Might sell my rp and upgrade to this as I already have a bunch of spare batteries
Thanks! Yeah I'm not sure who was asking for this camera, we want lenses! Brandon and I will get more into all of this in the podcast.
Thanks for checking out the video.
the grip avaiable for r8 for 80$, better for big hands and lens...

I got the R6 ii. I feel they have to add features such as more codecs and bit rate options. My expectations from R6 ii is more now. Canon has to deliver.
There is no mechanical shutter.?
I think there is a mechanical shutter: 6 fps burst rate
Electronic 1st curtain
@@Josh_Sattin okay👍
Yeah it's a bit confusing, but no mechanical shutter option is listed on the B&H product page.
@@Josh_Sattin DP Review and Gordon mentioned it clearly
Or may be I didn't understand that clearly
@@Josh_Sattin
So finally it’s clear that R8 and R50 have no mechanical shutters
Can you please tell me which one is more reliable for wildlife photography.?
I know you don’t focus on photography
TIA Josh
Perfect video. I just ordered the R7 but the R8 made me realize I should just order the R6II, so that is what I did.
@@77dris that is great to hear, I cannot wait
Same here, except rather than ordering an R7, i got a great deal on eBay for a mint RP. The R6ii is what I wanted all along and it still is. Def sending the RP back and getting at least the R8, if I don't splurge on the R6ii.
@@Linteria just get the R6II 😂
Sony is really dropping the ball for the “enthusiast” market. Canon is filling every single possible slot that any enthusiast would want at good price ranges. The only thing Sony has is the third party lens support
Yeah Sony needs to put out some new cheaper cameras.
I have an aps-c camera and I want an upgrade. R8 looks great for me. 4k60 no crop and I can’t care less for the lack of IBIS or 6k to external recorder.
@@Yupthereitism wow, an expert’s here. Why?
@@Yupthereitism lol
I think this would be a fine upgrade from an APS-C camera for you.
You're welcome. The R6 II and R7 is a solid combo.
