I just wanted to say - I came across this video after watching Jared Polin's 2hr long video going through the settings on the R6 Mark II from the photography side and I am so thankful that both of you guys went into all the settings (I can't believe I sat through 2.5hrs videos of just camera settings LOL). It's incredibly helpful and way better than trying to look up stuff in the manual. Please don't ever delete this video!
(just as a side note: Jared did go over the video settings but he is primarily a photographer so even though he covered it, he left most settings alone and didn't really explain from a videography perspective because that's not his specialty.)
Josh, just wanted to say this was really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Big, huge, giant, massive thank you and much appreciated for this breakdown. Straightforward, honest and easy to scrub through when going back and checking up on something. Cheers friend.
Thanks for this. Got my Canon R6 Mk2 a week back and have been playing around with it recording videos for my RUclips-channel. Watched this whole video, helped me a lot! I had missed the setting about the audio quality, thanks!
You're welcome! I'm glad to hear this video was helpful for you. Enjoy the R6 II !
Josh, This is an outstanding video because not only did you show how you set it up BUT you also explained the settings. That way, when I prefer a different setting for my needs, I have a much better understanding. I've had the R6II for a few weeks and have just begun to explore the video settings. Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to your future videos.
You are very welcome. I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for taking the time to dive in, learn, then teach these settings. Def picked up some tips and tricks. Next Im going to check out your video on shooting and grading video in log.

If I plant to leave my mark2 on a tripod to record a wedding, what should my settings be? Also should I pick whole area AF? I don’t want my camera to jump from person to person, I just want it to stay on the bride and groom.
Absolutely amazing!!!!
Thank you!
I was literally searching for this. Perfect timing!
Awesome! I hope you find it helpful!
@@Josh_Sattin Josh can you do one for photos? Mine is on the way, but coming from a 6Dii and I usually use grids/area instead of spot focusing for moving subjects, dancers etc. So eye focus might not be for me with multiple dancers on stage, where an area of focus might be more dependable. I don't know. But also program buttons to switch between sticky eye focus and then back to area focus for group shots etc.. I've a lot to learn.
Unfortunately I really don't do much photography and that's why I don't talk about it on this channel.
@@Josh_Sattin no problem, thanks,

Great video 👏👏👏
Excellent video, I learned a few new things which I greatly appreciate. I setup the custom modes similar to yours so I will try them out in the coming days. It was interesting that even my menu options were different then yours in two cases. AF1 had another menu entry called Focus Mode AF at the bottom that didn't appear on your screen. Perhaps caused by different lens (I had RF 24-105/non L). I have the RF 24 1.8 which I think has the focus breathing option. If you were relatively nearby I would offer to meet up so you could take the lens through it's paces and try out the focus breathing. Thanks again!
You're welcome. Glad there was some helpful things in the video for you. Thanks for watching!
Thanks 🙏🏼 this helped a lot! Got my R6II today as an upgrade and extra camera. But off course my Eos R will be the extra now. 😅

I'm a 6D Mii user and I do photography, but I want to upgrade to a mirrorless camera because I want to do more video. I was thinking of Canon R6 Markii, but I see that the Sony a7IV has more features for recording. So I have decided to move to Sony because of the advantage it has in third party lenses too. Thanks for your videos, they are fantastic.

For the dial settings should the control wheel only work if you have the metering button half pressed?
Thank you very much.

Awesome. Trading in my R6 for the mark 2 this Tuesday.
Nice! Enjoy!
Here's youtube for the win again! FINALLY got my camera in the mail after an almost 2 month backorder, so of course I had to come and look for a video of the settings to configure, thanks Josh! My only issue that I've noticed with mine is that when I'm in manual mode, I CAN'T have both focus peaking and zebra on at the same time. I'll either need to turn the zebras off to use peaking, or turn peaking off to use zebra. In the video above I see that you've got both of them enabled at the same time. How'd you do that? I'd like to note that I AM using a EF 24-70 lens with the control ring adapter...if that's the root cause of the problem.
At 26 minutes they appear to be both off on the screen - fairly certain you can have one only on at a time, but I expect you have sorted this already as you enquired 8 months ago. Cheers.
Great Thx!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks!! I just got this camera heheh
You're welcome!
Do you know if it is possible to path the C1/C2/C3 settings through the custom buttons, so you don’t have to turn the dial? …if not, do you know if other canons do?
Thanks!
Really helpful video!
I am having trouble with the focus sometimes though. For my purposes i sometimes have to shoot through a fence and when it loses focus close by it is absolutely impossible to get it back. It is completely lost even when pointing it at something very far which it should not have any trouble focussing on (not through the fence just to get focus back) and it just fails to do so. I have to then go into photo mode and in that mode it can instantly get it back.
I have tried putting the focus speed to the maximum but it doesn't help.
Any ideas on what i can try?
Am I not able to record 4K 60FPS due to my SD being only V30? I only have half the options as you in the first part, 25 and 50fps.
Love this video. In Photo mode when you press movie record button what movie setting will go to and is there anyway to customize it? on My R5 it will automatically go to C3.
I have a slight band in the middle of my Canon R6 Mark ll and wanted to know if you can help me figure out why?
Hey Josh. Fantastic video thank you so much for this. Do you know by any chance why I only have 8 video sizes that display when i turn the camera in video mode and open the video size tab menu ? It's driving me crazy... Many thanks in advance !
I only have 8 file aize options eg 4k 50 fhd 50 and 25 theres no 24 or 60fps option? Can i turn that on some how? Im in the uk by the way
When enabling movie cropping, on the 16:9 sensors of the r6 is this close to 3:2 ?
I have a question, every time I put my camera in Log it says movies can be recorded but not transferred or saved
Question, I did all of this and watched your other videos but my ninja 5.2 just doesn't want to record. I don't know what I'm doing wrong
Quick question for you.. In photo mode, I want to be able to just press the record button and record video. I was told this will default to the video settings that are saved in move mode, in C3. So, I flip the camera to movie mode, set the exposure the way I want for video and save in c3. Great. Then, back to photo-mode and off I go taking photos. When I press the record button, it starts shooting video, but its not at all the settings I saved. Its in some type of auto mode? Its weird. How can I fix this?
You need to register the settings in C3. If you are in C3 and change settings it won't save them unless you register the settings in the menu.
Hey Josh! Yes, of course. For sure. Been doing that (been using C1 - C3 for a long time). But, on the R6 II apparently its not an option for the quick record button when in photo mode. :-( I wrote the same question over on Jan Wegener's channel and he wrote back saying its not supported on this camera. @@Josh_Sattin
So I can use one of the custom (C1-C3) modes for B-roll so that I don’t forget to change the shutter speed!!! Nice!!!
My Canon R6 mark ii only has 8 options. Do you know how to get the other options?
Canon r6 mkII is it possible to just pause a video recording?
If i am using a none IS Lens , will ibis still work ?
Hi! Awesome review! I have a question about video: When shooting in FullHD, is there any "line skipping" from the sensor or the frame is made of full read out and then downscaling? In old DSLRs, there was some line skipping, most noticeable as "aliasing" when shooting video with straight lines, for instance.
And in 4K, what does the "oversampling" exactly do? some kind of pixel binning?
Thank you very much!
The manufacturers are never clear about how they get their 1080p images if it is actually oversampled, pixel binned, line skipped, etc. The oversampling is a process where they use all of the pixels from the full resolution and convert it to 4K. Pixel binning and line skipping are two methods to throw away pixels to get down to 4K resolution while using less processing and quicker sensor readouts.
8:20 had a long discussion about this with a friend, the name is misleading as it sounds like the NR is only applied to high ISO, but it is on regardless of ISO. i did some tests on photo and it softens images even on ISO100.
Hello Josh... Why when I attach my Meike 50mm T2.1 Cinema Lense... is the RF version... I can´t record... I also have THe Canon R5C... and I don´t have a problem with that one... can you tell me what is it am I doing wrong? Great Tutorial video this one... thanks.

hi
1/8 aperture not appearing for me. why like that?
great video as always! is there an image quality difference between normal 4k and 4k with movie crop?
Thanks! More noise in crop mode. You can see it in this video. 4K24 and 4K60 act the same on the R6II.

Hey Josh. Thank you a lot for this great Video, helped me set up the R6Mk2, but I came across an issue and struggle a lot and I hope you have an answer for it :) I use for filming an external Monitor and when I use the Face or Eye Tracking Autofocus while Recording a few (3-5 People) sometimes it happens that the two Arrows appear and disappear randomly and sometimes it happens (while people are dancing or quickly got out of the frame and come back again) that the Focus loses the Object and I cannot put the focus back and need to stop the Recording. Can I re-arrange the Focus with an external Monitor while recording? Thanks in Advance!
There are no special settings for AF using an external monitor. On Canon, you can't change the AF settings during recording, but you can select objects to track using either the touch screen or the joystick. If there is more than one object, it's obvious that AF will be probably lost in some cases trying to focus on the right object. I suggest trying different tracking settings (e.g. speed of changing the object to track). It may resolve your problems to some extent.
hi josh, thanks for wonderdul walkthrough , may i know why i dont have 180 fps option in my camera although i used uhs-ii sdxc card, its only showing upto 150 fps.
thanks in advance
You are probably in PAL mode. I believe 180fps is only available when in NTSC.
First: great video, very helpfull!
But a question regarding the HDMI display output:
Does this mean, that when you use an external monitor without recording function, you can't use the touchscreen of the camera for selecting your object for auto-focus?
Thanks. Glad the video was helpful for you. If you have it set to output the display settings over HDMI, the LCD screen on the camera goes black. If you have the other setting where it outputs a clean HDMI the LCD screen works as usual.
Josh, this was great. Thank you.
I intend to use vintage lenses so I’ll be filming in manual mode and almost always from a tripod or fixed position.
Any tips or suggestions on manual mode video with the R6MarkII?
You're welcome. There are a few things. I do cover them in my full advanced user guide: ruclips.net/video/xmIl1GiSNyU/видео.html
Wonderful setup guide. A couple questions. What video features are unavailable in crop mode when shooting with a ff lens? Also can you disable ibis while enabling digital is only? Thank you.
I can't really think of any features that are unavailable in APSC mode off of the top of my head. Yes you can disable IBIS and have digital stabilization on. Here is a full breakdown of the Canon stabilization system: ruclips.net/video/pVnsGe5MO3E/видео.html
Hi, do you know if its possible to change exposure gradually with iso while recording? instead of changing it in hard adjustments? thanks!
As far as I know, you can only change the ISO by 1/3 stops. I generally leave it at the base ISO and adjust the exposure with aperture, ND or lighting.
Hey Josh, I really love this guide and I'm shooting video, too.
Maybe you could answer my question. I'm looking for a good video lens that supports the AI AF & maybe tracking stuff. I have three EF USM L-lenses (24-70 mm f/2.8, 70-200 mm f/2,8 and 50 mm f/1.4) and was wondering, if I should invest in a more cinematic 35 mm lens, like from Canon, SIRUI, Samyang ... Is there anything, you would recommend?
Thx for an answer!
If you are looking for the best autofocus performance I would recommend using native RF mount Canon lenses.
Help! I cannot turn Zebras on (I am NOT in Log mode). What is happening?
Do you know guys why there is no file mov option?
how can we activate auto video shooting so that everything is auto iso,f
Custom mode for 120 fps?
hello, how come I don't see the UHD 4K/60p option in the menu, only 50p? I have 2x 128 GB Kingston Canvas React Plus cards, set to redundancy mode in shooting. It's because I'm using PAL? So, to have 60p I have to set it to NTSC, although I live in Europe?
Yes, PAL will give you 50fps while NTSC will give you 60fps.
I seem to have an issue with recording on my R6 with a manual focus lens. Samyang 85mm T1.5. On camera the aperture indicator shows 'foo' which is fine I can use manual aperture. But the record button will not start recording. Any ideas how I can solve this please?
In custom menu (orange one) n°4, 4th line, please set "Release shutter w/o lens" = Enable (On). This allow shutter to work without lens detected (vintage lens)
Seems that the HD quality is very noisy but improves when set to cropmode.
Have you noticed this?
thank you so much for the Video! it helped me a lot. I just have a question about the crop mode. Isn't it better to crop in post?
You're welcome. It depends. For photos, it is often better to crop in post. For video, it's often better to use a crop mode (if there is one) since the camera records in 4K. Cropping in post will give you less than a 4K resolution but using the crop mode in camera will still give you the full 4K resolution. Using crop mode often can help with autofocus since the subject is bigger in the frame.
@@Josh_Sattin ah ok. I thought you also lost quality in crop mode. But in that case it makes a lot of sense, Thank so much! 😃
Could be very useful a video about how to use the Atomos V with this camera! ❤ Do you have other videos about the R6II? Then what do you think about the dxomark sensor ranking that put the R8 at the third position?? That’s means that the R6II has the same position?? Because has the same sensor.

Is there a way to use the R6ii for video recording only? I'm trying to get the maximum video content from 2 - 256G cards and so far, it's only 6 hrs of 4K IPB lite?
If you format the card in the camera before shooting it will maximize the recording time.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks for the help, I always format both cards before I start a shoot, but so far, I was able to get 4 hours of 4K lite video on card 2. The camera reported 6.35 hours of 4k lite all along. I also have the cards set to go from one to the other (I think). Anyways, we're getting there.
Hi Josh. I think that I saw in one of your videos the AF tracking option that does not focus on the background when the object goes out of the frame. I tried different settings but didn't get it. This is one of the most interesting features for me regarding R6II (which I own since yesterday). Do you know how to set it up? Thank you in advance
I think that is a "face only" autofocus feature but unfortunately it's only found in the cinema cameras, not the mirrorless cameras.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks for the reply. Damn, I was pretty sure that I saw this in some video about the R6II. That’s sad.
I finally found this feature. I was right. It can be set up on the R6 II. It's on the first page of AF settings. Movie Servo AF -> Subject detection AF -> detect only. After choosing "detect only" if you set AF to track when you go out of the frame, the focus will stay in the same position :)
great rundown thanks - shame it doesn't switch back to 4k after briefly using high framerate, and the archaic way canon still does whitebalance, bah. anyway, recently got the r6mkii and this vid helped me no end. More on the auto-focus as I took it out in anger recently and couldn't get my head around what it was trying to do (with R16mm lens, also have the drop-in adaptor and getting head around what actually works in AF focus-wise with my EF 16-35f4, 24-105f4 & 100-400...)
You're welcome. Yeah, I really wish Canon would update the video functionality in their hybrid cameras. It is long overdue.
Hi! I have a quetsion~ Does it mean if i were to video at iso 800 or 3200 "base"/"Native" iso i will get the best out of the camera based on colors n etc? :) thank you
The R6II does not technically have a dual base ISO. When a camera does have a dual base ISO, it should have similar noise and dynamic range at both ISO levels.
@@Josh_Sattin Ohh I see~ Thank you! Appreciate the reply :)
How does this compare to the R5C for video?
The R5C has a lot more going on. Full cinema menu system, more dynamic range, 8K60 raw internal, .... Here is a full review of the R5C: ruclips.net/video/mzPyd9pkBlI/видео.html
Why i dont have same menu and 60 fps on number 1
Got only 23.98 and 50 fps
I have just bought a cine-lens, IRIX 21mm to my Canon EOS R6 Mark II. However, my camera won´t take any picture or even make a video. I guess there should be some kind of settings, but what settings should i do to be able to use my cine-lens? With an ordinary Canon lens there is not any problem at all to take pictures or make a video. Does anyone have a tip what i should do, maybe what kind of settings?
Look for the "Release shutter without lens" option in the menu and turn that on.
I found it in the orange part of the menu, and now i can use my new lens. Thanks for the help. Cheers!@@Josh_Sattin
Hi everyone. I just made a video with the canon r6 mkII using Clog3. When I played it back in Lightroom it was completely unuseful: An extreme amount of grain. How can I correct this?

A quick question, Im not seeing 23fps. When high frame rate is on, I can choose from 100fps or 150fps. What I'm I doing wrong? :D
You are in PAL mode and need to change it to NTSC.
@@Josh_Sattin haha god damnit, just got to that point in the video. Sorry :D
I followed this video before shooting some video, but I have a problem. All the video is greyed out. When I turn off the c.log.3 in camera it stops that from happening. Is all that recorded stuff lost to the grey now?
What you are seeing is the Clog3 image. It needs to be graded, as explained in this video: ruclips.net/video/JCDaz1Ewirg/видео.html

Raw video settings sir
Raw is not possible until Atomos releases new firmware for their Ninja V and V+.
When I changed to c log 3 the video I got was very greyed/dulled. I'm a novice to these settings, but when I turned this off I got bright vivid and sharp images again. Any idea what I missed in the settings? FYI I shoot in a workshop with no natural light and 5500k LED lighting overhead. I always match my white balance to 5500k, which I dont think is the actual issue here so may be extraneous information. Any help would be appreciated!

@@Josh_Sattin thanks for your quick reply! One more question I had because you mentioned something that was alarming to me about using a monitor with this camera. You said you can't record to your internal SD card if you use a monitor? I have a Shinobi and was planning on using that to see myself better in front of the camera and still use the LCD screen to access the menu, but will I be able to record if I do this? Seems kind of dumb of Canon if true.
You can use an external monitor while recording internally, but the LCD screen on the camera will be off. It's really annoying.
@Josh Sattin is that a "feature" of all canon cameras? My M50 is the same way and I thought I could buy my way out of that issue.
Unfortunately it's a weird quirk in Canon Mirrorless cameras. If I recall correctly, the R5 and R allow you to see the LCD screen while putting out a signal over HDMI and recording internally.
can you explain why false color is quirky?
@@Josh_Sattin you said the false color was quirky.. why?
@@PhilipZilfo Sorry I realized I replied to the wrong comment. It's quirky because you have to have view assist and focus peaking turned off to use the false color in the R56II.
@@Josh_Sattin hahaha i figured you were responding to someone else.. yeah it sucks.. i set up two buttons to turn on false color and zebras and i’ve put the view assist button in the Q menu so i can quickly turn off view assist before i turn on false color. i wish you could could assign view assist to a button. can’t understand why they wouldn’t give that as an option. would be so much easier to just turn it off with one button and turn on false color.. two button presses.. or for example, just automatically disable view assist when false color is on and as soon as you turn it off view assist goes back on.. seems logical.. why not?
@@PhilipZilfo Just the quirks in Canon mirrorless cameras. There are others.

My menu only give me 4 options you show 8 and I don’t have all the setting options you have…..was there an update I need to do?
There definitely have been firmware updates. Are you in photo mode or video mode?
@@Josh_Sattin video……and I just bought it…..hmm
Are you in manual video mode?
I don't understand why I only have few options of 25fps and 50 fps not so much as you, why?
You are in PAL and not NTSC.
