Just bought my R6Mii today and I feel 100% confident for my first shoot with it!!! Thank you so much for a completely in-depth video with so much good information and knowledge.
Took me hours of studying this video and trying everything out BUT now I know how to run it. I have even set up 5 menus just for me. I am amazed with this.
Thanks very much. I had the R6 for a couple of years before changing yesterday to the mark ii. Your video taught me two things for which I am very grateful: 1 how to turn off that annoying display whenever the mode was changed and 2, that my much beloved Q menu is still available (and I’ve since discovered how to enable it)!
Outstanding video, thank you for taking the time to record it. My R6MII arrives in a few days and I learned a ton from the video. My only minor suggestion for future videos (or captioning this one if you wanted) was to tell users what features do NOT affect the raw captures. For example, Picture Styles, and WB (custom or otherwise) have no effect on the raw. So It's kind of useful for those of us shooting 100% raw to know what options in the menus we can ignore. But otherwise, I was a fantastic video and I plan to want your others on this camera. Again, thank you!
Have been using this camera a lot this last month and love it! I know it pretty well by now but decided to still watch all the way through and discovered some things i didn't know yet. Thank you!
@ 32:42 Display simulation: Options are apparently different after firmware upgrade 1.1.1; now showing “Exposure”, “Exposure only during DOF”, “Disable”
Very informative video. But under the wrench menu one option is missing and that is the "Save Cam Settings to Card". its actually very important for people using multiple bodies and want the same menu and other configurations in all their cam bodies.
Thank you and in photo mode you can see on the top of the screen how many photos you have left. You may have to cycle thru the display modes to see the one with all the camera info on the screen.
2:43 - I even thought it was a USB port in the battery compartment. It looks like one at first glance, but it's not. It's actually an extra comm port that the grip plugs into
I found the Exposure + DOF setting makes the viewfinder lag really bad so have to leave it off and use the DOF button when I need to check. Viewfinder is practically unusable with it on.
Very interesting and fair point! I did not notice that, because I switched it right away being so used to the Sony cameras which are like that by default. It's one of the main advantages to going mirrorless I feel like having that live preview all the time... Thank you for sharing and great info 👍
Thank you for the great tutorial! Have you been able to try a Canon R3? A comparison to the R6 Mark 2 would be appreciated given your supreme teaching skills! I have been using a Canon 1Dx Mark 2 for all my photo/video since 2016, but watching this video, it's time to buy a new system!
I have tried the R3 and it is an awesome beast, but it was my friends and I just played with it for a bit on a walk about type deal. However, I just purchased the NEW Canon R5 Mark II geni.us/7cMi5z , and will be going pretty hardcore with that in the upcoming weeks...
Amazin video. Thank you so much. The only thing that I could not make it work was the eye selection. When my camera pick an eye, it doesn't give me the option to switch from left to right. The arrows doesn't show to me.
Oh wow Pete, I was not aware of that stop motion software, but looks really cool! www.usa.canon.com/explore/stop-motion-animation-firmware The Canon R6 II is a fantastic camera for sure! I decided I'm not going to review it, because I don't have a time with it and my tutorials seam to be a better use of my limited time. WIth that being said I really enjoy the way the Canon cameras work and the colors are killer! The R6 is the best camera I have used from Canon since my beloved 5D Mark II... All the best, Jay
Nice video as a Beginners Guide. Still trying to understand a couple of menu items like 'Electronic full-time MF' - exactly what it means. Thanks for creating the video!
AWESOME User-guide Jason! This hekps lot of people who don't like to read, but learn from the video is much faster and easier. One question: Canon did not include "Sensor hot/stuch pixel remap" function, did they? I requested that feature since digital cameras suffer dead pixels over time, but Canon never gave a response. Panasonic did implement that in some cameras which is great to hide the dead pixels. Please let me know if Canon did it this time. Thank you so much!
Thanks Pablo :) To the best of my knowledge, no this camera does not have that feature. Non of the newer Canon's I have used have prompted me with that on turn-up, and I don't see it in the menu either... I've used the R6M2, R10, and now R50...
No I have not seen it on any of my cameras, but I have seen it in other videos over the years on youtube so it can happen..I feel like it's pretty rare and not that big of a worry honestly Pablo...
@@Jason_Hermann I also saw it, but also suffered that in one 5D2/5D3, and one person who works on astrophotography using big sensors cams told me it's something that one can expect over time, and asked me why Canon didn't implement a function to hide them, like Panasonic (at least did in some mirrorless cams, even very cheap, I have one G7 which costed about $450), and I said "I Don't know, Canon is very hard to implement even basic features. Sometimes only do it when competition makes pressure..."
@@PabloVazquezVisualArts Yeah, my Sony A74 has it and the new Sony ZV-E1 also has it as well. For Astro I can see this being more of an issue for sure. I still would not worry to much about it though, because you can always edit out a pixel if you have to in the future, although some work... I never noticed it on my 5d mark II and I used that camera a lot over the years! Perhaps if I did astro more I would have seen something..
Great informative video Jay! So after spending time with Canon do you like it better than Sony or about the same but in different ways? I’d be curious to hear your insights having used both. Thanks!
Hey there, and yeah I have been enjoying the Canon cameras for sure and I do prefer there color science when it comes to human skin tones and I also prefer the ergonomics over Sony. However, I still prefer the Sony sensor, because they have more dynamic range and more capable video features. I also prefer the way the Sony autofocus system works and I find it easier to use overall with more sharp shots. Sony's focus works better with humans and Canons actually works better with wildlife believe it or not. It's very strange how that can be, but it is true. If I were to get a Canon it would probably be the R5 Mark II when it comes out, because the R6 Mark II is not as good overall as my A7IV for the way I like to use the camera. Plus Canon needs way more lens options! With that being saif Canon is pumping out some great cameras and they are catching up to Sony really fast! In fact the current flagship Canon R3 could be the best camera for wildlife photography ever made to date it's so good...
@@Jason_Hermann thanks Jay! Really great to hear your thoughts on this. I appreciate you taking the time to respond! Yeah I’m very happy with Sony for my needs but I have a feeling the Canon R5 II is going to be a great camera for Canon users.
Dear Jason I watched the 21 minute setup video you did, and I'm back for more. I have yet to take the camera out! However, while copying your ideas I noticed that I cannot focus on the wall. Is this a problem? Is it because it is a plain colour with no 'edges'? It's a bit worrying, to be honest. Thanks, again. Jonathan
For that you would need to increase the depth of field a bit by raising the aperture number to like f/5.6 or something for example. Then focus normally on the center persons face in the group lets say and you should be good to go. The higher aperture number will make it so more stuff is sharp from front to back. The focus will insure where that sharpness "range" starts. This is known as depth of field. With larger groups I always raise the aperture up to make sure everyone is sharp front to back...
Well, I totally hear ya, but some people start off later in life and/ or are just in a really good financial situation when they start picking up an amazing hobby/ possible second job type skill... They do re-search and want to start with higher level gear, because life experience has taught them do it right the first time sort of thing... I feel like that is what is going on here for the most part Andre... All the best, Jay
Thanks Jay! A very good video! I bought one R6 MK II last week. When you move your camera (body only), do you notice any noise inside it? Did you also notice that something seems to be loose inside? is it normal? I have one 6D MK II and this not happens. Thanks!
Mechanic means there is a physical shutter mechanism that covers the sensor, electronic just shuts off the sensor for a second to simulate a shutter. Mechanical is better for high speed moving subjects for example.
Great tutorial! I have a question that I may have skipped over in the video. When I press the autofocus button on the camera with the shutter button and I look through the electronic viewfinder it turns black after a few seconds, is there a way to prevent the viewfinder turning black?
It would be nice if you can make a FUJIFILM X-H2s Quick Start Guide & How-To Use Camera and Beginners Guide - Set-Up, Menu's, How-To Use Camera. THANKS.
Hello I would like to know one thing about the Canon R6 Mark2, here I saw that he heats in 4K 50 I from 40 minutes, but does not heat in 25 i in 4 k. My question is, when it heats up in 50 i if I go immediately in 25 i, then continue the recording or it must cool anyway? If a owner of R6 Mark 2 can do the test SA would be cool thanks in advance
I was stunned to recently learn that the lens hood is not called a lens shade and that lens bag you got with the lens is not called a lens hood. I have worked in professional photography and with many other photographers in Canada for over 18 years and we all called it a lens shade not a hood. It shades the lens as the bag is a hood with a draw string just like a Hoody. Did the term lens shade go out of popularity at some point?
I have no idea, but if you go to purchase a lens hood in the USA that is what it is called in the stores... We seam to have some weird word overlap in our languages I would say, but it's all good 👍
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have had this camera since it released and have yet to use it with a client because I am so used to my 5D MarkIV controls and kept hitting the wrong buttons so I wasn't comfortable using it at a paid shoot. Focus breathing and lens distortion correction don t work together it s either one or the other😢
My 'Display simulation' menu doesn't have 'DOF+Exposure' option. How is it possible? I have the latest firmware 1.1.1 [Windows] installed. Is there a paid firmware for enhanced interface menu?
It says in the Caution area of this feature that it may not work with some lenses... cam.start.canon/en/C012/manual/html/UG-04_Shooting-1_0450.html Which lens are you using out of curiosity?
@@Jason_Hermann Hi Jason, Thanks for pointing this out. I have observed this with my EF primes. I don't have a RF lens to test this. Anyway, it doesn't matter for me if 'DOF+Exposure' is unavailable. Just wanted to know the reason.
Im running into the same problem again on my canon R6 Mark ii. Now its telling me i only have 4:52 of recording time. However, my memory card is completely empty? And the battery is full?
Hi Jason, thank you for putting this video out - its been super handy for getting better acquainted with my first camera! Quick question in regards to the manual focus setting. When I am in MF mode, the linear MF bar is stuck at the infinaty symbol and no matter how much I turn the focus ring, the slider will not move from the infinaty symbol and my subject never comes into focus. Is there perhaps a setting I need to enable to fix this or is the focus ring on my lens faulty? Thanks again!
It sounds like the focus ring on your lens is not working? The slider should move when you turn the lens ring one way or the other. I can't think of anything else...
@@Jason_Hermann ahh gotcha - thanks for the quick reply bro! My lens ring also rotates infinately and doesn't to have a start or end point, is that normal? If not, I will definatelty have to get canon to check it out. Cheers
Yeah, that is normal for auto focus lenses or zoom lenses in my experience, so I think your focus ring is not working. If you can try another lens that would help diagnose the problem...
You rushed through Preview AF, sugesting leaving it enabled, but that's the one that will continue hunting even when you're not pressing the focus button. This is Continuous AF on the mk1 which everyone advised disabling
Anyone else having trouble when uploading SD card? I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but all my photos are converted automatically to jpg. Before editing so I can’t upload them to Lightroom. Help!
Bought the MII and no matter which lens I put on this camera it will not let me autofocus. I’ve never had this issue with the R6 and the lenses themselves are fine, so I don’t know what’s happening but I’m genuinely freaking as I needed this camera to replace my 3rd for weddings. Any ideas? It just has MF as an option in menu, no option for auto even when the lens itself id switched to AF
I am so confused about the Lens Hood. I have this exact camera “Canon EOS R6 Mark II” and I ordered an EW-83N lens hood (like your says in the video) and the front of my camera says “RF 24-105mm” and I literally ordered an RF 24-105mm and it’s literally WAY too wide for the camera. Ordered from B&H online, on the receipt it says: “CANON EW-83N HOOD f/RF 24-105mm f/4L USM LN” And putting my camera lens in the hood is like me walking through a hallway! I don’t get it 🤣🤦🏾♂️ … Somebody help. 🤣💪🏾 I’d greatly appreciate it!!!
Canon makes 3 different RF 24-105mm lenses, are you sure it's the right lens and hood combo? Sounds like you might have gotten the L lens version which would be much larger... www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=RF%2024-105mm&sts=ma
Yes, the R6 bis a fantastic camera, you won't be disappointed and this guide should help you a lot regardless of a few features here and there, the basics are all the same as far as I know.
Try using Nikon or Sonys crappy menu, buttons and dials. Canon has the greatest menu layout and easiest to preform customisable button configurations. Canon ergonomics rule, all other manufacturers drool.
USB-C is considered to be full size and the newest/ best USB port option these days which is why all the newer cameras including the high end ones have it.

Did you format the card in the camera itself? What size card and what video settings do you have set?
I've just bought the R6 nit the mark 2 is there any difference in functions etc
Very similar, but yes the R6 Mark II has a few new things....
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
How do I turn off Live View?
why doesn't my green light come on when I plug in my r6II via USB C type cable?
how to put shutter mode (mechanical / electronic shutter) to q menu
I don't think you can: cam.start.canon/en/C012/manual/html/UG-01_Preparations_0130.html
@@Jason_Hermann thank you 🙂
Hi Jason, thank you for putting this video out - its been super handy for getting better acquainted with my first camera!
I like having it enabled, so by all means disable it if you prefer....
What about the false colour and zebra ???
False Color is here: 1:09:42 Zebra settings are located on page 7 of the first camera menu when in video mode...
@@Jason_Hermann thanks
I'm sorry but I don't have any idea if you checked in the camera menu and on the lens. I would call Canon tech support on that one!
Why no all-i feature in video ?
It's always something the cameras don't have....
Ordered from B&H online, on the receipt it says:
“CANON EW-83N HOOD f/RF 24-105mm f/4L USM LN”
And putting my camera lens in the hood is like me walking through a hallway!
@@Jason_Hermann I appreciate the reply. Real talk. Thank you Jason!

I could only afford r6 and hope basic functions are same
Yes, the R6 bis a fantastic camera, you won't be disappointed and this guide should help you a lot regardless of a few features here and there, the basics are all the same as far as I know.
Don't get me wrong I love Canon. It is my bread and butter. But the button layout and menu seem so old. 😢😢
Try using Nikon or Sonys crappy menu, buttons and dials.
Canon has the greatest menu layout and easiest to preform customisable button configurations. Canon ergonomics rule, all other manufacturers drool.
Disappointed to se it doesn’t have a full size USB port considering how much more $$ this is than the R8
USB-C is considered to be full size and the newest/ best USB port option these days which is why all the newer cameras including the high end ones have it.
