I have been torn between R6II & R8 and this pretty much sealed the deal, thank you. It gets pretty hot here too in SC and we do a lot of outside shooting.
Glad someone else is talking about this. Was recording short videos on Saturday and the camera was overheating and turning off and on itself. The screen was going crazy. Hey Rafael - can you please share exactly how you did this? What app did you use for livestreaming? I assume the camera was idle - if so, how did you get around the 30min idle timeout the camera has? My previous understanding of Canon cameras is that they only charged if they are off. Could you revisit this test by showing how do you connect the camera to get power delivery to work turned on?
I find the power delivery thing interesting too. Last night I used a R8 to record for 3 hours at 4K30. I used a dummy battery and AC adapter. I did stop it about halfway through for 5 minutes. But I never got above 4 bars.
yes, you got rid of one of the most hot issues, the battery. I also ordered my Dummy battery but i will connect it to an NP-F970 adapter, on top of the camera.
I've had my R8 for 5 days. The image quality is gorgeous but mine overheats all the time recording video at 4k/60, in doors in an air-conditioned studio, using the 24-105 F4.0 lens. The camera is on a tripod and out of the sunlight. I record off the HDMI port too so I'm not actually recording to the internal card. I can get about 20-25m before the temperature icon starts blinking. Super frustrating and even thought I love the focusing and image quality, I'm probably going to return it. I record guitar-instructional videos and use a mic so I'm not sure I can use a cooling fan because my mic would pick it up... I was previously using the canon M50 and never once had any type of temperature issues. Maybe it's time to see what Nikon and Sony are up to? (I know sacrilegious in this forum but i'm pretty disgusted that canon would release this camera with this type of issue)
I received my r8 last week, and the good news is that the camera does not heat up even without doing anything. I remember that the r6/r5 when they came out was heating up without recording when we set to 4k60…so when recording we had less time left before overheating. With the r8 I was able to do several hours of 4k60 filming sequences of 1-2mn each time, but just 20-25mn in continuous recording (the camera overheats quickly when it is still in our hands). So For my use (run and gun, wedding, low budget music video etc) I am not afraid to use 4k60 professionally, because I never film long sequences in 60fps… Batteries? No problem for me to use 4 batteries or powerbank…
As a wedding photographer, won't the lack of full mechanical shutter cause some banding issues at higher shutter speeds? Or when you get unlucky with the venue's artificial light? I'm interested in getting the R8 as a club photographer but the lack of mechanical shutter has been holding me back a bit

I noticed when removing a battery after some use that it was warm. It seems to me that the battery can be a significant source of heat as it discharges . . . and your USB-C powered camera test results suggest the same. Testing with a dummy battery would be instructive (and I might do so), as would testing when powering the R8 with a battery grip, as the batteries in that case would not be in the body of the camera per se.

Great video Josh - Thanks! Just a thought... if you purchased the aftermarket (and very inexpensive) battery grip for the R8 (same as the one for RP - yes it fits), you would: A/ Double the battery runtime and B/ potentially draw away some of the heat from the batteries being further away from inside the camera sensor/body? Great stuff Josh! Just the the video I was looking for. I shoot live soccer games while I play soccer, and I was looking into getting a B camera so that my A7IV can take a breather at times. I am invested in both the Canon and Sony ecosystem just like you so lenses are not a problem. It was between the R8, A7C and the FX30. I tested both the A7C and the FX30 and they both do fine with continuous recording at 4k 24p with one battery and no overheating. In fact the A7C records for 3 hours before the battery runs out. This test of yours completely rules out the R8 for me. Maybe I will add the R7 to the list along with the A7C and the FX30. I was so hoping the R8 can record for 1 hour and 30 minutes before overheating or battery running out. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for this super informative video. I've been doing my research as best I could on the R8, R6, R6mII, and R5 as I'll finally be taking the leap to mirrorless after shooting on a DSLR for 11 years now. Price is a factor, as the R8 is the cheapest, but the other mirrorless cameras aren't priced too badly on the used market either. I'm still a photographer at heart, but I'm getting into videography as well, so if I did plan on a long recording session, would I be able to record externally with something like a Ninja V and not have to worry about overheating whatsoever?
Usually using a Ninja V and recording externally will eliminate the overheating in these Canon cameras, but I haven't tested it. Also keep in mind that if you don't have the H.265 codec in your Ninja then you will be recording in Prores and those files are significantly larger.
OK Josh. I have a Canon R50 and they claim a run time of 15 min.s Also, I can use an external battery. I've found that a battery for a RC car has a lot of capacity, the correct voltage and will last quite a while.
I mean, if it does overheat, take a the Sony route of the ZV-E1 just feature it and use it for marketing. Spin it as a very short form 'vlogger' camera. Then bump the price up a 'lil for how well it matches that genre/niche. 😁
This is rubbish. The R8 bases it's overheating warnings on a temperature difference. So if you put in a fridge and then take it out it will show overheating as soon as you take it out and start filming. Equally if you take it out an ice cold aircon hotel to a hot environment it will show overheating. just let it acclimatise for a few minutes and it will be fine. It's not an overheating problem, it is a teperature difference problem. Also, the new firmware upgrade solves this anyway.
thank you for this very real test with useful information on the actual use of the R8 .... overheating can be an issue if you have to record a show in a theatre, an event or an interview or RUclips video in a warm environment .... and that has cooled me down on the purchase of this camera
Welcome. I have a Canon R8 There is a problem with me, which is that it does not always show the charging health level with a full charge, even if the percentage is very low If the battery is disconnected while recording video. The video was not saved
Most weddings, communions, parties are on location outdoors in the summer, in the middle of the heat of the day. You have no other choice this is the important moment that this camera must work without any problems! Then indoor shots where the sun shines on the camera are not a real benchmark! the only good solution is a fan that blows away the hot air! How can firmware solve a heat problem? It can only ensure that the protection against overheating is off. If the printed circuit board gets too hot in the camera, it must be cooled down with a fan, just like in a computer (see how many fans there are on a modern graphics card). In the other case, it will switch itself off if a too high temperature has been exceeded. If you now disable this protection or adjust the value via a software update instead of 80 degrees to 120 degrees, it will continue to work longer, but at what price? Therefore, using an external battery, external memory, opening all covers and screen is a small solution against a construction error!
I think overheating tests are pretty ridiculous. How many people will watch a 30 minute clip shot in 60fps? I've seen tests where cameras could shoot an hour/two hour long clip. But, why? When would you ever need to shoot for a straight hour? Or longer?
I will watch clips that long. And I have shot for that long too. Motorsports coverage. Maybe stop asking why we would want to do something. It's the wrong question. It shifts the burden to the user from the hardware.
@@utopian666 I've filmed weddings. Never did I ever need to shoot longer than a few minutes at a time. If you're shooting for an hour - or more - straight, you're wasting footage. It's not realistic at all.
@@POVwithRC You'll watch an hour long clip from one camera at a motor sports event? Television shows that broadcast such events don't hold on one shot for that long. You're not realistic.
Lot of community testing out there these R8 cameras have really really wonky software hard coded to detect change in temp NOT the actual temp. That said take a cold camera from inside AC to outdoors and you cant even shoot 5 mins 4k60 BUT leave it outside for 15 mins and you can shoot over 30 every time. Canon pulled yet another scummy move on the cameras to intentionally cripple them, as always. This can be repeated every single time.
Some dope on another channel argued for HOURS that the R8 was the bees knees for a new shooter. Idk, the prospect of any sort of overheat or battery life concerns just adds to the pile of 'nope' already inhabited by having to adapt obsolete glass to get a good deal.
People need to keep in mind how much this camera costs and be realistic about its capabilities. Its a great entry level full frame hybrid camera, but is not a high end professional video cameras.
@@Josh_Sattin Cost of buy-in is irrelevant if a new user thinks all they can buy are first party RF lenses (Which, if it is their first camera, they probably will). Canon is making their money one way or the other.
At this price the r8 is the only FF camera that offering FF 4k60 with great AF…it’s a chance to have it at this price…don’t understand people… This camera is not for people who want to film 2h 4k60 without stopping…but if you shoot 2-3mn clip, you can shoot like this all day long.
I dont know why anyone would buy a camera with thermal problems. I own a gh7 and it never overheats in any circumstances. It has a fan like any modern camera should.. Please stop Supporting companies who are to cheap to put a fan into their heat machines.

@@Josh_Sattin thanks for the reply... Wish it could atleast record automatically after the 2 hrs limit...
If I'm primarily using this for kpop concert photography (lots of burst mode). Would I still run into battery or overheating issues?
Unfortunately I have not tested this camera much with photography.
Very useful review. If you had to pick one between R7 & R8, which would you get?
Thanks! Luckily I don't have to pick one. I will probably be making a full video on this comparison because a lot of people have been asking me.
in 4k 60 shooting in shorter intervals how long did the camera last before overheating?
I mentioned this in the video that I didn't get the camera to overheat with shorter shooting intervals in 4K60 because I wasn't shooting long enough. It did heat up quickly though.
Hi Josh, did you test 4k 60fps crop mode?
I did not.
Did you shot the 4K 24 on Clog3 10bit?
Yes.
R8 with PD Powerbank can ran for ages, though R7 will definitely going for much longer with much bigger battery and smaller sensor.
@@ntsan Any recommendations for PD Powerbanks for the R8?
I thought the A7C had a video limit on it. Were you recording externally?
@@dcollash No internally. No record limit on the A7C.
@@QaziAdil any 27W or more PD will be able to provide power to R8 as long it have 9V3A, I am using Xiaomi Power Bank 10000mAh Pocket Edition Pro 33W atm
Had a hands on with this camera the other day. I loved how compact it was, but the UI felt very unintuitive (even for an R5 user), and it felt very odd with a 24-105 F4L due to its size. These tests of yours are really helpful for me though!
What do you mean "very odd with a 24-105L" ?
Yeah the small body size is awkward with the larger RF L lenses.
The battery last half an hour tops so what’s the use….?
Have you done a test using a dummy battery instead and then powering it via USB-C PD?
I mentioned this in the video.
@@Josh_Sattin I watched the whole video. I don't think you did. Did you do that test with a real battery inside or a dummy battery?
Real battery with USB-C. I don’t have a dummy battery for this camera.
you dont need dummy battery when using USB-C PD, it will not using internal battery anway when using PD power.
I've heard using a dummy battery helps with heat.
I mean, if it does overheat, take a the Sony route of the ZV-E1 just feature it and use it for marketing. Spin it as a very short form 'vlogger' camera. Then bump the price up a 'lil for how well it matches that genre/niche. 😁
Hahahaha
Thanks Josh! Great video.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
100% sure the fw update fixes this?
Thank you 🙂
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
thank you for this very real test with useful information on the actual use of the R8 .... overheating can be an issue if you have to record a show in a theatre, an event or an interview or RUclips video in a warm environment .... and that has cooled me down on the purchase of this camera
You're welcome. Glad the video was informative for you.
Very good information
Do you have Airplane Mode on to extend the battery life?
I did not, but I wasn't using bluteooth or wifi.
R8 can shoot 40 photos per second?
They make battery grips for it already. It extends runtimes by a lot
Well done...and I don't even have a Canon camera, and I enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching!
Welcome. I have a Canon R8 There is a problem with me, which is that it does not always show the charging health level with a full charge, even if the percentage is very low If the battery is disconnected while recording video. The video was not saved
I was waiting for this video thank you Josh, I think Canon made the choice between the R8 & R6 markII harder for us...
You’re welcome! Yeah, canon has a lot of options right now.
I got 2 bars of heat just playing with the settings..!
Hahahaha that sounds funny
Hook it to a power bank , easy Update i rewatched and you did mention a usb charger power
They intentionally crippled it with small battery. Look what Fujifilm done with xs20, the total opposite! They put large battery in small body!
I think overheating tests are pretty ridiculous. How many people will watch a 30 minute clip shot in 60fps? I've seen tests where cameras could shoot an hour/two hour long clip. But, why? When would you ever need to shoot for a straight hour? Or longer?
I discuss this in the video.
Weddings. Events.
20 min 4k60 at average temp is disappointing
At this price the r8 is the only FF camera that offering FF 4k60 with great AF…it’s a chance to have it at this price…don’t understand people…
This camera is not for people who want to film 2h 4k60 without stopping…but if you shoot 2-3mn clip, you can shoot like this all day long.

I dont know why anyone would buy a camera with thermal problems. I own a gh7 and it never overheats in any circumstances. It has a fan like any modern camera should.. Please stop Supporting companies who are to cheap to put a fan into their heat machines.
this is just the cheapest best option to have a full frame with a Canon body. Forget about video. This is really just for photographers.
False
Came across this interesting video concerning a power supply option for the Canon R8 ruclips.net/video/aIf66kEARC4/видео.html. Would be curious to see what the video run times are with this setup.
What a mess. Anyway, buy a legit video camera for videography instead.
