  • I figured out how to keep the Canon R8 from overheating. It’s not so much a hack or a fix as much is a technique. I’ve never had a canon camera behave like this.

    This video came up for me and it's funny because I agree this HAS to be whats going on. When I have mine in a cold car AC then go out into the 90+ it lasts like 5 mins but I'll sit there 30 mins with it out and battery out wondering wtf is going on here. Give it a go and it lasts 30+ mins easily. It has got to be range of change rather than actual temp and like the other comment here they have to be doing this on purpose for that sliding scale of sales numbers until it no longer matters say this fall these release a firmware and poof it will be gone. Shady practice but I wouldnt put it past them and it makes me consider other brands more tbh (even though they all seem to have a card up their sleeve to hurt or help certain things to ensure linear sales)

      Then only brand that seems to be pretty clear and without nasty tricks is Panasonic.

      @@babybackmaniacleftovers Yeah well, this just happened to me as well. Filmed in 4K 30 fps inside the house after the camera has been staying here for some hours, no problem whatsoever. Went to a show and had to wait outside for a while on about 10 degrees celsius and when I finally went inside and started recording in 4K 30 fos the warning showed up after like 10 minutes.

    It sounds like what the R5 had the same problems until they fixed it with firmware updates. Video Quality is excellent. Cheers!

    I get the overheating (bar icon) shooting photos (not videos) in Texas at 90F (Autumn) in direct sunlight with electronic shutter instead of 1st curtain (which is not an issue) with v. 1.1 recent update. This was consistent with a findings from BH&P written review of the R8.

    Thanks for the video. I rented this in November for an event, only photography shooting for 4 days in Florida - no issues with overheating. Decided to purchase the camera and take it to a very similar event last weekend, 4 days in Florida. The camera overheated when in standby from direct sunlight. I'm guessing it was a rapid temperature change like you are highlighting. Gutted I have to crutch around a brand new camera purchase based on atmosphere conditions. Not sure my rental firmware, but I updated my purchased camera to 1.2.0. Hopefully they fix this through software

    Interesting. I just was using mine today and it kept threatening me that it was overheating. It's 60-ish degrees here in Tampa today!

    4k60 without crop seems to be for slow motion so lower lenght clips, considering the size with no fan, this is "normal" that it is overheating.

    Hmm, interesting. Thinking back when mine first heated up, coming straight from inside to outside in direct sun it started overheating quickly (30min using stills)... i shutdown stood in shade for a bit, it cooled back down, i powered back up and no further issues, in the same direct sun as before.
    Now, mine started getting worse, heating up inside.. turns out I had a broken board, canon replaced. But the theory you talk about did appear to be true for me.
    Will see...

    This makes sense. When I shoor indoors, I have no overheating problems. But as soon as I go outside, it starts doing it. But if I start my shooting outside, it takes quite a long time to start overheating.

    If your theory on this is correct, just a firmware update will fix and improve a lot the perfomance regarding overheating. Thank you for the information.

    That’s crazy.. just had this happen in the middle of an interview. It makes sense what you said because it was in AC for two days.. the next day packed it up got onsite and over heated immediately. Later on (after it warmed up) no problems. Know I have to acclimate it.. I will have to charge an extra hour to my client. lol

    Would this camera have issues if you were traveling to a place like Disney World in Florida were you are constantly going from cool air conditioning inside, to hot humid air outside?

  • @subwarpspeed
    @subwarpspeed Год назад +2

    But yesterday you started out with 4k60fps, which after the 4k30fps didn't work either. Any speculation if acclimating it and running 4k60fps would work?
    A very hot day where I live is equivalent of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the record (90 years ago) in July was 100.6 degrees. My R8 is very new and I haven't really filmed with it yet.

    • @babybackmaniacleftovers
      @babybackmaniacleftovers  Год назад +2

      yesterday i walked outside and started filming and the camera was already halfway to “overheating” by the time I hit record.
      I’m pretty sure if I would’ve just left the camera outside like today for 30 minutes and then put it on 4K 60. It would have fine.
      I will test this out and if that’s not correct I will follow up with you.

      The only time I've seen the heat alarm was when the camera was brand new and I was going through the menus setting it up. Got two bars then. I was inside so that would also support theory that it is the difference in temperature that is alarming, not the (only) absolute.

    hmm.. That is interesting for sure! Thanks for letting us know this. I usually keep it around 75 in the house and it is 80's or so outside so I never had any hoverheating issues in Michigan, so I guess that explains why some do and I never have. Thank you for the info! Keep up the videos!😊😊

    I wonder if the overheating signal is dual purpose: one for actual processor temps and the other for humidity(condensation).

    • @babybackmaniacleftovers
      @babybackmaniacleftovers  Год назад

      If that’s the case, it’s still not good. Because no one would assume it’s humidity and condensation when it’s flashing and telling you it’s overheating and shutting down

      @@babybackmaniacleftovers yeah, I was just throwing that out there. I have an R8 as well, but I haven’t experienced the same issue as you. The hottest it’s been where I live is around 100 degrees but the humidity gets up to 90%.

    You may want to try "burping it" too bwahaha. It's acting like a baby!!
    But if you think about it, what a stroke of genius programming! A real way to cause the camera to overheat, then change t to normal with a firmware update and claim a big change and "fix" for the overheating. Suddenly the internet will have to focus on the R8 in a fresh new round of attention - marketing brilliance heh heh. It's like a built in way to get everyone to make a new video "testing" the R8 and it's new firmware all afresh again 😂

    I was taking my R6 out to shoot some late evening home exteriors (Still photos) for a friend and my camera would not work. It was a typical northern Calf. hot spell day. The next day, I talked to Canon repair and they said that I should send it in to the Southern Calif repair location. After a reasonable amount of time, I realized that Canon repair did not let me know that they received my camera. Again, I called Canon repair and after they put me on hold, they said that they DO HAVE my camera body but before the assign a technician to look at it, I need to pay a fee of $425! How do they know how much it will cost without looking at my camera!! Sounds fishy! - Joe Homsy

    Mine overheats within minutes just shooting stills. You are on to something as it seems worse if you go outside in the sun. But the outside in the sun would be 60 degrees. Then the battery just disappears in the heat.
    The pictures you can take are amazing but this is a terrible camera. Worrying about overheating not taking video not using the screen for 10 minutes of stills is garbage.

      Same here. I've filmed in 4k30 fps for like an hour and a half inside at 24 celsius without any issues. Then some days ago I had to attend a show where before the show started I had to wait outside in 10 celsius for like 10-15 minutes (the camera cooled down obviously). Then I went inside to like 20 celsius or something similar and the overheating icon started to show up after like 10 minutes.
