I hope Canon will make a firmware update to enable 8K-RAW LT 60fps when using the new battery without a powerbank in the R5C (for gimbal work), because we know that there is enough power in the battery for this. I also hope Canon will bring a firmware upgrade to run the R5ii in 8K-RAW LT 60 by using the older batteries but with an attached power bank. Both cases delyver enough power for 8K-RAW 60, so please, Canon jump over the cripple hammer tactic. I also hope to get the animal-AF from the C400 in the R5C, with this two small upgrades, the R5C would become much better. But right now, Canon won't do these steps as it would cut down the selling amount for the R5MKII.
Glad i held on to the order of the batteries when i cancelled the r5ii pre order. Didn't move ahead with the R5ii but i suspected the batteries will benefit the the r5c i already have.

Great info Josh! I’m glad I ordered 4 of these when they first got announced but I’m bummed I wasn’t able to use your links yet as I ordered it from canon. Next time I’ll be ordering through your links 🤙🏽
The reason why there's still battery available in photo mode, is most like due to the fact the cinema OS is programmed to run overscan sampling all the time, EVEN WHEN NOT SHOOTING mind you. it boggles my mind why the damn thing has to do this ALL the time. for those of you smart enough when NOT recording, hit the media Botton, and the overscan mode is turned off. A simple firmware upgrade, would save a whole bunch of energy, between takes. As i've mentioned, hit the MEDIA button between takes and it'll last longer. thanks for letting us know about the P battery, it's great to know.
Dang, this is awesome news! Might not have to rig a heavy vmount on my gimbal for real estate video shoots now and drop a few pounds haha. Thanks Josh!
Hi Josh! You are uncovering news that needs greater exposure. Awesome video! But question, based on your logic, does that mean if you deplete the LP-E6P battery in video mode on the R5C, and then switch over to photo mode, would you not have the bars in reserve as compared to the example you showed? Just making sure I grasped the concept.
Thank you Josh, this is really cool news for us R5c owner 👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰 and no need for a firmware update 🤗 Perhabs with a new firmware the power saving mode works also better 🤞
You’re welcome. The more I thought about this I’m not sure it will get better with a firmware update. The battery was dead in photo mode with and without the power saving mode on with the new battery. There are definitely things to help improve run time though like AF, stabilization, screen brightness, etc.
Thanks Josh. I've subscribed and watched tons of your videos, because I'm on the fence with my new camera purchase for video and you've covered most of the ones on my shortlist. For some reason the R5C is tempting me (could get one used locally for $2500), but no IBIS frightens me a little bit. Z6III on the other hand sounds promising, albeit a bit more expensive new in my local market and does not look that good in your tests. Then there is the S5IIX with its anamorphic appeal (but I should have to import it with no warranty) and the FX30 that sounds the most reasonable in terms of budget. I just want to shoot some indie short films (solo or with a couple of friends, narrative and some doc stuff)... do you have any personal recommendation after all your extensive experience and tests? I'm almost getting burnt out with so many options and reviews. Thanks again!
You're welcome. Yes there are a lot of options! Those are all good cameras that you mentioned and you can get good images out of any of them. There isn't a perfect camera. You need to weigh the pros/cons of each camera and figure out what is most important to you. Also think about which lenses you will need and which ecosystem makes the most sense for you.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks a lot. Since I really love anamorphic, I think I will be better served by a Lumix camera. But will keep weighting pros and cons as you said.
Watching this video it came to my mind a very old story with the Canon EOS 620, at the time, I made a discovery. When the camera was off, if I took the battery out, the battery it lasted longer. The battery lasted less if I left it in and the camera was off. I tried several times, it was just like that. It's been a long time, I don't have never experimented this fact with the latest generation machines. 😅
Great information. Your testing demonstrates that these new oem batteries are backwards-compatible with the R5C. Do we know if they’re backwards-compatible with any earlier RF bodies?
Ok I need your thoughts. Has the time from switching from video to photos improved since the R5C initially came out? I’ve seen videos in the past and they were about 7-8 seconds. I ask because I am finally going to the RF cameras for the first time. IMoney is really not too much of an issue tbh but if you had to choose an R5ii or a R5C, what would you pick. I do like taking pictures of my fam and do some edits here in there, I consider myself a decent photographer however I love doing video work the most.
Yes, the time has been improved in a firmware update. I believe it's now around 4 seconds or so for the R5C. I haven't made a full comparison between the R5II and R5C for video and I can't comment much on the photo side of things. The main differences are that the R5II has IBIS and Clog2. The R5C has a fan and won't overheat.
I’m interested to see if the new LP-E6P’s will allow autofocus in 8k 60 on the R5C? (I believe it needs 8amps for this? But sometimes real world operations are different?) Thanks again Josh!
Can you run 8k 60 without focus or aperture control on a lens that has them. Just thinking the vr 180 lens. Needs 8k 60. No autofocus or IS.... and I could probably survive with it stuck at F2.8 if it meant not having to attach power. Haven't bought either yet but about to.
Oh also off topic would you mind creating a video on your opinion and some of the features of the DJI Pocket 3 and how it works for your use case, editing workflow and giving your opinion on it? I know you mentioned it is great as subbing in on some shots with your regular camera footage and doesn’t look too far off. It would be great if you could make some dedicated content around the Pocket 3, if possible and if you have the time of course :) thank you so much.
Josh, would you say this makes the camera legitimate to use without a rig at this point? I’m between this camera and the Sony A7siii but I really don’t want to have to rig.
It always depends on the job and how you like to shoot. Personally I am often rigging up cameras because I like to have a monitor on it. But, I do think this makes the R5C a lot more usable in a stripped down situation.
Hi Josh, great video! I had just one additional thought. Would these new batteries work with the Canon BG-R10 battery grip to give 3hrs runtime with 2 of these batteries. I know they have brought out a new grip for the R5II so its not 100% it will work the same but it would be an interesting test for someone out there who has got the bits to test it.
Hi Josh, thanks for the info. My LP-E6N to V-Mount doesn't seem to work for my new R5 MII. Any thoughts as to why? Do you know if there's a new V-Mount adapter for the R5MII?
You're welcome. I'm sure the R5II is more particular about it's power sources, which is annoying. Canon does make an official dummy battery, but I'm not sure what you can connect it to.
Got my hands on a bunch of these and, come to find out, my little multi bay charger I had to charge four E6NH batteries at once is apparently not capable of charging the E6P batteries. Fine by me, I have a bunch of OEM chargers (I have an R6 II and I have killed-overvolted-an R5 C body, so I have three OEM chargers now).
Hm. Good find and solid analysis, but i'm still thinking Canon isn't telling us the whole story about the P batteries. I just bought my 2nd one today, i'll do some multimeter tests over the next week with the R5ii and R5C, see if this holds up. If your higher current req of the cinema BIOS theory is right, then the NH battery should be left with a higher voltage at shutoff compared to the P. If it isn't, Canon are lying about the capacity of their battery. Great video dude! PS. also curious about the smallrig LP-E6NH which has a 5A rating, as well as the LP-EL which was made for that one-off wonky speedlight, and from what i can remember also offers a higher discharge current rating
I just ordered a few LP-E6P batteries and updated the R5C firmware and it doesn't seem to be working. Camera will not power on. Any tips on what I'm missing here??
That's nice news, but for people (like me) who shots most of the time 4K 25p and 4K 50p I don't think there is a need for new batteries if the runtime is pretty much the same vs old batteries in power saving mode. Am I right? Thanks for video!
You're welcome. Well for me being able to not be locked in to power saving mode is great. I can use a higher luminance value on the EVF/LCD as well as the XLR audio stuff. Also I can switch into other modes/codecs/resolutions without having to turn power saving mode off.
What I'm curious about is that both LP-E6P and LP-E6NH have the same 2130mAh. Why does the video recording take longer? Or when using LP-E6P, did you turn off the over-sampling 8K function?
I haven't noticed anything and I'm not sure why there would be an issue. I used USB-C PD with the new battery in the R5II to record the back of the R5C for this video.
I don't have a R5, but I don't think there will be any run time changes on any other cameras other than the R5C because the two batteries have the same Wh.
This new battery is more interesting than the R5M2, I want to buy one right now, so I check the price here it's about $160~200😅 I guess better to wait for 3rd party battery...
The charger that they ship with the R5II is the same LC-E6 charger as before. Since they ship the LP-E6P batteries with the R5II I would say that they charge them accurately.
Very cool, but in all honesty this will not make me buy the new batteries. I’m using it with v-mounts all the time. Even when completely torn down, I have a v-mount with a belt clip or I have it set to power saving, which as I understand won’t improve at all. Good for those who only use it completely stripped down and with build in batteries
will it run 8k60p raw with AF with these batteries ? I haven’t seen that confirmed yet. if not hoping for a firmware update 🤞🏼 (😂 and clog-2 still but let’s be real, not happening)
@@Josh_Sattin thank you! feels like Canon probably won’t make that a reality here either but here’s hoping they want to sell out R5Cs and do a final big firmware push
No camera is perfect. The R5C is a beautiful machine but it needs to be run through V Mount battery for professional purposes. It's frustrating but that again, no camera is perfect.
Hi Josh! I did similar tests on my R6 II and got around 6% longer in 4k 24 from the NH OEM. I wonder if that would change with a firmware update? Off topic....We could get you to 100k SUBS if you pledge to shave your face at 100k. You may be unrecognizable, but I'm sure you could grow it back quick ;)
Canon is slowly creeping up and competing against Sony. Which the first full frame mirrorless for Sony was introduced in 2013 Sony a7R while canon is in 2018 EOS R. Wished canon put on full sized HDMI on R5C. They added the full hdmi for R5ii.

I'm sorry but I don't know what's going on. They work on my R5C which I show in this video. I am on firmware 1.0.7.1.
I do not mind buying new batteries but it sounds like I might need one of the new battery grips as well.
The knowledge!!!!!
Did you switch you R5C to Photo mode when the new battery was depleted, did it restart and how long did it run ?
Yes, when the LP-E6P battery died and I switched to photo mode it showed the battery was dead. This happened with both power saving turned off and on.
What I'm curious about is that both LP-E6P and LP-E6NH have the same 2130mAh. Why does the video recording take longer? Or when using LP-E6P, did you turn off the over-sampling 8K function?
I explain my theory about why that works in this video. There is no way to turn off the 8K oversampling in the R5C in 4K24 and 4K60.
Wow - this is amazing. That extra voltage makes a huge difference.
Do these new batteries also give a little extra runtime on any other Canon mirrorless cameras?
I don’t think they will.
I see canon also released an updated charger for the P batteries? Wondering if the old charger will work ok with these?
The charger that I received in the box with my R5II was the same charger that I already had.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks good to know. I noticed the new charger is LC-E6E - one that came with my R5C is LC-E6.
Told that you about that (6A continuous) on your podcast with your friend and you guys didn't took seriously
That's a game changer
Agreed!
How many minutes will Fhd be recorded?
Any idea if it allows for RAW 60fps? Thinking we’ll probably have to wait for a firmware update. Also, does it allow for usb c PD?
It does not work in 8K60. You still need the USB C PD for that.
@@Josh_Sattin any issues with the new batteries and PD via usb c?
To the R5C I mean
I haven't noticed anything and I'm not sure why there would be an issue. I used USB-C PD with the new battery in the R5II to record the back of the R5C for this video.
@@Josh_Sattin sorry don’t think I’m asking correctly. I mean does PD via usb c work with the new batteries in the R5C if needed
Hello..does it last 50%more even for a non video use on classic r5?
I haven't tried it, but I doubt it. If you listen to my theory about why it works for the R5C, that won't be applicable to the R5.
Thank you😊
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
@@Josh_Sattin Now I can get the battery grip 2 stes of these new batteries for the whole day :)
now we just need some magic to make the HDMI port NORMAL SIZE and don’t have to change systems to sony 😂
Haha!
The Japan website says it’s on back order 2-3months 😭😭😭
what about the new battery on the original R5?
I don't have a R5, but I don't think there will be any run time changes on any other cameras other than the R5C because the two batteries have the same Wh.
This new battery is more interesting than the R5M2, I want to buy one right now, so I check the price here it's about $160~200😅 I guess better to wait for 3rd party battery...
Anyone know if the old chargers will charge this battery to full charge? I can't find any info on Canon's site.
The charger that they ship with the R5II is the same LC-E6 charger as before. Since they ship the LP-E6P batteries with the R5II I would say that they charge them accurately.
@@Josh_Sattin good to know. I was afraid I needed a different charger for the higher capacity. Thanks for your response.
It will not run 8K60. You still need USB-C PD to enable that.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you! feels like Canon probably won’t make that a reality here either but here’s hoping they want to sell out R5Cs and do a final big firmware push
What? This is insane.
Yup!
2 hours, 50 minutes
8k, 24fps
2 lp-e6p batteries with battery grip
Only a few minutes left on a 2tb cfexpess card
No camera is perfect. The R5C is a beautiful machine but it needs to be run through V Mount battery for professional purposes. It's frustrating but that again, no camera is perfect.
Oh Josh do t give away all the secrets but but I want to use my third party battery lol …thanks bud
Hey just trying to help here.
@@Josh_Sattin I know, bro these subscribers can be brutal. They’ll buy a Rolls-Royce and put 87 octane gas in it.
Oh crap, what the guy was saying was true in the live!
Yup!
Haha, in my opinion the record time itself is the problem with the R5C, it's how fast it drains when not recording
🙌🙏
Yeah I don't see this making any difference with cameras other than the R5C because of the Cinema OS in the R5C.
Canon is slowly creeping up and competing against Sony. Which the first full frame mirrorless for Sony was introduced in 2013 Sony a7R while canon is in 2018 EOS R. Wished canon put on full sized HDMI on R5C. They added the full hdmi for R5ii.
How to get 100% more battery life ? Buy a second battery !
