      Looking to get an apsc camera. An apsc camera should be a traveler, compact, light camera with a good battery. There are options in canon r10, r50, r7, r100 etc etc. what are the differences among them?? Sony just has 1 up-to-date model a6700 and a plethora of lens options. Can't get simpler than that. Big win for Sony.

      Started off with an M50, moved up to an R6, 24-70L. 16, 35, 50, 85 non L. I like my Canon gear, I’m a CPS member. I’d never recommend Canon to anyone. They created a new hot shoe and the adapter for it is always out of stock. Well known concern about hot shoes coming loose, 400 dollar fix. Micro HDMI. 30 min record limit for my R6 that should have been at least extended to 45 mins via firmware. Clunky app. Overpriced battery grips. I could go on.

      This is a dumb take. Why do you own a c70 instead of whatever camera you owned before that? Because the tech gets better every year. Companies that request a certain camera, would never request c70. They request either arri or red or sometimes a high end sony camera. I worked with samsung and we shot stuff on iphone and fx3. Working with big brands says absolutely nothing about the camera being good or not. People often switch brands because their current brand is letting them down. That is why people are mostly switching to Sony and not from sony.

    I've been on Lumix for 7 years, having started with the G7 in late 2017 because it was a cheap 4K capable camera that provided more video support than anything else in its price range. That tiny camera carried me for 6 years until I upgraded to the G9ii last year. If I had all the money in the world I might just get an A7Siii or FX3, but Micro Four Thirds has saved me in size, weight and cost, and Lumix camera bodies never fail to steamroll their contemporaries when it comes to support for video shooters.
    Depth of field and low light performance are the two big limitations, but at the learning stage I'm at I feel that over-relying on bokeh can be a huge crutch, and being forced to light my scenes will teach me more than just always relying on ambient light. The dreams of shooting ultra-shallow-depth-of-field star-lit scenes shall be saved for another time.

    for me (someone who was CPS for years, shot canon for more than a decade, etc), the third-party lens debacle is like a microcosm of what's so frustrating about canon right now, and what makes me so anxious about investing in the canon ecosystem.
    it wasn't just that canon harmed a lot of manufacturers (and also obviously customers) by aggressively shutting down third-party lenses and adapters. canon caused serious damage to customers' trust in them and in the RF platform, and quite simply they haven't done anything to **actively** repair that trust. they seem to hope that the trust will simply regrow on its own. but that's not how it works after you've damaged things.
    if canon had reached out to manufacturers to help them develop third-party lenses and adapters, rather than dragging their feet and reluctantly allowing sigma (and maybe one other manufacturer?) to make a few lenses, then canon shooters like me might feel like the RF mount isn't a cul-de-sac of a lens platform. instead, i'm looking at the E mount and the L mount and i'm thinking those mounts are thriving.
    edit: i'll also say i upgraded to an RF body years ago, but i've been so reluctant to get RF lenses because i became apprehensive about the long-term value of RF lenses when i started hearing rumors about them shutting down third-party manufacturers, and i don't want to throw good money after bad. canon should have never precipitated this situation where people credibly feel that way about their lenses, and they should work to undo that. they shouldn't just coast along hoping things get better; they need to find a way to undo that atmosphere of dread they've created.

    • @FPVwineUK
      @FPVwineUK 3 месяца назад

    • @somewhatboxes
      @somewhatboxes 3 месяца назад +1

      @@FPVwineUK that, and: there's a lot to say for sigma and other lenses, which sometimes deliver image quality on par with L series lenses. and of course the lenses that are just strange experimentations that canon would never think or bother to implement (like weird probe lenses and stuff that Laowa has made). even if the image quality isn't at the level of sigma's ART series, i have plenty of strange and interesting lenses that simply bring a lot of character to shots, so to me it's not even about budget vs high-end; it's about the latitude to get a shot that's only available with a particular lens. canon doesn't seem to want to support that, and it isn't reassuring when they drag their feet and seem really put-upon just to allow a couple of third-party lenses intrude into what they appear to think is their domain

    The only time I hear about [insert manufacturer here] users switching to Sony is online. Every professional I know in real life has stuck with their stuff unless they were switching from DSLR to mirrorless, which most still stuck with their manufacturer. Canon is indeed like Apple. They let everyone else figure stuff out for them and then implement the best features. That's why they're so polished vs. early iterations from places like Sony.
    Since the R3/R5/R6(Especially R6II), the bodies are on par or better than anyone else. The R5 is still a BARGAIN imo if your main use case is photos. The RF glass is among the best in the industry(and the cost shows.) Only real criticism is that they should open up the lens mount to 3rd party glass. Then they'd basically have a perfect hardware ecosystem. It's also kind of odd that these video specific shooters keep expecting every body to fulfill that purpose. Canon themselves have said the R5 bodies(aside from C) are photo focused bodies with some video functionality.
    I've switched systems from Nikon(DSLR days), Fujifilm X series and GFX 50 bodies for studio stuff, and some Sony. My first Sony was the A6100 I think, then the A6300, then the A7R2(I think, may have been the first one), then the A7III. Had a mix of GM glass and 3rd party stuff. Mainly photos but a slight bit of video once I got the A7III. Every single body I had issues with and eventually gave up and moved to Canon when the R5 came out and I have not had an issue since. Sold off everything else and have been pleasantly surprised with the products. I think if I need a dedicated video rig I might splurge on the FX3(if budget allowed) or something but for photography/hybrid stuff, I just don't see how I could need more from a camera than what I have.

If I had to buy a new lens tomorrow I would get an EF lens just so that I can keep using the vND adapter.

    Two reasons for avoiding sony for me: I'm a landscape photographer just discovering video. So the primary reason for camera use is still photography. Sony's "star eater" problem is still very much an issue where black holes appear in bright stars in astrophotography/nightscapes. And there's still no focus bracketing feature in-camera while both Canon and Nikon have that.

    It looks like canon is losing the next generation of photographers,videographers and cinematographers. The sad thing is they don’t see it coming. People are starting out on EV1, A7…, A6.. and then moving on to FX3, FX6 and then fit in to big Cinema with the Venice, with Emount lenses all the way through including cinema glass. That used to be canon’s road map. Canon has killed the RF lens mount. It will never be what EF mount was it’s to late for them now. They will fall out of favor once the old timers leave. They have a terrible long term road map. They lost the documentary space already and never had the big cinema market presence. It not looking good for Canon. Their glass is too expensive to gain any traction to finance any further R&D. Business 101 customers have to buy it, like and want it. People are speaking with their wallets. Poor employees more lay-offs coming.

    The biggest reason is marketing. Canon's hardware is fantastic, to me the best in the industry. But Sony goes after RUclipsrs and influencers HARD... like way harder than all other camera companies combined. Sony has some decent specs in their cams, but when I've actually tried them, I just don't like them all that much.
    Also, people have been brainwashed into the whole "Sony listens to its customers and Canon doesn't" which is hogwash. Sony still has really bad LCDs from 15 years ago. Their menus are "OK" but they refused to listen to customers when it came to things like Firmwares, etc too. Meanwhile since Canon first put out the R, every new iteration has been answering most the requests that customers have had. The R5 from when it was released to where it was a couple years later was SO different. From added Clog 3 (R6 as well), to adding dual video recording (R6 too), to new codecs and bitrates, and actually fixing the overheating issue on the R5. Then the R6 II came out and addressed almost all of the shortcomings of the R6 original. No more record limits, no more overheating, dedicated photo/video switch, more custom modes, higher resolution, and so much more. Meanwhile Sony and Panasonic still only have 1.5x 4k60 crops for their competitors to the R6 II , and much slower photo bursts and much worse rolling shutter. Now the R5 II is out with Clog2, and new cinema codecs and a lot more.
    And the third party glass is starting to come slowly... at least for APSC. Meanwhile the great news is that unlike Nikon or Sony, Canon's DSLR glass adapts perfectly with no downsides and work as well as native RF glass in most cases.
    Who really cares about global shutter outside of the 3 people that need to shoot photos with flash in the sun. It has way more negatives than positives at this point.

    • @boundaryscience
      @boundaryscience 3 месяца назад +5

      The "Sony is all marketing," line is copium. The R5 got updates because they launched an early-access product that literally didn't do the thing it said it could do. I mean it did. For 5 minutes before it had to cool down for 45 minutes. The R had terrible autofocus, terrible battery life and one card slot at launch. It was essentially an A7II. It's not okay that they've cut out third-parties. There's no road-map for third-parties on full-frame but it's okay because it takes old lenses. Why buy the new system, then? Their lenses consistently cost more than the competition and are made of plastic. These are things that should bother you. This is a grift, and you're a mark.

    • @wanderbread4217
      @wanderbread4217 3 месяца назад +2

      @boundaryscience sony and canon quality is basically the same at the end of the day. Sony will always be more expensive when it comes to lenses and the lenses aren't worth the higher price. Many old old EF lenses are still going strong after many years. I know videoogrpahers that use Canon bc yes the cameras have a plastic body but that's lighter on a gimbal. Not to mention sonys video editing software has always been subpar. To say canon is better than sony or sony is better than canon is all opinions and preference at this point. The differences are very small and each manufacturer have cameras for different purposes.

However, I am very much infatuated with the different looks of Nikon and Sony which is why I purchased a Z6 and also an A7 3, both used. I wanted to test the systems and then make my decision of where to go full fledged.

So this is why I am going to be leaving Canon as soon as I can. Right now though I am looking for a replacement for the a7iii because I'm not going to keep it. The problem is other sony and nikon doesn't have good hybrids. A74 with trash cropped 4k aint working, A7s3, FX3 don't do good photos, yeah they shoot but 12mp is for 2002 days. While Z8 being good alternative hybrid to R5 or R5ii, z8 shitty screen, mediocre AF and REC2020 color space for NRAW ain't working for me. Z8 does overheat. Its not that famous in overheating as less people are using it. While there's these high resolution cousin of A74 like A7R5 or A7R4 are there, sony capped the video features, mediocre noise performance and codec features. The OG R5 had bad codecs but usability wise there's not a true hybrid that can still replace the OG R5. We are 99% satisfied with the camera, no issues, can shoot amazing photos and videos. Sony's hybrid path is long gone as they made 2 paths for video and photo. If they implement good hybrid on future A75 it will kill, A7R5, A7SIII, FX3, FX9 and burano. Even z8 sweep most of the floors of these cameras. C400 with triple base iso and RAW features wrecked Burano to its depths. Now Z6III with 6k raw😅😅 future for sony is hard. And nikon implementing all RED tech to its camera😊. So yeah we cant own seperate camera for photo and video so we dont care about Sony's caped video only camera.

    Mate, I’ve come to a point in my career where brand loyalty’s not the be-all and end-all anymore. I’m a part-time interior and real estate photographer while working full-time as a valuer here in Australia. Most of my clients don’t really give two hoots about camera specs, but they do seem to stick with brand names. My first pro camera was a Canon 5D2, and I busted my chops to get all the f2.8 zooms for the EF mount, plus a bunch of primes like the 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm. Back then, about 10-12 years ago, Canon was the dream, and I held onto that gear for years.
    Fast forward to today, I’m still using my EF lenses, but I’ve moved away from Canon professionally. My current setup revolves around Fuji - rocking the XT5 and XH2S with booster adapters for my full-frame EF zooms, and some EF APS-C glass as well. My go-to combo these days is the Fuji body paired with a Tokina EF 11-16mm f2.8 and Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. I still carry the Canon 70-200mm and 50mm f1.8 in the bag, just in case.
    I’ve dabbled with Sony too - still break out my original A7 for interior shots when the client needs them. But picking Fuji was more about the dollars and sense than getting caught up in specs. I’ve used the XT3 and XT4 before my current setup, bought them brand new, and after tax deductions, I even managed to sell them at a profit. Not heaps, but enough to pretty much score a free laptop thanks to the tax break. I do like Sony - have rented the FX3 and A7R5s for those high-end jobs - but I just can’t see the same tax perks with Sony as I do with Fuji. And don’t even get me started on the Fuji fanboys - they’re a whole other level!

    Canon user here for 30 years, own two R5's and loads of RF glass, and gotta say that Canon deserve a lot of hate for their arrogant attitude towards customers. 30 minute record limits on the R5, banning 3rd party lenses and now stopping third party battery compatibility with the R5 MK2 smacks of a company that is in a war against its customers rather than helping them to create better content.

    As a hobbyist/part time photographer, I left Canon and went back to Sony because Canon RF mounts are prohibatively expensive to build out a kit. Sony has an extensive third party and used selection. I still prefer Canon's ergonomics, and the menus probably are a bit more intuitive. But really Sony lets me actually build my kit and get the photos I need to get, without selling a kidney.

    There are 4 reasons why Sony has won (talking about fx3 over other canon cameras):
    1) 12800 ISO noiseless
    2) no overheating
    3) no crop on 4k slowmotion
    4) Not limited to third parties E-mount like the RF
    and they did everything else right. They fixed the colors with the S-log3, they have one of best autofocus, they fixed the menu, they fixed the battery life, they made a good camera.
    Panasonic had all the chances to get some market share with S5II and x, but 1) Crop on slowmotion 2) not much choice for lenses 3) still baaad autofocus 4) not 5 axis stabilization like sony's

    Great video! Love hearing your perspective on things. I have been a Canon user for over 20 years and don't see myself making a shift away fully. I've used sony several times over my career and always end up back at Canon. I use an R5 for my daily work and content creation and I love it. I do a mix of photo and video and I personally have never encountered overheating or anything like that even on longer shoots. I do think Sony makes some amazing gear and they have come along way. A lot of the numbers, I think, come from the flood of "content creators" and people buying Sony to make youtube channels or film stuff for IG. But I agree that Sony has been better about innovating and listening to the users.
    At the end of the day we use what fits us best and what we are most comfortable with. As I said, I will stick wtih Canon for what I do and rent gear as needed for bigger projects. It all depends on how we work and what we are doing. But if you are good at what you do, you can get a great image out of almost any camera these days,

It looked cleaner and sharper even if the color wasn't as good as Canon. Canon had/has better color, but Sony looks pro and with some color correction, it looks better.

    Great vid and addressed a lot of the things that frustrate me about canon. Only reason I haven't switched is because the R6 is the first camera I feel like I don't need to upgrade for what I do. It's so fast and nice to use and the images and video are amazing. I also used a Sony (a7r3) once and just didnt like it. The screen was awful, the autofocus was not great and the overall usability of the camera didn't feel as smooth and fast to use and don't even get me stated on that menu system. It was however very nice to hold and the images that came out of that thing were insane (when in focus). I just prefer a more smooth and intuitive user experience because otherwise I'm missing shots that could be bangers. Coming from Fuji to Canon I realised just how important that was.

If I had to go mirrorless I would consider canon first just because I have a lot of Ef lens… but I really like Nikon in that market and the medium format camera are extremely versatile but pricey.
