The picture quality with the R8 was amazing. I was surprised. But the reliability, stabilization and color of the R7 are winners for me. Also, I like a larger body, too. Great video!
Thanks Josh! Another R7 advantage: 3 custom modes vs. 2. On my R7 I use all 3 for both photo and video (4k24 fine, 4k60, FHD120). I wish every mode was a custom mode!
Tried these modes out based on your comment but was upset that these modes don't let you adjust shutter speed or aperture ;/. Most times when recording you always want to have your shutter speed set to double the framerate and having the camera do it automatically isn't the best.
you compensate that with f 1.8 or lower aperture only on expensive Prime L lenses. and it will give a much better output an saturation on lowlight conditions vs crop sensor cams. that's the only way. Its always about the "Glass" the Lens that's the factor in any cameras and its situations. I rather go a standard camera with the God Lens all day, then an expensive camera body with a kit lens. just bought the r8 and paired it with my old SIGMA PRIME 35MM 1.4 it and was like a heaven.

Hi bro! I have a question: I'm undecided about buying a Canon R7 or an R8. I'm mainly going to use the camera for 4K video, solely for my RUclips channel, and I’ll rarely be recording outside. Which do you think would be the better option? Question 2: The space where I record is very small, but I'm looking for a lens that makes it look spacious and blurs the background.
Good review, im thinking r6ii but i heard the r8 was close in specs when it comes to video, been doing some deep diving, rather by the r8 with some glass
Looking at R7 as an upgrade to the R50 for sport photography/videography, been wrestling with the R7 vs R8 seems like the only difference is the sensor and the burst mode. Which would you recommend for a beginner to intermediate photographer, I have good EF glass already.
Thanks for the video great as always. October 2022 i bought the R7 and i was really happy how it performs, February 2023 i sold the R7 and the R and bought the R6ii as it tick's all the boxes i need for my work. Last week i bought R7 again as B cam as you said it will depend on everyone workflow and their needs for me bigger battery and 2 cards slots is essential. Do you recommend any Lut in the marketfor the C-log 3 ?
The focal length of the lens doesn't necessarily affect the distortion, the distance between the subject and camera does, which is indirectly affected by the field of view. Since a 15mm focal length on a crop sensor has roughly the same field of view as 24mm on full frame, the perspective distortion is exactly the same. 15mm and 24mm on full frame have different amounts of distortion because the field of view is quite different. I feel like the "Full Frame vs APS-C Sensors" section is a bit misleading in this regard.
All good but the main reason why I stuck with R7 over R8 is the EP6N battery! I have the R5 and a bunch of spare batteries, so didn’t want to switch and stock smaller batteries for the R8/R10.
Thank you Josh for this and all your other Canon EOS videos for the R6ii, the R7 and R8. I think I have already decided against the R8 simply for the overheating issue which I am disappointed by. Even though I won't get it, I hope a firmware update addresses this. That leaves a choice between the R7 and the R6 Mk II. Man, I wish I had enough money for the R6ii but I don't, so the obvious choice is the R7. I am then giving up the battery grip, the full frame, better video specs and lens compatibility with my full-frame lenses. I do however gain the better overheating handling in 4K 60 and I already have a speedbooster. I think my mind is made up and the R7 will pair nicely with the EOS R, but I know something else will come sway me in the next few months...

R8 is a bit more expensive if you are not in the USA, I changed from R7 to R8 cause I want better low light and better 4k50p quality which I shoot a lot in, plus on powerbank it last all day of shoots, the weight savings for me is noticeable if you shoot on gimbal all day, if you add a fan R8 can run a lot longer in 4k50p I find (the same solution lots of E1 owner out there used).

Interesting comparison between two really different beasts - well made! While I like the idea of "cheap" full frame", I really love the R7 for reach (with 100-400 EF version ii), speed, battery life and ... IBIS with all the old EF non-IS stuff (like 2.8 macros, 2.0 100, 2.8 200 etc.). And finally auto balance helps a lot to keep the horizon level - and it really works with the IBIS actors, not with some software image degradation technique! So - at least in Germany - maybe I will step up to R6 ii (IBIS, battery compatibility) because R8 is 1800 vs. 2700 for R6ii and R6ii is available, R8 is not :) But... only if I really need a FF body with 4k.

Great video Josh, not surprising findings considering you already compared the R6mk2 to the R7. One thing comes to my mind, how does the R8 1080p holds to R7 line skipped 4K, cause that is also an option if the R8 overheats and when upscaled a lot of times 1080p looks good compared to the line-skipped 4K. I do presume the worse shadows DR in the R8 comes because of the faster readout, unfortunately that is the price I guess for those fast readout speeds without a stacked sensor.
Thanks! Unfortunately I didn't make that comparison. If I had to guess, the line skipped 4K would look better than the 1080p. To your point though, if upscaling and then uploading to RUclips, there might not be much of a difference.
Thanks a lot Josh ! Very complete vidéo 👍. One question : when the R8 is in "crop mode" : is there less overheating ? Or it doesn't matter ? Take Care 🤙
You're welcome! Unfortunately I didn't test that. In general though, if you are worried about overheating and longer run times, I wouldn't recommend the R8.
it definitely overheat less in crop mode cause it is not oversampling, but still not as long as R7 I find as Canon changed the overheating guage alogrithm for R8 which is a bit more aggressive vs R7 which is much more relaxed.
The R7 is a very balanced camera for its price. The R7 is my favorite camera. I have a 5D mark III and I haven't touched it in years. I also own a 90D and I used it more than my 5D too. My first dslr was my Canon T3i and I still love that first camera. I have no problem with APS-C. Except when I need a super wide angle. The best I can do is 18mm
I haven't used my 5dm3 in years and only used my S22 phone recently. I just sold the 5dm3 and bought an R8 and just purchased an RF 16 2.8. I'm going for small full frame.
You're welcome. The autofocus is pretty similar between the two cameras and that's why I didn't show it. In general I only will do autofocus comparisons when there is a difference.
Great video! I'm debating which one to get for my B camera to R6 II. R8 is same sensor but battery life, overheating and bad ergonomics is a big turn off but the R7 is APSC, I don't think m that's a problem but will It be harder to match the colours? I'm leaning more to R7 and I shoot wedding photography and videography, mainly video. Plus R7 is £200 cheaper in UK and I'd have to buy a V mount for R8
Well done! Will the extra resolution on the R7 really be an advantage for things like landscape photography? I have my doubts. I don't see a lot of landscape photogs on RUclips using crop sensor bodies.
Thanks! I'm not much of a photographer but I will take more resolution when I can get it. The only things that would be tough with the crop sensor would be getting a super wide shot or low light.
This is probably the best video about comparing these cameras! Thank you so much for your work! Please tell me, in the tests with overheating at Canon R8, which Sd Card was inserted? They say that if you use the UHS-2 V90, then there should be no overheating?
@@Josh_Sattin I wish you and your channel prosperity! Thank you for the prompt reply, but it is sad for me! However, the truth does not have to please us all))
Is lack of IBIS a deal-breaker if you're an aspiring filmmaker? I look at the "pinnacle" of cameras - Blackmagic - and they don't have IBIS or even autofocus. Going for the R8 for the full-frame sensor (for my daughter, an aspiring filmmaker).
Not really. IBIS can be a pro or a con depending on what is going on. Most cinema cameras don't have IBIS because filmmakers will rely on tripod, gimbals, etc. for stabilization.
Thanks for taking the time to put together all of this! Just a few remarks: - Overheating: You are the only one I found who reported overheating on the R8. - Record limit: How many people need to record for more than 2h straight? - Autofocus: the R8 beats the R7 by far on autofocus performance. Maybe you left this out because you shoot manual, but this should be relevant for a lot of people. - Rolling shutter: you tested this, and it is really bad on the R7 while a non-issue on the R8. However, you did not mention this at all in your summary. Is that not relevant? It seems that, reading through the comments, some of your viewers are making buying decisions based on your recommendation. I just wanted to give them a different perspective. My conclusion from all that I’ve read from all different kinds of sources: apart from battery life (however just an issue for video not photography), IBIS (however digital IS is very effective) and dual card slots, at the same price point, the R8 is a camera that provides better overall image quality (4K60, noise), better low light capabilities and better video functions (dedicated switch, false colors, etc.). Cheers!
Very informative video. No doubt, will be a tough decision for me. Till date was on APS-C, so having bending-ness more towards full frame. No IBIS can be compensated with lens stabilization, I guess. But small battery is a big issue. I m not a 4k user, so over heating hopefully out of the picture. Once again, a great comparison video. And will help me a lot to decide on choosing 7 or 8.
sorry I have not understand. Does r8 can make video 4k 60 fps in crop mode? because Ive seen limitation in manual about "hight frame rate modes" in crop mode and I am not sure if 60 is "high frame mode" for that case.
So im considering between the 2 bodies but the thing is i live and work in bali where i get quite hot. I'm not shooting any long form content but the overheating sounds like an issue. What do you think.
You can plug a USB C battery pack into the camera, but I doubt it would actually add charge to the battery if you are recording. I haven' tested this, but I think it would basically maintain the level in the internal battery.
Now that man can fly drones from an actual driver's seat, the next question for those drone developers is when are they going to hire actors from Mad Max for chase scenes?
As usual, you are fantastic, but I love my R7 for video work. It is a love camera perfect for my need. Agree that the only downside is not enough RF lenses.

For those looking for a clear verdict, I just came here to say that if you mainly prioritize video (and photo) quality above all else, then R8 is the clear winner. Don't even think about R7. I've seen the video stills comparison between the two, R7 seems to have an aggressive amount of anti-aliasing applied, making videos seem less crisp. Of course, there are big *buts* with the R8 like the battery life, which leads me to suggest other cameras like the Sony A6700.

I already own 3 Canon R7, I was looking for another camera for podcast recording... With your explanation, it seems, I'll take another R7
@keithwiebe1787 if I could afford an R5 or better yet an R5C I would. But that R7 really rocks.
Great video, thanks! Will definitely help me decide which one to buy. The only comparison I missed was autofocus.
You're welcome. The autofocus is pretty similar between the two cameras and that's why I didn't show it. In general I only will do autofocus comparisons when there is a difference.
Hi, Josh! I don't know why, but on 21:03 R7 looks blured or misfocused.
17:05 thats wut the control ring is for, both cameras give 2 dials, and the control ring fills out the exposure trio
Which one did you end up going with? I am also looking for a B camera for my R6 mark ii as a wedding videographer.
Man… This is great! This really helps! Thanks for the video!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
R7 takes it by far!
THANK YOU! This was exactly what I needed. Trying to figure out between the R7 and R8. Looks like the R7 is winning, for now.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Excellent detailed comparision Thank you for sharing your work
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
If your mainly using for videography which should i go with?
I like full mechanical shutter and joystick HOWEVER I bought r8 😂
This is probably the best video about comparing these cameras!
Thank you so much for your work!
Please tell me, in the tests with overheating at Canon R8, which Sd Card was inserted?
They say that if you use the UHS-2 V90, then there should be no overheating?
You're welcome. I use the Prograde V90 SD cards: geni.us/2n7XYa
Amazing, straight to the point video! Keep it up
Thanks. Will do!
I love how I always can easily concentrate on your beard to determine the image quality and sharpness lol
Thanks for taking the time to put together all of this!
Just a few remarks:
- Overheating: You are the only one I found who reported overheating on the R8.
Cheers!
I shoot a lot of live music videos and shoot over 2hrs almost every time I use it. Just one person, but it does apply to some.
Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
What i really want to know is the durability, something like weather selling and such
Really helpful & worth to watch. Good job!
Thank you!
Weird how the full frame camera is smaller than the APSC camera
R7 double card slot
why would use use a colour card when talking about 'detail shapness and noise' (5.10) why not a LPI chart.
Great comparison. Thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks foe the comparison. Now I'm certain that I'm going to get r8
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
I found my self jamming out to the into music
Yeah man!
😎
Does the r7 have false color or just the r8? thanks
The R7 does not have false color.
sorry I have not understand.
As mentioned in this video, the R7 has better heat management than the R8.
My wife and just started our channel and I have been struggling with options of cameras. Currently we use my IPhone.
If the R8 had the same LPE-6NH as my R7, I would carry both.
Yeah I really wish the R8 used the LPE6NH.
Does the R8 overheats in 1080?
Awesome video. Thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Can you plug the canon R7 into a battery pack via USB C to give it a top up when shooting?
You can plug a USB C battery pack into the camera, but I doubt it would actually add charge to the battery if you are recording. I haven' tested this, but I think it would basically maintain the level in the internal battery.
Do lp e10 and e12 batteries work with the r8?
The R8 uses LP-E17 batteries.
Can i use my old EF lens on R7 with the adapter?
Yes
How is the rolling shutter on r7?
I show that in this video.
Excellent video
I don’t know man….. I’m kinda liking that R7 but…… the R8 made you look thinner, I kinda need that
I feel like if you do not shoot a lot of low light situations or slow mo, the R7 just has too many perks to not take
Any difference in autofocus?
Not that I noticed.
g00d camara
hey did you try 4k fine?
Yes, there were many tests do during this video in 4K fine.
Now that man can fly drones from an actual driver's seat, the next question for those drone developers is when are they going to hire actors from Mad Max for chase scenes?
Just got my R7 yesterday thanks Josh!
Congrats on the R7. Thanks for watching!
As usual, you are fantastic, but I love my R7 for video work. It is a love camera perfect for my need. Agree that the only downside is not enough RF lenses.
Hey there, are you happy with the autofocus when recording 4K? This is the only reason I'm going to switch from my RP to the R7.
Thanks in advance!
@@swancollective i took this video last year with r7 and metabones speedbooster + ef70-200 2.8 II ruclips.net/video/PkkEPExJTRo/видео.html i think the autofokus tracking was really good even in that poor lighting.
@@FordSierraIS wow thank you, lookin mighty fine!
As of now, I'm pretty happy with my R7 :)
Does the rolling shutter in r7 bother you when recording video?
@@olympian1884haven't noticed it yet, I have to say
my R8 overheated in stills mode after 10 minutes in the sun on a 68°F day. The R7 definitely handles heat far better
In stills mode?!? Wow!
@@Josh_Sattin yeah i thought it was defective so i exchanged it for another one. Within 15 minutes it also forced shut down after shooting stills only in the sun. Sold it and bought and R6 instead. R6 performs beautifully same conditions
@phillip man your comment scared me,I had made my mind on the R8 seeing all the reviews on RUclips for filmmaking work. I stay in the tropics so outdoor temperatures are high, really not sure anymore if the r8 is a good idea now.
@@mylifecliched some people say theyve had no issues, although i doubt they tried shooting in the sun at all. Maybe its a batch issue or maybe theyll just fix it with a firmware update, who knows 🤷
@@phillipgregorymortoniii4113 Hope it's a batch issue,it is expected that oversampling 10 bit 4 k in a small body will overheat esp on higher frame rates and under the sun,but overheating in stills mode at this price I feel is worrisome.
Hopefully I will keep the r8 and not go for r7
Is a R8 1080p 120fps line skipped?
Unfortunately I have never seen any documentation to how Canon gets their 1080p image from the 6K sensor. We don’t know if it’s line skipped, pixel binned or oversampled.
Tnx Josh

Random q... do you still farm?
I am not currently farming.
@Josh Sattin thanks for reply! Do what you love to do sir! I refer to your farming videos every year at this time ! Buenos Dia sir
I make food, real estate, product videography/reels
What would you prefer, r7 or r8?
Either will work for most of what you are doing. For real estate I prefer a full frame camera.
The R7 is a professional camera, the R8 is a budget orientet FF camera.
I want a camera for vlogging with cinematic sequences like Peter Mckinnon or Matti Haapoja..... can u help me out with which camera to go for and about he lenses to... I am on a tight budget
I wanted to stick with canon. Sick of their cipple hammer to make their higher models more desirable. I sold my canon bodies and bought a lumix gh6. The autofocus is manageable but the features for the price is hard to beat. I bought an adapter to use my canon glass too
This video is as robust as your beard.
Thanks Brandon! I love you too!
Why people keep doing video review on photocamera. Canon market strategy is clear: this are great photocameras with very very basic video capabilities.
If you want a mirrorless camera for video look at anotehr brand.🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️
PS happy Canon user since 25 years
A reduction of video speed by 5 or 10 % would be handy
thats why i dont buy canon anymore, they even cripple the color science!... Boo
