For wildlife I use the R7 and R5. I shoot in EFCS on both most of the time so rolling shutter isn't a problem. I love the extra "reach" of the R7. It is also great to be able to use the battery in both cameras.
I love my R7, not sure what peoples problem is with it. I shoot semi professionally and have had zero problems. I see the wobble in photos but not a big deal to me at all. Video looks incredible as well.
I have the R8 as a backup/companion for my R3. I got tired of changing lenses when shooting sporting events and portraits They both have 24mp so the images are the same size and similar look. I am very surprised how well the R8 works. I shoot mostly kids baseball, but I found very little rolling shutter effect with baseballs and bats. Now I take the R8 whenever I want something light, and use the R8/R3 combination whenever I need more gear. It's funny how whenever I have those two cameras on my spider holster, everyone just moves aside and lets me to the front of everything!
Great comparison, I already had the R7 and wanted a full frame so pre ordered the R8, got tired of waiting so I bought the R6 mark II and am very happy with it.
Ibis in the camera or vibration compensation in the lens makes a much more pleasant experience through the viewfinder when you're out shooting regardless of the shutter speed you're using. When I half press the shutter the image freezes and I'm able to enjoy looking at the subject in its natural habitat even if I'm not actually taking the picture. When I do take the pictures I'm able to use a slower shutter speed and it's more pleasant regardless.
Finally getting my Velo Battery Grip for my R8 this week. I do have a dummy battery that I use all of the time with an external 100-watt power bank. Cheers!
For me, IBIS helps with stabilizing the EVF, making close-up and macro a lot easier, especially with non-stabilized lenses like the 180L. For the actual picture IBIS doesn’t do much, for the reasons you mentioned. I went with the R8 as a companion to my R5 and are very happy with it.
Interesting first impressions, but I would like to clarify that at 17:30 the effective focal length of the R7 with a 500mm lens is 800 mm (1.6 x 500mm) not 700 mm. Also, if you don't want the rolling shutter effect on the R7, you can very easily switch to electronic first curtain shutter or mechanical shutter. Personally, the limited reach, the absence of a joystick, the lack of IBIS, and the totally awkward placement of the photo/video switch on the R8 are deal breakers for me, but to each is own. Cheers,
Been waiting for this video, helped me a lot! Thank you. Probably going for the R7 now, traveling through Australia for a year soon and I really need a new camera for wildlife and landscape there. Japan, Canada and US afterwards, but should be fine with the R7 as well. Many told me to go with Fuji or Sony but my heart beats for Canon I guess.
I think you will be happy with the R7. Its big plus is its just and easy camera to use. Once set up its usually a one back button focus and hut the shutter. Have fun on your trip :)
Hello ! I often shot r7 with rf 800 and get enough sharp shots with 1/125 sec - 1280 mm reach! It's game changer - you can't do such shots with r8 for sure! Yes, r7 have terrible rolling shutter, but in 30 fps mode - I always get some nice shots from series
You can shoot that slow with the R8, but I would also say why would you. Hit rate will be poo at best. Test before making a claim. if you have tested and have results please send it our way. The IBIS isn't going to be that major unless you're very shaky or don't have access to a monopod to tripod as the lenses have plenty of IS.
@@WILDALASKA I don't use tripod or mono - no need with rf 100-400 and rf 800. If I have ISO 25600 with 1/500 I will shoot 1/125 or 1/100 to get at least ISO 6400 which is my highest usable ISO on R7

I initially wasn't going to but I had a LOT of questions about the 2 cameras which I understand as they can all be so confusing with Canon dropping like tons of cameras in the same year.
Same as. Any others I’ve been trying to choose which to buy. I’m going with the R8, I’m used to shooting full frame with my 5D4 and I prefer the button layout of the R8. IBIS I’m not worries about. Single card slot more of an issue but I don’t use cheap cards so that reduces the risk factor a little. R3 based AF and R6ii 24.2 sensor are major plus points.
The two questions I have are, "What lens are you using on your R5 while doing this video and is that a green screen with a gorgeous background or are you actually outside recording this? I am listening contently and seeing no movement of the branches or grass in the background. Great Information as usual! Cheers!
I think I stated the lenses in the video, but the r5 had the EF 500 F4 MKII lens attached. no wind so no movement. plus the video of the birds is in slow motion so any movement is extremely slow.
@@WILDALASKA I meant the camera that you were using to film yourself while you were sitting at the picnic table or what did you use when you were filming the Sandpipers while lying on those boulders? Also was it a Green Screen or the location at the picnic table. Great background but I saw no tree limbs or grass moving in the background.

I shoot with an old 7D and a 7D II for years now. I have had a lot of success with both cameras and still manage to capture almost everything with no problems at all. I am looking forward to getting a new camera and that would be the R7 since I have a good collection of lenses that work well already. In good lighting the R7 is an excellent piece. I'm hearing rumors of an R7 MKii around the corner. Only improvement I can say is needed is a stacked sensor for faster readout ( it will also provide better low light capabilities ). Would love to see it adopt the R6 MKii body style.
I agree with you about the video/camera switch on the right. Why do we need that switch anyway when you have two separate buttons for recording videos and the other one for stills? Cheers!
the switch is to change the settings underneath the hood. If you're in still it stores the settings and vice versa for the video. Would be bad if you're shooting 1/1600 in stills then slip to video and it would be at 1/1600 instead of 1/250 ( fro 120fps video) but yes there are probably better ways.

@@WILDALASKA ou sorry, I meant Raw Burst of course. Sure, but are they really usable? The AF speed of the R7 slows down considerably and has such a large rolling shutter that it is almost unusable for me.

I'd still like to see them both without the grip, and without the cage, I had a 5dmk3 that got left at home because of size and weight. Don't forget the R7 uses the same "Big Boy" Battery that your R5 / R6 use, the way I understand it!
Understand but that's why I stated at the beginning that without the grip I wouldn't really review the camera in depth due to those battery issues. That grip makes the camera a different beast for in the field work which is the center of the channel.
Sounds like Canon was still experimenting with parts of the R8 also. Why would they decide to equip a full-frame camera with a dinky 1000mAh point-n-shoot battery? Even with the battery grip, two don't equal the power of one LP-E6NH. I'm having sharpness issues with my R7 ATM, and was considering returning it for the R8, but I have something like 12 LP-E6/N batteries from past cameras.
@@WILDALASKA still struggling with the customization and the AF settings. I noticed that when shooting a cat eg, the AF jumps between the grass blades or the cat eyes when half of the face is hidden behind the blades. Ooof...
You have to divide the crop factor twice to remain square. 24/1.6/1.6 = 9.3MP. Likewise you multiple twice to get the full frame equivalent of an APSC sensor. So to have the same pixel density a FF version of the R7 would be around 83MP. 32.5*1.6*1.6.
@@jeffolson4731 The MPixel is a linear relationship not a squared relationship. APS is about half the size of full frame so just by the simple knowledge we know crop factor is approximatley 24mp/2 = 12mp (actual 15mp) and the equivalent R7 full frame density would be 32.5x2 = 65mp.
@@southbridgeforestHOANo, it is not linear. Not in this case. It is linear for crop factor, not sensor size. For sensor size you must use the square. I was looking for a website with the math but it isn't easy to find. The only place I could find halfway useful information is in the Canon R5 manual when shooting in crop mode. It states, correctly I might add, that in crop mode you have about a 17MP image. If it were linear, the image would be 28MP.
The lens would have to be 1.6x longer and actually more than that as its 24mp bs 32mp. So 500 on the r7 would have to have a 800-900 lens. I LOVE my R8, but for wildlife if it's serious. Im taking the r7 instead.
After a lot of research across brands and across types of cameras, I settled on the R7 and haven't looked back. RE. the rolling shutter. I have "C1" with electronic shutter and my preferred settings. On "C2" I have the same settings except mechanical shutter. With the mechanical shutter, I've not seen rolling shutter effect. The location of the mode dial on this camera is logical and easy to flip one up or one down without taking my eye off the viewfinder. I do have "C3" set up for macro photography. (no eye detect, spot focusing, spot metering, and a few other settings I would have to go back and see what I have written down and am too lazy to go find my notebook just now.
@@WILDALASKA I did not buy this grip due to three 'lackings' in design. They did not build in an Arca Swiss compatible attachment. There is no tripod socket for vertical use. That little tab on the front looks like it would conflict with a rotating tripod mount (Atoll C). I have smaller hands than you and opted for a 'half' cage that leaves the comfortable (to me) grip available to my right hand. My little finger fits on the body as it was designed. I also have an RP (40k clicks so far) and have no plans to buy another camera with the LP-E17 battery......period. To me, the best answer to your either/or question is 'both'. An R7 and an RP add up to the price of one R6mkII but today the budget friendly pair might be a refurbished original R6 and the R7 for a little more. BTW, I shoot more macro. It strikes me that the best wildlife photographers live in places (Alaska, Australia) with open expanses and clear views. We have trees to hinder birds and larger and brush to hide the bugs. It does make a difference.

don't disagree with your conclusions wrt wildlife but many people buy a camera for wildlife and landscape. The r8 is better if you have only one camera and shoot landscape as well, because a 16mm will be 16mm and the R8 is so much lighter than the r7 for packing. The only thing I don't like in r8 is the limit of c1 and c2 vs my r5 c1,c2,c3.
The problem with this video is it's so subjective. I FAR prefer the wheel around the joystick than the typical one at the top or the one lower on the body. It's far more natural to turn than making a very obvious and unnatural movement to reach for a dial further away. Your opinion: it's different, so go back to the inferior placement. My opinion: start putting them all around the joystick so it becomes the norm for Canon. The higher models could have a rear top wheel as well as the one around the joystick and have the 4 way buttons for 4 extra custom buttons. The R7 has way more buttons than the R6 for this reason.
Everything is a feel for each photographer and their workflow. I usually state this is how I tested for how I shoot and the best thing anyone can do before deciding on what to buy is to go rent and get hands on. Lot of money we spend.....
I probably won't review the Olympus cameras as I don't have the ability to rent them here in Anchorage. If Olympus ever reaches out and sends me a copy, I might. ;)

There's no overheating in stills on the R8. Only overheating is high resolution video and it still takes quite a bit of time to reach that overheat warnings.
A better comparison to the R8 is the R6 MKii, they feature the same sensor. The R6 MKii being priced higher than the R8 has markedly better performance and more features. However for those on a budget or newer to photography the R8 is an excellent entry level piece in the Full Frame marketplace.
Nice wasted comment ;) Watch any of the 40+ videos on the channel with both cameras and there are samples of images unedited on the depth of field discussion in this video.

You should be ok. Maybe grab a 1.4x extender and you won't miss it too much.

For that purpose then I would go R8. You will want the full frame for wider lenses.

Yes the r7 needs light and contrast. I don't see the MKII out until maybe late '25 or early'26 myself but who knows

Either will work
Ibis is the game changer in low light photography if you want sharpness and low noise.
Somewhat. I shoot a LOT of lowlight and have no issue with sharpness and noise on the R8 without IBIS.
@tarpara IBIS only helps if you have a shaky hand. You still need high shutter speed if you want to freeze a moving subject.
I mostly shoot small birds and for me the IBIS and crop reach are essential. If I was shooting larger wildlife I feel the R8 would suit better.

There is no focusing issue with the R7 that I have found. I haven't had any issue with the 2 R7's i've worked with.

The R8 actually does have a magnifying glass, by the rectangle button on the right. In settings can set 2x up to 10x

Not sure if you have talked about the pre-burst. It's actually the nr. one reason why I prefer the R8 over the R7

not really. Shutter shock is as bad. You have to learn how to use the camera and negate the rolling shutter and such

Coming from M43 Olympus, would I notice a significant bump in IQ if i switch to R7?

I don't know anything about the Olympus camera line. My suggestion wouldn't be to rent the r7 or r8 and see if they suit your needs.

Its actually closer to 9. I think I read or heard someone say 8 and it stuck in my head. its Mp x 0.38 to get the end mp in crop.

@@jeffolson4731 The MPixel is a linear relationship not a squared relationship. APS is about half the size of full frame so just by the simple knowledge we know crop factor is approximatley 24mp/2 = 12mp (actual 15mp) and the equivalent R7 full frame density would be 32.5x2 = 65mp.
@@southbridgeforestHOANo, it is not linear. Not in this case. It is linear for crop factor, not sensor size. For sensor size you must use the square. I was looking for a website with the math but it isn't easy to find. The only place I could find halfway useful information is in the Canon R5 manual when shooting in crop mode. It states, correctly I might add, that in crop mode you have about a 17MP image. If it were linear, the image would be 28MP.
Why not just get the R8 with a longer lens? At that point it would come down to pixel count no?
The lens would have to be 1.6x longer and actually more than that as its 24mp bs 32mp. So 500 on the r7 would have to have a 800-900 lens. I LOVE my R8, but for wildlife if it's serious. Im taking the r7 instead.

It is. I have been using my extenders too much at 1.4x ;)
After a lot of research across brands and across types of cameras, I settled on the R7 and haven't looked back. RE. the rolling shutter. I have "C1" with electronic shutter and my preferred settings. On "C2" I have the same settings except mechanical shutter. With the mechanical shutter, I've not seen rolling shutter effect. The location of the mode dial on this camera is logical and easy to flip one up or one down without taking my eye off the viewfinder. I do have "C3" set up for macro photography. (no eye detect, spot focusing, spot metering, and a few other settings I would have to go back and see what I have written down and am too lazy to go find my notebook just now.

Custom battery grips, makes a grip for the Canon R7

@@WILDALASKA I did not buy this grip due to three 'lackings' in design. They did not build in an Arca Swiss compatible attachment. There is no tripod socket for vertical use. That little tab on the front looks like it would conflict with a rotating tripod mount (Atoll C). I have smaller hands than you and opted for a 'half' cage that leaves the comfortable (to me) grip available to my right hand. My little finger fits on the body as it was designed. I also have an RP (40k clicks so far) and have no plans to buy another camera with the LP-E17 battery......period. To me, the best answer to your either/or question is 'both'. An R7 and an RP add up to the price of one R6mkII but today the budget friendly pair might be a refurbished original R6 and the R7 for a little more. BTW, I shoot more macro. It strikes me that the best wildlife photographers live in places (Alaska, Australia) with open expanses and clear views. We have trees to hinder birds and larger and brush to hide the bugs. It does make a difference.

don't disagree with your conclusions wrt wildlife but many people buy a camera for wildlife and landscape. The r8 is better if you have only one camera and shoot landscape as well, because a 16mm will be 16mm and the R8 is so much lighter than the r7 for packing. The only thing I don't like in r8 is the limit of c1 and c2 vs my r5 c1,c2,c3.

The problem with this video is it's so subjective. I FAR prefer the wheel around the joystick than the typical one at the top or the one lower on the body. It's far more natural to turn than making a very obvious and unnatural movement to reach for a dial further away. Your opinion: it's different, so go back to the inferior placement. My opinion: start putting them all around the joystick so it becomes the norm for Canon. The higher models could have a rear top wheel as well as the one around the joystick and have the 4 way buttons for 4 extra custom buttons. The R7 has way more buttons than the R6 for this reason.
Everything is a feel for each photographer and their workflow. I usually state this is how I tested for how I shoot and the best thing anyone can do before deciding on what to buy is to go rent and get hands on. Lot of money we spend.....

There's no overheating in stills on the R8. Only overheating is high resolution video and it still takes quite a bit of time to reach that overheat warnings.

R8 wins to me.
A better comparison to the R8 is the R6 MKii, they feature the same sensor. The R6 MKii being priced higher than the R8 has markedly better performance and more features.
However for those on a budget or newer to photography the R8 is an excellent entry level piece in the Full Frame marketplace.
