Hi again, Scott. I’m back to tell you that I DID end up ordering the Canon R8 with the RF100-400mm lens AND the Vello battery grip. I just wanted you to know that after setting up the R8 for wildlife, birds, and landscape and completing my first shake-down trial at a local wildlife sanctuary I AM DELIGHTED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS COMBO!!! The Vello grip worked flawlessly and allowed me to shoot a combination of 445 stills with several short videos over the course of 2hrs and I still showed 2-bars of battery life remaining. I DID periodically turn off the camera during several changes in venue when not sitting/standing and shooting. A note to other viewers who currently own the Canon RP. The upgrade to the R8 with the lens and grip I use above would be a terrific and economical upgrade to seriously consider. Thanks again, Scott. Much appreciated!!!

But I have to give it up to them that's awesome. Awesome awesome awesome I love it. PS, another way to get around that third party battery message is to just select no it is not a Canon battery. There was no stabilisation of any sort in those days and I was drilled by my father on how to hold the camera in a stable position and stay as still as possible when taking photos. It became second nature to me, and probably to most photographers in those days. When shooting long zoom or telephoto lenses, you will use a tripod or at a pinch, a monopod. Hey, would you mind letting me know what kind of battery life you get with the grip and 2 batteries? Approximately how many shots before you need to charge?
Hi, great video, I wanted to ask you if with this battery grip the shutter button for vertical images, the one that only works with the cable, is identical to the main button, that is, it activates the focus first and then the final shot. Thank you very much and congratulations again for your videos
I bought two of these from two different brands. It seems they all come from the same factory and are rebranded/repackaged by the sellers. Must have accessory indeed.
I remember how disappointed I was when I had ordered a T7i and expected a battery grip to be available for it. Only to discover that I was wrong wrong wrong. Eventually somebody did release a battery grip just like the one that you have mentioned here, but I think that I would rather have a more native battery grip that doesn't use a short little cable to connect the camera to the grip. Especially since you're only getting a shutter button and not an exposure wheel.
Hi Scott, hope you are well and healing up. I just got this grip for my R8 and it's working fantastically! Do you happen to know if it's still safe to charge the batteries through the camera's USB-C port?
Thank you so much for this ! It was much needed ! Although I couldn't find this specific brand and model in canada so I was wondering if any RP Grip would work with the R8 please ? Thanks...
thank you. I was wondering about this. glad to see it works so well. Only wished it took bigger batteries for even more shooting life. A couple of 18650 woudl of been cool!
Battery life is good with the grip. I sat for 4 hours in 15degree F weather shooting some swans and turned the camera and off during the times the swans slept and was at half battery when I got home. so it burnt though one battery basically. Id still own 4 batteries if your in the field for multi day adventures
I hope canon can come up with a battery grip extender for this camera that also lets you extend the sd card slots. Otherwise i think this might be the move
They didn't for the RP so I don't see why now. That's part of the exclusivity they want for their higher end cameras. The RP physical extender (no battery or so) works (and I think you can pull the SD card out of that one) but it's probably not what you were looking for.
Great!! Is this battery can be fit and use as well on the Canon Eos R50? Or if not, do you have any idea of witch battery grip will fit on the Canon eos r50. Thanks for the answer!!🙏
Great Video. I juts bought Canon R8. Thinking about getting RF 24-240 mm lens. Any suggestions. I use only for outdoor and family trips. Should I go for 24-105 F4 lens or this 24-240 is good enough? Thanks
Funny that mirrorless cameras were hyped as being smaller than DSLRs and now people have to buy something to make them bigger. And it's easier to carry an extra battery than to lug around a grip. Unless portrait orientation is of major importance and there's no need to adjust settings quickly, the battery grip is more trouble.
Thank you so much air for this video. I am from india i am curious to know wether this product is available on Amazon india ? And what are your views on using a PD power bank for continous supply of power while LIVE STREAMING ? DOES such continous supply over heats camera? Which power bank is best ?
I'm Planning to buy my first Camera, my mind is hovering over R and R8. My budget will be tight where I can invest for a camera body and maybe a single lens. I need a good all rounder camera. Since I don't have any gear. I'm not locked into any brands. What you think about sony a7 mark 2 it's half the price now does it worth it. And A7 mark 3 and Nikon Z6 Mark 2 is a little bit higher to R8 price. What should I choose in long run. I majorly take astrophotography and landscape photography with occasional portraits. Planning to do some VLogs and shoot occasional video too. Please reply and share your expertise by throwing some light on this decision making. Does the higher mega pixel 30.3 R will make such a difference or the R8 with less mega pixel but Digic X will compensate this or can look into investing in Sony or Nikon. I need to buy a camera which costs me less in the long run but should not compromise the quality.
The price of A7 Mark 2 is $1000, EOS R is $1340, EOS R8 is $1630, Nikon Z6 mark 2 is $1814, Sony Alpha A7 mark 3 is $1766, Sony Alpha A7R mark 3 is $2142 I need something which is as low as possible and maximum budget is around $1700 I just want to know which is better value and cost effective and will be worth investing for future proofing.
@@WILDALASKA First thanks a lot for taking time to reply back. since no availability of Aftermarket RF lens and higher costs, what about the Sony Alpha 7 Mark 2 which is the lowest price of all the models. and I'm searching for Sony Alpha 7R mark 2 and should I consider it if it is below $1300. I'm also getting an offer for Sony Alpha 7 Mark 3 at the same price of R8. Should I consider that?

Hello sir, since there is no aftermarket lens for the new R series canon and the price. I planned to go with Sony especially R series so that I can use APS-C lenses too. Looking to buy Sony Alpha A7R4 if not atleast A7R3
Hi, Scott. Thanks for this video as I am seriously interested in getting the R8 rather than the R7 since I already have an RP which uses the same batteries as the R8 which would save me some money. Plus; I prefer full-frame and have seen many other articles that say the R8 is suitable for wildlife photography. MY QUESTION IS: the R8 supports USB charging of the battery; so, will USB charging also work with the Vello 2-battery grip installed? Thanks very much for your response and I like your videos! I found you by researching for the R8. One ADDITIONAL QUESTION: have you used the budget RF 100-400 lens with the R8 and, if so, what are your thoughts about this combination for wildlife/bird/landscape photography?
The rf 100-400 is a fantastic lens especially for the money and it works great on the r8. best suggestion is go rent for yourself to see how it works for you, but I think it would be. great combo for what your looking for. and eye the battery charges by usb
@@WILDALASKA Thanks much, Scott! I think my transition from the RP to an R8 should be fairly smooth, given the camera layouts are so similar. So glad that to know that the camera batteries WILL charge via USB while the 2-battery grip is attached!! I’m stoked!!
I have the RP and same battery grip. Looking to upgrade to the R8 because the RP is very slow to focus and has a very limited feature set, but otherwise is a pretty good camera. How well does the R8 respond to input in real time? Is it worth the upgrade from the RP? Does the electronic first curtain shutter limit the usability that much? (Mostly concerned about banding issues with flash and skewing/bending of straight lines while panning, the internet seems to have a way of making mountains out of molehills) Nice job with the battery grip review!
I need a solution for the R7, any ideas? Its not so much the pro body feel I need it's when a heavy lens is attached to the R7 and you swing it up to your eye and you feel that the camera body might break/snap. I am sure a wider and firmer grip would make me feel much more confident. Keep the great content coming.
Hi Scott, i have a question, can the battery grip function without the cable? For me, it's kinda annoyed 😅, sorry if my English is bad, not my first language, hopefully you answer, thank you
Thanks and short of a hack type thing, no :( I would have thought by now someone would have made a grip for it. it the one thing that aggravates me about the r7.
Hey! Can the canon R8 compete with the Sony a7iii? Would it be worth buying it over the Sony a7iii? Which should I buy canon r8 or sony a7iii? Answer me!
So I bought this same exact grip for the r8, one thing I’ve noticed, when using two batteries in the slots….it drains both batteries instead draining one then switching to the other. Have u ever experienced that?
I used a third party battery grip on my RP and it always worked fine, and the price is much more friendly than an Canon BG :) I was wondering of you are planning to make comparison video between the R7 and the R8, I would be interested in how the cameras are different in "real life" scenarios, and if it is interesting for an R7 owner to get an R8 as extra camera.
do you mind me asking if you ever experienced overheating on the canon r8 while in STILLS mode? A bunch of people claim its overheating just while taking pictures while in direct sunlight, and its the one thing holding me back from my purchase... thanks so much!
I used the cooling fan for the R8 camera from Ulanzi CA25=20usd to help the R8 record 4k continuously for a long time without getting hot. Note that taking photos + recording at 4k30 does not get hot - only when recording at 4k 60 does it get hot and need to use a cooling fan.
Never had an overhear issue when taking stills. Nor an overheat in video. Video clips of wildlife in the field may be 2-3 min most times. And in studio work for 30+ minutes or so, it has never overheated.
This is the reason why the LP-E17 battery "shortcoming" of EOS R8 for me is not that big of a deal. The using of cable is the downside but in my case, I'm not using it anyway.
Is there a solution for decoupling the autofocus from the shutter button while using this grip? This is the only thing holding me back from purchasing the R8. Having a separate button for autofocus while in vertical orientation is a big deal for my work. The R6/R5 has the AF-ON and STAR buttons available on the grip for focusing, but as far as I know there is no way to replicate that on the R8. Unless if there's the ability to map AF to another nearby button in the R8's firmware? By the way, this video is so useful. Thank you, you've earned a sub!
@@WILDALASKA I'm not sure you understood my question. I'm asking specifically about autofocusing while vertical. How would I focus using the grip? Does it have a button built in for AF? It seems like it's just a shutter button and no other option
@@davidcuellar7414 Since a remote shutter (connected to cable) connector only is for shutter that's the limitation. I haven't looked around in the market but there could technically be done wirelessly. The Canon BR-E1 bluetooth remote shutter have an AF button. JJC have done their own version of it so some 3rd party at least know how to communicate via bluetooth to the camera. I've read about overheating issues with the R8 and one sad mitigation people write is to turn it into airplane mode so radios are deactivated. I would guess the WiFi is a component that draws power but if the bluetooth is deactivated then such a battery grip wouldn't have their functions.
Heres a good question. Do the cameras main buttons still work if you were to connect the battery grip and not use the cable? So technically I could have two batteries and just not use the grips shutter button?
I bought this for my wife and gave it to her as a Christmas present today. We went out shooting some Eagles and we came back and she's like how the hell do I get my card out? Oh yeah. I can foresee this being a pain in the ass. Like my R5 and my R7 has the card slots on the side. The RP that I do video with and my wife's are a of course have the card slot next to the battery. Which means you have to take the whole battery grip off every damn time you want to upload your pictures
It’s so an irritating they don’t make a grip for the R7, they made grips for their APSC 20D etc series way back in 2005 and that had an LCD the size of a postage stamp !!
So adding the extra battery gives you twice the battery life? Or do you have to switch the batteries around to get the extra battery life? Hope my question makes sense.
@@WILDALASKA awesome! This is a game changer, got the camera on release date, will definitely order the grip, you should add an affiliate link to the video
There is none as said. Canon have a grip that gives you a bit more space, to have your pinky finger on the camera. But it isn't for vertical or battery. But the reason I guess this works on the R8 is that canon wanted that extension to also work so they didn't change the bottom of the body.
@@johnsonguite R8, in contrast to e.g. RP, can be powered and not just charged via the USB-C port. You need a USB-PD so it can raise the voltage (at least on the RP). But! You might want to reconsider. For me it feels like the USB-C port and a cable sticking out will be very exposed and risk damage to more than the cable. You can get a dummy battery instead. Won't break any port in the camera if it gets snagged (unless whole camera takes a fall). There are variants that have a USB-A male plug, together with a step up voltage regulator so they can be used on regular USB 5volt. Or any wall plug for USB that doesn't have it's own cable.
I own 12 of these batteries which work with my Canon.R10. I spend multiple days in the wild where there is no electricity. For still images, I find that these batteries last fairly long, so if I had to purchase a Canon R8, the use of these batteries will not be a big deal.
Hi I am planning to buy R8 tomorrow and am still in confusion between the 2 choices, sony a 7 iii and Canon R8. Since you are user of canon R8 I will happy if your can share your experience with this camera. It's image quality , color science, it's movie codec(as it in not All Intra), and baout its heating issues. Which one will be good for me A7iii or R8? I am not professional but hobbiest. But I need the best camera for myself.both are coming within my budget. I would really appreciate it if you could help in this. Thank you
Hey guys I have a probably really simple question, I bought my R8 like a month ago and there's one thing that still confuse me. At minute 7:25 he press the shutter button and (I suppose it's on the 40fps capture) takes a lot of images. Now, the thing that confuses me it's exactly this. How is it possible that with the mechanical shutter he takes so many pics? Shouldn't be this mode only supported with the electronic shutter? If I seem dumb it's probably because I am, pls don't roast me for asking this question, it would be really appreciate it if someone could explain it to me. Thank you very much.
I started on an 80D so I’m already used to no IBIS!! I used the RP,R, currently have R10 and R8, I think I’m well use to it having IBIS but these are very capable cameras! I definitely want to get a battery grip for my r8 now!
I'm honestly annoyed at how small cameras are these days. I have large hands; a Nikon F5 is a comfy grip for me. A full size DSLR without grip already feels far too small for me, and any system camera just feels like a toy. So it's annoying that Canon chooses to make them uncomfortably small, with tiny, underpowered batteries. And then absolutely refuse to put out a proper battery grip themselves. It's nice that some companies offer some alternatives, but that cable... nah. That's just ghetto. I was considering an R8, but if that's the best you can get, it's a no-go for me.
I just tried the Smallrig foldable L bracket for the R8. All I had to do was remove the small extension on that L bracket that covers the battery door and it works perfectly on my R8 with the Vello grip. Sightly offset when in the foldable horizontal position, but it stay stable on my tripod. And an added benefit is I can slide the L bracket over slightly so in portrait mode I can still open and swivel the back screen.. @@WILDALASKA

Hi, great video, I wanted to ask you if with this battery grip the shutter button for vertical images, the one that only works with the cable, is identical to the main button, that is, it activates the focus first and then the final shot. Thank you very much and congratulations again for your videos
Thanks. I don't use the vertical shutter so not sure how the af works as the shutter works on the remote shutter cable.
Thanks so much. Just ordered mine from the USA. Not available in Australia
very cool. they have been out of stock for a but. Think we bought em out lol
Wow! Nice solution!!🙏
So, how much time in 4k video it can spend with this baterry grip exacly?
haven't tested.
I bought two of these from two different brands. It seems they all come from the same factory and are rebranded/repackaged by the sellers. Must have accessory indeed.
agree
I remember how disappointed I was when I had ordered a T7i and expected a battery grip to be available for it. Only to discover that I was wrong wrong wrong. Eventually somebody did release a battery grip just like the one that you have mentioned here, but I think that I would rather have a more native battery grip that doesn't use a short little cable to connect the camera to the grip. Especially since you're only getting a shutter button and not an exposure wheel.
👍
Thanks
Welcome
Hi Scott, hope you are well and healing up. I just got this grip for my R8 and it's working fantastically! Do you happen to know if it's still safe to charge the batteries through the camera's USB-C port?
works fine for me
Thanks for the video! I just ordered an R8. I suppose I should get one of these grips.
It makes the camera feel almost like an R3
@@WILDALASKA I've never used one of those, but I'll take your word for it.
Thank you so much for this ! It was much needed ! Although I couldn't find this specific brand and model in canada so I was wondering if any RP Grip would work with the R8 please ? Thanks...
yes
Give me a link...please
I hope canon can come up with a battery grip extender for this camera that also lets you extend the sd card slots. Otherwise i think this might be the move
Would be nice
They didn't for the RP so I don't see why now. That's part of the exclusivity they want for their higher end cameras. The RP physical extender (no battery or so) works (and I think you can pull the SD card out of that one) but it's probably not what you were looking for.
Perfect! One question. Do you by any chance know if the USB-c charging via de camera still works?
it works
@@WILDALASKA Even more perfect!! Thanks for your response!
Great!! Is this battery can be fit and use as well on the Canon Eos R50?
Or if not, do you have any idea of witch battery grip will fit on the Canon eos r50. Thanks for the answer!!🙏
Not that I know of
Great Video. I juts bought Canon R8. Thinking about getting RF 24-240 mm lens. Any suggestions. I use only for outdoor and family trips. Should I go for 24-105 F4 lens or this 24-240 is good enough? Thanks
Rent them both and see what you like. the 24-105 is a very good lens though
Battery grips are for a few things, more battery life, portrait shooting, and mainly better grip on the camera
Thank you so much air for this video. I am from india i am curious to know wether this product is available on Amazon india ? And what are your views on using a PD power bank for continous supply of power while LIVE STREAMING ? DOES such continous supply over heats camera? Which power bank is best ?

@WILDALASKA I am sorry, sir, I didn't get you
I'm Planning to buy my first Camera, my mind is hovering over R and R8.
The price of A7 Mark 2 is $1000,
EOS R is $1340,
EOS R8 is $1630,
Nikon Z6 mark 2 is $1814,
Sony Alpha A7 mark 3 is $1766,
Sony Alpha A7R mark 3 is $2142
I need something which is as low as possible and maximum budget is around $1700
I just want to know which is better value and cost effective and will be worth investing for future proofing.
in the 24 mp camera world the R8 would be my choice. great autofocus and all the video modes and not cropped
@@WILDALASKA it's really great that you respect and care your community and reply to 2 months old video. You earned a subscriber for life and will definitely recommend to all of my friends. Thanks a lot sir.
Great gear that perfectly fits R8, thanks
No problem 👍
I have the RP and same battery grip. Looking to upgrade to the R8 because the RP is very slow to focus and has a very limited feature set, but otherwise is a pretty good camera. How well does the R8 respond to input in real time? Is it worth the upgrade from the RP? Does the electronic first curtain shutter limit the usability that much? (Mostly concerned about banding issues with flash and skewing/bending of straight lines while panning, the internet seems to have a way of making mountains out of molehills) Nice job with the battery grip review!
Its a huge upgrade. FPS, Autofocus, resolutions, etc. list goes on and on.
here's the R8 review - ruclips.net/video/jX0l3pCR2hI/видео.html
@@WILDALASKA Thanks, I’m heading over there right now!
I completely agree, but I haven't seen any manufactured grips. Ive seen some hack videos, but I steer clear of most of that myself.
Hi Scott, i have a question, can the battery grip function without the cable? For me, it's kinda annoyed 😅, sorry if my English is bad, not my first language, hopefully you answer, thank you
Yes, you only need the cable if you want to use the vertical trigger.
thanks for review, i have a question, can we charge batteries while grip mounted with type c port ?
Yes
Do we have something similar for the R7? By the way I love your content!
Answer me!
I haven't shot the a7iii sorry. IM assuming the af is better on the R8
Thank you very much for this review!
Glad it was helpful!
So I bought this same exact grip for the r8, one thing I’ve noticed, when using two batteries in the slots….it drains both batteries instead draining one then switching to the other. Have u ever experienced that?
Haven't really noticed how the drain is. I usually have 40-50% battery power at end of the day when using it
I used a third party battery grip on my RP and it always worked fine, and the price is much more friendly than an Canon BG :) I was wondering of you are planning to make comparison video between the R7 and the R8, I would be interested in how the cameras are different in "real life" scenarios, and if it is interesting for an R7 owner to get an R8 as extra camera.
I have a r6MKII and R8 comparison and a R8 review. I plan on doing the r7 vs r8 video but they are different use cameras. maybe a week or so out.
Did you release the canon R8 vs R6ii comparison review already?
@@1stephenward friday
Even though the R7 and R8 are different cameras a review between them would be nice. Seen that they are in the same price point.
do you mind me asking if you ever experienced overheating on the canon r8 while in STILLS mode? A bunch of people claim its overheating just while taking pictures while in direct sunlight, and its the one thing holding me back from my purchase... thanks so much!
no overheating in stills or video in the field
@@WILDALASKA thank you!!
The cable stays out of the way more than I thought
Is there a solution for decoupling the autofocus from the shutter button while using this grip? This is the only thing holding me back from purchasing the R8. Having a separate button for autofocus while in vertical orientation is a big deal for my work.
The R6/R5 has the AF-ON and STAR buttons available on the grip for focusing, but as far as I know there is no way to replicate that on the R8. Unless if there's the ability to map AF to another nearby button in the R8's firmware?
By the way, this video is so useful. Thank you, you've earned a sub!
Thanks. Yes I have a setup video on the R8 in a video prior to this one
@@WILDALASKA I'm not sure you understood my question. I'm asking specifically about autofocusing while vertical. How would I focus using the grip? Does it have a button built in for AF? It seems like it's just a shutter button and no other option
@@davidcuellar7414 there sonly shutter. so you would use the cameras focus buttons
So technically I could have two batteries and just not use the grips shutter button?
yes. Thats how I use it
I bought this for my wife and gave it to her as a Christmas present today.
Yes that part is a pain. OR just plug a USB into the camera connected to your computer and pull them off that way.
is it still works good? i heard canon doesnt recognice some battery grips
Works great still
can you have a small rig cage on as well as the battery grip?
no
In my tests it can hit 950 shots per e17 batt isn't that bad anyway
I was getting more than that. at 40 fps I had over 2k images on the card and burnt through 1 battery
Will the batteries charge in the grip with usb -c charging? Thanks.
yes
It’s so an irritating they don’t make a grip for the R7, they made grips for their APSC 20D etc series way back in 2005 and that had an LCD the size of a postage stamp !!
👍
thanks for sharing this solution!
:)
has only 1 card slot. does it really make a difference to have 2?
Not sure what the question is, but it has only one which is more than enough
Will it work with Canon 200D as well?
no
So adding the extra battery gives you twice the battery life? Or do you have to switch the batteries around to get the extra battery life? Hope my question makes sense.
both batteries together act like one on a grip for double battery life vs 1 battery
@@WILDALASKA awesome! This is a game changer, got the camera on release date, will definitely order the grip, you should add an affiliate link to the video

What is canon equivalent grip for this other than 3rd party . I hope to hear soon. Thanks
none
There is none as said. Canon have a grip that gives you a bit more space, to have your pinky finger on the camera. But it isn't for vertical or battery. But the reason I guess this works on the R8 is that canon wanted that extension to also work so they didn't change the bottom of the body.

yup
@@WILDALASKA thanks for the reply... As i plan long videos, i can consider the R8 now...

Is it possible to hot-swap a single battery?
not sure, but I wouldn't try it. sounds bad ;)
I own 12 of these batteries which work with my Canon.R10. I spend multiple days in the wild where there is no electricity. For still images, I find that these batteries last fairly long, so if I had to purchase a Canon R8, the use of these batteries will not be a big deal.
Hi
I am planning to buy R8 tomorrow and am still in confusion between the 2 choices, sony a 7 iii and Canon R8.
Since you are user of canon R8 I will happy if your can share your experience with this camera.

Well for starters the r8 doesn't have a mechanical shutter and second the camera was in full electronic and in H+ which is 40fps.

Ok the cable is only if you want to use the vert shutter. And yes a lot of the mirrorless cameras are small, but the z8,z9, r5, r6 etc aren't small.
Will this fit in the r10?
nope
@@WILDALASKA thank you!
Have you found an L bracket that fits this grip?
haven't looked for one. sorry.
