      PhatCrayonz Yes I’m tired of seeing all the ‘reviews’ of the R5, R6 and Sony A7s3( not that I’m wanting a Sony) which are 99% video biased, then as an afterthought “ oh they can do some stills as well”.

    Good points, but one........'the image quality is not much different that the 5d Mkiv'
    I both sell and use the EOS R and though a superficial look at an image may not
    be much different from the excellent 5D mk iv , if one looks a bit more carefully ,
    the lenses that the new mirrorless design uses are SUPERB and substantially
    sharper and better in many ways than the lenses that the 5D series uses .
    This design has allowed Canon to engineer lenses that producing amazing
    images with far fewer drawbacks than older EF lenses ......
    including both center and peripheral sharpness
    and reduction of may chromatic and other aberrations.
    Truly all of the cameras we use today are pretty spectacular by the standards
    of even a few years ago, but the R series is going to bring optical performance
    up a substantial notch ! Cheers .

    The EOS does indeed have a intervalometer/time-lapse feature. This is directly from the Canon website: "The EOS R includes built-in intervalometer functions to record and compile time-lapse movies. Record time-lapse in either 4K UHD or Full HD using intervals from two seconds up to 99 hours, 59 minutes long with finished durations of up to 3600 frames. Time-lapse movies are assembled in-camera and produce your choice of a finished 3840x2160 or 1920x1080 image sequence."

    • @jamesfoureight9879
      @jamesfoureight9879 4 года назад

      The time lapse feature compiles the photos for you, he did mention that. To take a time lapse sequence and keep the photo files separate for the sake of building a time lapse in post you will need an external intervalometer. So it would be nice if the time lapse feature gave the option of compiling the photos internally or not.

    I've had the EOS R for a bit over a month and absolutely love it. I moved over from the 6D2 and have no regrets. Admittedly, that weird touchbar has been something I just avoid altogether. But otherwise, I've loved this camera for far better long exposure photos, landscapes and a few portraits. I appreciate this thoughtful, reasonable review of the camera. It definitely isn't going to suit everyone, but no product ever will.

      Coming from a 6D it's a big upgrade for me, I set the touch bar to control aperture. I set it to 1 second hold to activate the bar to avoid accidentally changing settings. It's been the best feature for me.

  • @TheVFXbyArt

    07:00 Ok “Touchbar-gate”...😝.
    As a fellow 5D3 user, but also an eos-M5 abuser, i can understand why your thumb may rest on the touchbar. But having used the touch-drag M3/5 for the past 3 years, canon has essentially trained me to rest my thumb on the touchscreen. So much so that have tried touch dragging on the 5D3! It felt like I was playing space invaders when I would go back to the joystick! When I first held the R, my thumb went to the touch drag! Thats what 2 years of “training” did! Mind you that joystick has been my fav since the 2005 20D! Its what made me spend more for a 7D in 2011 instead of the sudden joystickless XXD’s that were coming out at the time!
    Back to the touchbar:
    For shooting I have the 2 sec delay and use it for AF modes.
    For playback its always on, and i use swipe for the image forward and back (its faster than the touchscreen, #DualDigicChips4nextR). Left tap is image rating, rt tap is (un)protect images.
    Makes on set image culling lighting fast vs mushing buttons!
    ❤️❤️#Learn2LuvTouchbar❤️❤️
    😝😝
    Seriously, give yourself time to train. I still want the joystick and thumb rotary back since on the future 5R (you heard it here first!), its more options that would make the camera more lovable. But touch-drag and touchbar are the future.

    • @domtomas1178
      @domtomas1178 5 лет назад

      Been debating the whole loss of Joystick conundrum since the R was announced, I've been using a 7Dii and 5Diii for the last 4 years and I am struggling to see how the touchscreen is a good idea. When looking thought the viewfinder don't you bump into your cheek with your thumb?

  • @SteveCoutts
    @SteveCoutts 5 лет назад +1

    I am quite late to the EOS R party. I just recently started looking at it seriously. The 5D3 is my main photography camera. It's trustworthy and dependable - an absolute workhorse. I bought an 80D for video work, which is does well and it also became my backup shooter mainly because the autofocus is crisp and accurate. Of course though, the control layout of the 80D varies greatly from the 5D3 so it's not optimal switching back and forth during event shooting. The EOS R feels more like my 5D3 minus the joystick. I have contemplated adding a 5D4 to the lineup and relegating 5D3 to backup. I think you're right, EOS R is a great start but if Canons releases a "pro" body with ergonomics matching their current pro bodies and fix a few of the other lacking bits for pro photographers, it will be a big winner. Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful review.

      I notice that on youtube every fifth 'next' video after a camera review is a Tony Northrup video. Sometimes Tony and Chelsea seem mundane at other times they talk too much about their sponsor like square space. Yet they manage to command more viewership. I liked this review. Best of luck.

    I love the EOS R! My past Canon were the 6D, the 80D, the 6D2, and the 5D4. It did take a bit of adjustment to go the EOS R in terms of the UI and ergonomics but now it feels so natural. I love the control ring so much! I actually went back to my friend's 80D to teach her photography basics and it took me a bit to remember how to do things on the 80D.

      @@onlysublime this is not what I asked. I asked whether the face tracking actually focuses on the eye, because that's what I've heard. When you use face tracking have you noticed where it focuses? Does it ever focus on the cheek, or the chin, or the hair or does it almost always focuses on the eye? That's my question. And thank you for your time. :)

      D. Totief I have the 6D2 and use face tracking very often. It just works incredibly good with my 50L and 85mm 1.2 L II. Two challenging lenses when shot at f1.2. It nails the eyes in head and shoulder distances. The EOS R with Digic 8 will make it even more accurate. Hope that answers your question!

    The Eos R does 120 fps in 720 p, has a nice streamline single card slot, no superfluous in body stabilization, and lenses that are a bargain at $3,000. What's not to like?

    • @marioslrzn
      @marioslrzn 5 лет назад +2

      Mike Muellner, M.D. obviously if you’re complaining about price then this camera is not targeted at you, same thing applies to everything we buy today, Lamborghini are not targeting teachers right? Same thing. Photographers are more interested in good glass over video features, just as good doesn’t cut it.

  • @HexForger
    @HexForger 5 лет назад +4

    I'm not sure if a single SD card is really that big issue since you can "instantly" auto-transfer photos, as they're being shot, to your mobile? Moreover ,Cannon's app now supports auto-transfer of RAWs. It has some cons (transfer speed depends on number of factors, battery drained faster but apparently not dramatically) but to some extent having photos instantly backed up to my mobile, so a separate secured device, might be even a better option than a second card on the same device (camera).
    EDIT: Also, a really well prepared review. Good job mate.

    I consider changing from 5d mark iv to Eos R just because i want my sigma 35mm to work. Right now it only works in live view since it focuses on the sensor. When using the viewfinder the center point is most of the time pretty OK after calibration but all other points are not in focus which makes it useless.

    Thank you for the video Caleb. One request though: you talk about the eye autofocus and say that it works only in single shot mode. Could you test the face tracking (without eye af) and tell us where it focuses? Because I've seen reviews saying that face tracking is actually eye tracking. It doesn't focus randomly on the nose, the cheek, the lips etc. but on the eye. I don't know if it's choosing the closest eye but please make a test and give us the results. If it is actually focusing on the eye then a lot of negative comments about the not so good eye af will go down the drain and prove that the little square around the eye isn't anything more than a try to compete with what Sony offers and to satisfy the ever increasing demand of us consumers to get more and more gadgets, even if it makes no sense.

    I was looking for a B cam to add to my C100 mark 2 and to replace my 1 DS3 for photos, but to me this camera doesn’t add up and over priced at £2400 and the lack of features that Sony and Fuji have, Canon seem to have not listened to what photographers want and strip out and cut corners. The only reason I’ve been loyal to Canon is the quality of the glass and nothing comes close to the 70 - 200 F 2.8 L 2. I have looked at the Sony A 7 3 but the ergonomics are a nightmare and doesn’t have the robustness and could end up being broken easily and I don’t know whether Sony has the pro support like Canon does in the UK .

      Bridport Dorset, there are some great eos R video setup videos. A channel called AV pro shows setting on the R so that it cuts with c200. He mentions that a sharpness setting of +1 is a game-changer for canon R video. Check it out. Fujis are great, and sony has its well documented strong points. But the AVpro guy really did a bang up job on nailing the R setup for video. Check it out!

Both great but eos r viewfinder is amazing and shows you exactly what you are going to take. Also, new rf 16mm 2.8 is stunning but you have to be on the latest firmware for it to work properly. That said, updating to the latest firmware is not difficult.

  • @1611_KJB
    @1611_KJB 5 лет назад

    Caleb, two questions for you: 1) for all the gear you show and list, one of the coolest seems to be that little flip-out stand you are using to support the camera in this video. What is it and where did you get it?, 2) What is the exact setup (equipment and settings) you used to shoot this video. I have been trying to achieve the look you achieved in this video and always seem to fall short. As for your video, you apparently shot it way too soon after you got the camera and didn't do much research after you hit a glitch. Most of your "cons" either already were addressed when you made this or weren't really cons (not including "opinions", "feelings" and "impressions") in the objective measurable world. While you are welcome to all your subjective comments, they certainly aren't going to be shared by everyone. I have fairly small hands (I wear a medium cadet golf glove) and truly appreciate the feel and size of the camera and love the ergonomics of this camera. The placement of controls is impeccable and the addition of the control ring and touch bar easily make up for the loss of the joystick. People who complain about the missing joystick, in my opinion, are simply hanging on too tightly to old, familiar systems and have not opened up to more efficient controls that work better, are less costly to build, more reliable and provide additional versatility. Give the camera another shot and use it exclusively for 3 months, when you hit a snag, hit the community channels to discover how others have overcome it (and I don't mean live with it, I mean find a perfectly acceptable solution that is just "different" than you expected) Personally, I believe Canon has started a new paradigm in camera control management that is going to be emulated by everyone very soon.

    Caleb,
    Great review, though yours is among the many "lukewarm" reviews of the EOS-R. I have the EOS-R's grip, which, after the lens, is always the first accessory I buy for every new camera I bought over the years. Yes, the grip gives a better balance for the kit 24-105 lens on the body. You might want to buy one, and perhaps give a great review of it. And yes, I agree with you that the NEXT EOS-R will be something to look for. I just hope the resale price for my EOS-R "Mark 1" won't drop too low.
    Anyhow, I was most impressed by that tabletop tripod you placed the camera on. It looks so exquisite. Pray tell, what is it and where can I buy one. (Does anyone know what that item is?)

    Why we always cry about the joystick - move on - develop - enjoy - stop crying about an old style joystick - embrace the future … go with the flow instead against it … forget the the cumbersome, giant, heavy, ugly D5s - move on mate. Apart of that I really enjoyed your video.

    well anybody complains about switching to video mode being complex. In fact you only press the little red button to take video. It never was easier to even switch while taking images and continue to look into the EVF and just switch to video by pressing this button. It uses whatever video settings you configure to C3 video. (yes, you have 3 custom programs for video and 3 for stills.)

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  5 лет назад

      I know you can start recording with the record button and that it uses C3 settings. Switching modes is too slow and too many steps compared to what Canon used to have, a simple toggle switch.

    Very good made and with lots of information filled clip, so thank you. I was wondering: how about the fact that the camera doesn't have in body image stabilization and the use with a lens like the 24-70 USM 2.8 II (who has no IS)? I have read a review that in low light circumstances it's something you miss?
    Do you have any experience with that? I have a Canon 7D that I want to upgrade to the EOS R but at the moment that's what is keeping me from doing. I have a few L-glass but with nu IS.
    If you should say a possibility to give me any feedback on this, that would be nice ;)

    A nice camera I just can't bring myself to use one for weddings. For anyone who's had a card fail it's not nice so two slots are a must. I would love them to bring out a 5D MK5 that's mirrorless. With the same size body and lens mount so the only thing I need to buy is the camera. Will they do this, no. A nice camera and great review, just not for me.

    hey , just got this . love the silent mode . BUT can you please help me , or anyone !!! I'm photographing mostly in a very poor light ,strong light etc very unpredictable . was trying it at home and couldn't help noticing dark lines on images . ideally i need 250 shutter speed and that's when i see those lines ... when i reduce shutter to 50 - lines aren't there ..., BUT i rally need the hight shutter speed (250 min to 350) is there any solution to cheat that on that camera ?

      @Dancersdiary, I have a question: I've been using silent mode on the EOS M50, and love it. The only problem on the M50 is that the shutter is automatic in silent mode, meaning you can't manually set it. I've been trying to find out if the EOS R silent mode shutter is manual adjustable, but none of the reviews I've watched really covers this feature. Sorry I don't have a solution to your question, but I'm hoping you can clear this up for me since you are an EOS R owner :0)

    Excellent review. Well done. Your presentation answered many questions about upgrading. I think you are correct, that in a couple of years, Canon will correct many of the ergonomic challenges and button function/placement features. For now, I will stay with my 5DIII, 1DIV. Sony has really pushed the envelope so will be interesting to watch Nikon and Canon catch up. Thanks again!

    Hello Caleb, I'm tempted by the change to replace my Canon 6d (version 1) but what else pulls me back is the adapter, because I have my EF lens kit that I do not want to replace with the new ones, I would like your advice; I have a 24-70 f2.8 L (version 1) that I refuse to stop using. Thank you very much for your contribution. Sorry for my English (I'm still studying) Greetings from Entre Ríos, Argentina.

    I don't know why I keep watching reviews of this camera-I own one... maybe I'm looking for someone to say "this is how you can use this camera that makes it great!" Alas...
    I 100% agree with all your points. Biggest selling points are the EVF, RF system, nice grip, and new focus modes. Biggest pain points are a disjointed control scheme that makes it difficult to get into a "flow", namely the touch-'Mfn bar' and lack of joystick, lack of servo in face tracking, and 4k crop (the crop itself doesn't bother me, it's the frustration of not being able maintain your field of view). It's customizability is great, but doesn't go far enough to compensate for the unfocused controls.
