I do a little video but primarily still photography and this is why I would choose the EOS R over the EOS RP: - EOS R has a max shutter speed of 1/8000 sec, EOS RP has a max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec - EOS R uses the same LP-E6N batteries as my Canon 5D Mk4, EOS RP uses a completely different battery - EOS R can use a battery grip, EOS RP doesn't have any battery grip option - EOS R has USB 3.1 (5Gb/sec), EOS RP has USB 2.0 (480Mb/sec) - EOS R is 30MP, EOS RP is 26MP - not as drastic as some of the other differences but if I'm getting a new camera I'd rather the sensor be equal to or greater than my existing 5D Mk4 bodies. - EOS R allows custom filenames (which I actually use), EOS RP does not

Thumbs up for the real life comparison. Leaving video capability out of the picture, I actually prefer the RP over the R. I tried them both and yes, the display and EVF is better on the R. Im thinking buying it too. I have a 5dmkiii for 6 years and found that a pro level body is overkill if your not a wedding photog. Im just into portraits and travel. The RP is a good camera for that imo.
TheG7thcapo I only do portraits and travel as well, also a little at my kids sports events. It was perfect for our trip to Italy. I love my RP especially with the new update!!!!
The bit about the shutter curtains closing to protect the sensor appears to me to be a big deal. I am a neophyte when it comes to photography, but dust and dirt on the sensor CANNOT be a good thing. But is it worth $1000? If I buy a camera, it has to last for a long time. Unlike a pro who has to keep up with the latest trends in cameras, my camera has to last for at least 10-15 years. I think the R is more likely to do that than the RP, but, while I have owned Canon cameras for years, the EOS R seems to have problems that mean I should consider another brand. Thanks for the video.
My thoughts and situation exactly! What camera(s) are you looking at to solve those problems? I'm coming from Canon as well but I think Sony a7c is the better bang for buck at this price range. Even at higher price range Sony a7s iii is blowing R6 out of the water (video-wise). I'm just hesitant to make the switch.
@@WSJade I decided to just keep my old Canon for a few more years until all this gets sorted out. I too like the looks of the Sony, but like you, I am hesitant to make the switch.
@@CCoburn3 Which camera do you have now and which problems are you referring to specifically for EOS R? Unfortunately I can't afford to wait much longer for a fullframe (and mirrorless seems the way to go). I'm also mostly shooting video.
Well done... Great information with a relaxed delivery... Combined with rf glass. (5 more lenses promised by the end of the year) I think the rp can still be a lightweight powerhouse. I can't wait to see what Canon does for it pro mirrorless body... I have a feeling they will go all out and implement some new innovative tech and improve on the eye af tracking...
Great comparison I liked it, i never thought much about the Rp till now. I've been waiting for the R6 and once I see then it's a choice between the R6 or the EOS R
I have a brief stint with EOS RP... to be honest, I'm blown away and satisfied with the photos considering I only have RF 50 1.8 and RF 85 F2 that time. What if I have 1.4's or 1.2's back then? However, the reason I sold it is because its only 1/4000. hard to shoot wide open in some situations. I could've have countered it with ND filter but its extra stuff that needs to carry all the time. Else, if I have extra money, I will buy RP again for general photography.
Thanks Mitch - I've tried the R and RP - I really liked the size and weight of the RP especially with the 35mm RF. I was looking at that combination to go on a gimbal possibly the new Ronin SC. - question where all the video clips on the R.
Mark Shirley I did another video with some sample clips from the R. Its called ‘switching to the eos r’ on my channel. I wanted to keep this one photography focused.
This was nice to see. Decided to buy the RP to get into the RF lens system and with so many questions hovering around the R5/6 right now. Just got it yesterday with the 24-240 lens. Let's see what the next few months has in store...
@@skorpion_king it is a highly underrated camera! Was able to do a lot of travel and take some gorgeous photos. Although, I would say if you want to do wildlife, maybe an R7 is the way to go now. I bought an R6 just about a year ago and sold mine to KEH. The R7 gets you the crop sensor for extra reach and much, much faster frames per second.
@@skorpion_king if that's the case, compare the RP to the R10. The full frame sensor is very nice, but the R10 can get you better autofocus and frames per second. For about the same price, new.
@@michaeln2057 Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is the one to have for the RP. Samyang has the MF 14mm F2.8 out and Tamron and Sigma will be releasing RF mount lenses in 2020. With the new bodies coming out and third party lenses, it's gonna be an interesting year. :)
Ravencroft that’s good to hear!! I honestly wanna get this camera but my lord... the prices of these lenses are killing the vibe. I’m not a professional photographer so I don’t need all of them. But at least we should have some more affordable options

I really enjoy watching your content! I have the sigma 35mm f1.4 that is supposed to be arriving next week so Im eager to use it after watching this video (i know yours is the Tamron)
I think you should test the batteries till they die. My M50 battery indicator can go from full to completely dead in a few minutes. It's definitely not worth trusting, and 2 bars really means walking dead!
hellomyphone I disagree. I bought the 5DM3 new when it came out for 3600 body only for a euro trip and shoot weddings almost daily with full frames. It’s such a pain to bring those full frames and L lenses on trips. On small adventures. And even with the viltrox speed booster you can’t pretend the m50 is meant to substitute what a 5dm3 / 6d / 5dm4 is meant to do. I had a blast with the m50 and the native 11-22. It’s fun to adapt EF lenses to it for a third body for high end shoots But it really shines for on the go. Portability. Still great content creating images and videos. BUT to the point I carry 6 batteries at a time. One of my original canon batteries has gone bad (but I believe due to charging on 3rd party charger) but now with my new original and third party batteries they go a long way. I love the sigma 35 1.4 & canon 85 1.2L and they’re great even on the m50 But using the 22m 2.0 EFM and even 50m 1.8 almost create the same look and feel of the image (albeit maybe not to the exact quality) but that’s really only noticeable under an extreme microscope.
I saw this video one year ago but now i came back just for make the questions that don’t let me sleep for months: What brand are your white shoes that appear un this video? Where did you buy your blazer? Bro, that outfit in black is amazing.
Great information. Now that it is December 2019 most people will wait until the EOS R mark II comes out early in 2020. The model, Ana, is absolutely stunning, total beauty.
Thanks! Most professional EOS cameras have a release cycle of around 4 years so I wouldn't quite expect to see an upgrade to this camera for quite some time. They might possibly release a more 'pro' version of the EOS R to appeal to the 1 series line customer, however I don't expect it any time soon. Canon will be hard at work on their RF lens lineup over the next few years IMO.
@@MitchLally There is talk of a 75 megapixel R coming out with two card slots for pros. They may call it Rs I would hope Canon will remember to bring out tilt and shift lenses for their miracles cameras. But prices would be extortionate like it already is for their f2.8 and f2 lenses.
Hi, any reason why you don't use Servo AF in face or eye-tracking mode? I just found it to be more accurate, when the subject (or the photographer) is slightly moving. (Although I would like if I could just use single point with Single AF and switch the AF mode and tracking altogether) Cheers
Ofc you cant really differentiate both based on stills (unless you pixel peep it), camera body is about experience and features which might or might NOT impact your photography style at all.
I would go for the RP but I need more than 1/4000 shutter speed and I like the manual focus assist on the EOS R. I will be buying the EOS R for stills and continue to use my a7iii for video.
Use an ND filter. When im shooting outside i usea 2 stop nd not just to compensate for the shutter speed but also makes the colors more vibrant out of camera
Man I was just at Digidirect Brisbane checking out those cameras just a month ago...never thought you were actually from there. Other than that, I’ve been pretty torn between the Canon EOS R & RP and the Fujifilm XT3 on which to buy. All are awesome, I’m just still trying to figure out what I want out of a camera and how well it can do it based on the type of photography I do. Would’ve been nice to meet you while my ship was there for more questions regarding these cameras.
Stewart Robison hahah that’s great! Yeah I would say if you’re shooting photos only its a toss up on what you like better. But if you’re adding video to the mix then the xt3 is the way to go.
RP is Amazing!!! You won’t go wrong people, save the $1000 for glass , I have both and the photos are just about the same😉
Eos r or rp which is better
stories by robin the R is way better. However, if you are not a professional you are better of saving money and getting the RP
Correct R is better but image quality is really hard to notice if you use great lens 😉
That's a really good point - would make an interesting comparison: an R with a $1,000 lens vs an RP with a $2,000 lens.
How many raw+jpeg shots can be taken by this camera through the little battery?
I do a little video but primarily still photography and this is why I would choose the EOS R over the EOS RP:
- EOS R has a max shutter speed of 1/8000 sec, EOS RP has a max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec
- EOS R uses the same LP-E6N batteries as my Canon 5D Mk4, EOS RP uses a completely different battery
- EOS R can use a battery grip, EOS RP doesn't have any battery grip option
- EOS R has USB 3.1 (5Gb/sec), EOS RP has USB 2.0 (480Mb/sec)
- EOS R is 30MP, EOS RP is 26MP - not as drastic as some of the other differences but if I'm getting a new camera I'd rather the sensor be equal to or greater than my existing 5D Mk4 bodies.
- EOS R allows custom filenames (which I actually use), EOS RP does not
the difference for 1k ^^'
It's on sale now. More like $800 difference. I think it's worth it.

Makta972 I agree, 85mm has its place and its a good compliment to the 35mm but I personally love the perspective it gives.
The fact that the 35 is sharp at 1.4 is insane. Great technology.
A great video. I am a beginner. I owned a Canon 30D for motorsports. I like the lightweight Mirror less cameras.
I have come to conclusion that I’ll buy the RP...
John Carlo o'brien lets goo
John Carlo o'brien lesgoooo
Im thinking buying it too. I have a 5dmkiii for 6 years and found that a pro level body is overkill if your not a wedding photog. Im just into portraits and travel. The RP is a good camera for that imo.
TheG7thcapo I only do portraits and travel as well, also a little at my kids sports events. It was perfect for our trip to Italy. I love my RP especially with the new update!!!!
TheG7thcapo 5D IV is image is much better than 5DIII
Not Unless you will be switching lenses in a sandstorm, i dont see the big deal...
This really helped me figure out which one ill be getting, Thank you
Well done...
David Goddard Photography thanks for the comment David
@@MitchLally Your very welcome. Great work.
I bought the RP because of your videos and I'm living it. Keep it up!
Great comparison I liked it, i never thought much about the Rp till now. I've been waiting for the R6 and once I see then it's a choice between the R6 or the EOS R
The RP is a steal right now if you live in the US. $808 thru Canon refurbished.
Now you have to do a part 2 of this video because of the new firmware update.
dstefanek1988 I was just thinking that!
@@MitchLally and add video capabilities and you will get more subs!
@@smalltalk.productions9977 I don't care about subs haha
Mark Shirley what about video on rp? Dope or nope?
Love the video man, defo subbed
IAmJadoreTV Thanks mate appreciate the support!
Thank you Mitch, I bought RP was thinking to pay more and exchange to R, this video is so helpful👍
This was nice to see. Decided to buy the RP to get into the RF lens system and with so many questions hovering around the R5/6 right now. Just got it yesterday with the 24-240 lens. Let's see what the next few months has in store...
how was it bro i was looking to get myself the RP for amateur wildlife photography
@derbagger22 thanks! i was starting with old releases because it's a newfound hobby, so i was restraining from just going in with a professional kit😂
@@skorpion_king if that's the case, compare the RP to the R10. The full frame sensor is very nice, but the R10 can get you better autofocus and frames per second. For about the same price, new.
@derbagger22 thank you very much I'll look into it now
I recognise Mt Cootha botanic garden 😁great spot!
Nice work Mitch, I think I will grab an RP as a B-Cam to my R.
PromoMovies.com.au good idea
Cheaper RF lenses coming out that make more sense to pair with the RP.
Ravencroft do you know when cheaper RF lenses would be coming out?
@@michaeln2057 Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is the one to have for the RP. Samyang has the MF 14mm F2.8 out and Tamron and Sigma will be releasing RF mount lenses in 2020. With the new bodies coming out and third party lenses, it's gonna be an interesting year. :)
Ravencroft that’s good to hear!! I honestly wanna get this camera but my lord... the prices of these lenses are killing the vibe. I’m not a professional photographer so I don’t need all of them. But at least we should have some more affordable options
Brisbane represent! First video I've seen of yours Mitch and really enjoyed it! I've got an 80D and 5Diii- thinking of selling both to just get one camera that has the best of both worlds. Great comparison and rather surprised by how well the RP managed.
Wesley Chapman Thanks man! Its a good idea to try both before deciding :)
@@MitchLally Great point! Would love to see a video about how well the RP manages video and editing/ color grading compared to the R. Thanks for the insight and previous reply :)
I really enjoy watching your content! I have the sigma 35mm f1.4 that is supposed to be arriving next week so Im eager to use it after watching this video (i know yours is the Tamron)
Thanks José
I’m really digging your content!
I think you should test the batteries till they die. My M50 battery indicator can go from full to completely dead in a few minutes. It's definitely not worth trusting, and 2 bars really means walking dead!
Facts
The M50 is a complete disaster
hellomyphone I disagree.
It’s fun to adapt EF lenses to it for a third body for high end shoots
But it really shines for on the go. Portability. Still great content creating images and videos.
BUT to the point I carry 6 batteries at a time. One of my original canon batteries has gone bad (but I believe due to charging on 3rd party charger) but now with my new original and third party batteries they go a long way.
I love the sigma 35 1.4 & canon 85 1.2L and they’re great even on the m50
But using the 22m 2.0 EFM and even 50m 1.8 almost create the same look and feel of the image (albeit maybe not to the exact quality) but that’s really only noticeable under an extreme microscope.
New sub here. Great video review! I have the RP myself and love it. But looking to go for the R for the uncropped 4K.
The 4K is still cropped in the R btw🙃
Hey Man, looking at the Canon EOS R and found you! I'm from Australia too so I subscribed!
Thanks for checking out the video!
Thank you so much 🙏🌸 l m still between of the eos r and xt4
omg this lady is gorgeous. Also, thank you for this video. It's really helpful.
I love your content, subscribed
LEGEND!
I saw this video one year ago but now i came back just for make the questions that don’t let me sleep for months:
What brand are your white shoes that appear un this video?
Where did you buy your blazer? Bro, that outfit in black is amazing.
Haha thanks dude appreciate you taking notice. The sneakers are Reebok Club c85 and the blazer is just from Zara.
Worth it i think as its new new
Rhythmic Sleep. Great choice.
Thanks homie!
Very nice and opportune vid. Thanks!
no blabla but acutally a good comparison :) Thanks mate
Such a strong noise at ISO 200? How can it be?
any diffrences in Eye AF between R and RP?
Jarosław Niekrasz not to my eye :)
i can't really tell the difference!
They may call it Rs
I would hope Canon will remember to bring out tilt and shift lenses for their miracles cameras. But prices would be extortionate like it already is for their f2.8 and f2 lenses.
I’m thinking more like a 1DX equivalent if anything.
Hi, any reason why you don't use Servo AF in face or eye-tracking mode? I just found it to be more accurate, when the subject (or the photographer) is slightly moving. (Although I would like if I could just use single point with Single AF and switch the AF mode and tracking altogether) Cheers
padam19 no reason. Guess I’ve always used one shot and its worked for me in the past. Might give servo a try.
That because sigma art has back focusing problem with eye tracking
@@lightrail2823 don't think back focusing issue will ever exist in mirrorless systems.
Ofc you cant really differentiate both based on stills (unless you pixel peep it), camera body is about experience and features which might or might NOT impact your photography style at all.
Thank you for the comparison...👍🏿
Hey from Brisbane as well !
I hv RP and I like it..
Good review mate
For someone doing real estate photography are you better off saving the $1000 and investing in a better lens?
I would go for the RP but I need more than 1/4000 shutter speed and I like the manual focus assist on the EOS R. I will be buying the EOS R for stills and continue to use my a7iii for video.
@@SpruceUp612 Whatever works is the perfect camera.
Use an ND filter. When im shooting outside i usea 2 stop nd not just to compensate for the shutter speed but also makes the colors more vibrant out of camera
@@TheG7thcapo I got the R with the control ring and I love it. I shoot high speed sync and I use variable ND for video
THANK YOU VERY MUCH IT WAS A VERY INTERESTING VIDEO.
But if you’re adding video to the mix then the xt3 is the way to go.
the biggest difference is video. RP does not have DPAF in 4k, no c-log
Hi....at 8:07... Is that color noise? That image quality doesnt look good....i think i will go with eos r
