Here's a summary of the testing: Individual Test Winner Focusing Sony IBIS Sony Card Slots Sony Frame Rate Sony Video Sony Auto Focus Sony Dynamic Range Sony Joystick Sony Lenses Sony Flippy Screen Canon Best Trip to Maui Canon* Overall Conclusion = Tie Hmm, I'm not sure what to make of the test nor the conclusion...
So, the A7 III has two card slots, clearly superior dynamic range, autofocus and burst rate, better video quality, a larger selection of quality native mount lenses and isn't hampered by that total waste of a slider bar control. Yet, you lead off the video saying you can't decide between the two. With respect to a casual shooter, they should use their smartphone for selfie videos or vlogging. Get the Sony for everything else. It's the clearly better camera for both stills and video.
I think he says there's no winner because both cameras have features that make them non-starters for certain kinds of shooting. The lack of a second card slot makes the Canon a potentially ruinous choice for wedding photographers. The lack of a flip out screen makes vlogging with the Sony basically impossible. Also, if you currently use Canon cameras, having the Canon lenses with a Canon adapter is a HUGE benefit for the EOS R.
I think people starting out in Full Frame will probably go straight to the Sony, or maybe wait for the Panasonic, the only people trying to decide between the Sony and the Canon are existing Canon shooters who've invested in a lot of premium glass. The MC-11 works ok at shorter focal lengths but it still misses shots, I wouldn't use it for anything important. Since Canon don't have to reverse engineer their own mount, their adapter is presumably closer to native experience. I've heard that the Sony 70-200 f2.8 G Master for example isn't as good as the Canon equivalent, and costs more, so the Canon shooter has the choice of spending thousands on replacing their lenses, some maybe not quite as good as what they already owned, to gain better dynamic range (which may be a big deal for some, less so for others), better auto focus and better eye autofocus. I don't think it's a clear-cut decision by any means. I've currently got a foot in both camps, love my A7R III, but not planning on replacing all my glass any time soon, if Canon up their game in the next generation I may well be tempted back!
Bill Ferris for stills the Canon is better. It can give sharp shots at 6.5 stops with a 2 seconds exposure hand held! A fully articulating screen with 2 second handheld exposure is a wonderful combination.
Bill Ferris 100% agree. The only reasons I see people getting the canon over the Sony is flip screen, owning canon lenses, or brand loyalty. The Sony is CHEAPER by hundreds of dollars, and better in so many other aspects.
I have the a7Rii and not one single time did I miss a flip screen. But that's probably because I would never film myself. Also, I always use the finder. Never the screen. Maybe just a habit from the very early days.
Sony doesn’t have a flip screen because Canon has a exclusive patent that prevents any other brand from having the same screen. That’s why every other brand tilits
@@awaraa S1H can flip the screen outwards like Canon also and flip upwards, which differs from the S1 which flips the screen inwards and upwards. Makes sense because the latter is a better for photography e.g. portrait low angle shots. They worked around the patent (if there is one) by using two hinges instead of one hinge and a single articulating mechanism. I actually like the S1H one better because you can still angle the screen inline with the lens.
Went for the Sony the first chance I got, switching from Canon after 10 years. Not saying there isn't a learning curve, or that everything is better, but it still feels like stepping 5-10 years into the future. Just finished a wedding with 2x A7III and an A7RIII, the AF is in another league, and the eye af and excellent tracking make the portrait session and things like low light wedding reception dancing photos a breeze. Thanks for non biased review. Apart from the flippy tilty screen, for professional work the canon looks quite inferior. Now really the only two things I'd wish in the A7III would be a bit more ruggedness / weather sealing, and that excellent silent shutter of the A9. But still, it is a perfect workhorse, not missing a beat in any of the weddings I've shot this year.
I'm not sure but it looks like the Sony won all the individual tests (focusing, frame rate, video, controls, AF, Speed, Dynamic Range, lenses, etc) but it didn't win the title?
Wouldn't people be better off with an EOS M5 vs the EOS R since the R crops so much? They could save a bunch of money and buy lenses with the money saved.
NOTE: We did all our testing on the Sony a7 III. I used the Sony a7R III just to demonstrate the physical controls, because we had to return the a7 III, and the Sony a7R III is physically identical. Win a Canon EOS R at freesdp.com Buy the Sony a7 III (sdp.io/a73) or the Canon EOS R (sdp.io/r)
@SwitchRich 30mp should look a but sharper than 24 , disadvantage is less shadow performance, most photagraphers will never Crop to a point where you need to crop to make the Canon look better.in other words a 1:1 image on a 4k tv will look the same,
Why don't people get an external monitor, if filming yourself is important? Won't that benefit people wanting to film 4K with a Sony and without a crop.
Did I miss were Tony mentions the 1.8x crop at 4K with the Canon R? He keeps saying that it is a great vlogging camera, but doesn’t mention that the 24-105 lens will be more like 50-180 cause of the crop factor. Those vloggers are going to need really long arms!!!
To me where the Canon EOS R fails is the massive crop factor when shooting video, so if you are going back and forth between shooting video & photos you have to completely reframe to get the same shot in the two different modes. I still find it hard to believe Canon did that.
+ Krishna Poddar I know - I meant to say that. And I reiterate: I think it is a massive fail to have such a large difference in the Field of View between the two shooting modes.
The Sony a7iii also gives you the option to punch into aps-c mode, allowing you to move in tighter. Granted, you do lose some resolution, but it allows you to get the shot. (I’m a life long Canon pro who waited and waited for the Canon mirrorless, and then switched to Sony AFTER the EOS R was announced.)
kristianmag true, however when you crop into apsc, the eye autofocus finds your intended target easier, especially if it’s at an event or party with multiple options.
BROis yeah lol, too bad they don’t give you the option to go full frame in 4k. Canon’s constant crippling of their camera basically helped me make the switch an easy decision, and there are lots more like me. They don’t want to cannibalize their cinema line, but now they’ve lost a Canon lifer instead.
They aren't crippling on purpose, they just don't have the processor/technology for it at the moment. At least according to an interview with their execs. They also considered using IBIS, but couldn't deal with the heat. Trust me, these companies aren't looking to get beat by someone else just to save another line... I just don't think they have the resources at this stage to deal with the things it took Sony YEARS to innovate/develop and test in the marketplace. I was watching an interview with someone from Sony and they mentioned that the insanely quiet/fast/accurate motors in the Sony 400 f/2.8 were actually the same technology they've employed for IBIS. They've since put that same AF motor into the Sony FE 24 f/1.4 GM and I'm sure future lenses will enjoy all of those innovations.
Yeah, maybe last year. But This year, Canon is releasing the R5 and R6, while it seems the A7 IV and the A7S III are being delayed indefinitely. Anyway, even if they were coming out, the R5 is the most anticipated camera of the year. Boy, I'm glad I waited for the Canon mirrorless system to mature a little, before wasting money on a Sony system. Sure, the eye autofocus seems great, but the video recording on the Sony A7 IV is rumored lousy 4K 30, the Canon R5 is able to do 8K 30p and 4K 60p no crop, with internal video recording. Plus, it's made in Japan instead of Made in China, like the Sony. lmao, the lenses are way higher quality in the Canon system too. Man, people saying Sony is "better", for a lot of people the R6 is going to be better than the A7 IV would have been. Man, it's a monopoly for Canon this year, and the big announcement event is later this month online.
@@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr Now you only need to sell your soul to afford it... While most casual and pro shooter can pick up an A7 III at half the price (or less) than what the R5 will surely cost.
Same boat here, John. I can't fully express how bad this is from Canon at that price point. What a strange camera. Huge sensor, zero features, flip out screen. So confusing.
In addition, while many of the nay sayers here put down the flip-out screen, it is a definite advantage, especially when trying to minimize reflections and maximize the scene if you are using live view.. Just one of the many reasons I enjoy my 80D..
Yes Alex, people that are paid by Canon are also allowed to post links to other companies products as well as even mention anyone else's brand. What a genius way to market your own product.
p f are you blind? Or am I missing something? The Sony camera I saw in the video was the a7riii, not the a7iii. The a7iii has a 1.2 crop in 4k 30p. Tony said it has no crop because he's using an entirely different camera for the comparison test LOL

Couldn't agree more. Seems like vlogging is also the most important camera feature set for Tony "now a days" which seems silly. Seems like the Canon is the new toy and that's what he wants to play with... It's hard to understand why the Canon wins or he does a poor job articulating exactly why.
@@mallred4347 hands down you have Sony camera and you trying to justify a purchase :) you did right choice and now you can just chill it's no point to leave 20 comments under the video lol.
You have way too much time on your hands to be counting my posts. Kinda creepy and weird Tomas. BTW your analysis is wrong - I posted a bunch because 1. I was a disappointed with Tonys flopping and recent love affair with vlogging with a 3 pound camera that is obviously a dumb choice for the job and 2. I was bored/cranky last night... BTW, I've pre-ordered the EOS-R and I own 5 Canon L lenses along with my A7R3 and A9. I'm looking forward to using the EOS R with my lenses (which do work great with my Metabones V adapter on my Sonys). You're a creep.
It’s odd that you say there is no clear winner and then rattle off advantage after advantage for the A7iii: much better video, IBIS, 2 card slots, more native lenses, auto focus, free usb charging, joystick, better button placement, etc...
Skintone test in mixed lighting situation, with AWB? Portrait-profile comparison? These are some extremely valid reasons why Canon users are still sticking to their gear.
I was split between the Eos RP and Eos R and decided for the Eos RP and some things are actually working better and easier than on the Eos R and this test just proved it to me. Glad I went for the RP. Always asked myself if the R would have been a better choice.
OMG...... THE CANON USB CHARGER RETAILS FOR $190..............Why? Its a $20 charger at most. It just goes to show how naive some people are.....!!!!! Cant wait for someone to justify this kind of BS..... I'm not going to buy this camera as I'm a fuji/nikon user but had to comment. $190 for a Canon USB adapter.......!!!!! A Phase One Battery charger/cradle costs $140 and thats a $20,000 camera....... GO Figure.....!!!
You confirmed again what I have always experienced. Canon has terrible shadow noise. Again and again my 6D lets me down when shooting at night. 3 stops of shadow push is nothing, and thus I have to mess with various tricks in post. WHY can't we have a quiet sensor, Canon? And if it will be noisy (as all sensors must be at some point) why can't the noise be more random, stochastic? Then I might just leave it, as it would have a film like quality. But the color bands and blobs are WAY harder to clean than luminance noise. Just SO DISAPPOINTED. I guess Canon designers never shoot at night! That makes Sony the clear winner. Because what you said is basically this: the cameras are pretty equal, but avoid shooting in such and such situations with Canon. Case closed. Not being a vlogger, Sony is where I am heading!
I am glad you shoot properly lit images and no need to be concerned with this issue. In severe backlight, while trying to hold detail/color in the sky, pulling shadows is a serious problem and has nothing to do with pixel peeping.
I'm just goofing about. No offense. That must be awful having to shoot in such awful conditions all the time. I would hate that. Can you find a workaround to make life a little easier for you?
And yet Canon won in many things that mattered to many people. It is all about what one feels important as features. Canon has more glass to use natively, better for vlogging, has far more AF points and from everything I have seen, far better AF performance for non action. Once Sony brings out lots of big glass and it doesn't cost $12k then maybe people will think Sony is the clear cut winner in everything.
@@rsilvers129 not true. It works 100% with the camera, is OEM equipment with the adapter made specifically for those lenses. They are for all practical purposes, native lenses.
Buy a a73 for pro work and pick up a Sony a5100 for vlogging for 300 bucks. Price comes out the same as one canon. Keeping my fingers crossed for a professional canon mirrorrless in the mean time
Or buy this one just for 13 bucks and use your 6.5 inch phone screen to see your self. It will give 2,5 times bigger view your self. www.amazon.com/Chargercity-Camera-Tripod-Samsung-Smartphone/dp/B00C3QF4GY
This is a poor comparison @Tony you didn’t mention that canon cannot adapt Sony lenses yet you mark sony down for not being perfect with adapting canon glass when it is their competitors. You went route of Peter McKinnon and hyped up this sub par camera to make it a match for Sony. It shoots crop 4K when Sony is oversampled 4K. Only thing I can give it as a win is the blogger style autofocus. Everything else Sony slaughtered canon and Nikon. For photographers there’s only one winner. Sony. For videographer it is still Sony. Just by an atomos 4K screen for 300$ and you can see yourself and it would still cost less than Canon 😱
The “Casual Shooter” would only benefit from ALL the things the A7III includes, for less money. How the hell is the Canon better exactly? I understand Tony’s been getting lots of flack lately for calling out Canon and Nikon, but I would find him so much more credible if he stuck to his guns. This video was pretty difficult to stomach.
And for selfies? How about the decent HD video camera we all have in our pockets now? I have taken maybe five selfies with my SLR. I personally hate them! Half my selfies are making fun of people who take selfies!
I am surprised that you selected the Canon. I don’t understand why. The only thing (according to your own video ) that it does is : 1. Filming yourself alone 2. Video autofocus at low resolution (we know canon is the best at that). The autofocus if frustratingly slow, there are almost no lenses. It’s a single camera system st the moment. Sony no longer has only expensive lenses , you can get native lenses from. Sigma. The Sony is a proven system , the Canon is new. I frankly fail to see why recommend a normal newbie that camera. The screen is totally irrelevant, most people buying a camera will not use it to film themselves blog style.
surely a young vlogger would get more mileage from a cheaper dslr or m3/4 if you only want to film yourself do you really need an interchangable lens system?
Holy moly, Northrups. I'm a fan of your channel (I even paid for SDP) but this is just an embarrassment. Unless a flippy screen is your NUMBER ONE priority (the only thing the Sony flat-out can't do) there really should be no circumstance where the Canon should be recommended over A73. Apparently you're recommending this (edit: Canon) for people "If you're a new casual shooter without any particular camera" even though what "new, casual shooter" is buying a $2,300 camera??? but you also concede that EYE AF: "[CANON] Canon EYE AF is unusable", Silent shooting: "[CANON] Essentiaully useless", Action AF: "[CANON] It's one of the worst sports cameras I've ever used". Why??? Because Canon EOS-R menus and viewfinder are slightly better. :o WTF?? I can't even wrap my head around this recommendation. I'm not a pro. Just an enthusiast and I use these features ALL THE TIME. I volunteered and took class pictures for my kid's school. Guess what? I used Eye-AF and friggin' killed it. I shot pix for my cousin's wedding. Silent shot her whole walk down the aisle (/w AF at more than 2 fps). Mind boggling how you discount these actual features that get you better pictures over subjective things like "slightly better body-feel, menus and viewfinder". Maybe the menus or VF aren't as good but the Sony doesn't have "useless", "unusable" features. So, according to you, a slightly better form factor/menus/EVF are more important to new shooters over (probably) best in-class Eye-AF, Motion AF, Silent shooting AF/etc/etc. This video is just crazy-town to me... :(
Your basing all this based on my review, and it sounds like you haven't used the camera, so I don't know why you think I'm crazy. The Canon is sharper, easier to use, and takes the all-important selfie. New photographers will love it. I specifically recommended the Sony for wedding photographers.
If I came off a little harsh, I apologize. I'd been drinking...lol, so I'll take it down like 3 notches. You're absolutely right. I haven't used it but I think my points are still valid when comparing the 2 directly but if your conclusion is: new photographers (that have $2300 to drop) will like it then I can't refute that. IMO, I think that even new shooters will want to eventually try Eye-AF, Motion AF, Silent shooting AF but if you buy the Canon you're SOL because they're "useless" and "unusable" but that's just me. I still love ya, Tony.
Yes Sony crops at 4K30 and I think it also crops at 4K25, which is sad. Only no crop at 4K24. Even if 1.2x crop is a little of a crop, it's still crop and not a very good thing.
@@charbax I don't think any mirror less camera does zero-crop 4k. Only pro cinema cameras ATM. I'd imagine next generation of Sonys and Canons and Nikons will do full width though.
Mount size is not only for the purpose of smaller lenses. It allows larger aperture too in the case of the 28-70 f/2. It's all preference which camera to use, It can be rationally argued that Canon is at least a valid option, worthy of purchase, and even superior/inferior in specific aspects. Canon have things Sony don't and vice versa.
Indeed. Big ass sensors and barrelsize lenses produce stunning pictures. Sony is just a step lower on the ladder, with a shirtpocket camera on the first sport. ;)
If I was starting now and had the money for either of these two new bodies I would get an a7III or save a bit more and get the A7RIII (they are only 350 euros apart). Tony could you do a comparison of how the 24-105 Canon lens measures up against the SONY 24-105?
I am a Canon shooter and I think the R is a bad first attempt at FF mirrorless. Bring back the joystick, put 2 card slots in it and sensor stabilisation. Then fix the eye AF and take off the AA filter. Only then will I buy it. In the mean time the Nikon Z looks much better. If Nikon only knew the potential of a proper ef to z adapter, they would make it their first priority.
10 bit 4:2:2 (external), 1080p 120fps, IBIS, Non-cropped 4K, nice EVF and touchscreen, excellent weather sealing......I think the Nikon Z6 is worth a look when it comes out soon and we see brutal reviews...otherwise I'll switch to Sony from Canon. Unless we get something definitive from Panasonic full frame very soon.
@@brois841 So it doesn't have afeature that is only useful to the small percentage of RUclipsrs out there. And it isn't natively compatible with it's competitors products??? Lol
@@brois841 vloggers make an extremely small portion of photographers and videographers. And why would it need to adapt canon lenses natively? It's not like the Canon can adapt sony lenses. At least it can adapt a-mount, Canon, and sigma lenses at all. There's already great native sony lenses so that should not be a talking point at all.
Guys, I know you think only RUclipsrs want this feature, but they aren't the only ones. I've had my camera near a wall or a place where it was a pain to walk around and get my head back there. You can flip the screen and show the subjects so they can see what they look like and how things are framed. I have many examples when I found it useful, but the point is it's about choice. Fuji's system allows for the same up/down tilting that Sony has, but also flip-out for anyone who might want it. So simple and ingenious. Another thing I like about the flippy screen on the Panasonic GH line of cameras is that you can flip it around to protect it and throw it in a bag. Always nice to have a choice and I honestly like Canon's screen.
I am pretty sure that the only Fuji camera that has that currently is the new budget Fuji x-t100 and that is the best system with the best of both worlds, all other Fujis with a moving screen are like the Sony. But if I had to choose between the sony style or canon style screen it would be the Sony one because it is more discreet in public/street photography and the screen is closer to the controls, also you can use an external monitor if you really need to see yourself. Also because the screen on the Canon flips out to the left, it means you have to cross your hands over if you are right handed and hold the camera with your left hand and want to use the touch screen with your right hand while it is flipped out and tilted up or down.
@@TonyAndChelsea I get your point and understand that as a Canon photographer there are reasons for staying with Canon but in the end it still feels like an 80% to 20% for Sony from my point of view but we don't need to have the same opinion on this... Besides that i always love your reviews and I'm happy to see more competition in the market to drive the innovation 📸
How does the canon have sharper images when it has a full blown AA filter on it while the A7iii has a very subtle AA filter? Sharper images is a BS statement. You have mistaken the extra resolution of the 30mp sensor which only matter when you pixel peep or crop really, really tight.
5:25 The image comparison is flawed tho, it's still the same from the previous video where the A7III image is out of focus. There isn't almost any perceivable difference in detail between a 30 and 24 mpx sensor.
I own both, but I feel that EOS R is made more robustly in the sense of holding it, and EVF is also higher than EOS R by several stages. Moreover, the heat radiation effect and the drip-proof effect are high. And the color of the canon is familiar.
Very good and unbiased comparison, Tony! I personally haven’t used the Canon EOS R yet, so it’s nice to hear from someone who has actually used both cameras and isn’t just comparing two cameras based on a spec sheet!
Great review. Despite what others say on here, I agree there's nothing in it for me between these 2 cameras - both are excellent, and I'd be equally happy with either. Personal circumstances are very dependent deciding what camera is more suitable - and I'm still not sure myself which one I'm going to go for: Sony - has no interval timer / timelapse, which is something I do often use Sony - no flip screen is a weakness and I'm not talking vlogging. I always use the flip screen with my kids for fun selfies, and for fun family photo's when on outdoor trips Sony - ergonomics are not great. Dated even. Usability is high on my important list and this is nearly a deal-breaker for me. I'm not a pro. I need something that feels comfortable for my beginner/intermediate needs Sony - doesn't seem 'friendly'. I can't put my finger on why - maybe the menu's, the looks, maybe the feeling of using old technology with the lower resolution EVF/LCD Sony - the 2 SD slots have no advantage for me at all. Not interested Sony - tried and tested, and clearly a quality all-round camera. Video looks excellent. Canon - x1.8 crop on 4k video. So what? I don't see this as an issue. Firstly, I'd just adjust my position to cater for the crop, as you would anyway. Secondly, 4k is just so unwieldy due to the size, thus the majority of my shooting would be in 1080p. Sure I'd do a few 4k, but in those few cases I'd not be bothered by the x1.8 crop Canon - rolling shutter is worse than Sony. Although looking at the video comparisons, it's not that bad. If I did a lot of video this would be a deal breaker, however I do say 80% photos, 20% video Canon - poorer dynamic range, I'm guessing due to the inferior sensor. I'm undecided how bothered I am about this. Canon - image stabilisation actually looks pretty good on the video comparisons. Canon - only a few lenses, however the lenses launched are all I need initially. I'd be keen to get the 70-200mm telephoto. Having access to all the EF/EF-S lenses in the meantime is comforting Canon - poorer low ISO, but I guess I can correct issues in Lightroom, and I don't really get to the very low ISO's Canon - "no joystick", although not having ever used one I'm not sure it's something I will miss. I do get how it would be useful Canon - I prefer the look & feel of it by a long way Canon - $190 for a USB charger?? What? If a USB-C charger doesn't natively work, then the camera cannot really claim to be USB chargeable, or even "USB compatible"! Canon - EOS RP version very attractive option There is no outright winner in these camera's. Both excellent. Its perhaps about deciding which deficiencies to accept and live with. I'm wondering whether the RP version is a better consideration being cheaper, lighter and seemingly having a very similar spec.
So Tony, let me know if I'm way off with this summary: The Sony wins for native lens selection, autofocus, video recording options, dynamic range, FPS, silent shooting. The Canon wins for overall lens selection (with the adapter), resolution, the image stabilization, and ergonomics (unless you're back-button focusing). Additionally: If I were doing professional work, the single card slot would make the Canon a non-starter. If I were vlogging, the lack of a flip-screen would make the Sony a non-starter. If I were just starting, the sony would definitely win the comparison, but if I had Canon lenses, I'd almost be FORCED to stick with Canon. I AM just starting. I DID pick the Sony. I have to say I'm pretty unhappy with my decision in that this is FAR too expensive a camera for me right now. However, I *_AM_* happy with it compared to the other new mirrorless cameras. Canon and Nikon both seem like they're going to be playing catchup for a few generations.
Thank you for this comparison. I bought the a7iii on a very good deal a few months ago. The main reason I went Sony as a portrait photographer was AF and specifically eye AF. I never got the results I wanted with my 6d shooting at wide apertures and tired of messing with AFMA I went mirrorless. I love dual pixel for video and canons video interface and flip out screen til the point that I still use my 80D for my wife's RUclips channel even though the Sony has way better specs. When the Canon announced eye AF on the eos r it made me think maybe I should have waited for Canon, but if their technology isn't reliable yet I would have always been wishing I had a Sony... Plus you get 3 control wheels and a joystick. If the had come out at the same time and at the same price I would have gravitated towards the Canon, but right now, I can't be mad I made the switch.
I switched to Sony from my 5D and its been great... I was waiting for Canon mirrorless so long and only now they release one am glad I did not wait. I really don't understand why canon could not do in camera image stabilization? This would been great with legacy lenses...huge deal breaker for me. Having said that am sure Canon will sell bunch of these and it might be good fit for many due its out of box color science.
Why is everyone hating on Tony for not spraying the champagne all over the Sony at the end? Come on guys, you know what's what.... half of the points go to each camera BUT, the Sony wins in all those that really matter - not hard to figure out. So if you're deciding on one of these two cameras you wouldn't really need to hear the conclusion at the end of this video. You should just thank him for providing such a concise and informative comparison. What have you done for the photography community today....?
As a trucker/vlogger shooting on the go with little time I've been frustrated with every camera I've tried: Panasonic G7, Sony 6300, 6500, Canon 80D, Sony a7Sii, Canon G7Xii. Of all those cameras the only one I really count on is the G7Xii. I'm going to try the R, it seems like it's made for vlogging in 1080/60. The Sony is cheaper (literally), but the stabilization is weak at best and I'm not ready to trust it's focusing for video. Thanks Tony!
It is a 3rd generation for Sony and 1st for Canon. Canon is not ready for prime time yet, clearly. But this is also why you don't buy the first year model of a car after major change. Nobody liked Sony A7. Canon 2nd generation (RR) is the one to wait for.
....but Canon has had FOUR YEARS to study what Sony has done with mirrorless, and TWO YEARS to come up with something better than this essentially tweaked version of the EOS 5d IV sensor (1.74 crop factor - WTH???) which took FOUR YEARS to be released after the 5d III!! No, what Canon did here is inexcusable
hang on a second I was promised something amazing by canon fanboys, granted the eosr is better then I expected but still not blowing my mind, now you're telling me i have to wait for the 2nd gen?
Kris W "Canon 2nd generation is the one to wait for." But then, won't the competition have also advanced accordingly? I'm not a sony user, but I'm sure that company is not going to just lay back with what they already have.
Nothing 1st generation is perfect. Granted, they (like Nikon) had a few years watching Sony and both 1st FF Nikon and Canon mirrorless are way better than 1st Sony but they can't bridge the gap completely. And the competition is always like that: the newest product from one brand is better than other things on the market until someone else introduces their new product. Both Nikon and Canon have features that competition doesn't, including Sony. Now think back a few years - what was your wish list for camera features? I bet all cameras have more today. We always want more, nothing wrong with it. It's a matter of setting your own list of important features and picking which camera is closest to it. Because many of us have a bunch of lenses, we will most likely stick to one brand. Just maybe not jumping on the first generation of mirrorless but waiting a bit more. I bet like Z6 and Z7, Canon will have their higher end mirrorless soon that will address some shortcomings of EOS R.
I guess that's the worst part. The competition has been out and it's not like the specs are hidden. They have the bar they have to beat and it seems like they didn't really make an overall better camera. Yeah, it's good in some and bad in some but, if you knew beforehand another person was gonna be wearing the same thing as you, why would you show up still wearing those clothes?
Fair comparison, but... I would say that Sony a7iii is at least two generations ahead of the EOS R. So most likely the Riii will be a good camera but then Sony will introduce a7v or similar. After many years of using the full frame cameras from Canon I switched to Sony this summer and enjoy it. I will always respect Canon but hopefully they will learn something from Sony and treat their loyal customers better.
Totally a legit comparison. I'm glad to hear your conclusions were exactly as mine after looking into this for a while. I've preordered the R and am waiting. It fits my type of shooting. Thanks Tony!
LOVE your information packed coverage of everything digital. You totally respect we all lead very busy lives (We won't mention the Christmas room guy who takes 23 minutes to discuss 2 pet peeves of the A7 III) It is obvious you have done a ton of homework down to very tiny detail before giving us the low down. Thanks for all your hard work Tony! Will always use you as a point of reference for fast unbiased assessments. Respect!
I’ve actually never had a problem shooting Canon lenses on my Sony. It’s actually all I use for portraits. I would say for Video it’s not worth using Canon lenses. But for photos with the MC11 I have sharp photos with my adapted Canon glass as I did when borrowing native Sony glass and the autofocus is great, even eye AF works.
Thanks for the transparency at the start about the trips. Why do so few understand the importance of this? I don't for a moment think it influences your reviews or I wouldn't be watching! I hope this won't lower my chance of winning a camera!
Can you test the EOS R with the Sigma Art lens to check the performance? Also how do you feel about the blue tooth/wifi to an external device to replace a second card slot?
What Sony camera are you actually reviewing, Tony? The tittle says A7III but the Sony camera you are showing clearly has an R on it? Are you comparing the Sony A7RIII?
I remember when the gh5 came out and the autofocus thing went crazy everywhere. This is a similar freakout. Canon had always said that this is primarily for those with canon glass who want an easy transition to mirrorless. This is all about the new lenses not the body. The camera is going to be perfectly fine and you'll be able to do great work with it. If you have canon glass it's a no brainer.
Hi Tony... I'm torn between getting the Canon EOS R or the A7iii. The Canon is (was) slightly winning me over, due to the flip screen, and the ease of the menu...but looking at many IG photos of pics taken with a A7iii vs the EOS R, it looks like the Sony a7iii pics just have that extra sharpness and detail, while Canon photos look a tad softer. Just wanted to know if you observed this also or its just my imagination. At the end of the day, its the photo images that matters, not menu usability or a flip screen, right?
@@wikedwhich1 Ease of use, especially in the menu beats the sony. Ergonomics with the Canon in terms of how it fits in my hand were better too. As for the images, super sharp but of course that's all in the lens. I got the 50mm RF 1.8, and a canon 24-70 2.8 and they are very sharp. Battery is very poor though, battery dies quick. The LCD screen is super sharp and high resolution compared to the Sony. I'm no pro-photographer, so those are just my minor opinions but I'm happy with the purchase.
Doesn’t the Canon R automatically tethered to your smart phone and photos can be sent to cloud automatically. That’s about the best backup cause if your equipment gets stolen then you have a copy in the cloud that you can access anywhere. Or if you’re shooting a wedding, you can tethered photos to different devices for people to preview sound like a nice feature
I got a different message from this video than what you probably intended. What I learned is that cameras have gotten so good these days that really we compare their capabilities in more extreme specific scenarios than in the most practical scenarios. Obviously some will say that these are their typical scenarios but for the vast majority of others these limitations between the two cameras is a wash. It gives me great hope that I can continue using a 3 year old camera body for several more years since nothing that major has happened in the technology that necessitates the upgrade. Now if they make a camera that has an ultra sharp zoom lense that goes from 24-150mm f1.8 constant and is smaller than a coke can we will be in a new era of photography. Obviously this can’t be achieved by physics with current camera technology, but I believe one day there will be a way to do this and it will be a good day.
Except for the ergonomics, viewfinder, and control buttons, the Sony A7 lll is clearly superior, especially in low light. The comparison graph in DP Review shows the A7 lll is superior in most categories.
Hello . Excellent review . I am planning to upgrade to full frame . Don’t own full frame lenses . My main areas are landscape and portraits . I shoot only stills and no video . What do you recomend . A7iii + tamron 28-75 + get wide lens for astro Or Eosr with 24-105 Is ergonomics of canon worth the relatively inferior sensor and lack of ibis. ( actually where i live there are neither of both available at display on stores) Thanks in advance.
Anon Fox well kinda, the Nikon has much more glass if you use the adapter but in terms of the Z lenses than some has a lot more for their Mirrorless range at the moment
Hi Tony and Chelsea- So I'm not sold on the EOS R. Is there a Canon camera that offers more similar strengths to the Sony a7iii, but with those Canon colours I love? Thanks in advance.
Good review video. For Canon to even be in the running against Sony on their first full frame mirrorless camera says a lot. However, you forgot one key feature re: video in your head-to-head: color science. That comparison video from the Canon just looked way better than the Sony.
Yeah but if you have no raw, you can't post process the video as you want as the camera already does some kind of pixel interpretation. Plus it takes much more time. And still I've never seen as good skintones from sony as from canon yet (in video!).
The Sony has IBIS, better dynamic range, AF, FPS, video slomo, no 4K crop, cheaper sharper lenses ... and you can't call it between the two 🤔... oh it's the flip screen 😅
Don't forget the dual card slots in the Sony. That said, I sold my a7riii and downgraded to the eos r. I'm a lot happier with the eos r mainly due to the grip comfort and general ease of use. Picked up the RF 15-35, RF 50 and RF 85 and have been blown away with the IQ. It's a lot like the PC vs Apple comparison. Sony packs their cameras with top tier specs and options (PC) while Canon uses a more intuitive ecosystem approach (Apple). Can't really go wrong either way.
I will admit I don't care for the vlog style and seldom watch them. The flippy screen seems to be only for them. How hard can it be to keep your head in the shot when you are holding the camera not 2 feet away from you with a wide angle lens and why do you need to see yourself.Just seems like a waste to use either of these cameras for that purpose.I would never choose the inferior video camera just because it has a flippy screen. That's nuts.......Still love your reviews....Keep them coming.
I watched this and the Sony is clearly the winner in more categories IMHO. It is a stretch to say there is no clear winner vs the EOS R. I hope you were not getting too much heat from Canon and its fans from your first review of the EOS R. I was a Canon pro user for 40 years but switched to Sony and have never looked back. Sony has the most advanced fullframe mirrorless system NOW, hands down. The Canon has too many shortcomings and deal-breakers for me and my professional and personal work. Sorry Tony. Cheers
Is your opinion remain the same with Canon firmware 1.4 ? I am in the process to decide which camera to buy or wait. The Canon R mount lens are very good but expensive whereas Tamron has reasonable price lens for Sony The Canon R has a device blocks the sensor whereas Sony does not. You mentioned about the dust issue with Sony. Is this a seal breaker? Do you know if there is a stand-alone GPS unit can to use it on A7Iii? Keep up the good work. Thanks
Great and informative comparison. As a Sony shooter I'm glad they have some serious competition :) one thing I do not understand - with weaker dynamic range and fewer native lenses why are you recommending Canon for landscape?
Solid review! As an action shooter and Canon guy, I'm extremely disappointed with the frames per second performance in auto focus mode. That camera would be virtually useless to me. I do have a question though.... Is the Sony continuous auto focus better than the Canon AI Servo mode auto focus?
Hello @Tony &Chelsea Northrup thank you for this comparison as I am in the market for a new body and considering these two models. I'm looking forward to your full review of the EOS R. The low AF-C fps is very disappointing. 2-4 frames on only a 30MP body is a massive step backwards. That's 10-yr old 5DII territory...pedestrian. Curious, is it possible for Canon to improve the AF-C fps in a firmware update?
FW upgrade will not fix slow sensor-readout speed that is causing most of these limitations (4K crop/rolling shutter, slow fps while tracking...). Sony had similar limitations in gen 1 & 2 of A7-series, but they doubled (doubled speed = halved the time it takes for readout) full sensor readout speed for gen 3. In mirrorless the camera is pretty much dividing "sensor time" between AF & exposure so with slow readout speed all the time making/reading the exposure is time kept away from AF/tracking.
Good review! One cool trick I learned from Sidney Diongzon is to make the Af response fast during 120fps recording on the Sony. It’ll appear really fast during normal playback but when it’s slowed down to 24fps it’ll be a nice buttery transition during slow motion.
Hi Tony, i want to know your opinion. What do you think about the canon colors vs the A7III? I like the colors from canon, but i want to know your thoughts about it.... Greetings!

The Sony is CHEAPER by hundreds of dollars, and better in so many other aspects.
hikyletaggart the canon has higher resolution, which translates to sharper images. In photography that’s about the most important feature.
Well Sony.. I hope you learned something from this....
GIVE US A DAM FLIP SCREEN !!!
Lol... 🤣
@@zjtkk08 for example the panasonic gh5s has a flip screen
@@jakobroider6014 in full frame! even panasonic full frame had to find a work around for flip screen
Great, honest review - I have the A7R3 & A9. Used to have the 5DSr.
And now with new update from Sony. New eye AF permanently haha
After warrenty Sony dead
I'm not sure but it looks like the Sony won all the individual tests (focusing, frame rate, video, controls, AF, Speed, Dynamic Range, lenses, etc) but it didn't win the title?
It depends on the user. The Canon has a flip screen much better focusing with Canon lenses. Otherwise most people will be happier with the Sony.
Wouldn't people be better off with an EOS M5 vs the EOS R since the R crops so much? They could save a bunch of money and buy lenses with the money saved.
When vlogging support became so important to photogs?
He was sponsored by both.
Whats the use if its cropping while filming.

Hi Tony, any idea when Canon might bring out a mirrorless version of the EOS 5DS or 5DSr?
Tony a true gentleman/diplomat
The plus for Canon um..um..um
It has nicer buttons
No lenses, it doesn't focus but...
Dont worry he gets paid to confuse our wallets and cause us buyers remorse lol the sony is the winner
To me where the Canon EOS R fails is the massive crop factor when shooting video, so if you are going back and forth between shooting video & photos you have to completely reframe to get the same shot in the two different modes. I still find it hard to believe Canon did that.
That crop factor is just for 4K video
+ Krishna Poddar
I know - I meant to say that. And I reiterate: I think it is a massive fail to have such a large difference in the Field of View between the two shooting modes.
its 2018,many people shoot in 4k now.
@@chandan6119 4k allows for some cropping in post
yes 4k is the way to go now
The Sony a7iii also gives you the option to punch into aps-c mode, allowing you to move in tighter. Granted, you do lose some resolution, but it allows you to get the shot. (I’m a life long Canon pro who waited and waited for the Canon mirrorless, and then switched to Sony AFTER the EOS R was announced.)
For stills, you can do exactly the same thing by cropping your photo in post.
kristianmag true, however when you crop into apsc, the eye autofocus finds your intended target easier, especially if it’s at an event or party with multiple options.
With Canon, they give you the APS-C/Super35/Crop mode by default. Just selet 4k instead of 1080p and there you go. Instant zoom. Enjoy ;)
Thanks for the thorough review. Sony appears to be the winner despite having no flippy screen IMO.

Well, no.

It might be who is behind the camera who is counting pixels instead of learning how light works.
Your intro said "Sorry Fanbois but there is no clear winner." You then when on to show that the Sony was better in everything that mattered.

Why would someone recommend a newbie this type of camera anyways?
... who would be using their iPhone or Samsung.
surely a young vlogger would get more mileage from a cheaper dslr or m3/4 if you only want to film yourself do you really need an interchangable lens system?
Please check his image quality test video ....Canon having better IQ details n sharpness wise
Sony makes TV's they don't make camera's you silly billy. Tony is wise enough to know this.
Who gets into a full-frame ILC camera setup for selfies? That's what cell phones are for. Vlogging? Yes. Selfies? No.
From others I've heard the a7iii crops in 4k 30, but now I'm not sure 11:38. Does anyone know?
It crops just a little (1.2x I think). The Canon crops 1.8X.
Ahhh I see, thanks for the info. Always love the honesty of your guys vids, keep it up!
Yes Sony crops at 4K30 and I think it also crops at 4K25, which is sad. Only no crop at 4K24. Even if 1.2x crop is a little of a crop, it's still crop and not a very good thing.
Charbax Especially when using a wide angle lens & trying to get as much in frame. Sony sony sony, whyyyy? I guess their holding off for a7siii
@@charbax I don't think any mirror less camera does zero-crop 4k. Only pro cinema cameras ATM. I'd imagine next generation of Sonys and Canons and Nikons will do full width though.
Sorry Tony, Canon EOS-R is not hot
Mount size is not only for the purpose of smaller lenses. It allows larger aperture too in the case of the 28-70 f/2. It's all preference which camera to use, It can be rationally argued that Canon is at least a valid option, worthy of purchase, and even superior/inferior in specific aspects. Canon have things Sony don't and vice versa.
Indeed. Big ass sensors and barrelsize lenses produce stunning pictures. Sony is just a step lower on the ladder, with a shirtpocket camera on the first sport. ;)
@YouMeAndFresnoBob This is exactly what I was thinking!
Tony, the canon eye af test shown here was with the latest firmware?
No clear winner are you kidding me!
LOL!
If I was starting now and had the money for either of these two new bodies I would get an a7III or save a bit more and get the A7RIII (they are only 350 euros apart). Tony could you do a comparison of how the 24-105 Canon lens measures up against the SONY 24-105?
How is the 7iii only 350 eur cheaper than the Riii?
Check : www.e-infin.com/eu/category/mirrorless_cameras
I have the A7R3, it's amazing. The 42mp sensor is by far the best I've ever shot with.
What else did you shoot with?
This is why you guys are the best. Right front the start straight into the content, no b.s. only information that is backed by science.
Yes, so wait for the Pro EOS R model if you want/need those features
10 bit 4:2:2 (external), 1080p 120fps, IBIS, Non-cropped 4K, nice EVF and touchscreen, excellent weather sealing......I think the Nikon Z6 is worth a look when it comes out soon and we see brutal reviews...otherwise I'll switch to Sony from Canon. Unless we get something definitive from Panasonic full frame very soon.
www.theverge.com/2018/9/29/17916606/panasonic-lumix-s1r-hands-on-photos-photokina-2018
also nikon comes with bad AF, IBIS is much worse than sony...
and sony does external 4:2:2 (only 8bit, but it's better than internal 4:2:0)
Wait for the 2 Panasonic FF mirrorless cameras; they will smoke these two :-)
"Theres no clear winner"
proceeds to give example of every reason the sony is definitely the clear winner
The sony is the clear winner tbh
Except for the fact that it doesn't have a flippy screen and doesn't adapt Canon lenses natively.
Soooooo.... the sony is better in EVERYTHING except flip out screen, deeper grip and better screen resolutions but still no clear winner??
Mhhh 🤔
At the end I suggest winners for different types of users.
Well aso better EVF, sharper images, better build quality
According to this review... UNUSABLE/USELESS features: Canon 3 (Eye-AF, Silent shooting AF, Action AF). Sony: 0
The FPS rate on the Canon was shocking. Wow Canon. That is horrid.
5:25 The image comparison is flawed tho, it's still the same from the previous video where the A7III image is out of focus. There isn't almost any perceivable difference in detail between a 30 and 24 mpx sensor.
If you shoot a lot of video the sony kills the canon.
I own both, but I feel that EOS R is made more robustly in the sense of holding it, and EVF is also higher than EOS R by several stages. Moreover, the heat radiation effect and the drip-proof effect are high. And the color of the canon is familiar.
Do you still hold the same opinion 2 years later?
I’ve never owned a camera before and I’m thinking about getting an EOS R, will I regret this?
Very good and unbiased comparison, Tony! I personally haven’t used the Canon EOS R yet, so it’s nice to hear from someone who has actually used both cameras and isn’t just comparing two cameras based on a spec sheet!
Where's Chelsea? I'd like her to be in the video even if just to annoy Tony! :D
and for the boudoir future photoshoot ... ;)
Yep I totally agreed. Chelsea is much prettier then The great Tony.lol
Is Tony old or born with white hair like Dante?
😂 true that
Great review.
Despite what others say on here, I agree there's nothing in it for me between these 2 cameras - both are excellent, and I'd be equally happy with either.
Personal circumstances are very dependent deciding what camera is more suitable - and I'm still not sure myself which one I'm going to go for:
Sony - has no interval timer / timelapse, which is something I do often use
Sony - no flip screen is a weakness and I'm not talking vlogging. I always use the flip screen with my kids for fun selfies, and for fun family photo's when on outdoor trips
Sony - ergonomics are not great. Dated even. Usability is high on my important list and this is nearly a deal-breaker for me. I'm not a pro. I need something that feels comfortable for my beginner/intermediate needs
Sony - doesn't seem 'friendly'. I can't put my finger on why - maybe the menu's, the looks, maybe the feeling of using old technology with the lower resolution EVF/LCD
Sony - the 2 SD slots have no advantage for me at all. Not interested
Sony - tried and tested, and clearly a quality all-round camera.
Sure I'd do a few 4k, but in those few cases I'd not be bothered by the x1.8 crop
Canon - rolling shutter is worse than Sony. Although looking at the video comparisons, it's not that bad. If I did a lot of video this would be a deal breaker, however I do say 80% photos, 20% video
Canon - poorer dynamic range, I'm guessing due to the inferior sensor. I'm undecided how bothered I am about this.
Canon - image stabilisation actually looks pretty good on the video comparisons.
Canon - only a few lenses, however the lenses launched are all I need initially. I'd be keen to get the 70-200mm telephoto. Having access to all the EF/EF-S lenses in the meantime is comforting
Canon - poorer low ISO, but I guess I can correct issues in Lightroom, and I don't really get to the very low ISO's
Canon - "no joystick", although not having ever used one I'm not sure it's something I will miss. I do get how it would be useful
Canon - I prefer the look & feel of it by a long way
Canon - $190 for a USB charger?? What? If a USB-C charger doesn't natively work, then the camera cannot really claim to be USB chargeable, or even "USB compatible"!
Canon - EOS RP version very attractive option
There is no outright winner in these camera's. Both excellent. Its perhaps about deciding which deficiencies to accept and live with.
I'm wondering whether the RP version is a better consideration being cheaper, lighter and seemingly having a very similar spec.
So Tony, let me know if I'm way off with this summary:
The Sony wins for native lens selection, autofocus, video recording options, dynamic range, FPS, silent shooting.
The Canon wins for overall lens selection (with the adapter), resolution, the image stabilization, and ergonomics (unless you're back-button focusing).
Additionally:
If I were doing professional work, the single card slot would make the Canon a non-starter.
Sounds to me like perhaps one of the Fujifilm cameras would be right for you?
Possibly, but it's a bit late for that lol. Mistakes were made...
Hi... Thanks for the review. Which camera do you prefer for taking cooking videos?
What about the a7riii vs the eos R?
Eos R has no chance against a7r?3
Sony a7riv vs eosr
Why is everyone hating on Tony for not spraying the champagne all over the Sony at the end? Come on guys, you know what's what.... half of the points go to each camera BUT, the Sony wins in all those that really matter - not hard to figure out. So if you're deciding on one of these two cameras you wouldn't really need to hear the conclusion at the end of this video. You should just thank him for providing such a concise and informative comparison. What have you done for the photography community today....?
how much did Ford pay you to make this review?!?!
Hahaha, that made me laugh!
Chevy must have paid you well to laugh !! also am glad you did 😙
How much did Pontiac pay you to ask? Oh wait...
@@kevindiaz3459 oh snap!
Respect!
The cheaper A7iii destoys R.
XuQi Feng I’ve been trying to decide between the two, whats your reason for this?
Also how do you feel about the blue tooth/wifi to an external device to replace a second card slot?
ok im SOLD. A7III it is :)
KM Vlogs I’m sold, eos R it is!
I'm sold, Fuji XT3 it is!
I'm sold, Nikon Z7 it is!
I'm sold, none of these cameras will offer any more practical function than my current one.
I'm sold, Panasonic S1R it is!
Is your peak design lugs orange ,or is it just your color grading?
Orange
So fancy!
I guess tony will never review the nikon z's huh?
What Sony camera are you actually reviewing, Tony? The tittle says A7III but the Sony camera you are showing clearly has an R on it? Are you comparing the Sony A7RIII?
Price is another thing that makes Sony a winner!
If you have canon glass it's a no brainer.
the best review so far.. thank you Tony, what would we do without u
At the end of the day, its the photo images that matters, not menu usability or a flip screen, right?
any reply?
@@wikedwhich1 nothing...ended up getting the EOS R though.
@@troyr3478 and so far what do you think...why did you plumb for this ?
How could the EOS R cost more than the A7III it just doesn't make sense?
Because flippy screen
Because Canon is greedy...
Good Comparesion Tony, best review of the EOS R so far. Not too long and many points discussed
Why was Nikon not invited to this party?
Because Nikon didn't invite them to Hawaii!
Except for the ergonomics, viewfinder, and control buttons, the Sony A7 lll is clearly superior, especially in low light. The comparison graph in DP Review shows the A7 lll is superior in most categories.
Tony, another great review. I am ordering the EOS R, ( I have a lot of Canon lenses). I hope you do a review of the 4 RF lens in the near future.
Hello . Excellent review . I am planning to upgrade to full frame . Don’t own full frame lenses . My main areas are landscape and portraits . I shoot only stills and no video . What do you recomend . A7iii + tamron 28-75 + get wide lens for astro
Or
Eosr with 24-105
Is ergonomics of canon worth the relatively inferior sensor and lack of ibis. ( actually where i live there are neither of both available at display on stores)
Thanks in advance.
I’m all over the Sony once I ditch my Nikon 🤘
I never looked back after 17yrs with Nikon. Sony rocks with the A9 and 7riii, no clue about the 7iii, but have to believe it's a great camera.
Color science is not a big deal, you can get it done in post🙄
For photography and videography both which one to buy canon 80d , Sony a6300 , Sony a6500 please tell ????????
About DR. I think DPP 4.9 does a far better job with opening shadows than LR. Only use some extra CN-reduction. Can you test this?
Solid review! As an action shooter and Canon guy, I'm extremely disappointed with the frames per second performance in auto focus mode. That camera would be virtually useless to me. I do have a question though.... Is the Sony continuous auto focus better than the Canon AI Servo mode auto focus?
Billy Ray... yes, it is MUCH better.
Super helpful ! Best comparison video I've seen for these 2 cameras
Video autofocus too me was quicker on the Canon in 1080 than the Sony.
yeah the Canon's video AF is overall a little better
Hello @Tony &Chelsea Northrup thank you for this comparison as I am in the market for a new body and considering these two models. I'm looking forward to your full review of the EOS R. The low AF-C fps is very disappointing. 2-4 frames on only a 30MP body is a massive step backwards. That's 10-yr old 5DII territory...pedestrian. Curious, is it possible for Canon to improve the AF-C fps in a firmware update?
Yeah a firmware update might improve things but I wouldn't count on it
FW upgrade will not fix slow sensor-readout speed that is causing most of these limitations (4K crop/rolling shutter, slow fps while tracking...).
Greetings!
