Wow, what a contrast. But then again, it's the people using those tools and it makes a huge difference. You guys are such an awesome pairing, maybe even better than Peter and Matti because you guys are both really funny.
i dont think either comparison covers some of the most important points between the two cameras. The canon has no autofocus in 120p and also you have to shoot 720p. Some of the best shots I've gotten out of the sony was tracking a subject on a gimbal at 120p. Can't do that on the R. The other thing is the 1 card slot vs 2. And finally no in body stabilization. We all love canon colors, but those 3 things are all dealbreakers for me, whereas with the Sony I will take an extra 15 minutes to mess with the colors to get it where I want. These 2 reviews kinda missed the boat on the overall value of the a7iii. If the EOS R had just simply matched the a7iii with the 120p and given me in body stabilization and 2 cards I would leave Sony in a cocaine heartbeat. But for anyone who is serious about filmmaking, I feel that the a7iii is just a better overall tool for a variety of different situations and I didn't even mention the low light difference.
Cinema Heist Same can be said about Sony has crappy bit rate and only offering 8 420 100mbps, If you’re shooting a professional job that requires color grading then there’s only one option. And if I’m trying to get smooth shots I’m definitely not using IBIS i’m using my ronin s with either camera. Video is just not about the resolution it’s about the bitrate. The only thing that canon really messed up was the 120fps, they should just crop 1.25 to match the Sony 24mp. 4k crop is understandable because it’s a 1.25 more pixels at a high bitrate. Both cameras made compromises in the video department just different ways and I find it baffling that nobody sees it especially Sony fanboys. I can easily prove it watch a movie at 1080p 2k bitrate and 1080p 10k bitrate if you can’t tell the difference, I recommend you sell your gear and use your smartphone
the same reason i am using sony right now for shooting wedding videos. But i have the 5D mark IV as a second camera just because of the color you get straight of the camera. 1080p at 120p with auto focus was a deal breaker for me. For gimbal works sony is way to go.
Manny De Los Santos Productions I've got really good at grading Sony S-Log footage to match Canon mainly because my main camera is a C200. But yeah, once you get the colors down it's hard to tell them apart.
PS SLOG2 is flat enough to compare to CLOG. SLOG3 needs to be recorded on a recorder. Both are flat profiles but the SLOG3 is flatter and for best results - you must use it only in very ccontrasty scenes. 1. SLOG needs ~2 stops of overexposure by specs. So you were perfectly fine to shoot the Canon at its native ISO for CLOG. 2. You are totally ignoring the customization of the Sony profiles. It is something that can turn the tables. You can make a simple profile - Cine4 with Sgamut3 and boost the saturation a little. This will give you Canon colors and much easier to grade footage. You can tweak the Knee settings and get the smooth highlight roll off... Sony is giving you the settings to do whatever you want. 3. HLG - you have to try it... 4. 480mbits ALL-I is just as effective as 120mbits longgop codec. Yes there is a difference if you are shooting fast moving subjects of anything that requires more changes in the scene but you also get much smaller files with the longgop. My point here is that you both on your channels explain that the Canon codec is many times better and I suppose that you know the truth... they are pretty close. When you grade SLOG3 which is MUCH more flatter than the CLOG it is normal thing to have more problems with the compression. But with some simple tweaks the SLOG can be improved without losing any quality. The only reason to keep it stock is if you are matching it to other cameras like FS... And one more thing :) I have already seen other testers showing footage from those cameras and it looks like you and PotatoJet are trying with post processing to make the EOS R look better. As some people already pointed out: you should never shoot in S-Log 3 in low light situations. With custom color profiles you'll get a lot cleaner images. And shooting in S35 also doesn't help. The full frame sensor gathers a lot more light. That's also one of the reasons why I don't like the EOS for video. Hi Armando, got to your channel from Potato's video! You guys are awesome! Humble, friendly, honest and entertaining! Great vid, but why no comment on 4k on eosr is cropped and that 120fps is 720p? I had canon apsc system and lenses for a while before, but that (and low light) was the reason for me to go a7iii instead of eos r.
Thank you for the detailed video. I am a baby and maternity photographer and have always been a canon user. My question is, does canon EOS R a good investment in 2023?
Great video Armando! Your absolutely right shooting out of the box skin tones and highlight roll-off are definitely better! That default profile is terrible, (I don't even know why they even have it there) and with Sony all the profiles are super confusing even though they give you so many options. I really wish they would re-name them. Going down to PP1 makes the roll off much better but you still have about 9%-12% of ultra whites "hidden" above 100% IRE which does make that profile great for lowlight but for quick easy turn around there isn't a great profile out of the box, especially for those just starting out. Your exactly right that autofocus is much more cinematic where the Sony's is too quick out of the box, its like with Sony you have to tweak everything to get the best results which is a huge downside. I'm planning a comparison with just the EOS R vs A7iii (so I can match the same lenses) since I won't be comparing to 3 cameras. I was wondering if you shot everything in Super 35 crop mode on the A7iii, since then you no longer are using downsampled 6K to 4K footage which will result in less detail, 1.5 stops or even worse lowlight, less dynamic range, etc. I wish the Sony had that higher bit rate, especially for S-Log. S-Log 3 had great dynamic range but as you saw the footage isn't really usable because of the codec, so most Sony shooter stick with S-Log 3 which has better (but still not great) skin tones and much less image issues at a slight loss of Dynamic range (something like 1/2 stop). Cannon really does make it easy for people to focus on what they are filming instead of camera settings which is a big deal.
In fact, I think I need to make another "what I hate about Sony cameras" video. They've fixed a few things I complained about before, so maybe that will help.
@@MaksimYuryev how does this video compare with the one you did recently comparing the video quality from several mirrorless cameras? Based on your video, canon performed poorly. I'd like to know your thoughts on this?
Personally I prefer the Sony color. Check out Sean Tucker's channel. He did a more comprehensive and accurate skin color comparison. Also Gerald Undone did a great video on color science, very insightful.
Jeff Luo I think Potato Jet said it best in his video, image colors are like art. Just because someone likes a specific art piece doesn't mean it's good or bad. I think both cameras give you great results and in the end you have to pick what works best for you.
I watched Sean's video but you can't really apply it to shooting video. He is editing raw images, good luck grading 8 bit video like that. So the straight out of camera colours are kind of important for this test. If you prefer Sony that's great but the majority of people seems to prefer canon in this test.
You guys are a great team! Thanks for the vid, now off to the 4K vid (which I may have seen already, but my EOS R just arrived today so I'm brushing up). My Weebill S arrived a week ago, so fun in my future!
So I am stuck between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7 III. I like to shoot a lot of concerts, nightclubs, parties and occasional portraits. I have been using the canon 80D and its not bad for what it does, but I've been looking for something that does better in low light and does better focusing on movement. I might want to get into video at some point but mostly just photography at the moment. I don't know if the differences between these are so big, but if they are not I am thinking of just getting the EOS R because I enjoy the bigger body and comfortably.
in low light sony is better. IBIS 5-steps(so, you can shot for example at 1/50 for stills). non-crop 4k. 1080p/120fps with sound. better eye-focus, faster low-light focus.
Thanks for your videos!!! What lens for Sony A7iii do you recommended for children tripod filming in a bright studio setup (6 meter x 8 meter) like "Barney & Friends"?
No sure which to go for Sony A7III vs Canon EOS 6d mark ii I want a camera with amazing image quality and dynamic range mostly gonna shoot portraits and models in natural light my budget £2000= $2500 for body’s and lens any suggestions pls if there is better alternative pls by all means
Keeping them at the same ISO level was a big mistake. The best comparison would be each of them at their native ISO. When they are not the dynamic range decreases greatly
There’s a lot of Sony sales associates on you tube posing as video experts it’s pretty common knowledge that canon has been on top of the dual purpose photo /video camera game for a decade are more know since the 70d anyways , if you were on a movie set and needed a quick 3rd angle shot no one pulls out a Sony’s a series camera where as a 1dx2.... yeah not to mention glass and mount and a smooth AF Sony has gotten better but they aren’t on canons level yet no matter what any youtube pro tells you.
Who uses standard profile ? Besides amateurs ? With the grading I like the Sony colors better, but more importantly why did the highlight fall off test was done in standard profile ? That’s really the kind of test we need to see in slog at least slog 2. And did you try HDR on the Sony ?
This was very cool. EOS R had much better colours but after grading that advantage goes real quick. The highlight roll off is much better then again the A7iii is punching a lot above its weight
kapil busawah You're missing one point though. He had the Canon images to 'match'. If you don't own both cameras you can't do that, so you're just guessing at colours.

highlight roll off is extremely adjustable on sony a7 iii, just go to the picture profile and knee settings, you can practically do a tone curve adjustement there.... helpguide.sony.net/di/pp/v1/en/contents/TP0000909110.html people who have sony should really check those manuals, they are not even 3 pages but makes you understand every setting
don't need another camera to match. X-Rite Color Checker. That's all you need. Davinci will even automatically grade for you. Will improve canon's video also! :)
Hello sir i have question about which camera should buy a6400 or a7iii ?? I'm using now canon750d and want to upgrade my usual usage is to get best clarity pictures and some videography work..pls help me
For me the options you have are very different, the a6400 matches on a midrange level while the a7iii is on the top tier of mirrorless cameras. If you think you will use it for a very long time and it would be a good investment probably get the a7iii but if you think the money you are going to spend would not be worth it for taking pictures and not earning the money back, you could get the a6400 with great lenses.

I really enjoyed your collaboration with the kid from UP. Your videos were informative and fair to both cameras. Unfortunately I'm even less sure of which one to buy now but that's OK because I have time to save up some money.

Superb comparison between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7III. Appreciate if you can do a continuous shooting comparison review (burst mode) (which is more important for wild life photography)
do you know if the eosR looses face af autofocus when using hdmi out in 4k (does the screen blackout?), this is my main concern with the a7iii in 4k, (although I heard someone mention it still works if hdmi out is set to 720p out, would just be nice to have a directors monitor and keep face af)
Can’t say 100% with the R, but on the 5D IV and 1DX II you get all the same AF on the external screen. Pretty sure there are two modes on the Sonys as well, but don’t know about their face detect. On the Canon’s the external screen is much nicer in the clean feed option (but then you need the main screen to see certain overlays etc). In the non-clean mode the external screen replaces the main screen.

Isnt SLOG 3 a bit more grainy compared to SLOG 2?
WAZZZAAAAAAAAAAPPPP!!!!!!!
Potato Jet you mean WAAAZZZZUUUUUPPPP!!!???!!? 😂❤️
why not compare slow mo.... ??
What's UP!!!!
man that pimple really sticks out in this video
Hi
Why didn't you compare c-log to the a7iii's pp10 with 2020 hlg? Using a Sony's standard profile defeats the purpose of the test.
Exactly
Great video as always Armando! I am rocking a GH5, Canon M50, and a7III right now but was eyeballing that EOS R for a change. I just love cameras now since starting a RUclips channel.
wow, 3 camera brands and 3 different sensors....how does that work out in productions if I may ask (mount and colour wise)?
Hi Armando, got to your channel from Potato's video! You guys are awesome! Humble, friendly, honest and entertaining! I find both the comparison videos amazing as both of you are field experienced and is someone who knows what's what and what's required in the field. Your videos are far honest and more practical than what other RUclips "reviewers" put up. Thanks for that and both the Cameras are amazing in their own ways! And please do put up the C200 vs EOS R comparison! You got a subscriber!
Thank you so much for stopping by, working on that video as we speak!
it would be amazing if they add 120fps 1080 with firmware on the EOS R...
Great vid, but why no comment on 4k on eosr is cropped and that 120fps is 720p? I had canon apsc system and lenses for a while before, but that (and low light) was the reason for me to go a7iii instead of eos r.
Great video man. I've been doing some studio shopping for a new job I just got and your videos have been SUPER helpful. Keep it up!
This is the first test where any comparable camera beats a Sony in low light, speed focus and video recording. This was a fun review!
I like the fact that you guys get along very well.
uuuhhh! The Up guy in the video! What a nice surprise!!!
Thank you for the detailed video. I am a baby and maternity photographer and have always been a canon user. My question is, does canon EOS R a good investment in 2023?
wow there is no breathing on the canon 16-35mm II...and the color contrast is great
Great video Armando!
Nice videos Max!
In fact, I think I need to make another "what I hate about Sony cameras" video. They've fixed a few things I complained about before, so maybe that will help.
Please do some test on still images, not video, when shooting sports and moving subjects. See which autofocus is better/faster.
Looks like to have a Canon Eos R and Sony A7III next to eachother would solve the problem since they both fill eachothers shortcomings more or less.
Also Gerald Undone
did a great video on color science, very insightful.
Jeff Luo I think Potato Jet said it best in his video, image colors are like art. Just because someone likes a specific art piece doesn't mean it's good or bad. I think both cameras give you great results and in the end you have to pick what works best for you.
I agree. Canon is too yellow
*I gotta give it to the Nokia 3310, the image was just a lot sharper*
Yeh!
I love the versatility of the Canon flippy-screens, compared to to the 'limited' Sony screens.
makes me wanna switch to EOS R, can you do a video on rolling shutter? I plan to get one for making music videos
You have canon or the sony?
So I am stuck between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7 III. I like to shoot a lot of concerts, nightclubs, parties and occasional portraits. I have been using the canon 80D and its not bad for what it does, but I've been looking for something that does better in low light and does better focusing on movement. I might want to get into video at some point but mostly just photography at the moment. I don't know if the differences between these are so big, but if they are not I am thinking of just getting the EOS R because I enjoy the bigger body and comfortably.
Damn I feel you bro. I'm stuck in your same exact condition. Been using the Canon 80D for two years but it just doesn't perform good in low light.
in low light sony is better. IBIS 5-steps(so, you can shot for example at 1/50 for stills). non-crop 4k. 1080p/120fps with sound. better eye-focus, faster low-light focus.
Can you do an EOS R vs. original Sony A7S?
Thanks for your videos!!! What lens for Sony A7iii do you recommended for children tripod filming in a bright studio setup (6 meter x 8 meter) like "Barney & Friends"?
Curious about your SKB backpack, where you bought it?Official website can't found it.
Curious what would happen if you turned on auto eye focus on the sony camera.
An experienced videographer can make any camera look better or worse however he or she likes.
Keeping them at the same ISO level was a big mistake. The best comparison would be each of them at their native ISO. When they are not the dynamic range decreases greatly
is crazy how other videos comparison that i saw had sony winning all of the one that canon won on this video, something is weird
Laertes the barber yes... these guys know what they are doing.
Laertes the barber if you leave EIS ON which is the electronic stabilization it crops in to the image and really degrades the quality.
Its all a matter of settings in the end.
yep, this video is very bias and intentionally favouring Canon.
For landscape, Sony A7 iii or Canon eos R?
please answer, choose eos r + rf 35mm f1.8 macro or Sony a7iii + fe 35mm f1.8, Truman for the answer
@@cooloox exactly.
don't need another camera to match. X-Rite Color Checker. That's all you need. Davinci will even automatically grade for you. Will improve canon's video also! :)
Haw many price Sony A73
tested the a7iii in s35? why not full frame? its much better there
Hello sir i have question about which camera should buy a6400 or a7iii ?? I'm using now canon750d and want to upgrade my usual usage is to get best clarity pictures and some videography work..pls help me
For me the options you have are very different, the a6400 matches on a midrange level while the a7iii is on the top tier of mirrorless cameras. If you think you will use it for a very long time and it would be a good investment probably get the a7iii but if you think the money you are going to spend would not be worth it for taking pictures and not earning the money back, you could get the a6400 with great lenses.
Was the ISO test done in 4k or 1080. I think the eos r in 1080 is quite capable at low light
Why does my eos R produce so muc more grain?? My iso 400 looks worse than his iso 10,000
Set high iso noise reduction to standard
Do the 10bit review.
It's nice to finally see some positive reviews of the EOS R after so much hate on the internet.
Bro I planned to upgrade my canon 80d to mirrorless camera....But i have a big confusion regarding canon R6 vs sony a7iii....so please suggest me that best came for me?
even as a canon user i assumed the sony would be better, but side by side, the canon always looks better. Im glad thats the case.
any test on stabilization? I would love to see the comparison on 5-axis IBIS and canon's IS!
Im confused-was the 4K on eos R tested at all?? I only see side by side comparison with Canon 1080p and Sony 4K
Better for RUclips videos and canon eos rp or sony a7 iii ??
This is like my 5th time watching this video... I love this collaboration 🥰 you guys nailed down with this one💪
Best Deal Window Tint glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
awesome comparison! Just one question. You guys only had one tripod to share between you both during the test shots?
I enjoy your videos way to much :D keep it up!!
I really enjoyed your collaboration with the kid from UP. Your videos were informative and fair to both cameras. Unfortunately I'm even less sure of which one to buy now but that's OK because I have time to save up some money.
Can somebody help me: 2 questions: 1)when he says slog 3 what picture profile are we talking about? 2)Also when you go into those profiles there is looooootttt that can be changed in those sony pictures profiles . Where would I learn how to change those as well?
love to see all this guys hanging out together
Too Funny! I just watched your Baby C200 upload and having seen this one 1st thought you were a Sony Only kinda guy! Loved both this and Potato Jets videos. Thanks!
Hey armado like your video. I have a question I what buy my very first camara which one should i go for canonr or sonya7iii
great video. I planning to buy mirrorless Camera . I would just love to see EOSR vs Sony A7R3. share me link if Done . Thanks
Superb comparison between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7III. Appreciate if you can do a continuous shooting comparison review (burst mode) (which is more important for wild life photography)
7:58 wasn’t the a7iii suppose to have a better dynamic range ?? Because the highlights are blown up on the Sony compared to the Canon
Hello Armando, I would like to ask you what adapter did you use for your Canon R, and if it is a factor for delay autofocus or not. Thank you.
Hi Sir, Which camera is this video taken from.....
Canon C200
@@mondobytes ok, thank you
What camera did you use to record those cool Netflix looking scenes. It wasn't either of those two. example - 2;49
Love the video. Can you post a link for your tripod please?
ShinyPrimer better yet I’ll post link to my review: ruclips.net/video/HusQYaUg5DI/видео.html
Good comparison video. Would you also compare EOS R vs Z7 or Z7 vs Sony A7III?
do you know if the eosR looses face af autofocus when using hdmi out in 4k (does the screen blackout?), this is my main concern with the a7iii in 4k, (although I heard someone mention it still works if hdmi out is set to 720p out, would just be nice to have a directors monitor and keep face af)
I own an A7iii and an EOS R btw so this video was so much fun! Zero Stress.
What’s your personal favorite?
HI I'm between the sony a 7 III, Sony a7R IV or the canon eos r for my music videos and for shooting artists etc I'm a beginner on this I would like to have the best setup I can have for $ 3000. I saw colors from the canon but I also saw some reviews that you can achieve those colors with the sonya 7III +create your own color science. I would like to be helped more interested in shooting artist life, portraits and for music videos production etc... Also the camera that you advise me to get and the lense for starting my content. Thanks Armando
happy birthday Armando
nice work guys love the colab yes please for more i have a c100mkii can you add that in the mix i know it doesnt have 4k but i know patato has one
Im new to all this but those points that Sony has lost to the Eos R, can they be fixed with a firmware update or its the internal components that make one better than the either and if its a software fix what firmware version was the a7III running at the time of this video?
Would it have been wrong to use Slog2 when comparing the log profiles?
9:48 , how many likes ? 50 , just 50 is enough hahahaha
These videos are the closest I've ever come to unleashing my inner fanboy. But I'll resist and say thank you both.
Likewise, thank you for watching!
Hallow ferriera
Haw many price Sony A73 please
love to see more collabs with potato jet!
Didn't know he was my neighbor so yes, there will be more!
Thanks for this, Armando. What were you filming your 'to camera' stuff on (you and Potato Jet at the beginning)? It was slightly out of focus. I see you talked about using the Canon M50 - the autofocus/tracking on the M50 is usually really good.
drutgat2 it was Potato Jet's M50 not sure what his settings were? Don't think it was out of focus it was shot in 1080P that's probably why it looks a bit blurry
Just getting into Videography. I'm liking the Canon EOS R, what lens do you recommend?
I was already convinced to buy the sony a7iii but after watching this video I was probably going to make a mistake 😬
What's the best one-size-fits all lens I should get for a a7iii?
Black Box I use a 24-70 f4 a lot. That and a 55 1.8 is plenty for everything I need. And not super expensive.
Hey, I know you're super busy - loved the review of the new Ronins btw! - but can you tell me the name of the track on the start of this video? I'm on epidemic but can't find it! Thank you so much and keep up the great work.
Hi, great video ! for the dynamic comparison, why don't you use the waveform of each cam and just see witch image is clipping the most ? thanks for this review anyway !
Thanks for the video comparison. Question, what camera did you use to film you both at night, the colours and noise levels looked good?
Marlon King Canon C200
Cannon 80d vs 6d which is better? 😪😯
