  • Canon EOS R Test Vs Sony A7III
    The Eastcore has the Canon EOS R. We test the EOS R with a Hands On review of the Body, Ergonomics, AF, Features, and Video Modes. Is it enough to make us switch back to Canon? Do Sigma Lenses work on the EOS R?
    Shot using the A7III, no picture profiles, auto white balance, no colour corrections, no grading, no overthinking.

    Good review that tells pretty much everything needed. I waited for this EOS-R but decided to go a7iii when I saw that this Canon camera would not be up to the standards required for my hybrid shooting. And the value simply isn't there in this EOS-R for 2300 USD.

      My friend has the Sony and I’m killing him with my Canon R images. So sad that Sony is far behind canon. They have no plans on releasing a 28-70 f2 lens. As a real photographer, it's in the lens. The body is obsolete in a few, no matter the tech. Sony has a lot of catching up to do. These guys are clwons.

    Very well balanced. I shoot both Canon and Sony and as much as I wanted to buy a EOS R to use alongside my Canon 5D Mark IV I just can convince myself to pull the trigger on one. I will continue to use my Sony A7x's along side it. I am not currently a huge video shooter but I am trying to learn and I see no need to use the Canons for that. Thank very much for the video and I think the approach taken and presentation was great.

    The hosts in the comments say they shot this review on the A7III, no profile. Why do people gripe about the Sony's color science? I'm not saying another maker's might not be better...but the people in this video look totally realistic, color-wise. Why is "color science" such a big issue against the Sony cameras?? By the way, I didn't like how small the a7iii was either as my pinky also wouldn't fit. Get the Vello battery grip for $79, problem solved. Mine came the other day and I shot with it today. MUCH easier to hold and feels great now. I always get grips though as I am a portrait shooter and love that extra shutter button. They also make these little extenders for the a7iii for like $50 but I figured I might as well just pay a little extra and get the full on battery grip, its great.

    • @jcbarker1
      @jcbarker1 6 лет назад +1

      Michael Bell Sony makes that little extension grip for your pinky as well...it’s not cheap but it’s really well made and makes the grip so much better on the A7riii.

      When I bought my A7iii I also bought a base plate that extends the bottom of the camera by around half an inch. Now it's basically perfect and the feel in hand is much better than it is without it. No need for a huge and heavy battery grip.

    Thanks for the video. You did fail to mention the native glass which is the area I'm most exited about. The EOS R is more of a mount launch than a body launch. The native glass is incredible. The new zooms are sharper than any current canon prime at equivalent focal lengths according to Northrup and Co. Can't argue with IBIS, video and DCS gripes though.

    • @jcbarker1
      @jcbarker1 6 лет назад +1

      Pat Davey Yeah, I agree. I think much better cameras are to come. On Canon’s timeline, of course. But, they are clearly investing a ton of R&D into lens development.

    • @PK-ql5en
      @PK-ql5en 5 лет назад

      There is nothing wrong with Sony GM. For R so far you have got 4 lenses and actually when I read the reviews most of them are not really that good and have the same old issues: vignietting, astigmatism, not sharp corners, flairing, aberrations and so on...and that’s including the hyped 50mm - go and check it there is plenty of info online now. So the new Canon so-called spectacular lenses are a myth and nothing special.

  • @kevindiossi
    @kevindiossi 6 лет назад +19

    I loved the video. However, I do find it funny that the dual cards are such a hot topic to Sony users who didn't get dual cards until this generation of camera. One famous Sony Artisan mentioned it and claimed he couldn't work without it...yet he's been working without it for years and never mentioned it. Strange.
    I've had a card fail - four to be exact - and it's not fun. So the EOS R, for me, will not be replacing the 5D Mark IV. But I think it will be a great camera for traveling, shooting real estate, family portraits/engagement, and product photography. Traveling on vacation with a $3100 5D4 + lenses is questionable for me so I like that I can be very happy with a cheaper camera that has no loss in image quality. The tilt screen for real estate and product photography is going to be absolutely awesome to work with.
    Not a perfect camera. A clever one for sure, as Canon strategically placed it in it's lineup to compete against itself only and not Sony. It's like a 6D Mark II and a 5D Mark IV had a baby that has it's dad's eyes (sensor and better AF) and takes after it's mom in most other areas (design layout and single card slot). Looking forward to seeing a 5D4-level EOS R next year. Hopefully they address the single card and maybe even lack of IBIS.

Also I have never even turned on video mode on my 80D so all the complaining about video performance means nothing to me. Very well done!Thanks for that. Very well shot and well done overall. Ive been waiting for a comparison like this as I just sold my Canon gear and got an a7iii a couple weeks ago after 15 years with Canon but was still interested in renting the R. As a professional portrait shooter, 8:38-10:36 of the video was all I needed to see. The a7iii is vastly superior in both face tracking and eye AF, thats a deal breaker for the EOS R with my needs. Not to mention the lack of IBIS. I love shooting 135mm on location and shoot video quite a bit. Will be getting that same Sigma 135 and the video without the stabilization was poor. Definitely needs it at that focal length. You just saved me $250 on renting the EOS R, thanks!

  • @RTOneZer0
    @RTOneZer0 5 лет назад +6

    Canon lineage is in still photography. Sony's is in video. That's why Sony A7III is better in video capability than Canon EOS R. There is no surprise to me.
    As an enthusiast photographer, I'm mostly into the still photography (portraits and landscape) and I've invested a lot in Canon glasses over the decade. I'm not sure if Sony A7III convinces me to move from Canon into Sony platform. For me, a camera body is a part of the entire platform. My experience is having great lenses, which I think Canon does, would compensate a little shortcoming in the camera body. In my personal observation, the life cycle of a modern digital camera body is probably between 2-5 years. The life cycle of a professional glass is between 8-10 years if not more.

    Great video, the only thing that ticks me is the one card slot issue, did 35mm film photographers had 2 film cameras? I have a 2 card slot camera and the second slot I use it as an extended storage so if my first card gets full it automatically records images to the second card. As long as you don't take the card out of the camera (as removing the card and inserting it to a card reader and back again stresses the card and create the possibility of creating an electrical arc which can and will damage a card) I just leave them in and transfer directly via USB 3 cable which by itself is as fast as any card reader :-) I have done weddings and sweet 16 for over 11 years and have never had a card fail, just avoid removing and inserting the card and the camera will fail far before the card does.

    One card slot has been on the Sony’s for AGES and they were used by professionals including myself. It’s really not an issue at all. Also Sony May have better frame rates with resolution but the codec is pretty much garbage...don’t nail your exposure properly and you can kiss your highlights goodbye even in log. With ca on it pretty much any other camera you have some grace with that. Sure it would have been nice but i would sacrifice slow 120 slow motion for a better codec to be able to grade the way I and my clients like.

    Not entirely sure what you mean by the sigma 35 1.4 not working properly? You mentioned it was dark and the colors were off? Could you compare the canon 35 1.4 vs it at the same settings? I was thinking about getting this as a photos only body to the 1dx ii. I like that sigma lens.. that would be a bad deal.

    Excellent review. My guess for the poor AF tracking of the canon probably is down to the poor performance of its processor when compared with Sony and Fuji xt3. Fuji's face tracking used to be pretty poor too but with the updated processor the XT3's tracking performance is almost as good as the Sony's.

    I dont do video with my eos 80d. I probably wont do video with a mirrorless ff camera. I rarely do live view. I am not invested in great glass. I could leave canon easily. I understand that if i wanted to use my efs lenses with eos r. I could, but my reason to go full frame is to get away from the crop factor in ultra wide angle shots. I dont own any L series lenses because my 80d does not resolve thsm as well as it does with efs lenses. Which ff mirrorless is fo me?

      I'm right there with you, exactly the same situation. I'm leaning towards the R for 2 major reasons: all sorts of AF options on the touchscreen, and a better electronic viewfinder. The 30MP extra resolution is a small plus. Also I'm looking to expand on my lens collection with the R rather than buying fresh lenses at sizable premium.

    How did you find the famed "out of the box" colour science of the EOS R vs A7III (or any Sony)? People seem to go on and on about Canon colour. Suppose it almost doesn't matter when shooting raw, but having to play around in less in post would be amazing.

      Sony still has some zombie looking skin here and there, but it is better. You can correct it pretty fast/easy if you understand color curves, if not, play with the sliders until you get it right. The one thing that I really hated on sony, is recording 8 bit and trying to correct fluorescent looking greens/yellows that can occur around golden hour with grass etc. It usually would fall apart before I could get it fixed.

    It seems like Canon is feeling out the market with this Camera. If you think of it like this, Compare the Old A7 and A7r to the competition back then, they were extremely lacking by large margins in almost every category. Now look at this first attempt by Canon at a Full frame Mirrorless EVF camera, it falls a bit short but not by very far. When they throw in a second card slot and possibly in body image stabilization then using that camera with the new 28-70 F2 will seem like an incomparable option.

      I think it just becomes advantageous to be able to take shots without having to have your camera tethered to your face, tbh. When we first switched to mirrorless, we instinctively used the VF. As we realized that you can get better angles with less effort by using the LCD without any AF penalty and a better interaction with the touch screen, we naturally began doing that more and more... Until eventually we were free of our habits of bringing the camera to our face. Now, we really only use the VF if it's too bright outside to easily see the LCD.

    2.Ability to show rec color for monitoring while shooting log.
    3.Usefulness of Focus Guide (better than peaking).
    4. Usefullness of filter adapter at this timeline where people will be using more non RF lenses.
    5. No mention of mode thumb wheel customization (will be similar ergonomics to Nikons) when you are not comfortable using M-fn bar.
    6. 10 Bit 422 (great for green/blue screen shots).
    7. Asthetics of footage/skintone rendering in mid-higher ISO (eg. plastic looking skin, natural sharpness etc).

Have used it for a few weddings and it's worked great. I let the backup go to my phone which allows me to either email or message the client instantly with the images. The plus to this dares I beat the friends and family with their Instagram posts of the clients wedding. So if you use the camera like this the one card slot should not be a big issue.

    Pretty much what I concluded, it was a shame as I waited patiently for this Cam I have many great Canon lenses. I should have gone with Sony a way long time ago when the A9 came out. At least waiting has seen good price drops on the A9. There is also some promising results using the MC11 so I can move over easier. I don't think Canon R2 will be any better they don't appear to care much what the competition is doing so I doubt any of the issues with the R will be addressed. They will keep the stupid slider and won't put back the joystick forget seeing image stabilizer in R2 they won't change but want people to change their views instead not really a customer oriented company unlike Sony.

      Unless you are a sports shooter the EOS R is a perfectly valid camera. If you need fast action and want mirrorless by all means go with the a9. However once you use heavy lenses the body of the Sony’s can feel mingy and small.

    Great video! I think a lot of people are very caught up with reviewing the camera based on it working for pro use. Yes, I know Sony has it all LOL.. but, this is not meant for that at all. I feel like it's best to wait for the EOS R "pro" which is likely not far away, and then this all makes far more sense. The EOS R at that point will be an amazing backup body to the next Canon they release etc. Frankly as a wedding pro, who shoots.. images, this is really about perfect. Except for the one card slot. But, this is me being a pro, and choosing to want to use a camera because I am excited! It's not fair to Canon to expect pro features on a more armature targeted camera. It's also not fair to expect them to "compete" with Sony on features and price. Just because they want to give away the farm when the market was open.. does not mean it was the smart move for them in the long run.. I think if we give this all another year we will see everything is going to tighten up a lot, and the gaps between the offerings will be almost nothing, and at that point will be based on where your already invested in. The EOS R shows where Canon is going.. and I think this is going to be a lot better than anything Sony has, or will be offering.. I am betting the farm that the next announcement from Canon.. will be insane! But yeah, as a wedding shooter I worry about one card. For the past 6 years I have used a 1DX. and want to get rid of it! Although I do remember a time when one card was all there was (5D, and 5D2) and somehow that was okay :-) I do see that there is an automatic wireless transfer option to smart phone! No one is talking about this, perhaps you can get more subs and views if you do a dedicated video on this ability, and see if this maybe a workaround for wedding work in the field! I have a Samsung S8+ and I can load in a 128gb SD card in my phone, and if the wireless transfer works.. wow! There is a live back up right there! :-) Something to test and fool around with!

    • @JoaquimGonsalves
      @JoaquimGonsalves 6 лет назад +1

      Great point about the wireless back up. But as someone who uses the 7d ii and the 80d, I feel the wifi option might still be inconvenient. Moreover it will suck more battery from the camera since you need to switch on WiFi and Bluetooth as well.
      Having said that, I am aware that the version of their wifi on the R is slightly different. Let's see.
      In my experience though, the in body real time back up is a no brainer at the moment.
      Hopefully someone tests this out. If I can procure an EOS R on rent (which is difficult to get so soon on rent in Dubai) then I'll just do it myself.
