If this was GoT, Sony would be House Targaryen. It came out of now where, had innovative ideas, forged fruitful alliances, and set the world on fire with victory after victory. Nikon is House Stark. An established house that seemed to be on its way out, but has suddenly become relevant again. Canon is definitely House Lannister. An old, established house resting on its former glory and too inbred to see the world differently.
This view of Sony is quite ridiculous and probably a phantasy of yours, inspired by GoT. Sony is a multinational corporation that has a plethora of competences and resources, and it has been in the mirrorless digital photography industry for a long time, starting in 1996, a time when other companies still were trying to ignore digital. In addition, Sony has been in the imaging industry for an even longer time, starting in 1968. A company like Sony doesn't come "out of nowhere", they have a history of doing things, and their current product line is a seamless continuation of what they did in the past.
Godfrey Graydon Um , dude, first off it’s a joke. Second, the topic is full frame mirrorless cameras. Canon and Nikon were well established camera manufacturers and even taking into account their acquisition of Konica Minolta, Sony came out of nowhere and single handedly created the full frame mirrorless market. The A7 was announced in 2013 and it’s taken Canon and Nikon 5 years to release their 1st gen models. Sadly, The Canon in particular seems outdated already and like it was created in a vacuum . Does any one at Canon have a FB, RUclips , IG or Twitter account because Canonites were telling them exactly what they expected and they fell way too short. Instead of it being tomorrow’s camera today, the spec sheet reads more like yesterday’s camera today.
3:50 I want to highlight even more that Sony lens protocol is open for 3rd party manufacturers. So Sony won't change it like Canon/Nikon can do, thus making some 3rd party lenses not to work properly in C/N body. There is examples on this in past.
I bought a Sigma 120-400 lens for my Nikon D3300 a year ago. AF worked but OS didn't so I updated the camera firmware. OS started working but AF stopped. I sold the D3300 for a D300 just so I could use the lens. And there were so many cases of people with Sigma/Tamron lenses that stopped working as soon as they updated their firmware or changed to a newer body. Also with the new AF-P lenses Nikon has, the fact that they don't work on older bodies is so ridiculous to me.
The 3rd party lens makers will have their firmware updated soon, and right now only Tamron does not work on Nikon Z cameras. They will soon have Z mount lenses themselves because the flange distance and diameter makes it easier to create lenses of high optical quality. The little kit lens 24-70 f/4 Z mount lens is likely the sharpest zoom corner to corner of any on the market. In my tests on a Z7, it was clearly superior to the 24-70 2,8G and E versions which are highly ranked. It has a simpler optical formula so it can be smaller and lower cost.
@Wilhelm Rothstein the Leica L-mount is only "open" to those who are in the L-mount alliance... (Panasonic, Leica and Sigma). Better than Canon/Nikon, but definitely not as good as full open-source Sony.
Aniv Khawaunju LOL, I'm sure Peter McKinnon couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks. I think he knows enough about what he buys to not need someone else's opinion. Let's say you bought a camera and loved it. You got excellent results that were just as good as great images coming off the other manufacturer's cameras. Would you suddenly sell it because a reviewer didn't like it or said something else was better? Do you have your own brain or just go by what someone else tells you?
Serves Canon right. They’ve hobbled their sub-prime cameras for years, whereas Sony has thrown absolutely everything into every release. And I’m a Canon shooter.
@@nordfresse because the a7iii has been out a lot longer than the others, 10bit was not essential back then, the a7iiii will have it along with a flippy screen, see sony actually listen to there customers.
The A7iii is less than a year old, it's not been out a lot longer, just a few months. 10bit not being included was a choice, probably to offer everything else they give for 2 grand which is great value. The GH4 could output 10 bit with a log profile in 2014. No camera manufacturer wanted to put it in besides Fuji and Pana, since Nikon were late to video and Canon and Sony were protecting dedicated video lines.
@@nikhilchandra9258 Yes Sony want to be No 1 and as a result are trying Canon on the other hand have given up. Looking to become another Kodak or Nokia
I do find it somewhat interesting to talk about IBIS being a standard that all cameras should be implementing (and I firmly agree with you!) yet you chose to shoot the episode on a GH5s, a camera with no IBIS. The GH5s is capable of fantastic imagery but it seems the lack of that feature didn't sway you from using it. I've been using the R now daily since launch and while it isn't without its flaws, it has quickly become my favorite camera to shoot on. The on/off switch is dumb, the touchbar is SUPER weird and the lack of IBIS is certainly less than ideal. BUT there are still things about it that keep me coming back. Internal CLOG with view assist is super helpful, and the colours really are fantastic with it. Since using this for all my video work I've had far more comments asking about my camera and what I've upgraded to than any camera previously. My GH5 just sits on the shelf now unless I need a shot at 180fps or a super tele shot handheld. I'm pretty excited to see what a more pro model looks like from canon, and specifically a second generation since thats when I would assume they would incorporate IBIS... WOW long comment whoops!
I have to tell you I have played around with the EOS R a couple times now and didn't find it amazing, but I had someone who had a Nikon Z7 the other day and they let me play around with it for a few minutes and the one thing that hit me was how amazing it felt in the hand and how premium it looked and felt. It really just felt like it was in another league over the other cameras out there. That really doesn't have anything to do with image quality and video and whatnot, but it's still a big factor when you are spending thousands of dollars on a camera body.
Nikon always does that clever though such simple thing of actually honouring their customers' expenditure by simply enclosing their hundrends to thousands dollars tech in more rugged and quality built housing, contrary to flimsy plasticky housings of Canon. Even if we are talking point & shoot or entry DSLR devices.
I had the great fortune to be in Tokyo when the Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras were released and at the largest camera store in the Ginza I compared the two. I agree that the Nikon had better haptonics, but such is completely subjective and obviously dependent upon the size and shape of one's hands. I suspect that most will be surprised when I opine that if one picks up the Sigma SD Quattro that the Sigma camera is clearly the most comfortable to hold and use. Of course, most would not pick a camera based only upon how such feels in the hand and needless to say both the Canon and Nikon would both be excellent choices.
They are like prototype cars at car shows - designed to make people go "wow" and are really totally impracticable. Big , heavy and expensive - missing the whole point of mirrorless
Get the adapter and use your old AF-S lenses. When Nikon gets around to making more glass you can ditch the adapter to take advantage of the form factor
Love it guys and I agree with all of your findings, I'm enjoying the Z6 and am actually astounded by the quality of the images and video in particular. I'm going to get a lot of good use out of this bod and I'm reinforced in my decision not to go with the Z7. Much better than expected and it's only going to get better. Thank YOU! Thumbs UP of course!
Frederick Dunn yeah my z6 has brought my portraits to a whole new level by the image stabilization and taking handheld shots. And in the next couple days we will get that Eye auto focus and hopefully that can be the game changer. Coming from a Nikon D800 this camera compete very well with the photo quality.
I'm also considering z6. How good is the face-tracking Autofocus in 4k Video? Can u tell me please. I want to utilise Video Autofocus for focus pulling on as many shots as possible. I am an independent film maker with very limited budget and a not very skillful crew n cast.
Vikas Tiwari I don’t do much video yet. But the couple times I tested it out using the ftz adapter and the Nikon 50mm 1.8g lens it worked pretty dam good. Compared to my older Nikon DSLR cameras its night and day. It tracks people great. Now fast moving people or objects I can’t give you an answer. But I don’t own any z-mount lenses but the options with older cheaper Nikon lenses to use with manual focus for video is endless. I love my Nikon z6 and now with the new eye auto focus firmware update it worked great on my last 2 photo shoots. But I have not tried a Sony or canon to compare for video but I love that you can do 10 bit recording to a external recording device like the atamos ninja 5 which will be my next purchase. I bought the z6 cuz I have a ton of Nikon lenses and I want to expand my photography business to do videography too. So this is a great start with the z6. I picked mine up for $1750 with ftz adapter from amazon dealer beachfront cameras. It was a great deal. Hope this helps some.
This is a very important video, we should not besmirch competition because it's not the right thing to do. DPReview's very objective analysis is a bitter pill to swallow. Many of my photographer friends still love Canon's DSLR/ lens lineup, though some of them have jumped ship to Sony's FF mirrorless systems. Admittedly, I am a Canon fan - but competition is good as it will benefit the whole industry and the consumers as well. If we try to praise subjectively the new offerings from Canon (or even Nikon) even though they are inferior, then doing this will make Canon or Nikon lazy or even procrastinate in their R&D.
I like Nikon's initial lens selection more than Canon's + Nikon has published lens roadmap. Canon's initial lenses are too expensive, also 50 1.2 has enormous vignetting which defeats the purpose of a such fast lens.
The Nikon lenses make a lot of sense for the Z6. Maybe not so much for the Z7 and I can understand, that they are not as exciting as the Canon lineup, but who is actually going to shell out that kind of money for the Canon lenses to use on a somewhat flawed camera.
@@alexanderhetzel8271 for me that 28-70 canon lens is just stupid. 1.4kg huge lens that has no stabilisation and no real wide end. All that compromise just to get that f/2.0 zoom ? No thanks. Who will use it ? Wedding ? Landscape ? Event ? I don't really know.
You are right, Nikon's S series lenses are smaller and sharper corner to corner than any zooms. I had use of a Z7 and 24-70 f/4 D lens and an FTZ adaptor on loan from the only cameras story in the city which had one. That lens really was impressive....compared to my 24-70 2.8 G and E versions, at f/4, the lack of distortion and zero drop-off in sharpness from center to edges, the S lens was clearly superior. I can't wait to see what the 85 1.2 does, Nikon claims that the Z mount will allow all their lenses to be sharp wide open as stopped down. After using the 24-70 S lens. Although the Z series look really good, the most compelling advantage will be S lenses.
Just tried the EOS R 1.4 firmware and it’s actually insane how much better it makes the AF. Definitely not the most feature laden camera but so much better now
*They all do not have a multi-aspect ratio sensors* so we could natively shoot in either 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, achieving *full field of view* and full megapixels. Why not, now that the limiting *SLR 3:2 mirror box* is gone? *Why are we still stuck in 3:2,* only using the 3:2 area of our expensive glass?
Totally, it'd also allow for smaller lenses for the same resolution and pixel-pitch. Fuji and Sigma have multi-aspect visualisation, but obviously still crop from 2:3
Went to a camera store to compare the Canon and the A73 and still was surprised at how expensive the canon is compared to the Sony. You can get the overpriced battery grip with the Sony for the same price as the bare Canon :( I love canon but they're making it difficult these days. If the Sony had the Canon grip, 10 bit and entry-level affordable lenses, i would tattoo "Sony" across my face.
@@ziginox That actually makes sense for everyone though, we have to remember this is Sony's "Basic model" competing with Canon-Nikon's ONLY mirrorless cameras, not the battle of giants at 6000$. It's going to be an interesting few years for gear, that's for sure.
New Canon lenses are so expensive as well! Holy crap its so absurd now. Canon and Nikon put overpriced price tags on new mirrorless models as they are "first generation". Still Canon lost so many people to Sony and so did Nikon. Fuji and Sony triumphs every time.
Dear Chris and Jordan , I am really looking forward for your epic Christmas edition with the best and worst cameras of 2018 and the shots ;-) hope your tradition from TCSTV continues here on DPreview.
I'm looking forward to the next Canon EOS R without the 4K crop and the built-in ibis. Unfortunately I can't wait around for that to happen. Too bad Canon my dollars will be spent elsewhere.
I use to shoot canon, and only Canon, I have switched to Sony right after the A7iii was on the market, I think I'm a much happier person now.... feels younger too haha :D
Everyone here just remember we still have Panasonic FF mirrorless to come out in the spring, and Sony has new cameras to be introduced as well as Canon's next EOS R, so there will be new surprises and a raised bar for newcomers Nikon and Canon to reach. Sony won't be standing still, allowing them to catch up. Cheers
It’s funny, but I got my Z6 with FTX adaptor this week and have spent the majority of my time playing with manual focus lenses. The camera has superb support for manual focus, and with IBIS old lenses are new again. Add the great video and they get even more interesting to work with. In fact for my first lens purchase for the Z6 I ordered a used 24mm Nikkor f/2.8 AI-S lens. I’ll look forward to seeing what S lenses come out. But for now I am having a great time with glass that is at least 35 years old.
Grimace427 I had the D750, but bought the D850 last year and that kind of relegated the D750 to use as a travel camera. I used that and a Sony a6500 for video. I sold the D750 and the Sony gear to pay for the Z6, as that camera replaces both. Now when I travel I will pack both, but primarily use the Z6, and pull out the D850 for landscapes. It fits in nicely with how I like to shoot.
I'm intrigued by your comment. One of the downsides I immediately felt was I no longer can use my exotic 28 1.4D lens with the new Z cameras. I would have to use manual focus :(
Rex Barcarse I have the 35D and yes the AF doesn’t work with D lenses. But MF works great. And with 28mm you may not do as much fast action, so may not need AF as much.
@Grimace427 Yup. Great lens. I've had one in my bag (or on my lens shelf) for nearly 40-years. I've made countless quality portraits with it over the years, dragged it up mountains in all kinds of weather, and used it hard. Most recently, I pulled it out and mounted it on my D800 for a studio shot -- "portrait" of a flower pot with a face. Tack sharp with some kind of beautiful characteristic that's hard to describe ... but it sounds like you've discovered.
I use the GH5 when we need to shoot quickly, or I plan to move the camera a fair amount. The IBIS makes a big difference there. In an episode like this where we have some time and the camera is stationary, I'd rather have the cleaner shadows of the GH5S than the IBIS. Different tools for different types of shoots.

@@thatjordandrake Slightly off topic but... I have to tell you that the colors (graded or not) are excellent in this video. A joy to watch. At the same time in some scenes background is too blurry (my personal opinion). Great job. Thanks!
@@DawidDoesTechStuff My wife is using it as her primary camera, so I don't have access to it as often as I'd like. I still prefer the handling and battery life of the Panasonics, so they tend to go out with me more often.
Nikon's DSLR has very small mount so it is impossible to make the rear element large enough for brighter lens. But the new z mount is the largest mirrorless fullframe mount
Is IBIS necessary for good photos? NO But if Canon is trying to compete with other bodies that have it, it's completely fair to give it crap for not including it.
Should be rephrased - Are any of the items mentions necessary for good photos? NO. But yes, the competition has it so the crap the EOS R receives is very much justified.
So, to use a racing analogy, the A7iii is the experienced driver who doesn't put a single foot wrong during the entire race, but the Z6 is the promising rookie who pushes his more experienced counterpart surprisingly close... and the EOS R showed up to the race drunk, and crashed on the first corner.
You mean a couple of camera mounts which have been in existence for only six months have fewer lenses than one which has been in existence for six years? I'm so shocked!
That is a good analogy but the A7iii has questionable durability from what I've heard with the lack of weather sealing and materials used. So it may win every race when it's working properly. But may also get the occasional DNF because it broke down during key races. But hopefully that's not true because I'm interested in the Sony A7iii.
My god your videos look so good. One point to mention that would make the Canon and Nikon attractive to their respective owners is silent shooting. Huge for weddings. I’ve used it on my G9 more times than I anticipated.
Peter Paul Chato that's one of a number of features not discussed in this video. The R crippled its Servo (I.e. continuous) focus mode. Silent shooting and high-speed burst (and one other feature I can't remember) are only available in one-shot mode, not servo. Supposedly a firmware update will fix that. But, why, Canon? WHYYYY???
Would you consider the Canon's firmware update as a game-changer? I am on the fence between the Eos R and the A7iii. I see soo many reviewers jumping ship to Canon as of late.
Randy Belaire me too. Canon to me just seems such a better user experience with the touch and flippy screen, simple yet very intuitive menu system, beautiful and large view finder, excellent auto focus, and a slew of many great lenses. Yes Sony may have many slight advantages but a camera (to me) has to be comfortable and fun to use also.
Even my D750 has better ergonomics than my A7iii. But as a hobbyist shooter,, I need a fast and easy way to catch the moment, just like with a mobile. This is exactly what my A7iii delivers. I can shoot and record videos, auto eye focus, face recognition, all very sharp to tiniest eye lash. I just need to compose/frame the image, that’s all to it. I cannot be more happy about the A7iii.
Nice to see some positive feedback on the new Nikon. I’m really looking forward to the second generation z series where I hope they improve the very small flaws ( yes everyone SMALL flaws ) Love you guys always enjoy your videos ❤️
As a Nikon D500 shooter, I don't think the Z6 is worth upgrading to yet (unless I wanted video, which I don't). But it definitely gives me reason to wait for the next gen rather than getting an FX DSLR
The new Nikon Z mirrorless hits the mark for me. I am looking at getting the Z6. And I may add the Z7 to it at a later date. The image quality coming out of the Nikon Z is stellar. And the video quality is quite impressive. Every camera has its cons but the Nikon Z has so much going for it that I rate this camera a 9/10. The Nikon Z6 image quality is impressive. And DPReview gave the Z7 an 89% rating which is as high as the Nikon D850 seeing that on a whole the Nikon Z7 is a more rounded camera though the D850 is a refined professional camera. Going back to the Z6, the fact that it beats Nikon's competitors in video quality shows just how much Nikon has achieved with this camera.
@@ibdaramy5455 One positive note, Nikon has revised their policy of only issuing bug fixes in Firmware. The Z cameras are getting new features and they stated that updates on features will be ongoing. The first announcement was a bombshell...ProRes Raw out of the HDMI. That is a BIG deal for video people who have so much more lattitude in post ad grading, like getting a Cine camera for simply loading the new firmware. The EYE AF feature and tweaked AF is a big deal for some. I don't care for it, since most of my shooting people, portraiture, and studio, I don't want the camera deciding where the focal plane will be, that is my job based on the intent of the image. I have the Z7 and D850 and the IQ is almost identical with an edge to the Z7 in JPG due to the new Expeed 6 processor. The other announced firmware update is use of the CFExpress cards that are 8 pipe, and 1200mb/s transfer rates. Other brands are needing to go back to the drawing board. Nikon obviously built in some very flexible fast hardware that is all firmware controlled. I expected the Z7 to be my small kit for walking around, landscape etc but since getting it, the pleasure I derive from using it, my beloved D850 sits in the bag 80% of the time. Manual focusing is a dream. The lenses released so far are really good. Several reviewers have cited that the 35 1.8 is the sharpest corner to corner of any 35 on the market. The MTF charts are very impressive. DPR said they were not exciting lenses....but I guess they did not use them, because they have lower distortion, sharpness across the frame and contrast compared to any others. That is pretty darned impressive for a $500 lens.
Hello, I need your advice please, I'm a wedding photographer & I'm confused weather to buy the z7 for portraits beside the d750 for the party, or get the d850 beside the z6. Can you advise me what to do please. Thanks
Thanks great review - the IBIS looks great on the Z6, and the touch screen AF looks good on the Z6 and is also a feature I aim to use a lot because I'm a hybrid event shooter. I shoot at awkward angles with little room to back up so the rear screen is actually just as important as the evf. I've used the A73 rear screen and it didn't do it for me. It's a shame about the single slot tho.
Oh i know.... if only other manufacturers would have thought about IBIS and touch screen shooting yrs ago.... oh wait, they did but the canikon fan boys missed out.... as usual
I can't disagree with much of what you said, but for me, I'm considering the EOS R. I shoot almost everything in studio with strobes and already have several Canon cameras and lenses that I use for shooting multi-camera video. I don't shoot 4k, so that's not important to me. I've considered switching to Sony, but the cost of the camera plus native lenses is just too much for me currently. The eye autofocus has me on the fence though.
@@mauibuilder1239 Indeed, the #1 reason the eos-r is a fail to me is being a Full frame camera that can't shoot Full frame 4K. The simple fact that each time you switch from photo to video or vice versa you have to reframe the shot to get the same fov.

@@WildBikerBill wait, how many canon cameras can do fullframe 4K? 1?
@ And they blew the opportunity to make it one more. Meanwhile, they have competitors (Sony, Nikon) that do it right here, right now, and I expect Panasonic to come on strong when they roll out their FullFrame offering next year. All of which puts Canon firmly at the back of the pack.
XT3 isthe best crop sensor camera on the market for the next month or two... until the A7000, but the Fujifilm X crop lenses might be the best for at least another year....
I’m a Canon shooter and I simply don’t like them anymore. They make these new great pro lenses for an amateur body. Why is this? It’s cause they want to force the EOS R to its users at a premium price before they bring out their pro body. That’s how canon makes tons of sales. Once the pro bodies come out, all the EOS R users will upgrade and keep the R as back up. They do it on purpose cause they know their pro users will buy the R as a waiting stone.
The lenses are going to stay, obviously. Canon's biggest uptake is the lens market. They undoubtedly make the best lenses for pro and semi pro photography and cinematography. The only thing that tops canon's lenses are higher tier cinema lenses like Panavision, Sony, Carl Zeiss, Cooke. And still Canon's cinema line is considered one of the best in film industry.
Finally! Thank you for the unbiased comparison. Unlike the Northrups who says Sony won in almost all categories but then recommends the EOS R... like wtf?
We put together a hands on comparison video of all three over a week ago, and we came to basically the same conclusions in all areas... Yet for some reason many said our comparisons were biased. I guess it's who says it, not what's said.
Looking for advice. I want to move into full frame. I have a d3300 and a couple of dx lenses. I’m amateur at best but want to step up my game. Seems like I could go either way at this time with Nikon and limited lenses (as they are pretty expensive) or go a3 and have more lens choices from Sony, sigma etc. What would you advise for the long term investment?
congratulate to Nikon, for the first time into full-frame mirror less camera, Nikon Z6 win three category, best in In Body Stabilization, best in Video Photography, and best in ergonomics. On the other hand, shame on the Canon EosR.
Agree with most of your points guys. but choosing sony over canon in ergonomics? you missed the mark there. I am not leaving all my lenses just because a new body has cool features I can wait another year for canon to put out the V2 mirrorless.
Depends, with the Sony you can customize everything, it is more that just the grip. Plus I argument that Canon will improve with V2 is flawed; as Sony will improve with V4 and they have shown to be the innovation leader. I do agree that it would be hard to leave if you own a lot of Canon glass; ALL cameras are GOOD today! There is no bad camera; just how they stack up against their peers.
Canon is still holding on to their stupid, outdated design of having the on/off button on the other side of the camera, so that you need both hands to turn it on vs. all the others where you just use your right hand.
I have the z6 and the d850. I bought the z6 to provide IBIS for my medium telephoto primes. It is wonderful taking photos of family indoors with an articulating screen and IBIS. Face detect works great but I need to limit aperture to assure the eyes are in focus.
When Sony had released its first full frame mirrorless cameras the price of the camera body of the Sony α7 was at around 1750$. The 2300$ of the Canon EOS R and the 2200$ of Nikon Z6 are not high. However Sony is offering the really affordable full frame kit mount lens FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS which is subsidized with the purchase of a full frame e-mount camera. Nikon and Canon doesn't do a similar thing with their full frame mirrorless cameras. So unless you have the EF or F mount lens with the appropriate adapter both the Nikon, Canon mirrorless cameras have a very high price with a native lens.
You should have included another very important deciding point...build quality and weather sealing. For those shooting outdoors or in variable weather conditions the Nikon is the clear winner, followed by the EOS R and far behind is the Sony. Considering how much the Z series was panned by the youtube posters before they even touched it, my own experience with it contradicted every complaint. The Canon and Nikon were built using materials of a higher level than the Sony which has no weather sealing and uses consumer grade jacks, connectors, fittings and sockets. It is pretty obvious that the Nikon was intended to last a long time and the Sony designed to the price point and to last only until the new model comes out.
Sony contrary to Nikon offers the full frame LA-E4 a-mount to e-mount adapter that permits the uses of screw driven a-mount lenses without internal autofocus and aperture motors. Nikon could have offered a similar adapter. That adapter will be bulky, heavy and expensive but many people have older Nikkor screw driven lenses without motors inside.
I'm Canon fanboy, I love this brand. But I'm afraid that my love story is end. I'm not thinking to switch at the moment but this EOS r make no sense. Pro price, pro lens, amator body. Why?
If you are fanboy, then you know canon NEVER release their new technology in their professional model first and some technology never make it to their professional model such as eye ball focus. They value stability more on professional models.
just getting ready to call it a night, ding, oh a full frame mirrorless comparison. hmmm. The one thing the New Canon EOS R has that really intrigued me is that adapter that lets you put the filters in the adapter so you only need one filter size. Nikon that was a surprise. IBIS you think that would be standard now days. Still enjoying seeing all the new stuff that comes out. Cheers

Thanks guys. Great video as aways and absolutely spot on with your assessments. For me the EOS R makes a good C200 'B' camera during sit own interviews, but other than that its really a pretty poor offering from Canon. I'm not sure why they thought it was ok to price it above the Nikon and Sony, and I'm equally not sure why I bought it !! Its just a really weak offering in series of weak offerings from Canon. Hello. I am using D5500 with 18-140mm & prime 50 f1.8G and want to upgrade to mirror less. but confused with Nikon Z6 or Sony A7iii. Please help to choose. Awaiting for your reply. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Thanks for review. I have question about battery life on z6 (photo and video), I see deferent numbers on internet “700 shots and 300 shots per charge” Which one more realistic and closer to reality? Dose Nikon z6 has overheating issue? Thank you)
I wonder if another way of scoring is to look for things that will really annoy people and score those heavily negative. Many of the features people compare have differences so small target users aren't going to be that worried, but the big negatives will stand out in day-to-day use.
Great sum up video. But I have to say I think the Nikon lenses are better selected. I agree that the Canon ones are more exciting, but especially for the entry level range won‘t find much use because they are very heavy and expansive. Makes more sense to me to first build up a set of very high quality 1.8 primes. Really wish the Nikon kit lens was a 2.8 or a 24-105 though
Great review...... I totally agree with 95% of what you said..... And I must say dpreview totally made a winning pick with you guys. They are now a more well rounded package.
Used my friend Sony & the system is very confusing. I loved the eye focus but Z6 isn't far behind & also catching up now. But I find Z6 so easy to use, so I'm going for Z6. Although I would love Z6 to have more lenses asap. Thanks!
Lots of hate for the Canon since it came out! I left Canon a year ago for the A7rii. But now I switched to the R and I’m totally happy, although I loosed some of the neat things of the Sony like ibis and 42mpx. There are points where the Canon absolutely destroys the Sony and that’s not only the grip. But also the viewfinder, the display, the touchscreen, the much better focus peaking and the colors and much more. I love the Sony and it’s technical brilliance but that alone doesn’t make a good camera and that’s what I learned in the year I had with the Sony. And as far as I can see many famous youtubers like Casey switched back to Canon for similar reasons. All in all it’s good to have a choice and that the manufacturers are pushing themselves to new heights. That can only be good for us customers.
There are just so many good cameras out there that you could seriously just blindfold yourself and pick one at random and be able to make great pictures. But I am not going to do that because I already have lots of Nikon glass and will look to buy MORE in the years to come out on the used market-- hope the prices stay good. Lenses make the biggest differences and are the most fun to play around with. Glad to see that Nikon mirrorless is off to a decent start. That's all I needed it to do since I won't be buying a mirrorless body until the next generation or after.
Using your made-up analogy, that would leave Panasonic as House Bolton? Which one of the Panasonic dudes is Ramsay Bolton?
Tundra Gosh, I don’t know. I don’t know any Panasonic dudes, but I guess we’ll find out when their FF comes out next year!
And then Fujifilm would be Hogwarts and Olympus would be Gryffindor. Am I getting this right?
The irony is that, whilst reviewing the latest FF wonders, this video looks superb, shot on a Panasonic 🤷🏻♂️
And nowadays they film on full frame panasonic, time flies
Also with the new AF-P lenses Nikon has, the fact that they don't work on older bodies is so ridiculous to me.
from all initial indications, the Panasonic may be the most expensive of the bunch
You got me when Jordan hit the slide 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yea bro
Peter McKinnon is fuming
He uses $6000 cameras (1dx2/c200) lol. And Canon competes very well from there and up.
This here is 2000-3000 talk.
Do you have your own brain or just go by what someone else tells you?
well he is sponsored by Canon so what does he care.
@@ZaberAnsaryOfficial Except when he posted that video about switching from his $6000 DSLR to the EOS R. lol
Don't annoy the Canon fanboys! Mckinnon is Canon's No 1 Shill!
Serves Canon right. They’ve hobbled their sub-prime cameras for years, whereas Sony has thrown absolutely everything into every release. And I’m a Canon shooter.
They have to, or else no one would buy them over Canon or Nikon.
Sony will not give you 10bit video out though. Why is that?
ON/OFF switch. It takes up the entire *uc**** left side of the camera on the EOS R. Not to mention the touch bar. 😑
That really doesn't have anything to do with image quality and video and whatnot, but it's still a big factor when you are spending thousands of dollars on a camera body.
this is how i feel with one of their camera, till grip start to peel off..
Most important is the image quality,etc..a camera is not a pant or shirt...
Jordan does look badass in the playground.
Especially riding that rocking horse!
The new RF lenses are amazing but they are eye-wateringly expensive!!
Sony GM lenses are cheaper than RF lenses?
Where is the weather sealing test?
But in all seriousness I think you made the right decision in terms of rank
Ditto. Nikon’s approach on lenses are more practical. Look at their F amount lenses. Canon makes great L lenses but the rest is crap.
@@enkodernovi3524 correct and who wants a 28 at the wide end? little or no use - fooled some people who drool over F2
Just tried the EOS R 1.4 firmware and it’s actually insane how much better it makes the AF.
Definitely not the most feature laden camera but so much better now
.... also the Z6 AF has improved greatly. I reckon there will be a few more updates coming as well.
Why haven't you shot the sunset?
What camera do you use for producing this video?
*They all do not have a multi-aspect ratio sensors* so we could natively shoot in either 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, achieving *full field of view* and full megapixels. Why not, now that the limiting *SLR 3:2 mirror box* is gone? *Why are we still stuck in 3:2,* only using the 3:2 area of our expensive glass?
Totally, it'd also allow for smaller lenses for the same resolution and pixel-pitch. Fuji and Sigma have multi-aspect visualisation, but obviously still crop from 2:3
Is banding an issue for longer exposures? (tripod night photographer)
banding only occurs when using electronic shutter. I always use mechanical shutter for long exposures.
Went to a camera store to compare the Canon and the A73 and still was surprised at how expensive the canon is compared to the Sony.
You can get the overpriced battery grip with the Sony for the same price as the bare Canon :(
I love canon but they're making it difficult these days.
If the Sony had the Canon grip, 10 bit and entry-level affordable lenses, i would tattoo "Sony" across my face.
It's the same story with 1DX or D5 vs the A9 plus battery grip.
@@ziginox That actually makes sense for everyone though, we have to remember this is Sony's "Basic model"
competing with Canon-Nikon's ONLY mirrorless cameras, not the battle of giants at 6000$.
It's going to be an interesting few years for gear, that's for sure.
Same here...my next upgrade I'm leaving Canon. They obviously don't care about their customers.
Now tell us about super-cheap Sony lenses.
New Canon lenses are so expensive as well! Holy crap its so absurd now. Canon and Nikon put overpriced price tags on new mirrorless models as they are "first generation". Still Canon lost so many people to Sony and so did Nikon. Fuji and Sony triumphs every time.
But how do the battery life compare ?

GH5S. We also list the camera used in the opening.
I'm looking forward to the next Canon EOS R without the 4K crop and the built-in ibis. Unfortunately I can't wait around for that to happen. Too bad Canon my dollars will be spent elsewhere.

Well done, the people who still like Canon surely must drive model T Fords and watch Black and White TVs
Cheers
the panasonic is just too expensive though, is it worth the $500 extra over both Nikon and Sony?
It’s funny, but I got my Z6 with FTX adaptor this week and have spent the majority of my time playing with manual focus lenses. The camera has superb support for manual focus, and with IBIS old lenses are new again. Add the great video and they get even more interesting to work with. In fact for my first lens purchase for the Z6 I ordered a used 24mm Nikkor f/2.8 AI-S lens. I’ll look forward to seeing what S lenses come out. But for now I am having a great time with glass that is at least 35 years old.
Grimace427 I have the 105 and it is incredibly sharp - so far test shots on the Z6 have been fantastic.
@DPReview Why do you keep switching between the GH5 and GH5S to record your videos?
I use the GH5 when we need to shoot quickly, or I plan to move the camera a fair amount. The IBIS makes a big difference there. In an episode like this where we have some time and the camera is stationary, I'd rather have the cleaner shadows of the GH5S than the IBIS. Different tools for different types of shoots.
@@thatjordandrake Slightly off topic but... I have to tell you that the colors (graded or not) are excellent in this video. A joy to watch. At the same time in some scenes background is too blurry (my personal opinion). Great job. Thanks!

What profile and format did u use for the gh5s in this video?
6:56
Oscar worthy transitioning and establishing shot.
At 4:03 you mention Nikon being able to make brighter lenses. What changed that makes that possible now?
Nikon's DSLR has very small mount so it is impossible to make the rear element large enough for brighter lens. But the new z mount is the largest mirrorless fullframe mount
their new mount combined with the mirrorless form factor allow lensen to be closer to the sensor, allowing for the manufacturing of faster lenses
Z mount much wider than old mount
Is IBIS necessary for good photos? NO
But if Canon is trying to compete with other bodies that have it, it's completely fair to give it crap for not including it.
especially in the range of price
I mean, it helps in low light, saves you some money with slower lenses.
Should be rephrased - Are any of the items mentions necessary for good photos? NO.
But yes, the competition has it so the crap the EOS R receives is very much justified.
Is IBIS necessary for good photos? Sometimes, yes.
Really makes a difference in low light. I wouldn’t buy a body without it now.
What was this shot on?
So, to use a racing analogy, the A7iii is the experienced driver who doesn't put a single foot wrong during the entire race, but the Z6 is the promising rookie who pushes his more experienced counterpart surprisingly close... and the EOS R showed up to the race drunk, and crashed on the first corner.
MrCaerbannog awesome analogy 😂😂😂
What about lenses? The camera first mentality is for people buying rebels at Best Buy.lol
You mean a couple of camera mounts which have been in existence for only six months have fewer lenses than one which has been in existence for six years? I'm so shocked!
MrCaerbannog comment does not make sense.
WHYYYY???
Does that A7III not have silent shooting? (a6500 owner, the silent/electronic shutter feature is pretty useful for skittish animals!)
@@JohnDrummondPhoto let's see how much improvement the promised firmware update will bring...
A7 III has silent shooting feature. Not suitable for fast moving subject coz of rolling shutter. Still very useful.
They all have it to some degree... that wouldn't be a reason to choose one platform over another.
And the worrying thing for Nikon and Canon is that Sony are probably already working 2 generations ahead of them.
I'm not so sure. Nikon and Canon now have a better mount.
I see that you are a hobby shooter with a D750 and A73.
Does single card slot for Nikon and Canon make it a deal breaker for pro shooters?
Funny how people are looking forward to the next version of a NEW camera - says it all really

The Eos R is awesome, don't knock it. Go out in the rain with a Sony it's dead!
Treat that eos r the same way canon is treating it customers. Throw it on the ground and step on it repeatedly as hard as you can.

@@mauibuilder1239 Indeed, the #1 reason the eos-r is a fail to me is being a Full frame camera that can't shoot Full frame 4K. The simple fact that each time you switch from photo to video or vice versa you have to reframe the shot to get the same fov.

Any idea if the recent Nikon focusing update change the opinions? Others seem to think the autofocus has improved dramatically.
On the other hand, shame on the Canon EosR.
sure. but not overall. still Nikon is ahead of Canon.
Um the eos R may be a bit behind but that doesn't mean it's not good
It's also the only xamera without banding from a phase detect array
Agree with most of your points guys. but choosing sony over canon in ergonomics? you missed the mark there. I am not leaving all my lenses just because a new body has cool features I can wait another year for canon to put out the V2 mirrorless.
Yes, another year and another model could change things. However, they are judging the cameras that are here and now.
@@jeffmiller6343 that is my point. I have 7 canon lenses and cameras are good enough i don't need all the bells and whistles of the best body.
Canon is still holding on to their stupid, outdated design of having the on/off button on the other side of the camera, so that you need both hands to turn it on vs. all the others where you just use your right hand.
@@nikoolix I can't imaging why you wouldn't have the power switch around the shutter button like Sonikon do.
I have the z6 and the d850. I bought the z6 to provide IBIS for my medium telephoto primes. It is wonderful taking photos of family indoors with an articulating screen and IBIS. Face detect works great but I need to limit aperture to assure the eyes are in focus.
I'm not interested in any of those cameras but I really enjoy to watch your videos! Fantastic work!
Which camera you used to made this video...?
This video is a cinematography masterpiece. Beautiful!
what movies have you been watching? i'm not saying the video here isn't excellent, but... c'mon...
Why?
the moment you said "BUT" I know you are never is a fan boy.
If you are fanboy, then you know canon NEVER release their new technology in their professional model first and some technology never make it to their professional model such as eye ball focus. They value stability more on professional models.
which the best canon r6 and nikon z6 camera. please help me, it's hard to choose
just getting ready to call it a night, ding, oh a full frame mirrorless comparison. hmmm.
The one thing the New Canon EOS R has that really intrigued me is that adapter that lets you put the filters in the adapter so you only need one filter size.
Nikon that was a surprise.
IBIS you think that would be standard now days.
Still enjoying seeing all the new stuff that comes out.
Cheers
what camera u are using for this video
What I come away with is man the GH5s image looks great!
What was this video shot on? That should tell me everything I want to know.
Great review as usual. I often agree with you guys’ conclusions. Just got the Z6 for video performance with the FTZ lens adapter.
I'm also considering z6. How good is the face-tracking Autofocus in 4k Video? Can u tell me please. I want to utilise Video Autofocus for focus pulling on as many shots as possible. I am an independent film maker with very limited budget and a not very skillful crew n cast.
Which camera did u use to capture this excllent video
Jordan's part is the highlight in this one
I would like to see what camera was used to shoot the episode in the description of the video, on youtube as TheCameraStore used to do.
We rant more and shoot less good photos with the best imaging technologies.
Hell yeah! So true. I keep watching these two doing bla bla bla but their work is mediocre.
@@SamLee74 please. they are camera reviewers. if u are not into camera reviews, please watch other videos. they review TECHS, that's their job not taking jobs and creating portfolios.
I have never heard them claim to be great photographers - the opposite in fact, they often bring on guests whose work they admire
Cris how does Z6 compare vs D750? Are photos ruffly the same with same lens,i know you got D750.
Julian.
How does the Nikon Z IBIS compare to the Olympus IBIS?
pentax>nikon>sony, olympus do not have full frame camera so it cant be campared with others.
Love the coverage you guys have been doing. It's an exciting year!
Hello. I am using D5500 with 18-140mm & prime 50 f1.8G and want to upgrade to mirror less. but confused with Nikon Z6 or Sony A7iii. I'm usually still Hobby photographer portraits, family, holidays pictures etc. Video is not my concern. I am only worried about Z6 face auto focus or general auto focus. Sony has eye auto focus which very handy but I have to buy all new gear if i shifted to Sony. on another hand Nikon has better EVF, better touchscreen & easy menu, better IBIS water proof body.
Please help to choose. Awaiting for your reply. Keep up the good work. Cheers
This is a very helpful comparison. Thanks :)
But its not activated when your afs lens has vr, so it doesn't work in conjunction but it's either or
I always see the difference when the episode is shot on the GH5s :) at low iso this camera is sooooo goooood :).
Thanks for review. I have question about battery life on z6 (photo and video), I see deferent numbers on internet “700 shots and 300 shots per charge”
Which one more realistic and closer to reality?
Dose Nikon z6 has overheating issue?
Thank you)
Grabbing popcorn for the comments section for this video.
I agree about the F4 - they do have a 24 - 70 f2.8 coming 2019 - hopefully first quarter.
How about Fuji XT3 i think it's worth to compare.
Good camera perhaps, but this comparison is about FF mirrorless ...
If the XT3 had better battery life, comparable auto focus and IBIS you could compare it...great crop sensor camera....
Great review...... I totally agree with 95% of what you said..... And I must say dpreview totally made a winning pick with you guys. They are now a more well rounded package.
It's been great working with them!
Used my friend Sony & the system is very confusing. I loved the eye focus but Z6 isn't far behind & also catching up now. But I find Z6 so easy to use, so I'm going for Z6. Although I would love Z6 to have more lenses asap. Thanks!
Ikr… i dont know why ppl act like they like sony so much haha i think they get paid by sony to say so
Great video once again guys . Most importantly though is the Calgary backdrop . Beautiful even in winter .
Nice touch with the SFX/Music thing going on every now and then, this channel is getting better and better!
Well said
There are just so many good cameras out there that you could seriously just blindfold yourself and pick one at random and be able to make great pictures.
