TL;DR: The A7C isn't worth it, and I had a horrible experience with mine. I just want to add my experience with the A7C (I use a camera for 50% photography and 50% videography (live streaming church services every Sunday)). I started out with the A6100, then started getting full-frame envy so I looked into the A7III and A7SIII. When I saw the A7C, I was in love! The specs were perfect for what I needed, and the live eye-tracking for video really appealed to me. I sold off my A6100, APS-C lenses, and all the accessories I'd collected for it. From day 1, the A7C gave me problems. During the first live-stream, I noticed severe auto-focusing problems. The camera would randomly start to focus-breath, and at times it would even lock onto the mic in front of the person speaking (and I triple confirmed that face/eye auto-focus was enabled). We're talking about a person standing still in front of a podium, maybe 10 feet away, so there's no excuse for poor auto-focus. Amazon gave me 30 days until I had to return it, and I kept it until day 29, desperately messing with settings, trying to diagnose the auto-focus issues. It just didn't make sense that an $800 camera was blowing a $1,800 camera out of the water. I ended up going with the A6400 instead, and last Sunday I was able to fully test it during a live-stream. All the sudden my auto-focusing issues were gone, and it was locking onto faces just like I expected it to. I also want to mention I took the A7C on a hike and even using it for still frame photography, I missed focus on at least 1/3 my shots while I was looking directly at someone's face (I should also mention I was using a native Sony lens for this and the live-streaming). Maybe I simply had a faulty camera, but for my money, after using both systems, having full-frame for an extra $1k just isn't worth it, especially when the actual photo and video capabilities of the A6400 are virtually identical. EDIT: One last thing. If you're like me and currently use one of the A6000 series cameras, but the siren call of full-frame is tempting you purely for the fact that it's full-frame and that's what "real" photographers use, don't buy into that crap! A pro with an APS-C camera will always beat an amateur with a full-frame. Your experience and glass are _so much more_ important than the size of your sensor! Arthur has shown that time and time again. Unless you have an actual, tangible reason for _requiring_ full-frame, save your money and buy some more lenses for your current camera.
Did you notice any difference on how the buttons click? I sold my A6600 for the A7c.. I just have it but I'm feeling a little bit of regret. Hopefully I'll get over it. This cam feels cheap, the plastic feels cheaper than the A6600 and, the buttons have very deep and soft clicks, instead of the A6600's more shallow and harder click. This makes me press way harder than I feel I should need to. I'm even wondering if I got a bad copy..
@@tomghzel Compared to the a6100, the A7C felt more “premium”, but compared to the a6400, my A7C felt about the same, if not a little cheaper regarding the buttons specifically. If you _truly_ need a full frame camera, just bite the bullet and go for the A7SIII. This is a “buy once, cry once” situation. Like in most areas of life, there are no short cuts regarding camera quality. You get what you pay for, and with the A7C you’re _paying_ less but _getting_ less in return.
@@alexrowland Hey, thanks for the answer! I don't totally agree, because the A7 III is an awesome cam, and costs less than the A7c! But in contrast to what the videomaker said, I did notice a big difference in autofocus between the A7 III and the A6600. A6600 was way better in getting and keeping autofocus. That's why I got the A6600 in the first place. I follow a lot of very good photographers that use the A7 III (not the s). I just need an affordable b-cam because I already bought the FX6 😭💸. I'll just cry a little and than sell the A7c when Sony releases the A7 IV.
i actually sold my a7iii just months ago and bought the a7c. I encountered 0 prolems, i use this cam mostly for work purposes 80% video all the time. For me it's a an upgrade from a7iii, the full flip screen is something i've bren eanting for a long time and yes it made tons of difference on how i shoot now and hoe flexible and dynamic i am noe compared to the a7iii where i used to be so stiff. But you do you
I love my a6000, a6500 and NEX-7. Im saving uo for the A7IV when it comes out hopefully in 2021. The A7-3 is the best bang for your buck. The A7C is a budget friendly to get more folks into Full Frame that are currently pnly in APSC land but yeah its not as nice and fleshed out as the normal A7xxx line
It's fantastic to see a guide comparing the Sony A7 series! These cameras have made such a mark in the world of photography. Each model in the A7 lineup brings something unique to the table, catering to different needs and preferences. Whether it's the classic A7 with its groundbreaking introduction to the full-frame mirrorless market, the A7II with its improved features, the A7III's balance of high-end capabilities, or the compact and travel-friendly A7C, there's something for every photography enthusiast. It's exciting to think about the creative possibilities each camera offers! 📸✨
After watching tones of RUclips, you are the best person able to explain and analyse different models and functions in an extremely simple and direct way. You are the Best of the best in such category. Wish you can do the same on other models. One video solved all my questions. Thank you so much.
I'm one of the people who used the a7ii for a while. I only this month upgraded to the a7c and am absolutely loving it. As a portrait shooter it's great having the articulating screen and continuous eye autofocus finally.
I do primarily portrait photography, I’m wanting to try a mirror less camera and move away from my mk3 how do you feel it does with lowlight portraits?
Although I love the idea of the A7C and was very close to buying one. The tiny EVF and weird ergonomics were deal breakers for me even though I’m just a hobby photographer. Hopefully a second generation addresses those issues.
I'm loving my jump from the A6000 to the A7ii and now A7C. The A7C has realtime eye autofocus in "VIDEO" where the others do not, it also has tracking to keep focus of an object when shooting video, this is a huge improvement for video shooters. I rarely ever have my sensor exposed, open camera bodies with the sensors pointing upwards stresses me out. I can see dust spots in this video, I'm curious as to why you wouldn't just have body caps on these cameras.
I’m in the same position, trying to move from my a6000 to the a7ii or iii. I mainly shoot pics of my son’s soccer matches around the country, the a6000 just wouldn’t get me the detailed clearness in my photos. Have you seen this improvement in the a7 series? Thanks bud
I use the original A7. Mostly for landscape, astro and occasional portrait shots. I find the auto focus to work 99% of the time even with a fast moving subject like my cat, AF performance really depends on the lens used. Blown up the image quality is outstanding with my prints of 30 inches x 20 inches, if you don't record video or make billboards then don't worry about getting anything other than the original A7.
IMO, the VF at the corner is actually a plus. If the VF is directly above the LCD, the nose can touch the screen and those with oily skin will have smudges on the LCD screen. By placing the VF at the corner, this is less of an issue.
Until recently I had the Sony A7ii and had quite a good time with it The lens I had on it 99% of the time was the Sigma 100/400mm. I then done an update to the Sony A7iii. I use the same lens and I am far more comfortable using the Sony A7iii. This camera is used in mostly manual mode and I have noticed that once I stopped moving my hands on taking images they improved real quick. And yes still that same lens. There was a transition period where I had to learn a few things and I am still learning some of them. Now this is down to me being a slow learner and not the camera in any way. I wish I had went straight for the Sony A7iii as to me it is the best camera out there and yes very bias in saying this. My thoughts on keeping the Sony A7ii lasted all of a day or so then it went on the market to be sold. I know I am far happier with my choice and if I do an upgrade it will be to the Sony A7riv. I enjoyed your report and is the only reason why I have commented.
Thank you for this video, especially when you describe the various types and their uses. For anyone looking at the confusing variations on the market, It was so helpful for me to decide which model was best for me, in the end I chose the A7 Il. Keep up the great videos.
Great summary. Personally I've been wanting to biy the A7iii for more than 2 years but since my photo project hasn't come up yet I'll go for the A7iv. Better viewfinder, menu, body ergonomics and probably video capabilities.
Based upon what you said in this video I think that the A7C is better than the A7III in three aspects and those are video (unlimited 4K recording without over heating), size (smaller and lighter), and simplicity (no mess on the main port side). The A7III is still very powerful and is able to record on more than one memory card at the same time. I think that Sony left the A7III as the only one with two memory card recording so that customers wouldn't be as unhappy when the A7C came out. I must admit that there's a part of me that wishes I had the A7C instead of the A7III. Thank you for making such informative videos. I'm likely going to watch your video on Full Frame vs APS-C next. 😃
If you want to shoot sports and other professional work definitely go with the a7iii. The dual card slots with save you. The a7 and a7ii are good backup cameras essentially for the price.
4:50 - yeah, it is slow, but it IS super reliable! Using mine since 2014 now, and it is still performing the same like always - switch it on and shoot! It NEVER had any "strange" behaviour or hiccup or anything at all! Always worked liked it used to.
As an experienced photographer with a huge gap in upgrade this is the most comprehensive and informative video that I really needed to decide with. Bravo! Thank you!! 👌🏾
I didn’t realise the 7ii was as old as that and they are still selling for 600 used . I think that’s expensive for any 9 years old camera , I thought I have made a decision but the more I research the more I’m confused and I have 20+ years in the trade . So must be even harder for newbie’s, unless money is no object, IBIS is crucial to me as I don’t want to lug around a tripod and I’m starting to get a bit shaky. As I get older
Great video - better than most, when it comes to explaining and comparing the Sony lineup! I'm interested in replacing my A7, so the differences you describe will be part of the decision. My only suggestion would be to discuss weights in greater detail, and how much of a difference that can make.
This is the most comprehensive video I have found. I am in the market for a Sony Camera and you’ve clarified everything perfectly!! Congrats on an awesome video!!
I upgraded from a7r2 to a7r3. At first I thought given both same resolution and all. But I was wrong, it wasn't much of an upgrade. A7r3 was a totally different beast, blazing fast focusing and real time AF makes the deal PLUS previously a7r2 on godox Xpro had like 0.5-1 secs lag, that mattered esp on movement. but a7r3 zero lag on remote flash, means I can easily HSS accurately. Didn't regret the upgrade
I have literally been binge watching all of your videos and they are by far the best videos on this kind of content on youtube. Your videos are very enlightening.
Do not sleep on the original A7. I bought it at launch and it's taken me through multiple assignments and actually feels like an artist's tool, even after comparing to much more expensive cameras from other brands. The 35/F2.8 lens is a godsend and is like a cheap Contax T3 (same lens but interchangeable).
Would be excellent if Sony released a roadmap up to see the direction they're taking each of the camera lines. To me I feel like the A7c is going to slide between the A7r/s and A6 lines as the entry level hybrid replacement to the A7 and the A6 line will start leaning more towards professional vlogging use. Sony shows so little interest towards APS-C sensor development but as a small and light weight cropped sensor body it's hard to ignore its practicality for streamers and vloggers.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The first 2 minutes were EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I've watched many many hours of video about Sony cameras, and no one has explained what you did there. #mindblown #grateful
Arthur, I just watched your video, and I have not looked at the comments, but I feel you are going to feel increasing pressure to go full frame, but I hope you can resist that. All things being equal, APS-C lenses will always be smaller although we might be dealing with a situation where the off brand manufacturers are not willing to make aps-c lenses, but THEY ARE MAKING THEM NOW! We have more options than ever! Right now I have some incredibly affordable high quality lenses in the Sigma Trinity. I also have great Rokinon 12 f/2 and 21 /f/1.4. I have Sony 18-104 f/4 and also the 24 1.8 and 50 1.8 even though I have those Sigmas.I am probably going to buy the Tamron 17-17 2,8 soon..
I have had my A77 for over a decade. I looked at the new Sony lineups frequently, but your initial storyboard really explained all the new models. Thanks so much! I still can't seem to justify making the leap to E mount lenses with all of my amazing Sony and Minolta A mount glass. :/
Kind of was in the same boat. Had an A77 since around launch, sold to gf and got a used a99 for the past 7 years. Decided it was finally time to leave the middle ages behind and jumped on 0 shutter count Amazon open box A7C for 1200$ (lucky!) but gf's A77 finally died so sold her the C and now have an SIII! Gotta say, the sheer jump in quality of life from cameras of that generation to modern justifies the cost of buying into a new system! If you live in a major metropolitan area, the sony used lens market is quite extensive and good deals pop up with enough patience.
Just to clarify, when you mention the A7C can record video an unlimited amount of time, you seem to say you still have to worry about your battery limit and memory card storage limit. In a studio setting you can avoid those limits. If you plug in the usb power connector and you are recording via the HDMI out you don't have either of these worries. You just put the camera in Movie mode, and then your HDMI output can be recorded. That is how most vloggers would do this in their studio.
Thank you for explaining the differences between the Sony lineups! Also, I'm really glad you pointed out the flaps of the A7iii. I love the A7iii but I am constantly trying my best not to break those flaps lol. They really couldn't have designed that bit better? :-/

@@HardDrumStep Thanks! I can only afford either the A6400 + Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or the A7 II + Sony FE 50mm f/1.8. The Sigma 30 is clearly the better lens but I won't have to waste anything when I go full-frame in a couple of years if I get the A7 II.
@@freakshooter820 Hey I'm from Nikon APS-C, too! The Nikon D7100 was release in the same year as the A7 II, but as a matter of fact, full-frame cameras always have better high ISO performance than APS-C ones, especially those released in the same year. And the D7100 is not even Nikon's APS-C flagship (I believe at that time it's the D300S).
@@trunghoadang3710 Yeah I know, but that's why I believe the a7ii to be worth it over the a6400, bc it's full frame. But that depends on what you shoot. They're very cheap and works great with Sonys focus magnifier and focus peaking, and many are still as sharp as modern lenses

Just two minutes in and already worth it! I never understood really well how Sony classifies their cameras until, now. Great comparison video! Thanks.
Been watching a lot of these breakdowns the past couple weeks, and this is by far the best video I’ve seen.
Good job, I was confused on the Sony camera product lines and your initial explanation was well done! Have always shot with a Canon and I am not a professional shooter.
Unlike many other you tube bloggers you started with a simple explanation and it was helpful.
Love the idea of the A7C but for professional use, I believe the dual card slot is most important of the A7iii
Your content for sony cameras is amazing, you're the one who got me to get my first camera, a sony a6000 I love it so much
did you bought it this year? i’m planning about getting one but idk, does it feels outdated? does it feel plastic-y?
Thanks to him I got myself the a6100
@@andresyamkovoy9651 i had the a6000 for a couple of years now, it does not disappoint. Even tho the body is made from a durable plastic its still a great camera if you pair it with a good lens. For mine ive 3d printed grips just to get a refresh on how the camera feels in the hand
@@melonswag420 thanks! ive been considering getting my first digital camera to transition from smartphone photography and analog (it’s getting unnecessarily expensive) and i’m on a tight budget lol
@@andresyamkovoy9651 you can strike deals on ebay to get the a6000 for like 300usd with a kit lens. So pay attention to those, or check facebook marketplace for locals selling it
TL;DR: The A7C isn't worth it, and I had a horrible experience with mine.
Thanks for explaining the differences between all the Sony cameras, especially the A7 1,2,3 and C. Most likely will be looking at the A7III.
This guy is extremely informative without the air of condescension. Truly useful timeless service knowledge. Thank you
The Best Guide for Sony Alpha Cameras!!!!!!!!!!!
If I started now I would go with the a7c. Compactness makes photography more fun.
Although I love the idea of the A7C and was very close to buying one. The tiny EVF and weird ergonomics were deal breakers for me even though I’m just a hobby photographer. Hopefully a second generation addresses those issues.
With their new g compact lenses, yes. But with no aperture ring lens? A7c compactness is pretty much for S mode only
Consering the dimension of ff lenses... i don't think so... even if I imagine the a7c paired with my zeiss 35mm f2.8...
The C is a joy to use. Sold mine to my gf and bought the S3. God its such a chonker. Big sad
I routinely clean my sensors, and I dont worry about them being exposed.
@@ArthurR Have a video showing how to clean a sensor please :-)
And also gyro data, probably the best stabilization ever
@everyday tenor low light performance isn't as good as the A7III but unless you go over ISO 3200 you aren't going to see a difference at all 👍
Man! you are saving lives with this explanation. Thanks so much!
This will be a popular video. 😃
Dude! U just gave the best explanation of the Sony lineups!
Liked that you mentioned price of cameras on used market. Thank you.
IMO, the VF at the corner is actually a plus. If the VF is directly above the LCD, the nose can touch the screen and those with oily skin will have smudges on the LCD screen. By placing the VF at the corner, this is less of an issue.
The amount of easiness in following and understanding what you say is amazing.
Thanks for the info on Sony camera's and lenses Arthur. Your videos have been a great help over time when deciding on bodies and lenses.
Same bro. But I'm concerned about the money about a7iv
@@xeyutipe too expensive still I agree
I was using sony A7 and after 1 year I upgraded and downgraded at the same time to A6400. And it worth it.
Moving over to Sony! Debating between the a7iii or the a7riv. So far the a7iii seems like the way to go
The R IV would be overkill
If you don't do professional photography then A7iii is the choice.
A7iii is a good hybrid camera, A7iv is mainly for photography
If you want to shoot sports and other professional work definitely go with the a7iii. The dual card slots with save you.
The a7 and a7ii are good backup cameras essentially for the price.
Which one of these would you say is equal to or maybe a bit better than the Nikon Z6II, both photo and video features considered?
4:50 - yeah, it is slow, but it IS super reliable! Using mine since 2014 now, and it is still performing the same like always - switch it on and shoot! It NEVER had any "strange" behaviour or hiccup or anything at all! Always worked liked it used to.
As an experienced photographer with a huge gap in upgrade this is the most comprehensive and informative video that I really needed to decide with. Bravo! Thank you!! 👌🏾
2 minutes in and this video has explained more than any Google search I’ve done 👍
I appreciate your simple and informative style without all the music and Broll.
Great video - better than most, when it comes to explaining and comparing the Sony lineup!
I'm interested in replacing my A7, so the differences you describe will be part of the decision. My only suggestion would be to discuss weights in greater detail, and how much of a difference that can make.
Your chart at the beginning of the video is incredibly helpful! Thank you!
just picked up a a7 iii with kit lens for $600
went out and bought a sony 85mm 1.8 for $300
Honestly cant wait till I go out to test the camera
Just bought a Brand new A7 II last week for 500$. Still such a great camera in 2022!
This is the most comprehensive video I have found. I am in the market for a Sony Camera and you’ve clarified everything perfectly!! Congrats on an awesome video!!
I’m in FULL agreement with DeCarlo C. as far as the s, r and c letter designation. THANK YOU!!!
Dont know if you are in the teaching business but you explain stuff extremely well. subbed
They will never do that. Because that would cause people to hold out for the next model thus causing lost sales for Sony.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The first 2 minutes were EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I've watched many many hours of video about Sony cameras, and no one has explained what you did there. #mindblown #grateful
this is the best video I have seen about comparison of sony A7 series!
Great video! I'm torn between the a7iii and the a7c. Currently using the a6100.
Your explanation was clarified so good it cleared my confusion on which Sony A7 Series' Camera I should buy
Thank you for explaining the differences between the Sony lineups! Also, I'm really glad you pointed out the flaps of the A7iii. I love the A7iii but I am constantly trying my best not to break those flaps lol. They really couldn't have designed that bit better? :-/

Thank you so much, just about to pick up the A7 II as my first Sony camera but now I guess I'll get the A6400 instead.
I have the a7II and I'm not that impressed. The only good thing is the full frame, but if you don't get a good lens to utilize that, I would prefer the a6400 imo..
@@HardDrumStep really? I got one recently and the only flaw I find is the single SD-slot and the short battery life. Other than that I find the low light performance to be amazing compared to my previous Nikon D7100 (APS-C)
You mentioned that you only have money for one lens for either camera? Take a look at using vintage lenses with adapters. They're very cheap and works great with Sonys focus magnifier and focus peaking, and many are still as sharp as modern lenses
Thank you for the explanation ive known about this cameras for about 3 years now and im finally buying one but i was not aware of the differences and purposes
One of the most informative videos on Sony on youtube. My personal opinion is that with the A7c, Sony is trying to lure the users of Nikon and Canon, which explains the altered ergonomics, and yes a lot of Nikon users like me have their eyes trained on the A7c. The size is lucative. After a days shoot with my Nikon D750, only I know how tired it makes me feel. Thanks for the video.
