18 minutes of watching, and I learned so much already. Simple, logical, and with showing the real difference. Now I realize what is Bulb mode, what is difference between low and high F's, and a lot more.Thank you a lot, you have a great diction and totally realize what to talk about. And look solid, also, its way interesting to watch :D
Foster Kerrison I despise Sony manuals. They are a labyrinth of information with lots of dark corners. And they don't even call the camera, "camera". It's the "product", not the camera.
I couldn't agree with you more! I'm ashamed.... but I've had my camera for more than a year and I found the settings so daunting I packed it away. Thank you Tony, I now have a better grip on the settings :)
One of the best tutorials I've ever watched! So well explained. Going to buy your How to Create Stunning Digital Photography book to watch more videos and learn more from you, thanks!
Hey Tony! I was looking for a training video about the A7II, I'm just at the beginning of the video but I was glad to see your face turn up on top of my search results , quality is always there!
This is extremely helpful! Just bought an A7ii and watched this video 7 years ago still amazing. Have been shooting for here and there for a few years but I learned so much from this video. It's bring a lot value although I was working for a photography education studio (as an marketer) for a year. Good vid very helpful. Thanks!
I agree with all the positive comments, thank you so much this is a great tutorial, I’ve learned more in the first 20 minutes than I have in the last five years owning the camera
I really like Tony’s teachings. I recently purchased a Sony alpha 7 o’clock to a couple years ago when it first came out. What I like about his teachings on the camera is he makes it very simple and he’s also easy to follow. He also seems like he’s a guy that really cares about about people. He is a phenomenal teacher and I will subscribe to his teachings on this camera. I am dyslexic and even with his teachings I can follow him very easily. Thanks Tony
..receiving my a7 ii today, decided to buy instead of a7r ii for money and kit lens...when a7r iii is released i will upgrade. Tony, as usual you have done a masterful job, my only wish is that you guys reviewed all of my hobbies !!! so if you could develop a love for motorcycling, boating, food, parenting and woodworking it would be helpful. thanks for what you do!!!
Tony, just wanted to give a huge "thank you" for this video. I'm borrowing a friend's a7 and this is the first legit camera I've ever touched. The lens on the camera is an adapted Nikon 35mm f/2D, so not all of Sony's functionality is available. Even still, this video has helped me a TON to figure out some of the basics of photography. I'm trying to decide between an a6500 and something like an 80D or T6i, so hands-on experience is great, and you're helping me not waste my time with the camera.
I recently bought my first full frame and instead of going with a Nikon or Canon, I purchased a Sony Aii and I felt overwhelmed to learn how to use it. I have watched so many videos and got more frustrated because I did not feel like I was understanding how to get the best use out of my new camera. Today, everything got a lot more clearer for me as I watched your video. Thank you so much!!!!!!
All I needed from this video was how to turn off that annoying beep. But watching how well this video was made in definitely watching other vids. Awesome, simple, informative
I've been watching your video tutorials for a few years now and they are Spot On! I have the A7Rii and I've been trying to get it to do Phase Detection focus points. Well you just solved why I can't find the feature. The A7Rii is not equipped with it. Only the A7ii and other models. Thank You Tony Northrup!
I just got a new Sony a7. You explain this camera in simple terms so the complex becomes understandable. In fact I plan to purchase your book(s) so I can be a much better photographer. Thank you so much. Your tutorials are amazing indeed!!
I am a fairly new photographer and just picked up an a7R II. This was an amazing video, one of the best I’ve ever watched. Thanks so much for putting this together. The explanations and demonstrations were excellent and I just went over to buy your book on Amazon!
Thanks Tony, you always explain things so clearly, it's such a valuable skill to have! The A7 mk1 has come down in price so much now I couldn't ignore it any longer. Thanks to your video I feel well prepared to tackle their notorious menu system. Cheers!
Just taken the plunge and purchased a second hand Sony A7ii (body only). Migrating from micro four thirds. As funds stretched, will start by adapting my collection of vintage lenses until I can afford new Sony FE lens. Useful information for me in your tutorial, thank you so much.
Best camera tuturial ever. Full of useful information conveyed articulately and with with humour, I watched it right through, Something I rarely do. Thanks Tony :)
found this extremely useful! just got my sony a7ii yesterday and watched this video the day before and almost instantly knew what to do! A good friendly voice with a bit of humor goes a long way, thanks! :)
I’ve been eying this vid for about a year now wanting to watch it bc it’s so long but I finally did it and it was well worth it. Now I know everything about my camera
Thank you so much! Your delivery of information is so clean and on point. I appreciate being able to jump around in the video and I will be back many times to this tutorial I'm sure. :)
I was terrified by the length of this video but honestly this video was so informative and clear it was a blast learning. Thank you so much for the break down your great at what you do.
Hi T, sincerely, thank you and Chelsea. I've learned so much, from my first full frame (6d) to my present one (a7rii). When I started I followed your advice to invest in lenses, I wound up buying Canon 24-70 & 70-200 L's and now I own those plus a couple primes (a zeiss f4 16-35, and Canon 50 1.8). I've thoroughly enjoyed all. And on that note, and on the off chance someone is still reading this, T&C do a great job reminding folks to have fun within their means. All is much appreciated. After watching y'all for a year I've finally purchased your books this morning, will review after I've read. Have a good'n👍
Thank you so much. After searching on RUclips for days to find a video that shows me how to use my A7rii I came across your video. Amazing job thanks for helping people like me. 🙏🏻
I'm looking to upgrade to a mirrorless camera and am thinking of making the switch from Canon to Sony...this video was really helpful to me. Thank you!
I can honestly state that you are the guy who taught me how to take good photos! Your books that I have are fantastic! Thank you so much for your work Tony!
Great video, Thanks! My local camera shop would thank you if they knew I watched it! I've been running back and forth to the store with ALL my questions - they are most likely tired of me. YOUR video answered so many questions and now when I've forgotten something, all I have to do is review your video! Thank you!
What is not to like about this tutorial? Excellent! Thank you sooo much, Tony! Many long standing mysteries were either solved or clarified, and not for just this particular Sony model. Many of these menu items and concepts actually cross over into the later "A" mount camera menus, like my old A-77II. Very well done! I will be watching it several more times, until I know it all by heart! PS - for many years I did not know "ISO" was actually a word, not an acronym. Not only does it make someone who knows it "Look: a lot smarter. And it is a great piece of trivia as well! Thank you so much again!
I have just graduated to my first full frame camera, the A7 ii, from traditional Panasonic Superzooms, which are good. I took it out of the box and was totally bewildered at all of the controls on the A7 ii. Finding your video has been fantastic, because it helped me find the shooting modes and settings, that I usually used on my Panasonic. One problem, this A7, just while following you on the video, my battery drain has been significant. I normally with the Panasonic can get at least 350 photos. I figured out how to cut off the monitor on the A7 (I've always preferred the viewfinder only), and the cut off the auto pre-focus. What other setting can I cut off, that is absolutely not necessary for most of the photos I would take. NOTE: I do outdoor landscaping and skylines 90% of the time. Also note that you say you primarily use the top focus area. I was always taught to use the center weighted focus (the 3rd one down). Advantages or disadvantages?
Hey, I recently bought the Sony Alpha A7 and a 16mm F2.8 lens to go with it. I watched this video the whole way through with my camera in front of me and really appreciate all the advice and wisdom you put out to help photographers become accustomed to new kit!
I really appreciate this video. Fact that its broken up with the index, you're realistic take on everything, the occasional jokes. I love it! I'm new to digital but familiar with film so the settings and menus are the least appealing part of going digital and this video simplifies things a ton and gets the basics worked out as well as some more advanced stuff. Thank you!
Thank you so much Tony. This by far is the best A7RII tutorial I have found. I am coming from Canon and am struggeling a bit to get my head around all the controls of the Sony camera. Well done!
terrific tutorial. just got the a7rii and this review is the best i've found. So inspiring actually that I've turned off my sound, purchased a copy of both your books and the neewer stimer. Youre the man tony, thanks for your time and effort.
Just bought the a7 mk2 and have been experimenting with it over the past few days. This has been a really clear, helpful and well made video for someone new to taking digital photography seriously like myself. Learning back button focus was a revelation, looking forward to playing with it. Will definitely check out the books as well! Thank you.
+Tony Northrup I have to be honest. Between AF Lock and Eye AF , I'm finding myself using backbutton focus far less often then on my Canon. Still very useful but maybe less so than prior IMO. @tombeynon Definitely bookmark this as its far handier than the manual, I did it with the A6000 video and it saved me alot of time.
Tony, I just bought my first mirrorless alpha 7 and this video saved me a lot of time to understand the why’s and put the initial configuration. Plus I learned the way to go with future lens purchases. Thank you a lot. I did like, subscribed and will buy your book. Great work, thanks again.
Hi Tony, Thanks a lot for this immensely helpful video. Just bought my A7M2 a week ago & after seeing this video, it makes it much easier to use this beautiful camera. Thanks again & keep posting.......
Awesome tutorial! Me and my sister cooperated and got the new Sony a7R-II (and those exact lens Zeiss 1.8/55mm), and she's the experienced one (though not with Sony's cameras), while I'm complete newbie. So this video was GREAT help!
Outstanding series!!! Thanks!!! One note: The only issue I personally have with keeping it on Continuous Shooting mode. Is that the shutter does have a finite amount of cycles before it fails.
Tony, thank you for your superb, objective and clear videos!! I'm among one of tens of thousands of followers. And thank you for publishing those awesome books as well. Your choice of words and pacing of speech is how others should use as benchmark.
Nice job putting out a concise and well thought out a7ii tutorial. Its mid February 2021 and the price of this camera body w zoom lens and other junk has dropped to under a grand. Im not sure how much longer Sony will sell this ageing model. However, buying a well made, full frame body with a decent auto/anti-vibration zoom lens, for this price, is amazing. Not to mention having the ability to use older, cheap 35mm film lenses. (From any manufacturer) Well... it's just a crazy good deal! I'm sure your going to get a lot of additional views on this video and you should. Great Job!!!
I've just upgraded from a Panasonic G5 to a Sony A7 as I feel it's time to step up to a full frame sensor. I'm a Kinaesthetic/Visual learner and find manuals to be a massive chore to read so this tutorial was perfect to fill in the gaps of bits I hadn't figured out for myself. I'll definitely be purchasing SDP now ;)
Thanks a lot Tony! Just got a second hand Sony A7ii and these tips and tricks are very useful for getting familiar with this piece of technique. Now time for practising, shooting, and having fun with it!
Wow! what an incredibly well put together video. every part of it was fantastic, I especially appreciate you breaking down the video in the description! definitely will be hanging out in my favorites
Brilliant Tony! You are an exceptional teacher. I have both SDP and LRM 5. I use them both as my #1 reference. This particular video addresses several areas I needed help with. Thank you very much for helping create better pictures.
Wow. This is a great video. I watched it during my lunch hour. I just bought the a7ii and was having second thoughts but after watching what you posted here I feel I have seen an improvement in my photography already.,
Oh my goodness, this was great! I just took a 3-day class and I could have watched this video. Upside, I made great friends in class! Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much for the long video about the Sony A 7 . I learned so much from it. I bought the A 7 with kit lens because it was on offer and my M9 is away for repair and I wanted a full frame camera to use the Leica lenses. I am having great fun with the new camera; it is so versatile. Before your video I was baffled by the alternate options offered, but now am beginning to understand them. It is much more difficult to use than the M9 and I miss the DNG raw files of the Leica
Cheers Tony a brilliant video. I have progressed steadily from and Minolta dynax 7d through most of the Alpha family to up grading from the Alpha 77mk2 to the alph 7 mk2 a couple of weeks ago due to complicated focusing of the 77 's focusing. I love the simplicity of the A7 mk2 and the focusing modes / choices and any focusing hang ups where very nicely explained away. I now have to sort out the manual focusing techniques and i'm sorted as i have t heritage lenses (one sony dt lens and an old minolta zoom ( bought the relevant A 2 E mount converter so can use the lenses) and a kit lens, so your advice and explantation is gold dust to me. The important thing to me is this, I am nearly 60 and have midish learning difficulties and British so terminology could have been a problem but your explanations where spot on and proved very very easy to follow, congrats sir i don't say that lightly, i have now subscribed to your channel

I didn't see the 24-70 f/2.8 gm mentioned. Is that because of the size and price?
24-70 is the kit lens with sony a7 III.Thank you so much. You make amazing videos.
Everything except the lens I already have :(
Where is the video tutorial mentioned for the Sony A7sII?
Can you reply with a link?
This was a million times more informative than Sony's manual! Thanks so much!
Foster Kerrison I despise Sony manuals. They are a labyrinth of information with lots of dark corners. And they don't even call the camera, "camera". It's the "product", not the camera.

This was very helpful introduction for a beginner A7RII photographer thank you!
This was so helpful for someone new to this camera who felt a bit lost!
Brilliant Tony! You are an exceptional teacher. I have both SDP and LRM 5. I use them both as my #1 reference. This particular video addresses several areas I needed help with. Thank you very much for helping create better pictures.
itsgoode2bking Glad I could help!
New to the Sony family and I'm super thankful for this! Thank you!
Awesome tips that I would never have gotten if I just read the manual!!! Thank you so much!!!
Interested in an a7ii.
I'll be using this to streamline my understanding.
Thank you for all your photography demystifying and mythbusting.
The important thing to me is this, I am nearly 60 and have midish learning difficulties and British so terminology could have been a problem but your explanations where spot on and proved very very easy to follow, congrats sir i don't say that lightly, i have now subscribed to your channel
excellent .. it is so worth it watching despite of an hour video :) cleared some of my confusion on my camera thanks alot!!
You go to a lot of trouble over this, thank you Tony and Chelsea Northrup.
Thank you again for making this Tutorial. It is very clear and easy to find what I am looking for. I keep it handy for further reference.
Glad it was helpful!
My go to when I want to review any and all of my cameras abilities!!
A fantastic tutorial! So easy to watch. You feel like you are in good hands.
