      @@jamiesondean So at 14:56 into the video, the comment is made that the Sony is head and shoulders above the Nikon Z6. It's doesn't say for stills. It seems like a blanket statement. As the Z6 is considered more video centric, I feel such a broad statement maybe misleading. Clearly at this point, for video at least, the Sony is at a decided disadvantage compared to the newer Nikon Z6.

      The Nikon has actually already proven to be the better video camera of the 3.
      Also, Sony’s Eye AF wasn’t very good if the subject wasn’t looking at you. It almost never locked on the subject even though it would occasionally tell you it focused on the eye.
      Honestly, I hated the Sony A7 III and sent that thing back within 2 weeks because it was not the dream machine many of these guys claimed it was.

      Jamieson Dean I kinda agree with Red Bat Racing. If you’re posting a review and then comparing it to other cameras you have to base it on real world experience and not simply what you read in the specs. You can’t say battery life is not as good without testing it. The tests I have seen with the Z7 make it seem almost identical to similarly specced mirrorless cameras.

    • @jamiesondean
      @jamiesondean 5 лет назад +5

      @@mondotv4216 the problem is this; we never called it a review. We called it a hands-on first impressions video. We also had only two days with the camera and that wasn't enough time to make a confident assessment, so we mentioned the specs and said that you will likely get more than that. Now that we have had time to get a real world idea of battery life, I can confidently say that the Z6 is still behind the other two. We've been seeing about 900 shots per charge. Close to the Canon, but not anywhere near the Sony where we usually get over 1500 shots per charge

    This review is using the Nikon Z6 as a point and shoot camera. The Z6 has a lot of Autofocus settings that can configure the camera based upon the situation for optimum result. People using these cameras do not just sit back and let the camera do everything for them. So apparently these reviewers do not understand much about this camera and are making a superficial comparison. Having said that, the demonstration was entertaining.

  • @RobertNuttmann
    @RobertNuttmann 5 лет назад +4

    Did you talk about image quality and color rendition in your video and I missed it? To me the most important aspect of a camera is it's output qualities. Up until recently I was using a Nikon D750 with a 24-120 f4 and a 50mm f1.4. Five weeks ago I sold it and bought a Sony A7iii with 55mm f1.8 Sony Zeiss and I bought the LA EA4 adaptor and also use several very good Sony Minolta lenses I have been using with two film cameras.
    I have had a couple of Nikon DSLR cameras and from what I have so far taken on the Sony the color rendition is significantly different than Nikon. Some aspects of this are OK and some not. I have taken lots of shots of my garden roses as I have shot them with many different cameras and films and have samples of the results. The Sony does a good job with flower bright colors. Much of the time the Jpegs are fine and you don't have to go with raw. The Sony for me works better in mid day full sun shots, but to do this it turns the image bluer. And for some reason the shots in the Sony do not seem to change much using or not using a polarizing filter. My point for bringing this up is that the color rendition I am getting varies a lot from the two Nikon DSLRs I have been using. Anyone buying the Sony should be aware of this and should audition the color.
    The Sony Menu system is abysmal compared to Nikon. The Nikon touch screen system and using their menu is great. Sony does have lots of buttons you can program but then you have to remember what you programed where. I have only tested the Nikon Z7 in a Nikon promotion at a local camera shop, but I would say the Nikon EVF is way superior to the Sony.
    I shoot 98% stills on this camera. If I had it to do over again I would keep my D750. The only significant advantage of the Sony A7iii over the D750 in my humble opinion is that you can see the histogram in the EVF before shooting the photo. This saves chimping and bracketing. I don't bother to bracket any more. I like the Nikon F mount line up of lenses far better than the Sony emount line up. You can buy a brand new D750 with 24-120 from Nikon USA today for $1,900. The Sony A7iii with 24-105 would cost you $3,300. The 750 is a better value for stills. Not video though. Sony far far easier to use for video. The image quality between the two is about the same. To me the newer Sony is not any better.

    • @RobertNuttmann
      @RobertNuttmann 5 лет назад

      My own personal experience is that my Apple iPhones have the most accurate color using either the native camera app or the Adobe CC camera app. And next would be either my Nikon D5500 or D750. After that was my little Sony HX 80 and then the Sony A7iii. I have also used many different film stocks. Fuji Superia 200 or 400 have very accurate color. So does the beautiful new Kodak Ektacrhome. But accurate color does not mean it is the color you want. My experience is that Lightroom CC Classic plays nicer with Nikon files than Sony A7iii files. When I say "Nikon" files I mean from the cameras I have used 5500 and 750).
      But I also have an issue getting mid day full sun Nikon files to look good. The Sony A7iii does a better job with that except when you are around a lot of water the Sony system adds a ton of blue. And where the Nikon cameras files are greatly affected by adding a polarizing filter you almost cannot tell the difference in the raw or jpeg files from the Sony. But there is the issue when you are around water.
      I find being able to see the histogram before taking the shot a huge benefit. I am sure that is why mid day full sun shots are easier on the A7iii compared to the Nikon DSLRs. I look at the zebras and histo before pushing the button. Part of the Sony going to blue in sea shots has to do with the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. Must be the coatings. When I use adapted glass like the Sigma or Minolta daytime shots are not as blue near the sea or as controlled in general.
      But of course all this complication adds to make you continue to lear to use your gear. @@raminolta

      Paul, I am done with new gear for a while. At the last minute I bought the Sony A7iii over a Z7 because I have had very good luck with Sony compact cameras over the last 15 years and I have 5 very good Sony-Minolta lenses. I went to the A7 and not R because I figured if I did not like it the cost to change would not be so high. My biggest issue with the Sony A7iii is that controls hard to use when shooting. Plus for some reason when you get the Sony near large bodies of water like the Ocean or San Diego harbor it just seems to swing the color balance to blue. My Nikons and compact Sony do not do this. It is very hard to get the color balance right in Lightroom when this happens and you have to do it on each file. A PIA. @@paulmorrall5719

      I have had a Sony A7iii for five weeks. Have not used eye auto focus once. But I will this weekend. I had a D750 before the A7iii. To me the controls of the D750 are much better than the A7iii. 750 front and back control dials very easy to use while shooting. For my hands the A7iii control dials very hard to use when shooting. I find mid day full shun shots much easy on the Sony because of EVF. So far I think I have not used eye AF just because I have not needed to. The Sony standard focus us very good and I have not thought to push the eye focus button.

      @@RobertNuttmann i feel the body of Z6 better that others, it looks as DSLR but Sony lens and autofocus wins the war. The autofocus of A7III is more accurate and decisive. Sony offers also better wide lens as 16-35mm and other portrait lens as the 135mm 1.8, and the others Zeiss lens also. I look the test in laboratory and the quality of Sony prime is very high. It's a proven fact now that the A7-III and Nikon Z6 use the exact same Sony IMX410 image sensor so the raw output should be identical. (Thank you TechInsights X-ray machine and electron microscopes!) Jpg processing could be different. As for the Sony XQD card socket? This might have been a condition placed by Sony on the Nikon/Sony sensor contract of sale. Lumix S1?....will it also have the same IMX410? Who knows? We do know it also has an Sony XQD card socket. I'm not sure, maybe I'm just a noob... but a sensor measures, and delivers raw (little letters) data output, that goes through an algoritm, resulting in RAW data (capital). I don't think Nikon and Sony are also using the same processing chips?

    • @clifftotten7609
      @clifftotten7609 5 лет назад

      @@Yourtaer - Raw sensor data is not an "image" in any way shape or form. It literally has no "color" in it. It is a set of photosite voltage readings that are pre-amped and analog to digital converted to a "0db" state. They are just three GREY channels of voltage sets with metadata about the location they were collected and what RGGB filter they sat under. Again, raw sensor data is NOT an image. Is flour, coco, butter and sugar sitting on my counter top a chocolate cake? NO! They all need to be BAKED into a cake. Until then, those ingredients are NOT a cake...in any way shape of form...at all. Way to many people believe that raw sensor data is simply an uncompressed image file...and that is 100% completely wrong.

    A few comments on video from a Sony shooter (I use an a6500 professionally for both stills and video, and have an a6000 and an a5100 as my B and C cameras). Please look at the highlight rolloff from the a7 III starting at the 12:25 mark of the video. Look at how horrible the highlights on the face and the near column on the building look; super saturated and clipped. Look at the complete lack of detail in the sky. This is something that most all of the Gamma curves in Sony cameras have (SLOG is an exception as you get a much smoother highlight rolloff in slot). Compare this to the Nikon and Canon highlights. Yes, the Nikon footage is probably more overexposed on the face than the a7 III footage, but notice how well the Nikon (and Canon) handle the transition from correct exposure to overexposure when compared to the a7 III. While the sensor of the a7 III has the ABILITY to deliver dynamic range as high as that of, say, the Z6, the 100Mbs Codec of the a7 III is just not capable of utilizing all that DR, unless you go into slog and that opens up a whole new can of problems. Anyway, thanks for the review. I think that from the samples I have seen online (and from previously comparing my D750 with my Sony cameras), the majority of people would do better for video with a Z6 and the Flat picture profile recording internally than they would with the a7 III and any of the Gammas other than SLOG 2. And if you want to use SLOG 2 regularly on the a7 III, most people would want an external recorder, and at that point, you would benefit more from the 10-bit N-Log of the Z6 anyway. Again, I am a Sony shooter and an un-official Sony Fan Boi, but Sony has to get their act together with their codecs because the dynamic range, highlight rolloff and colors of both the Z6 and the EOS R cameras are so much better when using the default profiles.

    • @makepaladinsmehagain8493
      @makepaladinsmehagain8493 5 лет назад

      One other thought: Possibly when Sony comes out with their new APS-C camera (a6700 or the a7000 or whatever it will be called), they might finally include 10-bit video codecs that are competitive with what Panasonic or the new X-T3 offers. This potential improvement is basically the main thing stopping me from switching from Sony back to Nikon.

      @makepaladinsmehagain8493 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I think that it does show that - out of the box - there are some pretty obvious differences in DR and highlight rolloff when using the default picture profiles. And just going by my experience with Sony cameras (and asking other people who have lots of video experience with the a7 III), it is more difficult to avoid that clipping / nasty highlight rolloff. Hopefully sony gets this straightened out sooner rather than later.

The single slot and poor battery life plus less than stellar stills AF are things I can't buy into as I make living out of my camera. Once you do all that stuff at the beginning, you'll probably never have to dive into the full menu again. Another thing that helped me was to attach a base plate (I found a cheaper Chinese knockoff of the RRS one) that adds another centimeter to the body, and that makes the grip perfect for me. No more pinky sticking out the bottom with no place to rest. And it makes it very quick and easy to attach to a tripod.

      Sony cameras have five memory slots so you can save your settings. But don't format your memory card because that will erase three memory settings (which are saved to the memory card instead of the camera's internal memory). There are ways to quickly remove lots of images / videos without formatting your card. However if you regularly use more than one memory card, it might be difficult because you will have to save memory #3, 4, and 5 to multiple cards.

      I cant put de photo of the dial here, dont know how, but its has the next options: P(i dont rememrber), A(Aperture priority), S(Shutter priority), M(Manual), Auto, 1(you chose and save all yor settings),2(second customizable mode) ,Movie, SandQ mode(Slow motion mode).
      Well, i did the test, if you are in manual mode, and you are shooting stills and you push rec, the camera will start to record with the same parameters as you was taking photos, and if you change parameters while your are recording and stop to record, camera will bring those settings(diaphragm), but as i said before, you only need turn the dial to 1 to 2 profile or even use movie mode olny for movies, and 1 and 2 profiles for specific settings on stills, or even 1 for video 4k and 2 for video 35mm crop, you have so many options on this camera!
      Sorry for my bad english!!!!

      We just listed the CIPA ratings on the specs. Of course you'll get more than the CIPA ratings, but we hadn't had enough time with only two days to confidently say what the usual range of shots will be per charge. In any event, we have by now been able to get a better idea, and I can confirm that the Nikon is still quite a way behind the Sony on shots per charge. We're getting close to 900 on the Nikon, well over 1000 on the Canon, and usually more than 1500 on the Sony. Again, still a bit early to confidently say, but that's where we're at so far.

      Well, since this is only a first impressions video, and we had only had two days to fully use the camera, we would need more time to gather a complete idea of how many shots we typically get per charge. Likely we will say in the full review later.

      @@jamiesondean That's irresponsible though to just throw it out as if the CIPA rating is gospel while comparing it to the actual numbers from the other brand. It would seem like you're just using those numbers to paint a bad image of the Nikon. And it says so in the title: "Nikon Z6 Hands-On vs Sony A7III vs Canon EOS R". Well, we did test and talk about how the AF compared between all three systems, as well as showing the subject tracking, face and eye AF effectiveness, and the speed. We talked about the introduced noises when using Nikor FE lenses, which nobody else yet has mentioned anywhere. We gave our impressions on the feel of the body with respect to to other two. We gave an example of the video af tracking bet\ween all three... I'm not sure that all qualifies as a "spec readout" by three people who don't even know about the camera, but you're entitled to your opinion. I'm hoping you could give us some creative input on what to improve on our next video? I mean, we did already have one person talk about the AF, then one person talk about the ergo, and another person talk about the specs highlights... which is basically your only suggestion so far.
