Who else has made these mistakes at some point? I know I have haha
Matti Haapoja I make it all the time . Then end up editing and throwing it away lol . Shooting more is the key. Thanks .
Matti Haapoja many times!!!!
Matti Haapoja guilty!🙌😂
Always Love watching your videos! Love From Nepal!
I haven't made ANY of them. coz i simply haven't made any videos yet :(
1:14 NOT SHOOTING ENOUGH
2:30 DONT GET CREATIVE ENOUGH
3:27 INCONSISTENT DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT
4:44 NO SEQUENCE
5:40 FOCUS ENOUGH B ROLL
Thanks me Later👍
Tanks bro right now.
@@YAHYAKHAN_ you're welcome bro
Saved my life.... Thanks....
@@siham7010 you are Welcome bro
I love hearing to him.
3:36 The direction of moving across the screen also mimics how we read books. In the Western world left to right movement can infer a positive feeling, whereas moving right to left can infer a negative one. The same goes for the subject moving down or up within the scene. Moving down is in sync with gravity which feels easy, whereas moving up is fighting gravity which appears difficult. The consistency of movement applies to the camera movement too in a sequence of shots, keeping the same direction flows from one shot to the next but if you were to change it then it would break the mood.
Thanks for the advice Andy. I'll be sure to keep this in mind for my videos
To be honest, we don't need any more footage of people walking into coffee shops. LOL
true
Agreed 🤣
THIS.
Trueee
Haha 🤣
Matti, your videos have been an important resource for me as I build my channel and work to improve the quality of my videos. Thanks for all that you do!
So good. Love hearing that 🙌🏻
Great video. I'm definitely guilty of not shooting enough - it's either "ok, an hour's more footage" or lunch. Lunch always wins, which infuriates the guys in post-production. Which is also me.
Try intermittent fasting. It's great!
NOT SHOOTING ENOUGH is so true. There always comes that moment when I think "I have plenty of b-roll". I have learned after that thought, I need to double it. Great tips
So true!
Double it, and then double it up again.
Different angles
Different focal lengths of the same shot
Left - Right
Right - Left
The list is endless hey..
The word "broll" was mentioned 94 times in this vídeo.
Wait you actually counted that
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah 😂
What's broll 🤣
It's 95 times, count again
@@manmademachine3330 Youuuuu ^^
Sometimes I have made directional shot mistakes, but I find it fun to edit them into working.
'Brain is a pretty weird thing.' Matti Haapoja, 2019
Good that you entered 2019. Because he will tell something different in 2020!
@@vsnulive He did!
As a beginner I really appreciate videos like this! Thanks for sharing
Solid broski 💡
"Enjoy making the filmmaking process" well said, well explained. Thank you!
Wow I really needed this reminder today. Definitely falling into the trap of "pretty pictures" lately instead of complete actual thought. I need to go out and practice more.
Learn a lot! Thanks!🙏
Been doing youtube for 2 years and didn't know what B roll even was. Thanks to Peter and you Uh I know better now.
You say B-roll Police, I saw B-roll God :-) I shoot more and more b-roll now because of you so thank you. (hey and .... I never thought to add lights like that ... thanks for sharing that info in your office). Have a great rest of your week, Matti x
Haha you’re funny 😂
I used to make almost all of these!
I'm such a clutz, thank you Matti for helping me realize my mistakes
Great tips as always, Matti!
If you are doing a camera move from point A to point B, it's best to hold on the start and end points for much longer than you think you need to. Likewise, if you're shooting a shot of a static object, hold for at least a ten count. It gives you options in the edit.
Because of the title and thumbnail, I thought this vid was about the right and wrong way a bro should walk
Solid tips Matty. No one ever explains it properly to try and help. So thanks!
Thanks alot Matti ,greetings from Iraq bro.
i always love how you use the sunlight as your side light even though you didn't mention it just now.
well it looks like sunlight . i may be wrong.
i love how you and peter use each others footage. i need to find a friend like that lol
Wanna be friends? 👬
I love BROLL but have always been terrible at making it. Something just looked off. This video made everything click. Thank you so much!
Matti Youre amazing I love your videos!
🙏🏻
Super helpful advice as always. Definitely need to implement these tips because I've definitely made all of these mistakes! Cheers Matti
I like this video it helps me a lot as a begineer or a person with no idea or experience at all.keep it up bro so i can learn more to you , you are my mentor..vroom vroom vroom
I think this is your best video yet! Thank you thank you Matti!!
What do u think average secs you should film b Roll?
Awesome man 🙏🏻 totally depends on the video
Great tips on broll. I definitely need to think more about sequences when filming broll. The out-take about the lights and need to charge them was so relate-able.
Oh I read B-Roll as Broll, and was trying to imagine if that was like a Bro going on a Stroll or something....
Background lighting is very important, dare I say equally important to the facial illumination. The key is in the little things. I don't know how much video noise (if any) was cleaned in post but when you turned off that key light the quality was dope. You have a very decent (leaning towards impressive) camera. It seems we have similar taste in how the lighting of a room should be. Not to strong, from the side, which allows a soft naturalistic shadow to fall on your face and basically look like a better version of natural lighting. I call it "Twilight Lush". It's as if we're in the room with you not on some TV movie set.
As someone who just makes art videos, this was really interesting!
Got a ton of ideas. To get the most out of this video I'll have to try this stuff and out and come back several times to compare what I'm doing to what you're saying.
Time to learn! Hoping to make our travel videos even better!
Yessss 🙌🏻
You can break down the movement rule even more. For example is it also important that walking does look consistent when switching angles in a scene and the character does not do "two left steps in a row" or something like that..
B-roll is definitely a weakness of mine, but something I've really come to enjoy working on. It's maybe only in the last year that I've understood how important and interesting b-roll is. I talk about b-roll enough with my husband, that even he will say things like, "If you had some b-roll shots in this section, I think that would be more interesting." xD
Great video Matti, thank you!
Such a good tips man. I already confused about the moment when capture, but know I understand.
*Now
This is what I was looking for!!!😎👍👍👍 perfect! Details makes the difference! 👊

This video is a charged one. Thanks Prof. Matti.

Love you tagline, Learn, Make, Repat and enjoy the filmmaking process! Bring it back:)))
Can you say me best laptop for editing and gaming at same time under 1500$??
look at MSI. I edit 4k off my laptop
HP Omen!!!
Most computer that are good at gaming are also good at editing. The biggest difference is ports -- and the display. For editing the more ports the better.
This was actually really helpful!!!!!! I’m going to consider all these things when shooting B roll for my video tomorrow. Thanks!!!!
I love being able to maintain consistency between wide and closeup shots (like the orbit shot of Matt used here). It’s always so satisfying!
Very consistent in your points. I am happy now 😊
Thanks for the tips Matti! Greetings from Rosarito Beach, México, I'll buy you tacos whenever you come over.
Heard sirens in the beginning of the video and I looked out my window haha
Haha trippy right? I was in the zone filming didn’t even hear it
My problem is being afraid of filming in public. I have anxiety (like so many people) and I get nervous with people looking at me, and staring. It’s annoying and I know I need to just get over it and I probably will get over it, by doing it. I have so many ideas written down and memorized. I want to learn and get better.
When I shoot B-roll footage, I try to think in sequences of at least 2 or 3 shots, of the same subject. So, sequences do work. But more in a sense of cuts to other angles of the same "action".
Also, when I upload B-roll-style footage to stock agencies, I try to deliver these multiple "sequence" shots. Editors tend to like those, to cut from an establishing shot to a medium... and follow the action.
Great tips explained very well. p.s. I only found out what BROLL was yesterday.
Wow this was so helpful I didn’t even think about directional shots i will be working on these i am also working on those cuts that tell the story quick too
so many funny transitions at beginning Matti!
Don't want to be "that guy", but it's spelled "B-Roll" or "B Roll".
For a second there I was wondering what the hell "BROLL" was (the video's title). lol
One of the finest tutorial video. Thanks 🖤
B-Roll is a must for me now, I love it!
Thanks a lot I finally find your video again apart the one I saw on Colour grading. You have to charge them coz we are waiting for more videos
The small little lights are the best
I agreeee
I use to always run out of broll! For sure overshoot so you have plenty to choose from!!
this is very true - to add, DON't talk to the talent or let the talent talk to you, too much. Save time and JUST SHOOT!
Thanks. Interesting, helpful and useful. As you've already said, it's about doing it, creating, those extra shots, angles. I think of many ideas, then seldom do them as i get distracted tooooo easily. I blame the weed. 😇
All time worst sin in b-roll? Not getting out and shooting 🤙🏾
Biggest mistake I tend to make is not holding a shot long enough! I'm always mentally moving on to what I will film next that I cut the shot I'm currently on too quickly and then I get into the edit and will want a few extra seconds. I end up having to use my TC counter so I don't count to 10 too quickly in my head...
Good. Thanks
I've been overshooting my b-roll lately, mainly because i just got the a6400 & my 1st gimbal... everyone makes it look like you just set up the gimbal and magically you have awesome footage, I'll take 5 minutes of video & maybe 30 seconds will be useable... Gotta learn somehow, that's my favorite part of any of my passions, the challenge of learning & getting better... Great video, as always, thanks for all the tips...(I'm editing as we speak, hahaha)
Using all B-roll takes is just fine. When you really run out of B-roll is when you start to use different parts of B-roll and even start to use them in reverse, just to disguise sama takes used for the third or 4th time. My record is making 50 minutes documentary out of footage from single small BetacamSP tape (35 min of raw footage at max). No one noticed I ran out of A-roll and B-roll in the first 15 minutes of time.
Very helpful tips! Sadly I know them already and ma still making those mistakes. But good reminder anyway. My *problem* and probably many people can relate: as film making is just a hobby for me, I am doing it while traveling most of the time, because there happen a lot of exciting things. *BUT* I struggle a lot to get the "story telling shots" as you mentioned with the on wheel. F.e. we rent a car, drive to a cool mountain and are happy. I know my shots should be: 1: we get in the car, 2: we turn it on, 3: we drive while hearing radio and having fun 4: we get out of the car, 5: show the mountain, 6: show our reaction/how amazed we are.... That would be a good b-roll "story". But then suddenly my "fellow traveler" already got out of the car and I couldn't film that ... 😂 I can't get these shots without annoying someone or doing them all over again like on a film set. But then all the fun and authenticity is gone somehow... Any ideas?
You are a consummate communicator, Matti. Thank you.
I'm surprised no subtitles available... dang oh well, see ya later
Subtitles are working now.
I have some brolls in my first short film that I uploaded 3 days ago. Thanks for the video, it is gonna help improve my future videos!
I watched the whole video and still don't know what BROLL is, so as an educational video, this was pretty useless.
great job
Huge help Matti! Thanks for the video. I’ve definitely made those mistakes and still do from time to time.
Hey Matti! I've been a dedicated subscriber for quite some time now, and I've learned a lot about filmmaking from you. I've finally created a travel video I'm proud of. It's in Japan, which I recently visited. Would be awesome if you or anyone else reading this could check it out and let me know what you think!
You're a gift bro. Respect
too much B-roll. film making is waaaayyy more than that
Super appreciated these tips! We are filming a B roll tomorrow so this was very helpful!!
You made a really basic mistake in saying "you guys" when there's only one of me. A lot of YouGuysTubers make that mistake. Fix it!
Nice thank you Matti. Always learn a bunch when i watch your videos. Haha and keep those lights charged, i feel your pain.
VERY helpful. thank you
Thanks Matti for your helpful tips...You are very easy to tune in to...
I love your tips Matti! Thanks!
Such a big help for new learners ♡ Thank you Matti!
Thanks.. hopefully I can improve my skills soon
Is it time for another Drone battle between Peter and Matti? What about a team drone battle? Matti and Peter vs Casey and Jesse?
Learned some things. Will implement that!
Thank you.
This was great. Very helpful. I really liked what you said about sequence to help with planning how many different types of shots to take. With my first experience shooting b roll, I used up all my footage halfway through the video and had to repeat shots 2-3 times :(
Thank you so much Sir! Keep the way how you explain. Very easy to understand and entertaining. I hope I can apply all those with practices.
Thanks Matti. I know my BRoll is going to improve over time from watching your videos. It already has!
🙌🏻
Very helpful for improving my storytelling game. thanks, Matti!
I just experienced this in my recent vlog. It was a bit hard to vlog during dance practice, but I should've recorded more broll in different scenes (check out the vlog if you want). I think planning your b-roll shots fix all these issues!
Thanks for these tips Matti!
Yea never enough broll!
The transition at 0:46.... awesome
Thanks Matti!
Great tips Matti, everything (or at least B Roll) can always be better!
This is very helpful.. Im just a plain vlogger but I love B-roll and im practicing hehe
Some good points, I hadn’t thought about the movement direction
