    At 3:00 when you say there is more detail in the shadows, maybe I see that although the parameters are the same, the eos r is a little more overexposed. but I also see a little more noise in the eos r?
    I do mostly photography with people, and I am between the 5d mark iv and the eos r. I would like very much if you could make a comparison in terms of skin tones :)
    Thank you

      All of there comparison shots were at the same settings, so maybe the R is just a tad more sensitive? Hard to say. The RAW images appeared to be roughly the same exposure. I know it can be hard to judge on RUclips, but looking at the files in photoshop I didn’t notice any extra noise in the R. I went back and forth quite a bit and didn’t notice much difference at all.

    Interesting your low light examples showed better for the R however Tony & Chelsea's video showed colour banding in low light on the R after bringing the shadows up. Something often have to do in low light events.

      Sometimes if you can overexposed a tad then bring the shadows down in post, that’ll help with the banding.

    Ones you put RF lens on the R, you can see that R is much better. I have both cameras and few lenses. For example, if you would compare mark IV with 50 1.2 L and R with RF 50 1.2 mm you be impressed. I would recommend to go with R only if you plan to invest into the entire system using the adapter only till you get actual RF glass.

    • @rynfilms
      @rynfilms  5 лет назад

      The RF lenses are very nice, but I'm still getting really great results with the adaptor and my EF 24-70. I wouldn't say don't do it, but I'm guessing the RF line is the future of Canon.

  • @photog1529

    Nice comparison. I never saw the need to upgrade from my my 5D2, but I also shoot with a Sony A7R2 since I have a lot of older Canon FD glass that is easily adaptable to the Sony and, surprisingly, the IQ holds up really well. I may give the EOS-R a look. How is the battery life on the R?...electronic viewfinders and touch screens seem to put a drain on them (the only Sony shortcoming that I've experienced). Also, does Canon plan to offer an FD-to-EOS R adapter? That was my one Canon gripe when they moved to the EF lineup...older glass was no longer usable. Thanks again for an excellent comparison.

    • @rynfilms
      @rynfilms  5 лет назад

      I haven’t found much of a difference in battery life between the 5D4 and the R. They also use the same battery which is great! You’ll be able to use the batteries out of the 5D2 as well. I don’t know about the adaptor, sorry.

    Decent video, thanks for the review!
    I wanted to upgrade from my good old 5DII beginning of the year but don't wanted to wait, if Canon is coming out with a decent mirrorless at all. My heart said 5DIV, but the reasonable decision regarding an upcomming new canon comes to a purchase of the 6DII. In my opinion, the right decision and I have a better feeling to get the EOS R when I'm ready. (and that means "when I have found out to buy a new camera again AND explain it my girlfriend" ...I would be so lost without her)

    I recently got an R to compliment my IV for video work. I have to admit I like it more then I want despite some annoyances (the button layout), but the price point at 1500$ and now with the new improved eye AF on the 1.4.0 firmware it's a very decent buy. First of all, Ryan, I would like to thank you for very nice review and comparison. 👍 You spoke about all the stuff that really matters without going too much into hardware specifications. You got yourself a thumbs up and a subscriber here! 😊
    I am fairly new in the field of photography but I fell in love with it very fast, and I might say learning about it even faster. I bought Canon 77D as entry-level camera for at the time I wasn't sure what kind of photography I am going for. After some months I realized that, for now, I am mostly drawn into street photography, photography at night and mainly low light situation, also some portrait photography. I probably don't need to tell you how disappointed I was in crop sensor and impaired ability to shoot in low light conditions. Whenever I went with ISO higher than 800 things were not going well for 77D, hard to handheld with lower shutter speed, needed to use tripod, etc…
    Now to my questions if you have time to answer, please:
    1. Is it a good move to go from crop frame to full frame sensor for better ISO capabilities and handling low light conditions?
    2. I am leaning heavily towards EOS R but my main concern is that on several reviews I heard people call it “family camera”… My idea is to shoot and offer my work to stock so is EOS R good for fields I am interested in? That includes: street, low light, night, some portrait and maybe macro. I do not intend to use it for sports, wide landscape, weddings.
    3. Everyone is also speaking highly about RF 24-105 mm but my main concern there is the f/4 and ability of that lens to work in fields of photography I just mentioned, specially low light. I do not have any L class lenses for 77D, so what lenses EF or RF, L or not L, would you recommend me if I go with EOS R? Lenses that will, preferably, not go heavy on budget. 😃
    P.S. I have EF-S 18-135, EF S 55-250, EF-S 24 mm f/2.8. I will sell those three probably and only keep 4th one, that is EF 50 mm f/1.8.
    Thanks in advance and best regards!

    Correct me if i am wrong.
    The EOS R has eye tracking auto focus.
    Were else other than the R, can i get the eye auto focus and work with my extensive and expensive EF lenses.
    The eye tracker, interests me as my eyesight is not so good.
    I mainly do wildlife photography.
    Thanks.

    • @rynfilms
      @rynfilms  3 года назад

      Hi Keith, the R does have eye AF. It was a feature they added after I made this video.
      I would think about the new R5 or R6 for eye tracking and wildlife. The AF on the new bodies are really good. I can only say for sure that the eye tracking for humans is much better on the R6 than on the R.

    The 5DMKIV gives me peace of mind when shooting long videos for clients. The EOS R is a great camera, no doubt about it, but is is still relatively new and I would not have it as an A camera for video production. I almost bought the EOS R6 but then I read about the overheating issues so I decided to buy the 5D regardless that is getting old. It works perfect. I actually don’t mind the 4K crop, I am using the sigma 18-35mm (30ish- 57ish mm) for wide shots in 4K. This EOS R would be a perfect B camera to use in my Ronin SC and for b-roll though.

    Big omission in this comparison is the AF, how does AF compare?

    • @rynfilms
      @rynfilms  4 года назад

      In my experience, the R may be just slightly slower, may... The big difference I noticed is the ability to set your focus point anywhere on the R. To me, that is better than ever so slightly faster AF. Maybe for sports, the AF would be more important.

      Hi Mitchell, the only issue I’ve had focusing in low light with the R is after the sun was totally gone and there was absolutely no light around. Surprising, I know. I rented the EOS R. I have the 5DMKIII and the one thing I loved over the 5DMKIII was the ability of the EOS R to focus in low light. It is MUCH better than the 5D. In low light the EVF lights up to give the ability to focus in near darkness. Just this ability sold me to purchase the EOS R over upgrading the 5DMK IV

    I use this camera professionally for commercial and editorial work and it def can hold its own IF you are not shooting fast moving subjects. It is very very hard to track fast moving subjects in continuous mode. They may fix this eventually but if u shoot a ton of movement don’t buy it. Otherwise it’s better than a mark if and the battery never dies for me. That being said the AF accuracy destroys any DSLR with slower moving subjects.

      That’s a hard question to answer. To start I would put money into lenses. If you’re starting from scratch and money is no problem I would invest in the RF lenses and the EOS R. If you’re on more of a budget, pick up some good, used EF lenses and maybe start off with a 5D MK3. Then you can upgrade to a camera in the future that fits your shooting style. A good starting lens would be a 24-70 f/2.8. Then add on a 16-35 and a 70-200. Those 3 will take care of almost any shoot you want to do.

    I have both cameras and one thing I've noticed is that the 5div tends to underexpose about a third of a stop where the R overexposed about a third.
    The night shot shows this because with the 5d seemed better because the subject had better exposure of the subject than the R and the shadow detail you pointed out shows that as well. The difference in detail in the background is a mute point because at 2.8 it just shows the 5d has better bokeh..
    In the studio shot the difference shown isn't a fair comparison because there is more light on the face of the 5d from the side light than on the R which gives the impression of more shadow detail..
    The night shot under the bridge also shows the difference in exposure, the street lights at the bottom center shows the difference in exposure which will also make a difference I. The sky color..
    Again I have both and love them for what they can and can not do... Is the R better.... At some things "YES" but overall (in my opinion ) NO...
    I shoot professionally and use both and for the most part I can use either one and get what I need.. Neither is a disappointment, money well spent but havi g to choose one as a professional I'd have to choose the 5D because the battery life, security of dual cards and a few other reasons... The R is a great camera by all means and most won't be disappointed but I can't call it better..

    Good comparo, but not much mention about the EOS R's EVF, which at 3M+ dots is a game changer. What-you-see-is-what-you-get allows one to +/-- EVs BEFORE pressing the shutter, which in turn means fewer over- and underexposure shots. I buy mirrorless cameras mainly because of the EVF...and IBIS.

    • @rynfilms

      Good call Chak, I was still getting used to the EVF when I shot this video. I’m starting to like it a lot! The only time I found it unusable what with extreme low light photography.

      The EF glass works great with the R. It does have Digital IS, but it only works in movie mode. I know, not helpful for photos. I'm still getting used to the touch bar. It doesn't look like it cam be set for exposure compensation though.

    • @chakwong
      @chakwong 5 лет назад

      RYN photography, can't use the Multifunction Bar to adjust Exposure Compensation? That's a bummer! Thanks for investigating.

    • @rynfilms
      @rynfilms  5 лет назад +3

      That makes sense. I never shoot in servo mode, so it would have never come up for me. Good call!! 👍

    • @ianjack6868
      @ianjack6868 5 лет назад +5

      So does that mean you are able to refocus and press the shutter release 8 times a second? If not then the theoretical ability to shoot at 8fps using one shot is pretty much worthless. Unless you are shooting something that is not moving of course - but then why would you need to take 8 photos of a subject that is not moving?The video does not make it clear that in situations where you need a high burst rate (eg for sport or wildlife) you would be using AI servo and therefore for practical purposes the EOS R has a maximum burst rate of 5fps.

I have watched a few videos now about Canons r camera and I notice right away that both you and commentors have had similar issues, like sudden freezing of the camera.

    Oh my, a concise & common sense review and I too live in the desert (LV)..!!
    NO fungus in our lenses.. LOL!
    I jumped back into photography two years ago (an old darkroom troll from the 60's) w/an 80D which is serving me well with a nice complement of APS-C and FF (mainly tele) lenses.
    Sept. '18, I dipped my FF toe in the water w/a minty 1DS MK II (the brick) for $400..
    I have added a few good glass gen purpose FF lenses (this camera needs good glass).
    Since my FF appetite is wetted, I was about to make a gray market 5D4 purchase ($2200+- new), when the 'R' came out, but common sense reviews like yours have convinced me to buy the 'R'.
    The fact that I can use my Canon EF and EFS lenses in addition to my Tamron and Sigma lenses makes this purchase a no brainer..
    For 'me', the flippy screen to which I have become accustomed w/the 80D, is a fair trade off for the 'R's single card slot and positive price point (scs also in the 80D)..
    Lastly, Canon cameras don't suffer from rush-to-market failures (although they do hold back things we all want in one camera), unlike Sony's endless money grabbing revisions and some Nikon lemons.
    Thanks again..

    I had the 5D mark IV but switched to thr EOS R.
    Reasons:
    - Viewfinder shows exactly how the picture will look like.
    - light weight which allows you to take it with you and use it more often.
    - flip screen, you can’t miss it when you want to take photos and videos from different angles.
    - focus peaking, extremely useful when filming and doing macro photography.
    - allows you to use all Canon lenses.
    - cheaper, costs less than the 5D.
    - better colors, the eis R has better colors than the 5D. Noticed that the 5D made all images and videos a bit darker.
    However, the 5D had better quality 4K video but a lot larger file size. It also had dual card slots which you definitely need if you’re into wedding and special moments photography. The 5D doesn’t record video on two cards though, what a shame.
    That’s my review for these two cameras.

    While i do know i`ll move to mirrorless at some point, I will wait for 5Dmk5 or R 5D eqviv. Main difference for me is less buttons to do certain things. I don't care much to program buttons to do stuff because if it breaks i have to rent a new one and waste time reprogramming everything. So no ... i want dedicated buttons like on 5D mainly because muscle memory and speed. Also Joystick. Yes yes ... i would prefer to have that thumb-pad like on old IBM laptops that was used to replace touch-pad since that was amazing and was pressure sensitive, so it was easy to control. Also Thumb-space ... I have tried EOS R ... my thumb always is placed on new gimmicky magick slide that almost everyone turns off right away. But still is really uncomfortable to hold and grip camera with finger right there (I have big hands, don't judge). Overall in sheer speed of use on location where conditions are changing ... 5D wins hands down in my book. I hope one day Canon will release 5D form-factor mirrorless camera just because its far more intuitive then this new experiment.

    Thank you for the video but I'm still in the fence... I went to a store to test both cameras... coming from a canon 80d I found very easy to handle the 5D mark IV cause is very similar in the controls. In the other hand I was a lost with the canon EOS R. I loved the mirrorless viewfinder as it showed real life image but with the new controls I felt almost like it was a different brand of camera. In terms of cost you can find on Ebay a bright new Canon 5D Mark IV Body for $2000 and the EOS R for $2200. So price is about the same and you can get a even better deals with lens used. I know the mirrorless is the future for Canon but I don't know if I'm ready to sacrifice my workflow to get a new camera that will make me look like a amateur in the beginning or get a 5D Mark IV and wait until the next best thing comes from canon in the next 2 years.

    I think that, the best answer is budget, and actual equipment, if you already have a 5d mark IV and runs with one body only there is no reason to put budget on a R.
    But if you are about to make an upgrade of a smaller sensor or model camera, between the two, having so close output on the photo part. I think the amount of possibilities on the R make the choice for you.
    Same price range, newer technologies, keeps what it is gold from the old models, are able to utilizes the best of both worlds. Battery life, one card slot, this are fairly replaceable with extra batteries on the bag, and sd card pouch, about speed in the burst mode, 5 against 7 is kind of a big deal, but specific demand, for a specific public. if you are gonna take most of your photos in full speed, and burst mode, yeah, maybe it`s better to keep if 5d mk4. But an upgrade investment for the general all around equipment, i don`t see why not EOS R

    I'm thinking long and hard about the EOS R... but I have also been considering just jumping into the 1DX mkiii when it drops in a year or so, since that will open up a lot more and I can hold back on any other upgrades for awhile... or at least until someone sends me their cameras for free LOL

But: -No talk about the batteries.... -am I alone on loosing power in no time on the MkIV - even when just in the bag on the way to a job. Three hours (no working) - and puff.... ?

      Agreed, if you’re only using it as a photo camera, there is not a good reason to get the MKIV over the MKIII. If you’re shooting video, there are many reasons to upgrade. I haven’t seen any noticeable difference in battery life between the 3, 4, and the R. Are you using Canon batteries or off brand? Canon batteries for me always hold a charge better than the others.

    Some questions, is EOS R a professional camera though? I have the 5d Mk3, I am thinking of getting the Mk4 as my upgrade, but I think the EOS R has some great technology. I believe Canon is going with mirrorless in the future, but I do like the ergonomics of the 5d. Which one should I get?

    • @rynfilms

      It’s a hard call to make. At this point I would hold off buying anything until the next camera comes out. I like both cameras, they each have there place in my bag. I do use the R much more than the 5d4, i like the ergonomics better on it. As for lenses, if you have the money to buy all RF, then do it! Every one I’ve tested out has been amazing. But make sure to get whatever works best for you.

      If you already have a MK4, I’d say stick with it. If you want to add a camera or are deciding between the two, go for the R! I know a lot of people are dead set on 2 card shooting. I’ve been using cameras with 2 slots for years and have never shot to more than one card at the same time. I do use high end cards and not the cheapest I can find. Card failure has never been an issue for me.

Mirrorless, like most tech products is a game of "Anything you can do, I can do better". EOSR and Z7/Z6 have given Sony the perfect tips as to what to improve. Dual Pixel? check(firmware 5), Flip screen? sort-of, better color? check. Better ergonomics and 10bit out. That is what they have left, not much at all

    Hi! I don't know why you didn't specify that the Eos R capture 1/3 brighter images than 5D mk IV. If you rise the shadows on the 5d files you will have the same details as Eos R. If you search for other RUclips comparisons with the same cameras, you will find that the colours are not the same. Eos R produces brighter and slight greenish skin colours than 5D mk IV. ( Exception is when you use flash)
    Sorry but I cannot accept from an professional photographer to don't see this . It is very clear from the first photo.
    I have owned the Eos R more than one year, RP for almost one year, and the jpeg colours from RP are nicer.
