Canon 5D Mark IV review: • 10 Reasons Why I'm sti...
It’s never been a better time to grab a quality full frame Canon camera for a ‘sort of’ affordable price.
With the release of the Canon R5 and R6 many Canon users are funding their new purchases by selling off their older camera bodies, so lot’s of 5D Mark IV’s and EOS-R’s are finding their way onto the second hand market place and recently it’s a question that I get asked A LOT: Should I get a Canon 5DMarkIV DSLR or a mirrorless EOS-R camera?
So today I’m taking a closer look at the EOS-R and 5DMarkIV side by side to hopefully answer that question for you.

Some months ago i bought a Canon EOS M5. At a low price range it offers great autofocus in combination with the touchscreen. I hope the Canon EOS R's price drops also. Think i would go for the Canon eos R!

5D4 all day. When it breaks, I will buy another one. Y’all can keep that mirrorless tech. The day I buy a nitro less camera is when they no longer make DSLR’s. Plus I hate EVF and absolutely hate the battery life on mirrorless.

This was brilliant Kai! We love both of these cameras and have used the 5D Mark IV quite a lot when Wera was working at a photography studio last year. That thing is a tank! It's a tough choice, but think we would still go for the EOS R just for the convenience of the flip out screen, the size and weight and eye AF. It's quite weird going back to an older DSLR and using AF point selection for portrait shoots for example! The results from the photos looked very similar but both looked great anyway.

    • @KaiCreative

Thanks for sharing Aaron! It's great to hear the experiences from experienced users such as yourself. The newer tech inside these cameras certainly make the user experience much easier. When I occasionally go back to my 5DMarkiii I'm always tapping the screen for DPAF! 😂😂

I have both the EOS 5D MKIV and the EOS R. I too have come through the 5D ranks using all the 5D models. I do like the EOS R, however, where I feel the EOS R falls short is in bright daylight photography.

  • @lq1044

Great review. I have both cameras. I do landscape and wildlife. After many years of using the 5D4, I am used to under expose by 1/3 stop for bright outdoor. When moving to the R, I don't have to under expose for bright outdoor. But the EVF is quite misleading, it always look over exposed. I had to adjust the EVF brightness so I don't think I am over exposing for landscape. For wildlife, the R is the better camera. I bought the R a couple years ago mainly for my trip to Kruger NP. Before the trip, I have tested both extensively at home on my 100-400mm L and the R is sharper with my 100-400mm L, way sharper. When taking bird photos, the feather grains come out way sharper with the R. For landscape and portrait, both cameras are the same in sharpness. For macro, the R is sharper. While in Kruger, I used only the R (and the 100-400mm L) because I can manually drag the focusing point anywhere to get to the animals eyes; I can't do that with the 5D4. I am extremely please with my Kruger NP wildlife photos. I can practically count the eyelashes on the animal eyes. I don't think my 5D4 can give me that kind of sharpness when it comes to wildlife. I prefer OVF over EVF anyday for landscape. I can see the gradual change of PL filter better with OVF comparing to EVF.

Great review man! What I think sets you apart from many of the other review channels out there is that you are actually creating stuff with the cameras you review, like doing photo sessions and creating short films and using them for corporate work, etc, which is one of the reasons I actually trust what you're telling me 👏 keep it going 🔥

For the photo comparison, native glass is so important. The lens mount really makes a difference. The pics from the 5D stood out to me as much sharper with less distortion, more contrasty and journalistic looking, suitable for a magazine.

I picked the 5d 4 over the eos-r as out on moorland doing landscape i needed something with durability, waterpoof, rock solid, like most of canon dslr before. the eos-r is more in my mind a light use camera but still a great camera from the images i seen from it.

    • @KaiCreative
      @KaiCreative  3 года назад +2

The 5D Mark IV definitely holds that durability badge as far as I'm concerned. I've also used it out in the rain, snowing and cold conditions in central park in NY and hot humid climates like Malaysia and it just keeps on giving me the results I need for my clients! Saying that I am trusting the EOS-R more and more and a lot of content creators I follow, have used it and swear by it, so that's also a reassuring tick in my book, time will tell (:

I wanted however to break into video and so bought a Sony A7III and use the meta-bones adapter so I can use the existing canon glass. Not being experienced with video, I am wondering if I made the right choice? Still in order to use my EF glass on the EOS-R, I would still need an adapter, what do you think?

    • @KaiCreative

Andrew Collier made an interesting comment regarding the photos he said that he needs an increase in magenta by about 12 units on the EOS-R to match the 5d4 when the white balance on the 5d4 is set to daylight. I shoot raw so it’s easy to adjust. I love both cameras and they both have advantages for different jobs. When i got the R it took me a while to work out what the difference was and why the daylight WB looked different. I often use both together on the same shoots so getting a balance was important.

Will there be such a big difference in the quality of the photo that it is worth the 1.500€ more that you have to give to replace it? Ok R6 have IBIS, new sensor, fast AF, but less mpxs, etc .. But also depends a lot on what you want to do!
If you're using the camera for your own content creation then I would probably favour the EOS-R, but it I needed something reliable for professional photoshoots I would probably pick the 5D Mark IV because of the dual card slots (:

My 5D3 died of old age and the dilemma is which one to get as a mate to my current 5D4...A very nice chap who was selling his 5D4 said definitely go for the R (which was counter-intuitive for his sale). So I just don't know. If the lottery ticket comes up it'll be an R5. Aaargg ! 🤣

Your Markiii died 😯 how did that happen? thought they were near indestructible😬 mine is sitting in a draw - I’m thinking to pull it out for a 2020 review 🤔 anyway - having come down the Canon full frame DSLR route myself, 6D, 5Dmarkiii, 5DMarkIV I was a little apprehensive to get the EOSR, I was going to skip it altogether, but after using it now for a bit it’s definitely the camera that I’m going for more and more for personal projects ( I have yet to really use it for corporate work due to the freelance drying up this year) but it will probably accompany me alongside my 5DmarkIV when things start to pick up again (: R5 is another story - I’m trying to get one to play around with - but proving a little bit tricky 😔

@@KaiCreative I trust your reviews more than any others because you don't just highlight the new gear's positives, you give a better +/- evaluation. I am looking forward for your evaluation of the R5. I've had my 1DX and 5DIII since the day they were released and they have been fabulous but 10 years old I think it might be time for a change. With rumor that there will be no 5DV I am considering switching the 5DIII for a 5DIV before they get discontinued or both for R5. My photography is mostly wildlife on safari's in Africa, Nepal, Galapagos and Antarctica, also trips to the Himalaya. I do not shoot a lot of video. I already know that if I go to the R5 then I will be keeping my EF lenses because the current R offering has long zooms that "breathe" in dirty air. 1 trip with a EF 100-400 and it needed an complete internal clean. Another concern of mine is the battery life, I'm hoping to get a full day of shooting on 2 batteries...without sacrificing (having to turn off) camera features (sometimes I've also had to go 2-3 days without charging options available). Also of note for the R5 to me was the Exposure Compensation was more limited +/-3 vs +/-5...but perhaps the sensor captures more dynamic range so they felt they didn't need to go further?

Just got the Canon 90D and tbh, thinking about going mirrorless and grabbing the EOS R. Seems like it's the best option for the year, being that MKIV is discontinued. Want to stay with the times plus the differences in photos can be corrected by adjusting the settings of the EOS R.

I've had a few comments on the colour being better for skin tones on the 5DMarkIV.... Andrew Collier made an interesting comment regarding the photos he said that he "needs an increase in magenta by about 12 units on the EOS-R to match the 5d4 when the white balance on the 5d4 is set to daylight. I shoot raw so it’s easy to adjust. I love both cameras and they both have advantages for different jobs. When i got the R it took me a while to work out what the difference was and why the daylight WB looked different. I often use both together on the same shoots so getting a balance was important. "

    • @KaiCreative

      🤔 from my standpoint:
‘Usability’ is having more than just 4K as a filming option (i.e also having 1080).
‘Overall convenience’ of use would be not having to have additional kit (like the Atomos Ninja V )to be able to record 10bit.
      Does that makes sense ?🤔

Hi Kai, thank you for your very valuable video! Picture and video quality seems to be pretty similar, but I think that one of the major difference between the two cameras is the fact that when you are shooting with a mirrorless, not only you can hold the camera and the video screen in different positions, but you can also see the outcome of your shoting in real time and evnetually adjust exposure and framing according to what you see on the scrren. On the other hand, if you like to shoot by looking throught the viewfinder, rather than looking at the screen, you might not like the digital viewfinfer as much as the optical one. With the 5D you can only shoot by looking in the optical viewfinder. That I think is also a good point to consider. Cheers! Ciao, Luca

Sounds like you’ve never shot with a 5D as what you’re saying is incorrect. You can definitely shoot stills and video by using the screen in the back. And specifically video can only be shot by using the back screen.

Eos R - poor ergonomics. If you are used to a full-sized DSLR, you would not be happy with the EOS R. Basically requires the user to curl up the fingers of the right hand in order to avoid hitting the wrong buttons on the back. That multi-function bar at the back is a killer. It works by capacitance so therefore provides no tactile feedback.
