Even though I have an R6 & R5 I am keeping my 5D Mark IV. There is no camera out there that is this much of a work horse with this quality. It still is my choice camera for my studio work.
@metallestat5972 6D is a great camera, the 5D Mark IV is amazing. I am going on vacation taking my 5D4 for photos and my R5 for 4K video. The only thing I don't like about the 5D4 is the 4K video, cropped massive files don't work for me. Enjoy your 5D4, one of the best cameras ever made.
Before I watched your video I found a Mark IV used and bought it. I've hesitated since I have a Mark II and have been pleased with it. Your video sort of got rid of my buyer remorse, if I really had any, so thank you. Be well.
5D Classic here! I ve been using it for years years. 2005 manufacture date. It is still usable. Even commercially. It takes brain and not money, to produce great pics. Postprocess does a lot as well. But switching to R6II next month. Cant wait.
The 5D classic produces some magic that’s never been replicated… even with the massive advancement of sensors, there was something about the classic’s sensor that is nostalgic. But the switch to the R6 II will be insane!
@@KenCreates Thank you for your answer. Hell yeah, gonna be great. I am in a desperate need of video capabilities and better focusing. Even though I learned pretty accurately how to focus via ONE center focus point, advancing in technology will help and extend my options.
Recently upgraded from 6D to 5D Mark IV and a few days ago I also bought 5D MK1 or Classic in MINT condition...fantastic camera!!! Love shooting with it! Both Mark IV and Mark I are unique and fantastic cameras!
The 5D Mk4 is my go to camera for professional work. I have had it since 2016 and have no plans to change. I bought an R7 for travel compactness and it's very nice but the pictures from the 5D can't be beat.
Hey Ken, an excellent concise review of the Canon 5D Mark IV and its relevance in 2024. Being a late adopter and still an owner of a Nikon D3100, I picked up a 5D only last weekend, to shoot at a wedding! It was the groom's D5. The D5 was a lot of fun to shot with and I was immediately struck by the weight and solidness of the grip and body's construction. Your anecdotes that likened the 5D's robustness to a Toyota car where they had survived drops and drowning was insightful. I was handling the 5D as if it were a crystal glass, had always assumed that cameras and optics are fragile. Nice insights about the 5D throughout your review. 👍
I absolutely love mine! It just works! I use it to photograph EVERYTHING!!! I would only trade it for the 1DX iii for the extra low light and smaller file size. The battery life is wonderful and the images feel so awesome! Thanks for thoughts!
Still using this camera to this day, bought it around 2019! I really enjoy this camera a lot, and for what I do it’s almost perfect. Just used it for a wedding and it still produce some fantastic photos. I will say as I am getting even more experience with this camera. I am learning that lighting makes it even better, which is with most cameras obviously. But this one in particular, I try to make sure my lighting are as good as it can be so the camera can really shine.
It’s almost the perfect wedding camera! I have to say I find that the 5D IV handles difficult and mixed lighting like a champ. Feed it good light and it does something magical!
Good all round evaluation. I have a 5Div and its output is fabulous. Heavy, yes... rugged, yes... Image quality, second to none! Any camera one has is only as good as the person using it 😄
Good Review! I want one for photos. I currently have a 90D I have mastered very well for photos, and I have 3 very expensive EF lens. I don't have a problem with mirrorless, but I can wait for bargains, and I am sure I will pick one that fits my usage.
The Canon 5D vs a more modern mirrorless like like choosing between 2024 and a 1960s Mustang. The modern Mustang may be technically superior, but the classic is far more satisfying.
The main problem i have with the 5D mark IV is its price. When comparing used prices, 5D Mark IVs still go for around 1000-1200 euro in good condition with shutter counts that are not insane. For roughly the same price (maybe 100-200 euro more) i can also pick up a R6 Mark 1, which makes the 5D Mark IV a really tough sell. Sure the resolution on the R6 is lower, but i dont think that matters much.
Wow that’s a tough choice! Here in the US used R6 mark 1s go for $1500-1700 while 5D mark IVs are going for $600-1000. If given your choice, I would probably go for the R6 with an adapter if you already have a good set of EF lenses.
I just made this choice. Former pro sports shooter who sold all my gear and only used a 1dx V1 and mid level glass for 4 years. Used tow own 5d4,1dx3. After joining r6 fb group I saw all the problems which I was surprised because coming from the eos m lineup I wasn't happy with them but not extremely disappointed as I didn't expect pro level. R6v1 problems :saw that it froze and u need to remove battery and reinsert, broke sd card slots, overheating video etc.(All fixed on r6v2) Considered the R62 for around $1700. I ended up buying used 5d4 with 7k shutter with user 70-200 2.8 V2 is,2x V2 and1.4x teleconverters all for $1800 or the price of just the body of a R62. Choice was easy for me.specially as I get 2 year warranty
Great review, thanks! I recently picked up my 7D with a 70-200 2.8 to shoot my kids’ ice hockey games. It still works well but I’m limited in less well lit venues (ISO 3200 gives so so results), and by the auto focus. Do you think the 5D IV would be a good improvement on those metrics? Full frame sensor and better overall image quality would obviously be nice as well.
It's a great studio camera. Great for landscapes too. I brought it to Europe for our family vacation and it never left the hotel after the 2nd day. I just used the then new Huawei p30 pro. I just didn't want to carry a giant camera with a huge lens and bump into everyone in the subway. . Sure i could have taken hi-res photos of Paris, but i will just be trying to do photography instead of enjoying the trip.
You can use Tornado EOS for enabling C-Log for about 35 Bucks. Also, having this as a b cam for filming stage events, having the 4K Crop can be very useful. Throwing a 70-200 Lens you can get nice close up’s from far away. But yeah, for run and gun the crop and filesizes are bad in 4K. I‘m still using it often to film with. It just works. The camera doesn’t try anything it won’t do. But when for example the DP AF locks, you can count on it. I used a rental r5 for a few shoots and tbh, still getting back to my trusty mk4
I definitely agree that sometimes, the crop can work out in your favor. But for most run and gun applications, i feel like the 1080p is more than passable. I'm a bit astounded that people criticized this camera so much, even for it's DPAF! Saying things like it doesn't recognize faces when you're really far away (sony was admittedly better but when is it a critical difference?). Like I mentioned, the video AF is still way more reliable than my Fuji XT4 which is wayyyy newer.
@@KenCreates Yup, had the mk4 and an r5 both on a gimbal filming the same stage, i'd the feeling that the mk4 worked more reliable in about everything. wifi was more stable, dpaf was on point, etc. the r5 had problems here and there, where the mk4 did less, but as you said, more reliable.
the R6ii, i dont own either but the 5div has terrible video, it has a 1.74x crop, while the r6ii is a much more video-centric camera if youre going to shoot hybrid. 5div is only better for stills resolution, the R6ii has a lot more features. If you can afford an r6ii, go for it
Definitely appreciate this video. I want to upgrade to the 5D Mark IV. I’ll be moving from a Rebel T7. I want a mirrored also but want this professional work horse first.
I upgraded from my Rebel T7 to the 5D IV a couple of weeks ago, and it's been awesome! It's a night and day difference in terms of overall usability and build quality. I had the choice between buying an EOS R and the 5D but decided to not jump into the mirrorless ecosystem. The EOS R to me feels like an experimental build from Canon, it contains lots of features and quirks that were yet to be refined at the time and feel somewhat clunky (with reason obviously, as it was the first proper mirrorless from Canon…). Also, there are lots and lots of very good EF lenses on the market (sure RF is great and all but unless you're shooting at a very professional level do you really need those improvements?), and for some (it's more of a personal choice) the optical viewfinder feels better than an EVF (although in the newer models the EVF's are really good). Overall, I think if you find yourself a great deal, you can't go wrong with this camera.
@@deion5947 Glad I could help! I'm still in the hobbyist territory, as I don't make much money from photography, but I mainly shoot events and real estate. I've shot a couple of football matches (small football fields), a couple of concerts and some real estate (photo and video in this case). I would also recommend looking at the R6, just in case, as I've seen that in some countries, it's price (along with an adapter) almost matches the one of the 5D IV (which is not the case where I live, there's a massive difference). You do get a drop in resolution compared to the 5D, from 30 to 20 megapixels. And sure, the body doesn't have the same bulky and rigid feel to it, but the massively upgraded AF system, the dual SD card slots (opposed to the SD + CF in the 5D) and the extra video capabilities might very well be worth it. I know you didn't ask, and I apologize is this is too much, but as for my personal opinion, I would only go for the R6 if the price was rather close to the 5D. The extra megapixels come in quite useful for cropping, and my hands still prefer the bulkiness of the bigger body. And with more and more mirrorless bodies coming out, I think there's plenty of time to upgrade later down the line when things get more refined and more affordable. Whichever option you end up going with, rest assured that it will be light years better than the T7.
I have been shooting with 5D cameras since the first model was released. I also started with Fuji X-PRO as my first mirrorless. It took quite long for mirrorless became really better than DSLR cameras. I have a full set of Canon L-lenses and roughly the same for Fuji. I most say I like to shoot with the 5D MIKV because I am so used to 5D cameras. However the Fuji X-T5 can do many things better than the 5D. Often now I use lenses like 70-200/2.8 IS mark II and putting it on may Fuji with the Ringer version 3 adapter. I get the aperture ring where I want it and get a 105-300/2.8 IS lens that works together with the IBIS in the camera. I also only have to use the filet part of the lens with APS-C. I sometimes even use the old Fuji X-20 as a walk around camera. Even that one can produce results that impress mobile camera shooters-. When they see some of my pictures they ask what expensive pro camera I have used. Many photographers think that a new camera will give them better pictures. I would say that the camera you really have a lot of experience in will give you the best pictures. Photography is not just gear. It is feeling, creativity and experience that give you better pictures .
