Canon EOS R5 Versus EOS R - Which camera is for you?

  • I used both the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R this summer and fall at weddings, engagement sessions, senior photos, and family sessions. Using them side by side and editing the images all summer, I noticed a lot of the subtle differences between the two cameras. In this video, I show some of the improvements in the R5 in the areas of image quality, high ISO, low light, autofocus, ergonomics, IBIS, and shutter sounds. Every photographer has different needs, so at the end I briefly discuss which camera you should buy also mentioning the Canon EOS R6 and Canon EOS RP.

    Thank you for a fair comparison and thank you for recognizing the value of the EOS R. It has been unfairly overly critized for its imperfections, so much so, that other reviews neglect its strong points and value. So, thank you for your fairness and recognizing the R's value. This was the best comparison video that I’ve seen on RUclips. In years past, I would have bought the R5, but being on a budget, I needed something less expensive. The camera store was out of stock of all R series cameras (a testament to Canon’s popularity), so I decided to pre-order the R. Your video made me feel so much better about my choice. Thank you!

    Best comparison on RUclips! I’ve tried out many cameras in the past a7iii, a6400, and the rp. I fell in love with the little rp but just wanted a few minor upgrades. I’ve been considering purchasing the R as I think it will fit all of my needs and then some, being a beginner. You’re video truly showcased everything to love on the R. Thank you.

    Thanks, Shane! R photographer shooter here, having owned it for over a year. Of course the new stuff that comes along makes improvements, but I'm always baffled by the subsequent marginalization of the tech that came before (I can understand why 4k and slo-mo videographers get starry-eyed about the newest release.). So, while some are busy keeping up with new, and God bless 'em if they can afford to do that, I'm back here taking photos I love. The picture is the thing!

    Thanks for a fair review of these cameras. I love my R!!! I don’t do sports or weddings. I do portraits and landscapes. For my use, it’s the best value with the highest resolution. The higher resolution keeps me from going to the R6, and the huge price jump keeps me from going to the R5. So, for the foreseeable future, I’ll stay with my lovely R!!!

    Great video, as always. Ever since the Canon 5D Mk4 I've been hoping Canon would *allow us to save our customization/configurations/presets to a card* (or better yet save/load with the Canon Connect app since our phones are usually with us). I shoot with two bodies and after experiencing the incremental increase of customization options when setting up two 5D Mk4 bodies, two EOS R bodies, and now two EOS R5 bodies I really wish we could save/load settings. This is *available on the 1D-series* but we really need Canon to enable it for the R-series because of how extremely customizable they are. There is even more customization available in the EOS R5 than on the EOS R and we can expect that trend of complexity to continue with each future body.
    Imagine borrowing an R-series body from a friend but it's configured how they use it and you use yours differently. Or imagine renting a body as a backup/replacement and you need to spend a good 30-40 minutes *without getting interrupted* to copy your settings from one body to another, hopefully not missing a setting that you'll find out later when you need it the most.
    This has been on my ever-growing *CANON WISH LIST* since the 5D Mk4 and I would love to see this simple request become a reality.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 года назад +6

      100% YES. Every time I send my camera into CPS, or add another body, I know I am going to have to spend the evening re-setting it all up. And I always miss something.

    Thanks for the vid. I got a R couple weeks ago and few things that I don’t like. The EVF is lagging big time when shooting moving subject. I didn’t realize it’s that bad. AF won get focus when the subject is far. Lens with IS is always on when the camera is on. It will drain the battery faster. I hope R5 solved these problems.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 года назад

      Bummer. Yeah there is a significant price difference between the two, but there is a reason why. The R was a good first step for Canon into mirrorless and you can take some great photos with it, but the R5 is on a whole other level. The R6 is amazing too just it doesn't have the high resolution. All the best!

    However I think this is also going to be my setup. I already have the r and I am in Love with it.
    I saw a Jessica Kobesi video when she was using a canon dslr 5div and this other guy was using an rp. He blew Jessica out of the water. There was no competition there. She was trying to figure out lighting etc - he was done. I immediately got an EOSR. That camera latches onto my eye like a gazelle. Love it - I need a second body to replace my 5d3. Shane, I respect your opinion and pose a question about these two cameras, and my debate about a purchase:
    1. I am not a pro, and I'm looking for a travel camera, one to casually take pics when I'm in NYC, to take pics for promotional Yoga material (I'm a teacher), and I would describe myself as a entry level shooter who is ONLY interested in taking high quality STILLS. Have no interest in video features.
    2. My interests in photo taking; travel such as landscape, portraits, street photography, Yoga promo materials, long exposed shots, nighttime cool shots and that's about it.
    3. Money isn't necessarily an issue, but I can obviously benefit by purchasing a EOS R and a RF lens such as 24-70, and it'll be same cost as just the Eos R5 body.
    WILL I be happy 2-3 years from now if I buy the EOS R, get a lens, and save $ and will I be happy with the image quality and output? Or, should I just wait, save and just head first into the r5? I would love your insight.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 года назад +1

      Hello Victor! Great question. For the types of shooting you are doing, you could save a lot of money and get the R and then have a great lens in the 24-70. The IQ is great on the R .I think if were you that's where I would start. As cheap as the R is right now, if you decide it is lacking, you can always sell it and buy the R5 later. Just my 2 cents. Hope that helps!

    amazing video, well done.
    A lot of comparisons I've seen agree the EOS R files do seem to have a little more 'pop' and the R5 files are a bit 'flatter' (and as someone doing their research before upgrading, its my perception too). Even the videos in the IBIS test with the young boy seem more '3D' on the EOS R. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 года назад +1

      Great observation! I think it is something you might notice if you are seeing them side by side, but if you just have one camera you wouldn't notice it. The R5 files have more dynamic range and a little more ability to lift shadows so though they initially might have less pop, you can always add it in post. I would rather have them start flat and add pop later. But it really is very subtle. Hope that helps! Well done to do your research!

I was so confident in the eye detection AF that I was not paying attention but the eye AF was not working properly when I went vertical so I missed focus on some important images. This video was nice to watch. I need your opinion. I want to start shooting events. For budget reasons (since I am starting) I think the EOS R is the one that is more ideal for my budget, the only thing that concerns me is the autofocus in poor light conditions since a lot of events like weddings and 15 añeras have those type of low light situations at some point. How did you get around that autofocus limitation with the EOS R in low light situations? I hope you can give me and opinion based on your experience.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 года назад

      Hello! Fun that you want to start shooing events! Though the R isn't as good in low light focusing situation, it is still good and will do just fine for you if you are starting out! And if needed, you can always flip it to manual focus, press the magnify button to zoom into 10X zoom, and then manually focus. Best of luck in your decision!

    I was shooting on an R and RP for a while, then sold the RP for a second R because a sweet deal came my way and I couldn't pass it up. This happened just days before the release of the R5 and R6, but I had no interest in those cameras because the specs on both are either so negligibly "better" than my R (10 bit vs 8 bit video means almost nothing to my work), or so wildly "better" than my R (8k means absolutely nothing to my work), that they didn't matter to me. However, I borrowed an R5 for a few weeks and only then realized that I had been FIGHTING with my RP and R's functionality. I never fully realized it because I guess subconsciously I thought my complaining about the micro frustrations with the R and RP probably meant user error, but my 5Diii felt like a part of my hand and I could quickly spray and pray for some hail marry shots without looking and usually get them, however the RP and R require looking at the camera, getting in to menus, and using both hands to do soooo much stuff, not to mention waiting even a second for the camera to snap to attention at times. With the added buttons and programmable features to these new (old, because the 5D had them!) buttons (like customizing focusing modes to different back buttons) I can grab a single point in one-shot or throw the Hail Mary tracking in servo without even glancing at the camera-- no toggling, no menus, no checking anything, no looking at the camera at all. I'm days away from buying an R6 and have been watching tons of R5/R6 reviews to see who else cares about what I care about. Your video came closest to addressing the issue, and I applaud you for being so practical and realistic with the review. In a controlled environment where I have the luxury of looking through menus the R is a phenomenal camera, but it's increasingly frustrating to use in real world situations where you need the camera to just BE READY and respond as quickly as your muscle memory does.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 года назад

      Hello Andrew! You absolutely nailed it. The R6/R5 ergonomics and usability are on a whole other level than the R/RP. It is the sum of 1,000 little changes. It quickly becomes a native controller that you doesn't get in your way of perfectly timing the shot. So intuitive and natural. Thanks so much for the kind comment and have fun shooting with it when it comes!
