    I have 2 R, and 2 RP as my back up cameras, and I can tell you from 2 years of shooting with them. Don’t get too hung up on mega pixels. All 4 of the current cameras in canons full frame mirrorless line take fantastic photos. And the r and rp are MUCH cheaper, meaning you can invest more into your glass (glass will make a bigger difference in your product)
    Great video though!

    I owned the R and have since upgraded to the R5, honestly for the medium level pro price ($$$) I paid, I will not consider trading or upgrading for many many years. This camera is a beast, best machine I have ever used, period! But lets be honest, I and most users, have never had any person or governing body grade or critique their work the way we see here on RUclips. I love these compare videos too, but for most users getting focus right is the main criteria.

If and when I get into it more I can upgrade to the 5 or 6 or what there is at the time and take my glass with me. If not, I'll have a nice setup to stay at the current level. WIN, WIN.

  • @svhartuk

    After thinking about it, it seems to me that Canon made each of them to be the mirrorless step ups for the different level DSLRs. Like the Eos RP is the step up for Aps-c DSLRs, the Eos R is the step up for the 6Ds, the Eos R6 is the step up for the 5Ds, and then the Eos R5 is the step up for the 1DXs.

    • @Mariogutcha
      @Mariogutcha 3 года назад +4

      I'm not quite sure about the equivalencies, as Canon seems to care a lot about the numbering of its cameras. The EOS R was more like Canon's entry point into the mirrorless camera market. The R6 is like the 6D and the R5 is equivalent to the 5D series. This makes sense considering that Canon has announced the release of the new EOS R3 and even a mind-blowing R1 is rumored to be on development.

    All great cameras and the R6 looks to be an excellent choice............if only the sensor was around 30mp. I do like to crop sometimes and this would really reduce the pixel count. Not sure why they chose to drop to 20mp but so many people are hesitating because of this.

    • @-WhizzBang-
      @-WhizzBang- 3 года назад +5

      Those who hesitate because of the 20 mp need to educate themselves. It is a very high quality sensor. Put it this way, the 20mp sensor in the R6 is better than the 32.5 mp sensor in the 90D and the 30mp in the R!

    • @godz2928
      @godz2928 2 года назад

      Yes its only 20 megapixels but because the auto focus is sooo good that you can focus on your composition hence not cropping too much…and not cropping at all…

    • @NJM1948
      @NJM1948 2 года назад

      @@godz2928 Not really the point - yes it is a very good sensor, but so are a lot of others. The simple fact is that whatever the performance of the auto focus etc, there are only 20mp and it is not enough if you need to crop. Losing pixels by cropping - and limiting the print size dramatically - is the issue....not the auto focus or other nicetiies about the sensor

      @NJM1948 2 года назад

      @@Jajajajanee What I meant was....I a m well aware of your basic suggestion about better reach or moving closer....but that is not the point. There are many times when you just cannot get closer and unless you have uber money and prepared to haul around a huge lens, then a lot of amateur photographers are limited to long lenses that cannot reach some subjects and cropping is essential. Also, your comment about 1DX users was a bit naive given that those users will now be using cameras with high resolution sensors. Also, the R5 seems to back up my view. This is aimed more at photogrtaphers whilst the R6 is better for video. My point remains the same. 20mp just won't cut it for people shooting stills who like to, or need to crop. It is a backward step by Canon when you look around at the resolution of the newer cameras.....unless you are a videographer. I've made my point and you have your view. I'm not going to continue going over the same ground that I have explained in my first comment

      The images on the r6 are sharper and much better then the eos r. Megapixels really dont matter unless your doing huge posters. Overall image quality on r6 is way better and i think its worth the down in mega pixels.

    • @slurp3194
      @slurp3194 3 года назад

      @Uwe B actually the image quality is significantly better then the r. The r6 and r5 have very similar image quality except for the higher megapixels allows you to blow it up more. But the r6 and r are not even in the same realm of comparison. The r has no stabilization and I think most people shouldnt even bother buying the r and instead jumping up to r6 or going towards sony route.

    • @slurp3194
      @slurp3194 3 года назад +1

      @Uwe B go try an r6 and compare it to the r you will see there is a huge difference. Its no joke I know many wedding photographers who shoot on r6 and they previously had the r. The experience on the r6 is a world of a difference, the stabilization the controls. The autofocus reliability and how fast you can shot. The images are significantly sharper. Unless your are printing banners or shooting for billboards lol no reason to look at resolution in full-frame camera. And also the dual card slots are a must-have. If we get into video its over. I think having the ability to get reliable 4k video nowadays can be useful.

I’ve made 24x36 inch prints that were very good from a 5D mkII with a 20 megapixel sensor when viewed from the appropriate distance. Was a canon shooter for years, then picked up a Sony 6400 for video - very nice and capable, but don't 'love' the menu structure or the hand feel as It's small for longer shoots, plus have a bunch of older canon lenses, so looking at the R6 for my next unit - would probably have looked at the Blackmagic 6K as it's far less very capable, and there's lens flexibility, But I do a lot of still photography as well. One question I do have is whether the R6 heats up or has any limitation for video - the little 6400 records forever, but wondering if there are any similar issues? Anyway, way too long story somewhat shorter - TERRIFIC review - very helpful, and much appreciated! - cheers!

    I know this video is a year old or so now. I, a few months ago, got the R mostly due to lower cost and couldn't justify the higher for the R6 - I'm glad I did as I use the top screen a lot!
    If I was ever going to upgrade I would go for the R5 really, as it just gives me more of everything.
    I'd even still look at keeping the R, as it's very very very capable at the landscape or street photography, but does (as far as I've read) lag behind the R5 and R6 in low light. And the R is not great for action (I really want to look to get into car racing photography).
    Interestingly, and I know the video was made before them (and I bought my R before), if I was going to get a camera now I would probably look at the R7 over the R and go for RF lenses over the RF-S. I know you get a crop, but investment in the future n all? It would give me the best of both worlds really... Just with the crop top bare in mind.
    That said, I love my R. And while it is my first full sized camera I've had, the lack of dial on the back isn't a down side at all. But, I can see how it changes the workflow for people. It's a super capable camera, and I think it was the perfect way to get into full sized cameras. Sure I'm now spoilt by the accuracy of the mirrorless and being able to see the exposure of your shot right away, where you can't or much less accurately with a DSLR, but I still think it means I wouldn't rely on better AF and get used to instant and perfect results then wouldn't be able to go back (think with driving, if you learn in a car which can almost drive itself, then get a 25 year old car as your first one). If that makes sense...

    • @3-piece129
      @3-piece129 2 года назад +1

      I upgraded from the 80d to the R6 and the difference is very noticeable. I shoot sports and I loved my 80d since 2016 and took it as a backup to a softball game recently. The pictures were soft compared to the R6. The dynamic range capabilities while shooting in low-lit hs gyms is very helpful in the R6. I've never shot with the R or RP, I'm sure they're great cameras, but the i think the R6 has better all-around capabilities. The toggle stick itself is very helpful. If possible save up for the R6. Plus Canon constantly upgrades the firmware to make it better but i never see upgrades to the R or RP which should tell you something. Good luck on your next camera!

I’ll probably look into that in the near future but the R6 is the perfect Goldilocks camera to track moving birds really well! Love it! Eye detection isn’t perfect, but I set up duel back button AF so I can quickly get back on target if eye detection fails. It works great for me though overall.

      Yep 👍 In 1-point mode, scrolling the dials moves the point to any of 143 positions (an 13 x 11 array). Nudging the four-way controller moves on a finer 87 x 65 position grid, to give access to the full 5655 points. This second method is a lot slower, so may be better for fine-tuning that initial point selection.

      I personally haven’t used a 90D, but I have a 70D and an Eos R. In continuous autofocus, the eos R shoots at closer to 3fps meaning you’ll miss a lot of shots. That being said, even cropped in at 1.6x it’s way way sharper than my 70d.
      I’ve heard amazing things about the 90d. Especially for wildlife. If that’s going to be the exclusive reason you’re shooting, I’d go 90d. The eos R would probably be better as an all around camera though.
