    SOLID Comparison. Got the R and the R6 and confirmed that we should be using the R for studio product photography as it is sharper when I looked at your portrait shots.

    I have had the R and now shooting with the R5 and R6. I love that the R has the best color all around with out editing. I sometimes find myself missing it when shooting in natural light.

    The R is a fantastic camera. I love the colors and always had great results, so much so that I struggled when using an R6 or R5 because of the differences. It didn't help that Adobe didn't have camera-matching profiles for the R6 or R5 until relatively recently. The profiles from Color Fidelity helped immensely, but ultimately I switched to Capture One and use the ProStandard camera-matching profiles for superb results.

    I thought the R looked better than the R5 and R6. All I have is a decade old used Rebel so it was a neat video for me to see three expensive cameras compared with each other at the same time. With the huge price gaps between the three and the R's low MP saving hard drive space, the R would certainly be my first choice.

    I did a lot of research when I wanted to upgrade to full frame from my 250D, I’m into Astrophotography and Aviation. I spent many, many hours checking out the specs, reviews, samples and importantly prices. I looked at the 6D, 6Dmkii, 5D mk iv, then all the R range. I kept looking at the R and I’m very glad I went for it. The complaints about it were almost all utter nonsense. Complaints about the Touch Bar are just ridiculous, you can turn it off and it’s really not that bad anyway. Complaints about the autofocus were also seemingly based on personal issues, not the actual camera. Considering the price difference, particularly used, I was torn between the 6D mk ii and the R, went for the R and am VERY happy.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  2 года назад

      Totally agree regarding the R. It is an excellent camera with very few flaws for photography in particular. Thank you for watching!

    • @77dris
      @77dris Год назад +1

      The only complaint I had about the R was that the images had banding/pattern noise in the shadows when lifted (or shot at higher ISOs). The 5D IV - which supposedly had the same sensor - did not have this issue at all so I was a bit let down as I really push and pull files. The 5D IV had the best image quality of any camera I ever shot.

    The R crushed it. Especially when you panned out of the portrait you can see the color from the R is way more accurate. I have the R and R5c. Magenta is too strong on R5 and R6. Good stuff.

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 2 года назад

      Interestingly the R is considered less accurate vs the R5 and R6, which have a more clean look. In the end that would be actual better for developing the images afterwards.

    I love the R. People get too hung up on the touch bar. It's a very good camera. Yes, it's easy to prefer the R5/R6 slightly warmer tones, but which is actually more natural?

      It's not so much I didn't like the touch bar, I just missed the joystick. Its true the Rs colours are probably closer to the models natural skin tone. I was impressed with the R all around.

    • @eivinstens6091
      @eivinstens6091 2 года назад

      @@JamesReader For me the touch bar seems to be a redundant feature. I'm struggling to find a good use for it. I'd go for a joystick, even though I really like using the touch screen to move the AF point around. I have it assigned to ISO when I'm using an EF lens. Otherwise I'm using the control ring on the RF-lenses for that. Let's wish for an R mk2 with a joystick instead. Regarding skin tones, I'm probably more likely to add warmth to a portrait, than doing the opposite, so for me it's a good thing that the R is a bit on the cold/neutral side.

    Great video. I was surprised with the color differences between the r5/r6 and r. I'm an old school Canon shooter, so I'm used to that red/magenta cast on skin tones. I preferred the skin tones on the R actually. I have the R6 and loving it, but the R held its own.

    I had to come check some more of your videos out because they are SO GOOD!
    Again, I have all 3 of these cameras although, interestingly, the R (actually RP) was my most recent purchase.
    Here are my 2 cents.
    I use the 6 the majority of the time. The images are absolutely gorgeous and I love that my files are manageable sizes. Regardless, I have sold images that have been blown up to HUGE sizes with zero issues.
    I love the 6 so much that I just sold it and preordered the MK II.
    Now, the 5 is obviously a beautiful camera and I use this on detail shots and portraits. It is always my “second” camera for special images at events. A lot of times, at weddings, I will have a prime attached to the 5.
    Now, the R. It was never, ever on my radar. My 19 year old son went to Mt. Everest this year as well as Dubai and Singapore and he wanted to take my 6. I was like “hell no!” So, I went and bought him the “cheap” R to use with my “travel” lens, the 24-105L and sent him on his way.
    When he returned, I popped his photos into LR and was shocked! He took absolutely stunning images with that little baby. I have blown several up into fairly large prints. I thought his images were so good that I took the same setup plus the tiny nifty fifty to Greece and didn’t regret my much lighter than normal decision in the slightest.
    Damn good camera.
    IMO, if you can only afford the R, you will not be disappointed. It is small and mighty. If you are debating between the 6 and 5, get the new 6 coming out. It is more well rounded imo. If you have the cash and want portrait specific or are making money on landscapes, get the 5. The 6 still wins though.

      Thank you so much for watching Rachael, and I appreciate such an awesome comment. I've also pre-ordered the MK II, I think Canon knocked it out of the park in terms of releasing an incredibly well rounded camera. People definitely sleep on the R, it's the sweet spot for me in terms of resolution and file size.

    Thank you for sharing the raw files! I was pretty much stunned how much more REAL the R6 files (both natural light and studio portrait) look compared to the R and R5, both of which look flat in comparison. The R6 portraits have depth and tonal integrity, while the R and R5 look flat and not so real in comparison. The R6 appears to be the closest to how the 5D classic presents people, of course, with so much better low ISO and a lot more. (For a lot more, as well... ; ) You have definitively rearranged my long term camera goals!

The bar is toggled on/off with the lock button on top of the camera. My control ring is used for ISO adjustment so it is easy and quick to get the optimum exposure using the histogram and EV bar. This is a very good review. Thank you. The only reason I moved from the EOSR to the R6 is the fps that is too low on the EOS R especially in continuous autofocus. What I regret is the 32 M pixels.... 20 is a bit limited for the R6 and 45 makes too heavy file on the R5..... so I wait for another future alternative....

    For the money, the R is a great camera. it doe lack some of the features of the R6/R5 but if you don't care about those features (mainly IBIS and a second card slot) the R can be a great value. Looking at the comparison at 8:49 there isn't much difference, although I will say that the R5/R6 are slightly (ever so slightly) less grainy, and their images appear a bit more crisp, but this is primarily when zoomed in, and likely not visible from viewing distances. (If you compare the text on the lens, I feel they get progressive sharper from right to left). But again, at around $1800 USD the R is still a capable camera to buy today if you want save some money and can live with its limitations.

    I had the R and it was very fun to use and the image quality was Ok if you didn't push/pull files or shoot at really high ISOs. But it was a letdown from my 5D IV which produced much cleaner images and the files were so robust, especially shadow recovery. The R would exhibit shadow banding/pattern noise that the 5D IV never had. Most average people may not notice this but I sure did (and I tried three R copies). I know Tony Northrup showed this exact problem when compared to the 5D IV. I wonder if the R5 and R6 are better in this regard because there seems to be something about mirrorless cameras that causes this problem (I think the on sensor AF might be the problem). I know the Nikon z7 had this issue too when the D850 did not.

      Isn't banding appeared with electronic shutter? And dissapears with mechanical? When I saw first RAW files from R series on DXO Photo I recognised more organised groups of pixels colected in lines. It never happend before even on 5DsR. Is it question of Cr3 Raw? It looks similar to jpgs from i.e. Lumia 950XL that I really like but takes absolutely ugly jpgs and only raw files are usefull.

    If it doesn’t move fast, like portraits and landscapes the R is fine. I have one. If the subject moves quickly the R6 is another level. I have one. 20 mps in fine because no one but a photographer looks at large prints with a magnifying glass. If you want to make resolution comparisons make three 20x30 prints and get back 8 to 10 ft. and compare them. Then you can see the real world difference.

    I have the R and R7. For me, corect auto white balance is utmost priority. I do landscape and i never remember what the sand on the beach looked like in New Zealand a year ago or even a month ago. The R has more of an magenta tint than R7 (everyone else says that its the other way around). R7 gives more yellowish (warmer) tint. The R does better with rhe snow shots. My Iphone 11 has a much better auto white balance and i refer to it fir accuracy. Which Canon camera in your opinion has the most consistent and correct auto white balance?

    Nice comparison. I’m shooting Sony currently and heavily invested in that system but I can really appreciate how nice Canon cameras are. I agree that their ergonomics are great. Lenses are great too and image quality as well. Maybe someday I’ll be a Canon shooter too but pretty happy for now.

    Great video! I’ve had the R for over 3 years and have the R5 as well. I use both when I need to do video with the R5 and stills with the R. The R still rocks on stills and I’ve never had a bad card issue. That being said I like having the 2 card slot safety net. Canon was cheap and lazy not to have made the R with 2 card slots and I know it really hurt the R’s sales potential for this one reason.

      I have never known anyone who has had an SD card failure. I have known a couple who have had CF card failures years ago, but not an SD one. I have heard of SD card failures but once again, no one that have known and can vouch for.

    • @NABR62
      @NABR62 Год назад

      @@markburns993 I agree with you, I’ve never had an SD card failure. That doesn’t change the fact that Canon got lazy on their first full frame competitive mirrorless camera. It lacked basic features that were on the 5D iv and 80D.
      Like I said, I still use my R for photos and R5 for video at events. But I missed features that were even on my 80D.

    Hi James did you or Do you shoot in C-RAW for stills ? That should bring the file sizes down….. Thanks 😊 Surprised how well he R did in non action stills photography. I’m thinking an extension grip on the R might make handling the big Canon primes easier. Your thoughts ? Great comparison.

    So the 1DX has 18 mp and it seems to be fine to crop a little. I can’t see why the r6 would lacking if the 1DX does fine, unless you crop way too much. 24 mp is more than enough and has been proven in various models in Sony cameras. The 45 mp has been proven to overkill in sports due the file sizes.

    Thank You and especially to Your model for patience. Unfortunately I was unable to open video files from R6/6 in finder /cause downgraded to Mojave?/ Unfortunately 6D2 has IPB video mode that produce quite awfull quality in dark area or low light so I'm looking for new more universal body and R is intersting choice. Difference between R5 and R is not so obvious. R color is more natural? for me. And when I turned off all denoise, sharpening, luminance slider to off. images from R5 and R looks quite similar. R5 is bigger. Maybe it is a question of physical lens resolution limitation that produce the similar quality on 30 and 45Mpx sensors.
    Compromises, compromises 😫😉

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад

      The R is a great choice for photography, I agree that the colours are a little more natural than the R5/R6. However video side is not so great. Have you considered the new R8? I’m testing it right now and so far very pleased with the results as long as you don’t mind the smaller body.

    • @msStoDwa
      @msStoDwa Год назад

      @@JamesReader I consider R8 but 1st is a resolution downgrade and since I use 5dsR there is no other body that can beat its quality. It takes every line from even weakest lens and shows all the best from best lenses. There is also downgrade from 6d2 that I really like. The only reason to look for new camera is video quality. Sometimes I need something better than phone. IPB from 6d2 is not great. I tried 5DsR FHD video and looks absolutely great but I miss touch screen of 6D2 for tap to focus option, swivel screen or better object tracking. 5DsR fights with focus tracking even with 24-105L IS lens. It is great for static movies. I don't want to carry 2 bodies, one for stills 2nd just in case? So R compare to R5 looks very attractive. And the price compare to R8 is almost 30-50% lower. Battery is also the same. Body size of R8 is great. Similar to 250D or RP. great for traveling. Full size 4K 60p etc but 6Mpx less it makes the difference, not in file size but information taken from lens to sensor. From my experience 26Mpx and 50Mpx sensor does not produce the same quality from 20Mpx resolution lens. 26Mpx sensor will record ~16Mpx from lens resolution but 30 or 50Mpx sensor will record every line.

    Makes you wonder if they even developed the R while getting feedback from their customers. Huge blunder for them to move buttons around. AF button placement , lack of scroll wheel and joystick. Don't try to fix something that isn't broken unless you want to break it only to fix it later on. Reminds me of what Apple likes to do.

  •  2 года назад

    Dear James,
    thanks for your RAW Files and not only this nice video. Please correct me if I´m wrong, but I think you made a little mistake, when you compared the R5 with the R6 images. I imported your files in Lightroom and saw, that you used two different picture profiles on your cameras. Picture profile "Standard" on one and picture proflile "Neutral" on the other camera. That makes, as far as I know, a differance in how the camera handles color internally. After I changed both picture profiles in Lightroom, so that they match, and used the exact color temperature und tint, I got a pretty close final result. In my opinion this is especially true for the pictures made with flash in the studio. I dont own a R5, so I am not able to test it myself. Please keep up with your work, I like your style of video creation!
    Greetings

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  2 года назад +1

      Hi Björn, thank you for watching! You're correct, however all the images shown in the video are the RAW files where I have followed all the same steps as you in post by matching them all to each camera's "Faithful" colour profile as well as matching up white balance all in Lightroom also.

    •  2 года назад

      @@JamesReader Many thanks for the fast reply! The studio image of the R6 in your video has definitely a different color. So everything you say in the video makes sense. But when I open your RAW files, they open with a different color temperature and picture profile. I know that this is not a big deal, because as you say, you can match the pictures later in post easily. But I would really love to know, if the R6 and R5, used with the identical picture profile and manual color settings (e.g. 6000K), still have that different look? I’m really not sure about that! On my self calibrated EIZO Monitor, they look pretty similar with the identical settings, so maybe it is possible to match them in camera? I'm just asking so persistently because I want to know if the R6 can effortless work as a backup for the R5, without correcting color in every picture in post? Thanks so much.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  2 года назад +1

      @ I think if you matched up the in camera settings (WB and picture profile) it would definitely speed up matching in post. I can re-assure you the R6 is a great backup to the R5, in no time you will be able to match them in post by eye or put together a base preset to save time that has them extremely close, if not identical. I regularly use them both at shoots and have no trouble matching, even with different lenses which can also have a surprising effect on colour!

    I have been shooting with single-slot memory card cameras for twenty years and I have never, and I stress never, had any problems. Never. This obsession with the lack of a second slot seems exaggerated to me, more a question of marketing than of real necessity. Of course, in some areas the second slot can be useful or even necessary but let's not make it a reason to discard cameras that do their job in an excellent way at 100%. And if you don't agree, let's start throwing away all single-slot cameras that have made photography history. I love my 6D that has never failed a shot since 2015, still giving me top-level results today.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  2 года назад

      Hi Vincent - thanks for watching! You're totally right, I have yet to have any situations where I have lost data, I also regularly shoot with just one card in my cameras that have dual card slots. However if I was on a paid gig, I certainly would be glad of the backup, no matter how unlikely any failure is. I just think that at it's price point there's no reason the R shouldn't have had dual card slots. I've owned Lumix S5, S1, Fuji X-T4 at a similar price range and all had the dual slots.
