Canon R6 Mark II vs R6 - Not worth the upgrade? Portrait/Landscape/Video Comparison (Free RAW Files)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 июл 2024
- Does the R6 MKII make sense as an upgrade for an existing R6 owner? I try to find out in todays video by comparing image quality, dynamic range and high ISO performance. I also put the MKII and the R6 head to head for video to see which one comes out on top.

Have seen a lot of comparison videos on these two cameras. This is by far the best. So comprehensive and straight to the point no fluff. Earned a subscriber keep going.
Thank you for the kind words Drewski!
Finally a video comparing the colors and image quality on the R6 & R6 2
Thank you so much James! This is the best real life comparison between the R6 and R6 Mk II that I have seen to date. You've gone straight to the main point for the side by side between the bodies. Also, the zip you included to download all the RAW and video examples is tremendously helpful.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Really glad the video and files helped!
@@JamesReader I shared the llink in the group Canonistas argentinos I manage (7K members)
@@diegoeidelman that’s awesome! Thank you! I’ll check out the group
Great comparison. This is the video I’ve been waiting for. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice work on this comparison video! Particularly curious about this as a happy R6 user. Love the unlimited record time and detail improvement in video. Looks like the color balance is terrific, as I have sometimes been surprised by the extra 'warmth' of the original R6.
LANGUE FRANÇAISE EST PRÉFÉRABLE.

Absolutely the best comparison on RUclips !! Detailed practical and spot on !! I mostly use my R6 for wedding videography and I’m keen to upgrade for mark II !! Cheers mate !
Thank you so much! You'll love the MKII, some great video upgrades especially for long form shooters.
@@JamesReader the only thing I would like to ask is Auto Focus performance in low light / dark situations with RF lenses comparing to R6 as mine original R6 had extreme difficulties to track focus on old dark barns specially in the evening during party.
Thanks a lot James for putting all the effort in this one, it's exactly what I was waiting for, excellent! You're the first youtuber with a thorough, full-circle stills / video comparison of these two. Given the R6II's current European price tag, and as I only shoot relatively short videos at only 25p, I'll stay with my R6 for now. The R6II's unlimited recording time, combined with less overheating tendencies, seems the biggest advantage over the base model. I'd expect Canon to finally remove the 30min recording limit on the original R5 and R6 via firmware one day, though.
Thank you for the kind words as always Tom, I really appreciate it. You're right to stick with the R6, I have my fingers crossed for you they remove that annoying recording limit soon!
nope, R6 will remain artificially crippled with both software 'overheating' and 30 min cut off timers. I would love to know how they extended the battery performance and why they are not doing it for R6?
@@CZOV Either new Silicon with smaller structures, or more efficient code I guess...
is there still 30 min recording limit at the r6?
@@getwetsoon unfortunately so
Great job on this video! I have had my EOS-R for 3 years and sold it for a good price and was waiting on the R6 mkii and hopefully it will be in stock next week at B&H. I cant wait to get my hands on it. Again loved your comparison video well done.
I upgraded to the R6Mii because I do a lot of video work and the quality of life imporvement on the video aspects is what made me upgrade. I also love the ability to just connect my camera as a webcam, using the UVC protocall. I no longer need to use the EOS Webcam utility that seemed never to work for me anyway. This has been a game changer for me and I have only had the camera for about 2 weeks now.
How has it held up???
Fantastic review! And the quality of your video is incredible. Also, thank you so much for the RAWs. I'm considering upgrading to one of these cameras from my canon 6D, but I was a bit worried about how it would change my editing since I've heard a lot of complaints from other photographers about their struggle with that. It was helpful to play around with those images to see how much it would change my work flow.
Thank you for watching Sarah, really glad to hear the files helped!
What kind of struggle ?
Thanks! I upgraded! Since I live in a tropical island, the overheating is a true issue in my R6. I wanted the unlimited time recording as well. Now my beloved R6 is for sale. Great video! Please keep it up!
Thank you! Enjoy the MKII
Love the review thank you. It's direct and on point.
Thanks for the downloadable examples. Very helpful
Really good! ! Thank you James for your amazing video comparison!
Thank you !
Awesome review as usual. Thank you!
Thank you !
I actually like the idea of switching from Photo to video with the flick of a switch quick and easy.
I made the upgrade from the R6 to the R6ii. I had a video shoot yesterday and it was fantastic shooting 4k 24p for more than an hour without having to interrupt my client to reset the recording or worry about overheating.
Pleased to hear you are happy with the MKII!
Agree with the other viewers-great job. Balanced, with evidence shown. Super job. FWIW, I upgraded from an original R, a camera I never was happy using (after decades of Canon DSLRs). The R6/2 is delightful and things are where you expect them to be. Love the stills/video switch.
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. Totally agree, coming from the R, the R6 MKII feels like Canon finally hit their stride and made a very well rounded camera.
Whats wrong with the R?
@@zorydirwai8661 I hated the button layout and fiddling around to get video settings. The silly touch SR was annoying. Image quality was fine.
Thank you for taking the time to educate us. Great comparison between the two cameras. I have to say I'd prefer the R6 Markii review better. Picture quality was not only clearer but it was more natural looking. And you made the point that it doesn't have the overheating issue as the original R6, that in itself is a high selling point. I however would like to know how the R6 Markii holds up in sports photography or fast moving wildlife or simply fast moving subjects for example dancers etc. Again, thank you for your time, much appreciated.
THANK YOU FOR THE SHUTTER SOUND
Thanks for raw-files!
Thanks for making this video! I'll stick to my R6 for sure... Maybe jump to another brand for high megapixels instead of upgrading to an R5... I actually think the video side of the R6 is very overlooked and not get the credit it deserves. Thanks again James!
wow that is super informative!!!! great job
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your valuable experiences and research. I was bit confused. I have 3 Canon bodies. I was bit confused to upgrade to mirrorless. Thanks again for sharing your research.
Thank you for watching, glad to of helped!
Very thorough and well presented review and comparison of the two cameras - have subscribed! I have R5C & R6 and don't really need the R6II but will still buy it mostly for the better video features it will be great not to have that damn 30 mins limit and no overheating in 4k 24p. If I was photographer only i wouldn't bother upgrading
Thank you for watching and subscribing, I really appreciate it. I'm very glad to see the back of the 30 minute recording limit too. Great upgrade for video shooters.
almost 1 year ago I purchased a7iv instead of R6 only because of Mega pixels . But if it was R6ii I would definitely take it. EF lenses are pretty much cheaper here in Bangladesh . Nice video, keep making this type of informative video. Subscribed .
Which is the primary reason Canon felt compelled to rush out a Mark ii, I think! The R6 is a great photographers camera, but so many felt it didn't match up in terms of megapixels. 20 is plenty for most people, but they buy into the hype. Not saying that no one needs more, some do, but seriously, is there that much difference between 20 and 24 other than for marketing purposes? If you consistently make huge prints or crop extensively, get an R5.
I still own the original r6 although I wish the r6 ii was already in the r6 I still absolutely love the image quality on my r6 and quiet happy to hold onto it for years to come! It literally has everything I need and is still super future proof
Thank you James. Recent subscriber as I came across your vlogs in the past week. As a hobbyist R6 user since launch who shoots 100% stills and tends not to crop (definitely not to to 300% - more like 10%) I found the video validated what I thought was the case with a need to change to the R6ii that I should continue to invest in L series RF glass to improve my images. If I was to upgrade it would be the perhaps to the R5 as the stills image difference is more pronounced? I look forward to seeing more of your future content and looking back at your previous videos.
Thank you for the kind words Mark. I think the R5 is the only noticeable "upgrade" you can make on the RF mount from the R6 for photography in terms of pure image quality. Even then the difference really isn't that huge, I have a video comparing the R6 to the R and the R5 and honestly you have to crop significantly to see the benefit, beyond most realistic use cases. Thanks again for checking out the video!
Great work!
I have a RP and I wanted to learn how to color grade and edit video so I can add it to the business. I feel like I took the right steps in getting it. So far so good
Thanks a lot for the video, James! What I was looking for! A detailed review, mainly for photos, is a rarity today. Subscribed to the channel.
I'm thinking of buying a mirrorless camera for my 5D MIV. Haven't decided if R6 Mark II or R5. While I will use for the cityscape and architecture.
PS The model is great!
Thank you for watching Anton! You really can't go wrong with either, but if budget allows, I would always say pick up the R5 as long as you don't need to rely on long form video. Definitely the best photo camera I've had the pleasure of using.
@@JamesReader Thanks for the advice! I don't shoot video. Sometimes it seems that 45 megapixels is too much for me, especially in portraits. I will think!
Great review!
As someone pointed out, for stills there seems to be a difference.
At 1:57 seems like the Mk II captured a bit more of light. The shot from the R6(I) seems more darker.
I would assume its because of the newer sensor, and it would explain why at higer ISO the Mk II retains more detail.
Thank you very much for making this video and specially for providing the RAW files!
eres el mejor, muchas gracias bro...
I read they improved the AA filter which would account for the extra detail. There's not a lot of difference between 20MP and 24MP, but it *IS* a whole new sensor.
Certainly could be it, the more I use the MKII the more I feel it punches above it’s 24mp weight.
@James Reader In some comparisons, it is found that the resolution is higher than what you find on the EOS R with its 30mp thanks to the less aggressive AA filter.
Muchas gracias , gran video
You always have THE best camera comparison videos for Canon mirrorless, not even close.
I was thinking about the dynamic range test in the highlights: I and many others have noticed that the R6 II is about 1/3 stop brighter than the R6 and R5. This may account for the difference in highlight dynamic range if both were shot at the same exact settings.
I've never noticed the whirring sound at all. I wonder if you have uncovered the fact that the R6 II may have a fan?
Your R5/R6/R comparison was one of my favourite videos this year and when I upscaled the R6 files to 45 MP I couldn't tell the difference vs the R5 when zoomed to 100% on a 5K monitor, espcially the portraits. With Enhance in ACR the R6 files actually looked better. So that little bit of resolution bump in the R6 II will definitely come in handy.
I will say I really liked the look of the R5 video. It's almost cinematic looking with its tones and it's a bit more magenta. The skin rolloff looked smoother to me too.
After 18 years shooting Canon as a pro, I sold my last cameras (1D III, 5D IV and R) just before the lockdown. I picked up the R6 II on Monday along with the Sigma Art 50 1.4 and wow, what an astounding combination. I was debating between this and the R5 but the $2000 Canadian price difference (plus more when considering media and card readers) was just too much to justify.
I actually got the R6 Mark II for the same price as the now discounted R6! So it was a no brainer! ($3099 cdn, about $2200 us).
Thanks again for this!
Edit: Do you recommend using in camera noise reduction for video? Or turning it off and doing it in post ?
Thank you for watching Dris, I really appreciate the kind words. Thanks for letting me know about your R6 MKII's handling of highlights, I was driving my self crazy trying to match the exposure to my R6, at the exact same settings the MKII always seemed to be a little more over exposed. I do thinking the whirring could be a fan, sounds a little similar to my C70.
I owned and loved that Sigma lens for a long time, that's a great combo, glad to hear you are liking your MKII. It feels like Canon has made a really refined camera here.
In terms of in camera noise reduction, for a quick turn around I would leave it on, otherwise I'll do it in post as you usually get better results.
Thanks again!
@@JamesReader I posted a link to this video in the Canon Digital Photography Forum. I think a lot of people will like this a lot.
I remember when the R5 and R6 came out and people said they were about 1/3 stop dark compared to the R. I think DXO showed they were also over-reporting the ISO vs reality.
So it seems the Mark II has corrected that.
And yes, with your files if I dial down exposure by about 1/3 it seems to match the R6 files (at least in histograms anyway).
Since the Mark II is apparently weather sealed, I wonder where that fan would blow air. Maybe just around inside the case? The battery life is so much better on the Mark II it's funny that there could be a fan inside also that doesn't impact battery. I suspect there will be teardowns coming real soon but you are the first to ever mention it. I will have to put my ear up to mine to see if I notice now.
Thanks for the NR tip!
@DRIS Does Canon fix the White Balance issue in Canon R6 Mark 2, which found on the original R6 especially in video ? Thanks
@@77dris Thank you so much for sharing the video, I really appreciate the support! It will be interesting to hear if it is indeed a fan, let me know if you hear a similar noise on your MKII. It's certainly the first Canon camera other than the C70 where I can hear a noise like this.
@@JamesReader So I tried but I couldn't hear the whirring (fan) noise. But it's hard for me to find a perfectly quiet place because even my fridge adds some white noise to my place.
Great review, subscribed. Sorry if I missed it but I don’t think you mentioned any differences in rolling shutter. I just received my r6 mk2 and have not extensively compared yet, but my gut is telling me the rolling shutter is better on this than the old r6 and current r5? I don’t normally shoot electronic shutter except on stacked sensors but early some birds in flight shots where I had the shutter on electronic look better than I was expecting after the original r6. Side to side pans on video seem less slanted too. Have you noticed this?
I have one on order…still waiting. Thanks for the inside look.
Hope you get it soon! Thanks for watching.
I currently have a 5D iv and not looking to upgrade for a while but when I do it will be for the R6. The mkii has some good upgrades but they’re aimed at video improvements and as I don’t do video the mki will be fine the extra 4mg will be largely unnoticed 90% of the time.
Hi James
I mainly shoot stills with occasional video. Ive bitten the bullet and bought the R6 MKII as an upgrade to my R6 and what drove that decision is the following:-
a. Better battery life
b.Improved AF (I shoot dogs with their owners and like the auto AF feature as well as studio portraits)
c. In 2023 I intend on increasing my video output and the improvements Canon have made are a real positive step.
Great review and massively helped my decision.
Thank you for watching, really glad to of helped - I think you made the right decision with the MKII, very valid reasons to upgrade and I think you’ll be very happy with it. I’m loving it so far.
I would be interesting to know if the Mkii is any better for dog photography
would love to see a r5 vs r6 mk2 photo comparison as wel! cheers! great video !
Thank you! Will hopefully be doing a comparison between the two in the next few weeks!
My R6 overheated in video mode - have since sold it to upgrade - false colors and no heating issues in the mk II? - those alone are with the upgrade - great vid thank you!
Hi can you make a video with your different setting for sharp pictures with the Canon R6
I've had the R6MII since Early Dec 2022. I think it's a wonderful camera. My only complaint about the camera is the software I use to process the raw files ( ON1photoraw2023) isn't keeping up on the new camera market and I looking for a new photo editing software. Do you have any suggestions that support R6MII profiles. Thank you for this excellent review.
Chanced upon your video while researching the camera to replace my recently sold 5Dmkii. Thank you for those raw files. Although my 5Dmkii could shoot video, over the course of my ownership of it, which is 12 years long, I hardly shot any video..except perhaps the 1st two years. I had originally wanted the R6 as a replacement and added to the equation, the R6mkII. My primary interest are in landscape photography, and occasional event photography. Should I save some money by going R6 and use the savings to get an RF lens..or should I just go R6M2? Thanks!
If you’re not too concerned with long form video then I think the R6 is more than good enough for your needs.
I have the R6 and I don’t feel the need to upgrade after watching this video. I’m a content creator and I mainly film shoot short form content. I don’t need to film over 30 minute videos so the most significant upgrades for video are irrelevant for me. Great video, thank you so much 🙏🏽
Thank you for watching!
Great work, thanks!
Thank you Andrew! 🙏
@@JamesReader I sold my R6 today and order R6 II. I was using it for video with ninja V. now waiting for atomos firmware to be able 6K raw
Great video...many thanks! As for high light comparison I have seen in other videos that mk2 with... identical settings.. give you a brigjter image than mk1. So in your comparison you detect a sort of burned highlights in mk2... but if you conpensate the expositon to make both images identical from the beginning I think you will see no difference at all...
Thank you for watching! I think you're right, MKII seems to expose a little brighter than R6 & R5.
R6 mk ii no overheating problem Big like ❤👌
I already have an Eos r which I use for my photography work. I mostly use sigma lenses and I am a big fan of flash photography. So, I am happy with the image quality the camera produces. But, I also want to get into video work. Hence, I want to upgrade. I am not sure which camera to buy. I live in Australia and price of the r6 is significantly less than that of the mark ii. The markii is going for almost 4000 aud while r6 plus adaptor is 3,102 aud. Also r 5 is 4,500 and it’s offers great photography and video experience. I am so confused about which camera to get for video. Please help me.
If I were in your position I would consider the upcoming R8 or the original R6. The trade offs are the R8 doesn’t have IBIS (doesn’t bother me for video personally) and the R6 does overheat in all modes if you are recording long form content. If you can stretch the budget the R5 is the best photo camera I have ever used, and the video side is very capable and overheating is much improved since release.
One big consideration that I couldn't find here is for action photographers. Has the new sensor/ read speed changed the rolling shutter or image distortion that can be seen in R6 images? For example, a warped golf club caught mid-swing or a distorted football shot mid-air?
I've seen others report there has been an improvement in rolling shutter, unfortunately I never shoot action so seldom have they opportunity to test. In hind sight I could have tested the sensor read out in video. Thank you for watching.
@@JamesReader Great video regardless. Thanks for the reply. Cheers.
Doesn't that have more to do with whether you're using mechanical or electronic shutter?
Great review/comparison.
Thank you!
Can the r6 mk1 shoot in raw video format? I can’t find info anywhere
I do portrait photography. I am switching from dslr to mirrorless should I just go with the R6 Mkii since it’s newer or go with the R6? The price different isn’t drastic
If price isn’t an issue go with the MKII. It’s not a huge improvement for photography but I feel it’s more sensible to start with the newer tech. Can’t go wrong with either though
Great Video. Was espescially interested into the photography part. For me a comparision between Sony A 7 IV and R6 MK ii would be quite interesting, especially color science (skin tones) and eye AF.
Thank you Michael!
Its a dilemma for me between the R6II and the A74, the canon has no crop in 50p, but the Sony has active stabalisation and gyro stabalisation (ive used this - its very handy).
Thanks James, for the effort to put out such a great comparison !
One question maybe you can answer (I’ve scoured the manual and online forums)… On R6II, if you are in photo mode and press the quick record button for a video clip, can you have full control of those video settings ? R6 only goes full auto (poorly controlling iso, aperture, SS & only a basic picture profile, no Clog).
I think on the R5 it would use one of the custom settings from C1/C2/C3.. I think C3? So fully customizable/controllable.
Thank you for watching Nate! Unfortunately it seems to operate much the same as the R6 in that regard, it doesn't seem to be fully controllable other than exposure compensation.
Ohh.. that’s a pity. For those of us wanting to shoot in a true hybrid fashion , very quickly changing from photo to video and back again in fast moving situations .. that doesn’t help. I suppose the left hand photo/video flip switch would be ‘almost’ as quick, albeit with using 2 hands 🤔. A simple firmware update on the R6 (I have 2 of those) would have fixed this and I would already be so happy. But no, Canon Cripple Hammer. 😠. Thanks for the quick reply !
I’m trying to decide between the r6 and the r8 for my 2k budget. I just want a good all round hybrid camera. Not too bothered by the ibis or dual card slots. Should I lean toward either?
If you do it for money, R6. Dual slots are invaluable.
If it's for fun, R8.
Currently have the EOS R & thinking this would be a good upgrade (just wish the MP wasn’t 6M less)
Thanks for the video. I have an r6 ii on test. I can’t work out how to make the eye detect move from one face to another if there are three or four faces in the frame. I use rhe joystick to move the focus point but the eye detect sticks to one face and won’t move. Can you advise? This would happen in group portraits or when there are several actors on a stage and you want one actor not another.
Hmm the joystick should move to another face as long as you are pressing in the direction of the person you want to focus on. It might switch eye first, but then it should focus on the next person in the frame.
Hellon James ,thanks alot for the cool Video,I have a question , if I am willing to do portrait photography ,which camera should I get the canon R5 or the R6 markii especially if my main criteria is the sharpness and colors ?
Hi Ahmed! Both are amazing cameras. I would recommend the R5 for ultimate image quality
I have the same question for portrait photography which do you recommend? R6 or R6ii? I also plan on doing some basketball sports photography but mainly portraits.
Time to upgrade😊
Kolarivision did a teardown of the R6 Mark II this week and apparently it's basically the same internally as the R6... no fan. So I guess the noise may in fact be IBIS (though I wonder why the original didn't make it).
Thanks for the video
It was great as always
Just why you didn't have any comparison about autofocus performance in video mode
For example, the most important question for me about the R6 is the autofocus performance
Thank you for watching Nathan! I didn't notice one being faster or more accurate than the other, but I have to say I always found the R6 to be as good as it gets anyway for my use case, which is never too demanding.
Thanks for the great comparison!
My EOS R's autofocus isnt the best nor am I satisfied with it.
I was wondering if I should get the R6 or the Mk2
R6 secondhand it is!
I had the R. The R6 II autofocus is leagues ahead of it! Got mine this past week!
Thank you for watching, you're gonna love the R6!
Hello☺ thank you for your work! But can’t find compensation between r6 and r6 I in 1080 120fps and also in body image stabilisation. Would be very appreciated if you can make one✨
*r6 vs r6 mark ii
Audio is show on R6 while recording?
Ouch I am adding gear cost of gear 😮. There is a noticeable color on the portrait of the original R6
Some people (I won't call them the "p" word here!) are so obsessed with the latest and greatest that they are constantly upgrading to the point that they never truly learn how to use any of their cameras. Think I'll actually spend some time shooting with my R6 rather than updating it! Very happy with it!
That's great to hear. I'm finally upgrading to an R6 today, from my 7D mkii I bought new back in mid-2015. Spending money on good glass usually has a better ROI, but it gets to a point when you need to upgrade the body. 8 years later it's time to upgrade the body 😅
@@BenDunlop out of curiosity did you upgrade to the r6 or r6 mk2?
@@StylishIrisman As I'm mainly a photo shooter, I went for a used R6 with about 30k shutter usage. My 7Dmkii has a shutter count easily over 1.5 million (the 7Dmkii is a tank). The R6 mkii only felt like a software update over the R6.
The 7Dmkii metal chassis feels much more solid than the R6's plastic, but Canon plastics have been dependable in the past.
Also, the R8 and R50 are being officially announced over the next 24 hours, so that might bring further price discounts to the R6 (non mkii)
@@BenDunlop Thanks for the insight. Thats crazy shutter count on your 7Dmkii. There's a great offer on the R6 Mk1 new in my camera shop that i'm contemplating - I was thinking either that or the A7IV or A7C. A7IV is much more expensive and the R6 is 2400 with a kit lens.
The only thing stopping me pulling the trigger on the canon is the extremely expensive glass. Are you using EF glass with the R6?
@@StylishIrisman only EF glass, with RF adapter. Works great. Also recently picked up a Sigma SD Quattro, which I'll be modifying to accept EF glass too.
thx . for RAW file 🤗
Thank you for watching, hope they help!
Very good review🎉🎉🎉
Thank you !
@@JamesReader I have a R6 which I mostly use for video and this defo makes me think the cost of upgrading would not massively improve my end product.
So I'm interested in the R6/R6mk2 for Club Photography/Videography in a nightclub where the ravers generate enough heat for the light jockey, that sits on his arse all night, to start sweating. Do you think I should pick up the mk2 just because of the improved overheating, or do you think the regular R6 could handle all night (10pm-10am) of taking pictures and up to 5 minute clips of Video?
Although my instinct says the R6 would probably cope fine in those conditions (if it's shorter clips), I think if you have the budget for the MKII it's probably the more sensible option just in case you ever have to do more long form stuff.
12:43 Hahaha... In R6 II you have lens stabilizer ON, in original R6 - OFF. That's the whole secret of the different noise level.
Hi James, nice and high quality video, as always...! Greetings from Jakarta.
May I see your advices, as I want to upgrade my Canon RP. Is it worth upgrading to R8, or go to R, or jump to R6? R6 mark ii is beyond my budget, though. My budget is for R8, R or streching a bit to reach R6.
I shoot mainly street, portrait and macro, and have already EF 100mm L, EF 24-70 F4 L, EF 17-40 F4 L and RF 50mm F/1.8. Appreciate your feedbacks.
Thank you for watching! I think the R8 would be the logical upgrade, it even uses the same batteries as the RP. Honestly though for photography only the RP is very good, the main improvements you will see from the R8 or R6 is on the video side and perhaps better auto focus performance.
I am thinking this as my first mirrorless camera to help me with my travel vlogging. Needless to say I am pretty novice as my videos are a proof. Is it a good choice or should I wait for any updated camera from Nikon?
The R6 MKII would certainly excel at that job, but have you considered some smaller vlogging options like the Nikon Z30 or Sony ZV1? The R6 MKII might be overkill.
@@JamesReader haha…Actually I wanted a full frame one with good ibis and 4k60p. For last 2 months I was just hoping nikon comes out with an upgrade over their z6 ii. Guess thats not going to happen soon. I liked that small top screen on z6ii.Kudos for your video. Subscribed.
Now, six months later and the R6 price dropping to $1999 US, there's a $500 difference in cost. It's a close call for me. I don't do much video. It's just not that important to me although it's a nice feature to have. That said, the auto eye detect is nice. The tiny bit more detail in some shots is also nice. It's hard to say if the extra $500 would be worth it in my case. I love nature photography, and I believe both cameras do very well. Would the extra 4 megapixels add better cropping options? Probably, and adding a teleconverter to an R6 would make it the same price as the R6 MkII. What might interest me is how does the rolling shutter compare between the two when photographing fast moving subjects in sports and wildlife?
If you have neither should you pick up the mark two over the mark one? The mark one can be had for almost 10% off
Hey Michael! If you don’t need long form video (or long days shooting video where the overheating could be an issue) then save the money and go R6 if the saving is significant.
great comparison👍
i am a r6 user. very please to use this camera for landscape and street photography, and i would not go for the r6ii 😊
(but look forward to see the r5ii in the future 😂)
Thank you! I'm looking forward to the R5 MKII also!
Is there any improvement in the focusing system, not that the original R6 needed any focusing improvements?
You have extra parameters and control over the AF on the MKII but certainly for my use case scenario (not hugely demanding) I haven't noticed any huge improvements, R6 was already better than I needed. I find the original R absolutely fine for example. Now if you're shooting action/sport there may be some meaningful improvements I'm unaware of.
Thanks for doing this video. It was VERY helpful for me as I shoot more videos than take photos. One question: In looking at specs online... Can the Mark 2 actually shoot 4K as low as 60 MB/s where the original can only go to 120MB /s? For some longer projects, I like the option to save space BUT still shoot 4K footage. Thanks in advance for your help with this question!!
Thank you for watching Brian. You're correct, the R6 Mark II can do 4k at 60mp/s (No CLOG though). The lowest bitrate in 4k, CLOG3 seems to be 85 mp/s which is still great. As far as I can tell this is the same as the original R6 though, I just think a lot of documentation wasn't updated since IPB light was introduced to the R6.
@@JamesReader Thanks so much for the reply James. After I sent the message I was at a camera store yesterday and was holding the R6. It appears that the bit rate is just set by the type of video options you choose? Unlike other cameras, I didn’t see the option to alter the bit rate quality. Appreciate the help with spec details not covered by Canon. Thanks
@@BrianGnuse No problem - that’s true unfortunately the bit rate is determined by the recording mode and you can’t change it independently which is a little annoying.
@@JamesReader Ok… thanks again very much for the information!!!
I was hoping to see more dynamic Range in the r6ii. that would have been my only incentive to upgrade
If you need DD .... then this is not for Canon.
When does the wobble kick in - Ive heard you are ok with 35mm maybe 24mm lenses.
I've found 24mm to be mostly fine. By 35mm should be no issues at all.
@@JamesReader thanks James - I thought so. I just wish Canon had gyro stabalisation, its so handy. I'm a Nikon hybrid shooter but I aim to move soon. I'm edging towards Sony tho because I've been fairly impressed with Sonys active stabalisation and the option to use gyro stabalisation.
I just switched 2 days ago. I also have the R5. As of right now i feel like my original R6 has better focus than the R6ii. I shot ballerinas and the focus kept getting confused if there multiple people were on stage. I do like that there seems to be more light gathered on the new sensor and the headshot pics i shot are very sharp in comparison.
A firmware update should take care of the focus issues. My only other gripe is the positioning of the off button. My muscle memory for the R5 and R6 hasn’t changed yet and i have left the camera on and accidentally put it in movie mode.
I haven't tried the MKII's AF in too many demanding situations yet, intersting to hear about your experiences. Let's hope Canon iron out these few quirks.
I'm finding the same with the on off button, I keep leaving the camera turned on by accident too, especially when changing lens. Thank for watching. Going to be annoying switching between my R5 but I ultimately think it was a good choice by Canon. Thanks for watching!
Check if you have it on AI focus or Servo. That does make a big difference. Servo will be much better. The AF is much better than the original R6 from what I've experienced.
@@shawnlabranche6852 I live in servo. I shoot a lot of dance and fashion
I also have both R5 + R6mk2 and went from the original R6. I know what you mean with focusing. The AI is over guessing so I turned off all the auto portion and made it more like the R6. I think it was under AF screen 4 Limit Subject to Detect and I disabled all options except People when I need to shoot people. Also disabled whole area tracking AF screen menu 1. See if that helps you.
@@tekguyphoto thanks for the heads up. I will try it tonight
Great comparison! I noticed in the Camera Noise section that the mark ii sounds like my R6 when using IS and it does look like the IS switch gets flipped between the two cameras. Is the R6 Mark ii still noisy even with IS disabled?
Thank you for watching! I tested this and the MKII is noisier regardless of IBIS being on or off. IBIS didn’t seem to make any difference.
12:43 Hahaha... In R6 II you have lens stabilizer ON, in original R6 - OFF. That's the whole secret of the different noise level.
@ doesn’t make a difference. I’ve already tested that
@@JamesReader Weird, nobody else (RUclips reviewers) talk about this.
Thank you for making raw files available to download. I have Canon M50 and I was wondering if I can level up my videos buying camera with clog. Now , thanks to you I can play with those files in Davinci and see if I can do it before I spend thousands on expensive camera 📸. Much obliged!
You’re welcome! I’m really glad they helped.
@@JamesReader sadly I can only work on Canon R files as R6 and r7 files are 10 bit and I have free version of Davinci.
I like the r6 II and r8, i recently bought a used r6, which was insanely cheap because of these two cameras. So thanks canon.
For me the improved battery life and overheating performance at 4k60p is WORTH the upgrade.
Worth the savings to get the R6 for primarily photography?
I think so! R6 is an amazing camera for photo.
Why R6 is more wide on landscapes?
Yeah as he says, literally makes no sense upgrading for photography users. Great comparison as usual. The advantage now is people can get a cheaper R6 because of it.
The "whirring" sound is because on the R6 you had stabilization turned off, where on the R6 MKII you had it turned on. That's the noise difference.
It makes no difference, the R6 is almost silent in comparison. The MKII makes the same sound with IS turned off on the lens or even with no lens attached and IS turned off in the menu. Makes no difference to the sound. Try it with your MKII.
@@JamesReader Interesting... I definitely will. I have mine on pre-order and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive!
@@iamsomewhere Did you compare the noise difference?
Strange that you find the difference in IQ to be subtle, in your side-by-side it looked clearly better. Based on this review, which is the best I've seen, we are for sure going to add this camera to the inventory. The 4k 60 performance was the final point that won me over.
Thank you for watching Scott, glad the review was helpful. You’ll love the MKII. That 4k 60 is amazing.
@@JamesReader we have the original R6 and was deciding about the upgrade. I shoot a ton of videtin 4k 60 and from the sound of it, the mk2 is a good upgrade.
Is York (England) the city in the video?
Sheffield and Knaresborough are featured in this video, York is in some of my others.
What is better the Sony a7iv or the Canon R6 Mark ii?
I think they are both excellent with some small advantages/disadvantages. I love Canon lenses but the Sony has a range of more budget third party glass. RF mount is quite a big investment at the moment. I would rent both and see which you prefer.
The R6 II any day. C1, C2, and C3 custom modes, shutter and aperture priority for video, no overheating for 4k 30 and below, the switch for video/photo, better color science, 4mp more. I think it's worth the extra cost. Micro hdmi, and all-i still suck though, and no 4.2.2 10 bit in standard mode sucks as well.
Worth it
Would you choose the fx3 or the canon r6 mark ii for documentary work?
That's a tough one. I'm not a huge Sony fan, but being objective, Sony has more lens options and the FX3 seems to produce some awesome footage and may have the edge in dynamic range for video, from what I can tell. The R6 MKII on the other hand has an amazing image and I just love Canon's ergonomics and colours. It also has false colour and some other video features I don't *think* the FX3 has despite being part of Sony's Cine line. Good battery life, small package and reliable now for long form video, not to mention it has amazing photo capabilities too. The RF system is expensive though. The best thing is to rent both and see how they feel to you. Both are excellent.
@@JamesReader I purchase both to test cameras. For some reason, canon inspires me more than when I use Sony cameras. For Documentary/vlog, what lens would you recommend, 15-35 or 24-70? Great Content
@@MODESTYXO205 I feel the same regarding Sony vs Canon. For a full frame camera like the R6 MKII I would recommend the RF 24-70. Very versatile, sharp, well corrected and very little focus breathing. My favourite lens for video.
@@JamesReader thanks
I am a hybrid wedding shooter and shoot with two camera bodies, an R and an R6. I upgraded my R to the R6 II mostly because of the video features. Like you said on the photography side it's not that huge of a difference. There are some improvements. The video side is where it really shines and very happy I made the upgrade. Thanks for the great comparison video.
Thank for watching Shawn, sounds like the MKII will be a great addition for you.
How is the R for video? I shoot wedding photo and video and am considering it...lack of good 4K is swaying me though
@@zorydirwai8661 My issues with the R for video was lack of IBIS, 8 bit colour and heavy crop in 4k. It can still produce an amazing image though, as long as you are aware of its limitations.
@@zorydirwai8661 the R to me was great on both photo and video it has it's limits of course but very capable. You won't be disappointed if that's your budget. The 4k is cropped but it's fine. I was able to make great looking wedding pictures and film with the R and RP before upgrading
🔥🔥
Does the whirring sound goes off when recording video?
No - but it is slightly quieter in Video mode.
@@JamesReader Could it be the noise of the focus motor of the lens? Switch the lens to manual focus could eliminate this possibility.
@@carson7560 Happens even with no lens attached.
I have the Canon R, I'm think about upgrade to the R6 or R6 MK II, I do mostly landscape and architecture photography which do recommend ?
Do you do any video? If not, stick with the R. I would wait longer and upgrade to the R5 if you want to see a significant jump in image quality, I don't think you would get any major benefits from either the R6 or R6 MKII. I have another video where I compare the EOS R to the R6 with free RAW files that might help you decide.
@@JamesReader Thank you I have never used the video on my R yet
The reason that I was going to upgrade because the R6 have internal stabilizer because the R do not have it
@@johnjr47 If you need IBIS then R6 could indeed be the way to go, as long as you don't mind that sacrifice of resolution.
@@JamesReader That’s the million dollar question I like the R because of the resolution do think
