  • The new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS II from OM SYSTEM combines a lot of focal length in a relatively compact body. In addition to the Sync-IS (up to 7 EV), there is an improved tripod collar and a fluoride element, which makes cleaning and drying the lens easier - definitely pleasant when you are out and about in rough conditions. But how important are these improvements in practice? For whom can I recommend this lens?

    Appreciate the honest review. I already have the old 100 400 and I like it. It seems upgrade to the Mark II version is not needed.

    Wow, that info hits me right in time. I was about to switch for MFT birding, but, thanks to info about Sync-Is I will wait for new 100-400.

    Useful and comprehensive video, thank you Fabian. Worthwhile changes for those buying the lens new, but not enough for an owner of the Mk I version to upgrade.

    Thanks for the review! Glad they added sync IS. Makes it more of an equal pairing to the panasonic 100-400 combo.

    Thanks for a nice review. One downside I note in some forums is that the lens can turn on the camera mount after clicking into the mount. I've not of it being an issue beyond feeling annoying/disconcerting: Any views on this?? Thanks.

    Thanks for the honest review! The mark 1 version has been a real Goldilocks lens for me.
    Question: Does the new version also have the same studs on the barrel to keep the collar in line?
    I’d upgrade to the new version of the collar if/when I have the chance.

    thank you for your review, I have the old version but I always use at least 1/200-400 shutter speed for wildlife photo, think the Sync IS is not interested for me, subject is not still, birds are moving very fast.

    How does this lens compare to the Sony 200-600 G. I have both the OM-1 and the Sony 74 and I don’t know which is the better choice as u want to upgrade only one at this time

    • @sexysilversurfer
      @sexysilversurfer 4 дня назад

      Personally I would go for the Sony.

    • @sandnoodles
      @sandnoodles 2 дня назад +1

      I think your choice really depends on how you feel about the size of the sony 200-600. It's over 2kg and larger than the OM lens, though it's still 1.4kg, You might need an entire new photography bag for the 200-600 (i needed a new one for my tamron 150-500)
      Quality wise I couldn't say having used neither, but I expect you could get good results from both with practice.

    • @jasontaycs7195
      @jasontaycs7195 День назад

      The size and weight would be the main differentiator here I feel. Personally I’m shooting Sony too but I want the OM-1 for travel wildlife photography. Travelling with the 200-600 or any full frame 600mm lenses sounds like a nightmare.

    • @ThePNWRiderWA
      @ThePNWRiderWA День назад

      @ agree the 200-600 is a beast. ; it makes the OM-1 and the 100-400 feel like a feather weight.
      The problem I have with MFT is the image quality is just not the same.
      I probably will go with the 300 F4 as it sharper

    Thanks for a comprehensive review, I was expecting a more significant improvement with Sync IS. On paper it is something like 7 stops vs 3 stops of the old one.

    • @FabianFoppNaturephotography
      @FabianFoppNaturephotography  3 дня назад

      The 3 vs 7 stops is at 100mm. If I recall correctly, at 400mm it was 3 vs 5 stops

  • @MikeDaubenspeck
    @MikeDaubenspeck 4 дня назад +1

    In the video, and comments, you mention if you are an owner of the original version, it’s not worth the upgrade, but if buying new, go for the newer one. However, in the video, you mention pricing only being $100 different, but the original is now $500 less. Does that change your mind?? I just got my lens yesterday, the day before the announcement, and am debating keeping vs returning and preordering the new lens. Key for me is the new IS. And not sure if it matters, but mounting in an e-M1iii.

    • @FabianFoppNaturephotography
      @FabianFoppNaturephotography  4 дня назад +2

      If there is such a reduction, I would take the original lens, except if I shoot a lot in low light and need long shutter speeds (or for filming).

      @ Awesome.. Thanks for the follow up. I really appreciate it. Yes, I bought the original for $999, as its on their “winter sale”. Most of my shots are in great light, and never any video.. Keeping the original and saving the additional $500!

    Hi Fabian, I have read that sealing protection is pretty weak on this lens (IPX1 = X means no spec on dust ingress, 1 means water ingress limited to small vertical rain). What a pity that for an outdoor product, OM System did not invest a single yen to improve the original Sigma design.

    It is disappointing that they did not update opics of this lens. They could easily buy the license for 100-400 DG DN from Sigma. Although... Would it be any better? Digital Picture sample images suggest otherwise.

    Never understood why OM doesn’t release a 200 f2 or something like Fuji. I would consider changing for that lens

    • @FabianFoppNaturephotography
      @FabianFoppNaturephotography  4 дня назад

      This would be amazing indeed. My favorite MFT lens is probably still the Panasonic 200/2.8. My only guess is that a 200/2 would be "too heavy" for the average MFT user. But already a 200/2.4 would be great

    • @tonigenes5816
      @tonigenes5816 4 дня назад

      I don't think Fuji had too much succes with 200mm F/2.0 and discontinued it. Probably it was too short for birding, expensive and heavy.
      And there is already Panasonic 200mm F/2.8 for MFT mount. It is a nice lens, but I noticed that people prefere 300mm F/4.0 because of longer reach.
      I hope I am not wrong, but Panasonic 200mm F/2.8 is discontinued too. So why OM System would release an 200mm lens ? Probably not a good idea, they would not sel it well. Rather release a 50-200mm zoom.

    • @jasontaycs7195
      @jasontaycs7195 День назад

      The 200mm f2 from Fuji was interesting but it falls short in the size and weight. The equivalent Sony 300mm f2.8 is smaller and lighter than the 200mm f2.
      Would be nice if OM or Panasonic made more lenses with inbuilt TC. Maybe a 100-300mm f4 with 1.4x TC or 200-400mm f5.6 with 1.4x TC. Something that’s more of the enthusiast range rather than the Olympus 150-400mm Pro lens that’s quite expensive.

  • @cy9nvs
    @cy9nvs 4 дня назад +1

    OM hasn't put out a single new optic, and not a single truly new camera since they took over Olympus.
    Just a bit of a new housing here, new coating on the front element of the rebadged Sigma there... Sinking ship

    All these new slow lenses are depressing. They have the technology to make lenses lighter than ever but they keeping choosing slow max apertures. If canon had made the 100-500 a f/5.6, I’d have bought it.

      @martienvanbokhorst1962 me too! Modern cameras can handle high ISO easily, I am glad we get some slower lens in lower price. Something like a 600mm F5.6 is completed out of my budget

    • @stubones
      @stubones 5 дней назад +1

      @@martienvanbokhorst1962 Good for you enjoying your stupidly high ISO in anything but bright daylight. That's not my cuppa I'm afraid. Canon (more than others) making all these slow lenses is ridiculous. Those f/11 primes are a joke too. If you think critically and see Nikon and Sony making very good, reasonably light 200-600 f/6.3 mirrorless lenses with great image quality at a great price you'll realise I'm right. Canon's saving grace is the EF to EORS mount adapter, becuase the RF range is meh.

    • @dasaen
      @dasaen 5 дней назад +6

      I think because high ISO is more usable, they prioritize the price advantage of a smaller aperture. I have had many generation m43 cameras, and these lenses are so much better now that I can use iso 25600 with dxo pureraw.
      I would still prefer a constant wider aperture, but those get expensive.

    • @sexysilversurfer

      In the UK light levels are abysmal and with flying birds there’s an issue with getting fast shutter speeds.
