The "craziest lenses" will always likely be telescopes. For instance, Celestron has an 8" RASA telescope at f/2, which is the equivalent of 400mm. The cost is $2K, which seems low for a camera lens of 400mm, f/2. Of course, they're intended for deep space, and not terrestrial applications.

There's also a number of Canon EF 1200 mm f/5.6 L that are out. The lens was not only massive 36 pounder, but had a small price tag of $89,999 MSRP. This was debauted back in 1984 during one the LA Olympic.
Canon recently made a slower rf lens but for 20k, Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM.

A bit more specific, f/0.5 is the maximum theoretical aperture of an _aplanatic_ (only corrected for spherical aberration and coma) distortion-free lens on-axis in air, assuming no transmission losses. If you allow for distortion, and spherical and coma aberrations, one can go a bit faster still. (Source: Applied Photographic Optics, Sidney F. Ray, Third Edition, Focal Press, 2002)

Really enjoyed this content. For camera, I’d love to see your take on the Zeiss Ikon Contarex Bullseye. It is beautifully but overly engineered and is the product of a tremendous R&D budget and came out in 1959 as the hopeful camera of choice for professional photographers. This was followed by the lighter, cheaper, easier to maintain, solid workhorse of a camera, the Nikon F in 1960 which, in fact, become the go-to for professionals and effectively ended Zeiss Ikon as camera company. The Contarex is a joy to hold and to use but a cautionary tale of over-engineering.

You can buy the Voigtländer Super Nokton 29mm f/0.8 today. It's the fastest production lens. And it's less than 1800$.
I am currently considering buying a Zeiss Mirotar that costs nearly 6k. But it's 1/205 and supposedly optically perfect and apochromatic.
I already own a 150mm f/1.0 lens. Which is massive and kinda expensive. It's not even made out of glass.
If you want truly weird lenses: look at telecentric lenses. Which have effectively infinite focal length and gives you an orthographic image with no perspective.
There is also a Applied Science video on Hyperventric optics. A lens that lets you look "around" objects.
and finally you can make a multi hole pinhole lens. To get a wide angle stich.

@@CongThanhContent there is a website called allphotolenses that has a really great dataset of lenses ans variations. they usually like sample photos, reviews and videos.
For some of the rare lenses you might get a single sample gallery on Flickr and that's it. Not even a sensationalized RUclips video (like there is some for the Nikon 6mm).
The 150mm f/1 lens is for thermal cameras and seemingly not that rare. And there is even crazier lenses that reach boule limit for the front element.
For all kinds of scientific lenses, usually Edmund optics on RUclips has demos.

I have a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 manual focus lens for my M6 mark II. That is my fastest lens. My setup for longest reach is to put a teleconverter (2x) on a 75-300. I get decent moon pix at 600mm. The craziest lens I have is an old FD mount 135mm f/2.8 with an adapter for FD to EF-M with the lock. I works just fine on my M6 mark II.

Two good lenses that have no equivalents in terms of range and quality :
for photo use, covers full frame : Canon EF 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 L lens (I have one copy, if you need samples I can give you some)
    for cinema use, covers S35 sensors (cinema's APS-C) : Angénieux Optimo 12x 24-290mm T2.8

The helios 44 was originally silver, then became black. The silver ones are m39 mount and the 44-2m is in M42 mount. They also had other mounts... BUT! Look up the bigger brother the Helios 40. It is 85mm f1.5, it has crazier swirls and sharper center.

Hee, hee... I had the privilege to get my hands on a Canon EOS-1D (??Mark II?) when it came out in the early 2000's. That was a time when consumer cameras had less than 5 MP.
This 1D was equipped with a brand new Canon lens F/0.95. I don't remember the focal length anymore. Was it 50? Was it 85? Too long ago. 🤷‍♂️
The camera was in the hands of a pro photographer who wanted to shoot something near me.
I was sooooo thrilled that I asked him if I might look through it. But I didn't wait for the response. 😂
It took me about 1 second and the camera was not in his hands anymore, the strap not around his neck but around my neck. 🤣
I pointed on my father under very low light conditions and made a portrait that blew me away.
The photographer let me copy that file in full resolution. I printed it in 20 by 30 cm (8" by 12 ").
The F/0.95 is really the edge of practicality. The camera focussed on the eyes of my father, the ears almost disappear in blur, even the tip of his regular sized nose starts to be blurred - crazy. 😎🤭

      @@mikafoxx2717 I think you're right. I did a looooot of research. 🤭
So it was probably not 0.95 but 1.0 or 1.2 and one of these 3:
      - EF50mm f/1.0L USM (1989)
      - EF85mm f/1.2L II USM ( March 2006)
      - EF50mm f/1.2L USM (January 2007)
The last 2 are likely regarding the date of release. But as it is now almost 20 years ago I really don't remember if it was 50 or 85 mm. The result was incredible. The portrait I shot with that expensive equipment (it was a spontaneous snapshot) is hanging in a frame in the apartment of my parents.
The camera back then was most likely a EOS-1Ds Mark II. Mark III is rather unlikely.
