The questions always roll in when a new camera gets released on whether or not you should upgrade or not.
A lot depends on what you do and how you do it to determine if you should go with the Canon 5D Mark IV or Canon 5D Mark III.
I made this video to put them side by side and give you some thoughts on both of there specs and who each camera would be more.
For me as a working professional I see no reason why I personally wouldn't upgrade form the Mark III to the Mark IV. If you're a non working professional and yes I think that stipulation means something and you have a Mark III, unless you need to upgrade you don't have to.
As I have been saying for years, it's not the camera that makes you, it's you who makes the camera.

I just upgraded a month ago from Mark III to IV. It might not be worth the money for people on a budget but if you're an enthusiast, it's definitely a fun upgrade to make. The touch screen is totally awesome. Very fast and very intuitive like I would never expect from a niche product like this. It's almost if not as much as responsive as an iPhone. I also wanted to have a GPS for many years but hated the fact that the external one uses the hot shoe. The wifi is also very worth it. I now peacefully sit on my sofa and presort my pictures while watching TV, pixel peeping on my iPad before I transfer the files to Lightroom. I've heard so many rant on the mark IV it's almost convinced me not to upgrade. BUT... it's still way better than the mark III AND and it's a Canon with an EF mount!!! You don't get that with a A7RII, do you?

Man the MK 4 is making the MK 3 look pretty good especially when you consider the age and price differences.

    • @chrisp5526
      @chrisp5526 5 лет назад

smokey267 I agree.. I have the mark 3, and was envious when I saw the m4 showing 4K video... that was until I saw the file sizes were ridiculously high, and the crop factor is terrible. I do wish my m3 had gps so I can track where I took my photos, and I wish it had video autofocus, but other than that, I can’t see upgrading the camera. And with the high price differences, it would make the M4 a bad choice. I’m not sure if I would need the WiFi..I assume it makes it better to transfer photos, but direct connect of memory card to computer is very easy and extremely fast.

+Marek Kunicki I completely agree, I rented the Mark IV for 3 days and shot NYFW and the images were brilliant using higher ISO's , I even tested 32000 and for online purposes they were surprisingly usable and most important the client was happy with all images they requested. Its a definite upgrade for images but I didn't test it enough to comment about the 4K yet.

The mark 3 is amazing. The full frame is a must. But what separates it from lesser cameras is the great iso numbers. You can go really high on iso numbers, and get very little graininess. The fact that you can go high on iso and get great picture quality means you don’t need large aperatures to take low light photos; you only need large aperture lenses to have good bokeh now.
Sure the mark3 doesn’t have an automatic focus for video, but with the high iso capabilities, just put the aperture of your lens to a high number, and everything will be in focus, with the auto iso increasing as needed to make e correct exposure setting.
I do like he gps feature of the new mark 4, bc it will allow you to easily track where your photos were taken, and view them on a map, if viewing them on an iPad. But is t really worth the extra $1,000?-I don’t think so. And as for WiFi, it really doesn’t take much effort to transfer photos without WiFi.
As for 4K video recording-besides the mark 4 having it, the crop factor is terrible, and I hear the file sizes make it unusable for non professionals, unless you have amazingly large hard drives.
If I was on a budget, I’d get the mark 3. You won’t regret it. It takes amazing photos, is ergonomically amazing, and very easy to use.
I hope this helped! But then again, I’m replying to your comment a year late. You must have already bought a camera. If you did, what did you buy?

    • @davidg3664
      @davidg3664 4 года назад +1

Chris P thanks for the information, very helpful! I know I am very late but should I stick with the 5d mark iii or should I get the new 90d. My budget is around $1,000-$1,300. I want to invest on lenses because I think it’s more important.

    • @cassineslo895
      @cassineslo895 4 года назад +1

@@davidg3664 a full frame for the price of a aps c size sensor is always a better option. in this case the 90d vs the mark 3 is really up to wether you're looking into video or photography. if its video then the 90d and if its photography then the mark 3.

I like how they haven't changed the design. I went from a 5dmrk1 to a mrk3. I just picked the mrk3 up and I new exactly where the basic buttons and their functions were. I can see why they haven't changed the design its so you dont have to fiddle with all these new buttons. 5dmrk1 had that one for about six years, mrk3 for almost 5 years now. They have never let me down. Been shooting with them for private and work. Will sure be looking in to the mrk4 at the store. :)

The autofocus in video mode on the Mark IV is worth it for itself for anyone doing video, if you're going to compare mark iii to mark IV. The autofocus is soooooo handy for self filming situations especially when you don't have a landmark or object to set the focus upon and want to get a quick shot. Something that is even more difficult when you're shooting wide open.

Hey Jared!! Hope you well. The canon 5d3 can in actual fact do the single focus to af servo option, but the button that would be remapped would be the aperture button for the 5dmk3👍🏻

Looking to invest in my first full frame! Which will be used 75/25 between photo and video. That said, which would you guys recommend?
-Refurb 5d Mark III with a solid lense or two (Roughly 2K for refurb)
-Sony A7Rii with a mediocre lense? (Roughly 3K)
I don't want to spend 4k+ right off the rip so that throws the MK IV out the window. Not only is the A7Rii more expensive but i'd have to get a lense adapter, and that leaves room for a mediocre lense. Even though the Mark III is almost 5 years old, does it still hang with the newer big boys and is a worthy investment as a first full frame?
Let me know what you all think!

I bought the Mark iii in December and now I'm looking forward to upgrade to 4K.
When I saw that canon released Mark IV, my brain froze for a second. It's was the same feeling when you get a cook gadget but a week later, a better version is released and you just want to turn back time.
Thank god, 5D Mark IV didn't change that much and I can move on to a GH4 or just move to a RED and still get to use the Mark III for photos and some cool videos.
I hate that canon won't enable this DSLRs to shoot RAW just so you spend much more money for another one who does.
    Great review, man.

Hey Jared, love your videos man! This one helped a lot....
We shoot a ton of real estate photos and videos. We use a Canon 6D right now and the photos come out amazing but the video lacks when it comes to shooting in low light for twilight shoots and dark rooms. We have decided to go with the 5DM4 because of 4k and 1080p at 60fps video and the autofocus is phenomenal for those close up shots on kitchen sinks, then panning to the whole kitchen. Appreciate the video man!

6:29 - You CAN do it on 5DIII! Just not with AF-ON, but One-Shot\Servo switch could be assigned to DoF preview button (the one on the front, beside the lens). Pretty much the same convenience.

30.4 MP vs 22.4. processing power, wifi, nfc, gps, dual pixel raw, viewfinder 2, 4k, 1080 @ 60fps, hdr video, timelapse, auto focusing in video mode. just to name a few upgrades and you say it's not worth it. getting this camera you wouldn't have to upgrade for a very long time. it is definitely a worthy upgrade especially for those who want the best and not looking to upgrade for a long time. think of it as a long time investment.

well i was use to taking pictures only on my phone i never use the camera before so my uncle gave me his old camera a canon 400d 10.1 megapixel and i was using that and i learn the camera and i took some great shots. but then i realize my pictures wasn't looking sharp like the girl pictures who lived next door to me. i was using the tamron 18-200 lens that came with the camera and i notice in low light situations the camera didn't take a good picture and i had the iso at the max which was 1600. the camera don't record video and i notice all of this by using another camera that excels in everything that's what i meant by that. what i meant to say was i wanted a camera with a better auto focus and better in low light and can record video when i want to do that. a couple of people told me to go full frame and look at the canon 5d mark 3 and the canon 6d mark 2 i just want to choose between the ywo and call it a day lol.

Question: Without a focus assist light built into the camera (mark III or mark IV), and without being able to use the Canon speed light on the hot shoe b/c you need to use the hot shoe for the Profoto Air Remote to fire the B1 Kit, should I be worried that this camera may fail to achieve auto focus in dynamic low light conditions, such as a wedding reception venue.?

  • @trevorpsy

Hi Jared. Seems like a couple things (important things) were left out. My understanding is the dynamic range for stills is significantly improved in the Mark IV, and the focusing is quicker and more accurate in the Mark IV. Do I have these things right?

Hi Jared, just wanted to know something, as I am considering the Canon 5D Mark IV. When using the Dual Pixel AF, if I am correct, we need to use STM lenses right, to take advantage of the Dual Pixel AF? Considering we only have (I think) 3 STM lenses as of 2016, the 50mm f1.8, the 40mm f2.8 and the 24-105mm f3.5-5.6, considering you have worked so much on the camera already, are there any other lenses that can take advantage of the Dual Pixel AF?

Reference 6mins 40secs... You can remap the DOF preview button on front of camera on the 5Dmkiii to change focus option between alservo and oneshot focus. I have it set so focus is normally in oneshot and when i hold down the DOF preview button it will select alservo mode for as long as its held down.

It's actually cheaper for me to fly to New York on British Airways (£390 return) and by the MK4 from B&H in Manhattan. I would be saving my self £500. Skillow image quality wise: no. But the 5D Mark 3 have much better autofocus. So it maybe be worth it if you shoot moving subjects.

I'm going to keep my 5D III, it is really a working-horse, lovely piece of equipment! In my opinion the 5D IV, is not worth the swop if you already own a 5D III, use some money on good glass instead👌

SMS No. Canon's clearly holding back. 720p is dead. Offering it at all is useless.

As a hobbyist, I still love my 5dII but it won't last forever so an upgrade is somewhere in my future. I shoot time lapse, landscape and portraits so a good all around camera would be nice. Video is fun to play with but not a requirement. I'm thinking a 5dsr would be a good choice.

What does refurbished mean when it comes to Canon? Do they replace the guts of the inside?

I've been shooting with my 5D Mark III for the last few years. Really Great in low light. I shoot alot of weddings, Portfolios, and different functions I don't really do too much video. After listening to this review and seeing it some pics, Not really worth the Upgrade for me at this time especially with the older card format still being used on it. Thanks Jared.

I'm coming from a 60D and I intend to move up to a full frame but is it really worth it to go for the 5dm4 or should I just go with the 5dm3? the m4 is about 15k here is Malaysia while the m3 is 10k brand new and roughly 6-8k secondhand. My heart is telling me that if I want to upgrade, go big but logically and according to my wallet, it's better to go for the m3. Thing is, am I actually losing out on anything if I choose the m3? I know coming from a 60D it'll be a huge upgrade either way.
(btw when is the 6dm2 coming out?)

I notice that when shooting video on the mark 3, that it does a terrible job with moving objects, or when you pan the camera horizontally to capture your surroundings. Moving subjects appear blurry, and all images are blurry when you pan the camera horizontally. Does anyone know if there is a way to correct this, such as increasing the frame rate frozen let’s say 30fps to 60fps?
By the way, the m3 takes amazing HD videos when subjects are not moving much, such as video taping people opening gifts on Christmas.

I have a dilemma, please help!!! I am venturing in wedding photography and my current gear is a 6D as my main shooter and the T3i as a second shooter. I have 85 1.2 MkII, Sigma 35 1.4 art, and a 17-40mm f4 L. I would love to shoot at full-frame for all my lens. I have a wedding coming up in 4 months and I would like to replace my T3i to 5D but where I am torn is, I can buy a 5Dmk3 now just in time for my wedding shoot or wait longer and miss out on two weddings to meet my budget for the 5Dmk4. Help Jared!

Awesome video Jared, based on your opinion, I'm definitely upgrading from 80D to FF MK3 due to I'm mainly shooting still pictures. I don't do a video on SLR Camera or 4K.

I went with your advice and purchased a 5D mark III which came down to $1865 brand new, instead of 5D mark IV which was about $2820 brand new with discounts here in Sri Lanka..!! Prices are pretty cool ha? As you said I am thinking of lens to buy with the 5D mark III. Should I go with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC or a used 24-70 f4 IS L lens? My budget is below $1000.

I want to get a full frame Canon DSLR. I like to take pictures. But I think I will be doing video the most. I actually want to be able to use follow focus(I make video's of cars driving by, which is a bit hard to turn my camera 160 degrees and at the same time focussing on the car.) I would like to be able to shoot RAW video, so it needs a CF card I think.
Does anyone know any other Canon DSLR other than the 5D Mark IV which will be good enough for me?

Quick question about video on them- markiv 4k at 1.74 x how about 1080p is it still cropped 1.74x. Is the 1080p on mark iii full frame no crop ? Wouldn't that be a huge benefit on the mark iii side for video

Hey fro!! So I’m looking into either of these and I’m on eBay where usually you’ll get a good price for either of them and I’m finding a lot more better deals on the IV than the III, why is that?

Hi Jared another great video, now I currently have the old canon 7D for which I shoot Basketball on. I am looking at shooting weddings, I have not owned a F/F camera before, so I am hoping either yourself or your followers could advise if I should go to 5Dmkiii or the MKiv. I have been advised by another photographer here in Australia that I should go with the MkIII over the MKiv, so if you have any wedding photographers in your followers perhaps they can advise, TIA. Mark from Australia.

I have a canon 600d crop camera with a canon 50 mm 1.8 lens. I want to upgrade to full frame and I was thinking the mark iv with the 24 70 2.8 lens. I photograph kids, newborn, babies, maternity, family and portraits. Was wondering if I should save a little and go for the iii instead. I am not going to use video. I want good and fast autofocus, because most kids (toddlers) are moving a lot. And I want to be able to use high iso without grain for outside on cloudy days. I want sharpness. My only concern with the 24 70 2.8 lens is the lack of IS. But now I don't know if I should go for the iii or iv? Help! :-D

I've been waiting for a review like this to come out for the last few weeks - so let me start by saying thank you. There seems to be this preoccupation with saying that Canon didn't catch up to industry leaders like the A7r II or the D810 in terms of dynamic range or resolution. Secondly, the current reviews out there (I won't mention who) have this tendency to mark features such as video crop or the limitations of Dual-pixel raw as deal breakers for those shopping around.
For myself, I am astrophotographer who has enjoyed the 70D, 5D Mark III but was looking for something to enter the full frame market for canon that would improve on shadow, and low light noise that was an ongoing issue that had to be addressed in post with my 5D Mark III and 70D.
You honestly, yet critically discussed what this camera can do and what it should have done better while not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. For that, I tip my hat to you Jared.
    Cheers man

I no joke gasped when you brought up the dual pixel raw technology. I have been sitting comfortably with my 5d mark ii for years (until recently as i've been filming more) and am way behind the game on keeping up with new tech. I had no clue that they were working on that kind of technology. Holy shit

I'm not full time photographer and publish this and turn it into money, I'm doing this because the state or art, fun and hobby. I have the option go between mk3 + 24-70 2.8 II or mk4 body only with 50mm 1.8 or 14-70mm F/4L , I need your input thank you.
