    I just upgraded a month ago from Mark III to IV. It might not be worth the money for people on a budget but if you're an enthusiast, it's definitely a fun upgrade to make. The touch screen is totally awesome. Very fast and very intuitive like I would never expect from a niche product like this. It's almost if not as much as responsive as an iPhone. I also wanted to have a GPS for many years but hated the fact that the external one uses the hot shoe. The wifi is also very worth it. I now peacefully sit on my sofa and presort my pictures while watching TV, pixel peeping on my iPad before I transfer the files to Lightroom. I've heard so many rant on the mark IV it's almost convinced me not to upgrade. BUT... it's still way better than the mark III AND and it's a Canon with an EF mount!!! You don't get that with a A7RII, do you?

    I'm not using my camera (5dIII) for video at all, I just wanted a camera to take pictures (not videos) so sticking with my 5DIII for now :-)

    6:29 - You CAN do it on 5DIII! Just not with AF-ON, but One-Shot\Servo switch could be assigned to DoF preview button (the one on the front, beside the lens). Pretty much the same convenience.

      The mark 3 is amazing. The full frame is a must. But what separates it from lesser cameras is the great iso numbers. You can go really high on iso numbers, and get very little graininess. The fact that you can go high on iso and get great picture quality means you don’t need large aperatures to take low light photos; you only need large aperture lenses to have good bokeh now.
      Sure the mark3 doesn’t have an automatic focus for video, but with the high iso capabilities, just put the aperture of your lens to a high number, and everything will be in focus, with the auto iso increasing as needed to make e correct exposure setting.
      I do like he gps feature of the new mark 4, bc it will allow you to easily track where your photos were taken, and view them on a map, if viewing them on an iPad. But is t really worth the extra $1,000?-I don’t think so. And as for WiFi, it really doesn’t take much effort to transfer photos without WiFi.
      As for 4K video recording-besides the mark 4 having it, the crop factor is terrible, and I hear the file sizes make it unusable for non professionals, unless you have amazingly large hard drives.
      If I was on a budget, I’d get the mark 3. You won’t regret it. It takes amazing photos, is ergonomically amazing, and very easy to use.
      I hope this helped! But then again, I’m replying to your comment a year late. You must have already bought a camera. If you did, what did you buy?

      Chris P thanks for the information, very helpful! I know I am very late but should I stick with the 5d mark iii or should I get the new 90d. My budget is around $1,000-$1,300. I want to invest on lenses because I think it’s more important.

    • @cassineslo895
      @cassineslo895 5 лет назад +1

      @@davidg3664 a full frame for the price of a aps c size sensor is always a better option. in this case the 90d vs the mark 3 is really up to wether you're looking into video or photography. if its video then the 90d and if its photography then the mark 3.

      +Marek Kunicki I completely agree, I rented the Mark IV for 3 days and shot NYFW and the images were brilliant using higher ISO's , I even tested 32000 and for online purposes they were surprisingly usable and most important the client was happy with all images they requested. Its a definite upgrade for images but I didn't test it enough to comment about the 4K yet.

    The autofocus in video mode on the Mark IV is worth it for itself for anyone doing video, if you're going to compare mark iii to mark IV. The autofocus is soooooo handy for self filming situations especially when you don't have a landmark or object to set the focus upon and want to get a quick shot. Something that is even more difficult when you're shooting wide open.

    I like how they haven't changed the design. I went from a 5dmrk1 to a mrk3. I just picked the mrk3 up and I new exactly where the basic buttons and their functions were. I can see why they haven't changed the design its so you dont have to fiddle with all these new buttons. 5dmrk1 had that one for about six years, mrk3 for almost 5 years now. They have never let me down. Been shooting with them for private and work. Will sure be looking in to the mrk4 at the store. :)

    Man the MK 4 is making the MK 3 look pretty good especially when you consider the age and price differences.

    • @chrisp5526
      @chrisp5526 6 лет назад

      smokey267 I agree.. I have the mark 3, and was envious when I saw the m4 showing 4K video... that was until I saw the file sizes were ridiculously high, and the crop factor is terrible. I do wish my m3 had gps so I can track where I took my photos, and I wish it had video autofocus, but other than that, I can’t see upgrading the camera. And with the high price differences, it would make the M4 a bad choice. I’m not sure if I would need the WiFi..I assume it makes it better to transfer photos, but direct connect of memory card to computer is very easy and extremely fast.

    30.4 MP vs 22.4. processing power, wifi, nfc, gps, dual pixel raw, viewfinder 2, 4k, 1080 @ 60fps, hdr video, timelapse, auto focusing in video mode. just to name a few upgrades and you say it's not worth it. getting this camera you wouldn't have to upgrade for a very long time. it is definitely a worthy upgrade especially for those who want the best and not looking to upgrade for a long time. think of it as a long time investment.

      well i was use to taking pictures only on my phone i never use the camera before so my uncle gave me his old camera a canon 400d 10.1 megapixel and i was using that and i learn the camera and i took some great shots. but then i realize my pictures wasn't looking sharp like the girl pictures who lived next door to me. i was using the tamron 18-200 lens that came with the camera and i notice in low light situations the camera didn't take a good picture and i had the iso at the max which was 1600. the camera don't record video and i notice all of this by using another camera that excels in everything that's what i meant by that. what i meant to say was i wanted a camera with a better auto focus and better in low light and can record video when i want to do that. a couple of people told me to go full frame and look at the canon 5d mark 3 and the canon 6d mark 2 i just want to choose between the ywo and call it a day lol.

    I have a 5D Mk II - Amazed by the Mk IV so far. There are so many features that make it an incredible upgrade. The touch screen alone adds immediate value - Pinch zoom, pick focus area, delete confirm. GPS, WiFi - adjust settings/taking pics through my cell phone will be a big benefit to my photography needs. The MK III isn't even on the radar
    I use my cameras for photos 99% of the time. Video is nice, but not a defining reason for making the purchase. If video is 70% of the reason you're buying a camera, there are much better DSLR's than even the MK III.

    As a hobbyist, I still love my 5dII but it won't last forever so an upgrade is somewhere in my future. I shoot time lapse, landscape and portraits so a good all around camera would be nice. Video is fun to play with but not a requirement. I'm thinking a 5dsr would be a good choice.

    Reference 6mins 40secs... You can remap the DOF preview button on front of camera on the 5Dmkiii to change focus option between alservo and oneshot focus. I have it set so focus is normally in oneshot and when i hold down the DOF preview button it will select alservo mode for as long as its held down.

    I bought the Mark iii in December and now I'm looking forward to upgrade to 4K.
    When I saw that canon released Mark IV, my brain froze for a second. It's was the same feeling when you get a cook gadget but a week later, a better version is released and you just want to turn back time.
    Thank god, 5D Mark IV didn't change that much and I can move on to a GH4 or just move to a RED and still get to use the Mark III for photos and some cool videos.
    I hate that canon won't enable this DSLRs to shoot RAW just so you spend much more money for another one who does.
    Great review, man.

    I'm retired and I shoot all the time. I have 2 5D Mark III's and I was thinking of going with the Mark IV but I think I'll stay with what I have. I have a ton of "L" glass too. I'm not making money, only on a rare occasions. There's also the raw incompatibility with my CS6 and Lightroom 6.7 versions. That's a no go because I'd have to go with CC's then. Great video, it helped me decide.

    when I upgraded from 5D2 to 5D3 it was worth it (although I still shoot with the mk2 sometimes), but this upgrade is not worth the price difference IMHO, at least not for the kind of pictures I take (I rarely shoot vid). The 5D3 does everything I expect it to do and hasn't let me down (yet), so I'll wait it out until something new comes along worthy of my hard earned cash.

    The MK IV, but I have already bought the 5DsR.
    I have seen the 5D IV taking video's, and one thing what is very positive, it doesn't easily overheat. And the images (jpeg) are really good what you take from the 4K stream. And that is one of the reasons why they didn't compress the film stream, JPeG is already compressed. The only drawback is the file size. But he, a single picture of the Hasselblad H5D can be as big as 1.2Gb. In comparison with that, the film files are not that big.
    But when our friends are ready with the adjustments of Magic Lantern, you shoot RAW film with this camera and you decide if you want to have 4K or not. And how many camera's can shoot film in RAW!
    The Dual Pixel is as good as on the 80D, it works flawless, no other DSLR is that smooth with focusing in film.
    What you already noticed is the older card slots, but you can use the newer cards and you notice really a big difference. I have asked my friends @ Canon Netherlands for some comments and they said that the card slot is in fact fast enough.

    Another great video Jared. Did you know that in the UK where I live, the 5D MK4 costs £3599?!! It's actually cheaper for me to fly to New York on British Airways (£390 return) and by the MK4 from B&H in Manhattan. I would be saving my self £500. In March, moved to full frame. Bought Canon glass and adapted it to Sony a7rii anticipating using the 5D mark iv as a primary and the Sony as a backup/video camera. Now, probably going to buy the 5D mark iii and two or three e-mount primes. Why? The 5D was going to be primarily for stills. The card tech and buffer is what gets me. I don't need a huge buffer, but my Sony blows the Canon away with resolution and dynamic range so I was looking for the 5D to have speed. At this price, it shouldn't even be a question. Cards are not that expensive when dealing with a $3,500 body. The mark iii has the same card tech, is within splitting hairs with autofocus, and has a bigger buffer frame count. I can deal with everything else and I'm doing it so I can wait and see what Canon does next. If they continue on the current path, I may go Nikon and I know what it would cost. Don't think it's happening? I watched a guy drop around $8K in my local shop while I was comparing the mark iii and mark iv. He was investing in the Nikon D810.

    my free advise for people who currently own cropped censor :-if you are using cropped censor and want to upgrade to full frame then wait for another 6-7 months for price of 5d mark 3 to fall further and upgrade to 5d mark 3. mark 4 has nothing exciting. no point jumping to 5d mark 4. instead wait for few months and invest in better lenses.if you already have 5d mark 3 then shut up and keep shooting with 5d mark 3. you will be a fool to upgrade to 5d mark 4. it seems canon has just launched 5d mark 4 for heck of it3-4 years after 5dmark 3 and still both cameras look the same. it would have been better if they could have changed some of its design. its funny that cropped censor like 80d has a articulating screen but the full frame version of canon does not have this feature.. I have no clue what has canon been thinking while designing 5d mark 4. Fuji's and sony are constantly coming up with top features but canon is still stuck to ali baba's time..

    I have two 5D M3's - I bought my last one when B&H dropped the price to $2k before discontinuing them for good. Yes it's 6 year old camera, but the photo and video quality out of it is still very respectable, and it's a proven workhorse. The 5D M3 was a HUGE improvement over the 5D M2. Wish I could say the same for the M4 - yes, I like several updates like the dual pixel autofocus and touchscreen on the M4 and other refinements. But waiting 4 years for this successor that has no articulating screen, and a horrible codec on it's CROPPED 4K video - give me a break! Too little too late. Still love canon glass, but for 4K video I guess I'll have to mount them on a C300 M2-- please Canon, pay attention to what Sony and Panasonic are doing and get your technology up to date!

      Sony literally killed their DSLR market at the beginning and then eventually ended up replacing almost all the DSLRs with Mirrorless.

    • @michaelandrew83
      @michaelandrew83 8 лет назад +6

      Sony is the only company that puts seemingly every single bit of tech in every camera they put out but it has only been like that for a couple of years. And to be honest, sony cameras are a nightmare to use for professional photography. For some reason and I cannot for the life of me understand why, but the internet seems to think that Canon owes them some sort of super camera. They want every single thing packed into 1 camera.

    • @pinch-of-salt

      Michael Andrew that's what competition is for. You can't expect half assed products to compete in today's market.

      Mirrorless is worthless for high speed and event still photography. I am not talking about Video, which to be honest, the Sony a7sii is incredible at for the value.

    i disagree that this 5Dm4 is a worthwhile upgrade for current mk3 users. the feature set is to similar, this should be for new cannon shooters, crop to full framers, and or full replacements/ backups. i say if you have mk3 wait for mk4 price drops

      Have you used the camera? A blanket statement like that deserves some background, what kinds of photographers? I am shooting a wedding next week and you can bet your house that I would much rather have the 5f4 than the 3. Why on earth why would I pass up on an extra stop of clean DR and noise control?

      +Jared Polin i just have a hard time believing a true cost benefit analysis for the minor updates wouldnt suggest an upgrade. if you dont plan on editing much then maybe the new built in wifi/ NFC can save you some time, but as far as producing images with a discernable difference in quality i would say no way. this is why im saying the camer is purchase is better for those moving from a mk2 or similar or looking to move into full frame for wide angle use.

    • @purenupe1
      @purenupe1 8 лет назад +1

      +Michael Andrew you need for 1 extra stop of DR may be more desireable than most. but in my opinion the act of shelling out $3500 to get images that are 98% the same as those you can create on the mrk 3 with little to no work flow improvement seems wasteful. just my 2 cents

    I've been waiting for a review like this to come out for the last few weeks - so let me start by saying thank you. There seems to be this preoccupation with saying that Canon didn't catch up to industry leaders like the A7r II or the D810 in terms of dynamic range or resolution. Secondly, the current reviews out there (I won't mention who) have this tendency to mark features such as video crop or the limitations of Dual-pixel raw as deal breakers for those shopping around.
    For myself, I am astrophotographer who has enjoyed the 70D, 5D Mark III but was looking for something to enter the full frame market for canon that would improve on shadow, and low light noise that was an ongoing issue that had to be addressed in post with my 5D Mark III and 70D.
    You honestly, yet critically discussed what this camera can do and what it should have done better while not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. For that, I tip my hat to you Jared.
    Cheers man

    5D mk IV is a well-rounded & truly amazing camera ... if it came out 2 years ago. At this point, it's only worth an upgrade if you're heavily invested in Canon glass & don't like the performance of adapters onto a Sony camera. Nikon FF has IMHO the best selection of FF DSLR cameras. For mirrorless, go Sony. They're lens selection is finally being expanded & will likely have a more complete line-up by the next year or so.

    I have a few reasons why I'm moving away from Canon. I'm a hybrid shooter, need to be able to switch from photo to video and back to photo quickly with good features for both. Canon adding 4K is funny to me without putting in their C-Log and some video features like while-filming zebras and peaking (not sure if it has histogram while filming as well, but in case that's missing, it's missing!) Not to say the 4K is useless, it's useful, but limited, where other cheaper cameras have 4K without these limitations. I worked with the mkiii for 3 years and the quality is amazing in both video and photo. BUT, that was 4 years ago, and the mkiv did not mature 4 years I feel, if you know what I mean.

    My 70D has an articulated touchscreen which is extremely practical. And it has an inbuilt flash - which I don't use THAT often, but it IS awfully nice in some situations. These cameras don't have any of this, so I'm afraid none of them are for me.

    Question: Without a focus assist light built into the camera (mark III or mark IV), and without being able to use the Canon speed light on the hot shoe b/c you need to use the hot shoe for the Profoto Air Remote to fire the B1 Kit, should I be worried that this camera may fail to achieve auto focus in dynamic low light conditions, such as a wedding reception venue.?

    I got my new refurb D5 Mk III for $1899 from the Canon store on 12/23. They had extra discounts for a week. Upgrading from my trusty 5D. The Mk IV is just not worth the extra price to me. I was fine with the 5D but wanted a better AF system which is the ONLY weak point of the 5D to me. I wish Canon would make a 5D with the AF system of the Mk IV and leave the video function entirely out of the cam to reduce price. That would be the optimal cam for me!!

    I think your overall conclusion makes sense - it's worth upgrading from the mk iii if your income depends on the photos you produce, but if you're an amateur with a low or average income (like me) then it probably isn't worth it. Also, I note that the USA RRP in USD is less than what the Canon store is selling it for in GBP. This means that the mk iv costs just shy of US$5000 if you buy it in the UK through the official store! I'm not planning on upgrading right now, but I think when I do it will be to the mk 3 as it seems better value for money. However, my 600D still has plenty left to give if I treat it to some nice glass ;-)

      I know how you feel. Started out with canon eos 1000 loved it until I ran it over with my car. Then was looking for a new camera, came on youtube to look at some reviews.
      The nikon and sony users thought their cameras were the best. But after watching videos and reading comments I found that sony had heating problems and nikon oil spots.
      Myy 1000 had no hardware problems just dust on sensor which was a easy fix. So stuck with canon now own 1300D and 80D both I love.
      Just want a camera you can shoot anytime anywhere and know it will work. Don't see anything in other systems that will make leave canon, especaily now I have more canon glass. Happy shooting.

      James Sanders I'm also on a budget but am patient and disciplined I bought a 24-70 and 70-200 which took me three years to save up. If I could do it again I think I would go tamron or sigma, lots of savings. The tamron 70-300 is a good cheap lens I hear, it has image stablization Which the canon 75-300 doesn't at least on mine.

      James Sanders Mine came as kit with EOS 1000 I think thats t3 in the states not sure. But tamron or sigma recommend on a budget. I'm buying one macro and the tamron 150-300mm 5.6 to go with my 11-24, 24-70 and 70-200 all at f4 then I'll be satisfied I've covered most bases. when finally done it would've taken ten years.
