Yes! It was bloody awful, unusable IMO. I don't think it was focus hunting, but in fact the sides / corners getting further / closer to the sensor and thus changing how blurred the background is. It is SO warpy it made me feel seasick.

@@mattdebyl8806 You can check other reviews where they test this and it doesn't appear to do it. Maybe he had it in a weird AF mode... Honestly, this review seems very throw away. It didn't seem in depth like the others at all. He didn't go over how amazing the IBIS + Lens IS is.. Taking 640mm still on the RF 100-400 hand held at 1/50 and it being sharp is pretty damn impressive. Nor did he go into tracking birds, which is basically what this camera was designed for. Dunno, just seemed kind of sloppily put together.

Canon never "opened" the EF mount to 3rd party lens makers, yet those manufacturers still managed to make a ton of lenses for it. How? They reverse engineered it.
No doubt the 3rd party lens makers will do the same with the RF mount. In fact, two already have. Both Viltrox and Yongnuo have intro'd autofocus lenses for Canon R-series cameras. If they can do it, so can Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and all the rest.

Recent discovery - you *can* have three control dials active at once in the R7's Manual mode to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO simultaneously with the histogram live all the time. Here's how:
This setup relies on using the control ring on the lens as the third control dial, so on lenses like the R7's kit lens that use the control ring for focusing, you sacrifice manual focusing, but with lenses that have separate focus and control rings there's no sacrifice. That's any EF or EF-S lens with the EF to R Control Ring adapter, and any RF lens with both focus and control rings - like my Canon RF 100-400mm lens.
(Actually, other than the two RF-S kit lenses this isn't a problem, since most RF lenses have both rings, and the five that have only one have a switch on the lens to switch its use between Manual Focus and Control Ring.)
To set this up, go to page 6 of the AF tab in the settings screen and set the Focus/Control ring to Control rather than the default Focus setting.
Then go to page 3 of the Camera tab and in Customize Dials you set the three dials up however you like. Since I used a pre-EOS Canon FT-QL for nearly forty years before going digital, and thus I'm used to having an aperture ring on the lens, I set the Control ring on the lens to AV. Since I'm used to setting the shutter speed on the top of the camera, I set the Main Dial to TV, and I put ISO control on the Quick Control Ring around the joystick next to the viewfinder. (Film cameras changed the ISO by changing the film you were using!)
But you can assign those three functions between those three dials however you like.
PS If you frequently want to focus manually with a lens that has only one ring, you can set one of your Custom Settings up to use the Control Ring on the lens for focusing and use the other two control dials however you prefer.

Nice overview! Definitely a very tempting camera for the type of video I do. Too bad about the rolling shutter in oversampled video but at least they give the option of subsampling like what's in my current M6ii. I don't assume the current Sony APS-C do and they definitely have the same issue with oversampled 4k. Canon support had said it can record duplicate video to the two SD cards which seems like a very nice feature (Anyone with an R7 want to confirm that?). Also having in-camera h.265 HEVC is appealing for smaller video files.

Hi guys, thank you for your reviews of the R7 and 10. I'm confused as to why you (or any other reviewer I've watched or read) don't mention that the R10 has an in-built flash while the R7 doesn't. My partner and I regularly use the in-built flashes on our cameras (EOS 50D with a 70-300mm lens and a Panasonic FZ300) to fill in lighting or darken backgrounds for macro photography. I understand that a separate, dedicated flash will be vastly superior in a lot of ways, but not in convenience. An in-built flash is always available, you don't have to remember to bring it or spend time attaching it, possibly missing your shot. Why is so little (i.e. no) attention given to such a handy feature on the camera, and, for that matter, why do you think Canon decided to leave it off the R7, while it looks like there is ample space to install one? Our ideal here would be the R7 with an in-built flash... Canon, are you listening???? Cheers, Marco.

What mic were you using for this video? Audio sounded different (more background noise) than usual, as far as I could tell. Also maybe somewhat less higher end in Jordan's voice in this video??? And as a side note for those people who might be interested in Vlogging, I think that getting the cheap and cheerful EF-S 10-18 STM IS and putting it on an adapter would be good. There was an awful lot of corner warping in the vlogging section that Jordan demonstrated and maybe using a lens with good IS like the EF-S 10-18 would help reduce it??? (Plus you get the wider field of view than the kit lens that comes with the R7). I adapt the Canon EF-S 10-18 on my Panasonic S-series cameras and that lens does reduce the corner warping significantly (as opposed to using JUST the camera's IBIS for stabilization with wide angle lenses).

For an EF adapted lens test, that old 85mm 1.8 isn’t the best AF out there on wider apertures.
It’s best in very bright & contrasty lighting, especially in live view on the 90D and 1DX iii, but the CA on that lens gets more noticeable in those cases (I sold mine for that reason).
I’ve been using some EF / EF-S STM lenses, the EF 70-200mm 2.8 L v3 lens, and for giggles a 2003 28-75mm 2.8 Tamron, and I haven’t had any issues accurately nailing eye AF on the R7.
    2 other notes:
    - I tried my R7 with the 100-500mm RF
4.5-7.1 L and it is an Amazing combo.
    - IBIS worked nicely with a pair of my old M42 adapted manual lenses (55mm 1.8 and 135mm 2.8)

Interestingly I have no problems with the mode dial or the new control ring- might be more a fault with the reviewer than the camera. The on/off switch and the AF/DOf switch on the other hand i personally have found to be a bit annoying. Coming from an optical viewfinder I am not sold on the electronic one yet. I feel underwhelmed by the sharpness of the 18-150 at the wide end hope they bring out some better quality options for the wide end. My EF primes 400 F5.6 & 600 F4 seem to work flawlessly am happy with the AF and sharpness.

Thanks so much! Finally an honest review pointing out some of the quirks which looked off from the get go. For me it's way out of my reach for now (having just switched from M50 to 7D2), but your thoughts already make it less worthy to aspire to in the future. And you still haven't touched some other drawback like appalling small buffer. I really start to wonder why Canon undercooked it so much having given it IBIS, AI AF and other fantastic features...

@@ADivaForLife I only loved it until I got the 7D2, now I don't have much use for it at all. AF for bird photography is a hit and miss. I did manage to get a few good shots, but mostly contrasty birds against the blue sky etc. In the foliage, it would miss even bright red parrots. If I was shooting street or portraits more often, I'd probably keep it, but I'm selling the M50.

It is really a wonderful review and many aspects have been explained. I am presently using 7D ii + 100 - 400 mm ii + 1.4 iii extender (occasionally). With this combination, I feel out of camera photos are not so good beyond ISO 1600. Do you think, it will be a substantial upgrade if I switch over to R7 without changing the lens? Understand that autofocus will be much better with R7. However, my main concern is IQ at low light and subsequently high ISO performance. I am predominantly engaged in bird photography. Great review, when I compare your Sensor video with this one, basically GH6 vs R7, I was surprised! Usually, Canon has this magic sauce with the picture detail thickness, but not this time. To my old laptop, your other video shot on GH6 looks better and less mushy with a more detailed picture. I was expecting the opposite, but this is the Canon Cripple hammer I guess. ! lol.

There aren’t any reviews for photo and none comparing the canon to the 2 viltrox. Now canon has good crop bodies but limited crop lenses. You are correct that Canon needs to develop some additional RF-S lenses. They might have the means to do so quickly... Simply adapt some of their EF-M lenses.
Actually they might have done just that with the RF-S 18-150mm... It appears very similar to the EF-M 18-150mm.
Now if Canon would just do the same thing with the EF-M 11-22mm, EF-M 22mm, EF-M 28mm Macro and EF-M 32mm f/1.4. RF-S versions of each of those would answer a lot of immediate needs.
It would be great, too, if Sigma and Viltrox each came out with RF-S versions of their EF-M lenses. Especially the Sigma 16mm and 56mm, Viltrox 56mm. Sigma has yet to produce an autofocus lens for RF mount. But Viltrox has their full frame capable AF 85mm f/1.8 RF II.
Of course there are also already more than a few reasonably affordable full frame-capable Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 Macro IS STM ($599), RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM ($549), RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM ($499), RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM ($399), RF 16mm f/2.8 STM ($299), and 50mm f/1.8 STM ($179).
Finally, there are some fairly affordable full frame telephoto options too... Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM ($599}, RF 600mm f/11 IS STM ($699) and RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM ($799).
All those full frame lenses will work just as well on the APS-C cameras, as they do on full frame. Maybe even better, since the crop trims off the edges and corners where most affordable lenses are their weakest.
But, why oh why did Canon feel the need to mess with good, familiar control layout? The joystick in the middle of the E.C. dial was a concern to me and you have confirmed it can be a problem. I agree about the lock mechanism in the mode dual, too. For years we asked for that on the DSLRs before they finally implemented it (on the 6th or 7th gerneration?) Now they take a leap backward? Hello, Canon!
Dunno about the off/on/video switch, personally. So I'll take your word for it being another thing to gripe about.
The final thing that bugs me is that Canon could easily have made this camera compatible with the BG-R10 battery grip used by the R6 & R5. The footprint of the R7 is surprisingly close to the same as those full frame models. If they had dine that and upgraded the resolution of the EVF, I bet people would have gladly paid more. It would have been more of a mirrorless 7D Mk II, rather than the mirrorless 90D it seems to be. (Canon tried to tell us the 90D was the successor to both 80D and 7DII, too, didn't they?)

I'm probably going to be getting mixed up with the power switch because I have the R and I change my ISO with the dial that's in the same position on the top right. I'll be curious to see how it plays with my Sigma lenses, I have a 50, and a 150-600 and I've been using them more than most of my RF lenses. I won't be getting any APS-C specific lenses, where I have a full frame, I want to make sure all my lenses work on both, so I think my best bet would be the 15-35mm. Although I really want to see how it works with the Sigma 50 as the bokeh is fantastic, and using the R body, the photos looked identical to Canon's RF 50 1.2, it's just that Sigma is 1.4 and heavier, but that's a small price to pay considering that price is basically half and I got mine used.

As per the video, (4:59) there's not much of a different. But the new processor is better for jpeg. Even if it's the same sensor, the one in the M6 II & 90D is already a pretty good sensor for an APS-C, may be a little limiting at higher ISO but forgivable given how much pixels it has.

Please explain how a camera that focuses with its imaging sensor - not separate focusing sensors in the base of the camera - can "back focus" because of the mount type of the lens.
This part of your review almost made me reconsider my body-only order for the R7 - which I would use with my EF and EF-S lenses - 3 of each, including the 18-135 nanoUSM EF-S.
But then I realized that since the camera is focusing the lens based on how sharp the image is on the imaging sensor, your review makes no sense in that regard.

I hope Canon can give us something like a 10-24-ish f4 (which would be like a 16-40 equiv.) zoom lens for this body, and some fast aperture primes and this camera becomes a whole lot more compelling. It's too bad about the EVF, really the only significant negative for me on this camera. A viewfinder with a 3.69mil dot resolution and solid refresh rate (at least 60fps, maybe a high speed 120fps mode at 2.4mil dots) would've made this camera nearly perfect for me.
Either way I think I will end up picking this up sooner or later, probably the most appealing Canon RF body to me (R5 a bit too expensive; R3 too big & expensive etc.) despite a few of the drawbacks talked about here. The ergonomic issues may bother Jordan more than me though it is odd Canon seem to change random little things about the layout of the camera. I thought the R3 figured it out with the brilliant touch enabled AF-On button, which should become something of an industry standard in my opinion.

One of the things that you didn’t comment upon is having an R7 when you already own a Canon R Mount and full frame R Mount L lenses. I also think that it would be nice to know which EF-L lenses gave you trouble on the R7 and which EF-L lenses work well. I think that it would be very interesting to understand this for existing Canon owners. I think that we have heard a lot of positives about this body but it sounds like you have problems with using more expensive full frame lenses on this APS-C sensor. I kind of understand some of your argument but if you already own either R or EF L series lenses for other bodies then this might not be a problem.

I don’t think that you are even trying to be fair by referring to it as crap. I think that Canon has done an interesting thing to put a high quality focus system and an APS-C sensor together for $1500. My experience with Canon L glass in the EF and R Mount has been really good. I still am deciding on what my mirrorless body will be. I have the Sony A7iii and am primarily a stills photography user. I shoot almost totally EF-L glass on my 5D III and 5DIV. Same on the Sony A7iii via the Metabones V adapter. I have both the standard and adjustment ring adapters for the EF to R Mount. I have tried the EOS R, R6, and R5 with the 24-70, and 70-200 zooms and the 85mm F1.2 R Mount lenses. I have not found a problem with my wide collection of EF-L glass on any of the R bodies. Moreover, the R Lenses that I tried are all spectacular. My comments about the R7 review is that it’s focused upon the R7 as an entry level camera but it is also a camera that works well for sports with the 1.6 X magnifications and existing pros might well find it useful for their kit with telephoto lenses especially older faster EF lenses.

Canon never built serious lenses for their aps-c DSLRs, and they had years to do so. They were mostly keenly priced glass like the 10-18mm and the 24mm and 40mm pancakes, or you had to go EF and accept the crop and price - in which case why not go full frame? I'm not against apsc-c, I recently bought a tiny 100D to accept those same pancake lenses, but they need some no-compromise wide aperture primes if they're to compete in the video market.
