Would love a comparison of R7 with R6 for a casual wildlife photography enthusiast (if that’s even a thing!). Also, would love to understand the total cost of ownership with recommended canon and 3rd party lenses for each of these bodies. Curious about what body + lens combos makes best sense for someone who wants to use this as a primary camera (like for birthdays, family trips, weekend getaways, kids sports, kids portraits, fall photography, etc.) along with wildlife/sports oriented trip like birding, safaris, skiing, racing, etc. So hard to find this kind of a comparison online and I suspect this is the market Canon is targeting with the R7 and R6 (albeit for a more serious enthusiast).

    • @montagdp

Agreed. The body itself is better than the M50 II, but it's also bigger, uglier (IMO), and more expensive. The kit zoom range is really limiting. A big no from me so far. If my M50 died today I'd be looking into other systems.

A very excellent First Impression Review !
After waiting for a Sony A7000 for so long (in December 2019 I had bought a Sony A6600 out of desperation) and thinking about a Sony A7 IV or a GH6 for the last few months, the R7 seems to be the closest to my needs , if the R7 together with the adapter works well with old EF lenses. So, besides Nikon FF (D800), MFT and Sony APS-C lenses, I have to think about joining the Canon system.

    • @kaneclements7761
      @kaneclements7761 2 года назад +1

I recently moved to Sony and got a used excellent condition A7R IV for a about £2000. Unless the weight is an issue the 60MP IV will give you an edge on quality over APS-C.
If you are shooting wild life one has to get closer, use better glass and get more MP. I think going down the APS-C route can, note can, be a bit of a blind alley.

The xt4 is a far superior camera to the R7. The fact that it is back side illuminating is a huge deal and ALONE worth paying a little extra for. Besides that fuji glass especially the 16-55mm f2.8 is so sharp that the xt4 can’t even take full advantage of it. Also 400mb bit rate in 4:2:0 10bit h265 is pretty nuts and all that in 4k60p.

Fuji XT4 has a lot of impressive specs but one thing it does not have is good ergonomics.
The 16-55mm f2.8 is also interesting lens but its pretty old when compared to Samsung 16-50mm F2-2.8 considering the Fuji one is larger. Sony also has some really small f2.8 zooms for their APS-C's, and with stabilisation, if Fuji made a camera with a regular body with good grip and a F2.8 zoom with built in stab and small size, it be a killer system honestly.

S5 AF is good if you tell it what to do, as long as you got light and contrast it can get the job done well, I agree its not perfect but its like, these days you buy a camera with compromises, its just matter of what compromises you can live with.

Sure there are better options in lenses but I’m saying if you’re looking at an R7 specifically this cannot compete with an xt4. Also that IBIS in the xt4 is really good at 5.5 stops. I had an S5 as well and I enjoy and prefer the image coming out of the xt4 much more. The dynamic range out of the x trans sensor is pretty damn impressive. Not as much as the S5 but certainly better than a canon R line camera.

I LIVE using the main rear dial on my Z's! I have it setup to work in S and A priority modes. This is a great review because that might be a deal breaker for me. Having something important on a dial that doesn't lock is not good as most have experienced on the Z lenses custom dial. I find the front/top dial much less ergonomic than Nikons too. Not having a locking exposure compensation dial on EVERY camera is a bit strike. I wish these had a warm LED flash/fill/model lamp on them. I'm going to try one out anyway!
What APS-C's really needs is a pro level 15-75mm f4 or f2-4 lens. That way you get a better size and performance balance. Sigma's 17-70 was very popular for this reason as was Nikon's 17-55f2.8DX.

First, thank you for great review. And to Fuji for investing in better sensor and chip technology ! As far as portraits and landscape shots I really, really enjoy my Fuji X--T4 and older gear's results.
    Comments:
    1. If we can screw on a fan why can't we screw on a modular screen? (i.e. have a flippy screen version and a X-T3 style screen which we can buy separately),
So neither photographers nor videographers need to compromise for latest tech?
    2. Instead of eliminating SS, ISO, and exposure dials, Why not have 3 tactile (clicky) dials each with LED on top (LED would display SS, ISO, Exposure)
By making dials with displays, the quick settings C1-C7 would have maximum positive effect, and people who like dials (many people who buy Fuji for similarly to film cameras)
I suppose something like that could be done on aperture ring as well: have infinite turn, with an LED F# on the lens: thus aperture settings can be set by camera or manually with.
i.e. apparent trend to eliminate aperture ring is worrying.
    3. While it is tactile, making the S,C,M switch a button gives the setting C1-C7 modes max positive effect, so I support this new design decision. Also S,C,M switch has always looked a little weak.
    4. Having the back dial on the X-H2S not be clickable is fine with me: I find on my X-t4 it is hard to tell if the force I'm applying is going to click it or rotate dial. The larger focus nub looks good on the X-H2S. Standardize it!
The suggestions above would reduce some of the parts needed between various X-T cameras.
In a supply-chain constrained world, with a lot of camera competition, having fewer Fuji models would help Fuji's R&D efforts stay better focused. Where possible standardize on what makes fanbase passionate.
    5. Even if my X-T4 doesn't have processing power of X-H2S, please backport improved AF algorithms. Adding even an additional slower mode (but much more accurate focus!!) would help those of us who want to do light sport shooting, or just take pics of graduations where there are a lot of people in picture. Promises were made about AF improvements in X-T4 that are merely incremental compared to Sony and Canon's order of magnitude improvements. Backport improvements where possible to maintain the brand PASSION that got you where you are.
Keep at it Fuji on the R&D side: keep innovating and pushing what is possible on your cameras & lenses.

The deal breaker is the R7 price is pretty good as the eos 7dii was apx £1,400 on launch. As I am 7Dii owner the R7 makes a lot sense and would be a great upgrade. Before the this event the only option I had wax R6 at £2,500not a very affordable route. The R6 is fantastic for wildlife, birds. I am really impressed with it. Plus it doubles as a great landscape portrait camera too. It took me a little while to get used to full frame, as you feel like you are losing something but you really aren’t in reality. I am hoping the R7 shares the image quality of the full frame and I would definitely pick one up and move my R6 over to just macro, landscapes and portraits only. I do miss those APS sensors for sure!

I have a 800D today and are looking to upgrade in the future. The full format cameras in Canons line may be too expensive so one of theese may be more suitable. My biggest problem with my current 800D is the noise. Anything above ISO200 get noisy as hell, and without professional glass its really hard to photograph birds and other wildlife. Especially if you may want to crop some afterwards. It will be really interesting to see what kind of low light / nosie performance theese two cameras have once the full reviews come out.

To me, this is to just get the low end, beginner market again, especially with the R10. I can't see them fleshing out the APS-C RF lens line-up, just as they didn't do a lot with the DSLR APS-C lenses. The R7 could be useful for birders and people that need the extra reach of the crop though.. I have a Canon 70D, and will be going to Full frame as soon as I can scrounge enough money to make the transfer with a couple of lenses, but it's most likely going to be Sony Full Frame. I may consider something like a R10 as a replacement for my 70D as a short term upgrade, (if it is an upgrade for me) but here in Australia, The R7 is only $100 less than a Sony A7III, so I wouldn't want to spend that kind of money for a stop gap camera, I would just spend the money on going full frame.

I‘m not sure if you‘re all right with the buffer. I looked at the spec sheet. With 15 fps it‘s possible to shoot 12 seconds in c-raw before the buffer is filled. No matter if electronic or mechanical. And this time you can change the burst rate with electronic shutter too. This are about 200 pictures in 12 seconds in c-raw. What other camera in this price range can do this?
And the 30 fps are great for focus stacking and pre capture. In c-raw you can take 2 or 3 seconds of pictures if i remember right. More than enought to nail the action. Can the Z9 take 30 fps in RAW? Or our three times more expensive R5? Not even for one second if i remember right.
Maybe it‘s not that worse like it sounds at the first look 😉

r6 = 30 minute record limit, less fps for photos, less megapixels, 1000usd more, no digital hotshoe.

Great and detailed first impression! One question: why did you test the buffers using C-RAW and not regular RAW?

      I believe it’s buffer is about 100 for c-raw.
