I'm a long-time film SLR user (1968-2003) with a Canon FT-QL. My main walk-around lens was the FL 85mm f/1.8. Switched to the Digital Rebels (XT to XTi to T4i), then to the 70D and then 80D. Over time, my cameras got progressively bigger and heavier until I got the R7 this summer - it's actually smaller and lighter than the FT-QL, and the kit lens is about the same size as the FL 85mm. With the RF nifty-fifty - basically the same angle of view on Canon APS-C as the 85mm on the FT - it's even smaller than that rig.
I love the fast "eye auto focus," and I've have discovered that I can map the controls to feel like my FT-QL: I've set the control ring on my lenses to control the f/stop, the main dial on the top deck for shutter speed, and the ring around the joystick for ISO. The histogram in the viewfinder is a more informative version of the exposure needle in the FT (I run in Manual exposure mode), and the Exposure Simulation/Depth of Field simulation in the viewfinder saves having to press the DOF button.
I've even been able to start taking pictures of birds in flight (seagulls), with the RF 100-400 lens, something I've never even attempted before.

I have the R7 and love it but started hearing about not getting the R10. I bought that one too and love it. Very light and I like it better than the Nikon Z30 and the Sony ZV-E10. I love my Nikon Zfc but the R10 is making me pick it up every day. R7 is better and I do not mind one sd card in the R10. The R7 and R10 show when it is overheating which I believe helps the users tremendously. The other cameras when video recording will shut off and stop the recording without warning. Hi Christopher , thanks for the review , its refreshingly positive as on youtube at the moment so many reviewers seem to be all for burning Canon at the stake for their stand on third party glass. What ever Canons reasons be it perceived greed (their own relatively expensive RF glass) or a resistance to IP theft we’ll never know but their bottom line will tell the story one way or the other, for me I can get done what needs doing happily with RF and EF glass. However I sympathise with people finding their third party lens suddenly not working properly, something morally not right there on Canons part . I got the R7 as an affordable back-up body in case my R5 goes tits-up in the middle of an event very happy with it.

Next, focusing on people walking on the street - face head body tracking is perfect. Heavy airliners landing 7 miles away - absolute fantastic tracking and focus. No red tail hawk today nor birds to test. I am shooting through a thick office glass with very poor weathered tint film. Focus is amazing. Tracking is amazing. Just my two cents: I recently held a Canon R7 in a showroom, looking for a second body to my R6, and I found the cheap feeling of the body off putting. The specs are great but one of the most important aspects of a camera to me, someone who holds a camera for up to 12-13 hours a day during shoots is how it feels in the hands and unfortunately it just doesn’t feel like a professional camera to me. Shame because again, the specs are really impressive.

isn't the 18-150 mm is very soft? The version for EOS-M is very very soft. I get the same amount of detail out of my very old Olympus XZ-1 (10 MP sensor) at 4x zoom as with Canon M50 mark II with this lens at 150 mm (~9x zoom). The later has a 24 MP sensor so it should be miles ahead of the old Olympus pocket camera, but in reality the softness of the lens make the camera and the zoom capability useless. Maybe for video work the zoom is useful, but for stills that lens it is really a disappointment.

Well I said I would never buy another crop sensor camera but coming from the 6D Mk II (which I will keep for low light, indoor wide angle pics), the appeal of IBIS for stills and being able to convert the long end of my 100-400 4.5-5.6 L to a 640 mm proved too strong to resist. So now I have an R7 and EF to RF mount adapter incoming. I don't really care about the video 4k, recording limits, etc etc. To me, mirrorless/SLR's are primarily for stills and trying to hybridize them to do video is a sketchy endeavor that never seems to hit the mark as well as dedicated video machines are capable of.

Regarding built quality: My R7 took a huge fall when the handle bar pack on my bike loosened and the camera during this fall came out of the bag and fell on the asphalt. After 12 years of waiting I've finally upgraded my Canon body.
Back in 2011 I bought an entry level Rebel and for the last decade I've been keeping tabs on the performance of the 7D and 7DMkII, and the 80D and 90D, which after getting a Fuji on discount the Canon equivalents never satisfied my desires for an upgrade, until now.
While I am deeply disappointed with the lack of a BSI sensor, the R7 is otherwise a perfect storm of features.
I now require HDR-PQ support for best viewing on OLED displays, I require high pixel density for macro and wildlife, and it needs a big battery, and the flip screen, and while IBIS is not a requirement of my shooting style I'm sure I will find it very useful.
Sony and Nikon crop bodies fail on several counts, Fuji was so close and in fact I'd prefer the X-H2 if only they had HDR-PQ support, alas they don't and I now have an R7 in the mail.
As long as Canon keeps the price the same and upgrades to a 40MP Stacked Sensor then I'll happily upgrade to the R7 MkII when it inevitably comes in 3-4 years.

If I was in the market for this camera for stills work and events, I wouldn't mind using the adapter, getting the Sigma 1.8 DSLR twins and calling it a day. They were my favorite combination during my old 7Dii days prior to 2018 save for AF issues (primarily due to the DSLR method of AF, at least on my copies. This should theoretically be a non issue on Mirrorless.) To this day I'm still very impressed by the images those lenses got me. Absolutely worth the compromise on weight and with IBIS in the R7, they'd be great. You'll get wonderful used copies too now at decent prices. But do check Chris's reviews on those two lenses first. The 18-35 is an easier lens to recommend than the 50-100.

I've tried shooting landscapes with the 18-150mm kit lens and I find the results are good but not stellar. I find the kit lens (my copy at least) has a tremendous amount of chromatic aberration and is not very sharp in the corners.
Can you recommend a lens that would be better suited for landscape photography (adapted or not) but wouldn't brake the bank (lens expensive than the rf 15-35 f/2.8 or the rf 14-35mm f4)?
In your opinion would the rf 16mm f/2.8 deliver better results than the 18-150mm kit lens?
    Thanks

Just got my Fuji XH2 today but I have RF bodies and lenses so it's interesting to know what Canon has put out. With their whole third party debacle, the more budget friendly APSC cameras are not all that appealing to me hence why I have put my money towards the Fuji X system again. I have to say, I absolutely am in love with XH2 already and I hope you do pick one up so you can really challenge the optics on X mount.
Thank you for all that you do Mr. Frost.

Do you think the 100-400 with the F8 at the longer end is enough for wildlife as complementary lens to a RF 800 or the more heavy but also "better" option with F6.3 at the Sigma 150-600 on APS-C with even more reach than the RF 800 on full frame?
As much im interested in the Sigma, it just fits also nicer on full frame, the RF-S 18-150 also looks interesting for APS-C as super small universal lens or just the 100-400 to share on the EOS RP and R7 depending on the needs.
If canon would just release proper F2.8 to F4 prime teles for RF-S with DO technic...

If i could afford i would go for a EF 400mm F4L DO or at least a F5.6, but the 6.3 on the sigma also sounds interesting, on the R7 super awesome for wildlife and on the EOS RP a nice universal tele if im fine with the 2kg and huge size

Have no fear Mr. Frost, and anyone else whom may be concerned on the build quality. Canon is known for their prowess and expertise in the use of plastic stuff. Remember the older Elan and similar 35 MM film cameras, with the battery door and its plastic hinge/!? Cheeeaaaaap! Key to Canon’s remaining Solvent.
yep, used to be like the poster child for Canon. Not so much anymore. Gonna go grab my Fuji, Olympus, or maybe my Nikon, and go out shooting. * Looks at the 5D4 sitting on the tripod, w/ 70-200 lens *.
Great review, nonetheless. It is a shame that the R10 is another victim of its parent’s ‘crippling,’ as I don’t think the inclusion of a few better features, would have harmed the R7 sales. Oh well, the saga goes on and on…. Best! Cheers

What about something more floating jazz? A ballad or something like that? Regards from Svend

Lack of affordable native RF aps-c lenses is a big negative for both the R7 and R10. Canon to date has shut down any attempt by 3rd party aps-C lens manufacturers.as well. I purchased the R7 along with the 18-150 and 100-400 lenses thinking my existing aps-c lenses would work with the adapter. Nope. Too soft. Then found out a lot of buyers had the same issue. Meaning, even if you want to take advantage of existing EF mount lenses, only more expensive FF will resolve properly. Something people new to the mirrorless camera market should take into consideration.
Make no mistake, this is a great camera, but long term, competitors are offering aps-c cameras with just a good features, along with more affordable native lens options. Canon has had 4 years to ramp up things. The lack of affordable lens issue will not go away. Hopefully with supply chain issues easing up we will see more affordable high quality aps-c options from Canon in the near future. Or better yet allow 3rd party lenses like they do for the EF/s mount. For the short term, Canon is more worried about it's stock price than anything else. (Did a huge stock buy back recently, companies only do that to raise stock prices short term).

I'm worried about the physical make-up of the RF-S lenses as they're all polycarbonate aka plastic - even the lens mount itself is plastic. What about durability versus a metal flange on the lens mount? All my EF lenses have a metal mounting. I know the body flange on the R7 is metal and would like to have metal to metal and not metal to plastic.

Tell me about it. Better lowlight performance, IBIS, better battery for longer shoots, dual card slots for redundant shooting...and that's only half the differences right there, specs upgrades not withstanding. And the M50 is still a great little shooter, but I had a hard time shooting with it because of how small it is. I literally never used the viewfinder, and it wasn't by choice.
