I would love to see your opinion on the fujifilm X-H2S it seems to be an incredible camera for video and I'd love to see a comparison with the FX30 and the R7.
@McSnapples canon offers more dumb proof, turn on and shoot AF tracking of them all. No Google search, no RUclips tutorial, no tweaking a million settings, straight out of retail box, af track does what it says on the surface, autofocus, tracking, no fuss no bells n whistles
@McSnapples the skill set and vision of great photographers aren't related to manual exposure or manual focus speed, that's called camera operater. Contrary to your belief, if Bresson was alive today, I believe he would choose Canon or Sony because they both let him focus on the real important stuff, the decisive moments, less time fiddling with camera settings. Camera is only a tool end of the day.
@McSnapples all the pro products you mentioned are adding more and more auto functions into their newest offering than the last generation. Those niche brands don't have the technology Canon and Sony have otherwise they would add AF tracking without blinking an eye. Fujifilm included. Gfx 100s keep improving their af capabilities firmware after firmware, now it is about 3 generations behind Sony FF in AF. Leica is no longer competing in the professional world anymore, a high end pricetag doesn't mean they are in the hands of top photographers, they are more on the shelf of dentists, lawyers, politicians' home. Even Leica SL series have had major AF improvement over the years.

I think I'd probably get the FX30. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about it since I currently shoot a Lumix S5 and it's leaving my wanting more. The third party lens option just isn't really there for Panasonic, and I kind of want the ability to go out and buy something like a Viltrox 33mm f1.4 or something to test some different focal lengths. I have a few EF lenses for Canon and I could get an adapter for the R7, but I think the FX30 would be more useful too. Especially with the autofocus.
For Panasonic you have sigma 16-23-30-56mm f1.4 for L-mount Lumix S5 is a full frame camera but you can choose to use it like an apsc camera. It’s cheaper than the fx30 + better dynamic range + more cinema features + AF in apsc mode is good
We need more cameras in the is price bracket included. Literally just got an S5 and will be selling my a74 and a7c. Cannot fathom that the fx30 or r7 would beat the s5 or compete price wise It's so much more focused for video work than these two. Love your stuff but would love you to revisit this camera system. Except the micro hdmi. That's utter pants x
I’ve been on Sony for going on 2.5 years now because of the lens offerings, but man every time I watch a Canon vs Sony video I always feel conflicted because I always end up liking the canon image quality and colors so much better. If canon either opened their lens mount to third parties or could produce better budget lenses for RF mount I would probably switch over but right now Sony is just a far more diverse and robust mount in terms of lens options.
@@jkagwen for video this works (mostly), but for photos it gets tiring having to do this across multiple images even with batch processing. Also as much as I love shooting in Log/flat profiles and grading in post, sometimes I just want to capture a quick clip of my kid playing in standard color and be able to send it off to family without having to touch it up. I don’t mind Sony’s color but when I look at the standard profile comparison in this video the Canon image just looks better to me.
Personally I am looking at the Canon R7, Canon R6 Mark 2 and Two Sony A74's as I do photography both Street photography and Portraits. I am currently using the Nikon D5500 which is a beast of a camera. For street photography and street portraits
Kind of an unfair comparison with the SOOC footage. The FX30 does have a "standard" mode as well that's much more similar to Canon's "standard", S-Cinetone is its own thing.
I realize this is going to sound very juvenile.... but here goes! I had a sony zv1 for vlogging and basic family photos... then 1 morning the lens decided to screw up and move itself in and out without anyway to get into the menu to try and reset it. So I sent it in for a $400 repair and decided 2 things. ONE. buy a new camera that has a removeable lens so this wont happen again. and TWO (this is the juvenile part) Buy a Canon! I was mad at Sony and their service which is basically non existent at my local camera shop. So after watching many reviews, Including yours. I opted for an R7 with an EF 10-18 mm lens because of the crop and an EF adapter with the removable ND/clear filter. I also added a EF 35mm for family photos and macro and a Tamron 18-200 mm Telephoto for outdoor shooting. So thanks for the great videos...always a hoot. Now I just need to learn how to fly my Mavic Air 2 with the confidence you fly your drone and I'll be just like you.. LOL Take care and keep up the great work!
I would go with the FX30 just because its more center focus on video than photography. R7 can do both media but its body was designed to be a photo-first camera before video. Having that fan, red tally lights and button layout for filming really helps a lot. As much as these new cameras can dissipate heat better now, i still prefer to have a fan to help cool the camera better because you never know when you're going to be in 90+ degree weather.
was in Morocco this summer with temperatures going way above 100 degrees.... didn't really notice a dfference when using my X-H1 compared to in colder climates.... the batteries drain faster but the camera didn't overheat any quicker
@@LoFiAxolotl It's always better to have a fan rather than rely on a heat sink or mother nature alone. No matter how good a camera's body dissipate heat, it does have its limitations on how much it can release before being overload. Canon R5 is a good example of this. Colder Climates will help cameras cool down better as I was able to record with my Sony a7IV for 2 hours without any temp warning signs coming on. This is in Minnesota during last winter when the temp was at 7 degrees Fahrenheit. My question to you is, how long did you leave the camera on for recording? If you only record 5 minutes here and there, then it's not going to overheat. For me, I record at least 40 minutes of footage every hour with likely a 2-3 minute break between each recording. This is where your camera gets tested and when its a paid client gig, you will want your camera to be able to handle those long recordings without overheating.
I’m about to switch from Nikon to Sony. The Sony FX30 will be my first camera from their lineup that I try. There’s a few reason I rather go with Sony but the main one is auto focus. Thanks for the comparison video! ✌️😎
The lines are blurring. Great comparison, but as someone who has invested in sony crop last 3 years, I think the canon had the edge in a lot of scenarios. Its annoying as outside of in the studio, lack of stabilisation means I seldom take video out and about on my Sony which sucks. The ibis on the r7 looks real good. I've always liked the canon look, but features of the sony, now its even more tough lol. Thanks for the comparison dude.
Coming from the GH5 bought now the FX30 i think its the better option because the "Video" Body. Using it with the 18-35! the only lens i need! Its Amazing on a Gimbal!
Speed boosters won’t affect the depth of field but will give you more light. CVP done a great video on it. Also Meike have a great drop in rf adapter. Neat video!
Speedboosters does affect your fov - a 35 mm ff on an apsc would give a 52mm equiv fov , the 35 on a speedbooster would give you a 35mm equiv ( or close to it )
What do you have against Sony digital active stabilization? To me it’s essential unless I were on a tripod or gimbal. I get that it has a slight crop but it’s great.
Hopefully the Canon R7 has a firmware update where it gets 10 bit in all picture profiles instead of in the C-Log profile especially with the release of the Fuji S-20
Power (batteries, chargers, cables), Optics (lenses, filters, caps, director's viewfinder maybe?), T (could be Tape, Transfer, Technology, Techniques), A (Audio recorders, microphones, cables), T (tripods, tripod plates, and O (on-set, on-screen, or even on-going production needs)
The fX30 looks a little softer and more filmic while the R7 looks a little more like digital video. They both look good but the Sony has the slight edge
In regard to the number of lenses, I think it's a bit of a myth at this point that Canon has more lenses than Sony. I was an early adopter for mirrorless (coming to Sony from Canon), and I still remember the old days when there were gaps everywhere in the lineup (I remember being on a waiting list for the Zeiss 85mm back in the day so that I wouldn't have to adapt my Canon 85mm all the time). Even for me, I still remember that feeling of there not being a lot of lenses out there. But the times have changed. A quick query on B&H shows 222 new EF/EF-S lenses listed vs. 364 E/FE lenses. While I would agree Canon has released more EF lenses over time, that number is mostly padded by old versions of lenses, and doesn't necessary reflect what's available today. Plus Sony's embrace of third-party lenses has really filled out the roster, especially at the more reasonable price points. Also, a couple misses on the adapted lenses. While Canon does have the advantage with their RF-EF adapter (which should outperform any third-party, especially if shooting action), Sony was the original mirrorless platform that everyone adapted to, so there is a huge library of adapters out there for everything under the sun. Which is why it was also confusing bringing up the Speedbooster in the comparison section since the E-EF version was where Metabones first started. And, for transparency, I have an FX30. But I would have bought it regardlessly since I'm very deep in the system 😅 (Though I do miss Canon's color science...)
FX30 IBIS + lens stab is totally sufficient for hand held vlogging. What was shown in the video was IBIS only. For everything else you have Catalyst Browse for GoPro level of stab. Perfectly good trade off for not having IBIS wobble if you ask me (or any vlogger).
@@gigihanmandarin while all true, I’m just a vlogger and don’t have the time to stabilize every clip for just a vlog. And also not many good sony lenses with stabilization. Especially fast primes so still very much lacking in the stabilization department when other camera and especially phones are killing it.
@Mikee Rogers IBIS and OIS was never designed for video anyway. I think it's too much to expect tiny magnets to do the same job of a $300 gimbal. Wouldn't the Active stabilization at 10mm be enough?
Honestly if you have a somewhat up to date Sony camera I believe from the a7c onwards you should try catalyst browse it really is amazing at stabilizing
I've had most of the Sony mirrorless cameras and currently own a pair of FX30s, so my opinions are not without bias. That said, I've owned Canon and Fuji cameras as well, so I'm not a total Sony fanboi. The "cine" camera designation on the FX30 makes a differece for workflow; dual XLR inputs, the ability to jam timecode, DCI 4K, 1204K all-intra, S-Cinetone to match with my FX6, and possibly the most important thing for professional work, no overheating. As a final bonus, 16-bit RAW output via HDMI. The R7 has vibrant colors out of camera, but they're oversaturdated, and while it's not nearly as bad an overheater as earlier Canon or Sony cameras, it will still shut off when you ask too much of it. Ever since the A7Siii/A9's (and maybe A7Rv?) and their revised color science, I think Sony's colors have been totally on point. The 8-bit cameras were prone to banding and some weird green/yellow shifts, but those things are now fixed. For the money, I don't think there's a better camera on the market.
I just bought a canon r50 and i can say that this camera is really handy and easy to use. And those colors omg... the colors are absolutely stunning in canon. I belive that r7 is much better, you know, 10 bit log, ibis etc. I tried some fujifilm and sony cameras... they can shot beautifuly but those menus... idk they look like chaotic, i mean I don't like the softwere.
For the price I would buy old Lumix S5. In last Panasonic cameras outdoors colours are better than these two. Autofocus bad? Well, if you are in budget you will buy manual lenses anyway!
I've always been a canon shooter for years, but recently with my job I had to shoot on a Sony a lot and honestly, they are both fantastic camera Brands. both do have drawbacks but as far as picture quality, they are really on Par. it all depends on which brand you want to invest in more when you start. its always fun seeing the competition of canon Vs. Sony when they come out with new cameras that have basically the same specs. awesome detailed video Gene!
i mean both canon and sony (also Leica, Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus) use Sony Sensors as Sony is really the only one making sensors.... they're all using the same sensor so really you can't expect there to be a dfference in picture quality
@@LoFiAxolotl absolutely that's why I don't understand why people don't see the greatness and Sony devices Sony makes sensors for all the competitors so of course I'm going to go with the guy who makes the sensors for everyone lol. Plus having the best camera on the market the best video camera on the market and the best autofocus in the business even for the low level Sony a6400 it's all the focus system beats out many full frame competitors that are thousands of dollars more. But to each his own I think I'll stick with Sony. But if I was broke then it's Cannon to the rescue
@@HagaishiSama as this video shows, Sony isn't really that ahead of canon. They are both on par just minor difference, and the R7 isn't even using canons best highest log. Sony auto is a bit better but canons ibis was better so there are tradeoffs.
You sold me on a Sony FX30 and I got it with a Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 lens, I want the Sony 11mm f1.8 in the future though since for real estate I rarely use the 20mm Gyroflow in DaVinci Resolve is the Sony's stabilization app, I can do everything in DR!
ADHD question for Gene. Do you think you're "Body Doubling" in all your videos? Basically using having another person with you to motivate you and keep you on track. Recently heard about it and realised I often get more work done when my wife's just on the couch nearby. Do you think this is something you're consciously or unconsciously doing?
Hmmm. Interesting point. I bring on other people primarily to get different perspectives and opinions to make the videos more balanced. But also, what you said makes sense because I enjoy filming a lot more when I have others there, and it definitely keeps me on track.
But on the other hand, editing is something I rather do either by myself or in a quiet room without distractions. Haha. A pencil dropping can pull me out of an editing groove 😂
That look on Sony is so amazing Honestly guys Canon is good but this time the Sony fx30 wins look at the image it is Cinematic canon colors are little bit saturated
Basically, if you want to point-n-shoot video for social media without needing to color grade then buy the Canon because its a "hybrid camera". DO NOT buy the Sony FX because its a "Cinema Camera". The price range should be relevant with the camera line. I learned to hard way lol.
Man, USA to UK prices conversion is so lame. 1800 dollars right know wouldn't even be 1500 pounds. But £2100 (like 2500 dollars) for the Fx30; at that price I would consider any of the latest Fujis + lens. Good thing that I'm piss poor and wouldn't be able to afford them anyway.

Very interesting! I’ve used Sony NEX/ a cameras since 2012 and I like them but just hate the colors and overall darker look in mixed light/ natural lights. The FX30 looks awesome in reviews but this was the first time I really saw a comparison to a Canon camera and again I like the Canon color and ease of use. However here in Norway both the FX30 and R7 are ca 2200$ body-only but the Canon RP with kit lens costs only ca 1200$ and I wonder if crop sensor is worth it… compared to the RP with kit lens (latest firmware) and some small Samyang lenses that are smaller than some crop lenses. I think for the money I rather go fullframe in HD over crop and 4K. For social media that’s still fine.
R7 is way better…….on top of being a badass photo camera as well lmao. No comparison. IMO

Kari's knowledge of this stuff is improving in a great way!
Man, your reviews are just a cut above everybody else. School, but fun all at the same time.
Great comparison video... I agree FX30 has an excellent Auto Focus. It is a must have. That's why I pre-ordered it since I am a Sony user and invested on lenses. It's going to be a great upgrade for me coming from A6300. Very nice studio setup by the way ;-) .. Thanks for a very informative video...
pls post a comparison...FX30 vs A6300...I have the a6400. Thanks
Same as Erick, I have the 6400 and sigma trio please do a 6300 vs fx30 video so I can think about my next upgrade, been looking at the fx30
I knew giant drones could fit full size cameras but these newer smaller drones are powerful and fast. very impressed. I wouldn't fly a drone with a 2k + camera on it...
Definitely +1 for checking out some Fujifilm cameras! Would love to hear your thoughts on the new cameras with better video features like the X-H2S.
I would love to see your opinion on the fujifilm X-H2S it seems to be an incredible camera for video and I'd love to see a comparison with the FX30 and the R7.
You have to try the X-H2S. The only stacked sensor camera at a reasonable price. It really punches with the features it offers.
That’s what I bought although I have to say this camera is great for the price really really great!
crap ass autofocus compared to r7 or fx30. Lol
I came for the cameras, stayed for the mantis pod shout out. I love the ability to hang it!
Thank you for the comparison. I was a click away to ordering Fx30 and accessaries due to its form factor (and CyberMonday deal), in exchange for selling my R7. Still like the Fx30 but I don't see it's worth the switch.
I have the fx30 and I looove it, coming from a LUMIX s5 and g9 this is such an upgrade for me
You think FX30 is an upgrade from Lumix S5? May I know why?
@@looniaz sure, 1 colors i much prefer the colors and look i can get out of slog 3 and it way easier to grade than vlog, 2 large hdmi port i kept breaking hdmi cables on the mini s5 port 3 longer record times the s5 always stopped recording at 30 mins, 4 auto focus holy hell i didn’t understand what autofocus wad until i got the fx 30 so consistent and so sharp

Been waiting for an R7 review from you 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Before you start I was drooling over that cart!...Mute point for me I got the FX30 to work with my Fujinon MK (E Mount lens)
i got u on the POTATO song gimme a couple days lol
I am very very surprised. I watched a lot of reviews about fx30 and want to own it. Sony Fx30 is very good on the sheet but Canon R7 look more nice in every sceans by your comparison. Thank you for the great review.
I like the format. feels like you're giving a presentation at a board meeting
Potato on Fuji? Yes please! X-H2 and X-H2s 'ets goooooo
For Panasonic you have sigma 16-23-30-56mm f1.4 for L-mount
Lumix S5 is a full frame camera but you can choose to use it like an apsc camera. It’s cheaper than the fx30 + better dynamic range + more cinema features + AF in apsc mode is good
s5 have bad af@@peterra2532
We need more cameras in the is price bracket included.
Literally just got an S5 and will be selling my a74 and a7c.
Cannot fathom that the fx30 or r7 would beat the s5 or compete price wise
It's so much more focused for video work than these two.
Love your stuff but would love you to revisit this camera system.
Except the micro hdmi. That's utter pants x
Would love to hear your view on the black magic cameras... I'm not sure if you have spoken about them..
Just learn how to grade. It will take you max 3 minutes to do that shit
What do you think if the Fuji xh2? I think that's right under $2k USD. Curious to hear your thoughts on it and the XH2s.
I really hope they make an R7C making the R7 more video focused. I’d jump on that in a heartbeat!
I know its late but they're making an R8 full frame at the same price point as the R7.
Isn't that basically the C70?
@@danieldougan269 the C70 is almost $6k 😳
No..
Personally I am looking at the Canon R7, Canon R6 Mark 2 and Two Sony A74's as I do photography both Street photography and Portraits. I am currently using the Nikon D5500 which is a beast of a camera. For street photography and street portraits
Let's maybe talk more about the Lumix S5! 1,400€ for a FF cinematic beast with 5.9k ProResRaw!!!
Let’s get Fujifilm into Gene’s collection!
The XH-2 and XH-2S are amazing video camera’s and I hope to ever see you review them.
Its Amazing on a Gimbal!
wtf those drone shots are just EPIC
BROOOO!!!!! YOU'RE IN CARLSBAD! MY HOMETOWN! I USE TO LIVE RIGHT IN FRONT OF CALAVERA!! sorry for the caps hahah it just caught me off guard 😂
Truly one of your BEST tutorial videos Gene. WOW super great !!! Thank you 🙂
Moral of the story:
Spend $10k on your camera/lenses/rig or you will be disapointed.
Speed boosters won’t affect the depth of field but will give you more light. CVP done a great video on it. Also Meike have a great drop in rf adapter. Neat video!
Speedboosters does affect your fov - a 35 mm ff on an apsc would give a 52mm equiv fov , the 35 on a speedbooster would give you a 35mm equiv ( or close to it )
please look at the Panasonic S5, it's my main camera for cilent work along with the Panasonic EVA, I had a friend who switch from the c70 to 2 S5's
Word
But I would have bought it regardlessly since I'm very deep in the system 😅
(Though I do miss Canon's color science...)
As a Sony user, their stabilization for video is the only thing making me look at other systems.
For FF, there's only Panasonic, and then there's everyone else.
For smaller formats, well, Panasonic and Olympus.
Honestly if you have a somewhat up to date Sony camera I believe from the a7c onwards you should try catalyst browse it really is amazing at stabilizing
big fan of both..... these two brands are neck and neck now
I've had most of the Sony mirrorless cameras and currently own a pair of FX30s, so my opinions are not without bias.
The 3rd gen a6/a7 bodies partly fixed the colors , but the 4th gen is where its fully fixed
Its just a menu, you set it and forget it lmao
Z9, for sure.
How does it hold up against the A1?
Check out Kari talking about skin tones. Gene put a ring on it already!
I live super nearby that lake you filmed at and was starstruck. "THAT'S CALAVERA LAKE!!!"

I’ve been watching you for years now. And just learned what potato means. Get video
You should checkout the Fuji X-H2S, it's their more video centric camera.
For the price I would buy old Lumix S5. In last Panasonic cameras outdoors colours are better than these two. Autofocus bad? Well, if you are in budget you will buy manual lenses anyway!
Man Gene loves camera's so much that Keri is now a flat-out nerd! I need me a camera that would love me the same way!
Hey man just bought the brand new canon EOS R10...can you make a video on Canon EOS R10 pleaseee
@@LoFiAxolotl actually Canon makes its own Sensors. Sony does provide the sensors for the other brands though
@@HagaishiSama as this video shows, Sony isn't really that ahead of canon. They are both on par just minor difference, and the R7 isn't even using canons best highest log. Sony auto is a bit better but canons ibis was better so there are tradeoffs.
You sold me on a Sony FX30 and I got it with a Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 lens, I want the Sony 11mm f1.8 in the future though since for real estate I rarely use the 20mm
Gyroflow in DaVinci Resolve is the Sony's stabilization app, I can do everything in DR!
That diddy doesn't even need remixed. It was perfect as is lol.
I remember potato, have learned the hard way twice before. I see the orange balloon, greetings from Irvine!
WOW !!! Loving the NEW kitchen !!! Congrats !!! :-) I remember when you first started :-)
Thank you for yet another great comparison video. Kind regards from Belgium!
So informative and Fun to watch: great combo, love your channel.
That look on Sony is so amazing Honestly guys Canon is good but this time the Sony fx30 wins
look at the image it is Cinematic
canon colors are little bit saturated
I think the FX30 is good for a B/C/Gimbal Camera but without a viewfinder it would never replace my A-Camera.
I may be mistaken, but aren’t there way more lens options for Sony, especially third-party lenses? And metabones makes an e mount speedbooster also.
Basically, if you want to point-n-shoot video for social media without needing to color grade then buy the Canon because its a "hybrid camera". DO NOT buy the Sony FX because its a "Cinema Camera". The price range should be relevant with the camera line. I learned to hard way lol.
in the near future i see mrs potato doing the videos 😁😁 she has improved
Fujifilm xh2s, Fujifilm xt4 please review these
So happy I bought the R7 . Fx30 is a BEAST though !!
This is an awesome review for the lay person, well done. You even told us why your channel is called POTATO.
Eyyy 🙌🏼 this is Calaveras mountain, aka the dormant volcano in Carlsbad, San Diego 🔥🔥🔥
The best camera under 2k is the ZCAM E2M4. 4k 160p prores 422 internal, low light performance. At 51200 iso, you get pretty clean images. Just ettr.
Hi potato! Just trying to get my comment seen in a video. Much love from Guam! You and Kari should come visit! It’s a US territory like Puerto Rico. I’m working on a video to try and bring more awareness to the island.
POTATO checklist is on point 👍👍
Yes! Check out the Z9, it seems amazing!
It would be cool if you reviewed the Sony airpeak s1 drone! Too expensive for me but I'm curious as to what you think about it after flying so many other drones.
Kari is really getting into camera stuff
Which drone platform were you flying. Great skills!
The r7 didn't seem to have too much rolling shutter even in the drone shots, which I've seen as a big complaint of this camera
