It kind of boggles my mind that people are so into full frame now that they forget...99% of the movies ever shot before digital were shot on 4 perf 35, which is to say an APS-C sized piece of film. The depth of field we are used to seeing associated with Hollywood are mostly based around the APS-C size, not the FF 35mm still frame, which is closer to Vista Vision or 5 perf 65. There is such a thing as too much bokeh. Shooting wide open with a fast lens on FF and having the eyes in focus and the nose soft just looks terrible. Or missing focus entirely because the DOF was too shallow. There are more "super35" cinema lenses in the world than anything else...for a reason. Slap a PL adapter on the FX30 and you can shoot thousands of different amazing modern and vintage cinema lenses. Try that on a FF camera.
About the Bokeh... Yes it looks terrible when everything is so out of focus and you have a tiny think in focus. This is my biggest gripe with the series Euphoria that everybody seems to praise... But the whole series looks blurry as fuck. It nauseates me. I do not understand how it won prizes for best photogrpahy as I thought it looked horrendous. Even the play with colors in photography was nothing out of the ordinary. I don't get it.
I am not sure if I should get this camera or not. Cause I still want something for low light and good dynamic range. It seems that the old sony a7iii performs better, which is a shame.
@BlueWorldTV woke up and chose to comment facts. Personally, I've always preferred APS-C, but I do get why some people would like an FF. I think it's just a preference thing, but I hate how other reviewers discuss APS-C as if it's a huge handicap.
@@jillianoromano a good friend of mine has the exact same view as you. Based on facts. He loves the aps-c sensor and says it's exactly what makes good cameras budgetable. He would love a FF and sees as well as knows the benefits. But either way it also dependa on the camera. Not every FF is good and some aps-c are better. But in the end it just depends on the camera and it's price tag. But neither is actually better worse. They all have their pros and cons.
But for him the FX30 is a dream come true.
its also funny people forget how cheap apc c lenses are their are benefits and trade offs for all form factors of sensors I think the fx 30 is such a nice camera
I can already see ppl marrying this camera with the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. I hope this motivates Sigma to make an updated native e-mount version of that lens as its nearly a decade old.
Seriously though, the 18-35 needs to be updated
18-35 is the too good to be true lens, they will milk all their other products before releasing it again to native emount. its all that was stopping me from upgrading from canon.
please tell me the name of the adapter sigma 18-35 1.8 art ? the one that the video uses ?

This seems to be what the a6500 was to the A7Sii at the time…a lot of similar features including slog, a few compromises with sensor size and half the price. Love that this is an option to filmmakers!
Speaking of the a6500, which I what I have now... the fx30 doesn't seem to have much if any rolling shutter? Or has there been an advance in tech to fix it in post. I actually can't believe, especially at 24 fps, that it's not super juttery and wobbly....
@@eukaryote-prime It seems to have a faster sensor readout than the older sensors (I have the a6500 and a6600). Check the review by Gerald Undone where is some example of it. Hopefully we'll get actual numbers from CineD or DPreview when it's released.
@@eukaryote-prime it's much improved, the a6500 (along with the other 4k a6xxx cameras) have the worst rolling shutter of any interchangeable lens camera. 40ms readout at 4k24.
In comparison the FX30 is about 15ms.
i still love my sony a7sii
I just love the randomness in all the field testing... informative and great entertainment vallue 😁
This looks so good! The 4k resolution downscaled from 6k works really well and cropping in 2x or even 3x is definitely useable and looks pretty darn good!
I love how you integrate your sponsor ads into the video. Usually I skip these sponsor sequences but I enjoy watching yours
6:26 I love it when Gene explains things to her and she really doesn’t give a crap. Hahaha
I love those segments as well.
Love potato! Love how this is half review half vlog such a good combination 🔥
I find it odd reading the comments that they predominantly focus on the weaknesses of the FX30. A lot of the comments are about what it can’t do. I’ve worked in the audio industry for over 40 years now and if we have limitations or shortfalls in the studio we didn’t whine about it, we just found a workaround. It’s the same in the actual film industry. We don’t focus on what our equipment can’t do, we just get on with actually working and find a way to get the job done. I’ve nothing against healthy debate and chatting in forums (after all, here I am commenting), but all this negativity on what a certain piece of equipment can’t do, or what Sony MUST do to bring it up to YOUR standards is all backwards guys. Just go make films. If you have an issue with low light, move, or light the area better, learn your craft. If there is too much noise for you in the shadows, clean it up in post. If you can’t adjust the shutter angle, work around it, get the job done. I’d rather watch a bunch of shorts with great narratives with noise in the shadows than a bunch of tack sharp or overly bokeh’ed arty wank films directed by people stroking their experimental facial hair whining about how the film could have been better if they could only have adjusted the shutter angle or filmed in low light. Have a great day.
I can't wait to buy the FX30 later this year.
Looks amazing! And I love that you interviewed your friend about the camera while in the conga line haha! 😂❤
Huh, interesting APS-C camera and most of all, very affordable at $1,800.00 u.s. dollars. That's $2,000.00 less than the FX-3 so this will allow new film makers have access to a super camera without the need to spend so much. Great job Sony!!
When you add in the cost of "required CF express type A cards for 4K 60/120 and HD 240 it's not inexpensive save your money for a A7SIII
11:53 I don't think it'll replace pocket. Pocket is one of the best for it's price range after Komodo. Then Red V-RAPTOR & all time favorite The ARRI AMIRA.
Is a great camera but those base 12800 Iso vs 2500 make the fx3 the difference of this new one
Super35 is bigger than apsc
@@digibactechnologies a7Siii is still selling for $3,500 right now. Add Type A cards to it as well and you got a camera that will be $4,000 dollars easily. What you need to see is that new filmmakers have a starting point now. They can get 2x FX30 for the price of 1x a7Siii which will allow them to cover more angles. Besides that, they can use the extra money on lenses now. I wouldn't even recommend the a7Siii at all today rather the FX3 is the better route to go. Sony just gave new filmmakers even more reasons to stay with them with this FX30 because there is no one else that release one just like they did.
If you like this camera, the Fuji XH2 / XH2S are also really good options. Would love to see you cover some Fujifilm stuff! By far the biggest player on the APS-C market!
The autofocus is only in the Sony tho. That’s huge
@@mr.croissant7960 not totally true that. Articles and reviews of the Fujis leave its autofocus in good place
The Canon R7 is great too
@@juanQuedo Fuji's AF is still nowhere near Sonys.
@@Semper-Fidelity Haven't said that is on par with Sony, but that apparently it performs well. But either way, the selling points are others. AF isn't going to be the point where people would choose one over the other..if is that is because very specific niche needs or the buyer is just confused.
Nice video mr. Potato. I was stunned with what I could get out of this little camera!
Which one you'd suggest between BMPCC 6K pro & SONY. How about Z CAM E2-F6 Full-Frame 6K Cinema Camera?
@@akhanddbangladesh8274 regarding the FX30 vs BMPCC 6K, for me it comes down to these questions - 1) what do you want more - autofocus or built in ND filters? The BMPCC has built in ND, but lackluster autofocus (and no in-body stabilization). The FX30 has excellent autofocus and in-body stabilization, but no ND. Otherwise, both should meet 99% of a videographers needs. And 2) are you already invested in Canon or Sony lenses? For me, even though I'll need to start a new lens collection, the FX30 is the winner.
Finally a 10bit 4k 60fps apsc Sony! And it has ibis, xlr, and 16 bit raw out the FULL SIZED hdmi!! Bet you're going to start seeing a lot of FS7's on ebay!
I think new successor to Sony a6600 will have most of these features with a viewfinder and that would be awesome!
Yo where right! Sony a6700 is out and its exactly how you thought it would be😊
This is a game changer in pricing of Cine cameras. The Fx3 has a beautiful picture, if Fx30 is close, Sony will sell heaps of them!
somehow the jump from the A6600 to the FX30 makes more sense than A7Siii to the FX3.
Yeah there was already almost no reason to buy the a6600, now there REALLY isn't a reason!
@@Glenners Well, if you want a hybrid camera there is :P
@@rekinxxxl yeah but then you can save yourself $1000 and get an a6100 :P (that's what I had lol) just lose ibis so you need oss glass or a gimbal for video
@@Glenners I miss my a6100, was solid camera especially because I got it on sale for $548. I sold it to a friend and I now have the a7riv, but I still miss that little beast.
This is the FX version of the unannounced a6700 or whatever they’re gonna call it.
The crop comparison was so nicely done
Would you ever do a vlog/ video comparison between the A7C and the FX30? I think the comparison for 4k video shooters at around the same price would be one people would love to see :)
I'd be interested as well, although I'm wondering if they'll release a A7C2 sometime soon.
@@stefandesu I would like to know that too! I heard it was possibly planned for next year but I guess time will tell :)
Love the video man 🔥 Sony fx30 vs Fujifilm xh2s video comparison would be spicy 😩
How good was the autofocus using the sigma 18-35 with adaptor on the FX30?
Great way of showing this new camera! I had a lot of fun shooting with it and I think it's going to be a really popular new camera!
man if they made the A7s30 it would be the best option because then you would have the view finder for photos, but either way id definitely buy the fx30 because I have a Nikon for photo and ive been looking for a budget cinema camera

Agree with Frank. I shoot a lot of video but i started this entire endeavor with photography. I need a camera to take photos, thats why i chose the r5 over the a7s3.
For photos A7IV is a hybrid camera. R5 isn't reliable in video, we can't compare it to the A7S3.
@@rafalgelzok What isn't reliable about the R5? I've used multiple R5s on numerous commercial projects without a single issue.
@@rafalgelzok it’s reliable. I’ve shot over 2 hours at a time without any issue. I’ve shot all day with a ninja on it. To say it’s not reliable now is foolish.
@@TylerEdwards it's all about how you shoot but R5 has a problem with overheating and this wasn't single video about that, you can check on yt. I don't want to speak about that where you live (temperatures), if you shoot 4k30, 4k120 or 8k30 because I don't care about that. For some people R5 will be good but this isn't camera for all because of this problematic heat.
@@rafalgelzok they updated the firmware and fixed that. I haven’t gotten it to overheat once in 100°+(f) in the hot desert Sun in 4k120, 8K raw or 4KHQ.
Dude I am planning to buy a mirrorless camera for first time and I had made my mind for Fx3 but after your video now I am confused which one I should go for my work is to shoot songs , bts for feature films and run and gun work ..
Does 1080p 120fps have crop too? If yes, then is it same as 4k 120fps?
This is a pretty tempting camera for damn sure! But I'm feeling like you're still better off getting the gh6. It's probably better at everything lol. Or the Panasonic s5 for that matter.
Agreed. Literally the only thing this Sony has on the GH6 is autofocus.
@@dericsanchez4081 right but the gh6 actually has good autofocus. Not sony level, but still plenty good. I got to play with it at b&h and it's definitely and finally competent lol
@@akyerit yeah I’ve heard a few people mention that. Not sure why RUclips just trashes on it. It’s like they get paid by Sony or something haha
If you're looking at the GH6 better off getting the Xh2s. It's better at almost everything over the GH6.
@@BoomingVisuals ya thats a significant jump in price though. Like an entire grand lol. Way out of my price range. 1500ish is my comfort zone, and thats right around the fx30/s5 range for me. Maybe even the sigma fp. I haven't done enough research to know enough about rhe xh2s but I'd be amazed if it did everything better than the gh6. That thing seems like it does EVERYTHING lol. But im looking into it as I type and I'll def be having more of a look to see. What's even crazier is I've actually been more interested in the original bmpcc purely for the image, and I'm starting to consider picking that sucker up strictly for filmmaking
I rather wait and see if they release a version with a view finder, like maybe an A7S30. The replacement for the A6600 is probably what I would get. It’s the same reason I bought an A7S3 instead of the FX3. I rather have a viewfinder.
I still have my MetaBones Ultra speed booster for my FS5II 😊. Gonna be ordering this and slapping it on. Good C Cam for my A Cam A7SIII and B Cam A7IV
Does this have product showcase mode like the ZVE10?
15:53 made me chuckle. that's just like my wife. she is freaked out by spiders.
love this comparison with layers
How would this perform in live broadcast production?
I've heard that some cinema cameras have a delay on the HDMI output, which wouldn't work well for live use.
I was thinking that this would be a great entry-point to the FX6.
When FX6 funds would be available, then it seems like this would make a great b camera.
Thanks for any assistance...
JJ
I CANT WAIT TO BUY THIS CAMERA 🤩👍🏽💯📸 Thank you Sony!!!
How does the quality of auto focus compare to other models? Seem like a good wedding videographer cam if the autofocus works well.
It's Sony's latest tech. What better model is out there for AF?
I almost spat out my coffee watching Gene and Dylan explain about Licked 🤣🤣🤣🤣👏
This is the first sony I've seen in a while I'm actually interested in. Very cool. Seriously no shutter angle setting though?
What we really need to know is, how in the U.S it is priced at $1800 (body only) and in the UK £2200 (body only) - that converts to $2450 .... Sony what the hell!
Looking into the FX30 for a B-cam on corporate and low end doc. The compact form factor and autofocus appeal to me. A little concerned about low light capability, but I’d be getting fast glass for it.
Would be cool to see how this camera stacks up against the new Fuji X-H2s
Xh2s is going to destroy the fx30
@@JericTamayo $700 more expensive with worse stabilization and worse autofocus. I wouldn't call that "destroying".
If you're more into sports photography and/or fully manual operation for video production, it's great... However, they're just different cameras.
Holy shit that chip segment was absolutely amazing
This looks interesting for sure!
i wonder how it'll do with a speedbooster. hoping you'd do a sample gene 🙏🏻😁
I love this camera! Looks like the perfect little RUclips camera for me so I can leave my A7SIII rigged up for professional work, and have a little knockaround camera that’s similar in quality!
bruh... I was thinking of using the FX30 for professional work. Not fucking youtube. For youtube I use my old Nokia with no camera.
Who the fuck spends so much moeny for fucking youtube?
nah man... I am lost now. Don't know what to get. I would love the sony a7siii but it is so out of my range. plus lenses? fuck. I am ruined.
Why was there a green and purple band along the top edge of the video (I've seen it other videos from you too)? What about the green fringing around the edge of your ear? Artefact introduced by the camera or post-processing?
Always the best reviews!
Except built in variable ND, nor does it have SDI ports, I rather seen a FX60 a FX6 with an ASPC sensor at half the price of an FX6.
Frank was asking the right questions. thank you
That spiders' spidy sense definitely kicked in at the end lol
It sounds like Sony are doing another Sony A7iii which was a low margin camera to gain market share. Great job!

Same price as the blackmagic 6k. Could be an interesting comparison. I would go with the 6k
If you need to do heavy grading, the black magic is what you want. Not to mention built in nd filters and other cinema tools.

The Chip challenge but reminds me of when Steve-O did this with Ryan Reynolds. F’ING hilarious
How is the rolling shutter compared to A7S3 or FX3?
This camera is very interesting. I was considering buying an FX3 or FX6 in the future but was leaning harder towards a Komodo because I prefer S35 sensors over "full-frame", and was annoyed Sony hadn't developed an S35 "cinema" camera/camcorder at the mid-tier price point in a while. Because I often am capped with additional lighting, the Sony's lower-light abilities are attractive when compared to the Komodo or BMPCCs. Sony needs to add shutter angle and 1/48th ASAP though. WTF were they thinking.
@Potato Jet, may I know your DJI mic settings? It sounds so clear.
What rec709 LUT are you using? I'm getting hugely different colour results from my camera. Try Resolve's Color Space Transform.
Judging from the a6000 series, can I hope for another update within a year?? :D
We need G lenses too for APS-C
You talked a lot about stabilization. Does this one have gyro data recording, like the fx3 and fx6, for stabilization in post?
One thing I haven't seen mentioned (and I'm not sure if this is possible with FX-3 either), but does this work with Catalyst Browse for stabilization?
Yes it does
It does with the gyro data.
pls review on Fujifilm X-H2 and X-H2s! great video as always!
I heard you were trying out Davinci Resolve - how are you liking it??
Resolve is king, I’m sure he agrees
An interesting camera for sure. I still don't quite know how it compares to the Blackmagic 6k - aside from autofocus, of course, which for event work is godsent... but at that point, is a cinema camera really what you'd want to buy? Investing slightly more into the A7IV might be a better option at that point so you'll have the full-frame sensor and better low light.
It's nice that Sony is making an affordable filmmaking camera. We'll have to see how this fares with the indie market.
I get your point, but $1000 plus full frame lenses can hardly be considered a slight investment. It might be north of $2500. With the same logic, why a videographer should by A7IV if he can invest slighly to get the A7Siii.
@@oiko2k4 That is a really good point. Sometimes it’s easy to forget about those early savings-draining lens investments :)
BM is a couple hundred more and there are a ton of good/very good emount lenses that can be had for less than $700. This is irritating that Sony brought this out now because I'm purchasing an A7Siii tomorrow lol
@@oiko2k4 this totally depends on what you're shooting and your preferences. I'm amateur/dabbling in client work and Rokinon/sigma primes are all I use. Plenty of great options under $1,000.
Isn't the Fx30 only 10 bit, whereas the Blackmagic is 12 bit?
Great job on the video! Thanks for making it.
YOU DUDE ARE WILD AF WITH THOSE CHIPS + AD LOL
Hi, in slow motion shots of 4k 120 at 9:01 and 1080p240 at 9:10 timemark what iso were you using? Was it flexible iso or cine EI?
11:40 had me dying lmao
Man this really is a contender to the pocket now, but with pro features. Wish it could do 12 bit internal and it’d actually be able to totally surpass it but man for $1800 I can live with it
smaller, dimmer screen-crazy menu-no false color-no internal nds-no shutter angle-10 bit----definitely doesn't surpass blackmagic!
@@bmefilms6879 Yes the menu sucks, yes no shutter angle sucks, the white balance being less tunable sucks. Brighter screen on the Pocket 6K Pro. But when I’m solo shooting with no AC and no help, the IBIS, great Autofocus, much stronger lens-to-Mount tolerance, much stronger, more solid body, better internal scratch mics and more dependable software makes it barely peak out over for me. The Ninja V for 12 bit ProRes Raw is a headache but at least there’s an avenue. I bought the original Pocket in 2014 and I’ve been a huge fan of it ever since, but it has its limitations. It’s just tough cause the Pocket 6K pro has tons of great features, and the FX30 has a ton of great features and most of those features are on 2 separate lists. So ideally I’d have both. I just really hate EF mounts. E Mount is so much stronger, if you have a focus motor against a lens, on EF there is play and shift, E Mount is as rock solid as PL and it’s hard to believe. I care about this stuff cause I’m normally a 1st AC for a living, I just shoot my own stuff sometimes. So ideally I have both lol
every Sony camera that can do video NEEDS to have shutter angle. It's just a freakin' automatic software setting. Certainly this is doable relatively easily by firmware.
Gotta save as many features as possible for the real cinema cameras. :P
@Patato_Jet, where'd you that sunglass? Think you can leave a link to that too?
Awesome & thanks :) Sir, Can internally record in 4k and simultaneously live stream in 1080p with Sony FX30 ? :)
just bought an FX30 on sale for $1598 from Adorama/Amazon and at that price this camera is a no-brainer.
Love to see the LOW LIGHT resolution
That is exactly what I need, spicy tortilla chips. Wait, I'm on keto.
One of Fuji cameras have built in ND Filters. The x100f and apparently the x100v
The camera...Great! But, what was more painful, the getting in of those chips or the getting out?
Built in ND is easy for manufactures. All they need to do is add that electrically controlled glass that can change its opacity.
