@@AkhilsaiNo1 never once did he say they were the best. He talked about why they did what they did, why things are more expensive, and why they even changed lens mounts. A commercial would have just focused on why they are better than brand B, not the actual information on how exactly lenses work and what compromises were made in spite of having the funds to do it right.

That's right. So, I can tell my camera where to auto focus by touching liquid crystal panel. then my camera understand my intent, do forccs it and start tracing the object automatically.

it doesn't unless you tell it where. canon's auto focus is amazing if you tell it what you'd like it to focus on.
@@gdrriley420 it's good at faces, but I've found that like if you're trying to get a close up of like someone doing something with their hands and they're moving a lot, it can lose track.
For stills, I always use center AF. Point at what you want to focus on, press and hold shutter halfway, then move camera to the desired frame. Doesn't work for video recording though.
No not awesome. We have manual and AF on glass for a reason.

Roof-prism binoculars also suffer from this problem, that's why in the military they tend to use the Porro design (simpler, cheaper, and better optically, on top of that).

I have never before seen such a coherent and wonderful exchange from an expert that talked about all the tradeoffs of lens designs. I had pieced a lot of this together over 30 years as a still photo hobbyist and knew a great deal of the outcomes from practical experience - but to hear it discussed so matter of factly and confirming some things I knew and correcting some things I was slightly wrong about was wonderful. Loved this - and I'm not a cinema photography guy. Thanks!
Mr. Adams was my teacher at ARRI for my certification training class. He was extremely informative and insanely cool. Shoutout to Mr. Adams ✊🏿
I love Art being so proficient yet humble. He's not ridiculing less expensive lenses, he just explains they need to make way more compromises. Also, ARRI has been around for more than 100 years. Kinda feels like a Mercedes-Benz of cine gear.
Except Mercedes quality is getting worst over time, while ARRI is improving😆.

@@shapes9495 nah he got it right, Benz was/is the pioneer of new tech. Most of what is in the new toyotas came from Benz. Toyota is like making a kit lens perfectly for decades and you can still drop it after 60 years but it isn't top of the line.

Just watched this for the 2nd time. And I have to say big props for Gene for the overall tone of this interview. ie asking the questions and just letting the guy from Arri talk and letting him explain everything in such a insightful way. So many interviewers get the basics wrong by constantly interrupting their guests and not letting them just talk especially when they have such amazing knowledge like this Arri guy does. 👏

It only took me 42 years and a video I randomly stumbled upon where someone of a company I never heard of talks about chromatic abberation and suddenly that dark side of the moon cover is making total sense.

That focus breathing stuff - where primes are really mini-zooms also - so cool, and really makes a lot of sense! Great stuff, man, as always!

Fun fact: The Nikon Z 24-70/f4 S mirrorless kit lens virtually has no focus breathing because it has a little zoom motor to automatically cancel it out, as do many of the new Z lenses.
@@infrasmog A lot of the cheaper and smaller lenses these days have electronic helpers. For example a Sony PXW-Z90 has a super-small lens for a relatively large 1" sensor, but it has a 12x optical zoom, 4K resolution, parfocality and no focus breathing. It's impossible to make a "real lens" like that in that small size and light weight. There is all kinds of electronic trickery going on in the camcorder to correct the lens errors, but also in the lens. For example it is not actually parfocal, but the focus is electronically corrected on the fly when you zoom.
It's one of the reasons why in the past, a handheld camcorder was double the size and weight, only had a 10x optical zoom and a tiny 1/3" sensor. They just didn't have the computing power for the electronic trickery.
Eliminating focus breathing is one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen
after all the explanations I think that lens is a bargain at $25,000.

And the gym basement, we use a 35 because I wanted the feeling of the tunnel a bit more."

I have to say that one can tell that Art is passionate about what he does, because it's evident in his patient explanations, and his willingness to share his "decades" of knowledge. He's one of the many signs of why Arri is successful. I'm 62 and retired now, but just from what I've seen here it makes me want to recommend to young people who have passion for sciences, to go into cinematography. I'll be watching this more than once.

It's such a blessing to hear an actual master talking about his craft. This goes for all areas, here on RUclips there are many experts, but very little masters. Because of their deep understanding they can explain things in such a different, simple way. I love it!

"How fast you Work, Determines how fast everyone Works"! What a powerful statement in regards to a lens swap! Outstanding Statement, I can begin to tell you how many times, I've been on both sides of the spectrum, either waiting for a frame up, or having to produce the frame up. Yes, at those moments, I would rather donate a kidney to make it go faster. There is nothing like that type of pressure. This alone sets Arri from many others, and only has. I have one camera with a PL Mount, and my life long dream is to mount a authentic ARRI Prime on it someday that I own!
