This is probably one of the most valuable videos on RUclips right now for filmmakers of all levels. Filming our own stuff is how we find our shooting style, and how we perfect our craft, but when getting booked for a real shoot it's golden to be able to say I have an idea of how to function this camera. I’m a 50 years old movies lover from Italy and last week I finally took home an old ARRI ALEXA CLASSIC. It’s a 5200 hours ex-rental camera, totally serviced by ARRI at Monaco last year, and with many accessories. It records only 2K, is cumbersome, is heavy and colored like a war tank. But I just don’t care… After owning BLACKMAGIC, CANON and SONY, this was my dream. And is finally a reality. The next step is to find an old external ARRIRAW recorder like CODEX or CONVERGENT DESIGN. Hi Mr. Potatojet. Just an addition to what you said about the LF's on board power options: you cannot power an LF with traditional Gold Mount battery. You would need Bebob's special high power battery back and even then you can only use Bebob's Cine battery series (e.g. A290), that has 2 extra pins for some clever power magic. P.s. The Hawk Woods v-lock battery that's on this LF isn't standard either. Its output is 26V instead of the standard 14V and one of the connector pins is blocked on the bottom so you cannot confuse it with regular v-mount chargers. This 100Wh battery is originally intented for the 65, there's a series of batteries especially for the LF.
I'm just here just because man.lol I have no experience with cinema cameras but it's so much fun to watch and listen as you give us the tour. I can tell you really love this stuff.

FYI 4 pin XLR is power and 3 pin XLR is for audio. Generally the 4 XLR is used to power the camera until your ready to roll or it would loose battery power while setting up lighting or doing rehearsal. Good video bro.
This is is a great video. It allows the average guy to understand what truely understand what a real cinema camera is all about. It should inspire all filmkers. Most of the featues are about turning films out efficiently. If you are cranking out films everyday, they make sense. I know someone who has used an Arri Alexa but his four feature films used something more ordinary.
The camera is pretty cool, but that follow focus is on another level. I got more excited than I should have for that lol. It just kept getting better with each feature you mentioned.
You know, I can only feel kinda anxious, when realizing, that with my health issues, and yearly wage of my family of $3000 (from 3 to 5, but usually it's 3), not only I can't afford even mid-range mirrorless, but also very basic stuff for filmaking, and I don't have any cinema clubs nor even acceptably good movie schools or something even remotely similar in my region, which is generally very poorly developed in terms of creative culture. I bought a6400, and now wanna sell it and buy X-T3, but I guess I'm not gonna be able switch to X-T3 soon. I'm 50\50 photo video shooter (but more video), and after more than a year of savings I initially bought Sony a6400, which is a great camera, but due to some tech issues (poor focus included, which is truly odd considering not that many people talked about it) and really annoying sensor dust attraction, it wasn't suitable for me. I was on hurry with my purchase, because at the time I needed to film an interview with elderly person, which had a lot of health issues, and could probably, you know, die. And due to possibility of that interview be the final moments of the life of that person, I wanted to film that in rather good quality etc. When a6400 launched it was ridiculously overpriced in my region, about $200 more compare to officially announced prices. The initial price was roughly 1/3 of yearly wage of our family, so it was pretty substantial purchase for me. Weeks after I filmed that interview Sony announces a huge discount on a6400, which was about $158. Some stores claimed that it's gonna be until November 3rd, but discount is still there. So, just like that, even if I try to sell my a6400, I lose a pretty noticeable amount of money, and I'll still need a lot in order to buy X-T3 (kinda afraid to buy used, due to scams and frauds, which is sadly pretty common in my region). And now, even if I'll be able to get X-T3 what can I actually do? My laptop barely can handle 1080 footage, and on top of new pc I'll still need other equipment, such as gimbal, recorder (at least zoom h1n is very affordable). And there's no guarantee that all my efforts will pay off. So there's that. Sorry for whining, but I feel pretty much crushed and depressed because all of that, and just wanna share my story.
What would happen if an inexperienced crew shooting a short film swapped equipment with a group of Hollywood filmmakers? The Hollywood crew would 100% make a better film with the lesser equipment. Fact of the matter is, equipment is just a tool to create art. Better tools can create better art, but it is ultimately up to the artist. An a6400 is an incredible camera! And you should be proud of your achievement. Imagine if the greats from the 1920's, 30's and 40's had access to such technology. They already created amazing films, and their cameras were shit compared to today. My point is, you can become an amazing cinematographer and story teller without the use of a $100,000 camera, or even a $2000 camera. A camera is a good tool, but your brain is an even better one. I wish the best of luck to you my friend. I hope you keep your head high and achieve all you've ever wanted.
I work on a bunch of TV shows & features, I'm not in the camera department but in the lighting department. But, I'm always around the cameras checking them out and seeing how cool it's rigged out. I actually got to see the Mini LF first hand a few days ago. A couple Arri reps came by with the camera and most of the Signature Primes to do a presentation (probably the same one they gave you) and a demo. My rental house should be getting the camera in very soon, and I can't wait to take this thing out into the field. Oh, and I got a free hat out of it. Those are always nice.
The image comes out "log" basically raw. You can use LUTs and default color profiles like Rec709 but for the most part every production will finish with a colorist. Important part of the process.

Stephane Gregory Dan look at it this way. I rented a canon C300 mkii for 2 days, it was £2k deposit and £400 for rental. My guess is this setup is easily £5k a day.
@@skatepark02 yeah well... 5K a day then. Who cares. The point has been made, that renting this shit out is gonna cost a lot of Ks. But even Buying one wouldn't really be affordable. 7:48 A camera simulator is a really thoughtfull thing to put on your website. Learning where to find each setting can be done way more intuitive that way, especially when preparing for a shoot.
*In my 40s and KNOW I’m going to sound like an old man* BUT.... Why are you young filmmakers trying to BUY these $50,000-$100,000+ cameras to shoot indie projects/“potential” Netflix projects that may or may not see the light of day? Most are financing these things and wind up selling them in the end. Not to sound discouraging (I encourage creativity), but the bright eyed dreaming of most of you is unbalanced. We RENTED equipment - as do most major studio houses (even if its renting within, it’s still a rental budget). So why is there encouragement for some random person to buy these six figure setups, which require multiple people who know what there doing? As someone who works with the Union, I implore you to RENT - or use a Blackmagic, GH5, or other sub $5,000 camera if you MUST have a body/lens in your permanent custody. Not a studio appropriate $100,000 rig. Unless you come from a wealthy family that is.
@@David-ud9ju well I would if I could fund it, but that's because having nice gear like this is just nice compared to uabing a DSLR with a million different menus and compromises
Frank Davis I’m a GH5S user and I work as a professional. It’s a great camera and can accurately be matched to an Alexa. I’ve seen some amazing work from the black magic pocket and FS5 as well.
i can only make uneducated guesses, but i would imagine that if you can find the funding for a project you might appropriate some of those funds to buying equipment for further projects, if any. essentially, have the investors pay for it. if the movie makes money, no one is going to question the purchase. if it doesn't, at least you have the equipment and can use that as an enticement when making your next pitch to investors, 'i can save you xxx dollars because i'm serious enough about my craft to own the equipment.' maybe convenience, too, i don't know: i live in dayton, OH, it's not as if i can pop down to the local movie equipment shop and walk out with what i want, lol.
I love that I'm totally clueless when it comes to the actual specs and operation of it all but I'm sitting her like... "Wow, what a smart move from Arri to include that..."
Vancouver Film School has 6 Mini LFs. I'm near the end of the film production program and we get to use them for the last 6 months of the program. It's so awesome to use these cameras every week. It'll be sad to leave them behind.
Was a VTR operator for 13 years in New York City. Watching your videos makes me want to get back into the business, except now I'm in Oklahoma. Not much of a film business here. 🤔
Really enjoyed the quick breakdown of Hollywood's most popular camera. I'm so unfamiliar with big movie equipment, and so few RUclipsrs have access and knowledge about it. 👍👍
Probably worth noting that IMAX cameras are so loud that you generally can't record sound at the same time. Most of the benefits of high end digital camera are to improve workflow, but you could make the argument that IMAX cameras work against that, though in exchange for great image quality.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 I’ve head the adage. But I wasn’t asking because I could afford it, I was asking because it’s a relevant detail to include in the video and many people are probably curious. Of course I can google search it, but since I’m already watching the video it would be more convenient to just say it goes for around x price, or I bought it for x price.

i hope one day potato jet will uses Arri Alexa cameras in his giveaways.
"Tastes like a parking meter" 🤣 I don't wanna know how you know that
dude your personality is dope. u make your vids so easy to binge. thank you! hope you hit a million subs soon.
"Tastes like a parking meter"
my boy gene tasted a parking meter.
7:48 A camera simulator is a really thoughtfull thing to put on your website.
Learning where to find each setting can be done way more intuitive that way, especially when preparing for a shoot.
Arri told them they could do what ever they want to, Gene licks the camera 😂
It’s always so exciting to find out that genes released a new vid
Unless you come from a wealthy family that is.
it happens because influencers link achievements like an oscar to a certain type of gear
I don't think there are really people who want to buy this camera unless they're proper Hollywood or they're millionaires.
I cant rent one of these because the deposit is more than my net worth.
Vancouver Film School has 6 Mini LFs. I'm near the end of the film production program and we get to use them for the last 6 months of the program. It's so awesome to use these cameras every week. It'll be sad to leave them behind.
Wait, I watched this whole video and there’s no Arri giveaway?
YES! We want a video from you why cinema lenses are sooo good! :-)
Yes so sick thank you gene💯 #filmmaking
Was a VTR operator for 13 years in New York City. Watching your videos makes me want to get back into the business, except now I'm in Oklahoma. Not much of a film business here. 🤔
And Im sitting here being happy with my D3400 :D
Joker was also filmed on a Alexas. That's likely to win best cinematography this year (and it damn should too).
For this kind of money you can even buy a 35mm camera with film stock
Yes you can.
WOW---Moonshot video--you just sent your channel from super fun/informative to absolutely essential.....your posts get better every time...thanks!!
Riddle me this, what tastes like a parking meter and smells like Steve?
An ARRI Alexa LF that ARRI hooked up to Gene?
Really enjoyed the quick breakdown of Hollywood's most popular camera. I'm so unfamiliar with big movie equipment, and so few RUclipsrs have access and knowledge about it. 👍👍
John Dough cool story bro
"You guys ask strange questions"
Yeah, but dude, who decides which questions make it into the video?
🙃
I actually shed a tear when I saw that footage from the arri
My short was shot on an Arri Alexa Mini. When I saw the footage out of the camera, seriously, I almost cried it was so beautiful.
Did I win anything? Im second here. LOL
You won a tasty parking meter.
LOVE that Jet! THE Potato JET!!
Thanks for making me dream about cameras that I can’t afford..Jet!
😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
Rent. Everyone does. Even studios.
Did anyone else think he had an IMAX camera for a second?
@Cemil next to impossible as those cameras are rental only
Probably worth noting that IMAX cameras are so loud that you generally can't record sound at the same time. Most of the benefits of high end digital camera are to improve workflow, but you could make the argument that IMAX cameras work against that, though in exchange for great image quality.
@@thatcherfreeman 20K a week to rent not including the film which at 15 perf only gives you like 2:30 min per 1000 feet.
There's a Danish company that made 65mm film cameras, shame they don't make them anymore.
Logmar is making a new five perf camera but that’s not IMAX.
Best video youve made in a while. Love that high end stuff
He's giving me anxiety how he just moves through those hella expensive cameras so fast.
Stranger things vibes with the synth music drying the cinematic sequences! 👌
I just found my camera charger after months, and after 2 hours of recording piano, the footage corrupts :(
my anxiety levels were crazy watching Potato handle that lens one handed!!!
But can it run Crysis??
WHOOPS! Wrong place. I’m lost. Need directions. Help. Please!
I’m here to help
Super interesting. Your enthusiasm sells it!

5:10 JAA! 😍 Thanks for the ARRI Tour so far !
*doesn’t tell price of the camera* :/
*you clearly don't know google exist*
If you have to ask, you can't afford it. Base LF runs $85 to $125,000.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 Did I say I could afford it or was in the market looking to buy one? From what I can tell, my original comment is unedited.
@@mouthbreather280 the old adage: if you have ask the price, you can't afford it.
You've never heard that? It's a humorous statement.
This is so awesome, thanks for showing it to us!
